The recovery of phosphate rack from the ores in the land-pebble district of Florida is a simple washing and screening operation. In the gashing plants coarse phosphate only is saved. Log-Washer overflows and screen-undersize products containing an appreciable content of fine phosphate are discarded. The phosphate grains in the material discharged to waste are generally finer in size than the mesh--14 to 20 mesh or 0.346 to 0.03 inch--of the finest screen in the washer. The operators state that the washers ordinarily recover from 50 to 60 per cent of the phosphate content of the matrix mined. Any increase that can be effected in the recovery of phosphate would be of advantage to the industry and would conserve the mineral resources of the country. In considering possible methods that might increase the recovery obtained in phosphate-washing plants the application of flotation, if it could be successfully developed, seemed to warrant investigation.

The Beckley mine is one of five new mines in a heretofore unmined portion of the Beckley coalbed. The remoteness of these new mines from prior mining and their greater overburden preclude applying methane emission experience obtained in the old mines. Four sections of the Beckley mine were monitored. The data gathered show that variations in methane emission cannot be explained by variations in coal production. Although overburdens varied by as much as 30 pct, no correlation with methane emissions could be determined. The rib emissions increase with increased length of rib from a section advancing into virgin coal and do not decline over a prolonged idle period (32 days) whereas some decline has been measured for a section not mining into virgin coal. The indication is that degasification prior to mining will reduce the hazard of methane emissions in this area of the Beckley coalbed.

The Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Ford Motor Co., investigated the recovery of polyurethane foam and other assorted plastics from the nonmagnetic reject of automobile shredders. Preliminary studies were con-ducted on a 1957 hulk augmented with additional foam and assorted plastics. The proposed flowsheet developed by the Bureau from the preliminary studies consists of a combination of screening, water classification, and gravity separation. The process was then tested on reject from two shredded 1972 cars. All of the foam and between 52 and 70 pct of the assorted plastics were recovered. The composition of the reclaimed foam concentrates ranged from 46 to 66 pct foam; the concentrates were hydrolyzed in laboratory tests by Ford Motor Co. to produce a reusable liquid mixture of polyether glycol monomers and toluene diamine.

We present an electromagnetic method taken from the well known radiogoniometer that allows us to locate at the surface of the ground the vertical axis of a magnetic antenna transmitter buried at a depth h in the earth. The method and the equipment achieved are called R. E. P. E. (Relevé Electromagnétique de Points Enterrés). They are daily used to accurately survey old quarries by using triangulation instruments at the surface of the earth rather than in galeries where the setting difficulties considerably reduce their accuracy and increase the work length. The results of several surveys allow us to give the optimum working conditions of the instruments and show that, when the transmitter is at a 20 meters depth, its position is known at the surface with an error lower than 1 centimeter. The power transmitter is of about 8 watts and we can find its location with an error smaller than 1 meter when buried at a depth of about 100 meters. This equipment may be successfully used for location of subsurface miners. The space surrounding the transmitter must then be free from ferromagnetic bodies.

Establish a procedure for reliably determining cation exchange parameters at an in situ mining site. The Problem Predicting the movement rates of pollutants from waste disposal sites requires reliable measurements of cation exchange parameters since cation exchange can retard pollutant movement. Reliable measurements of these parameters are also required for predicting the length of time needed to restore groundwater quality after in situ mining. Cation exchange is otten the controlling mechanism for the replacement of leach solution cations by the cations in the returning ground-water. Unfortunately, laboratory measurements using core samples are of minimal reliability. The uneven clay distribution at most sites produces a high variability in laboratory results. In addition the flow pattern in the laboratory tests is different from that in the field. Approach Bureau of Mines research has developed a field-test procedure that is quick and yields reliable and representative data. A corresponding data analysis procedure was also established in order to verify the' applicability of the computer simulation model of cation exchange used in the analysis, and of the general analysis procedure, with actual field data.

