MINE operators today are paying increased attention to the mechanization of drilling operations as an important factor in increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. Recent progress in the design of drill jibs for mounting on drill carriages, or jumbos, has done much to advance the mechanization of mining methods. This progress has introduced new opportunities in the application of "jib jumbos" that are worth serious consideration. An attempt will be made here to classify the various types of jumbos and drill mountings available for level development and flat stope work, t6 indicate applications, and to measure their effectiveness in relation to their cost. The data here are based on a wide variety of field usage, and are offered only to point up, in a general way, the relative efficiency in proportion to cost. It should be remembered that any contemplated jumbo installation must be studied to determine what type of installation is most suitable, considering ground conditions, loading, timbering and haulage equipment, service available, and attitude of manpower. Early Drill Carriages: The advantages of some sort of a drill carriage were recognized at the time rock drills were introduced. In drift or heading operations where a fairly standard drill round and cross section were anticipated, as well as in flat bedded deposits where standard slabbing rounds were used, track and crawler-mounted drills found an early application. These first drill jumbos were little more than drill carriers, designed locally and manufactured with materials at hand. Of comparatively simple construction, function, and low capital cost, they usually consisted of a hinged column which supported one or more drills on arms or universal bars. When the column was pivoted vertically, the drills were moved into position. Screw jack extensions reached from the column to the roof and floor to hold the drill rigid. In some cases, particularly in tunnel jumbos, enough weight was carried that rail clamps or roof jacks were sufficient. Many of these column and arm-type jumbos, usually equipped with air and water manifolds, steel racks, and staging for drillers, are still in use today. Some have employed air or hydraulic extensions for securing the columns. They offer the equip-saving advantage of having all the necessary out, ment together, and they un be moved i and t. set up and torn down as a unit. Boom-type Jumbos: When the advantages of to column-type jumbo were seen, operators could to realize the further gains possible. More time could be saved with mechanical assistance to position api drill vertically. A rack on the column and a pinion on the arm for raising and lowering the drill in the manner of a quarry bar were tried with some success. The most outstanding solution to the vertical handling problem was reached with the boom-type of jumbo. Here two or more machines were mounted on a cross arm at the end of a boom that was pivoted at the rear of the track. This was raised and lowered by various mechanical aids. Occasionally air or hydraulic power was used. Nearly all of today's wagon drills use this boom-type principle. Boom jumbos represent a savings in time and physical effort expended in raising and lowering the drills. The boom must be balanced by the roof of the truck which is secured by rail clamps or type jacks. Ultrasonic attenuation and stress were measured simultaneously as a function of strain for aluminum single crystals tested in compression. The propagation mode and polarization of the ultrasonic waves were chosen with reference to the theoretical analysis presented in Part I. Good experimental agreement was found with this theory and with earlier experimental work in tensile tests. Support is given to the contention that ultrasonic -attenuation measurements are much more sensitive to the early stages of plastic deformation than are conventional stress -strain measurements. Dislocation meclzanisms are suggested which are compatible with both the present and the earlier experimental observations. A brief historical introduction of previous work concerned with the study of dislocation motion by ultrasonic-attenuation measurements has been given in Part I. The purpose of the present experimental investigation was to make use of the theoretical considerations from Part I in order to gain further knowledge concerning dislocation motions during plastic deformation. Emphasis was placed on the choice of propagation modes and polarization of the waves, such that interactions between these waves and dislocation movement on a specific slip system could be investigated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Since the primary concern of this investigation was dislocation damping, other sources of damping were eliminated as much as possible. The test specimens were 0.5-in.-diam single crystals of 99.99+ pct pure aluminum grown from the melt by a modified Bridgman technique. Ultrasonic-attenuation measurements were made at a frequency of 10 megacycles per sec using a Style 56A001 Ultrasonic Attenuation Comparator manufactured by Sperry Products Inc. after a design by Chick, An- derson, and Truell.1 At this frequency the particle vibrations are essentially adiabatic and thermo-elastic damping should be absent. This frequency was selected since it was one of the frequencies used by Hikata et al.2 n conjunction with tensile tests on aluminum crystals, thus allowing direct comparison with this work. The use of quartz-crystal transducers insures that the amplitude of vibration is not sufficient to cause the break away of the dislocation loops from weak pinning points. The quartz-crystal transducers used all possessed a resonance frequency of 10 megacycles per sec and were thin circular discs 0.375 in. in diameter. X-cut crystals were used to generate the longitudinal waves and AC-cut crystals to generate the transverse waves. Aluminum was chosen as the basic material because it is a typical fcc metal whose deformation behavior is well-known and because the most recent work at the time the present research was initiated was that by Hikata et al. who used aluminum. The present tests were run in compression to see if such tests could be satisfactorily run in compression without being severely masked by grip effects.. A second reason was to compare the results in compression with those of the tension experiments of Hikata et at. Finally, shorter specimens could be run in compression with less over-all damping than in tension. All of the aluminum-crystal test specimens used were oriented for plastic deformation by single slip; i.e., they possessed the orientation having a maximum Schmid factor of 0.5. Because of the well-known time dependence 3 of plastic strain at constant stress, the test specimens were subjected to a quasi-static loading. Previous investigations4-' have indicated that attenuation after plastic deformation is also time-dependent, so any continuous loading of the specimen would show that changes