A technique was developed for depositing single -crystal films of silicon on single-crystal sapphire substrates via the pyrolytic decomposition of SiH4/H2 mixtures. Electron diffraction and X-ray Laue reflection examinations of these films revealed single-crystal patterns. These films were characterized by measuring conductivity type, thickness, resistivity, and Hall mobility. Chemical etching, dislocation staining, and electron-microscopy examination have indicated the presence of low-angle grain boundaries and microtwinning in the silicon films. The role of the sapphire substrate with respect to its quality, orientation, surface finish, and thermal and chemical treatment was investigated. Hall mobility as a function of sapphire orientation was measured. A mobility equal to 88 pct of bulk silicon mobility was attained. Insulated-gate field-effect transistors which have a transconductance of 4000 pmho at 6 ma were fabricated using these films. THE technology of the fabrication of microelectronic circuits with active and passive components directly on a single wafer of semiconductor material has attained a high degree of perfection during the last few years. One inherent difficulty with the single-wafer approach has been undesirable coupling between components arising from the common base material. Several techniques have been developed for minimizing this coupling and obtaining good electrical isolation between components; however, these result in extra capacitance being added to the circuit. The extraneous capacitance of the connecting leads, resistors, and capacitors degrade circuit performance and limit the high-frequency operation of these circuits. Recently there has been considerable interestl-3 in the deposition of silicon films upon insulating substrates. The use of silicon as the semiconductor allows the subsequent utilization of the large amount of technology which has been developed for silicon for the fabrication of good active components. A sapphire substrate supplies an excellent insulating material which at the same time gives a thermal-conductivity improvement of an order of magnitude over glass-type substrates. This paper will describe the results obtained for the deposition of single-crystal silicon layers upon single-crystal sapphire substrates as well as the characterization of these films. I) APPARATUS The 'system used for the growth of silicon films on sapphire substrates by means of the pyrolysis of SiH4/H2 mixtures is shown in Fig. 1. The all-quartz reaction chamber is water-cooled and includes a quartz optical-flat window for use in conjunction with a 5 kw, 2.5 Mc per sec constant-temperature controlled rf generator. The temperature sensor for the rf generator is a thermopile which is focused through the quartz optical flat onto the susceptor surface. With this system the rf generator will hold the temperature of the susceptor to about +0.3°C at 1200°C. The susceptor is supported on a quartz sled inclined to the gas flow to increase the uniformity of the deposition. The water jacket surrounding the reaction chamber is used to keep the quartz wall temperature low enough to limit the decomposition of the silane to the rf-heated susceptor which contains the sapphire substrates. This eliminates the reaction of silicon with the hot quartz to form SiO which deposits out on the apparatus walls, thus obscuring vision, and interferes with the optical measurements of the temperature as well as with the growth process itself. Provision is also made for "n"- and 'p"-type doping by using mixtures of either phosphine or diborane in hydrogen which are added to the silane during the growth process. The hydrogen used is the purest commercially available tank hydrogen further purified by use of a palladium diffuser. The susceptors which were used include 1) spectro-scopically pure graphite, 2) high-purity molybdenum, 3) high-resistivity silicon using a low-resistivity insert to facilitate coupling to the rf generator, 4) silicon carbide-coated graphite. The latter two susceptor materials produced silicon films on sapphire substrates with more reproducible resistivities. Prior to silicon deposition all connecting lines as well as the reaction chamber are thoroughly flushed with argon and then hydrogen. After the hydrogen flow is set, the growth temperature is adjusted to 11009 to 1150°C, and when thermal equilibrium is reached the silane flow is started. The flow rate of the hydrogen must be fast enough so that turbulent flow occurs in the size of reaction tube used, otherwise a streaked nonuniform silicon deposit occurs. After the deposition

