"These standards were developed by the CIM for use with the value or worth of a Mineral Property as opposed to “evaluation” where the key objective is an economic assessment or determination of the economic merit of a propertyP1 .0 BACKGROUNDPl.1 There are at present no comprehensive standards for valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The Mining Standards Task Force (MSTF) of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission in its Final Report (January 1999) specifically recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on approaches to valuation of Mineral Properties.Pl.2 On May 5, 1999 at the Calgary Annual General Meeting, CIM Council approved the formation of a Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMV al) to be co-chaired by Keith Spence (Chairman of the CIM Mineral Economics Society) and Dr. William Roscoe (Roscoe Postle Associates Inc.).Pl.3 The mandate of CIMVal is to recommend Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general and to be adopted by Canadian securities regulators and Canadian stock exchanges.Pl.4 The members of CIMVal represent of a mix of professional disciplines and experience in the field of Mineral Property valuation:Keith N. "In high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often observed in foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites. Given that comprehensive investigations of deepseated rock slides are extraordinary costly and therefore are rare, most studies are related to investigations in the surroundings of infrastructures and human settlements. In the framework of this study there is an excellent opportunity to gain new insights in the fundamental processes and mechanisms of slowly moving deep-seated rock slides from a case study in the surrounding of a large dam reservoir in Austria. New fundamentals for comprehensive slope stability analyses and hazard assessments and sound prognoses focussing on the long-term stability and deformation behaviour of slopes under changing boundary conditions (e.g. impounding of a reservoir) and/or concepts for mitigation measures can be obtained. Within this contribution, geological field surveys, deformation monitoring, geophysical and drilling data were analysed and presented. Based on the compiled and analysed data, some key-properties of the rock slide will be presented, whereby special attention will be given on the geometry and internal structure, the slope kinematics, as well as hydrogeological and geomechanical aspects.INTRODUCTIONIn high mountainous regions, deep-seated rock slides are often encountered in highly foliated metamorphic rocks such as paragneisses, micaschists and phyllites (Agliardi et al. 2012). Critical situations may occur when deep-seated rock slides fail in a rapid manner characterised by very high sliding velocities, and/or when they develop into long run-out rock avalanches. However, many rock slides in foliated crystalline rock masses either do not move at high velocities nor do they accelerate seriously and form extremely rapid slides. Displacement rates in the range of a few millimetres or centimetres per year are common for this type of rock slide (Bonzanigo et al. 2007, Tentschert 1998, Watson et al. 2007). Nevertheless, some case studies show an activity behaviour characterised by acceleration phases reaching velocities of even metres per day. However a slope collapse is not expected and these slopes decelerate to much lower base activities. The trigger for these phases can be manifold and include heavy rainfall and snow melt, initial reservoir impounding and water level fluctuations, changes in the slope’s equilibrium state due to antecedent slow deformation processes, ongoing erosion processes along the toe of the slope, and others (Zangerl et al. 2010)."