in attenuation were also a function of strain rate. By loading the specimen to a given stress level and holding it constant until the recovery process was essentially complete, the time dependence was eliminated. The quartz transducer was permanently bonded to the aluminum crystal using Eastman 910 cement. Excess cement was removed from around the quartz with DMF (dimethyl formamide). Eastman 910 was found to be far superior for bonding, especially with regard to the shear-wave transducer, since it formed a solid bond which readily supports shear-wave propagation. Equations are derived from statistical considerations to represent the activities of each component of an interstitial solution, and of a compound with a wide homogeneity range as a function of composition and temperature, based on the interaction energies between the various components, Eij. The equations are checked on the binary systems Fe-C, Ta-H, and Y-H, the ternary systems Ti-O-H, liquid Fe-C-0, and the compounds TiO, MnO, COO, and YH,. In all cases the present model represents the experimental data well. THE aim of this paper is to derive from statistical considerations the thermodynamic behavior of non-substitutional solid solutions. "Nonsubstitutional solid solution" means either an interstitial solid solution (carbon in iron, oxygen and hydrogen in hexagonal and bcc titanium, and so forth) or deviation from stoichiornetry in compounds (introduction of vacancies—removal of atoms in one or both lattice sites of compounds FeO, MnO, TiO, NbO, YH2). wagnerl and Fowler and Guggenheim considered the theory of compounds with small deviation from stoichiometry; Anderson includes larger deviations from stoichiometry, the defect being present in one component only, as vacancy and interstitial. Rees considers only vacancies in one of the components and introduces various kinds of sites for the component where the defect occurs; the various sites interact with different energies, thus giving isotherms with two or more plateaus. Both Rees and Anderson are mainly occupied in determining the limits of two-phase regions, and the defect interaction energy is determined from the critical point. Darken and Gurry5 gave a brief treatment of carbon solution in iron; Speiser and spretnak calculated the configurational entropy for binary interstitial solid solutions by assuming that each interstitial atom in the solution excludes a certain number of neighboring interstitial sites from occupancy. Use will be made of this concept later. Hoch et al treated transition metal oxides of the NaCl-type structure, and also oxygen solution in titanium.' The main aim was to determine the behavior of the activity of one of the components as a function of the composition in the single-phase region. In the present paper, the various interaction energies are discussed in detail and the similarity between interstitial solid solutions and deviation from stoichiometry in ionic compounds is shown. Both types of systems have in common that at least on one kind of lattice site only one kind of atom occurs; this gives a fixed frame to the system, permitting a much easier statistical treatment than for the substitu-tional solid solutions. (The theory is also applied to ternary systems.) The difference between an interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry can be explained as follows. In an interstitial solution in the pure or standard state the host atom or host structure is present alone and all the interstitial sites which are going to be filled when the interstitial atom is introduced are empty. The interstitial solution is now created by introducing atoms into this empty lattice. In the deviation from stoichiometry, both kinds of lattice sites are already occupied in a special fashion (all lattice sites occupied, or the same fraction of lattice sites empty, or one kind completely filled, the other only two-thirds). Deviation from stoichiometry removes atoms from lattice sites, adds them, or removes atoms from one kind of lattice site and introduces them on the other lattice site. Though both cases (interstitial solution and deviation from stoichiometry) lead almost to the same equations, they are treated separately. The treatment given below corresponds to the "regular solution"10 treatment of substitutional solid solutions. Speiser and spretnak's6 treatment is similar to the athermal solution in the substitutional use. a) INTERSTITIAL SOLID SOLUTIONS Theory. It will be assumed that there are N lat-tice sites occupied by the host atom (denoted by 1). Corresponding to those N lattice sites there are N octahedral and EN tetrahedral interstitial sites. THE commercial analysis of Special High-Grade zinc usually involves the determination of lead, iron, copper and cadmium as impurities in the base metal. Over the past 20 years, as the result of metallurgical improvements in the art of producing Special High-Grade zinc metal there has taken place a gradual exclusion of almost all extraneous elements, and the few that do remain in the final product have been virtually reduced to the vanishing point. Thousands of tons of zinc .are now commercially produced annually and made available to the trade, in which impurities are present only in the order of 0.0010 per cent or less and the sum total of all impurities does not exceed 0.0025 per cent. To such zinc the term "superpurity" might well be applied without undue exaggeration. The techniques used for production control and final analysis of Special High-Grade zinc by means of emission spectra in the laboratories of the electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. are based on the premise that self-electrodes are to be preferred over all other forms for the examination of the zinc in question. Furthermore, after a survey of the literature and considerable experimental work,1 it was decided that the spectrographic method of internal control, the principle of which was first announced by Gerlach,2 using a modification of the high-voltage alternating-current arc source introduced by Duffendack and Thompson,3 with the calibration of each photographic plate as recommended by Wolfe,4 would yield the most accurate and reproducible results. Self-electrodes were chosen in order to make use of one of the unique advantages inherent in spectrographic analysis; namely, the rapid and almost effortless detection of elements other than those being quantified by the analyst; or conversely, the proof that the zinc is free from such impurities if no spectral line of the suspected element appears. This fact was verified for certain elements, and will be discussed later. Carbon electrodes impregnated or packed with zinc salts chemically prepared from the zinc to be assayed were avoided for a number of reasons. First, the chemical manipulation was another time-consuming step, which increased the chances for contamination. Second, none of the common zinc salts, such as the chloride, nitrate or sulphate, yielded reproducible results under our conditions, nor did the spectral line of the impurity appear as readily in the low concentrations as when using zinc metal. Third, no commercial carbon, except the very expensive, was pure enough to use with this grade of zinc and the continued time, effort and expense incurred in the purification of carbon was not desirable. The use of Special High-Grade zinc self-electrodes introduces certain complications with regard to obtaining satisfactory excitation conditions, because it seems necessary to raise the temperature

