Many heats of steel of low carbon value have been known to produce brittle pieces of steel. The brittleness is believed to be due to the impurities located within the grain boundaries. Such brittle steels have been examined with an optical microscope to ascertain the nature and the amount of the impurities present at the grain boundaries. Due to the relatively low resolving power of the optical microscope, the impurities are not visible in fine detail. The writer obtained some sheet steel and proceeded to determine the location of the impurities and to show the application of the electron microscope to the study of grain boundaries. One sample was known to be capable of becoming embrittled, whereas another sample was believed to be much less susceptible to embrittlement. Treatment of Specimens The specimens were embrittled by annealing above the A3 point under mildly oxidizing conditions. One piece of ingot iron could not withstand a 90" bend, whereas another piece of ingot iron was not affected and could withstand a 90" bend. The brittle piece was then annealed at a high temperature in a hydrogen atmosphere. The annealed ingot iron was termed cured and could withstand a 90" bend very easily. The three specimens examined will be designated as brittle, good. and cured in the discussion that follows. Procedure The sizes of the specimens were as follows: one piece of brittle ingot iron-3/8 by 35 in.; one piece of good ingot iron-96 by 1/8 in.; one piece of cured ingot iron-36 by 54 in. The specimens were too small to be polished by hand and therefore were mounted in bakelite. The polishing procedure was carried out in the conventional manner with the use of 1/0 through 3/0 papers, and the final polish was done with alumina on a billiard cloth. The specimens were then etched in a 4 pct solution of picral in alcohol, and then they were examined through an optical microscope. An area was chosen that showed distinct grain boundaries, and an effort was made to keep near this area when pulling the replicas REPLICA TECHNIQIJE The replica technique used in the preparation of the replicas for examination under the electron microscope is described in Electron Metallography.' It consists essentially of the following steps: 1. Obtaining a suitably etched specimen. 2. Applying a swab of ethylene di-chloride on the surface. 3. Applying a formvar solution on the surface. 4. Placing a screen on any desired spot. 5. Breathing on the fornivar layer. 6. Applying scotch tape on the screen and film. 7. Pulling the film and the screen up with the Scotch tape. 8. Separating the screen from the Scotch tape. This replica technique is very similar to the one described by Harker and Shaefer. However, with the added step, the percentage of replicas removed is very much higher regardless of the length of the time from the etching of the specimen to the actual pulling of the replica. The replicas were then shadow cast with manganese at a filament height to replica distance ratio of 1 1/2:7. This produced a very high contrast replica for use in the electron microscope. One of the dificulties encountered with this study was the restricted area of the specimen. The width of the specimens was the same as that of the 200 mesh nickel supporting screen. In order to increase the effective area, the screens were cut down as shown in Fig 1. The arrow indicates the direction in which the replica was pulled. This operation made it possible to obtain a large percentage of good replicas. Fig 3 shows an electron micrograph of a brittle piece of ingot iron and a grain boundary that was polished mechanically. The surface is very rough probably due to the incomplete removal of the flowed layer by the picral etchant. The grain boundary does show evidence of impurities. It was decided to electropolish the specimens to obtain a much smoother surface than the one obtained by mechanical polishing. ELECTROPOLISHING The specimens were cut in half to expose the metal on the back side. The exposed metal had sufficient area to make good electrical contact and electropolishing was carried out easily. The conditions for electropolishing were 0.9 amp, 35 volts, and 25 sec. in an electrolyte composed of 850 cc of ethyl alcohol, 100 cc distilled water, and 50 cc of perchloric acid. Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. Photographs are presented to illustrate the ellipticity developed during superplastic deformation, Fig. 1. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. This value is typical of those observed with superplastic materials. I HAVE lately had occasion to conduct a campaign at the works of the Empire City Company, in Railroad District, Elko County, Nevada, which, if not highly satisfactory, was at least very interesting in a technical point of view, and which I therefore think worthy of communication to the Institute. The lead ores in this district occur in lenticular masses along and near the contact of crystalline limestone with a dioritic porphyry, and consist of argentiferous carbonate of lead and galena, the latter occurring in solid blocks, or in ribbons running through the limestone. Associated with these are silicate, carbonate, and suboxide of copper, and brown and calc-spar. Adding to this, that the proportion of galena in the ore is small, and that no iron pyrites exists in the district, it is at once evident that the ore-mixture is difficult to treat. For a successful reduction by smelting, it would be necessary to introduce into the charge : 1. The proper quantities of sulphur-bearing ingredients, to effect a complete separation of copper and lead ; and, 2. Sufficient silica and iron oxide, to form with the lime and magnesia of the ore, a slag of the required fluidity. The first condition could be fulfilled only very imperfectly, there being no iron pyrites in Railroad, nor in the surrounding districts. The nearest occurrence is in Battle Mountain, whence a supply could not be procured in time. The second condition, i. e., the addition of iron ore and quartz, was easily complied with, there being an abundance of these materials in the vicinity. The furnace of the Empire City Company, is a small shaft¬furnace, with