Tests have recently been conducted by the Bureau of wines on the ignition hazard of exposing heated filaments of electric mine lam bulbs in an explosive mixture of methane and air. This investigation was undertaken in order to settle a question that had arisen in connection with the safety of miners? electric lamps. For several years, in view of former studies made by the Bureau and reported in Bulletin 524, the fact that the heated filaments of even low voltage, lour candlepower bulbs constitute a danger was generally accepted by the Bureau's engineers. These early tests, as well as subsequent tests, were conducted with Pittsburgh natural was as the testing medium.

In this Bureau of Mines report, use of the photoemission of electrons to produce electric charges for the electrostatic separation of sonic dispersed minerals, which had previously been ground to pass a 43µ-opening sieve, is demonstrated. It appears that many of the oxides, carbonates, sulfides, and arsenides will respond to photoemission. Minerals least responsive are the oxides of silicon, the oxides of aluminum, and minerals that have a high concentration of these oxides. Although several synthetic ore mixtures did not yield to complete separation in a one-stage operation, it is probable that preliminary neutralization of the initial electric charges produced by powder dispersion will provide complete separation. That the separation can be carried out in air and without the use of reagents or heating, which are required in the present practice of electrostatically separating coarse granular feeds, is of special significance.

This report describes the design and operation of a digital instrumentation package for the Bureau of Mines improved torsion pendulum, a scientific instrument that measures the vibration damping of metallic materials. The new design eliminates manual analog-to-digital conversion, reduces the data acquisition time, and increases the precision of the measurements. The digital output can be coupled directly to a micro-processor or computer to produce the final data in real time.

Gadolinium, dysprosium, and yttrium are difficult to electrowin as high-purity liquid metals because of their high melting points (>1,300° C). Samarium metal is difficult to prepare directly by electrolysis because the metal reacts with the electrolyte. In this Bureau of Mines study, the rare-earth metal was electrodeposited on a solid manganese, chromium, or iron cathode to form a low-melting alloy. The alloy was then vacuum distilled to separate the rare-earth metal from the ferrous metal. A typical samarium metal product, obtained as the distillate from vacuum distillation of a samarium-iron alloy, contained 150 ppm oxygen, 80 ppm carbon, and 50 ppm iron as impurities, Gadolinium metal, obtained as a residue from the distillation of a gadolinium-chromium alloy, contained 300 ppm oxygen, 200 ppm carbon, and 100 ppm chromium.

As part of its water-jet assisted rock cutting research, the Bureau of Mines has initiated a study into the mechanism of rock fragmentation by water-jet-assisted mechanical tools. The objective of this research is to increase coal extraction efficiency by seeking an improved understanding of the synergistic relationship between mechanical cutters and water jets, enabling the design of more effective cutterheads. Rock chips collected during laboratory traverse speed jet-assisted cutting tests were analyzed with respect to the size distribution of the chips and the forces measured during cutting. As the water-jet pressure was increased, the size distribution of the product became coarser with V-face type cutting tools producing less fine material than conical cutting tools. Fracture mechanics theory accounted for less than 10 pet of the energy consumed during fragmentation of the rock. The energy consumed by processes other than rock breakage decreased with the use of water jets and increasing advance rate.

How It Works The acoustic cross-borehole apparatus operates by sending a seismic wave from a transmitter in one borehole to a receiver in a second bore? hole which may be located as far as fifty feet away, depending on the wave transmission quality of the rock. Reduce methane levels around the shearer machine during longwall mining by directing more of the available airflow along the face and over the shearer body. Approach To address the entire mining cycle, two techniques were combined to dilute and clear the methane liberated from the face by the shearer during cutting. The first is the modified shearer clearer system, which is used during the entire face pass. This is combined with the walkway curtain which is used only during the headgate cutout. How It Works Methane ignitions are one of the most potentially serious hazards facing longwall mine operators. The high rate of coal extraction on longwall sections can liberate a significant quantity of methane during a pass. The modified shearer clearer is used to dilute methane concentrations along the entire face for both cut directions. The shearer clearer system, originally designed as a dust control technique, uses a series of water sprays located on the shearer body to direct more airflow along the face and over the shearer. (See Technology News issues, #112, #118, and #221). The only change from the original shearer clearer design is the addition of three sprays to the return-side splitter-arm/ shearer interface. The additional sprays help to ventilate the area behind the shearer body.