The earliest mention of the sulphur deposits in what is now Culberson County, Texas, seems to be contained in " Explorations and Surveys for a Railroad Route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean, United States War Department, 1853-54." Captain John Pope (he was not commissioned Captain until 1856) had charge of one of the divisions of the Survey. In his report on the geology of the route, William P. Blake noted the analysis of a greenish earthy powder from the bed of Delaware Creek, at the springs, which contained 18.28 per cent. of free sulphur. The report states: "From the chemical examination of the waters of the spring, by Dr. Booth, it appears that chloride of sodium is the principal solid ingredient, but considerable quantities of sulphide of sodium are present. ***** The waters from the springs examined by Dr. Booth were alkaline, but it is possible that some of the springs are acid; and in this case the precipitation of sulphur would ensue on the mixture of the acid waters with those charged with alkaline sulphurets and the origin of the deposits of sulphur would be thus explained." This is the first reference to the existence of sulphur in that region, the first mention of the character of the water found there and the first suggestion as to the origin of the deposits. The possibility of the existence of acid waters was confirmed by E. M. Skeats, nearly 50 years later.' In this publication, Skeats says that the water from the sulphur deposits in Section 11, Block 114, Township 6, contains 79.08 grains of free sillphuric acid per gallon. This locality is about 13 miles (21 km.) south . of Delaware Creek and about 35 miles (56 km.) east of the Delaware Springs. The next published reference to the existence of sulphur in Trans-Pecos. Texas is in the Pirst Annual Report of the Geological Survey of Texas, 1889, page 226, where W. H. von Streeruwitz mentions that sulphur is found in that region, but gives no further information. A considerable quantity of experimental data is available on the effect of time, temperature, work-hardening and composition on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. There is, however, little unity of purpose or generality in most of the studies and, because the number of variables is large, the results often are not applicable to the problems that arise in practice. Furthermore, the customary expression of the effect of different variables as separate curves or as three-dimensional diagrams with time, temperature and the dependent variables as coordinates, renders the task of selecting the optimum time and temperature of precipitation treatment, with respect to their simultaneous but unequal effect on the various properties, exceedingly difficult. The introduction of precipitation treatments to raise the yield strength of 24S-type alloys has created a need for a method of correlating and summarizing the effect of time and temperature on the mechanical properties and susceptibility to intercrystalline corrosion. Correlation is particularly desirable because the choice of time and temperature is of necessity a compromise to achieve the best possible combination of properties, and the optimum conditions cannot be accurately specified unless the data are in a form in which the alternatives can be readily compared. Therefore, the work described here was undertaken to find a common relationship that would be capable of expressing the effect of precipitation time and temperature on the various properties and by means of which the relative effects could be correlated and their interpretation facilitated. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In connection with an investigation of the interrelation of age-hardening and creep performance of nickel-silicon-copper alloys, Jenkins and Bucknall1 demonstrated that the time required to attain maximum hardness and tensile strength could be expressed by a relationship of the form: t = K. 10m/T (I) where t is the time in hours and T the temperature of aging, expressed in degrees absolute, and m and K are constants. They also pointed out that this expression is analogous to that which describes the change of the diffusion coefficient D with temperature; namely, D = Ae-Q/RT (2) Later, Cohen used this relationship in studies of the mechanism of age-hardening of a silver- rich copper alloy2 and of duralumin. 3

THIS paper is a progress report covering metallographic applications of the electron microscope that have been made during the past year at Carnegie Institute of Technology. An account is presented of the techniques that have been most satisfactory, the difficulties encountered, the resolution obtained, and the peculiarities that have been noted in the microstructures. About 12m exposures have been made during the year on the instrument, which is an RCA type B2 transmission microscope,1 and a number of these have been selected to illustrate the results obtained. Prints are also included showing the common types of falsities-to borrow a term from the biological field, the "artifacts." In brief, the paper is a record of our attempt to determine the value of the electron microscope in the study of the structure of metals and alloys. n addition to comments on techniques and the quality of photomicrographs obtainable with them, the paper discusses the nature of the etch attack on a few metals, and the possible relation between the fine structure revealed by etching and the mosaic block structure of the grains. Since numerous papers and reviews are available on the subject of imperfection in crystals, the comments here may be very brief; in fact, are restricted almost entirely to points having to do with recent theories relating the strength of metals to imperfections and to spacings of slip lines. SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND PHOTOGRAPHS Mechanical polishing by hand was used throughout this work. Precautions that must be taken in microscopy at high magnification, which have been well explained by Vilella in his book on Metallographic Technique for Steel, are likewise important with the electron microscope. This applies particularly to the need for repeated polishing and etching (each successive polish becoming less severe and each etch lighter), since the final etch should in general be no heavier than is used for oil-immersion optical microscopy and in many instances should be much lighter (compare Figs. 6a and 7a, 6d and 7b). An extremely light etch, of course, is incapable of cutting through a flowed layer of appreciable thickness. Unquestionably it would be very advantageous in each instance to compare the structures obtained by electrolytic polishing with those obtained by mechanical polishing, but difficulties with the electrolytic method have prevented this in the following collection of prints. The choice of etchant is important, of course; for example, picral proved superior to nital for tempered martensite. With the exception of Figs. Ib and IC, the replicas used were of silica, deposited up0n polystyrene and floated from the polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to the method of Heidenreich and Peck.2 The samples were mounted in Bakelite, polished and etched, then the polished Bakelite

