The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining, methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation, of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

THERE is one problem of the new administration that has received the attention and thought of the organized engineers of America for many years past. This is the problem of the reorganization of the Federal Government. The, inadequacy, the wastefulness, and the inefficiency of our federal organization was evident, enough under pre-war conditions. These inadequacies, these inefficiencies, these wastes were exhibited to the country during the war at the cost of millions. Congress has placed the problem in the hands of a very able Congressional Joint Committee, but if this Joint Committee succeeds in securing the imminently necessary results it will only be by full insistent support to it by public opinion. Many attempts have been made at reorganization before but all, of them have gone to the same crematory-the interminable differences in opinion among the executive and legislative officials over details.

Grain boundary sliding and migration were studied in pure aluminum bicrystal and polycrystal samples with two-dimensional grain structure. Scratches, 50 P apart, were used for measurement of sliding and migration distanceso. Samples were deformed at constant rate at 315C and events recorded continuously on wrotion picture film. Electron micrograPhs of boundary-scratch intersections were obtained. Yield and flow stress values were measured. The sequence of sliding and migration events for a three-grain junction is described in detail. Sliding depended only on the resolved shear stress imparted to the boundary. Sliding was accowmodated by formation of shear zones in grains opposite triple points and adjacent to curved boundaries. These shear zones provided the driving force for grain boundary migration. Migration caused rumpling of the boundaries, decreasing the sliding rate. Sliding and migration generally began at the same time, occurred simultaneously and ended at the same time. In the bicrystal, sliding and migration rates were proportional. Initial sliding rules of 5 X joe cm per sec. were measured for the polycrystal and bicrystal samples. These sliding rates agree wilh the internal friction experirnents of K;. The observations seem consistent with a viscous boundary sliding nzechanism. GRAIN boundary sliding is the translation of one grain relative to its neighbor by a shear motion along their common boundary. Sliding is thought to be an important mode of deformation at elevated temperatures and at low strain rates such as prevail in creep,' and perhaps in the area of superplastic behavior.2"4 Although much work has been done to investigate grain boundary sliding, the effort has not led to the identification of a mehanism. KG showed that grain boundaries in aluminum exhibit a viscous nature under very small displacements of internal friction measrements. Various dislocation mechanisms have been proposed but are without conclusive experimental support. Attempts to relate sliding to 6's viscous boundaries have been unsuccessful in that measured rates of sliding are always several orders of magnitude lower than KG'S results would predict.= In bi crystals7and polycrystalsR of aluminum tested under constant load, the grain boundary sliding was found to be proportional to the total creep elongation which indicated that sliding might be controlled by deformation of the grains. Shear zones were observed to extend beyond grain boundaries at triple points to accommodate the sliding.8 Surface observations brought forth the opinion that sliding and migration occurred alternately, in sequence.' Measurements of sliding at the surface have been criticized because they might not be representative of the interior of the sample. Generally speaking, it seemed that much of the previous work and knowledge was based on observations made at relatively low magnification and examination of samples after deformation had been accomplished. Thus, it was the purpose of the present study to continuously record, at high magnification, the events occurring during the deformation of pure aluminum. Samples with two-dimensional grain structures were used to simplify interpretation of the results. The sliding and migration of small areas of many samples were continuously recorded by time-lapse motion pictures. Replicas of the surface were used to provide high-resolution electron micrographs. These observations, coupled with tmsile strength data, provide sufficient information to arrive at an understanding of the phenomenon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An ingot of 99.999 pct A1 was rolled to sheet, 0.127-cm thick. Tensile specimens, with a gage length of 0.85 cm, were machined from the sheet. Bicrystal tensile specimens, of the same dimensions, were spark cut from a large bicrystal ingot. The grain boundary was oriented at 45 deg to the tensile axis. The surfaces of the tensile samples were ground flat on fine metallographic paper and were then electropolished in a solution of 75 parts absolute alcohol and 25 parts of perchloric acid. The solution was cooled in an ice-water bath. Using a weighted sewing needle suspended from a small pivot on a precision milling machine, a grid of fine scratches, 50 p apart, was scribed on one surface of the sample. The polycrystalline samples were then annealed in hydrogen for 15 min at 350" to 400°C to produce a two-dimensional grain structure of about 0.2-cm average grain diameter which would not undergo further growth at the test temperature, 315OC. Examination of both surfaces of the samples showed that the grain boundaries were perpendicular to the surface of the polycrystal and bicrystal samples. A hot-stage tensile machine was constructed for use with an optical microscope as shown in Fig. 1. The specimen is shown mounted in