The Ni-rich Epidote Zone of the Fraser Mine at Sudbury is characterized by alteration assemblages rich in epidote, actinolite and magnetite which are roughly concentrically zoned and up to hundreds of meters in length. These zones form discrete areas within the igneous Footwall Breccia below the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The assemblages grade from epidotized Footwall Breccia matrix,through actinolite-bearing rocks with few vestiges of original Footwall Breccia textures, into the most intensely altered rock, a magnetite-rich facies. Pentlandite, pyrrhotite and pyrite are the dominant sulfdeminerals; chalcopyrite is minor. The strongest geochemical differences compared to original Footwall Breccia occur where epidote and actinolite dominate the alteration assemblage (EPDZact facies). The most intense alteration facies are typifed by low Cu/(Cu+Ni) values of <0.1. Strong positive correlations exist between Ni and Co, Cu and Au, and among Ir, Os, Ru and Rh. Chondrite-normalized Ni - PGE -Au - Cu plots display an overall increase in all elements from the least to the most intensely altered facies except for Au and Cu. As the proportion of actinolite increases in the EPDZact facies, the chondrite-normalized profles fatten considerably due to low Au and Cu contents. Abundances of Ni, Ir, Ru and Rhalmost ubiquitously increase with degree of alteration. In contrast, Cu, Zn, Ag and Au contents are low in almost all facies. It is suggested that saline hydrothermal fluids moved through the Epidote Zone formation and became more oxidized as they reacted with the Footwall Breccia and with footwall units, including ultramafic rocks. As this trend continued, magnetite-rich zones eventually developed. The occurrence of calcite locally in these magnetite-rich zones suggests that the pH of the fluid increased, causing Cu solubility to drop as activity in the hydrothermal system waned. Sudden changes in fluid composition such as this may have been due to an influx of fluid from bounding ultramafic rocks. Hydrothermal activity was focused along the margins of footwall ultramafic units. Individual hydrother-mal cells may have formed in the Footwall Breccia along pre-existing structures or sulfde concentrations. Metals may have been scavenged from sulfide-bearing Footwall Breccia and possibly Sublayer rocks. Nickel and some PGE were deposited in the Epidote Zone, whereas Cu, Au and Ag continued out-ward into the footwall where they were deposited as Cu-rich footwall veins. "Current practice in advanced materials processing has involved the dispersion of a second-phase, commonly SiC, glass, or other non-metallic fibres/whiskers/particulates to enhance physical characteristics of the matrix. These matrices may be either ceramic or metallic but in either case it is important that the physical and chemical properties of each phase be compatible. The dispersed, finely divided second phase is often both expensive and foreign-produced and may exhibit chemical instability at elevated temperatures. Thus, it would appear that certain naturally-occurring industrial mineral fibres/whiskers/particulates might offer an attractive and low-cost alternative. Suitable candidates, such as wollastonite and sillimanite, are available in Canada and may be milled to produce particles whose shape is appropriate for this application. It is suggested that wollastonite, in particular, may be a useful modifying agent in metal matrix composites utilizing AI, Al-Si, Zn-Al or other light metals and alloys. In addition, the possible use of these minerals in ceramic matrix materials is also addressed, with reference to a preliminary thermodynamic analysis of the systems involved.IntroductionBackgroundA composite material may be thought of as consisting of a matrix component, the properties of which are improved by the addition of a second component or dispersed phase which forms a distinct three-dimensional interface with the matrix. This matrix is commonly either metallic or ceramic, which leads to the two most popular types of composites: metal-matrix composites (MMC); and ceramic-matrix composites (CMC).Such materials are by no means new. Early composites include fiberglass, mixtures of plaster and horsehair in wall plastering, as well as use of natural materials such as bamboo in fishing rods. Some of the newer applications include high strength, low-weight bicycle rims, as well as the more familiar role in aircraft and automobile engine components."

"Gallium oxide is an important semiconductor material used in optoelectronic devices (flat panel and solar cell) catalysts and sensors. One of the methods to produce ?-Ga2O3 is the so-called hydrothermal route. It is practiced by Neo Gallium Compounds and comprises of two steps: (1) the production of mainly gallium-oxy-hydroxide in a pressure vessel by reacting metallic gallium with water at 200-220 ºC and (2) the calcination of gallium-oxy-hydroxide at 700-750 ºC to convert it into ?-Ga2O3. This paper describes this pressure hydrometallurgy process supported with relevant thermodynamic data and presents the characteristics of the ?-Ga2O3 powder produced for commercial purposes. INTRODUCTIONGallium is a relatively new metal, having been predicted by D. Mendeleev in 1871, discovered by P.E. Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875, and first commercially produced in the USA in 1943. Gallium is not rare, being more abundant in the earth crust than antimony, bismuth, molybdenum, silver and tungsten. However, few gallium minerals exist in nature, and the dispersion of gallium within other minerals add to the complexity of its recovery. In practice, gallium is found in dispersed state primarily in bauxites and in some sphalerites, and, to a much smaller extent, in some coals. At present, a very large proportion of the primary gallium in the world is recovered as a by-product of aluminum plants, mostly Bayer plants, where gallium is extracted from a bleed of the Bayer liquor (Roskill, 2011). In 2011, world production of primary gallium was estimated at 200 metric tonnes. In addition, there is a significant contribution of recycling to the overall yearly availability of the metal.Gallium exhibits fairly remarkable properties: it is liquid above 29.76 ºC, can be supercooled, and with its high boiling point (2204 ºC), is the metal with the widest liquid range. Gallium is magnetic, and is an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity. Gallium also displays a marked anisotropic electrical conductivity (Roskill, 2011). All these properties render gallium almost irreplaceable in the semiconductors (GaAs, GaN, GaSb, GaP wafers) and the optoelectronics industry (flat panel, solar cell)."

