Based on the investigation and study of the topography, microstructure and composition of the buildups which form in the surface of carbon sleeve in continuous annealing furnace for lowand medium-grade non-oriented silicon steel produced by CSP process, combined with production process of silicon steel, the mechanism and major causes for forming buildups of carbon sleeve are discussed from the factors such as CSP process, the quality of carbon sleeve and so forth. Meanwhile, some countermeasures to reduce the formation of the buildups are put forward.

"Coal, as the main energy in ferrous metallurgy, is consumed on a large scale and great amount of CO2 is emitted likewise. In this paper, a model, based on carbon balance, was developed for CO2 emission analysis, with data obtained from a typical integrated steelworks in China. The result shows that, CO2 emissions increase almost constantly with the growth of steel production. However, coals of different classes and product variety in the steelworks exerted an influence on CO2 emissions. Furthermore, three scenarios, including natural gas instead of coal for power generation, EAF process partly replacing integrated steelmaking, and feasible techniques applied to achieve lowest process energy consumption (FLPEC), were assumed to seek possible ways of carbon emission reduction. The result proves that the second scenario is most effective. If 40% of the steel product could be from EAF process, CO2 emissions would be reduced by 45.07%.IntroductionGlobal warming has become a global environmental problem, which is generally caused by excessive emission of greenhouse gases, such as CO2, generated from human activities and industrial processes. It is estimated that about 7% of global CO2 emissions was from iron and steel industry. Further, if the ore and coal’s mining and transportation are included, the CO2 emissions would reach 10%[1]. In general, the relationship between energy saving and CO2 emission reduction is positive correlation. However, in iron and steel enterprises, due to different types of energy resources like coal, heavy oil, natural gas, the consumption of which will generate different amount of CO2, are used, different energy consumption structure in iron and steel enterprises will lead to difference of CO2 emissions.In order to assess the CO2 emission reduction potential of China’s steel industry, Ke Wang etc.[2] developed a model using LEAP software to generate 3 different CO2 emission scenarios for the industry from 2000 to 2030. LEAP is a scenario-based software tool for integrated energy-environment and greenhouse gas mitigation analysis. The amount of CO2 emissions was obtained by the following equation:"

Recycling of materials from lithium-oxyhalide batteries is a complex task, since the dismantling of batteries is associated with many hazards. The electrolyte and the lithium anode metal are extremely reactive in the presence of water or water vapor. Therefore, the dismantling process is a complex task. In this process, the lithium battery is electrically discharged, then frozen in liquid argon, and cut into small size pieces. These are fed into an incinerator, where the unreacted portion of lithium metal, thionyl chloride, plastic separators and carbon paste are decomposed and burned to gaseous products. The aluminum, iron (steel) and nickel pieces are recovered as saleable scrap metals. The off-gases are scrubbed with an alkaline sodium carbonate containing solution. The clean gases are released to the environment. The particulate mater recovered from the scrub-suspension would be available as additive to the cement industry . The recycling of battery decomposition products improves the economic viability of the disposal processes. Work is in progress to develop safe handling, processing and recycling large size lithium batteries.

Certain steel mill wastes contain significant amounts of zinc oxide due to the use of galvanized scrap during the steel making process. Typically electric arc furnace (EAF), and basic oxygen process (BOP) flue dusts contain 20 to 30% zinc oxide and 40 to 50% iron oxides, along with smaller quantities of lead and cadmium. These materials can be recovered from the flue dusts by using a proven rotary hearth furnace (RHF) process. By-products of the recycling operation include a crude zinc oxide fume, which is captured in a baghouse filtering system, and sponge iron that may be recycled into the steel making operation. Crude zinc oxide properties plus the operating experience from two commercial RHF installations utilizing MR&E's DRyIron™ Process will be presented.

The viscosity of Fe-Cr-Mn-Ni TRIP/TWIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity, Twinning Induced Plasticity) steel with varied nickel content is investigated using a vibrating finger viscometer. The viscosity of the melt is calculated from the change in power input in the field coil by an immersed finger into the liquid steel to maintain a constant peak-to-peak amplitude of the sine wave of oscillator compared to the idle state. Nickel content in steel is varied from 3 wt% to 9 wt%. The dynamic viscosity (η) at 1600 °C for 3 wt% Ni is 3.73±0.14 mPas, for 6 wt% Ni 3.50±0.03 mPas, and for 9 wt% Ni 3.93±0.09 mPas. There is a kink from low to high nickel content in viscosity values of Fe-Cr-Mn-Ni alloys. This phenomenon can be explained by a change in coordination number in the melt, as reported for Fe-Ni binary system in literature. The availability of viscosity data delivers relevant input to model free fall atomization processes of FeCrMnNi alloys.

