In connection with Project Payette, which is concerned with the detection of underground nuclear explosions, it was necessary to determine the technical feasibility of constructing and maintaining a large (approximately 315 feet in diameter) unsupported underground cavity at a depth of approximately 2700 feet in the Tatum Salt Dome in Mississippi. The dimensions and the location of the cavity in the salt dome were governed by criteria laid down by the Atomic Energy Commission. Within the framework of the specified criteria, cavities of various shapes and dimensions could be utilized. One aspect of the feasibility study was to investigate the structural stability of various cavity shapes and to recommend a preferred shape. This paper summarizes the studies that were conducted to evaluate the structural stability of various proposed cavities.(l)

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. INTRODUCTION The requirement that is placed on owners and operators of underground mines to protect workers against the health hazard of inhaling radioactive materials which are short-lived decay products of 222Rn can be satisfied by applying a considerable variety of what we may call "engineering" solutions as well as a number of "administrative" remedies to the problem. The most obvious of the "engineering" approaches has always been that of forced ventilation, in which relatively clean (i.e., radon-free) air from aboveground is drawn or pushed through the mine workings by a system of fans and ducts. This relatively clean air, in sweeping through the drifts, stopes and haulageways, dilutes the radon and radon-daughter concentrations in the air of the mine, and performs the added beneficial function of removing the daughter-mixture quickly enought to limit grow-in of the longer-lived nuclides in the group that make up the "toxic trio" on which the Working Level (IM) unit is based. Effective as the dilution-ventilation method is for control of WL in most underground mining situations, however, the increasing strictness of control measures that have been imposed on the mining industry over the last two decades have demanded measures of even greater effectiveness. In times of poor markets for yellow-cake and other products of the mines, mine operators are pressed to reduce operating costs, and the installation of additional primary ventilation capacity can be a severe burden on a mine that is already laboring under an unfavorable earning power. When traditional dilution-ventilation systems alone cannot meet the requirement for WI, control, radiation safety engineers and ventilation engineers begin to look at alternatives and auxiliary methods. Since the radon which produces the toxic daughter products originates in the rock of the mine walls, and since, in most United States mines, that rock is a porous sandstone through which air can move under the effect of atmospheric pressure gradients, and through which radon can diffuse relatively freely, one way to help control the growth of WL would be to hinder the escape of radon from that reservior of porous rock. An appealing; method for hindering that natural flux of radon-polluted air from the walls of the mine has long been apparent; namely, to apply a low-permeability coating over the surface of the rock, thus sealing the radon in place and, in theory at least, preventing its escape into the mine air. Our 1970 report to the U.S. Federal Radiation Council on the subject of cost impacts of proposed changes in the occupational standards for exposure of underground uranium miners to airborne radon daughters noted the possibility of using polymeric wall sealants as a means of controlling radon-pollution of mine air. Since that time a number of reports have appeared in the technical literature advocating this technique for restraining the escape of radon from building materials, mill tailings, and other materials containing 226Ra, in addition to the surfaces of underground mine workings. During this period, some controversy has occurred over the question of the probable effectiveness of wall sealants in limiting the escape of radon from the rock. Our 1970 report speculated that flaws (cracks and "pinholes") in the coating might be all but unavoidable in practice, and that even a conservative estimate of the frequency of such flaws would lead to a prediction of ineffectiveness. Hammon et al, in a laboratory evaluation of radon sealants conducted by Lawrence Livermore Laboratory of the University of California in 1975 on behalf of U.S. Bureau of Mines, concluded that a wide variety of polymeric coatings would provide "nearly 100% effectiveness" in restrain¬ing escape of radon from mine wall surfaces if applied in "thicknesses between 5 and 10 mil" (125-250 [y]pm). John Franklin and co-workers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories in Spokane, Washington, have carried the experiments with polymeric sealants through additional laboratory tests and into actual mine environments, reporting that selected sealants could provide attenuation of radon flux by a factor of four (75-80% reduction). Robert Bates and John Edwards of USBM developed a computer-assisted mathematical/physical model that predicts a relatively small effect of flaws in a low-permeability coating on the radon flux from a sandstone-type matrix. FIELD TEST Since all actual experimental work with wall sealants showed some beneficial effect on radon attenuation (even if not as exciting as the "nearly 100%" predicted by Hammon), USBM was encouraged to extend its evaluation to an actual operating uranium mine, and awarded a contract for that work to Arthur D. Little, Inc. in September 1979. We were fortunate in obtaining the voluntary cooperation of Atlas Minerals Division of Atlas Corp., who operate a mill and several underground mines in and around Moab, Utah. Atlas made available for our use a small T-shaped drift in their Pandora Mine in LaSal, Utah, and provided space for instrumentation and recordkeeping by our field crew in a surface building near the mine entry. Atlas also provided electricity and water to the test site, together with assistance in establishing necessary ventilation, removing rubble from the site, conducting periodic WL surveys and furnishing auxiliary man-power for the heavy hard work of coating the walls with gunite prior to application of the polymeric sealant. "The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