an area of hearth of six square feet, and is supplied with blast by a No. 4 Root blower. In spite of this small size the furnace smelted during this campaign, which lasted 31 days, an average of 28 tons of ore, and 13 tons of fluxes, together 41 tons of charge, per twenty-four hours. The current ejyiciency of aluminum cells was derived from the metal produced over a period of time and the theoretical faradaic yield. The difference in the actual amount of aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of the period must be determined. The weight of aluminum in the cathode was calculated from the dilution of an added quantity of impurity metal. Use of multiple indicator metals, copper, manganese, and titanium, demonstrated that the weight of aluminum in cells can be determined to within 1 pct with routine but careful chemical analyses. Over intervals of the order of 30 days, current efficiencies reliable to within 1 pct can be obtained. INVESTIGATIONS beginning with those of Pearson and waddington ,' through the most recent published work of Georgievskii,9-11 illustrate the direct relationship between the composition of the anode gas and the applicability of analysis of anode gases to the control of alumina reduction cells. McMinn12 noted the lack of an independent method for measuring cell production efficiency over the short term. There is no doubt that changes in the current efficiency are immediately reflected in the composition of anode gases. However, the accuracy of faradaic yields calculated from gas analyses depends upon the degree of interaction between primary anode gas and Carbon.6 A conventional industrial practice of obtaining long-term current efficiency for production units from mass balances and quantity of electricity is generally insensitive to the impact of planned control of any one or more of the influential reduction cell parameters such as temperature, alumina concentration, and mean interelectrode distance. Consequently, there is a real need in the aluminum industry for a procedure to obtain the absolute cell current efficiency over a short term—10 to 30 days—both for the calibration of values obtained from gas analysis6 and for evaluating the effect of controlling specific parameters in the reduction process. The amount of aluminum produced may be determined by considering the cathode pool as a reduction of an impurity metal in aluminum. Analyses over a period will show a decreasing concentration of the impurity due to the accumulation of aluminum solvent. The increase in aluminum inferred from analyses is the amount produced by the cell during the period. Combining weights of the cell aluminum in the cathode at the beginning and end of a specific period, weights of aluminum tapped and the quantity of electricity passed during the interval will yield the current efficiency. Smart,I3 Lange;4 Rempel,15 Beletskii and Mashovets,16 and winkhaus17 have used dilution techniques to determine aluminum inventory in alumina reduction cells. A technique for determining the weight of aluminum in production cells by addition of small amounts of copper to the aluminum cathode was described by smart.13 The precision in values of the aluminum reservoir through dilution of copper in the cathode ranged from about 1 to 3 pct depending upon the quantity of copper added in the range 0.2 to 0.01 wt pct, respectively. Because the method appears so direct and apparently simple, one would not anticipate difficulties in application to industrial cells. The objective of this study was to resolve this problem associated with the trace metal dilution technique for determining the amount of aluminum in a cell. The approach in evaluating trace metal dilution as a basic factor in determining the weight of aluminum in the cell reservoir, and the absolute current efficiency of the Hall-Heroult cell, was to dilute more than one trace metal in the aluminum cathode so that we could discriminate among complications arising from physical mixing, the possibility of separation of intermetallic compounds, loss of the added elements, and chemical detection. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS These experiments are not complex but require standardized procedures. The technique involves addition of the trace metals to the cathode, knowing when these metals are homogeneously distributed in the liquid cathode, timing of the sampling, employing accurate and precise analytical methods, using reliable procedures for monitoring the amount of electricity passed through the cell, and accurate weighing of aluminum removed from the cell during the particular period. More accurate results might be obtained if the increment in concentration of the added indicator metals were of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 wt pct. The method must be applicable to production units and, hence, the contamination of the aluminum minimized. For this reason, the concentration of trace metals in the cathode was kept below 0.07 wt pct and generally at 0.04 wt pct level. Trace quantities of copper, manganese, titanium, and silicon are already present in virgin aluminum and are suitable as additives from electrochemical and analytical points of view. Concentration of silicon is quite dependent upon the characteristics of the raw materials and was not used extensively in this work. Chemical Analyses. All instrumental analyses require calibration against an absolute technique such as a gravimetric, volumetric, or spectrophotometric method which represents the ultimate in sensitivity, precision, and accuracy. Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