The Fairbanks mining district has produced in excess of 7.5 million troy ounces of placer gold and 250,000 troy ounces of lode gold since gold was discovered in the area in 1902. The Fairbanks mining district is in the northwestern part of the Yukon-Tanana Upland Schist Terrane, an area of approximately 240,000 square km that has produced in excess of 21 million troy ounces of placer gold. All lode gold production from the terrane has been from the Fairbanks mining district, and all of this production has come from high-grade gold-quartz polymetallic sulfide veins. Gold grains in the vein systems range in size from several microns to several millimeters. The veins are localized in a complex metamorphic rock assemblage which includes greenstones and felsic metavolcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, meta-exhalatives and metasediments. Gold occurs in the metamorphic host rocks in association with arsenopyrite and arsenic-antimony sulfides which occur in lenses and disseminations within the host rock. Gold grains occurring in the metamorphic host rocks range. in size from sub-micron to a few microns in diameter.

"In this paper, the desulfuration of pyrite cinder pellets was carried out. Phase analysis shows that most sulfur of pyrite cinder exists in the form of elementary sulfur. Most sulfur was removed in preheating stage. 81.25% sulfur was removed and the average SO2 concentration of exhaust gas was 1365ppm when the pellets were preheated at 950oC for 9 min. The final product, assaying 62.42wt%Fe and 0.02wt%S content at 96.88% desulfuration was achieved under the conditions of preheating at 950? for 9 min and roasting at 1200? for 15 min, which can be used as the burden for blast furnace.IntroductionPyrite cinder, as a subsidiary product of sulfuric acid production by roasting of pyrite ores, was solid waste in sulfuric acid enterprises. According to the statistics, the annual production of pyrite cinder is about 15 million tons in China. Besides, there is lots of pyrite cinder deposited for many years [1-3]. The pyrite cinder consumed in the cement and other industries as auxiliary additives only accounts for less 30% of its total discharge and the left is stored in waste pond, occupying much land and polluting environment in China [4-5]. Moreover, pyrite cinder contains iron between 30-63% which can be utilized as a cheap raw material for ironmaking by sintering or pelletizing processes, which can not only prevent pollution but also provide cheap raw materials for ironmaking [6-7]. However, compared to traditional iron ore concentrate, pyrite cinder possesses higher sulfur content."

"This paper is concerned with the construction of a formal technique for the selection of a metallurgical technology. Exergy consumption is used as the criterion of process efficiency. Different items of the exergy balance are considered and techniques for the reduction of exergy consumption are determined. The selected techniques of exergy saving enable us to identify processes which should be used at different stages of steelmaking. The combination of the selected processes enables us to suggest a technology for conversion of iron ore into steel products. The selection of this technology narrows the range of further search of metallurgical processes. The paper shows that qualitative thermodynamic analysis can be used as the first step in the design of metallurgical processes. IntroductionThe existing processes for making, shaping and treating of steel enable us to convert the available iron bearing ores into marketable steel products. However, the energy cost of metal production is much higher than thermodynamically required, while the metal properties are much lower than thermodynamically available. Increasing cost and declining availability of energy and raw meterials make the creation of new steelmaking technologies imperative. In recent years, the number of novel processes for the making, refining, and shaping of steel have been suggested and tested. Some found a practical application. However, the tested technologies make up a small portion of the physically available routes for the conversion of iron ore into a marketable product. It is also not evident that the optimal routes have been tested and that the selected technologies are the best among those tested.Although the development of new metallurgical technologies must be based on the experimental and practical information, the number of the alternative routes for the making, shaping and treating of steel, as well as the cost of examining each single route, make necessary the use of analytical techniques for the evaluation of the possible ways of process development."

An example is presented to illustrate the joint effect of local reaction equilibria and mass transfer limitations, for reactions during ladle refining of steel. The example relies on some of the kinetic principles that David Robertson has employed to quantify many metallurgical processes. In calcium treatment of alumina inclusions in aluminum-killed steels, solid CaS forms as an intermediate reaction product. During subsequent reaction, CaS disappears and calcium aluminate forms; at the same time, aluminum and sulfur dissolve in the steel. Kinetic analysis shows that the rate of this reaction is not limited by mass transfer of dissolved aluminum and sulfur away from the reacting inclusions. The reaction rate is likely limited by transport of dissolved calcium. This example also illustrates the use of FactSage macros for kinetic modeling.