Pursuant to the Federal Surface Mining Act of 1977 and the Illinois Surface Mining Act of 1980, Illinois has adopted revegetation success standard regulations that include the Agricultural Land Productivity Formula. The Formula establishes yield goals and standards to measure the success of meeting yield goals for reclaimed prime farmlands. The formula compares the quality of the pre-mining soils in the permit area and the county, to the crop production achieved on the reclaimed permit area and the county crop yield in a given crop year. The regulations also specify acceptable crops, erosion control requirements and time frames for demonstrating success.

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

INTRODUCTION The potential health impact from uranium milling operations is mainly associated with long-term releases of radioactive contaminants from the mill tailings.(1,2) The major mechanisms for mitigating these potential releases focus on increasing the tailings containment with the addition of migration barriers such as thick earthen covers and clay liners. Some limited investigation has also focused on reducing the radionuclide source terms. This alternative approach has some desirable features, but stringent cost requirements are placed upon source removal methods in order for them to be economically favorable. A cost effectiveness evaluation is presented herein, in which costs for containment methods are used to establish maximum cost guidelines for the source removal methods. The 230U decay chain, shown in Figure 1 contains the radioisotopes of major concern, 230Th, 226Ra, 222Rn and its short-lived alpha-emitting daughters, When the uranium is removed in the milling process, these isotopes, which are normally not removed remain in the tailings solids. The general pathways to the environment from uranium mill tailings are depicted in Figure 2. The dominant pathways are radon to the atmosphere and radium and thorium to a groundwater aquifer. The magnitude of the contaminants released into these pathways can be characterized by the following parameters: 1. The 230Th and 226Ra content. 2. The emanating power for radon. The fraction of radon generated that is free to migrate. 3. The leach rates. Source reduction methods seek to reduce the magnitude of any or all of these parameters. In general the dose rates are proportional to the source terms. For radon production the source term is proportional to the product of the radium concentration, R, and the emanating power, E, so that the risk is reduced by the same factor that reduces RE. For example, if the radium content is reduced by 95 percent, but E is increased by a factor of two, then the dose rates are reduced by an order of magnitude. Various coal mine robots (CMRs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are implemented to explore unknown mines for improving the safety and efficiency of mining. It is challenging for CMRs and UAVs to achieve accurate positioning due to the absence of the Global Positioning System (GPS), poor lighting conditions, and similar geometric features in complex mine scenes. LiDAR-based localization and mapping methods are more accurate than others, while long-time running in large-scale scenarios will introduce nonnegligible cumulative errors. This study presents a semantic-aided Li- DAR simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) with loop closure, which leverages the uniqueness of mine intersection structure to establish stable semantic loop closure. Specifically, we propose a semantic intersection descriptor of translation and rotation invariance, which encodes 3D point clouds of the same intersection from different positions and viewpoints into a unified image. By using the semantic descriptor, we can construct a constant loop constraint when the same intersection is revisited from different directions to reduce cumulative drift. We provide experimental validation using large data sets collected in two large underground mines, namely, a simulated Edgar mine deployed in ROS Gazebo and a public underground mine data set provided by ETH. Experimental results show that the proposed method has higher localization accuracy and outperforms the existing LiDAR-based SLAM strategies.