Drag coefficients for a cylinder being towed through water at constant velocity and also at constant linear acceleration were measured. Drag coefficients for constant velocity towing showed reasonable agreement with previous results. The drag coefficients found for constant acceleration showed little correlation with either the magnitude of the acceleration or the value of the modulus AD/V2 and tended to be slightly lower than those for constant velocity. INTRODUCTION For the design of offshore structures, wave forces acting on immersed cylinders are of importance. Several investigations have been made of these forces and of how they can be predicted from wave theories. A paper by Crooke' summarizes much of the work already done. More recent research by the Wave Research Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, has added much to the body of data collected under ocean wave conditions, but has not found a reliable method of force prediction from basic theories of wave motion. The present investigation is part of a long-range program to collect data with which to test current and future theories and correlations. The immediate objective was to measure drag forces on a circular cylinder subjected to linear accelerations over the range of Reynolds numbers between l04 and 105 where the drag coefficient was a constant for constant velocities. In particular, the effect of constant acceleration from rest and from uniform motion was to be investigated. The effect of acceleration may be evaluated in terms of drag coefficients. A useful resistance coefficient, C, is defined by the equation for total drag force, D, exerted by the fluid on the cylinder. DT =CSp V2/2.........(1) The coefficient C may be plotted as a function of the parameter AD/V2. Here D is the diameter and S is the projected area of the cylinder. The acceleration and velocity are A and V. The mass density of the fluid is p. An alternate drag coefficient, C, corresponds to the total force of the fluid opposing the motion minus the virtual mass force. This drag coefficient, arising from the velocity of the fluid, may be compared with that for the same cylinder in uniform motion. The similarities and differences between this coefficient as calculated for accelerated and for steady motion are of interest in the inverse process of predicting drag forces on cylinders under arbitrary conditions. One serious difficulty in this method is the specification of the virtual mass which depends also on the flow picture about the cylinder.1 EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT The experiment was performed in the combination wave and towing tank at the Engineering Field Station of the University of California. The tank is 200 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 6 ft deep. The tow carriage is externally propelled by a cable, and the velocity of the carriage is maintained essentially constant by means of an am-plidyne. For the purpose of the present investigation, the speed control of the amplidyne was modified by inserting a linear speed control rheostat, which was rotated at a constant speed by a small d-c motor equipped with a slip-clutch. Accelerations which were constant over a reasonable length of time were thus produced. The magnitude of the acceleration depended upon the speed of the d-c motor and the limiting speed of the carriage. Data were obtained for a range of accelerations of 2 to 10 ft/sec,2 and a range of velocities of 2 to 15 ft/sec. An accelerometer (Statham Type C-2-350) with a range of ±2g was attached to the carriage and connected to a Brush analyzer and penmotor. A continuous coil of wire with 10 turns/ft wound around a fixed wooden form extending for a distance of 40 ft along the length of the tank was connected by an electrical contact mounted on the carriage to a Brush analyzer and penmotor, to give the time-position history for each run. Using residual activity technique, the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in alunzinum has been studied in the temperature range of 400" to 630°C. The diffusivities (in units of square centimeters per second) have been expressed as: IMPURITY diffusion in aluminum,1-9 silverand lead5 for cases of low solid solubility of the impurity in the host metal has yielded frequency factors in the range of l0-6 to l0-9 sq cm per sec whereas the activation energy is practically half the self-diffusion activation energy value. From the observed values of frequency factor, activation energy, and entropy of activation, it has been suggested' that these solutes are not diffusing by vacancy or interstitial mechanisms but by a mechanism which should be consistent with such low values of the diffusion parameters (Do and Q). However in spite of extensive work on these types of systems, the mechanism of diffusion is still not well understood. The present investigation on the diffusion of palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, and tin in aluminum has been carried out to throw further light on the diffusion mechanism in systems, where the solid solubility is very low (except for the case of silver). The results are discussed on the basis of solid solubility and the structural changes involved owing to the presence of the solutes in aluminum solid solution. An attempt has also been made to apply the existing theories of charge5-8 and size8 difference between the solute and the solvent. