The Bureau of Mines developed a process using amines for recovering tungsten as ammonium paratungstate from alkaline leach liquors without producing synthetic scheelite as an intermediate product. Over 90 pct of the tungsten in low-grade scheelite or ferberite concen-trate was recovered as ammonium paratungstate by (l) autoclave leaching the concentrate with Na2CO3, (2) solvent extraction of the acidified leach liquor with kerosine solutions of either a quaternary amine (Aliquat 336) or a primary amine (Primene JM-T), (3) stripping the tungsten values from the quaternary amine with ammoniacal NH4C1 or from the primary amine with NH4OH, and (4) crystallization of ammonium paratungstate from the strip liquor. Reagent consumption in pounds per pound of W03 recovered was, for the quater¬nary amine, 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4 , 2.2 NH4Cl, 1 NH3, and 0.4 glacial acetic acid; for the primary amine, it was 3 Na2CO3, 3.5 H2SO4, .06 NH4Cl, and 0.9 NH3. Both reagents extract molybdenum along with tungsten. Silicate and phosphate are partly extracted and contaminate the product; leach liquors containing these impurities require preliminary purification.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting a series of rock mechanics investigations at the Lucky Friday Mine in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho. In the present study, the energy release rate (ERR) index was used to evaluate three underhand stope backfill parameters-cement content, density, and placement gap-to determine their influence on rock bursts. This index provides a relative measure of the likelihood of rock bursting for a given rock mass. It is known that the elastic idealization of the rock mass inherent in this method causes underestimation of stope closure and hence underestimation of the influence of backfill on rock bursting. However, this evaluation still showed that (1) changing from present practice to one in which backfill was omitted altogether would increase the ERR by 42 pct and (2) perfect placement of backfill would reduce the ERR below present practice levels by 28 pct. The easiest step toward perfect placement would be elimination of the placement gap, which accounted for half of the difference in ERR between present practice and ideal placement conditions. There was no indication that increasing initial fill strength through increased cement content would affect the ERR.

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

Since roof falls in the vicinity of the working face in underground coal mines are a major source of fatalities and injuries in this country's coal mines, it is evident that the present systems of temporary support for use in this working area are ineffective. This seems to be chiefly due to the inconvenience of setting up heavy and awkward devices such as jacks, posts and the like, which also interfere with the movement of men and machines in this critical working area. This program was concerned with defining and testing commercially available materials that could be used as support elements in a more convenient flexible personnel shield. The objectives of this program were to: 1. survey the materials that might provide the support elements of a flexible-material personnel shield for use in underground coal mines and prepare a list of those materials which appear most suitable for use in coal mines. 2. prepare a proposed testing plan for the materials to be selected from the aforementioned list by the Bureau of Mines for further evaluation. The test plan was designed to provide the following information: a. Tensile strength. b. Proportional limit. c. Creep characteristics at room temperature. d. Elastic properties depicted by stress-strain curves. Properties were tested in two directions for woven fabrics. e. Density. f. Resistance to abrasion. g. Resistance to attack by mine atomsphere. h. Resistance to humidity. i. Impact characteristics.

Problem: CFOI and SOII data show that 2,287 U.S. workers died and 32,807 workers sustained days away from work due to electrical shock or electrical burn injuries between 1992 and 1998. Method: The narrative, work activity, job title, source of injury, location, and industry for each fatal electrical accident were examined. A primary causal factor was identified for each fatality. Results: Electrical fatalities were categorized into five major groups. Overall, 44% of electrical fatalities occurred in the construction industry. Contact with overhead power lines caused 41 % of all electrical fatalities. Discussion: Electrical shock caused 99% of fatal and 62% of nonfatal electrical accidents. Comprising about 7% of the U.S. workforce, construction workers sustain 44% of electrical fatalities. Power line contact by mobile equipment occurs in many industries and should be the subject of focused research. Other problem areas are identified and opportunities for research are proposed. Impact on Industry: Improvements in electrical safety in one industry often have application in other industries.

