Bench-scale selective-flocculation tests were conducted on samples of Florida phosphate and Western phosphate process tailings to recover upgraded phosphate concentrates. After physical and mineralogical characterization, the slurry samples were treated with a broad suite of flocculants with a range of molecular weights and anionic functional groups. Parameters investigated included pH, dispersant and flocculant types, and dose; conditioning parameters and settling times were, for the most part, held constant. Where selectivity was achieved, phosphate minerals remained dispersed, whereas silicate minerals flocculated and settled. Single-stage tests using reagents with low to medium anionic characteristics produced upgraded phosphate concentrates at moderately elevated pH. Two- stage site-blocking tests, in which low-molecular-weight flocculants were used as site-blocking agents, gave improved results.

"There are many multi-layer coal reserves in China which account for nearly 20 to 25% of the existing proven reserves. When the coals are mined in a descending order using the fully mechanized long wall mining method, they usually have roof collapse with cavity and air leak in roadways and long wall stopes; this is especially relevant when the thickness of the rock between two coals is less than 5.0 m, as the roof stability of lower seam would be greatly reduced. At the Wuhushan Mine, such abnormal strata behavior occurs, including abnormal support stress, irregular period roof pressure, and roof falls in the face. The main reasons for these behaviors include smaller roof thickness, lower rock strength, and mining influence of upper coal; these reasons were determined by analyzing the in situ conditions. A mechanics-based model of the mine geometry was set up to study the sources of stress, the stress evolution of coal, and the discriminant method of roof stability; to obtain the smallest safe thickness of roof between two coal layers, numerical modeling was applied to analyze the relations between the roof thickness and its displacement distribution. Based on the above research, the No.1001 face was divided into easy roof caving zone (ERCZ), roof caving transition zone (RCTZ), and unlikely to roof caving zone (URCZ). In the ERCZ, comprehensive grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented; in the RCTZ, local grouting to reinforce the roof was implemented. Furthermore, a face stability control index and its range were developed in a fully mechanized face combined with mine pressure observation. After implementing this strategy, there have been no unexpected roof caving or other serious strata behaviors.INTRODUCTIONChina is the country with the largest coal production in the world, and the conditions for its coal seams are particularly complicated. For example, in China’s Datong, Wuda, Pingdingshan, and Qinshui mining areas, there are a large number of multi-layer coal seams. The thickness of these coal seams ranges from 1.3 m to more than 10 m, and the spacing between layers is from under 1.0 m to over 30 m. A common problem with these coal seams is that one layer of mining has a large impact on other coal seams, which are customarily referred to as close-distance coal seams. According to statistics, close-distance coal seams account for about 20–25% and 15–18% of China’s coal reserves and production, respectively.From the reference research of Huang (1999, 2002, 2018) and Tu (2010, 2011) we can learn that in the mining process of close-distance coal seams, downward mining is mainly used. When the upper-layer coal is mined, it has a huge mining disturbance effect on the floor (that is, the roof of the lower coal). The mining disturbance increases the mining fissure in the rockmass and weakens the strata strength. The mining problem formed by this issue is that when the lower coal is mined, problems such as difficulty in roadway support, collapse of stope roof, and difficulty in ventilation are often encountered. Especially for the mining of medium-thick coal seam groups with a layer spacing of less than 5.0 m, there has been a large-scale roof collapse accident with a fall height of more than 10.0 m. In response to such problems, domestic and foreign scholars and engineers such as Tan, Zhao, and Xiao (2010), Xie et al. (2017), and others have also carried out targeted theoretical and practical research."