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens (1/2 in. diam by 3/8 in. high) were machined out of pure aluminum (99.995 wt pct) rod obtained from Johnson Mattheys. They were sealed under vacuum in quartz tubes and annealed at 620° C for several hours; the grains thus developed were sufficiently large to eliminate the possibility of diffusion along the grain boundaries. The flat ends were prepared carefully after polishing as described previously,10 Radioactive nitrates of cadmium, indium, and tin and chloride of palladium containing, respectively, cd115, 1n114, sn113, and pd103 were dissolved in distilled water and mixed with 30 pct acetone. By means of a micropipet a drop of this solution was placed on a smoothly polished and lightly etched surface of the specimen. Due care was taken to see that the solution spread uniformly on the surface of specimen without trickling down its sides. Radioactive silver was elec-trodeposited using a AgCN-KCN bath. The amount of sample deposited in all the cases was not more than 0.1 µ thick. The samples were then sealed in quartz tubes in vacuum. The cadmium samples were sealed in a purified argon atmosphere to avoid evaporation. The samples were then diffusion-annealed. The temperature of annealing varied between 400° and 630°C and was controlled to ±5°C. On heating to -400°C,the deposits of cadmium, indium, and tin, which were of the order of 0.1 p in thickness, were converted to their respective oxides. The contribution of oxygen present in the lattice of aluminum due to these oxides has been calculated and found to be less than 10 ppm in all cases. Oxide method has already been used by other workers11'12 in diffusion studies without any controversy on the issue. However, in some of these investigations, metallic deposition was also tried. The diffusivities calculated from these measurements were found to agree very well with the diffusivities obtained by using the oxide method. Thus it is assumed that the measured diffusivities represent true diffusion coefficients. Since palladous chloride decomposes at about 500°C, the deposited samples which were to be diffusion-annealed below 500°C were heated in vacuum for a very short time at 500°C to allow the decomposition of palladous chloride to palladium metal. Time taken in decomposition of nitrates to oxides and chloride to metal was negligibly small as compared to the period of the diffusion anneals. The residual activity technique13 was used to study the diffusion profiles where thin layers from the specimen surface were removed by grinding it parallel to a flat surface on a 600-grade carborundum paper. The specimen was washed, dried, and weighed, the differ -ence of the weight being the measure of the thickness of the layer removed. After each such abrasion and weighing, the total residual activity on the surface of the specimens was measured by counting 0.656, 0.94,

Tonejc The present communication is concerned with the variation of the texture in aluminum wires with die angle and temperature, at constant speed of extrusion. Experiments were carried out concurrently on refined samples, with a stated purity of 99.997 pct pure A1 and commercial samples of 99.5 pct Al. Ingots of refined aluminum samples were machined to 30-mm-diam by 150-mm-long billets. These billets were transformed to 5-mm-diam wires by drawing. The final form, suitable for examination, was obtained by extrusion through conical-face dies with a 1-mm hole diam and extrusion ratio 5:l in diam. The initial form of the commercial aluminum samples was drawn wire 5 mm in diam. These samples showed a poorly defined texture with (111) as a major and (001) as a minor component. A similar defined texture appeared in the refined aluminum samples after drawing to 5 mm diam. Conical-face dies with different angles (defined by the axis and the generating line of the cone) were used in our experiments. The values of the angles were 27, 35, 45, 57, 63, and 90 deg. The extrusion container was fitted with a heating element and controller permitting temperatures up to 600°C to be maintained within i5"C. Extrusion was performed at 250°, 300°, 350°, 400°, and 500°C at constant speed (approximately 1 mm per sec) and constant die reduction. The extrusion product was a wire 1 mm in diam and approximately 20 cm long. In order to remove the surface layer with the "conical" texture and to reduce the absorption by the X-ray examination of the samples, the extruded wire was etched to 0.22 mm in diam. Experiments were performed in the middle sections of the 20-cm-long wires. In addition to the die of l-mm hole diam, dies with a 1.5-, 0.7-, 0.6-, 0.5-, and 0.4-mm hole diam and 63-deg die angle were constructed. In our experiments we did not find in these ranges any important difference concerning the texture of the extruded wires and we continued our work solely on the 1.0-mm die. The diffracted X-rays (Cu K radiation) were recorded photographically. Diffracted intensities were measured on the (111) reflection with a microphotometer. The relative amounts of texture components were determined from the areas under the diffracted maxima. We found the texture of extruded aluminum wires to be strongly influenced not only by the temperature of extrusion and the purity of the sample but also by the form of the die. It is generally admitted that cold-drawn aluminum wires have mainly a (111) texture with a small amount of (001) component, Table I of Ref. 1. In our experiments with wires extruded in conditions represented by Fig. 1, in some cases a single (001) texture was obtained. If these wires were drawn repeatedly at room temperature, X-ray measurements revealed a duplex (001)-(111) fiber texture. Further drawings increased the (111) and decreased the (001) texture component. In Fig. 1 the percentage of material oriented with (001) parallel to the extrusion direction is represented as