"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

Gold-copper alloys are shown to form during the cementation of gold on copper in a solution containing 0.25M [S2O32-] at 25oC. The alloy composition is strongly dependent on the initial Cu:Au ratio in solution and ranges from Au3Cu to AuCu3. XPS results for Au, Cu, S, and O are reported as a function of depth through an entire deposited film with an initial solution containing 20 ppm [Au] and 30 ppm [Cu]. The deposit contained about 20 atomic % gold and was predominantly Cu3Au. Underpotential deposition (UPD) theory is discussed as a mechanism for explaining the formation of these alloys. Several other systems that produce alloys during contact reduction/cementation are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of lignite char for producing carbon disulfide; CS2 production rates were as high as when wood charcoal was used as raw material. The maximum space velocity for CS2 produced in the bench-scale study was 9,280 hour-1, reacting sulfur and lignite char at 792° C. The reaction temperature and the temperature at which the char was carbonized were the two most important factors in determining CS2 production rates. Increasing the carbonization temperature in nitrogen from 400° to 900° C advanced the temperature at which carbon disulfide was first produced from 550° to 850° C. The average activation energy for reacting chars with sulfur was 44,000 cal/g mole. The reaction was first order with respect to the partial pressure of sulfur. Increasing the rate of sulfur admission caused a decrease in rate of production at otherwise similar conditions. Rates were not affected by either char size or sodium carbonate catalysis. High space velocities at moderate temperatures using inexpensive lignite chars could offer an economic advantage in the manufacture of carbon disulfide provided that yields were attractive.

Conditional simulation provides a model of the ore body that represents variability in the data. This can be used to determine the impact of various grade control and mining strategies. A number of transfer functions are discussed that assist in optimizing grade control sampling. The cost effectiveness of various drilling and trenching techniques are discussed. Modelling of the expected performance of a mill head grade sampler is investigated. Conclusions are drawn about the likely impact of various sampling techniques on the economic performance of an operation and about applying sampling theory to grade control sampling.

Mixed cobalt-nickel sulphides precipitated from ammoniacal process liquors derived from nickel sulphide concentrates, mattes, and reduced nickeliferous laterites have been characterized.The mixed sulphides are prone to oxidation on standing and are rapidly leached under relatively mild conditions. The kinetics of the leaching reactions are controlled principally by temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Although the samples have different CO:Ni ratios and have undergone varying degrees of oxidation, there is little difference in their leaching behaviour. The results suggest that a single plant would be able to process mixed sulphides of varying composition. Any copper and zinc present in the mixed sulphides as impurities also go into solution and must be removed prior to recovery of the cobalt and nickel in metallic form.

The subject of haulage and heisting hazards is one that merits the attention of everyone engaged in mining. The purpose of this circular is to the importance of such hazards as are shown by Bureau of Mines accident figures, to give some examples of recent accidents and briefly analyze the immediate contributing causes, and to discuss some general means found by metal- and coal-mining companies to minimize those hazards. Haulage and hoisting accidents collectively constitute the second most common cause of accidents in and about coal mines and the third most common cause in and about metal mines. In both these types of mines falls of ground cause more accidents than haulage, and in metal mines falls of persons in raises and similar openings also exceed haulage accidents in number.

Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is continuously engaged in reduction of energy consumption at SAIL plants by implementing innovative and new concepts. In this regard, continuous efforts are being made to recover waste heat in Sinter Plants. This paper discusses existing waste heat recovery measures taken and proposed measures planned in Sinter Plants. One such effort is on waste heat recovery from sinter coolers. Hot sinter is discharged to the crusher at the end of the sinter machine at a temperature of 500 to 800°C. Temperature of hot sinter is brought down to nearly 100°C in the sinter cooler with air-cooling. The air after cooling the sinter is generally discharged to the atmosphere at about 225 to 300°C. It is planned to recover heat from the hot air that is being released to atmosphere and heat the process water, which is being added at ambient temperature in mixing drum at Bhilai Steel Plant. The temperature of raw sinter mix will be raised by addition of this hot water, which will help in improving the productivity of sinter machine. It is estimated that Waste heat recovery to the tune of 1.5 to 2.0 Gcal/h is possible with reduction in CO2 emissions in the range of 4000 to 5000 ton/year. The novel approach that is being adopted is addition of hot water in mixing drum for higher sinter productivity for the first time in India. Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. Strategies and achievements in the Asian steel industry to construct industrial ecological chain are reviewed largely in the case of Japan, Korea and China. Emphasis is placed on the development of resource circulatory system for the minimisation of various wastes and emissions of green house gases (GHG), toxic gases and polluting particulates. The minimisation includes:Rationalisation of iron and steelmaking processes; Implementation of available relevant measures/technologies; Life cycle assessment in designing steel from semis to assembled products; Reduction, reuse and recycling of materials and energies; and Utilisation of core competence technologies to process domestic and industrial wastes. In view of global nature of the above wastes- and emission-issues, inter-industrial linkage and international cooperation across the borders in the Asian countries have become more important. Inter-industrial linkage definitely serves to cut back the wastes and emissions. Examples of such linkage and factors influencing the sustainability of the linkage are described with expectation for further development of the linkage. Importance of international cooperation cannot be overstressed under the circumstances where steel production in China exceeded 220 Mt and world production exceeded 945 Mt in 2003 and is still increasing. Practical measures are discussed to enhance the linkage and cooperation for effectively promoting the reduction, reuse and recycling, including implications for the nonferrous industry.