The oxidation resistance and fabricability of molybdenum powder-metallurgy alloys containing up to 20 wt pct nickel in the form of a fine dispersion were studied. The effects of dispersion distribution and of amount and type (pure nickel or nickel compounds) of additive were considered. A definite improvement in oxidation resistance was observed, but the amount of improvement fell far short of requirements for an oxidation-resistant alloy. Fabricability by hot-rolling was limited. INVESTIGATIONS at Ohio State university1 and Battelle Memorial institute2 have indicated that the attainment of a truly oxidation-resistant molybdenum-base alloy for high-temperature service, with the coincident retention of high-temperature strength and toughness, will be a difficult, if not impossible, feat. Among the most promising alloy systems studied was the molybdenum-nickel system shown in Fig. 1. Alloys in this system show good oxidation resistance at temperatures well above the normal melting point of molybdenum trioxide because of the regenerative formation of protective nickel-molyb-date (NiMoO4) on the surface of the alloy during exposure at high temperatures. Unfortunately, the required alloy content to obtain oxidation resistant molybdenum-nickel alloys far exceeds the limits of the narrow terminal solid-solution boundary, and closely approaches the peri-tectic composition involving the brittle intermetal-lic compound, MoNi. Because of the peritectic reaction, fusion alloys are characteristically brittle, since the MoNi phase, being the last to form, tends to occur as a continuous grain-boundary network around each molybdenum grain. An added problem with this system is that the protective nickel-molybdate layer formed at high temperatures is unstable, undergoing one or more allotropic modifications upon cooling. The volume changes associated with this modification during cooling are such as to cause violent expulsion of the protective molybdate coating from the surface of the piece. This is, of course, quite detrimental in material exposed to cyclic temperature during service. The research reported here resulted from an attempt to overcome the aforementioned problems associated with the molybdenum-nickel alloys primarily by controlling the amount, size, and location of the MoNi phase. By using powder-metallurgy techniques of alloy preparation and sintering the blended molybdenum-nickel powder mixtures at a temperature below the peritectic reaction temperature, molybdenum-nickel alloys with a randomly dispersed MoNi phase were produced. MATERIALS The molybdenum powder used in the preparation of alloys for this study was commercial hydrogen reduced, minus 325-mesh (Tyler) material. Master alloys, by which nickel was added, consisted of elemental carbonyl nickel powder (12 average particle size), an alloy of 50 wt pct Ni-50 wt pct Cr, and compounds of MoNi, Ni,Si, and Ni2B. The nickel-chromium powder was prepared by filing a vacuum-arc-melted ingot, separating impurities magnetically, and screening to minus 200-mesh. The MoNi powder was prepared by pulverizing a hydrogen-sintered powder-metallurgy compact to minus 325-mesh material. Further sizing of this powder for study of effects of dispersion distribution was accomplished by air classification of the minus 325-mesh powder. The Ni2Si and Ni2B powders were prepared by crushing vacuum-sintered powder-metallurgy compacts to minus 200-mesh material. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation—The general procedure followed in the preparation of alloys for testing is described as follows: 1) Blending. Either hand-blending of the powders in a ceramic mortar and pestle for X 1/2 or mechanical blending was used. Hand-blending seemed preferable for optimum homogeneity. 2) Compacting. Most of the blended powders were pressed to green compacts at pressures of 15 tons per sq in. in a single-action die, although some were pressed at 80 tons per sq in. A 1 X 11/4 X 1/4-in. green compact was the standard size for oxidation test material, and 7 X 1/2 X 1/4-in. compacts were used for fabricability test specimens. 3) Sintering. Relative permeability functions are developed for both two- and three-phase systems with the saturation changes in the imbibition direction. An empirical relation between residual nonwetting-phase saturation after water imbibition and initial nonwetting-phase saturations is found from published data. From this empirical relation, expressions are obtained for trapped and mobile nonwetting-phase saturations which are used in connection with established theory relating relative permeability to pore-size distribution. The resulting equations yield relative permeability as a function of saturation having characteristics believed to be representative of real systems. The relative permeability of water - wet rocks for both two- and three - phase systems, with the saturation change in the imbibition direction, may be obtained by this method after properly selecting two rock properties: the residual nonwetting-phase saturation after the complete imbibition cycle, and the capillary pressure curve. INTRODUCTION Relative permeability is a function of saturation history as well as of saturation. This fact was first pointed out for two-phase flow by Geffen et al. 1 and by Osaba et a1.2 Hysteresis in the relative permeability-saturation relation also has been reported for three-phase systems.3 Since saturations may change simultaneously in two directions in a three-phase system, four possible relationships arise between relative permeability and saturation for a water-wet system. The four saturation histories of this system were given by snel14 as 11, ID, DI and DD. I and D refer to the direction of saturation change (imbibition and drainage), with the first letter of the symbol indicating the direction of change of the water phase. As used in this paper, the second letter of the symbol refers to the direction of saturation change of the gas phase, i.e., D and I indicate an increase and decrease, respectively, in gas saturation. Only a few three-phase relative permeability curves have been published. Leverett and Lewis5 published three-phase curves for unconsolidated sand, and