A simplified energy model for the United States is quantified for a recent historical period. The basic model and calculated quantified structures are used for a number of analytical case studies that estimate midterm and long-range shifts in patterns of energy resources demand and required supply. Historical data series are presented for the years 1947 to 1965 in the form of integrated energy balances by source, form, and consuming sector. In case studies I to XII, conditional projections of historical trends of energy demand and required supply are made for the midterm period 1966 to 1980. The projections are carried out by correlation of major energy components with relevant independent variables such as major economic indicators. Simulations of the medium-range projections to 1980 are carried out by varying the assumptions for the determining variables to produce high-and low-range projections for the midterm period. Case studies XIII to XXII are long term contingency or technological forecasts to the year 2000. These cases assume technological changes or innovations that produce major shifts in the long term pattern of energy consumption and the mix of required resources. The domestic resource base is assessed in its ability to meet projected or forecast demand for energy resources under the midterm and longrun assumptions made in the various case studies. Various energy issues or problems identified from the analyses of the case studies are discussed, and possible alternative approaches to solutions to these issues or problems are suggested.

During U.S. Bureau of mines mineral investigations, in 1981 and 1983, no mines, prospects, or mineral resources were identified in the Little Sand Spring Wilderness Study Area (WSA). Placer gold values in near-surface samples from alluvial fans within or near the WSA contained no more than 66 cents gold per cu yd, at $400 per troy ounce gold price. Sand and gravel and carbonate rocks occur in large quantities, but transportation costs to distant markets preclude their classification as resources. Nitrogen, lithium, clay, pumice, perlite, aragonite, and agate occurrences in the WSA are small or low-grade. The Silvia Mine, adjacent to the WSA contains gold-, silver-, copper-, and lead-bearing shear zones which strike toward the WSA. INTRODUCTION The Little Sand Spring WSA, encompassing 33,500 acres, is approximately 56 mi east of Big Pine, California, by paved and graded dirt roads (fl;. 1). Elevations range from 2,600 ft in Death Valley Wash to 5,600 ft along the California-Nevada boundary. The nearest permanent facilities are at Grapevine Ranger station and Scotty's Castle (Death Valley Ranch), about 9 and 11 mi, respectively, south in Death Valley National Monument.

"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. Where exposure - as in the refractories industries, the grinding industries, sandstone industry, and pottery industry - is day in and day out, they rightly demand a premium far higher than for any other disease scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act - 5 per cent on the wages bill. row every industrial employer, such as the paint and varnish manufacturer, who has a sack of crushed silica in his store .room, from which he extracts once a week enough to make a paste With spirit and add to his other ingredients in order to give them the necessary ""bite,"" becomes involved, and may have to abandon the use of the material or pay 8 per cent on his wages bill for an absolutely negligible risk.. Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The fatigue-failure characteristics under high-frequency (10 KHz) cyclic loading were determined for a marble, granite, and quartzite. The rock speci-mens were cyclicly loaded (using a high-power piezoelectric sonic transducer) at a constant strain amplitude generated by forming a longitudinal standing stress (strain) wave in the cylindrical test specimen. The number of load cycles required to fail each rock type at a given strain amplitude was deter-mined. The fatigue fractures were tensile in nature and the fracture load amplitudes were as low as 30 pct of the static tensile strength. Also the internal heating of the rock caused by the material damping (internal friction) was measured. The damping and internal heat generation in the specimens was analyzed to show that nearly all of the power input can be accounted for as a change in enthalpy in the specimen. Using these results the thermal strain in the rock was calculated to evaluate its contribution to fatigue failure. The thermal strain was found to range up to 30 pct of the dynamic strain amplitude depending on the load amplitude and the number of load cycles. The specific energy required for failure was determined and possible applications of the high-frequency fatigue fragmentation process are discussed.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

This Bureau of Mines report examines the percentage depletion allowance rate structure in relation to several criteria that are indicative of U.S. mineral import dependence. These criteria are the minerals considered as strategic and critical for stockpiling purposes, the ratio of reserves to forecast cumulative demand (1976-2000) for selected minerals, and the U.S. net import reliance as a percentage of apparent consumption (1978), also for selected minerals in general, it was Found that there does exist a direct, although not perfect, relationship between the percentage depletion allowance rates and the degree of import dependence as indicated by these three criteria. The higher percentage rates tend to he associated with those minerals for which the United States is, or will likely he, heavily dependent on foreign sources. In addition, a basic discussion of the mineral depletion allowance is provided, including numerical examples illustrating the computation of the allowance under several assumptions. Also, the percentage depletion allowance rates for individual minerals are tabulated.