Vince Lombardi once said, "Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect." When it comes to building a mine that will operate at the optimum level for the set of geologic conditions from which it was developed, Lombardi's remark might be paraphrased to describe the problem: planning won't guarantee the best possible mine operation unless it is the best possible mine planning. Any sacrifice in the best possible mine planning introduces the risk that the end results may not reach the optimum mine operation desired. This section addresses many of the factors to be considered in the initial phase of mine planning. These factors have the determining influence on the mining method, the size of the operation, the size of the mine openings, the mine productivity, the mine cost, and, eventually, the economic parameters used to determine whether or not the mineral reserve even should be developed. A little-known fact, even within the metal-mining community, is that room-and-pillar mining accounts for most of the underground mining in the united States. According to a 1973 study on noncoal mining (Anon., 1974), more than 76% of the producing mines [of over 1089 t/d (1200 stpd) capacity] produced approximately 70 000 000 t (77,000,000 st) or 60% of the nation's underground tonnage of material by room-and-pillar mining. That same year, 96.8% of the nation's under- ground coal mines produced 262 950 000 t (289,911,000 st) of coal extracted from room-and-pillar mines (Anon., 1976). Thus, nearly 333 000 000 t (367,000,000 st) of the United States' raw material is produced from mines using some form of the room-and-pillar mining system. Because approximately 90% of all mining in the United States is done by some variation of room-and- pillar mining, it is appropriate to give special emphasis to the effects of the various elements of mine planning on room-and-pillar mining. The relationship of these elements to other mining methods will become apparent as the elements are described in later sections herein. TECHNICAL INFORMATION NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY MINE PLANNING Assuming that the reserve to be mined has been delineated with diamond-drill holes, the items listed in the following paragraphs need to be established with respect to mine planning for the mineralized material. Geologic and Mineralogic Information The geologic and mineralogic information needed includes the following: 1) The size (length, width, and thickness) of the areas to be mined within the overall area to be considered, including multiple areas, zones, or seams. 2) The dip or plunge of each mineralized zone, area, or seam, noting the maximum depth to be mined. 3) The continuity or discontinuity within each of the mineralized zones. 4) Any swelling or narrowing of each mineralized zone. 5) The sharpness between the grades of mineralized zones within the material considered economically minable. 6) The sharpness between the ore and waste cutoff, including whether this cutoff can be determined by observation or must be determined by assay or some special tool; whether this cutoff also serves as a natural parting resulting in little or no dilution, or whether the break between ore and waste must be induced entirely by the mining method; and whether or not the mineralized zone beyond (above or below) the existing cutoff represents submarginal economic value that may be- come economical at a later time. *7) The distribution of various valuable minerals making up each of the minable areas. 8) The distribution of the various deleterious minerals that may be harmful in processing the valuable mineral. 9) Whether or not the identified valuable minerals are interlocked with other fine-grained mineral or waste material. 10) The presence of alteration zones in both the mineralized and the waste zones. Structural Information (Physical and Chemical) The needed structural information includes the following: * 1 ) The depth of cover. 2) A detailed description of the cover including: the type of cover; * the structural features in relation to the mineralized zone; * the structural features in relation to the proposed mine development; and * the presence of and information about water, gas, or oil that may be encountered. 3) The structure of the host rock (back, floor, hanging wall, footwall, etc.), including: * the type of rock; * the approximate strength or range of strengths; * any noted weakening structures; * any noted zones of inherent high stress; noted zones of alteration; the porosity and permeability; * the presence of any swelling- clay or shale interbedding; the rock quality designation (RQD) throughout the various zones in and around all of the mineralized area to be mined out; the temperature of the zones proposed for mining; and the acid generating nature of the host rock. 4) The structure of the mineralized material, including all of the factors in item 3 plus: * the tendency of the mineral to change character after being broken, i.e., oxidizing, degenerating to all fines, recompacting into a solid mass, becoming fluid, etc.; * the siliceous content of the ore; the fibrous content of the ore; and the acid generating nature of the ore. Currently he is president of KD Engineering and Metcon Research. He had it lucky when he went to school because there were only 44 elements in the periodic table, I understand. [laughter] Here's Joe. JOE KEANE: I'm doing this under protest. Maybe we can start the slides. Mr. Halbe gave me this topic, but I don't like it. I don't like Mr. Halbe either [laughter] because of the way he shanghaied me into this. He called me up on the phone and said this is what you're going to speak about: "Five Things I Never Want to See Again in Plant Design," and I said, "Huh!" Then I started getting stuff from SME about how to make a presentation. I have decided to change the title to "More Than Five Things I Never Want to See in Plant Design," since you can't have a completely negative speech; you have to have other topics. So we will have some other, not completely nonrelated, topics to sort of break the tension. I tried to find a joke to open with. I talked to Omar Mutati. All of his jokes were either about Bill Clinton, our beloved President, or they were too filthy to say in a mixed group. [laughter] So I decided to start this out with a profound statement. Gold was first discovered in Alabama in 1830. Before a decade had passed more than 20,000 people were employed in the various gold districts scattered across east-central Alabama. By 1849 most of the presently defined gold districts were known with such towns as Arbacoochee, Chulafinnee, Goldville, Pinetucky, and Idaho being the principal mining camps. The California gold rush of 1849 signaled the end of intensive prospecting in the Alabama Piedmont for the precious metal. Reactivation of many of the old gold districts has been attempted several times since 1849. Significant activity and development took place between 1874 and 1880, 1888 and 1916, and 1929 and 1936. Locally, some of the development met with moderate succes. The last productive gold mine in Alabama ceased production in 1935. The sharp increase in gold prices since 1973 has caused renewed interest in the potential values of gold of the Alabama gold districts. Most of the gold workings have been abandoned for nearly 75 years and are for the most part inaccessible for convential property evaluation. The early gold miners and prospectors in Alabama were more intent upon finding and mining the valuable metal than in recording their activities for future generations. No matter how interesting or historically significant these records might have been the miners kept no records and left behind them few maps as clues to their activities. Inasmuch as most of the old gold districts have been extensively mined and prospected during the past 150 years, there is very little chance of finding large deposits through conventional outcrop prospecting methods. Similarly, the present geologic knowledge of the various districts is insufficient to launch successful exploration programs looking for large blind lode deposits in new locations within the general gold bearing region.