This paper is the fourth of a series of preliminary papers on smelting in the lead blast furnace.4 The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation and to correlate these conditions with operating factors, furnace behavior, and metallurgical losses. South African discard coal fines and K₂CO₃ blends were heated in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln to produce ashes for H₂SO₄ leaching tests. The optimized H₂SO₄ leaching conditions of 6.12 mol.dm³ (M) H₂SO₄, solid to liquid ratios 1:5 and 1:10, and 80°C for 8 hours were used. K₂CO₃ was added to increase the dissolution efficiency of K. The objective was to determine if the Al present in metakaolinite (Al₂O₃.2SiO₂), the Al, K, and Ti in the alumino-silicate glasses, and the Ti in rutile (TiO₂) in the ashes could be selectively dissolved in H₂SO₄. XRF results show that the ashes formed at 700°C dissolved more efficiently (87% Al, 89% K and 23% Ti) compared to the ashes formed at 1050°C. This can be attributed to the presence of Al₂O₃.2SiO₂, K₂CO₃ melt, K₂CO₃ remnants, KAl(SO₄)₂, and K-aluminosilicate glass in these ashes. XRD results indicate that the ashes prepared at 1050°C contained anorthite (CaAl₂Si₂O₈), microcline (KAlSi₃O₈), pseudomullite (Al₂O₃.SiO₂), and silicon spinel (2Al₂O₃.3SiO₂), which are either insoluble or only sparingly soluble in H₂SO₄. These minerals resulted in the lower dissolution efficiencies of Al and K. Based on the high dissolution efficiencies of Al and K for the ashes produced at 700°C, coal fines blended with K₂CO₃ could possibly be utilized as feedstocks for the production of aluminium(III), potassium(I), and titanium(IV) and a sulphate-containing leach liquor. Furthermore, the environmental issues and costs associated with the handling and disposal of large volumes of coal fines will also be resolved.

The dynamic response of holdup in a continuous ball mill has a direct influence on the rate function of grinding kinetics and is useful for predicting the variation in the size distribution of the finished product with time.A model was proposed involving three interacting, completely mixed chambers and this was used to derive analytically the transfer function of the system, from which the unit impulse response and the unit step response of the holdup with feed rate were obtained.The theory was confirmed by comparing it with previously published experimental data for the residence time distribution of particles passing through a ball mill.

There are two kinds of problems concerning the elements of a population : the first is to estimate the proportion of some specific kind of element in the population, e.g. the amount of gold in a block of ground (equals population) or the proportion of mercury in a sample; the second is to estimate the length, breadth, volume, etc., of a specific kind of element, e.g. the grain size of quartz grains in a beach sand or the size, shape and arrangement of lenses of ore in an ore deposit. Given a specific objective, a bounded population, identified elements and the element characteristics of interest, it is then necessary to select a sample of the elements from the population and the problem of sampling requires a decision on how to select the sample. It is also necessary to establish, either by heuristic analysis or empirically, based on long experience, the model frequency distribution of the desired element characteristics: in general, constant-probability models are used as models, the binomial or Poisson for count data and the normal distribution for measurements (or their transformed equivalents). The objective of sampling then becomes to obtain an appropriate statistical estimate of the desired population parameter: for example, the estimators may be the mean (X) and variance (a2): these should be unbiased sufficient estimators of their corresponding parameters (u, a2, respectively). Statistical tests are performed in order to determine that the estimators are of the appropriate kind: all statistical tests are designed to test against bias of a specific kind, although they are stated as tests against randomness. Given a random sample of some population, the estimators are usually stable and adequate to solve the sampling problem. Random samples are simple to define but exceedingly difficult to achieve in practice: in selecting a sample, if every element in the population has an equal chance of occurring, then the sample is a random sample. Interaction between the arrangement of elements in a population, i.e. its structure, and the sample selection process frequently introduces bias—that is, some elements have more chance than others of appearing in the sample and, hence, the sample is not random. An algorithm for dealing pragmatically with this aspect of the sampling problem offers one way of achieving random samples and, therefore, adequate estimators. Examples of the use of this algorithm on various kinds of geological populations, in both field and laboratory, illustrate the requirements for solving sampling problems and the achievement of appropriate estimators.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento mecânico sob flexão de um instrumento endodôntico constituído de Ni-Ti M-Wire e comparar suas respostas com aquelas obtidas de um instrumento de Ni-Ti superelástico convencional com a mesma geometria, utilizando-se simulação por elementos finitos. Um instrumento ProTaper Universal F1 foi selecionado para este estudo. O modelo geométrico para a simulação numérica foi gerado através de micro-tomografia computadorizada e os dados para os modelos constitutivos foram obtidos por meio de ensaios de tração realizados em laboratório. A simulação numérica foi realizada em ABAQUS, com condições de contorno baseadas na especificação ISO 3630-1. Os resultados mostram que instrumentos de Ni-Ti M-Wire apresentam maior flexibilidade e menores valores de tensão quando submetidos à flexão, o que indica que estes instrumentos são mais resistentes à fadiga por flexão.