Conventional static tests of fluid-loss agents do not realistically simulate conditions in a fracturing treatment. The dynamic tests reported here show that fluid-loss volume is better represented as proportional to time, rather than as the square root of time. This leads to a different equation for fracture area. The leak-off rate increases with increasing shear rate at the fracture wall, but appears to approach a limiting value. Pressure effects are minor. Spurt loss ordinarily is not affected by the flow velocity in the fracture and is inversely proportional to concentration of agent. The filter cake, once it is well established, is resistant to damage by the flow of plain fracturing liquid (without fluid-loss agent). The latter two findings indicate that a treatment employing a high-concentration spearhead followed by plain fluid can offer a more economical treatment under suitable conditions. INTRODUCTION The successful design of hydraulic fracturing treatments depends on accurate knowledge of the fluid-loss properties of the fracturing fluid. Howard and Fast,' in giving the basic equation relating fracture area to fluid and treating parameters, described three mechanisms which might control the rate of fluid leak-off from the fracture. One mechanism usually is dominant in a given well treatment. For each mechanism, the leak-off velocity is inversely proportional to the square root of time, and the proportionality constant is designated as the fracturing-fluid coefficient. For the wall-building type of fluid-loss agent, the coefficient is determined by a filtration test in a pressure cell, usually with a rock wafer or core as the filter medium. In these static tests, the cumulative volume generally is proportional to the square root of time, after an initial spurt volume. The static-fluid-loss test is not representative of the con,-&tions under which a fluid-loss agent performs in a fratturing treatment. The marked difference between the dynamic- and static-fluid-loss behavior of drilling fluids reported in the literature2,3 implies that dynamic testing is also needed with fracturing fluids. We have therefore undertaken a study of the dynamic-fluid-loss behavior of fracturing fluids. The testing apparatus has also afforded opportunity to evaluate the resistance of the filter cake to removal or damage by flowing fluid containing no fluid-loss agent, with and without sand. The results of these studies offer a means for more accurate evaluation of fluid-loss agent performance, and point the way to a "spearhead" fracturing technique which may offer more economical treatment for some wells. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The dynamic-fluid-loss testing method is applicable to any type of wall-building fracturing fluid. The present study aimed first at finding what phenomena are involved, and therefore has been limited in the number of materials tested. All of the results specifically reported herein are for kerosene containing a commercial solid fluid-loss agent, which is commonly used at 50 lb/1,000 gal of oil. Another agent in liquid form, used usually at 20 ga1/1,000 gal oil, has shown all the same phenomena in dynamic tests, and generally the same level of fluid-loss control as the solid agent. The dynamic-fluid-loss core cell used in all tests is shown in Fig. 1. The fracture was simulated by the an-nulus between a 2.03 in. OD sandstone core and the surrounding pipe. Annulus widths of 0.234 and 0.117 in. were used, and the core was 3.5 in. long. The annular geometry provides a uniform fluid velocity and a well-defined shear rate over the entire filtering surface, and permits a large filter area (144 sq cm) in a reasonably compact cell. The leak-off fluid passed into a 0.5 in. diameter axial hole in the core. A hollow steel rod through this hole was threaded into a rounded "streamliner" upstream of the core, and into a mounting stud downstream. The streamliner and the stud had the same outside diameter as the core. In all tests except those where sand was circulated, the mounting stud had protruding rings which constricted the annulus, to minimize any tendency for channeling of the fluid to the side exit port. The ends of the core were sealed by Neoprene, steel and Teflon washers. The leak-off fluid was conducted from the hollow rod to an exit tube, through a metering valve (a fine-pitched needle valve) and a quick-opening toggle valve in series, and into graduated cylinders for volume measurement; Two separate circulating systems were used in the experimental program. The extensive initial testing was done at 50 to 150 Psi. The fluid was circulated by a variable speed Moyno pump, and the flow rate was read by a rota-meter flow meter. Metal-carbon-boron powder mixtures were hot pressed and the resulting specimens were studied by X-ray diffraction. It was found that regardless of the starting combination of the metal, carbon, or boron powders, a metal boride phase was always the major component in these samples. In the absence of carbon the boride phase formed on hot pressing depended only on the amount of boron present. Two new phases of the system Ti-B were found. They are Ti2B and Ti2B5. The existence of a controversial face-centered cubic phase of formula TiB was confirmed. Electrical resistivities were measured for various boride phases. It was found that the diborides are generally better conductors than the monoborides of the same metal. THE carbides and borides of the transition elements have very high melting points, in the range 2500° to 4000°C, and are therefore of interest as high temperature materials. The literature on the stability or chemical reactivity of these carbides and borides is very scarce. Various investigators'-" have demonstrated a relative instability of certain carbide phases in the presence of boron or boron-containing substances. In a recent publication, Glaserl demonstrated the stability of zirconium-boride (ZrB,) in the presence of carbon at temperatures in excess of approximately 2900°C, while during a preliminary investigation of boride phases, Steinitz' concluded that the diborides are stable in the presence of carbon while the monoborides of the fourth and fifth group are not, forming diborides plus carbides instead. Nelson, Willmore, and Womeldorph" have elaborated on the reaction B,C + 2TiC = 2TiB, + 3C, which was known to occur because of a relative instability of B,C and the great tendency towards TiB, formation at relatively low temperatures (approximately 1200°C). A similar study, involving as starting materials TiO, and B,C and resulting in TiB,, was recently described by Honak4, who observed the beginning of an exothermic reaction of a Ti0,-B,C powder mixture, which, when