a function of the temperature and the die angle (a), for commercial and refined aluminum samples, respectively. From these diagrams we may draw the following conclusions. The slope of the die (a) influenced more strongly the texture at the lower rather than the higher temperatures. Again, a stronger influence was found in the case of the commercial in comparison with refined aluminum samples. In the case of the commercial aluminum samples the amount of material with (001) texture increases with increasing wire temperature in an approximately linear manner. This effect is less pronounced in the pure aluminum samples, with the exception of the die with a = 45 deg. In this case the (001) texture decreases with increasing temperature, as shown in Fig. 1. Component (001) is more pronounced in higher-purity aluminum samples. Our experiments led to the conclusion that both (001) and (111) components are essentially stable in extruded aluminum wires. As we obtained a single (001) texture starting with a sample of drawn wire in which the (001) component was very weak, our experiments revealed that the (001) component is not a remnant of the initial texture; this is in disagreement with the findings of Vandermeer and McHargue.1 We gratefully acknowledge discussions with Professor M. The diffusion rate in Ag-Sb couples is sensitive to con~pressive load with the width of Ag3Sb, the only phase present in the diffusion zone, increasing with stress up to 800 psi and remaining constant above this. Kirkendall marker experiments show silver to diffuse much faster than antimony in Ag3Sb and incipient porosity may therefore develop at the Ag/Ag3Sb interfnce restricting the transfer of atoms from the silver into the diflusion zone. Application of compressive stress reduces the tendency for porosity to develop and so increases the growth rate. In a recent paper Brown et al.1 observed a significant increase in the thickness of Cu2Te in Cu-Te diffusion couples on application of a compressive stress as low as 20 psi. Similar stress effects have also been observed in the Fe-A1,2 Al-u,3 arid cu-sb4,5 systems. It has been suggested that the increase in growth rates of intermetallic phases in these systems is due to a decrease in the amount of Kirkendall porosity with applied stress. In the present paper, results are presented of the effect of compressive stress on diffusion in Ag-Sb, together with a detailed examination of the Kirkendall effect. The Ag-Sb phase diagram6 shows that antimony has a moderate degree of solid solubility in silver, 5.7 at. pct at 350°C, but that there is essentially no solubility of silver in antimony. There are two intermediate phases— (hcp7) from 8.8 to 15.7 at. pct Sb and Ag3Sb (orthorhombic8) from 21.8 to 25.9 at. pct Sb. EXPERIMENTAL Diffusion couples were prepared from fine silver of 99.95 pct purity and from antimony of 99.7 pct purity. Both the silver and antimony were produced in the form of discs 1/2 in. in diam by approximately $ in. thick, with surfaces ground flat to 3/0 emery paper. Diffusion anneals were carried out in the apparatus previously described.1 A compressive load was applied to the diffusion couple through a lever arm system, with a reproducibility estimated to be ±10 psi. All runs were carried out in a protective hydrogen atmosphere. Following the diffusion anneal specimens were sectioned and polished and the width of the diffusion zone was measured metallographically. Composition profiles were measured using an electrostatically focused electron probe with a spot size of 10 , counting on Sb L radiation. Corrections for matrix absorptiori and fluorescent enhancement9 were not required. S. K. IMD RESULTS Fig. 1 shows an electron probe traverse of a typical diffusion zone. In all couples examined only one intermediate phase was observed and the composition of this phase, 23 wt pct Sb, was in good agreement with the composition of Ag3Sb, 23 to 28 wt pct Sb. The presence of this phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction of filings taken from the diffusion zone. The probe traverses showed no detectable solid solubility in either the silver or the antimony although the phase diagram indicates that some antimony, up to 6.5 wt pct pct Sb, should be in solid solution in the silver. However the width of this portion of the diffusion zone would be expected to be very small in view of the low diffusion coefficient in the silver, 4 x 10-l6 sq cm per sec at 350°C, 10 compared with that in the Ag,Sb, estimated as 3 x 10-8 sq cm per sec in the present work, and this region would therefore not be expected to be seen in the probe traverse. Application of stress resulted in a significant increase in the width of the diffusion zone, Fig. 2. At 350°C, the thickness of Ag3Sb increased from 250 at 0 psi to 400 p at the limiting stress of 800 psi, indicating an apparent 150 pct increase in the diffusion coefficient. Similar behavior was also observed at 400°C, indicating that the stress effect is not characteristic of just one temperature. The growth of Ag3Sb at 350°C and at various stresses is shown in Fig. 3. In every case the growth rate was parabolic indicating diffusion control. The kinetic curves all passed through the origin showing that delayed nucleation of Ag3Sb was not responsible for the stress effect and that it was a real growth effect. A series of tests were carried out in which diffusion was allowed to take place at a lower stress following an initial high stress diffusion anneal. Speci-

