General Crushed Stone Co. operates a dozen quarries in such rock types as gabbro, basalt, granite and limestone. Drilling characteristics and problems vary from one operation to another so that a variety of equipment and methods must be employed. In addition, it has been found that equipment improvements make it advisable to continuously look for and experiment with new machines and accessories. The thirty-second annual meeting of the Montana Society of Engineers was held at Great Falls, Mont., on Apr. 10-12. The first day was given to the reception of visitors and the second day to the inspection of points of engineering interest. On Saturday, at the business meeting, the following officers were elected: President, Samuel Barker, Jr.; first vice-president, Charles A. Lemmon; second vice-president, George T. McGee; secretary and librarian, Clinton H. Moore; treasurer, Harry H. Cochrane; trustee for three years, Theodore Simons.

The new Inspiration copper smelter, which introduced unique technological innovations to the copper industry, required a plant material handling system to match. The system has been designed to convey such diverse bulk materials as copper concentrates, copper precipitates, lime, limestone, silica, flue dust, and revert materials. The moisture content in the materials varies from bone dry to a maximum of 25%. Since the summer of I974 when the smelter went into operation, the material handling system ha provided satisfactory and dependable services.

The increase in drilling activities in Venezuela noted during the latter half of 1932 continued, and 132 wells were completed in 1933 as compared to only 60 completed during 1932. Notwithstanding these new wells, 114 of which were producers, and also the appreciable increase in artificial lifting installations during the year, Venezuelan production was maintained at only a slightly higher level than in 1932, amounting to 120,356,000 bbl. in 1933 as compared to 118,167,000 bbl. in 1932. However, at the end of the year the daily average production of 358,-860 bbl. was 16 per cent higher than that at the end of 1932. Abstract-Lead cake, a zinc smelter flue dust residue, consists primarily of lead sulfate. Characteristic properties of lead cake were determined in order to aid the understanding of reaction mechanisms involved in bismuth removal from lead cake by sulfuric acid digestion. Sp gr (specific gravity) measurements, surface area measurements, and photomicrographs revealed that the particles of lead cake are quite porous and seem to consist of an agglomeration of submicron grains (0.4 pm) fused together in a manner similar to cement clinker. Analysis of experimental rate data, which was independent of particle size, indicates that the dissolution reaction involves two distinct, rate limiting steps. The initial stage of reaction appears to be limited mainly by intergranular diffusion of the reactant, hydrogen ion, while the latter stage of reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion of soluble reaction products through the reaction product layer of the individual grains.

The American Institute of Mining Engineers, and American science in general, have sustained a great loss in the death of Prof Benjamin Silliman, deceased at New Haven, Connecticut, on the 14th of January, 1885, at the age of sixty-eight. But a month has passed since, as one of the pall-bearers, I paid the last tribute to the remains of my old friend and honored master.

Kennecott Copper Corp. has sub- mitted a proposal to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission for a joint experiment to determine if a contained underground nuclear explosion can be used to fracture a low-grade copper ore deposit to recover the copper by in-situ leaching. If authorized, safety and technical studies in the field would be undertaken to determine whether such an experiment could be conducted with full protection for public health and safety. The proposed experiment, known as "Sloop," would be part of the AEC's Plowshare Program to develop peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. As now visualized, the project involves the detonation of about a 20-kiloton nuclear explosive at a depth of 1200 ft.

Longwall methods to mine coal in the United States provide the potential advantages of greatly increased productivity, improved safety, and a higher percent recovery. However, use of longwall systems during the past 10 years has increased much more slowly than was anticipated. This paper discusses some of the problems inhibiting the increased use of longwall systems and a proposed research program to address one of the most critical problem areas.

SAMPLES of REZn2 (RE = rare earth) intermetallic compounds prepared by a variety of techniques have been shown to exhibit an extensively twinned micro-structure.1-4 We have recently conducted compression tests at room temperature on specimens of HoZn2 prepared by a powder metallurgy technique.' The microstructures of specimens before and after testing are shown in Fig. 1. The "before" specimen, Fig. l(a), shows the basic twin structure of this material. WITH the present mobilization program in full swing and the enrollment in engineering colleges dropping off, many solutions are offered to relieve the shortage of trained men in the engineering profession. Industry can absorb about 30,000 engineers annually, according to the Engineers Joint Council, and forecasts indicate that the number graduating will have dropped from 38,000 in 1951 to about 12,000 in 1954. If this condition were to continue there would probably not be enough people with technical training to run industry in four or five years.

Gardner I?. Williams, authority on diamond mining, died at San Francisco, Cal., on Aug. 22, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr. Williams, who was in his eighty-first year, was born in Saginaw, Mich. He was graduated from the University of California in 1865, and afterward took a course at the Freiberg Mining Academy in Saxony. He was awarded the degree of LII. D. by the University of California in 1910, and Doctor of Engineering by the University of Michigan in 1917. This article describes the evaluation of a new geophysical technique used to map fractures between boreholes: electromagnetic geotomography used in conjunction with salt water tracers. An experiment has been performed in a granitic rock mass. Geotomographic images have been generated and compared with borehole geophysical data: neutron logs, acoustic velocity logs, caliper logs and acoustic televiewer records. Comparisons between the images and the geophysical logs indicate that clusters of fractures were detected but single fractures were not.

The experiences of Canex Placer Ltd. in establishing vegetation on a lead-zinc tailing pond are presented, hoping others with similar challenges will be benefited. History The tailing ponds are the result of 23 years of mining and milling operations, which ceased in August 1970. Roughly 7.9 million tons of lead-zinc ore were removed in that time. The ponds are located between Salmo River and B.C. Highway 3, about 8 miles north of Nelway near the Canada-U.S. border.