In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)

Pluor Utah has been closely associated with the engineering and construction of earth bottom thickeners for porphyry copper operations, for the counter-current decantation circuit of a gold cyanide plant and similar applications in mineral processing. During the past 13 years, some 18 of these thickeners have entered service and the bottoms have proved to be watertight structures with no particular problems encountered. In the course of this work, technological advances have been realized in the procedures for engineering and construction of these units to assure watertight basins and achieve all possible economies in construction. This paper describes the successful application of engineering and construction techniques for a number of these thickeners.

One responsibility of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is to encourage the development of mineral resources within the state. A second responsibility is to ensure that mineral development does not adversely impact other natural resources, including the water resources of the state. One approach the Division of Minerals has taken to fulfill these responsibilities is to conduct cooperative research with the mining industry. To encourage mineral development the Division has cooperated with industry on projects related to exploration, mining, and mineral processing. To examine environmental issues the Division has worked in concert with iron ore, base metal, and precious metal exploration and mining companies, as well as the Western Governors' Association, US Bureau of Mines, US Bureau of Land Management, and the US EPA for the past 20 years. These projects were conducted to evaluate methods of predicting, preventing, controlling, and treating problematic mine waste drainages, as well as mine waste revegetation. This paper I) briefly summarizes cooperative projects conducted, 2) enumerates elements which have contributed to the success of cooperative projects, and 3) describes changes implemented for future projects at the Division's new field and laboratory research facilities, as well as at existing mine and plant sites.

Flooded-bed scrubbers on continuous miners have been shown to be an effective respirable dust control technology, traditionally used during the extraction of extended cuts of up to 12.2 m (40 ft). To effectively use scrubbers in faces that employ exhaust ventilation, the return ventilation curtain or tubing should be located outby the scrubber discharge on the continuous miner, which results in a setback distance from the face of approximately 12.2 m (40 ft). The goal of this research was to compare respirable dust levels generated in 6.1 m (20 ft) cuts when using extended curtain setbacks with a scrubber operating to dust levels in 6.1 m (20 ft) cuts when using traditional exhaust face ventilation without a scrubber operating. Dust surveys were completed at three mines with area and personal sampling conducted to quantify respirable dust concentrations on a cut-by-cut basis. Sampling results did not show a statistically significant difference in respirable dust at the continuous miner or shuttle car locations with and without the scrubber operating. However, with the scrubber operating, respirable dust concentrations in the return airstream downwind of the miner showed reductions of 91%, 86%, and 40% at Mines A, B, and C, respectively. The reductions at Mines A and B were statistically significant. Likewise, reductions in respirable quartz dust levels in the miner return were observed at all three mines, with statistically significant reductions of over 80% observed at Mines A and B. Consequently, operation of the flooded-bed scrubber did not impact respirable dust levels in the face area but did significantly reduce respirable and quartz dust levels downwind of the continuous miner. These results were obtained with the mines operating at or above the minimum operating levels specified in their ventilation plans.

Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

"It is well known that tunnelling involves a high degree of risk. Conventional risk management only evaluates risks and chooses mitigation measures before the start of a project. However, mitigation measures also introduce risks, which are ignored in the conventional risk control process when choosing different measures. The Multiphase Risk Management Method (MRMM) takes the risk of mitigation measures and dynamic risk control into consideration. This paper introduces this new method and provides a flow chart for better understanding. A case study of the MRMM is given based on Ningbo Metro Line 3, the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China. INTRODUCTION Tunnelling itself is generally complex and involves a high degree of uncertainty (Huang, 2006; Thompson and Thompson, 2006). In recent years, several metro tunnel projects in China have been involved in accidents (Wang, 2006; Gong and Zhang, 2012).As a result, Chinese tunnel engineers are paying more and more attention to risk management in tunnel projects (Xiao-lin and Ping et al., 2009; Zhong and Jia et al., 2014), and scholars around the world have put forward many management processes. Existing risk management mainly focuses on a particular stage of a tunneling project. Tunnel engineers or other project parties usually carry out risk assessment and set up schemes or choose mitigation measures before a project begins. The risk from this initial risk assessment may be defined as the initial risk (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). This kind of managing process has been widely used for its simplicity and comprehensibility. However, this static theory cannot properly reveal the dynamic character of the risk during tunnelling. In addition, to reduce the risk from unacceptable level to acceptable level also calls for optimum measures. Therefore, the multiphase risk management method was proposed (Bai and Dai et al., 2013). The purpose of this paper is to introduce and develop the MRMM, and to provide a brief flow chart to illustrate the risk management process based on it. Finally, an example of the first quasi rectangle shield tunnel in China in Ningbo Metro Line 3 is illustrated. It analyzes the initial and secondary risk and sets up a risk control system."