Approximately since 1925, the phenomena of grinding and classification of minerals with screens have been studied. In the U.S. iron ore mining operations located in the so-called “Mesabi Iron range,” magnetite processing plants have made progress in the application of high-frequency screens that have allowed them to process low-grade Taconite ores and successfully achieve the economic benefit of these minerals. In the particular case of magnetite minerals disseminated in the siliceous matrix, the main objective is to reduce the generation of particles called “middlings” with high silica contents. Commonly the primary challenge of the metallurgical task is to achieve high recoveries and iron concentrates with low impurities. To achieve this, several studies and industrial applications have shown success in this regard and not only in iron ores, but also in other minerals around the world. The study described in this paper attempts to describe some key aspects that helped develop an effective solution and list the benefits associated with this modern process design by using industry-proven technologies for minerals in Chile that have similar characteristics to the minerals of the iron belt in the United States.

Coalbed methane development is an important way to effectively realize a source of clean energy and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases. However, due to the low permeability of coal seams, the development of coalbed methane in China has encountered substantial barriers. Protective layer mining can efficiently minimize in situ stress and increase coal seam permeability, thus improving gas drainage and avoiding gas disasters. This study analyzed the characteristics of gas migration and the change in permeability during the in situ stress releasing process through experiments and numerical simulation to study the gas drainage effect of a coal mine in an unloaded coal seam under specific geological conditions. First, a stress–strain-seepage coupled test of coal was carried out, and the evolution features of coal permeability during stress loading and unloading processes were investigated. Second, experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model of coal seepage under mining unloading conditions. Finally, a numerical model was developed based on the real geological conditions of the Wulan coal mine to explore the characteristics of in situ stress release and permeability evolution, as well as the gas drainage process in an unloaded coal seam. By combining protective layer mining and gas drainage technology, the risk of gas outburst is significantly reduced.

Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). In eastern and interior coalfields, material used is often mine refuse or flyash, both being undesirable on the surface and costly to dispose of in an environmentally acceptable manner. The Floorgas and Roofgas simulation programs are used to identify strata relaxation zones and their boundaries, to assess active gas sources from coal seams and gas¬bearing rocks and to determine relevant gassiness prediction coefficients for any local longwall. The paper shows that by use of the print-outs from the Floorgas and Roofgas programs the following benefits are achievable: • identification of the shear and gas discharge zone positions in the floor, strata relaxation angles and various gas discharge zone positions in the roof, which are both relevant to local geological and mining conditions • optimisation of cross-measure drainage hole length, location, number and angle of inclination calculation and definition of gas make prediction coefficients such as the release ratio from adjacent coal seams, specific gas emission during longwall extraction and the relationships between gas make, longwall width and coal production levels.

Falconbridge is a major basemetal producer in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario, Canada. The company identified a need to find a safe and cost-effective replacement for the welded wire mesh used to support loose ground during underground nickel mining. Falconbridge took a methodical approach to the concept of a spray-on liner as a screen replacement, proving the strength characteristics of the liner as a safe, cost effective and suitable method of supporting ground Compact, hydraulic mixing and spraying equipment were developed and are now in use at the Fraser Mine. Tekflex has been approved as a wire mesh replacement and has been in use since November 1998.

Belle Ayr Mine was established in 1972 as the first large surface coal mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. During the mid-1980s, it was eventually out-distanced in productivity by newer mines, and management recognized that the mine must recapitalize its major mining equipment and enhance its workforce flexibility in order to be competitive in the deteriorating market situation. Therefore, state-of-the-art haulage and loading equipment was placed into service, and a 12-hour rotating shift and a technician-based workforce was implemented. Belle Ayr Mine is located 29 km (18 miles) southeast of Gillette, Wyoming, in Campbell County (Figure 1). The mine is a part of AMAX Coal West, Inc., and with its sister mine, Eagle Butte, located 8 km (5 miles) north of Gillette, is a major contributor to the overall coal production of AMAX Coal Industries, Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas. This paper addresses mine planning, recapitalization initiatives, and innovative workforce changes which propelled this large, surface coal mine to the forefront of productivity in the ever tightening low sulphur coal market.