preheated in a hydrogen atmosphere to approximately 950°C, was carried to about 1600 °C by the heat of reaction. To shed more light on reactions of this type (Metal-C-B), the final product apparently always resulting in a boride phase at the expense of a carbide phase," a systematic investigation was started * Boride phases of various metals, as reported to date, are listed in Table I. and the following is an account of some of the results that were obtained. Materials, Preparation of Samples, Testing Methods The raw materials employed for this work consisted of various carbide, boride, and metal powders. as well as of boron and graphite powders. In cases where commercial grades of carbides were considered unsuitable because of low purity or excessive amounts of graphitic carbon, such carbide powders were prepared by this laboratory. The procedure for the preparation of carbide powders (zirconium carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, and niobium carbide) consisted of mixing graphite and the respective metal hydride powders in stoichio-metric proportions and subsequent heating of such mixtures in a hydrogen atmosphere in carbon crucibles. The heating was by high frequency to temperatures ranging between 1700" and 2100°C. The resulting carbide was then comminuted and screened to the desired particle size. ZrB, and TiB, powders were produced by the electrolysis of fused salt baths, according to the method described by Andriex.. The borides of niobium, vanadium, tantalum, molybdenum, chro-ium, and iron were obtained by mixing the respective metal and boron powders in the desired proportions. Such metal-boron mixtures were heated in a high frequency furnace to form boride powders. For each metal-carbon-boron group (Tables I1 through XI) a metal, its hydride, carbide or boride were mixed with carbon, boron or boron carbide powders. The additions of carbon, boron or boron carbide powders to any of these metals or metal compounds were calculated to satisfy a particular carbide or boride phase that according to the literature (Table I) had definitely been established by X-ray diffraction work. Samples of powder mixtures were hot pressed in graphite molds that were heated by direct conduction. The specimen dimensions were approximately 2.5X1X1 cm. Hot pressing temperatures were measured optically and maintained for approximately 30 sec under a constant pressure of about 1.3 ton per sq in. Wherever possible, an attempt to obtain maximum specimen density was made by temperature variation. Electrical resistivity testing was done by measuring potentiometrically the voltage drop over a length of 1.5 cm for a current of 10 amp, at room temperature. During the past year considerable progress was made in the exploitation of Iraq's resources, although no new fields were discovered. The principal development was the completion of the much heralded pipe line from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean, by the Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd., and the beginning of crude exports to Europe on the second of August. Official ceremonies for the opening of the lines took place in January, 1935. The line in itself is sufficient achievement under the existing natural handicaps to deserve a moment's attention. It is 1151 miles long, composed of two independent lines made up mostly of 12-in. with some 10-in. and 8-in. pipe, and extends from Kirkuk westward 156 miles to beyond the Euphrates River as a double line. From that point, near the village of Haditha inside the Iraq border, it bifurcates, one leg going as a single line to Haifa through the British Mandated Territories of Trans-Jordania and Palestine, and the other to Tripoli through the French Mandates of Syria and the Leban(on)ese Republics. The total length of the Tripoli line is 532 miles, of the Haifa line 619 miles. The line leaves Kirkuk at an elevation of 1013 ft., drops to 350 ft. at the Tigris, to 200 ft. at Wadi Tharthar west of the Tigris and again to 300 ft. at the Euphrates, rises to more than 3150 ft. at mile 451 on the central Arabian steppe along the south line and to more than 2500 ft. at mile 466 along the north line. On crossing the rift valley of the Jordan River south of Galilee, it drops abruptly below 850 ft. below sea level, requiring the use of extra heavy 8-in. pipe and a relief station to reduce the pressure. A picked group of American welders, under H. S. Austin, of the Ajax Pipe Line Co., laid the line. It is coated, wrapped, and buried 30 in. beneath the surface in solid rock along much of the route. It crosses four large rivers and wide stretches of alkaline soils. Twelve pumping stations are employed, three of which are double east of the bifurcation. Each single station houses three 500-hp. crude-burning deisel engines flexible-coupled to reciproratirig pumps. PACKARD, Butte, Mont.:-I would like to ask Mr. Braly if he has any information as to the relative efficiency of the sinking pump, using it as he refers to it, discharging the exhaust into the water column or otherwise. MR. BRALY :-I have never gathered any information on that point. It is a question of getting the work done. In driving the shaft, using that method, we find it easier on the men and everything else. In the bottom of the shaft, if you exhaust back into your column, it is a quiet. shaft. Another thing is the freezing: if you are sinking with air in your pump, you will find it is liable to freeze, and in that case as the air is still under compression it will not freeze the pump. The difference is very small if there is any. But, as might be expected, the pump is a little less efficient when exhausting the air into the column. MR. PACKARD :-I suppose all of us know what a pump in the bottom of the shaft is. My experience has been, although I have no figures, that the capacity of a pump is quite considerably decreased if you are pumping, say, from a depth of 200 ft. through a No. 7 Knowles pump, when you exhaust the air into a column, but, on the other hand, it is also my impression that we can raise the water to a little greater distance. I would like to get some figures from somebody who has made actual tests.