"Two recent decisions by the Canadian courts could reduce the taxes paid by many profitable mines in Canada. At a time when the mining sector is hurting from an ever increasing tax burden and soft prices, the results of two cases are welcome news. Mining companies are well advised to check prior years&apos; tax returns in the context of these developments. IntroductionSince 1976, the income tax legislation has provided a reduced rate of tax for taxpayers engaged in the mining of mineral resources, through the mechanism of the ""resource allowance"". The deduction given for the resource allowance effectively reduces the federal rate of tax by one quarter on resource profits. In general terms, ""resource profits"" are defined to include a taxpayer&apos;s income from: the production and processing in Canada of ore to any stage that is not beyond the prime metal stage (or the pellet stage or its equivalent in the case of iron ore); and, royalties computed with reference to the amount of value of production from mining operations in Canada.In computing income from these sources, the taxpayer must deduct expenses that may reasonably be regarded as applicable to those sources, with the exception of expenditures for Canadian exploration and development or financing costs.As a result of the mechanics of the calculation of the resource allowance, one quickly realizes that the lower the expenses deducted from the resource profits, the higher the resource profits and consequently the higher the 25% resource allowance. The impact of the recent court cases is to narrow the range of expenses which are required to be deducted in the determination of the resource profits.The two cases are outlined below."

Characterization of a virgin and in-service Inconel 718 alloy was undertaken to study the changes caused by the service conditions on the grain size, ?? phase, MN-type nitrides and MC-type carbides. The size, distribution and volume fraction of these phases and grain size were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses. A considerable difference in the grain size, as well as distribution and volume fraction of the precipitates was observed in the in-service material as compared to the virgin Inconel 718. As a result of these microstructural changes, a notable dissimilarity in hardness between the materials investigated was observed. The results presented in this study are important for proper development of repair parameters and heat treatment of in-service Inconel 718 material.

"The Cape Ray Fault Zone of southwestern Newfoundland contains two notable electrum/ base metal sulphide quartz vein lode occurrences hosted by two contrasting lithological units, viz. a graphite schist horizon and a granite. The two occurrences, although in proximity, are not in direct contact, but, based on geochronological, geochemical and isotopic evidence, they were apparently deposited from hydrothermal fluids generated as a vapour phase from the magmatic progenitor of the Windowglass Hill granite.This paper provides further evidence, from REE and background A u and Ag data, for the magmatic origin of the hydrothermal fluids. Wall rocks to the electrum-bearing quartz veins in both the schists and granite have experienced a LREE depletion probably due to leaching by Cl-bearing solutions. Gold and silver contents are typically low in all rock types but there is a slight elevation in gold concentrations in those units in contact with the Window glass Hill granite. The granite also has the relatively highest gold and silver contents of any unit in the region.IntroductionThis paper presents the evidence from rare earth element (REE) and gold/silver concentration data for the magmatic origin of hydrothermal fluids responsible for deposition of the Cape Ray electrum deposits of southwestern Newfoundland. The two deposits occur in the Cape Ray Fault Zone (Fig. I) within the Windsor Point Group and Window glass Hill granite. The larger occurrence is called the Main Shear Showing and consists of a deformed quartz vein horizon, which extends for - 6 km, within the late Devonian Windsor Point Group. This unit is an intermixed ignimbrite and mafic tuff sequence with associated schists (metasediments) and gabbros. The host rocks to the mineralized quartz veins are interleaved graphite, chlorite and sericite schists. Basal ignimbrites within the Windsor Point Group have been dated, by Rb/Sr isotopic methods, at 377 ±21 Ma (Wilton, 1983a). The basal ignimbrites also have enriched REE patterns, an elevated initial Sr ratio (0.709) and a peraluminous-siliceous nature which suggest they resulted from the partial melting of continental crust (Wilton, 1984)."

The theory and practice of sampling of particulate material have been the focus of a continued attention on the part of the mining industry worldwide for almost a century now, because of its critical importance at all phases of a mining project, from exploration (bulk sampling, assaying) to production (grade control) and marketing (quality control). A powerful, complete theory was put together by P. Oy (1968 to i982), but its applications to gold ores have met with limited success to date, due to the inadequacy of its sampling variance and minimum sample mass determination formulae to the challenging case of gold ores. This paper presents a research project completed at Inco Exploration and Technical Services Inc., using a geostatistical approach, to shed light on the results of P.Gy&apos;s theory, and adapt them to the case of particulate gold ores. After a reminder of Gy&apos;s formulae and a simplified demonstration of the generic form of Gy&apos;s and more traditional formulae, an empirical approach, based on sampling experiments from four gold deposits, shows how Gy&apos;s formulae must be corrected to adjust to the case of gold ores. The generality of the results formula is then substantiated with a geostatistical analysis of the problem. A parameterized formula results, and indications are given on how to fit its parameters to experimental data. Application guidelines and charts to fit any case and budget are presented, along with a detailed practical example.

