A facilities success or failure of doing well during a regulatory inspection is typically measured by the number and type of citations that result, and financial liability resulting from those citations. The success of a facility during an inspection depends on several factors including, the preparation prior to an inspection, behavior and activities during and inspection, and finally, action taken following the inspection. This paper contains suggestions for improving inspection results and establishing an attitude of compliance at manufacturing and mining facilities.

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate. The teaching of geophysics in Canada at the present time presents a variety of approaches to the subject, and the different paths adopted imply, in turn, an uncertainty in the minds of some educators as to the role this science is to play in the future progress of geology, and a hesitancy to commit themselves to foster its development. The pedagogical attitudes vary from a whole-hearted acknowledgment that the science of geophysics is fundamental to the understanding of terrestrial phenomena (including, of course, geological processes) to a hesitant immersion of the toe to test the water's temperature (which is, of course, essentially a geophysical experiment) before deciding whether or not the time is ripe for total immersion. The present discussion has been organized in the hope that it will help to clarify the roads to geophysics and assist educators in making a more understanding choice of the best paths for them to follow, according to their particular requirements and objectives. Before proceeding further, however, it is necessary to define the term geophysics and circumscribe the field it covers. In the first place, it should be emphasized that geophysics is NOT confined to the art of geophysical prospecting. The popularization of geophysics has unfortunately engendered a general misconception of the word, and consequently a tendency to ignore the wider meaning of the term. Etymologically, geophysics means the physics of the earth. It is so understood by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics and the various geophysical societies which adhere thereto. To them, geophysical prospecting is but a very small field indeed, which they consider had best be left to engineering and prospecting organizations.

"This paper describes the development and some typical applications of Wemco's large-capacity flotation machines, the No. 120 and the No. 144, with volumes of 300 and 500 cubic feet, respectively. During the 1960's, it became obvious that low-grade orebodies would be mined at high tonnage rates - plants and grinding mills would be larger, which would create a demand for larger flotation equipment. To meet this demand, Wemco developed a single-mechanism, 300-cubicfoot cell, having five times the volume of the standard No. 66 cell. The average production rate of the No. 66 cell on porphyry copper ore was 100 tpd per cell; and it was our intention that the No. 120 (300-cu. ft) cell would handle 500 tpd per cell, with at least equal metallurgical results and power consumption per ton. The success and industry acceptance of the No. 120 cell has since led to the development of a larger cell, the No. 144, having a volume of 500 cubic feet."

Radioisotope X -ray techniques of analysis for nickel have been tested in laboratory and plant trials. In the laboratory tests. a comparison was made of radioisotope and conventional analyses for nickel in solid s samples taken from streams of a nickel concentrator. Coefficients of variation of 1.7% for feed and concentrate samples , and equal to 10% for final tailing samples, were obtained. Continuous determination of nickel in final tailing slurries was demonstrated in a trial lasting 20 days at a nickel concentrator (Western Mining Corporation), nickel being determined with a standard error of 0.036% Ni in the slurry solids within the range of 0.24 to 0.68% Ni. This error, obtained by comparison of on-stream probe analyses with assays of samples taken from the stream, includes errors in sampling and assay by conventional techniques.

Agglomeration has as main objective to form a uniform and highly permeable heap for leaching. An inaccurate dosage of moisture during agglomeration leads directly to poor agglomerate quality and segregation of particle sizes during stacking. This causes a heterogeneous distribution of the leach solution inside the heap which invisibly and practically permanently affects the recovery. Unfortunately, only when this becomes serious and the mineral contains an excess amount of fine particles and/or clays then the poor permeability of the pile becomes obvious. This paper is based on the experience of Minera Cerro Verde in the development and application of a quantitative method to control moisture during agglomeration. As the amount of fine particles/clays varies, the quantity of moisture has to be altered in real time. The measurement of agglomerate electrical conductivity is used for it. This concept is based on the sharp change seen in conductivity when the mineral passes its absorption limit. A liquid conductive film then begins to form over the surface of the particles, which leads to the formation of agglomerates through liquid bridges, which are also electrical bridges. Moisture is adjusted to reproduce a value of conductivity established previously and is the guiding parameter. Moreover, moisture amount added to reach this conductivity parameter provides information about the fines/clays relative content for best leaching management.