Experimental results are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in a iron in the temperature range 750° to 873°C and in 6 iron in the temperature range 1410° to 1470°C. It is shown that the rate controlling process is diffusion of nitrogen into the iron. The diffusiting of nitrogen in a and 6 iron is derived from the results, and the temperature dependence of the diffusivity is represented by the equation D = 7.8 x e- 18,900/RT sq cm per sec. The solubility of nitrogen in a and 6 iron, in equilibrium with 1 atm pressure of nitrogen, has been measured. Using these results and other available data, it is found that the variation of the logarithm of nitrogen solubility with the reciprocal of absolute temperature is nonlinear. In an Appendix, some results of Darken and Smith are presented for the rate of solution of nitrogen in iron using ammonia + hyidrogen mixtures. These data also support the view that diffudsion of nitrogen in iron is the rate-controlling process when ammonia + hydrogen mixtures are used. A considerable effort has been made to obtain data on the solubility1-5 and diffusivity of nitrogen in a iron6-l2 because an understanding of the effect of nitrogen on the properties of steel must be based on an accurate knowledge of the properties of nitrogen in pure iron. However, no information is available concerning the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in a and 6 iron. Recently the authors13 have investigated the rate-controlling mechanism operating in the kinetics of solution of nitrogen in y iron. This study was directed to determine the rate-controlling processes for similar reactions with a and 6 iron as well as to establish values for the solubility of nitrogen in equilibrium with nitrogen gas in a and a iron. EXPERIMENTAL The procedure used in experiments to determine the rate of solution in cylindrical iron rods was the same as that described in a previous communication.13 Ferrovac E grade iron used in all experiments contained the following impurities in weight percent: C, 0.005; Mn, 0.001; P, 0.002; S, 0.006; Si, 0.006; Ni, 0.025; Cr, 0.002; V, 0.004; W, 0.02; Mo, 0.01; Cu, 0.001; Co, 0.01; 0, 0.007. After cleaning the surface, the iron rods were treated in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen for 17 hr before the reacting gas was introduced for known experimental times. After quenching, the samples were sectioned radially and analyzed for nitrogen. In addition to experiments using rods, iron foils were used in the measurements of solution rates of nitrogen in a iron. The foils of two different thicknesses were prepared by cold rolling Ferrovac E grade iron cylindrical rod to 0.051 and 0.152 cm. Foil samples were used in a rectangular form 5 cm long and 1.25 cm wide. The specimens were thoroughly cleaned of surface oxide with fine emery cloth and degreased with carbon tetrachloride immediately before entry into the furnace. The experimental procedure was the same as that used in the study with rods. At the completion of an experiment, the foil samples of the nitrogenized iron were analyzed for nitrogen after discarding 0.3 cm from the perimeter of the specimen. Iron foils were nitrogenized and denitrogenized in the a and 6 range with a gas mixture of 95 pct N and 5 pct H for times varying from 5 min to 2 hr. Results obtained for the average composition of nitrogen in iron for these experiments are presented in Fig. 1. Prior to the denitrogenization experiments, the samples were saturated with nitrogen at 1000°C and 0.67 atm N, giving a uniform nitrogen concentration of 0.0204 pct. According to the known a-y phase boundary in the Fe-N system,14 this composition lies within the ferrite region at temperatures 750" to 850°C. Use of this initial nitrogen content insured that reaction occurred between the gas and a single solid phase, a iron. Examples of the results for the mean concentrations of nitrogen in cylindrical iron rods, 0.356 cm radius for both the a and 6 ranges are given in Fig. 2. Typical examples of the results obtained for the radial distributions of nitrogen in rods are presented in Fig. 3. It appears that the results for radial distributions can be extrapolated to constant surface compositions which agree with the equi-

PRODUCTS made from the ores of the sillimanite group, and synthetic substitutes for them, have unique properties, and service tests prove that they are playing, and will continue to play, a major part in improvements in metallurgical processes. Also, they are examples of how comparatively useless, rare, or "museum" minerals have been made available in commercial quantities. Until research developed uses for them, the minerals had been observed only in small, scattered masses, or crystals. Improvements in ceramic processes and compositions have come about very gradually. In the last 10 or 15 years, several outstanding developments have been made. Of greatest interest to the mining and metallurgical engineers are those affecting the composition, necessitating the mining of new minerals, and improvements in ceramic products used in metallurgical processes.