The primary purpose of this contract was to evaluate methods and techniques by which the size distribution acid concentration of mining-related dusts can be measured. One result has been the development of a portable, battery-operated optical particle counter/ multi-channel analyzer system which can he used to determine the size distribution and concentration of mining aerosols. One important aspect of this program has been the development of a calibration technique which relates the output of the optical particle counter to the penetration of the particles through an impactor: This results in a calibration curve in terms of the aerodynamic or Stokes' diameter or the aerosol particles. Using this technique, calibrations were performed on coal, silica, Arizona road dust, potash, and rock dust (corer ore) aerosols. Another task of this program was the calibration and evaluation of the GCA respirible dust monitors (RMD) 101-1 and 301. The results of evaluation showed that the instruments were within the manufacturer's specification of ±25% of the true mass concentration up to about 15 mg/m , if the dust particles were in a size range from about 0.7 to 10 µm aerodynamic diameter. Particles smaller tan about 0.7 µm were not collected by the instrument and particles larger than about 10 µm were lose in the inlet. Other tasks included performing field studies in cooperative research programs with the Bureau of Mines personnel, development of a portable polystyrene latex generator for use in optical particle counter calibrations in the field. The incorporation of impactor classification devices on the inlets of aerosol mass measuring instruments to give mass size distributions, and a study of the density of coal particles as a function of the particle size.

Under a very high vacuum of 10-8 torr the transfer of terrestrial mineral beneficiation methods to the vacuum ambient of extraterrestrial locations such as the lunar surface was investigated. In the size range for the electro-static and magnetic separation of ores (minus 35 plus 150 mesh) there is no adhesion of particles produced by crushing and grinding due to the limited contact area, and for repeated contacts area size has a frequency of occurrence in accordance to the normal law. The photoelectric effect which is successful in separating a few minerals in an air ambient has a wider application in a vacuum, while the lack of air viscosity and sound transmission provides for high feed velocities and the adaptation of particle vibration to dispersion and grinding. Contact electrification is reversible upon return to atmosphere.

Also, interviews with experienced mine operators add much to a complete understanding of what must be done to address methane problems in metal/nonmetal mines. The presence of methane gas in metal/nonmetal mines around the world is more common than one might imagine [Edwards and Durucan 1991]. For example: • The former Soviet republics have occurrences of methane and hydrogen in apatite, gold, and diamond ores, where solid or liquid bitumen occurs in the rock. • Scandinavian iron ore deposits include methane and other hydrocarbons in boreholes that intersect pitch and asphalt within the deposits, and methane and nitrogen in boreholes and fissures in arsenic and sulfide ores.

"INTRODUCTION One of the principal activities of the Bureau of Mines during the recent war was to help to increase the supply of strategic and critical minerals. Fluorite was one of the most critical of the nonmetallic minerals because of the increased demand for it as a flux in basic open-hearth and electric steel furnaces and as a raw material for the production of artificial cryolite used in the aluminum industry. Wartime developments in the technology of hydro-fluoric acid, such as the use of the anhydrous acid as a catalyst in high-octane-gasoline production and the use of organic fluorides as carriers for insecticides, also increased the demand for acid-grade fluorspar. 2/ In 1943 the consumption of acid-grade fluorspar was advancing at a more rapid rate than production and was only slightly less than production during the latter half of the year.The outlook for the postwar market for fluorspar is encouraging. Steel production is expected to remain high until the domestic demand for commodities not manufactured during the war is satisfied. The uses for hydrofluoric acid also are expected to increase under the impetus of war-initiated research. In consideration of these and other factors some authorities predict a new peacetime demand for fluorspar equal to 60 to 75 percent of the war production, 5/ 6/ and others believe that the fluorspar industry will be permanently expanded. 7/"

Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

The prevention of accidents is considered a necessity at all branches and divisions of the Phelps Dodge Corporation copper-producing operations, and since there is a continual exchange of data on safety accomplishments between the various units, their safety programs are fundamentally similar. Variations in accident-prevention methods result from a difference in emphasis rather than from a difference in the elements themselves. The main copper-producing operations of the corporation ore conducted in Arizona and distributed as follows: Copper Queen Branch, mines division, Fisbee, and smelter division, Douglas, Aria.; Morenci Branch, mines division, Morenci, and smelter division, Clifton, Ariz.; New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz.; and United Verde Branch, mines division, Jerome, and smelter division, Clarkdale Ariz. As it is not feasible to describe here the safety programs of all branches and divisions, the program at the Clarkdale smelter has been selected for discussion. The United Verde Brach includes the mine and smelter purchased by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in February 1935 from the United Verde Copper Co. The mine at Jerome and the reduction works at Clarkdale are designated, respectively, as the mine and smelter divisions.