"1.1. WHAT ARE AGREEMENTS AND HOW ARE THEY FORMED?In order to have an agreement, at common law, there must be an offer, acceptance of that offer, and consideration passing between the parties. In addition, the material terms (i.e. the basics or substance) of the agreement must be discernible, preferably by means of documentation. Although these concepts may appear simple and straightforward, the law relating to them is voluminous and complex. Some brief comments are worthwhile.• Offer/acceptance: Both offer and acceptance should be in writing, but they need not be. The actions, conversations, and/or correspondence of the parties may constitute either or both of them. Notwithstanding, the local law or practice of a jurisdiction will impose some specific requirements for certain types of agreements. If these requirements are not met, the agreement may be unenforceable. For example, Ontario’s Mining Act requires transfers of unpatented mining claims to be evidenced in writing and recorded.1• Consideration: Consideration is usually thought of as being money, but it can be virtually anything, even “the premises” (i.e. the mutual covenants or promises contained in the agreement itself). In addition, if one party, relying upon the offer of another, does something to his detriment, then the doing of the act can be considered to be an acceptance of the offer and, under the legal concept of “detrimental reliance”, can also be consideration. Whether or not detrimental reliance exists will depend upon the circumstances of each case.2• Material terms: The requirement that the material terms of an agreement must be discernible does not mean that all of the terms of an agreement must be documented or even have been considered, just the basic or material ones. In addition, it will be up to a judge to decide what is material – not necessarily the parties. In order to establish the material terms, a Court may look at all relevant documentation and may hear oral evidence. It will resist “writing the agreement”"

"A set of experimental batch leaching tests studied the effect of pH, time, temperature, and stirring speed on the relative Cu, Co, Ni, and Fe leaching yields of an oxidized copper-cobalt ore sample in an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution. The results were statistically analyzed and modelled using the structural equation modelling method. Models showed that Cu, Co, and Ni leaching yields were strong functions of the leaching time and leaching temperature, whereas the Fe leaching yield depended on the leaching temperature, stirring speed, and pH. Under optimum leaching conditions yields were 99.8% Cu, 82.4% Co, 91.3% Ni, and 30.6% Fe.RÉSUMÉ Une série d’essais expérimentaux de lixiviation en bâchée ont été menés pour étudier l’effet du pH, de la durée d’attaque, de la température et de la vitesse de brassage sur les rendements relatifs de lixiviation du cuivre (Cu), du cobalt (Co), du nickel (Ni) et du fer (Fe) d’un échantillon de minerai de cuivre-cobalt oxydé dans une solution aqueuse d’acide chlorhydrique. Les résultats ont été analysés et modélisés statistiquement à l’aide de la méthode de modélisation par équation structurelle (SEM, de l’anglais structural equation modelling). Les modèles ont montré que les rendements de lixiviation du Cu, du Co et du Ni dépendaient énormément de la durée d’attaque et de la température de la lixiviation ; le rendement de lixiviation du Fe, quant à lui, dépendait de la température de la lixiviation, de la vitesse de brassage et du pH. As outlined within the Denison Mines Corp’s (“Denison”) Pre-Feasibility Study ("PFS") completed in late 2018, additional work is required to increase confidence and reduce risk associated with the application of the In-Situ Recovery (“ISR”) mining method at the Phoenix deposit, located on the Wheeler River Uranium Project (“Wheeler River” or the “Project”) in northern Saskatchewan. The successful application of ISR in any geological environment largely hinges on three fundamental requirements, 1) permeability (of the deposit), 2) containment (of the mining solution) and 3) leachability (of the mineralization). Denison has designed several staged technical programs to progressively reduce risk associated with these requirements as the Company advances the Project toward a Feasibility Study (“FS”) and Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”). This paper will discuss the scope and results of certain technical programs being undertaken as the Company aims to develop the first ISR mining operation in the Athabasca Basin.

"L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

"To characterize noise and vibration sources of different types of mining equipment used in underground mining, the authors performed a study in eight Quebec mines on 28 pieces of equipment. This paper presents the procedure followed to select the equipment to be evaluated, and the low-cost acquisition system developed to perform multichannel time-domain data acquisition in harsh environments. It also presents the results obtained for the noise level produced by the equipment and for handarm and whole-body vibration exposures.RÉSUMÉ Dans le but de caractériser les sources de bruits et de vibrations de divers équipements miniers utilisés sous terre, les auteurs ont étudié 28 équipements dans huit mines du Québec. L’article présente la procédure suivie pour choisir les équipements à évaluer ainsi qu’un système multicanal à faible coût développé pour acquérir des données dans des environnements difficiles. Il présente aussi les résultats obtenus pour les niveaux de bruit produit par les équipements et pour les expositions main-bras et du corps entier aux vibrations."

Great advances have been made in rubber-lined pumps for the pumping of mill pulps. The Canadian Allis Chalmers alone report ov.er 300 such pumps put into service during the past four years. Pumps in which both the casing and the impeller are rubber covered have proved most economical in handling the usual run of mill pulps, effecting large savings in power, maintenance, and shutdown costs. For the handling of pulps containing comparatively large, sharper edged /articles, rubber-lined casings with hard iron impellers have been developed by the pumping departments of Hollinger and Noranda. These rubber-iron combination pumps show an appreciable reduction in overall pumping costs as compared with the all-rubber and the all-iron pumps. The power efficiency is lower in rubber-iron than in all-rubber pumps but higher than in the all-iron pumps, with lower replacement costs due to the cheap iron impellers used. Where continuous operation is essential, however, and duplication of units to take care of shutdown time for replacement of parts is not within the expenditure budget of the company, all-rubber pumps are being used t0 a greater extent. As in all items pertaining to milling operations, the economics of the situation must be studied as closely as the technical details, to arrive at the most advisable practice.