A laboratory study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to investigate the technical feasibility of decomposing hydrous magnesium chlorides by using a steam pyrohydrolysis technique. This procedure consisted of injecting steam into the atmosphere of a decomposition furnace containing samples of hydrous magnesium chloride and determining the rate of hydrolysis by measuring the rate of chloride evolution. The variables investigated were temperature, amount of water vapor in the decomposition atmosphere, and hydration stage of magnesium chloride. The application of steam was shown to accelerate both the rate and completeness of magnesium chloride decomposition reactions. For example, when magnesium chloride hexahydrate is exposed to a furnace temperature of 600' C in an air atmosphere for 20 minutes, the decomposition is 37 percent. Under identical conditions in a steam atmosphere, the decomposition is in excess of 70 percent. The magnesium oxide produced by the steam pyrohydrolysis of magnesium chloride dihydrate at 800° C contained 98 percent magnesium oxide. Based on magnesium oxide composition, this is equivalent to that of burned magnesite produced at temperatures in excess of 1,300° C. To demonstrate the quality of the product on a practical basis, metal reduction tests have shown it to be equivalent to reagent-grade magnesium oxide as a carbothermic reduction feed material.

This report presents a mathematical model for the propagation of UHF radio waves in the large cross-section tunnels of a room and pillar limestone mine, and describes the analysis of a small amount of propagation data obtained in a limestone mine. The model and analysis is based on the waveguide mode theory developed earlier for the transmission of UHF waves in coal mine tunnels, with allowance for propagation losses due to refraction into the tunnel walls, to scattering by wall roughness, and to long range random tilt of the walls. Propagation around corners and through pillars is also examined based on a ray theory approach, together with the beneficial effects of placing reflectors at intersections to significantly reduce corner losses. The theory is found to be in fair agreement with the data; however, additional in-mine measurements are needed to provide a more conclusive test of the model.

The effect of various ion concentrations on uranium absorption from a sodium carbonate solution by a strong-base, anion resin was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in support of its objective to help assure an adequate uranium supply for future needs. The studies were conducted to improve the recovery of uranium from in situ leach solutions by ion exchange. The effects of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, and sulfate ions were examined. Relatively low (less than 5 g/l) concentrations of chloride, sulfate, and bicarbonate were found to be detrimental to the absorption of uranium. High (greater than 10 g/l) carbonate concentrations also adversely affected the uranium absorption. In addition, the effect of initial resin form was investigated in tests of the chloride, carbonate, and bicarbonate forms; resin form was shown to have no effect on the absorption of uranium.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. This paper summarizes the cause and effect of induced voltages in multiple conductor cables supplying alternating current power to equipment in under- ground coal mines. The investigation of this phenomenon revealed that the electrical energy produced by the resultant electric arcing between the frames of mobile electric face equipment was of a sufficient magnitude to ignite explosive methane-air mixtures. The results of laboratory tests and field tests made between equipment frames during actual operation in numerous coal mines are discussed. Several methods of eliminating or suppressing the induced voltages to nonincendive levels are also described. It is the purpose of this paper to convey to the mining industry a knowledge of this problem and to recommend methods of eliminating or reducing these induced voltages or arcing currents to safe levels.

Reduce dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping them upwind of the primary cutting drum. Approach Use a different coal cutting sequence by cutting from headgate-to-tailgate, making the cleanup pass from tail-gate-to-headgate. How It Works The cutting action of the shearer drum is usually the primary source of respirable dust at longwall shearer faces. Dust exposure of the shearer operator is deter-mined by his position relative to the lead drum, which is normally in the raised position taking a full sump. On long-wall faces where the cut pass is taken from tail-to-head, against the primary airflow, the shearer operators must remain at their controls, on the return-air-side of the primary dust source, to maintain proper control. A simple method to lower shearer operators' dust exposures is to extract the primary coal from head-to-tail, thus positioning the operators up-wind of the lead cutting drum. The bottom coal is then cut, and the floor cleaned by the trailing drum during the tail-to-head cleanup pass. This sequence places the primary dust source, the cutting action of the shearer drums, on the return-air side of both shearer operators, except when cutting out at the longwall headgate.