ALL mine ore here must be concentrated before shipment, which involves selective flotation. Three products are made: lead, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. The equipment and practice are so well outlined in the accompanying flow sheet that only a few amplifying remarks are necessary. After crushing at the mine to approximately 4 in., the ore is carried by aerial tram about 4 1/2, mi. to the mill. From 1800 to 2000 metric tons per day, excluding Sundays, is thus transported. At the mill, the buckets are hand-tipped into the bins. After crushing to pass a ¼ -in. square opening, the ore may be stored in reserve crushed-ore bins or ball-mill feed bins as desired. Total bin capacity at the mill is about 4000 metric tons. The concentrator is arranged in three independent grinding sections, each fed from its own storage bin. Grinding operations follow standard practice, with ball mills in single-stage closed circuit with classifiers, the overflow from which is delivered to the lead circuit rougher flotation machines,

Early experiences The first double shield hard rock tunnel boring machine, manufactured in 1973, belonged to the generation of machines that were equipped with 12" dia. cutters. The experiences made with the 4.3 m diameter prototype ROBBINS mod 144-151 have been reported at the 1976 R.E.T.C. of Las Vegas (1): it might be worth recalling here that, with a specific cutter load not exceeding 10 to 12 metric ton and a 4.8 r.p.m. cutterhead speed, the average advance rate was of 350 meters per month of 21 working days with a peak production of 1,050 m of advance in 40 working days, in widely weathered and fractured granitic rocks of generally precarious stability, where a precast segmental lining was routinely installed as tunnel support. Over the 8.2 km of the Sila Tunnels, several badly crushed or sheared rock zones were bored through without major problems, even with water inflows of up to 30 1/sec. The same machine, with an improved design of the telescopic-and-floating shield area and equipped with flameproof drive motors, was taken to Colombia where, from September, 1979 to March, 1982 it drove 7.5 km of the Rio Negro-Chivor Tunnel in competent siliceous shales of up to 130 MPa at an average rate of 20 m/day.

When you think of the state of Maine, you probably think of lobsters or lighthouses. The last thing you would think of is metallic mineral mining, and that is for good reason. According to the Maine Geological Survey?s website, ?no metals have been mined in Maine since 1977.? Moreover, Maine?s metallic mineral mining laws and rules, which were last rewritten in 1991, have effectively made mining in the Pine Tree State impossible. Statutory changes enacted in 2012, however, put Maine on a path to make metallic mineral mining part of the local economy in the near future. History of metallic mineral mining in Maine Currently, Maine is not a metallic mineral mining state, though that has not always been the case. The 1800s saw various mining operations in Maine, including what the Maine Geological Survey calls a ?mining boom? from 1879 to 1882, where mining of iron, silver, copper, lead and zinc expanded rapidly. Mining and mining activity in the more recent past, however, drove the debate before the state legislature when this issue was debated in 2012.

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the main actors related to air pollution caused by surface mining. Fugitive dust, considered as particulate matter that cannot be collected by conventional measures, is classified by the particle size. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) categorizes PM as coarse and fine particles based on the particle size being less than 10 μm (PM10) and less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5). Basic operations of surface mining such as drilling and blasting, loading, haulage, and processing are processes that can potentially generate fugitive dust. Regulations and legislations enforce the mining industry to use environmental monitoring systems, fugitive dust level measured by PM10 level as part of this. Air quality monitors are positioned at different locations around surface coal mines and track air quality levels during production. This study introduces a data-driven methodology to handle air quality issues related to fugitive dust at surface coal mines. Data is sourced from different mine equipment in real-time and they are integrated with air quality monitoring systems to provide information to support decisions for fugitive dust. The method is implemented and demonstrated in a case study at a large surface coal mine.