In this study, to confirm the effect of depletion attraction on the flotation, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of the depletion attraction force on flotation. While varying the concentration of the depletion agent (polyethylene glycol), three different systems are studied: pure malachite, pure silica, and a 1:1 mass ratio of malachite and silica binary system. We find that recovery increases significantly as the concentration of the depletion agents increases for all three systems, as the depletion agent facilitates the adsorption of the particle on the bubble surface. However, the recovery suddenly decreases in a certain concentration range, which corresponds to the onset of the decreased surface tension when high concentrations of the depletion agent are used. This non-monotonic overall recovery trend implies the surface adsorption of the depletant on a surface. The decreased surface tension of the air/water interface suggests that the recovery rate is lowered due to the adsorption of the depletion agent to the bubble surface, acting as a polymer brush. Based on our observations, we conclude that the depletion force can greatly improve particle adsorption, as predicted in the accompanying theory paper, while simultaneously the adsorption of the depletion agent on the bubble surface plays an important role because it hinders particle adsorption. We also perform experiments in the presence of a small amount of a collector, sodium oleate. An extremely small amount of the collector leads to the increase in the overall recovery, which eventually reaches nearly 100 percent. Nevertheless, the grade worsens as the depletant provides the force to silica particles as well as target malachite particles.

The equilibrium solubilities of gibbsite, Al(OH)3, and boehmite, A1OOH, have been extensively studied in our laboratory from 30 to 90°C, and 100 to 300°C, respectively, to ionic strengths of 5 mol.kg-1 (NaC1) over a wide range of pH. The resulting solubility constants have been treated with consistent empirical models that incorporate appropriate experimental data taken from the literature. These studies were initiated in part to understand and quantify scale formation in geothermal fields as a result of fluid re-injection from electric power generating plants. Most of the experimental results were obtained through application of a unique potentiometric method that allows for rapid, precise measurement of the in situ pH and allows the approach to equilibrium to be monitored from under- and super-saturation. The experimental program was extended to deal with more basic solutions (e.g., five molal NaOH), in which the dissolution of boehmite was measured for application to the refining of bauxite by the Bayer process. More recent results in strong caustic solutions at temperatures below 90°C were obtained to investigate the dissolution of aluminum-containing sludge from holding tanks at the Savannah River waste reprocessing site. In this case the solubility enhancing effects (kinetic and equilibrium) of triethanolamine were also established and quantified. Finally, potentiometric solubility experiments were conducted (50°C in 0.l mol-kg-1, NaCl) on aluminum alloy sheets to identify mainly the nature of the aluminum oxide/hydroxide surface layer formed under these conditions.

"In this study, laboratory flow tests were conducted on 2-D artificial rock fracture network models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches. Three models with different intersecting angles of 60°, 90° and 120° were tested using both dye solution and distilled water. Constant flow rates were imposed on one inlet, and the flow patterns in the fracture intersections were captured by using a CCD camera. The test results were compared with the predictions made by numerical simulations that solved the Navier-Stokes equations. The results revealed that when Reynolds number (Re) is as low as less than 1, the intersecting angle has negligible influence on the flow rate of each branch and the flow patterns within a fracture intersection. As the interesting angle ? and Re (e.g., from 10 to 200) change, the normalized flow rates of different outlet branches change significantly, due to the inertial effect of fluid flow. These changes could be represented by a series of mathematical expressions involving Re and ?, which could be applied to fracture network models to improve their prediction accuracy on hydraulic properties (e.g., permeability and breakthrough curves of particles) of rock masses. INTRODUCTIONCoupled stress, flow, heat and mass transport are the corner stone subjects for many geoscience and geo-engineering disciplines, such as geological disposal of radioactive waste and geothermal energy exploitation. Many outstanding issues need to be investigated to enhance the knowledge on these subjects, and specifically more in-depth research in testing and modeling of the fluid flow in fractured rock masses is needed. In recent years, discrete fracture network (DFN) models have been extensively used to study the fluid flow and mass transport behaviors of fractured rock masses (e.g., Min et al., 2004; Zhao et al., 2011). In these models, each fracture is usually represented by a parallel-plate model, in which fluid flow exactly follows the cubic law. Therefore, comparative flow rate in each outlet branch of an intersection in these models only depends on its aperture. In reality, due to the surface roughness of fractures, the magnitude of mechanical aperture is usually larger than that of the hydraulic aperture of each fracture (Li et al., 2008; Xiong et al., 2011), and abundant flow patterns could exist in an intersection, influenced by its geometry, varying with changing Reynolds number (Re) (Kosakoswski & Berkowitz, 1999). Recent studies have also revealed that different mixing patterns might exist at a fracture intersection, bounded between streamline routing model and complete mixing model, that determine the final distribution of solutes in fractured rock masses (Johnson and Brown, 2001; Park et al., 2001). Numerical simulation has been the principal method adopted in previous studies, and the studies conducting flow tests on intersected fractures are less reported (Wilson & Witherspoon, 1976; Johnson and Brown, 2001). In this study, laboratory flow tests and numerical simulations by solving the Navier-Stokes equations were conducted on 2-D models containing a single intersection constituted by two inlet and two outlet branches, intersected at different angles. The main objective is to study the influence of intersecting angle on the flow behavior of the intersected fractures and the variations of flow patterns and fluid redistribution in each model along with the changes of the Re and the intersecting angle ?. The influence of surface roughness was not considered."