MANY investigations are reported in the literature on the age hardening of Al-Mg-Zn alloys but most of them are concerned mainly with mechanical property changes. The present investigation was started to determine the structural changes in an AlMgZn alloy. The alloy composition was chosen in the existing phase diagram" so as to lie on the quasi-binary section Al-(AlZn)Mg Actually, it was found that the diagram as published was inexact at the lower temperatures and that the phase in equilibrium with aluminum at the lower temperatures is not the ternary compound. Technique The alloy used for the investigation was prepared from high purity materials and the resulting composition as determined by chemical and spectro-graphic analysis was: Zn, 6.17 pct; Mg, 2.13 pct; CU, 0.03 pct; Si, 0.009 pct; Fe, 0.005 pct; and the remainder, aluminum. An ingot -in. thick was cast, homogenized, hot and cold-rolled to strip 0.064-in. thick for dilato-metric and powder work, and to foil 0.005-in. thick for single crystal work. Solution treatment temperature for all specimens was 475°±5°C for periods of at least 1 hr, either in air furnaces or lead baths. Aging was done in oil or Pb-Bi baths controlled to within ±3°C. The aging was investigated at the following temperatures: room (30°), 130°, ZOO0, 260°, and 300°C. For the dilatometric study, the length changes were measured continuously, at temperature, using strips of alloy 10 in. long, shaped as channels to eliminate undesirable deflection due to bending. To compensate for thermal expansion and contraction due to the variations in the temperature of the aging baths, the dilatometers were built of the same alloy as the one being tested, with the same shape and size, but with material fully annealed. Gages on which 0.0005 in. could be read and 0.0001 in. estimated were used to measure the dilation. Length changes were also measured at room temperature. Strips approximately 10 in. long were solution-treated, quenched, and measured in a supermicrome-ter in which 0.0001 in. could be read and 0.00001 in. estimated. The specimens were immediately aged for a given time, remeasured, and then the cycle was repeated, including the solution treatment. The error of measurement with this technique was somewhat larger, but the results confirmed those obtained by continuous measurements. The sheet used for the dilatometric work was checked to determine grain orientation. Both X-rays and etching methods revealed a rather coarse grain size but only a negligible amount of preferred orientation. Thus, volume changes calculated from length changes are not invalidated by preferential orientation effects. Pieces of the sheet used for the dilatometric work were also used for the metal -lographic work. Filings for the powder X-ray study were produced from a homogenized piece of sheet. These filings were magnetically purged of iron, screened to 200 mesh, sealed in a Pyrex tube containing an argon atmosphere, and solution-treated. When quenching, the glass tube was broken, so that the powder dropped directly into cold water. After drying with alcohol, the powder was sealed into capillary tubes containing an argon atmosphere and then aged for the required times. In spite of all these precautions the three strongest lines of a( Al2o) appeared in all patterns, and were used as internal standards. By the use of these standards, accurate corrections for film shrinkage were obtained. For the back reflection patterns, annealed nickel powder was mixed with the specimen to act as internal standard. The reduction of a metal in an aqueous solution may be defined in terms of its source of electrons. In electrolytic reduction electrons flow as a result of applied voltages. In other systems electron sources are reducing gases or metals of lower electron affinity. In the latter two cases it is increasingly evident that reduction is electro-chemical in nature in that electrons flow through one or more conducting phases even though the discharge reactions may not be rate controlling. Electrode processes impmtant in reduction and metal deposition are reviewed and extended to contact reduction by precipitation (cementation) on mme electropositive metals. Contact reduc- tion Processes are ancient in origin and represent techniques which have had successful application for hundreds of years. In spite of this, little has been understood in terms of the dynamic properties of such systems or of important side reactions. In recent years an increasing amount of laboratory work has been carried out on contact reduction and an attempt is made here to summarize the important findings. Undoubtedly the interest aroused recently may be attributed to improved reactor design which has demonstrated on a commercial basis accelerated metal recovery by taking advantage of important kinetic and chemical parameters. of gold cyanide (Au(CN)-), respectively. The most common method for the reduction of ions in solution is by electrolysis. The impure metal is made the anode and the ions are reduced