"Preparation and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmission spectra of aluminum fluoroberyllate glasses, MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-A1Fr BeF2 (MCSA-Be) and MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-AlFrYFrBeF2 (MCSAY-Be), were studied. The influence of YF3 and BeF2 on the thermal stabilization against crystallization and VUV transmittance was investigated. With increasing the BeF2 content, the crystallization tendency decreased and the absorption edge shifted to shorter wavelength in the MCSA-Be and MCSAY-Be glasses. The MCSA-20Be glass composition exhibited the shortest wavelength UV absorption edge (-147 nm) and the highest transmittance at 157 nm (60% for 2 mm sample thickness). The transmission values at 157 nm and the slope (steepness) of the absorption edge were found to be significantly influenced by the trace amount of Fe2+ derived from the BeF2 raw materials.IntroductionPure beryllium fluoride is known to be an only fluoride that forms one component glass on cooling from the molten state and is structurally similar to silica with [SiO4]4- tetrahedra. Molten BeF2 is highly viscous with a viscosity of about 106 poise near its liquidus temperature at 550""C[l]. The addition of modifying fluorides such as LiF, NaF or KF to BeF2 substantially decreases the viscosity[2]. Glass forming region of binary fluoroberyllate glasses has been mainly reported by several authors [3]. LiFBeF2 binary system is structually analogy for Mg0-Si02 system from their phase diagram and ratio of ionic radius for each cation and anion, respectively. LiF-BeF2 binary glasses seems to be promising candidates for the extreme deep vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmitting optical materials owing to their larger band gap. However, it is chemically unstable, and so, have no practical application for lens systems in micro lithography equipments and substrate materials for F2 (157nm) excimer laser[4]. There are also few reports on the VUV transparency of multicomponent aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses from the view point of their compositional dependencies. The purpose of this paper is to prepare deep VUV transmitting optical materials and determine the optimum glass compositions for aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses investigating their thermal stabilization against crystallization."

Xidagou is the largest waste water discharge channel of the Anshan Iron and Steel Complex (AISC) with average flow rate of 8000 cubic meters per hour, which is about 75% of the total effluent of the AISC. The waste water from Xidagou seriously polluted the Taizi River Basin. In order to meet the Chinese Class V Standard for Surface Water Discharge and the Standard for Recycled Industrial Water Reuse, with the aid of the World Bank, the AISC began the treatability studies in 1991. Based on the bench-scale test, the AISC carried out pilot-scale treatability studies on three different treatment processes and five different chemical coagulants for more than half a year in 1992. The study results show that the processes of primary sedimentation- chemical mixing and flocculation-secondary sedimentation-filtration can meet the requirement and that PFS and PAM are effective and economic chemical coagulants.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical, morphological and thermal properties of biodegradable composites based on aliphatic-aromatic copolyester/polylatic acid blends (PBAT/PLA blends) reinforced by açaí seed fibers, an abundant byproduct of the açaí fruit agro industry. The biodegradable polymeric composites were prepared by melting extrusion process using a twin-screw extruder machine. The fibers removed from the açaí seed were used as the reinforcement and PBAT/PLA blends as the matrix. The influence of the açaí seed fibers addition on properties of composites was investigated by tensile and impact tests, SEM, DSC, and XRD analysis. Correlation between properties was discussed. In addition, açaí seed fibers characterization by SEM, XRD and WDXRF have also been carried out. The addition of açaí seed fibers on biodegradable PBAT/PLA blends showed that it is possible to get interesting property gains in biodegradable polymer by using waste from renewable sources.

The effect of the addition of Silver Sulfide on the rate of Chalcopyrite (CP) of Sulfuric acid (H2SD4 leaching is discussed, Although Ag2S in an expensive addition, a theoretical explanation of it's use will aid in the development of a economic substitution. We have used cyclic voltammography to show the presence reaction species at different potentials. Cyclic Voltammography maps the surface reaction current peaks on CP, to regions on the CP Phorbaix diagram. AC Electro-lmpedance spectroscopy (EIS) models the surface impedance properties, which control the rate of electron and ion transfer, and the surface kinetic reactions, with and with out light. EIS and other measurements show that AgCuS u Photo-reactive material- The EIS results are compared with the SEM and EDXA results to show the presence of diffusion pores, and diffusion controlled reactions during CP leaching without the addition of silver sulfate. We hypothesize that AgCuS is an ionic conductor like Ag2S. EIS shows an imposed negative leaching rate greatly. Our theory shows how the formation of Silver Copper (1) sulfide layer at open circuit potential gives an effect similar to negative potential, that is enhanced with illumination. We verify that AgCuAS is an N-type semiconductor that forms a diode type junction with the electrolyte with the Mott-Schoottly relation.