Snell4 reported results of several English authors for both drairrage and imbibition three-phase relative permeability of unconsolidated sands. Three-phase relative permeability curves for a consolidated sand were published by Caudle et a1.3 for increasing water and gas saturations (ID). Corey et a1.6 reported drainage (DD) three-phase relative permeability for consolidated sands. Recently, Donaldson and Dean7 and Sarem8 calculated three-phase relative permeability curves from displacement data on consolidated sands, also for saturation changes in the drainage direction. The only published three-phase relative permeability curves for consolidated sands with saturation changes in the imbibition direction (11) are those of Naar and Wygal.9 These curves are based on a theoretical study of the model of Wyllie and Gardner 10 as modified by Naar and Henderson.11 Interest in three-phase relative permeability has increased recently due to the introduction of new recovery methods and refinements in calculation procedures brought about by the use of large-scale digital computers. The scarcity of empirical relations for three-phase flow, and the experimental difficulty encountered in obtaining such data, have made the theoretical approach to this problem attractive. RELATIVE PERMEABILITY AS A FUNCTION OF PORE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION Purcell used pore sizes obtained from mercury-injection capillary pressure data to calculate the permeability of porous solids.12 Burdine extended the theory by developing a relative permeability-pore size distribution relation containing the correct tortuosity term.13 The works of Purcell and Burdine were combined by Corey14 into a form that has

That was all discussed in the Carson case, and I do not know but what many of the plants are still using center charging. Some are using side charging. Did I understand that where you use the wet charge it is all side charging on the wet ore? B.-G. C. HONEYMAN.- We were on center charging for about a year with wet ore. R. F. McELVENNY.- Then you went to side charging. Has anyone any remarks to make on side versus center charging? E. A. BARNARD.- We have one side and one center, both on deep bath. It is an experimental proposition so far, but the side charge looks very favorable.. R. F. McELVENNY.- This is with calcine? E. A. BARNARD.- This is with calcine on a floating charge proposition.. They are both water jacket. The charge acts very similar on both center and side charging. The calcine spreads much the same as it does on the center charge. It will run down 75 ft. on the furnace side as well as the center. The advantage is in taking care of secondaries and things of that nature. C. BARDWELL.- Do you get any side wall protection from it? E. A. BARNARD.- No. R. F. McKENZIE.- Do you not project the side wall up to protect the skewback? E. A. BARNARD.- There is a slot projection down around the top of the bath; but the repairs on the side wall have been practically the same; that is, they, have been practically the same as they have on the center charge. RICHARDS.- A point I would like to make is that if you have any doubt about the center charging, we feel that we get better tonnages and lower fuel ratios and better slags with center charging than we ever got with side. Different kinds of charges would, of course, vary, and I could readily see that if you had the same advantage with deep bath smelting that you mention you would probably get just as good a slag and as good fuel ratios. Mechanical properties of columbium have been studied over the temperature range of -196 to 1093oC. The decreased strengthening influence of cold-work at temperatures below ambient has been interpreted in terms of the Peierls-Nabarro effect. Maxima in the rate of strain hardening observed during tensile testing in the range 250-600°C. have been correlated with interstitial impurities to indicate the temperature ranges at which carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, respectively, are responsible for strain aging. THE growing need for structural materials for use above the useful service temperatures of the iron-, nickel-, or cobalt-base alloys has caused the refractory metals to be considered as potential engineering materials. These metals, which include columbium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten, are called refractory because the lowest melting point among them,that of columbium, is about 1000°C higher than the average melting temperatures of conventional high-temperature alloys. They are all body-centered cubic transition metals and, as such, their mechanical properties have basic characteristics which distinguish them from the face-centered cubic metals. For example, all show a much steeper rise in strength with decreasing temperature below room temperature than do the face-centered cubic metals, and their mechanical properties are strongly influenced by interstitially dissolved impurities. In order that these new metals may be used efficiently, it is necessary that their characteristics of behavior be fully known. In this paper, the mechanical properties of columbium will be examined over a wide range of temperatures. In particular, the influences of cold-work and individual species of interstitial impurity atoms on mechanical properties will be described, and basic mechanisms which may control the observed characteristics will be explored. EXPERIMENTAL The material used in this investigation was Union Carbide Metals Co. columbium roundels consolidated to four 4-in. diam ingots, three by consumable-electrode arc melting and one ingot by electron beam melting. Impurity contents of the ingots and methods of ingot conversion and treatment are summarized in Table I. The only metallic impurity occurring in any significant quantity was tantalum at about 0.1 pct. Iron, silicon, titanium, and zirconium were each less than 0.015 pct; boron was 1 ppm or less. This should have no appreciable influence on properties. The electron beam melted material, being the purest, will be used as the basis for comparison in the discussions to follow. Tensile tests were conducted from-196 to 1093oC, on both cold-worked and fully recrystallized arc-melted and electron-beam melted columbium using standard 1/4-in. diam, 1-in. long gage length test specimens. A strain-rate of 0.005 in. per in. per min was employed until the 0.2 pct yield strength was achieved and then the strain-rate was increased to 0.05 in. per in. per min for the balance of the test. Samples were protected in an inert atmosphere at tests above 300°C. The tensile properties obtained on the electron-beam melted columbium, E, in both the cold-swaged and recrystallized conditions are given in Fig. 1. The yield strength data of Dyson, et al.,' obtained on recrystallized electron beam melted columbium and the tensile strength data reported by Tottle2 on powder metallurgy columbium are included in Fig. 1. The material used by Tottle had been purified