the grips. The grips ride in V-ways so that the sample can be mounted without damage. The rear grip is free to slide so that when the sample expands during heating it is not put under a compressive stress. When the grips and samples are at temperature, the rear grip is locked in place by two set-screws. Lead single crystals have been deformed in tension over the temperature range of 4.2°K to the melting point. Changes in flow stress resulting from temperature cycling and strain rate cycling have been measured as a function of temperature for crystals of different orientations and purity. It was found that the flow stress ratio, after correcting for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus, decreased progressively with temperature above approximately 0.5Tm. The activation energy calculated from the high-temperature portion of the curve was found to be markedly higher than that of self-diffusion. For single glide crystals, the corrected flow stress showed an increase above 0.5 Tm before decreasitzg with temperature. This increase is attributed to static recovery occurrittg during temperature cycling. THE temperature dependence of the flow stress, based on temperature cycling and strain rate cycling, has been extensively investigated,' and on the basis of these results dislocation models of the work-hardening process have been proposed. In general, the flow stress is divided into two parts, ts, the short-range interaction term, which is only effective at low temperatures and which decreases with increasing temperature, and TG, the long-range stress term, which is independent of temperature after allowing for the temperature dependence of the shear modulus. The observations demonstrating that tG/µ is independent of temperature were generally carried out at low temperatures to minimize recovery effects. Several investigations have been reported on flow stress measurements at high temperatures2"5 which demonstrate that TG/µ does not remain constant at temperatures above 0.5Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature of the material in OK). Specifically, Hirsch and warrington3 carried out temperature cycling tests at two strain rates on single and polycrystalline aluminum up to 0.8 Tm and on polycrystalline copper. For aluminum they found that the flow stress ratio (the flow stress at temperature T2, divided by the flow stress at the reference temperature T1 in one temperature cycle) dropped progressively with increasing temperature above 0.5Tm. From the slopes of the high-temperature portions of the curves, they determined an activation energy for the deformation process of 1.6 ev (at best) which they considered was in agreement with the activation energy of self-diffusion, 1.35 ev. Calculations of the activation volume demonstrated that the deformation was not controlled by dislocation climb. They proposed a mechanism in which the rate-controlling process at high temperatures was due to the rate of move- ment of vacancies away from jogs, i.e., that of self-diffusion. Results of Lucke and Buhler4 on single crystals of aluminum confirmed this conclusion. They measured the critical resolved shear stress of aluminum over a wide range of temperature and strain rates. They found that the temperature dependence of the critical resolved shear stress was similar to that of the flow stress ratio, as determined by Hirsch and Warrington, and from their data calculated an activation energy for high-temperature deformation of 1.35 ev identical to that of self-diffusion. More recently Gallagher5 has carried out a detailed investigation of the temperature dependence of the flow stress ratio of copper, silver, and gold. In all cases, he found that the flow stress ratio, after adjusting for the shear modulus temperature change, drops at high temperatures. The activation energies he determined were found to be appreciably higher than the activation energy of self-diffusion of the material being considered. The flow stress ratio was found to be dependent on the orientation of the material, and, in addition, an anomalous increase in the flow stress ratio for copper, oriented for single glide, was observed above 0.5Tm. The purpose of the present investigation was to measure the critical resolved shear stress, the flow stress ratio, and the strain rate sensitivity of lead, primarily as a function of temperature. The results should indicate whether, following Lucke and Buhler, the critical resolved shear stress of lead has the same temperature dependence as the flow stress, and, following Hirsch and Warrington, whether the activation energy for high-temperature deformation in lead is the same as that of self-diffusion. Lead deforms as a normal fee material,6'7 is available in high-purity form, can readily be grown as single crystals, and, for this investigation, has the very considerable advantage of having a low melting point, 327°C. The observations of the critical resolved shear stress of lead have been published elsewhere.' EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The experimental procedure was essentially the same as that used in the critical resolved shear stress measurements.' Single crystals of 99.999 pct (59) and 99.9999 pct (69) lead were deformed in tension with a table-model Instron in a silicone oil bath above room temperatures and in a cooled methyl alcohol or liquid-nitrogen bath below room temperatures. The test specimens were rectangular in section, 0.65 by 0.33 cm, and had a 5-cm gage length. The specimens were grown as single crystals with tapered ends, which fitted into matched tapered grips for testing. To obtain the flow stress between two temperatures, specimens were first deformed approximately 1.0 pct at the higher temperature. The test was then stopped, the load relaxed, the oil bath removed without disturbing the specimen, the grips and specimen cooled with a fan and then immersed in liquid nitro-