(Butte. Meeting, August, 1913.). IN metallurgical circles it is known widely, but somewhat vaguely, that the ease of: reduction of metallic oxides depends largely on the way they have been prepared. It is likewise known that different forms of carbon have different and greatly varying reducing powers. It is the purpose of this paper to show somewhat more definitely and scientifically these facts. Some years ago the writer published an account of pyrometric determinations of the reduction- temperature of zinc oxides variously prepared and of several kinds.1 In said paper it was shown that the temperature it which zinc oxide evolves zinc according to the equation Zn0. +' C = Zn + CO depends upon the ;nature of:., the.' two reacting bodies. The determinations bad a range of accuracy of from 2° to. 6° C.,whereas differences were found to. amount to an extreme. of 90° C. :.86 the differences are real ones and must have, definite cause. The equation of boiling water, (H20)4 = 4 (H2O) has a fixed temperature for equilibrium of 100° C. at 760 mm. pressure. , In general, all equations. reacting e in .the liquid or the gaseous phase have-well-defined constant physical conditions which govern the equilibrium point and reaction velocities. In a reaction where we have one or more solid phases, the temperature conditions requisite for the unbalancing of the stable system are found to vary. These variations are due to the fact that in a solid there is a very complex molecule and it is not, a question solely of the tearing away of two interlocked atoms, but also of the destruction of a complex molecule containing hundreds, or possibly thousands, of smaller molecules.

In 1945, Hollomon' showed that after plastic yielding and prior to necking under simple tension, both ferrous and nonferrous materials are approximated by an equation of the following form: where, a = true stress K = strength coefficient 5 = true strain n = strain hardening exponent If a material is stress free, a plot of log o vs log 6 would be expected to be a straight line, the slope of which is the strain-hardening exponent (n) and the intercept on the ordinate axis for 6 = 1. is the logarithm of the strength coefficient K. It can be easily shown that the strain-hardening exponent in the above equation is equal to the total uniform elongation prior to necking. Thus, one can determine the total uniform elongation prior to necking from such a plot and, as pointed out by C. W. MacGregor, 2 it is the amount of strain prior to necking which determines the extent to which a material may be deep drawn. In the view of the current interest in the fabrication of beryllium shapes, it was thought that a knowledge of the strain-hardening exponent of cross-rolled beryllium sheet would be of general interest. Load-strain data after yielding and prior to necking was taken from the work of Greenspan,3 converted to true stress and true-plastic strain, and plotted on log-log paper as shown in Fig. 1. The value of Young's modulus E for beryllium was taken as 43 . l06 psi. The slope of this plot gave a value of 0.212 for the strain-hardening exponent (n) and the intercept on the ordinate axis a value of 105,000 for K. The total uniform elongation is thus 21.2 pct, in excellent agreement with the value estimated by Greenspan (about 20 pct). Furthermore,

INTRODUCTION In early 1979 Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR) of Brookwood, Alabama approached TMCI Construction, Inc (TMCI) to make a proposal on a program that involved the sinking of up to 10 ventilation shafts of approximately 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter and ranging in depth from 500 to 700 m (1650 to 2300 ft) for the JWR coal mines in Alabama. At this time TMCI was already constructing the first spiral underground bunker (capacity 2000 tons) in North America for the JWR organization at their No. 4 mine in Alabama. The TMCI proposal was based on the use of the mos modern large diameter shaft boring machine rather than sinking the shafts using the conventional drill blast-muck technique. The proposal was made based o: the experiences by the parent company, Thyssen Schachtbau, which has been using this type of machin in Germany for shaft boring since 1971. As a result of the TMCI proposal JWR issued a purchase order to TMCI for the construction of four 6.7 m (22 ft) diameter, concrete lined, unfurnished ventilation shafts ranging in depth from 500 to 700 (1650 to 2300 ft). An order was thus placed with WIRTH Machinen- and Bohrgeraete Fabrik GmbH, in Germany for the manufacture of a model 650/850 E/Sch "Schachtbohrmaschine" (Vertical Shaft Borer = V-mole which arrived on site in Alabama in early 1981. The first V-mole GSB 450/500 was introduced in Germany in 1971 and was capable of enlarging in one step a pre-drilled 1.2 m (4 ft) pilot hole to 4.5 - 5.0 m (14.7 - 16.4 ft). This machine has sunk 9 staple shafts and deepened one surface shaft for a total of 2360 m (7740 ft) of shafts. On the last shaft boring operation in 1978 the machine was converted as an experiment to drill without a pilot hol using a hydraulic pumping system to remove the cutting debris. A second generation machine, the SB VI 500/650, was introduced in 1977 for enlarging the pilot hole to a range of 5.0 - 6.5 m (16.4 - 21.3 ft) diameter. This machine is still in operation and has already drilled well over 2000 m (6500 ft) of shaft. The third generation of V-mole, the SB VII 650/85( for diameters from 6.5 to 8.5 m (21.3 to 27.9 ft) was: commissioned in May 1980 and has been used for two surface shaft deepenings totalling 606 m (1990 ft) with another scheduled for 1982. The main advantages favouring the use of such V-moles were identified as: 1) A reduction in manpower to the crew required in a conventional shaft sinking operation. 2) A considerable reduction in time to complete a shaft compared to conventional techniques. 3) The use of the V-mole eliminates many of the hazards encountered in conventional sinking. Based on the successful performance of the first three V-moles in Germany, Thyssen Schachtbau decided to employ this principle abroad. In 1980 a second machine of the third generation was built and is now operated by TMCI Construction, Inc. in Alabama. The first shaft was completed at the end of 1981 and this paper describes the method of operation including some unique aspects not attempted on prior V-mole operations and some of the statistics arising out of the experiences during the first shaft boring operation. THE NO. 7 MINE FAN SHAFT SITE Jim Walter Resources, Inc. was formed in 1970 to exploit the coal field in Alabama on the southern tip of the Appalachian coal field. The coal reserves amount to around 650 million tons of mainly good quality coking coal of which about 350 million tons are to be extracted over the next 30 years. Shaft sinking and preparatory work began in 1972, and at present 6 mines are producing around 5.4 million t.p.a. Annual production is to expand to 10 million t.p.a. as soon as possible, and the ventilation shafts to be sunk by TMCI play a vital role towards attaining this goal. The first shaft site is located at the No.7 mine, near Brookwood, Alabama. The actual location of the shaft relative to the production shafts is shown on the mine plan (Fig. 1), which also shows the room-and-pillar extraction system used at present. The mine plan further shows the conveyor route used for the muck removal. The geological survey showed that the strata consisted of horizontal layers of mainly sandstone, sandy shale and shale interspersed with several coal seams. The seam being extracted at the No. 7 mine is a combined seam made up of the Blue Creek and Mary Lee seams at a depth of 513 m (1682 ft) and having an average seam thickness of about 2 m (6 ft). At the beginning of September 1980 the surface site preparation and pre-grouting work was completed by JWR, and TMCI was able to commence with Stage I of the shaft sinking program - the drilling of the pilot hole.