by vacuum sintering. There is excellent agreement between Dyson's data and those obtained in the present investigation. The tensile strengths obtained by Tottle were slightly greater than those obtained in this investigation on electron-beam melted columbium but varied with temperature in a similar manner. Tottle's data showed a maximum in tensile strength near 500°C, as did our data on electron-beam melted material, and also showed a small maximum at 300°C. The significance of these maxima will become evident later in the discussion. The tensile properties of cold-swaged and recrys-tallized arc melted columbium are plotted in Fig. 2. It was found that the properties of the recrystallized arc-melted columbium from all three heats showed very close agreement except at temperatures between about 500" and 800°C. A reason for this range of disagreement will be suggested in the discussion. The generally good agreement, however, attests to the ability of cold-working and subsequent recrystal-lization to erase the effects of the three different primary breakdown procedures and to produce nearly equivalent structures in the samples derived from the three different heats. wesse13 reported tensile data on columbium having interstitial impurity contents between those of the

Theoretical and potentiometric model studies have been made of the effect of non-uniform lateral permeabilities on pattern sweep efficiency and production capacity in waterflood and gas-cycling programs. It is shown that a diflerence in directional permeability by a factor of three may result in a sweep efficiency of only 43 per cent for a five-spot pattern or a sweep of either 79 or 38 per cent for a direct line-drive square pattern, depending on the direction of the line-drive flood. Changes in the pattern conductivity varied from about 0.8 to 1.34 over this same permeability variation, depending on the pattern used. It is suggested that measurements be made to determine the possible magnitude and extent of the directional permeability phenomenon early in the field developinent and certainly prior to the initiation of any fluid-injection progmm. INTRODUCTION Irregularities in reservoir sand properties long have been a major difficulty to anyone attempting to explicitly describe the field characteristics of oil production. In particular, it is well known that vertical and lateral permeabilities often differ appreciably; however, the existence of large regions with lateral permeabflity variation is not widely recognized. A number of years ago, extensive studies were conducted by the Secondary Recovery Research Labcratory of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association, primarily on the Bradford field. Johnson and Hughes' reported a permeability trend in the northeast-southwest direction. They indicated that flow in the preferred direction may be 25 to 30 per cent greater in that direction than in the northwest-southeast direction. They also reported that similar effects may be found in other nearby fields. The origin of the permeability variation has been discussed by Griffith Hutchinson' described the results of labora- tory tests on limestone cores, pointing out that per-ferential directional permeabilities were significant in one-half of 10 formations studied and that the average permeability ratio was 16:1. Barfield, Jordan and Moore analyzed the fluid-injection displacement performance in the Spraberry and reported that the effective ratio of permeability parallel to the major axis to the permeability perpendicular to this axis was 144:l and that it inclined along an angle of about 30". To prevent the reduction of sweep efficiency which would normally result from flooding or cycling in such reservoirs, well spacing could be varied from the customary square to a diamond-shaped pattern. Johnson and Hughes' presented a method for determining the desired shape. Another method will be discussed in detail in the next section. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate quantitatively the effect of directional permeability upon the sweep efficiency and production capacity of the five-spot and line-drive well patterns. Information currently in the literature will be applied to this particular problem and augmented by a potentiometric model study. It is stressed that the effects herein discussed may or may not be of great importance because field data on this phenomenon are far too scant to form such an opinion. It is suggested that, if conditions similar to those found by Johnson and Hughes frequently exist (as may well be the case), more consideration cdrtainly should be given to this problem.

The so-called "paraffin dirt" of the Gulf Coast oil fields has been considered an indication of the possible presence of oil and gas, and not a few wells have been brought in solely on the basis of such evidence. In a sense, it may be empirically justified as evidence of the presence of oil or gas, though it cannot be said to be infallible. If the writer is correctly informed, its association with oil and gas was pointed out by Lee Hager some years ago, and while it is commonly mentioned by geologists and operators in conversation, no discussion seems to have found its way into print. The present interpretation is based on laboratory study rather than on field investigation, and is put forth with the hope of stimulating discussion which shall lead to more complete understanding. The term "paraffin dirt" has been applied to soils with a peculiar texture, which has been described as "curdy" or "rubbery." When moist, the material breaks much after the fashion of "green" cheese. It is rubbery under compression, but does not resemble rubber in tenacity or cohesion. When dry, the material ranges from hard clods to a horny mass of high tensile strength. The shrinkage in drying is very great, especially in the hornlike matter. The moist material ranges in color from dark brown in the specimens rich in organic matter to grayish in specimens containing more inorganic matter. All of the specimens studied were readily attacked by molds, which in some cases grew in great profusion on the samples. Samples exhibited a rather characteristic "swampy" or "mucky" odor when wet, and a characteristic odor of humic soils when moist. If the material is brought into suspension in water, very fine sand settles out and may be recovered by successive washing and decantation. The sand is almost entirely quartz, but contains occasional fragments of feldspar—more or less kaolinized and iron-stained. Practically all of the sand passes through a 100-mesh screen and the grains are extremely sharp —possibly below the limit of rounding. A flocculent mud, of clay and organic matter, remains in suspension for days. Some material is taken into solution in the water, imparting a slight tendency to froth when vigorously shaken. The results of partial analyses of four samples of "paraffin dirt," and, for comparison, one of a coastal plain soil are given in Table I.