Mechanical inclusion, electrophoretic deposition, and adsorption were studied as mechanisms for code-position of aluminas present in copper-plating electrolytes as an insoluble disperse phase. Mechanical inclusion was not a significant factor. That codeposi-tzon of aluminas by an electrophoretic mechanism was unlikely was substantiated by measurements of the potential of the aluminas. The alumina content of the deposits was studied as a function of the pH of the bath. These tests in conjunction with sedimentation studies demonstrated the absence of an isoelectric point for the alutninas over the pH range examined. Thiourea in the electrolyte (a substance known to be adsorbed on a copper cathode during electrodeposition) affected the amount of alumina in the electrodeposit. However, no adsorption of thiourea on aluminas in aqueous dispersions was detected. If it were possible to produce a dispersion-hardened alloy of copper and alumina by electrodeposition, an alloy possessing both strength and high conductivity at elevated temperatures might be anticipated. Investigation of the mechanism of codeposition of aluminas with copper was undertaken with the hope that knowledge of the mechanism would aid in the development of such an alloy. The word "codeposit" here does not necessarily imply an electrolytic phenomenon but rather that the materials codepositing, the various aluminas, are transported to and embedded in the electrodeposited copper by some means. Mechanical inclusion in electrodeposition implies a mechanism of codeposition which is wholly mechanical in nature; the only forces acting on a particle are gravity and contact forces. Such a particle is presumed to be electrically inert and incapable of any electrical interaction with electrodes in an electrolytic plating bath. Processes for matrices containing a codeposited phase by electrodeposition from a bath containing a disperse insoluble phase frequently state that code-position is caused by mechanical inclusion.10,2,12 If settling, i.e., gravity, be the controlling mechanism for codeposition of aluminas, then assumptions may be made that 1) the content of alumina in the electrodeposit should be enhanced by increasing the particle size, 2) the geometry of the system, that is, the disposition of the cathode surfaces relative to the di- rection of the falling particles, should affect the alumina content of the electrodeposit, 3) in geometrically identical systems the chemical composition of the electrolyte employed should exercise no effect on the alumina content of the deposit, that is, the alumina content should be the same in all cathode deposits irrespective of bath composition. A bent cathode19 evaluates the clarity of filter effluent in electroplating baths by comparing the roughness of the deposit on the vertical surface with that on the horizontal surface. Two difficulties are inherent in this technique: 1) the current density on the horizontal portion of the cathode would be substantially greater than that on the vertical surface; 2) should the deposit obtained be rough, projections on the vertical face could act as horizontal planes and vitiate the relationship between the vertical and horizontal surfaces. Bath composition should have no substantial effect on the alumina content of the deposit. Two different electrolytic baths were employed. They possessed variant specific conductances and substantially different pH ranges. The experimental tanks were rectangular Pyrex battery jars 6 in. wide by 3 1/4 in. long by 9 3/4 in. deep. The cathodes were stainless steel 316 sheet of 0.030 in. thickness, cut to 7.5 by 1.75 in. and bent at right angles to form an L-shaped cathode whose horizontal surfaces measured 1.75 by 3.0 in. All edges and vertical surfaces were masked with Scotch Elec-troplaters Tape No. 470. The anodes were electrolytic cathode copper 9 in. high by 2.25 in. wide by 0.5 in. thick. To eliminate inordinately high current densities on the projecting edge of the cathode, the anode was masked 1 in. above and below the projected line of intersection of the cathode with the anode. The exposed area of the anode was equal to that of the cathode, providing both with equal average current densities. The agitator in the cell was of Pyrex glass and positioned so its center line was equidistant from cathode and anode, and a plane passed horizontally through the center of the blade would be located equidistant from the bottom of the cathode and the bottom of the deposition tank. The assembled apparatus is depicted in Fig. 1. Hatched areas on anode and cathode represent the area of the electrodes wrapped with electroplaters tape. MATERIALS The chemicals were copper sulfate—CuSO4 • 5H2O— technical powder (Fisher Scientific Co.). Spectro-graphic analysis showed substantial freedom from antimony, arsenic, and iron. Traces of nickel were present.