at the cathode. Leach liquors containing reducible ions may similarly be reduced electrolytically using an inert anode. The latter process is referred to as electrowinning. In recent years hydrogen has been used successfully as a gaseous re-Metallurgical Society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). He was also a member of the Executive Board of the Metallurgical Society (AIME). In 1957 Dr. WADSWORTH was given the AlME Best Paper Award as coauthor of a paper on the roasting of sphalerite. On July 1, 1968 Dr. WADS-WORTH started an 24 month assignment in the Philippine Islands to assist in the development of graduate metallurgical engineering at the University of the Philippines. In addition to graduate teaching and curriculum development he will establish research programs to develop extraction processes for metals production in the islands. Low-temperature measurements of photolumines-cence were used to evaluate the progvess in materials development. Variation of the impurity type, impurity concentration, and method of growth were used to clarify the chemical origin of defects in GaAs. Melt-g~ozun, epitaxial vapor-, and solution-grown samples were studied. A comparison of measurements at 77" and 20°K shows that more defects can be observed at the lower temperature. Th'vee residual defects were identified in relatively pure GaAs. These were: silicon, copper, and a gallium vacancy-donor complex. Solution growth from a gallium solution inhibits the formation of the latter two. Eleven defects were studied and the "optical" activation energy of some of these, namely, silicon, cobalt, and chromium, has not been reported in the literature before. THE discovery of the injection laser in 1962 prompted extensive measurements of the photoluminescence of GaAs. The measurements were made at 77°K on GaAs doped with shallow impurities at various doping levels and compared with electroluminescence1'2 and absorp- tion data.374 In addition, lower-temperature studies were made on relatively pure GaAS' and on GaAs doped with oxygen,5'" manganese,' and copper.' The only previous evaluation was done at 77°K when solution-grown and melt-grown GaAs were compared.O No identification of defects was made but it was shown that some of the deep-level luminescence seen in melt-grown GaAs was absent in solution-grown GaAs. The present work extends the comparison of preparation techniques to lower temperatures and to a study of epitaxial vapor-grown GaAs. It is particularly valuable for thin epitaxial layers since they cannot be analyzed by conventional analytical techniques. In addition, by varying the impurity type and impurity concentration the chemical origin and nature of defects in GaAs was demonstrated. Eleven defects were studied in all. Three of the defects were identified as residual defects which often contaminate GaAs prepared from the melt and the vapor. Only one such defect was observed in GaAs grown from a gallium solution and this was identified as silicon.

It has been shown1 that cavities are formed in the grain-boundaries of copper and 70:30 brass (as well as in magnesium) by the application of tensile stresses at elevated temperatures. For a given rate of strain, cavities are formed in brass at a lower temperature than in copper, and they are larger; it was thought that this earlier onset of cavitation in the alloy might be caused by the distortion produced in the metal lattice by the alloying element. If the cavitation is caused by the vacancy-migration mechanism, ' the distortion of the lattice would reduce the energy required for vacancy formation, and thus provide vacancies more readily to assist in the cavitation process. It was decided to study a range of alloys to find out whether increasing amounts of an alloying element would cause any progressive increase in, or modification of, the cavitation in copper. Nickel was chosen for this purpose, since it is soluble in copper throughout the whole range of alloys. A further advantage was its low vapor pressure, which enabled the preparation of the alloys in vacuum and the consequent reduction of their hydrogen content. It has been suggested that cavities may be nucleated by the migration of hydrogen atoms to the less regular atomic spacing at the boundary, and their combination to form molecules. The latter being too large to diffuse back into the lattice, form stable cavities into which vacancies could condense. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All alloys, ranging from pure OFHC copper to 43.7 at. pct of nickel (carbonyl), were prepared in a vacuum furnace employing high-frequency induction heating. When a charge was melted, vigorous gas evolution occurred initially, after which the pressure was reduced to 10-4 mm Hg, using an oil-diffusion pump. After remaining molten for a further 1/2 to 1 hr to aid degassing, the melt was allowed to solidify in the crucible. In this way contamination by gases evolved from the surface of a separate mold was avoided. The list of alloys prepared is shown in Table I. The percentage of hydrogen present in the OFHC copper was reduced from 0.0054 at. pct to 0.0012 at. pct, as measured by a vacuum-fusion method. The alloys were cold-rolled to 0.03-in.