The near-infrared (NIR) (12,000-4,000 cm-1) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, between the mid-infrared and visible, has often been viewed by spectroscopists to be of limited utility. This is unfortunate, and recently the use of the NIR has increased greatly, primarily for the quantitative analysis of food and agricultural products. However, many other areas of application of NIR spectroscopy remain unexamined. In this paper a novel use of NIR in the area of flotation chemistry is demonstrated. Specifically, it is shown that NIR/Internal Reflection Spectroscopy (IRS) can be used to quantify collector adsorption reactions in-situ.

With increased stripping ratios and with dwindling ore content, the mining fraternity is increasingly turning to larger and larger equipment for profitable open pit operations. The availability of higher horsepower prime movers and increased capacity electric transmissions using either wheel mounted or axle mounted traction motors makes a reality of single axle, rear dump trucks having 150 to 250 ton capacity. The size of electric loading shovels is inherently geared to the size of haulage equipment. To work effectively with this new generation of trucks, the Harnischfeger Corporation has introduced its P&H Model 2800 with a capacity of 20 to 25 cubic yards and a working weight of nearly 1,500,000 pounds. The Model 2800, depicted in Figure 1 loading a 200 ton truck, has many new electric and mechanical features designed to give excellent production and low cost operation. Chief among the new features is the ELECTRO TORQUE* control system. ELECTROTORQUE is a completely static, solid state electronic system supplying controlled power both to the armature and to the fields of the d.c. shovel drive motors. It eliminates many major electrical rotating machines and their attendant maintenance. The system was developed jointly by ASEA of Sweden and Harnischfeger Corporation.

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. The primary factors that determine the marketability of coal from various supply centers in the U.S. are coal quality and supply; i.e. low sulfur, moderate- to high- Btu coals have large market areas when compared to less expensive but poorer quality coals. Price is the major factor in the competitive marketing of similar coal products. Good quality, (moderate- to high- Btu, low sulfur) coals from the Powder River and central Appalachian basins are marketed over large areas of the country, and central Appalachian coal is widely distributed in foreign markets, primarily as coking coal. In contrast, poorer quality bituminous coal (low calorific value and/or high sulfur) from the Illinois Basin, northern Appalachian Basin, and lignite from the Gulf Coast is marketed in or near the States in which it was mined even though the price at the mines may be lower than mine prices for central Appalachian coal. Widespread distribution of sub-bituminous Powder River Basin coal is enhanced by its exceptionally low mining costs, which offsets transportation costs to distant markets.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. The mining methods used at many opencast brown coal mines in Poland and the German Democratic Republic are not used in the US to any extent. Using bucketwheel excavators, bucket chain excavators, and mobile conveyor bridges, the mining techniques may offer efficient, economic alternatives for operators in the US. These mining methods were observed during visits to several open-cast brown coal mines in Eastern Europe over the past two years. Some of them may be particularly attractive for the large lignite mines being planned in North Dakota and Texas.

"The global mining industry is facing increasing challenges in terms of geological, technological and social aspects. Potential exploi-tation of deposits shows a tendency to increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. A promising approach to deal with these constrains is by applying alternative extraction methods like (bio-)hydrometallurgy as in-situ leaching (ISL) technology. The Bergakademie Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the “Biohydrometallurgical Center for strategic Elements” (BHMZ) to foster the interdisciplinary research along the entire biohy-drometallurgical process chain to extract indium from sulfide ores. The involved Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of a pilot-scale underground testing facility for microbial in-situ stope leaching in its “Research and Educational Mine”. This paper discusses the potential of in-situ bioleaching under technological aspects. In addition, different conditioning approaches based on hydraulic and explosive methods for enhanced permeability in the formation are introduced and the gathered data will be presened. INTRODUCTION A reliable, substantial and sustainable supply of raw materials is of crucial importance for any industrialized country. This dependency applies to “strategic elements” including rare earth elements (REEs), platinum group metals (PGMs) as well as a variety of other metals like indium and germanium which are needed for high-tech industry and products such as electric and electronic devices, fibre optics and laser technology (Barakos et al., 2016; European Commission, 2010). Due to the economic growth of the BRIC-countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China), the resource policy of China as well as the volatile world mar-ket prices of different metals the availability of these critical raw materi-als and therefore the dependency of the high-tech producing countries has become increasingly important (Barakos et al, 2016). Adequate supply is often affected by the increasing depth of de-posits, lower metal concentrations and more complex ore mineralogy. In addition, mining activities are increasingly restricted by their envi-ronmental and social impact and footprints. As a consequence, con-ventional mining and processing methods are limited by high energy consumption and technical constraints."