Preliminary studies of the potential for the production of warm water (up to perhaps 150°C) have been carried out in the Plains region of Western Canada. Production might be from depths as great as about 5 km . Natural waters in this temperature range are currently being used for space heating in other parts of the world. The geography and stratigraphy of the Prairie Provinces are reviewed in terms of their apparent potential for warm-water production. Temperature, salinity and other data provided by wells drilled by the oil and gas industry are reviewed and problem areas are outlined.

Condition-based maintenance is replacing preventive maintenance in many industrial operations as a result of gains in productivity. Preventive maintenance is strictly time-based which means that as long as the prescribed time is sufficiently short, failures are prevented. The trade-offs between shorter cycles and increased downtime is a fine balancing act. Condition-based maintenance is gaining momentum as the more cost-effective and green solution to finding the optimal maintenance cycle and improving overall productivity. In the mining industry, various parameters of heavy equipment are monitored continuously to provide feedback for maintenance events. However, strain, shock, and vibration, key factors which lead to yielding and fatigue of metal parts, are not generally monitored by built-in systems, mainly due to the complexity of sensor installation and computational intensity of data processing. Scanimetrics has developed a stand-alone, add-on wireless system for measuring strain, shock, and vibration in heavy equipment and components, the data from which can be directly used to trigger maintenance events. The present system is being deployed in tar sands mining equipment. The system consists of a portable display and control unit, a software platform consisting of data management, sensor instrumentation and data analysis, and wireless strain sensor units, which can be easily installed on equipment. Data from the sensors can be gathered throughout the mine site, processed instantly, and used to generate condition-based maintenance events, improving overall uptime of the equipment and overall productivity of the mining operation.

The HydroFloat TM is an innovative fluidized-bed separator that can substantially increase the upper particle size that can be successfully treated by flotation. Recent studies conducted using laboratory, bench-scale and pilot-scale equipment indicate that this technology can be used to float coarse sulfide middlings that cannot be recovered by conventional flotation machines. Recent data collected from pilotscale tests conducted at a base metal concentrator indicate that this technology can float middlings particles as large as 850 microns in diameter containing as little as 1% exposed hydrophobic mineral. As such, the crossover of this technology into the base metals industry has the potential to substantially reduce grinding costs and increase concentrator recovery/capacity through the use of split-feed circuitry. The split-feed concept, which is often used for upgrading industrial minerals, involves segregation of the feed into more than one size class followed by subsequent upgrading using mills/separators/reagents specifically optimized for each size class. In this article, a split-feed circuit is described that utilizes two stages of classifying cyclones in conjunction with the HydroFloat_ separator. The circuit is designed to recover, recycle and regrind coarse middlings containing small amounts of valuable mineral while simultaneously rejecting coarse well-liberated siliceous gangue so that mill throughput can be increased. Simulation data conducted using well-known process models suggest that this approach can increase existing primary mill capacity by up to 25% with only modest investments in new classifying and flotation equipment.

Maintenance needs information about assets to optimize availability and production needs information about performance and consumption to maximize output. In considering both these needs together as, ?Asset Optimization?, the information systems that support them are critical. The theory of Asset Optimization derives from the Lean Manufacturing concepts developed by Toyota, but some changes are required to apply this to mining operations. In particular, mining operations require automated systems due to their geographic spread and they need a strong emphasis on capturing under-performance losses as well as delays and stoppages in production. Leading metal miners and coal miners alike have applied these systems to good effect in the last 10 years. The concepts developed initially in minerals processing plants are now being applied to the mines themsleves as well as the mining logistics chain. Production increases of 5?10% are achievable with the right implementation and consideration of the some key lessons learnt in the last 10 years. Putting these lessons into action is one key step in the goal of optimizing asset performance and thus utilizing the resource at lowest cost.