Three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB,l ZrB2,2,3 and ZrB12, 4 The phase relationships, ranges of stability, and some physical properties of these compounds are described. THE zirconium borides differ considerably from one another, particularly with respect to their relative stabilities at high temperatures in the presence of carbon.4,5 ZrB2 is extremelv stable at all temperatures (to the melting point) in contact with carbon. Both ZrB and ZrB12 tend to decompose at elevated temperatures when carbon is present in excess of about 0.5 pct. ZrB forms ZrB2 and ZrC, and ZrB12 decomposes to form ZrB2 and a boron-carbide phase. In the ZrB12 preparation, boron present in excess of that needed to form ZrB2 reacts with carbon, if present, to form carbides, in preference to forming the higher boride. Similar instability of borides, other than diborides of the transition metals of the 4th and 5th groups of the periodic table, has been reported.5,6 special precautions had, therefore, to be taken to minimize carbon contamination in the preparation of ZrB and ZrB12. Reactions below 1400°C were carried out by heating powdered mixtures of zirconium hydride and boron in quartz tubes in a hydrogen atmosphere. For temperatures above 1400°C, reactions were carried out in graphite molds. Carbon contamination from the molds was minimized by employing extremely rapid heating rates to reduce carbon diffusion into the body of the specimen, and by subsequent "shaving" of sample surfaces that had been in contact with the graphite dies. A heating rate of about 2000°C per min was obtained by heating the dies (by direct conduction), using a current of 40,000 amp. Although this type of heating cycle apparently allowed little time for "homogenization," close approximations to equilibrium conditions were usually obtained as a result of the very strongly exothermic reactions between zirconium hydride and boron at elevated temperatures. Reproducibility of results in repeated runs under varying conditions was taken as a reasonable indication that equilibrium conditions had been effectively achieved. Quenching was accomplished by rapidly immersing the entire die, containing the reaction products, in water. Specimens could also be cooled at controlled rates by adjustment of the rate of flow of water through the water-cooled copper electrodes in contact with the graphite dies.

T HE Tonopah Extension assay office is a two- story, concrete structure on a solid foundation of andesite, situated about 100 yd. from the company's mill, so that it will not be affected by the stamps or the tube-mills; also it will not be affected by under- ground blasting. On the second floor are the mine superintendent's office and drafting and blueprint rooms. On the ground floor are the assayer's office,' mixing room, furnace room, crusher room, chemical laboratory, parting room, store room, and change and shower room for the mine superintendent, assayers, and engineers. The crusher room is outside of the main building, and has four concrete walls, thus eliminating the jar of the crusher; it is so situated that the least possible amount of dust spreads through the main building. An 8 by 10-in. jaw crusher, which crushes to ¼ in., was made by a local foundry. Attached to the top is a small galvanized-iron hopper covered with a ¼ in. screen, on to which the sample is dumped. The fines-pass through the screen into the hopper, while the oversize is dumped into the crusher. The crushed sample and fines from the screen drop down to a set .of splits suspended from an iron rod below the crusher jaws. The small sample is caught below in a small pulp pan. The rejects drop from the splits through a 2-in. pipe on to a bucket conveyor, which dumps into a galvanized-iron hopper in an upper corner of the room. The rejects drop through a 2-in. pipe to a reject bin outside the build- ing. This bin is constructed high enough for a truck to be loaded from it by means of a chute door on the side.

The coal industry of the United States in 1967 had reasons to be both exuberant and concerned about its present and future role in the economy of the country. Continuing a momentum that began in the early 1960's, the industry has moved ahead in providing competitive customized products to strengthen its long-term domestic and foreign commitments, and has maintained with steady progress its position as a major supplier of energy. On the other hand, the industry must overcome air- water pollution and conservation-reclamation problems that have been identified by 1967 legislation. Throughout the year, the industry was characterized as "progressive," "healthy" and "dynamic." To have been termed a "growth industry" in 1967, is an accolade the coal industry can accept with pride. Culminating its efforts throughout the decade, the industry has emerged with a competitive image that is representative of its future strength.

Performance of a high-pressure, vaporizing gas-drive project in a volatile oil reservoir is discussed. The project has been in operation for over 8 years. Present recovery from the over-all displaced portion of the reservoir is 40 percent, and an ultimate recovery of 60 percent is indicated. Calculations reflect an over-all displacement volume of 50 percent for the entire reservoir; therefore, ultimate oil recovery will be 30 percent of the entire reservoir oil originally in place. Laboratory vaporization tests conducted prior to project initiation also are presented and discussed, along with an analytical method of determining stock-tank oil production and gar injection requirements related to over-all volumetric displacement efficiency from these data. Introduction The Shoats Creek field is located in Beauregard Parish, La., in the extreme western part of the state (Fig. 1). Discovered in 1956, the field is productive in three Cockfield sand zones, ranging in depth from 8,000 to 9.000 ft. The upper two zones, 1st and 2nd Cockfield, are condensate-bearing gas reservoirs. The lowest zone, the 5th Cockfield, is a volatile-oil reservoir. Laboratory work conducted on crude oil from the 5th Cockfield zone shortly after field discovery demonstrated that, when contacted with dry gas, signidcant volumes of the oil could be vaporized at reservoir temperature and at an appropriately high reservoir pressure. Further study led to the conclusion that early initiation of a crude vaporization project in the 5th Cockfield zone would be superior economically to other methods of reservoir depletion. Consequently, the zone was unitized and gas injection operations started late in 1958. This paper discusses laboratory work performed in conjunction with the project, and project performance to the present. History of Development The 5th Cockfield