-thick strip, and were homogenized in vacuum for 1 hr at 900°C after every 30 pct reduction. At a thickness of 0.05 in., the strip was held at 450°C for 24 hr under high vacuum (10-5 mm Hg) in an attempt to reduce the hydrogen content still further. Tensile specimens were prepared with a gage length of 1 in., and were finally annealed for 2 hr at 800°C to give an average grain diameter of 0.1 mm. TENSILE DEFORMATION The specimens were deformed in a tensile straining machine operated by a synchronous motor at a constant rate, equivalent to 1.7 pct per hr on a 1-in. gage length. The specimen and grips were contained in a vacuum jacket. A pressure of 10-2 mm Hg was maintained, which was sufficient to prevent surface tarnishing of a specimen held at 650°C for 24 hr. Tests were made between 20. and 650°C and the temperature was controlled to within ±3° over the gage length. The load was measured by the deflection of a cantilever spring. a) Mechanical Properties-The ductility curves shown in Fig. 1 fall into two groups. Figs. 1(a) and (b) for copper and the 5 pct nickel alloy, respectively, show a continuous fall in ductility with a steep fall between 200° and 400°C. Figs. l(c) to (f) show the same sudden loss of ductility between 200° and 400°C. With higher temperatures, however, there is a recovery in ductility values to a maxi-

This paper discusses some fundamental metallurgical principles involved in production of sound cast bronze. In a previous paper the writers advanced the theory that "oxidation" in bronze castings is due to incipient shrinkage, and showed the effect of reducing melting atmospheres.' In the present paper the effects of certain impurities and of actual oxidizing conditions are shown. The appendix deals with the appearance of various inclusions. For many years the prevailing opinion has been that unsoundness, dark colored fractures and other phenomena accompanying porosity and weakness in bronzes are due to oxidation. The actual troubles are caused by fissures of intercrystalline type, which are often mistaken for intercrystalline films. These weaken the metal and make it porous. Grave doubt regarding the accuracy of the oxidation theory appears when several research papers presented within the last 10 years are reviewed critically. In 1919, Comstock2 conducted metallographic researches, attempting to identify "oxides" in synthetically prepared metals. He found that oxides of tin, aluminum, zinc, etc. are different from the intercrystalline films (or cavities) to which porosity is due. Apparently he believed that these "oxide films" may be caused by volatile oxides of zinc or of phosphorus or by dissolved gases thrown out of solution during solidification of the metal. In 1923, Woyski and Boeck3 definitely questioned the accuracy of the oxidation theory and indicated the danger from reducing atmospheres. They say that "oxidation, gassing and shrinkage may produce effects very similar." In 1926, investigations by Iwasé4 showed marked change in absorp-tion coefficients for various gases in copper above and below the liquidus.

The bibliography of Dr. Barton's published scientific paperst includes investigations in physiography and surface geological mapping, as well as his geophysical papers, and from this list it is to be observed that he early recognized the place of different types of geophysical prospecting methods in the search for geological structures of economic importance. Moreover, his viewpoint was not merely that the structures should be found, but that the geophysical data should be examined quantitatively to determine the geometry of the structures. In other words, that although these data are insufficient to deduce a unique form for the structure that caused the effects measured in the data, the engineering computations should be carried out to give as much of a definite configuration to the structure as the data permitted, in order that the testing of the structures could be conducted in the most economical manner and with the idea that the experience so gained could be later incorporated in the study of structures subsequently found. Dr. Barton continually emphasized the quantitative use of geophysical observations, whereas at the time that he began his specialization in geophysics it was considered sufficient to use observations only qualitatively. He, more than any one else, was responsible for the first volume on geophysical prospecting issued by the Institute in 1929, and his three articles in that volume stressed the quantitative use of geophysical prospecting. The fourth article in this present Technical Publication is a further contribution to this branch of geophysical interpretation, and is a supplement to the paper in the 1929 volume, "Calculations in the Interpretation of Observations with the Eötvös Torsion Balance."