The results of an investigation of vanadium-rich V-O solid solutions are presented, indicating the structure and lattice parameters of two solutions, a and ß, and their approximate temperature-composition existence. The a solution is the terminal body-centered cubic one, and contains up to 3.2 atomic pct 0. The ß solution has an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure, is formed at 1270°C, and exists from about 15 to 22 atomic pct 0. From the evidence available, the various phase boundaries have no appreciable temperature dependence. Evidence has been found for a polymorphic transformation in pure vanadium at 1550°C. IN an earlier investigation' dealing with the preparation of pure vanadium by calcium reduction of the oxide, it was found that small amounts of oxygen drastically reduced the ductility of the metal. Because this effect was so marked, it was decided to make a study of the solubility of oxygen in solid vanadium. This report deals principally with this solubility and the nature of the phase relationships in the vanadium-rich region, particularly at temperatures below 1300 °C. However, during the investigation enough data on the V-0 system were obtained to make it appear worthwhile to present a tentative phase diagram up to the composition VO. The only significant prior work found on this system are the contributions of Klemm and Grimm,' and Mathewson et al.3 Klemm and Grimm prepared a wide range of V-O compositions by powder techniques including the compositions VO.l, VO.2, VO.3 and VO4 (9.1, 16.8, 23, and 28.6 atomic pct 0, respectively). The first three compositions were found to consist of a body-centered tetragonal solid solution, while the last also showed lines of VO (NaCl structure). They found that the parameter c, increased and the parameter a, decreased with increasing concentration of oxygen. For their composition VO.27, or about 16.8 atomic pct O, they cite the values a, = 2.948A, c, = 3.53A, and c/a = 1.2. Klemm and Grimm made no attempt to determine the solid solubility limit nor to construct a phase diagram. They did, however, give some data on the homogeneity range of VO, and they proposed a structure for the body-centered tetragonal solid solution; these points will be taken up later. Materials and Preparation of Samples The vanadium used in this investigation was prepared in the laboratory by the method previously mentioned.' A typical analysis is as follows: Fe, 0.007 pct; Si, 0.02; Ca, 0.06; C, 0.224; O2, 0.044; N,, 0.0017; H2, 0.003; and V, 99.34 ±0.3 (assay). The vanadium assay is probably low by about the error given. The impurities total about 0.36 which, if subtracted from 100, gives a purity of about 99.6. At the time material was being prepared for this work no suitable technique was available for melting vanadium without appreciable contamination. The procedure adopted therefore was to cut the calcium-reduced regulii into slices which were then rolled to strip about 0.025 in. thick for oxygen diffusion. Pieces of rolled vanadium of approximately 0.025xY4xl in. and weighing about 0.3 g were suspended in a vertical fused-silica tube which was part of an ordinary gas absorption apparatus. The silica tube was heated by an electric resistance-tube furnace which could be raised around the silica tube or lowered away from it as desired. This apparatus had no novel features which require detailed description. Other than the silica tube and furnace, it consisted of a glass system evacuated by a liquid nitrogen trapped mercury diffusion pump, a mercury-operated gas burette, a McLeod and a Pirani gage, and a mercury manometer. It was also equipped with suitably located stopcocks for isolating various parts of the system; the vacuum ordinarily attained was between 10" and 10-6 mm of mercury. Oxygen generated by decomposing MnO2 was passed through anhydrous magnesium perchlo-rate before introducing it into the gas burette and thence to the absorption chamber.