AT present the Federal Government represents the only organization applying geophysical methods of prospecting in Brazil. The geophysical work of the National Department of Mineral Production, which will be described in the following pages, must be considered as a program of experimental work designed to demonstrate the applicability of the more or less "standard" methods of geophysical prospecting to various problems of economic interest in Brazil by means of practical examples of results obtained in certain typical areas. Our work is somewhat similar to that of the Imperial Geophysical Experimental Survey of Australia, but our task has been greatly simplified by the ever increasing number of technical publications relative to the theory of instruments and methods.

(communication to the Secretary*): The recent papers in the Transactions by Vogt,' Lindgren2 and Weed: on ore-deposits that have formed as a direct result of igneous intrusions, show that deposits of this class are widely distributed over the world, and are occasionally of commercial value. This is especially true if we consider under this head all deposits in the zone of contactrnletamorphism, the origin of which may be ascribed to the gases and vapors generated by the heat of the intrusive rock. Mr. Smith's description of the Chillagoe garnet-formations containing copper, leads one to regard these depoaits as of contactrmetamorphic origin, although he gives certain reaeons for supposing them to be of igneous origin.

Meeting, Apr. 25, 1913.-President Rand recommended the appointment of the Nominating Committee (see p. i), and a Committee on the Use of Electricity in Mines (see p. xliv), which committees were duly approved and appointed. President Rand recommended the establishment of. a Committee on Mining Methods, and requested authority for the President to appoint the members of this Committee, both of which recommendations were approved. The name of the Committee on Economic Geology was, at its own request, changed to the Committee on Mining Geology. The request of the Iron and Steel Committee, that a meeting of the Institute, under the auspices of this Committee, be held in the latter part of October, the place of meeting to be decided later, was granted.

A NUMBER of factors, of varying importance, should be considered in assessing mineral land-here specifically coal land -for tax purposes. (1) Is the coal developed or un- developed'! (2) If undeveloped, is it surrounded by active development in adjoining properties? (3) Accessibility of railroad facilities to the property. Sometimes the railroad itself is of importance. (4) Cost of development of the seam under consideration, whether it can be developed by a drift from the outcrop or whether it will require deep and costly shafts or slopes. (5) Is it definitely known that the coal seam being assessed is of minable thickness and quality on the property? (6) Thickness of recoverable coal from the seam. (7) Quality of the coal. (8) Is the seam being assessed likely to be more costly to mine than other seams in the same district? (9) Is there an active market demand for coal from the seam being assessed? (10) Is the coal held only as protection to surface structures and in such location that it can never be mined? (11) Is the coal in a solid piece or is it in pillars that have been standing for some years as a result of incomplete mining in an old operation? (12) Expected percentage of recovery from the seam being assessed as determined by present mining practice in similar properties. (13) Value of the seam as indicated by sales of similar mineral rights in the immediate district. (14) Current royalty rates of leases for coal in the seam under consideration.