The oxidation characteristics of solid copper matte particles under simulated Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting conditions are presented. The effects of feed matte grade, matte particle size, oxygen-to-matte mass ratio, oxygen content of the process gas and temperature on the particle oxidation rate, quality of conversion, particle size change and particle morphology were determined. The converting quality was highest (~68) with the 58% copper matte at 1100°C. At similar conditions, the 72% copper matte was more likely to produce copper oxides and leave unoxidized particles rather than directly produce sulfur dioxide at 1100°C, resulting in an average converting quality of 55. The quality of conversion was poorest for the 72% matte at 920°C (~45); the sulfur removal was extremely low even with a relatively high degree of oxidation. Fragmentation of the particles was significant in all cases with the 72% matte. A higher O2/matte .ratio and higher temperature, in general, resulted in increased fragmentation while oxygen enrichment had no significant effect. With the 58% matte, particle size was found to increase for the finest fractions rather than to decrease due to particle expansion.

Several purifying techniques have been developed for controlling the impurity levels in the copper electrolyte at Niihama Copper Refinery. These have been carried out as follows; i ) the study of the reaction in liberation made it possible to raise the current efficiency for arsenic removal by more than 50% and to decrease generation of arsine sharply. By applying this method, a good performance was attained at commercial operation. li) the antimony in the electrolyte can be successfully removed by contacting it with activated carbon. This procedure is applicable particularly when there is a large amount of antimony in the copper anode. lli) for the nickel sulphate recovery from the electrolyte, an electric evaporating system was developed. The characteristics of this process are, capability of continuous operation with less manpower, the high recovery ratio of nickel sulphate (more than 85% as nickel) and no black acid formation in the treated solution.

The purpose of this article is to analyze critically and quantitatively the effect of chemical equilibrium on the overall rates of fluid-solid reactions. It is shown through a mathematical analysis that a reaction with a small equilibrium constant (a positive standard free energy of reaction) is more likely to be rate-controlled by pore diffusion or mass transfer than a reaction with a large equilibrium constant. The overall reaction rate of the former also tends to be slow. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of such a reaction approaches the standard enthalpy of reaction (Mf'), rather than the true activation energy of the chemical reaction. The Law of Additive Reaction Times developed by the author is shown to apply to equilibrium-limited fluid-solid reactions and to be useful in quantitatively analyzing the behavior of such reactions.

By combining the iron reduction process with the usual rotary kiln process, the direct production of metallic zinc from EAF dust is proposed. After thermodynamic estimation and desk-top experiments it is confirmed that the process is hopeful under suitable conditions. In order to get some practical test data the enlargement of the process scale was planned and the bench scale tests were carried on successfully. In these experiments a zinc ingot of PW grade was produced from EAF dust.

The organic household waste has a growing disposal problem, requiring costly disposal systems. It is necessary to find new applications for these materials; one could be the steelmaking raw material production. In this paper is studied the development of self-reducing pellets from the organic waste pyrolysis, where is generated carbon and condensable and non-condensable volatiles. Non-condensable volatiles were burned and condensable volatiles were recovered. The resulting tar was mixed with iron ore, coal powder and flux (CaO), to then be pelletized together. Compression, falls and tumbler tests were conducted to characterize the pellets before and after heat treatment and reduction processes. The reduction curve and their physical and morphological characterization were measured. The results were as was expected, the fluidized coal create sufficient adhesion that pellets earned resistance with an equivalent resistance of common pellets, showing a good feasibility of this process.

Platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation .. concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the ? associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial treatment oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [ (Ni,Fe),9Ss) mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Results showed that increased sulfide oxidation during the biological stage led to improved PGH recovery in the subsequent. chemical leaching stage. cyanidation at 80° c proved to be the best chemical leachant tested. It removed 7.6 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, 97 pct of the gold, but only 34 pct of the platinum from the biooxidized concentrate.

The thermodynamic properties of four liquid ternary zinc alloys, Au-Sn-Zn, Ag-Sn-Zn, AI-Sn Zn and Cu-In-Zn were measured with an electromotive force (emf) method at three or four cross-sections with an constant X:Sn or Cu-In ratio. At the Au-Sn-Zn and AI-Sn-Zn system calorimetric measurements were also carried out in order to compare the integral enthalpy of mixing from the direct measurements with the data of the emf measurements, which were derived by Gibbs-Duhem integration.