In my last report on Petroleum in Burma and India1, details were given of production and development up to 1932. It was pointed nut, that the only statements available for Burma were those published officially by' the Government of India in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India), which are issued about 10 or 11 months after the close of the year. Operations in Burma are almost entirely in the hands of three companies—the Burmah Oil Co., the British Burmah Petroleum Co. (with its subsidiary, the Rangoon Oil Co.) and the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co.—and these companies preserve a policy of secrecy, so that details are not available of new wells, depth, wells abandoned, or of other figures, except in so far as the Government considers it advisable to publish the information in its possession. GeneRal Developments in 1933-1934 As predicted in 1933, there have been no spectacular developments and no new fields have been discovered. Nor are there any new indications of a likelihood of fresh discoveries. The policy of extremely careful exploitation. has been continued and intensified; production is being maintained at an almost steady level and can be so maintained for many years to come—indeed, it is the policy of the leading company to permit refinery and local market requirements to dictate the production required. Contrary to experience in practically every other part of the world, India has shown a slightly decreased demand for petroleum products—especially kerosene, but also for gasoline. The increased use of electricity would explain the lower demand for kerosene, but the falling off in the demand for gasolinc can only be attributed, according to the Chairman of the Burmah Oil Co., to the depression and to the incidence of heavy taxation. In India (including Burma) as a whole, production was 305,018,751 Imperial gallons in 1931 (8,714,822 U. S. barrels); 308,606,031 Imp. gal. in 1932; 306,009,022 in 1933 and is estimated at 308,000,000 in 1934.

Advancement in engineering in the refining industry during 1933 might be likened to the jagged flame of a poor wick-test kerosene—a few outstanding high spots, but not broadly spectacular. Economic conditions were unsatisfactory for the first six or eight months, but the improvement in the latter part of the year had some immediate effect in stimulating new designing and building. The national legislative program involving the industry drew the attention of executives away from petroleum technology to some extent. The National Recovery Act, and its offspring, the Petroleum Code, demanded deep and continued study to put the machinery into smooth motion. From a purely technical engineering stand, therefore, the emergency measures might be considered a temporary brake on progress. The ultimate effect, if the whole industry can get back "out of the red," may well be a more than expected advance. Of course, petroleum technologists and engineers, including both those engaged within and those busy in designing and building for the industry, continued their efforts, and much of the results of their work will undoubtedly see the light of day under the improved economic conditions, which bid fair to stay with us. There was little improvement during 1933 in atmospheric distillation, sweetening processes, or furnace design, but experimentation during the year on these subjects may materialize into distinct advances. The trend toward compact distilling and fractionating equipment, especially in the Appalachian district, deserves noting. A number of refineries in that district replaced obsolete shell still units with up-to-date tube stills and efficient fractionating towers, both for the better separation of lubricating fractions from the crude and for improving the boiling range of the gasoline. A number of small skimming and topping plants in flush fields, such as East Texas, which felt the pinch of production control, were forced to shut down, but the stronger among them are consolidating their positions by installing cracking equipment and in some cases more modern crude-distillation units. As HEAT is the controlling factor in all smelting operations, it will be .most helpful to make a new set of calculations on the basis of a .unit of fuel burned at the tuyeres to carbon monoxide. This ties together the only two factors in this operation that seem to be constant with respect to each other-the fuel at the tuyere and the air or its oxygen content. If our usual smelting operations, using natural air heated to reasonably obtainable temperatures, furnish sufficient heat above this critical temperature for the purpose, it is doubtful whether additions of oxygen will be of marked benefit. A unit of fuel will not produce a single heat unit more if burned with pure oxygen than if burned with natural air and less heat will be available per unit of fuel by the amount of heat that is carried in by the preheated nitrogen in the natural air of the blast. This is more readily apparent if considered in connection with a heat balance sheet per unit of fuel at the tuyere. The heat available in the stack, as shown by the committee's report, is less by reason of the lower fuel consumption per unit of output assumed in this calculation. The balance sheet for enriched air shows a shortage of the amount of heat usually carried in with the blast; also a lack in the hearth of sufficient heat to melt the 18 per cent. additional metal and slag and in the shaft to the extent of the shaft heat required to heat the 18 per cent. additional stock to the melting point. These heat deficiencies are provided for by the largely increased conversion of carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide, which is assumed, as shown by the following figures: Calculation for natural air: Carbon dioxide 18.4 per cent. (after having eliminated the carbon dioxide from limestone) and 20.8 per cent. of carbon monoxide. Calculation for oxygen-enriched air: Carbon dioxide 28.4 per -cent. and carbon monoxide 23.2 per cent. (no carbon dioxide from stone as lime is charged instead).

THE following notes are presented in an endeavour to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces used in the treatment of materials that are too valuable to allow any great amount of metal absorption by the brick. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of. slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and span badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chronic brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spill shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces; those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satin-, factory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick.