Operations ill Colorado oil fields in 1934 were not quite so extensive as in 1933, but much better results were obtained and one new oil field was discovered. In all, 26 wells were drilled, of which 9 were oil wells, 1 was a gas well, and 16 were dry holes. New oil production totaled 10,220 bbl. and new gas production totaled 33,714,000 cu. ft. This compares with new oil production in 1933 of 1238 bbl. and new gas production of 14,307,000 cu. ft. Dry holes in 1933 totaled 29 as conlpared with 16 in 1934. Oil was discovered in the Hiawatha gas field, Moffat County, in 1934 in the Mountain Fuel Supply Company's No. 4B Wilson, C. NE. NW. of sec. 23, 12N., 100W. This well was completed in a sand in the Wasatch (Tertiary) at 2304 to 2337 ft., after plugging back from 3797 ft. It made 20 bbl. of oil initially. No. 4B Wilson is the first well in the Rocky Mountain region to discover oil in commercial amounts in rocks younger than Cretaceous, and while it is not expected that Hiawatha will develop into an oil field of important proportions, eventually it may produce a considerable amount of oil as the gas pressure declines. COAL preparation, or coal washing, is not a new subject to the Pacific Northwest. Most of the coals mined in this state smaller than lump, and nearly all such sizes mined on the Pacific slope of the Cascade mountains, require washing before marketing. A large proportion is being put through some washing process, but coal washing in this state, has not reached the efficiency it is practicable to obtain. In fields where the coal, as mined, contains less impurities, where working conditions make it practicable to eliminate some of these impurities under- ground, or where a large proportion of the run-of-mine coal is lump, coal preparation does not present the problem it does in our local field. Here the coal is associated with considerable impurities and the slack, or steam sizes, aggregate about 80 per cent. of the output. Therefore, approximately 80 per cent. of the coal mined must be washed to become a valuable fuel. Washing then becomes a major operation, as hand picking of the 20 per cent. of lump is a standard and comparatively simple operation. Some coal beds here are so interstratified with bone, of a more or less massive nature, that hand picking of lump is not economically efficient. In such cases the coal must be crushed fine enough for it to be freed from the bone, so that the two may be separated. Coal cleaning in this field, therefore, must receive skilled attention to purify this fuel and raise its stand- ard. Without greater efficiency in cleaning, the importation of coal from outside the state will be even greater than in the past.

IN 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northeast of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and Lux. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Through the courtesy of H. D. Brown and W. J: Brundred, officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., all their data on this operation were made available to the writer in connection with an investigation of rejuvenation methods in the State for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey.

ALTHOUGH much effort has been devoted to the problem, the nature of plastic flow in bcc metals is still not fully understood. Some of the difficulties encountered stem from the scarcity of information on orientation effects and the uncertainty as to the glide system in these metals. In an attempt to provide some of this information, the present investigation was carried out, using zone-refined molybdenum single crystals deformed in tension and in direct shear. Considerable evidence exists to indicate that the primary slip system for molybdenum is (110) <111>.1,2 Figs. 1 and 2 indicate that this is, indeed, the case for direct shear at room temperature (see Ref. 3 for a description of the shear-testing equipment and procedure). Moreover, from Fig. 2, the shear stress on the (123) is lower than that on the (112). This would be the case if, as has been suggested,4,5 slip on these two planes is in reality com-

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out in 1959 to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geo-chemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 21 returned completed questionnaires and of these, 15 companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only three have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. The others have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick and in the Cordillera in areas of light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid when accompanied by other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas. GEOCHEMICAL SURVEYS Table I reviews the type of geochemical surveys used by these companies, and the following points of interest should be noted.

DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett&apos;s analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. The volcanics are also said to occur in considerable amount in the Mazapil valley.&apos;&apos; Turning now to the remarks under Regional Structure, p. 586, as partly indicated on the general map, Fig. 4, the Mazapil Mountains of the Mazapil region are a continuous, U-shaped range including a northern leg of some 24 km, a southern leg of similar length, and a uniting base which lies to the East and which measures some 10 km in a S 20 E direction. Thus the U-shaped mountains are continuous through a length of 58 km and also contain one continuous anticline, the adjacent valleys being synclinal. The northern leg of the U is called the La Caja range, the base is called the Concepcion del Oro range, and the southern leg the Santa Rosa range. The ranges in northeastern Zacatecas and southern Coahuila contain anticlines and the valleys contain synclines, which where thin are necessarily highly compressed isoclines with very steep dips. Many of the anticlines also have isoclinal components which are overturned, original mushroom tops being indicated. The anticline in the base of the U of the Mazapil Region, Concepcion del Oro range, is a recumbent anticline, over to the ENE, with a necessarily subjacent recumbent syncline.