"The adsorption of mixed cationic/anionic surfactants with different molar ratios onto quartz was investigated. The cationic surfactant used was dodecylamine bromide (DDA), and the anionic surfactant was sodium oleate (NaOL). The critical micelle concentration values for the individual surfactants and their corresponding mixtures were determined using a platinum plate. The adsorption mechanisms of mixed surfactants on quartz were studied using contact angle measurements, flotation tests and adsorption amount measurements. At alkaline condition, NaOL depresses DDA flotation of quartz without depressing the adsorption of DDA. The molar ratio of mixed surfactants is found to be a key factor in the orientation of alkyl chains and thereby the flotation response of quartz. A mixture of 1/2 or 1/3 DDA/NaOL forms on the surface of quartz when the concentration of NaOL is higher than that of DDA. The adsorption of the mixture decreases the wetting of quartz since the alkyl chains are in chaotically orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. These results provide important insights into the adsorption of mixed surfactants onto quartz surface. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is known as an effective method of separating mineral particles on the basis of their surface chemistry, specifically their hydrophobicity. [1]. The hydrophobic particles will attach to the bubbles and rise to the top of the containing vessel to form a froth that flows over the lip of the vessel. The hydrophilic particles remain in the liquid [2]. In the process, surfactant is often used as collectors for surface modification in order to change the wetting properties of mineral particles. The primary long chain alkyl ammonium salts are the most widely used as collectors for the flotation of oxide minerals, such as quartz, muscovite, hematite, phosphate and feldspar [3, 4]. Adsorption mechanism of alkyl ammonium salts on oxide minerals has been extensively analyzed [5, 6]. Generally, the ammonium salts are adsorbed through electrostatic interaction of the polar group of the molecules with the surface of these minerals [7]. Despite many obvious advantages of the ammonium salts in low temperature resistance and hard water resisting, however, their unavoidable drawbacks, such as high sensitivity and poor selectivity for slimes, relatively high cost, have limited their applications [8]. In recent years, mixed surfactants have drawn much attention due to their superior physicochemical and surface properties than single surfactants [1, 9-11]. They have been used in many industrial processes such as dispersion/flocculation, flotation, detergent, corrosion inhibition, cosmetics, foods, paints, chemical mechanical polishing, enhanced oil recovery, and nanolithography [12]. Most of the mixed surfactants have synergistic advantage in reduction of the surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC); therefore, they exhibit spurious properties, like excellent surface/interfacial activities, and are less expensive than single mixed surfactant systems [13, 14]."

A multiyear program involving online, in-vessel exposures at Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI) has provided information and experience about the materials and designs for brickwork linings in pressure oxidation autoclaves. A variety of brick and mortar products was evaluated. Properties before and after exposure were used to document the performance. Some benefits include the development of a new silicate mortar, a better understanding of brick requirements and increased autoclave operating time between maintenance shutdowns. BGMI operates six pressure oxidation autoclaves at its Eureka County, NV gold operation. These autoclave process 15.8 k/ld (17,500 stpd) of gold ore. Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the six autoclave circuits. The gold ore is refractory, in which the gold particles are mineralogically encapsulated on a micro- and submicroscopic level. The autoclaves are 4.4- m- (14-ft-) diam and 26 m (85 ft) long (tip-to-tip). Inside of each is a full brickwork (brick plus mortar) lining that divides the vessel into five compartments. Each compartment has a motor-driven agitator that keeps the slurry suspended and disperses the oxygen to enhance reaction. During autoclave operation, the conditions are steady state at 210° to 232° C (410° to 450° F) and 61 to 62 kPa (420-430 psi). As shown in Fig. 1, there are other accessory vessels (splash and flash towers) in the autoclave circuits that are also brickwork-lined. The linings used to date, other than small test sections, have all been acid-resistant fireclay bricks, bonded with alkali silicate mortar, PbO- based mortar and/or vinyl ester mortar, but mainly alkali silicate mortar.