If 1929 witnessed a growing realization on the part of the oil industry that supply must be balanced against demand, 1930 proved conclusively that excessive inventories constitute a price depressant even with balanced conditions. Increased attention was certainly paid to economic considerations last year, and the achievement of holding daily crude production, with a constantly mounting potential, to levels 500,000 bbl. below the output of the summer before, deserves special mention. The ill-advised accumulation, however, of gasoline stocks, at least 10,000,000 bbl. larger than necessary, nullified the restraint exercised by the producers and finally necessitated drastic downward price revisions. An event of special significance was the appointment by the Federal Oil Conservation Board, last March, of a temporary Committee on Petroleum Economics that attempted a forecast of demand, an estimate of supply, and an allocation of the latter between the principal producing states. Thus for the first time was an economic program for an entire basic industry drafted by an independent body under the auspices of the Federal Government. The report was widely discussed and generally approved, but its schedules were not adopted by the refining division nor by oil producers in the State of Texas until too late to contribute to the industry's prosperity during 1930. If the restraint of November had been exercised in May a profitable year might have been the result: The gasoline price war in California during June, however, illustrated the point that even with a fairly sound statistical position insistent pressure to expand normal marketing outlets must result in losses to all concerned. The balanced program so painfully attained by producers must be maintained by refiners and distributors to be completely effective. Again in November the Federal Oil Conservation Board, acting on the request of the directors of the American Petroleum Institute, called its Committee on Petroleum Economics back into existence to prepare a new estimate for the next six months. An economic program adopted in advance of the winter period of accumulating inventories may aid this large and essential industry toward the profits to which it is entitled

PERHAPS of all the scientific economic questions which have been claiming the attention of capitalists, metallurgists, manu-facturers, directors of public utilities, and the general public of America, during the last few years, none have been of more importance than the one relating to the wear and safety of steel rails. The discovery of the Bessemer process made possible modern railway development. In that growth, as has generally happened in all progressive movements, ill its department have not remained equally balanced. Iron rails permitted the construction of roadways for the passage of power-driven vehicles. In time the speed and weight of such carriages proved too much for the wearing-qualities of the rails, and the limit of railway capacity seemed to have been reached. Bessemer made his invention, which was soon perfected and developed, especially as related to steel rails, and thereby increased the limit of capacity, acid vastly greater railway progress was, made possible. The Siemens-Martin open-hearth process followed, and was later supplemented by the Thomas-Gilchrist basic improvement. For a time the Bessemer steel rails of commerce Were, more than equal to all that was asked of them, but this did not long continue, as evidenced by the records in our Transactions. Revolutionary changes occurred in the industrial world, and in no part of it more than in steel-rail manufacture. Great and powerful commercial combinations were made, whose financial resources made possible the supplanting of the then most efficient blast-furnaces, steel-works, mid mills, by others of theretofore unimagined capacity. Old traditions and practices of steel-making were wiped away, and, in too many cases, output was apparently the chief aim, with the result that much dissatisfaction with the wear and safety of rails was felt by railway officials, and the general public was concerned as to its safety when traveling. Garth Crosby has written an excellent geologic description of the deposits surrounding the Gem stocks in the Coeur d'Alene district. The ore deposits in the area of the Gem stocks may hold the key to the age and mineralization history of the entire Coeur d'Alene district. A recent isotopic study10 of the Coeur d'Alene district in this laboratory illustrates that a classical geologic interpretation of these deposits, with its implications for the whole district, may lead to erroneous conclusions. For this reason it seems pertinent to submit a summary of these results and an interpretation of the mineralizing history of the Coeur d'Alene districts. Pitchblende from the Sunshine mine has been dated as 1100-1200 million years (m.y.) by Kerr and Kulp,11 and Eckelmann and Kulp.12 This pitchblende is known to predate the major sulphide introduction in the Sunshine mine, but it clearly follows the metamorphism and folding of the Belt Series. Recently, Goldich (personal communication) dated sericite from the Belt rocks as 1200 m.y. by the potassium-argon method. This date establishes a minimum Belt age if the sericite is of metamorphic origin and a maximum age if detrital. The Belt Series, therefore, is not latest Precambrian. Lead isotope ratios of galenas have been measured and model ages calculated by Bate, et all3 for the Sunshine mine, Farquhar and Cummingl4 or the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, and Cannonl6,18 for a few other deposits in the district. Galenas from similar deposits in Southern British Columbia have been measured by Bate, et al,23 Farquhar and Gumming,11 and Wanless and Leech." The new work in this laboratory includes leads from ten widely scattered mines north and south of the Osburn fault, and through a vertical distance of over 5000 ft (Star mine). Included in this group are the Hercules, Sunset, and Mountain Goat mines, which are adjacent to the Gem stocks. In addition, galenas from stringers which cut the Gem stocks in the Success and Sunrise mines and the Hercules hanging wall dike in the lower western portion of the Hercules mine, were included in the study. All of the above leads, except one, give model ages of 1300-1400 m.y. for the time of segregation from the parent material. The concordance of the common lead and U-Pb ages, the great horizontal and vertical uniformity of the lead ratios, the sulphur ratios of two Sunshine mine galenas and three galenas from the Edith, Page, and Hercules mines indicating average crustal sulphur, and the U23/Pb204 ratio inferred for the original lead environment, indicate that the entire mineralization of the Coeur d'Alene-British Columbia base metal belt was derived from a deep source and emplaced in the Precambrian. One sample of galena from sulphide stringers cutting the North Gem stock at the Sunrise Prospect mine gave a modern (i.e., Tertiary) lead ratio. This mine is located at the northern tip of the stock. The presence of modern lead suggests mobilization of some rock lead during the intrusion of the Gem stocks and their outliers.