"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . A great amount of aggregate is utilized in civil engineering applications such as road construction, railway infrastructure, concrete production, etc. Igneous rocks are the preferred raw material due to their high strength and abrasion resistance. Rock quality assurance is a key factor and has great influence on the quality of constructions in civil engineering. One of the major problems encountered by both the producers and users of igneous aggregate rock is the fact that, with the passage of time, some specific rocks lose their strength, up to a complete loss of structure, i.e. disintegrate and degrade. This phenomenon has a great influence on the quality, strength and durability of aggregates. In the last decades, different methods and procedures such as the glycol test, the methylene blue dye test, as well as the Los Angeles test, have been introduced to distinguish rock properties, and to identify these problems. However, as these wet-chemical methods are time consuming, hard to perform, only to be applied to hand-piece samples, requiring special laboratory equipments, and are only possible to be accomplished under laboratory conditions, their application has always been severely limited. To address this widespread quality management problem of the quarry industry, a relatively quick, easy and user-friendly approach is necessary. It calls for a systematic solution with a device that can simply be used in the day-to-day routine of a mine for quality control of the quarry´s daily production. Our research is concentrated on developing a systematic method for early recognition and diagnosis of rock quality, in order to control and manage the quality of the quarry production in advance. Our new approach is based on two rock parameters: magnetic susceptibility and loss on ignition. The measurement of these parameters provides reliable information on the quality of the rock and allows the quality control process to be accomplished and performed at the borehole location. Our new approach has been assessed through extensive field and laboratory studies and has been implemented on the drill-cuttings of a basaltic andesite quarry. The results of the experiments are discussed in detail, including their impact on increasing resources and environmental protection.

Optimizing the long-term efficiency of passive systems for the treatment of highly contaminated acid mine drainage (AMD) is still a challenging issue. The optimization lies, among others, on improving the understanding and quantification of metal removal mechanisms in order to predict and enhance the stability of neo-formed minerals in secondary phases. Sorption, and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides, carbonates and bio-sulfides are likely the most important metal removal mechanisms involved in passive biotreatment of both slightly and highly contaminated AMD. In the same time, the preferred mechanism is precipitation of metal sulfides that are more stable and less pH dependent than carbonates and oxides-hydroxides. However, results of relatively recent research studies performed at laboratory scale showed that sulfides accounted only for up to 15% of total metals removed in passive bioreactors treating highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (around 500 mg/L). Several approaches were used in the aforementioned studies to understand and quantify metal removal mechanisms in spent reactive mixtures collected from long-term (12-15 months) operating column bioreactors. These included: thermodynamic equilibrium modeling and various chemical extractions and mineralogical analyses (such as single and sequential extractions, acid volatile sulfides-simultaneously extracted metals determination, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis). The large proportion of metals (85%) removed by sorption and precipitation as oxides-hydroxides and carbonates suggests a relatively high mobility of the neoformed minerals, especially in low pH conditions. However, no data is available on the long-term stability of spent reactive mixtures and, on the implications for the sustainable management of this type of solid waste. Lately there is almost a consensus that the efficiency of highly contaminated AMD treatment is warranted by the use of multi-step passive systems, including both chemical and biological units, installed sequentially. However, very few well-documented studies are available on the design, construction, operation and long-term efficiency of these multi-step systems. A leading example is the tri-unit passive system installed on the abandoned Lorraine mine site (Québec) to treat a highly contaminated AMD dominated by iron (about 2,500 mg/L). This tri-step system (160 m3), consisting in two bioreactors separated by a unit filled with wood ashes, achieves to date a satisfactory removal of iron (up to 99%). Moreover, based on the data collected during laboratory testing, iron was mainly removed in the wood ashes unit (from around 3,200 mg/L to 10 mg/L) by precipitation of oxides-hydroxides as predominant mechanism and only partially by sorption. However, no data is available on the actual metal removal mechanisms in the field. Overall, theses multi-step systems are more complex and their long-term performance is even less predictable than the single unit systems. This paper presents the current knowledge and the research needs on metal removal mechanisms in passive bioreactors and multi-step systems for the long-term treatment of highly contaminated AMD. A MOS capacitor hydrogen sensor array is reported for hydrogen gas distribution mapping. Si(100) was used as substrate for film deposition. After silicon oxide growing on the silicon surface with dry thermal oxidation, palladium film was sputtered on silicon oxide as hydrogen-sensitive gate material in MOS structure. The 3x3 sensor array was patterned on silicon substrate and packaged in one chip. Sensors&apos; response was test with impedance analyzer. The sensors in array were calibrated in the hydrogen concentration range from 10ppm to 10000ppm. The 2D hydrogen concentration distribution was obtained with the calibrated sensor array.