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

"There has been a number of new developments in British Columbia's industrial minerals field over the past few years. Several new industrial operations were started to diversify the line of British Columbia mineral production by magnesite, perlite and fuller's earth. Industry activities and geological projects have identified occurrences of rare earth minerals, niobium, kaoline, fireclay and zeolites. The Geological Survey Branch significantly improved its database on industrial minerals. New geological concepts based on recent work are opening a number of new opportunities f or further industrial minerals' exploration and development in British Columbia.IntroductionTraditionally, the value of industrial minerals produced in British Columbia in any given year comprises between 100/0and 15% of the combined value of minerals, coal, petroleum and natural gas. Over the years a wide variety of industrial minerals has been produced , often with different levels of marketings success. For some products, such as dimension stone and clay or shale products, initial strong demand gradually dissipated; for others such as asbestos and magnesite, new discoveries or new industrial activities created demand and new markets . In some cases, such as fluorite , talc, pyrophyllite and perlite, wider use has been prevented by small size, poor quality or remote location of the deposits. Also, British Columbia , with 2.6 million inhabitant s, provides only a limited market and the industry therefore has to look beyond provincial borders."

Over the past decade, the copper industry has been through an extended downturn followed by several years of sustained high copper price. A number of new technologies have been developed over the past 10 years aimed at reducing costs by decreasing energy, labor, and materials requirements, or by increasing metal recovery. The energy intensity of different copper extraction routes and different technologies varies considerably and this has a significant impact on the economics of extraction. Based on average ore grade materials, the total energy for the extraction of copper typically varies from about 24-26 MJ/lb (6.7-7.2 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, milling, flotation, smelting and refining route to about 14¬16 MJ/lb (3.9-4.5 kWh/lb) for the mining, crushing, heap leaching, solution extraction and electrowinning route. New technology developments are providing opportunities for significant reductions in energy consumption for copper extraction, representing energy savings up to 20-25% in some cases. In addition, in many cases, these new technologies have introduced environmental, safety and health benefits over the incumbent technology. Some of these technology developments have been more successful than others, and many hold great promise for application in the coming decade. This paper provides an overview of the technology developments that have occurred, and explores the underlying reasons behind successful implementation.

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.

"AbstractProduction from the Excelsior Reservoir has amounted to approximately one million barrels. This production has caused a 'Pressure •drop of 10 p.s.i. from the original pressure of 1,245 p.s.i.g. Volumetric balance calculations indicate that the pool as being produced by a water drive whose strength is •probably unsurpassed in Western Canada. It has also been shown by 'unsteady state' calculations that the reservoir will still be above the saturation pressure of 915 p.s.i.g. at the time of depletion. The average permeability of the producing formation is approximately 1,000 millidarcys and, consequently, well draw-downs are very low. The field is essentially a bottom-water drive and calculations have shown that gravity drainage will greatly assist the recovery of oil. Water flooding data on several cores •have placed the flushing efficiency at •approximately 50 per cent, which indicates a recoverable oil-in-place of 17.7 million stock tank barrels. Calculations and field data indicate that the MER for the early life of this field is probably as high as 8,000 to 10,000 stock tank barrels per day.IntroductionTHE EXCELSIOR NISKU oil reservoir is located about twenty miles northeast of Edmonton. The field was discovered in November, 1949, by Imperial Excelsior N.o.1 well, in Lsd. 13, Sec. 3, Twp. 56, R. 22, W. 4, at a depth of 3,850 feet.Since discovery, development has continued on a 40~acre spacing pattern. At the end of 1951, drilling over approximately 80 per cent of the estimated productive area of 1,680 acres had established 32 we1ls capable •of production.