zone in Shoats Creek is composed of a thin, very shaly, low-permeability sandstone. Oil accumulation is controlled by a structural trap bounded by faults along the north and west and by a water contact on the southern boundary (Fig. 2). The zone covers a productive area of 1,550 acres at an average depth of 9,000 ft. The net sand section is thin, having a maximum thickness of 10 ft and an average thickness of 5.5 ft (Fig. 3). Average reservoir rock properties, as determined from core analysis are presented in Table 1. Shaliness of the zone is illustrated by the typical electric log of the 5th Cockfield section in Fig. 4. Because of the thinness and poor quality of the sand, the 5th Cockfield was developed on a wide spacing. Eleven completions were made in the zone between 1956 and 1961 for an average density of 140 productive acres per completion, with the majority of wells being dually completed in the 2nd and 5th Cockfield. Average initial potential for producers in the 5th Cockfield was 130 BOPD. Oil from the 5th Cockfield has a stock-tank gravity of 50.5" API; with a bubble-point pressure of 3,515 psia, the oil was highly undersaturated at the original reservoir pressure of 4,675 psia. Pertinent properties of the oil as determined in the laboratory are presented in Table 2. Because of the volatile nature of the crude, laboratory studies of its susceptibility to vaporization, as well as a vapor-liquid phase study, were conducted in addition to a standard PVT analysis. TO those engaged in the purchase and sale of gold- and silverores, mattes and bullion, the frequent differences in the gold- and silver-contents, as reported by different assayers, is a source of much annoyance and expense. The desirability of uniform methods of assay has long been recognized by certain refiners who specify in their bullion-contracts the method to be adopted in assaying the bullion. One large producer of base bullion employs at each refining-works with whom it has a bullion contract an assayer whose duty it is to see that the bullion is sampled and assayed according to contract-specifications. For the assay of gold- and silver-bullion, standard methods are now generally adopted; the reeult being that differences seldom occur. While we cannot hope for anything near perfection from fireassay methods for ores, mattes and base bullion, as carried out cornmercially, such methods may be made to yield results which answer all commercial requirements, and they will probably be retained for obvious reasons. The object of the present paper is to point out some of the sources of error and to show the importance of more uniform methods of assay and close attention to the details of the work. The sources of error in the assay of ores and mattes are: improper sampling; losses of the precious metals during fusion, scorification and cupellation; imperfect elimination of the base metals on the cupel and imperfect extraction of the silver during the parting in nitric acid. It is not the object of the present paper to enter upon the subject of sampling; but a few remarks may be of value. There has been considerable discussion recently in Colorado upon the frequent differences which occur in the assays of Cripple Creek gold-ores, and these differences have been attributed to various causes. An experimental survey has determined the occurrence of Ti2 Ni-type phases in binary and ternary alloys of Ti, Zr, or Hf with first, second, or third long-period transition metals and also in ternary systems in which 0 is the third component. The existence of eleven previously unreported isomorphs is cited and some approximate phase boundaries are given. Lattice parameters are reported for the new phases. The periodic table relationships involved in the occurrence of the phase are discussed. A previous paper' reported the occurrence of a group of Ti2Ni-type phases (structure-type E93) containing Zr in combination with Rh, Ir, and Pt, and Hf in combination with Rh, Pd, Ir, and Pt, and cited evidence to show that all of the Zr phases and the Hf-Pd phase are not binary phases but occur only when 0 is present. More recently one of the present authors found that in the ternary systems of Ti and 0 with Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni the occurrence of the Ti2Ni-type phase could be correlated qualitatively with valency electron concentration, and that the role of 0 appeared to be that of an electron acceptor.' This paper describes the results of a broader investigation of the occurrence of Ti2Ni-type phases in binary and ternary systems containing Ti, Zr, or Hf. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared by arc melting. The purity of the metals Zr, Rh, Hf, Ir, Pd, and Pt was given in the previous paper.' The additional materials used for this work were metals with a minimum purity of 99.9 pct and reagent grade ZrO2, TiO2, Cr2O3, and NiO. Chemical analysis of several alloys in each system indicated good agreement between intended compositions and cast-button compositions. For the heat treatment precautions were taken to avoid oxygen contamination. The specimens were wrapped in Mo foil and sealed in fused quartz tubes at a room temperature pressure of 1 x mm of Hg. These capsules were then annealed in a vacuum furnace at an external pressure of 5 X mm of Hg. Since the major constituent in most of the alloys studied was the brittle Ti2Ni-type phase, Debye-Scherrer patterns with sharp lines could be obtained with powder crushed from the annealed solid samples without being reannealed. Metallographic, X-ray diffraction, and density determination techniques previously described1, 2 were used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-Oand Zr-Pt-O Systems-Figs. 1 through 3 show the approximate boundaries of the Ti2Ni-type phase fields at the temperatures indicated in the ternary systems Zr-Rh-O, Zr-Ir-O and Zr-Pt-0. In each isothermal section the Ti2Ni-type phase field is labeled E and the unidentified binary phase found in the previous work' is labeled ?. The dotted lines, which are not phase boundaries, correspond to the composition (Zr2 B)1-xOx. In each system the Ti2Ni-type phase field is displaced to the high-Zr side of this composition line. However, the departures from Zr2B stoichiometry for the metal components are not as high as Zr3B, as was inferred from the previous work. Lattice parameters of the Ti2Ni-type phases in the alloys shown as triangular data points in Figs. 1 through 3 are given in Table IA. The probable compositions of the Ti2Ni-type phases have been estimated from the isothermal sections. Although there are a few exceptions that probably result from uncertainties in phase boundary location and from the effect of variation of oxygen content, the generalization can be