DISCUSSION John G. Barry (Mexico)—"The Nerinea limestone," writes W. H. Triplett, p. 584, "is ... medium-bedded (0.5 to 1.0 m)...." This is the Zuloaga formation. It has always been described as thick-bedded (1.0 to 3.0 m). "Whether the marls and shales were less amenable to replacement," he goes on to say, ". . . is a matter of opinion." In general, it is probable that the thinner-bedded formations were less competent than the nearby thicker-bedded, so that the latter produced pre-mineral breccias when all were subjected to flexing stresses. With reference to Mr. Triplett&apos;s analysis, p. 584, under Lower Cretaceous, in the Taraises and Cupido formations some few horizons should be considered as possibly containing hidden orebodies. In the Potrero camp, shown on the general map in the northwestern part of Fig. 4, p. 587, several mineralized beds are known; they are found throughout the whole thickness of the Cuesta del Cura formation. With regard to intrusive rocks, p. 585, the general map, Fig. 4, shows that the Potrero and Noche Buena camps are near a third, monzonitic intrusive. It seems doubtful that the Aranzazu was any hotter than the Providencia camp. However, the former does contain large deposits of exogenetic silicates, which in large part occur within the Zuloaga limestone, as shown by Bergeats in a stereogram. At the Aranzazti camp the La Caja formation was only slightly changed, whereas it was altered highly at the Providencia, possibly en-dogenetically. That the temperatures at the Providencia camp were relatively high at one time is also shown by the tourmaline veinlets and lenses in the monzonite and by the garnets on Temeroso peak; high temperature mineralization has possibly been eroded. Maps and sections show that the Concepcion del Oro —Temeroso stock occupies the original locus of some 40 kms of sedimentary rocks. The remains of large roof pendants at Carmen and Animas indicate that stoping was active. Whether all the sedimentaries were stoped and assimilated presents a lively problem, a correlative of which would be an estimate of the original constitution of the invading instrusive rock. As to extrusive rocks, see p. 585, there is also a large thick area of the extrusives left near Noche Buena in the "La Caja" intramontane valley of the La Caja range. This place gave its name to the range. AT the McGill concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., all flotation operations have been carried out in Forrester cells since November, 1926. In respect to cost of operation, the new cell has proved to be superior to the Callow, which it supplanted, and its incorporation in the flow sheet has resulted in a marked improvement in the metallurgy. Before citing the advantages of the new machine over the old, it should be explained that the Forrester has not only replaced the Callow, but it has made possible the elimination of a number of tables as well. When Callow cells were in use, table concentration preceded flotation. The ball mill pulp was elevated, by means of air lifts, to roughing Wilfley tables situated two floors directly above the flotation floor. On an intermediate floor were additional tables which cleaned the concentrate from those above. The finished table concentrate constituted approximately 60 per cent. of the total mill production, and contained about 40 per cent. of the recovered copper. The table tailings were returned to the classifiers, the overflow from which went to the flotation cells and the oversize to the ball mills. As soon as the Forrester cells were installed, this tabling operation was discontinued. The ball mill pulp now discharges into the classifiers direct, without the intermediate tabling. It was impracticable to employ the present flow sheet when Callow cells were in use, for the reason that unless the greater part of the heavy mineral was first removed, it accumulated on the mats and adversely affected the flotation operation. By tabling ahead of flotation, it was practicable to maintain the concentrator at 10 to 20 per cent. greater capacity (depending up on the pyrite content of the ore) than was possible by flotation alone. This was due to the necessity for finer grinding in the latter case. Even though the table concentrates contained only 6 to 8 per cent. copper con- tent, the low smelting costs made it advantageous to operate at high mill capacity, at the cost of low grade of product. IN ATTEMPTING to summarize briefly the reconstruction of the Hecla plant since the fire, three important facts must be held in mind; namely: a hurry-up job with the shadow of an insurance company in the background; restriction of working space in the narrow Burke Canyon; and building two-thirds of the plant on a filled area. Construction work was carried on without interruption through the winter season. These adverse conditions have contributed many obstacles not ordinarily encountered in mining work. The first problems immediately after the fire were organization and policy; the-former to create an efficient construction crew out of a mining organization; the latter to determine the type and extent of surface plant to be built. The new crew was organized from a nucleus of mine employees, 25 per cent. of the old crew remaining for construction work. Permanent fireproof buildings were decided upon, the general arrangement of the new plant to be similar to the old one as far as possible, at the same time enlarging it 100 per cent. in anticipation of the demands which would be made upon it when the Star Mine began operating. Cleaning up the wreckage was a big job, the extent of which is indicated by the fact that 30 carloads of scrap iron and steel were moved off the property. In re-establishing transportation facilities at the plant, a previous disadvantage of a steep grade on the high line was obviated by excavating 1600 yd. of solid rock; the fire having destroyed all town buildings below, made this work possible.
