The search for a more effective means of coping with methane liberation has resulted in the expanded use of seam degasification. Its advantages are measured not only in reducing the hazards due to methane, but also in producing a marketable commodity: .the gas, itself. However, the success of a methane drainage system is the culmination of many complex factors, the most important being the coal seam permeability. The two most popular drainage techniques used mining today are the vertically simulated borehole method and the in-seam horizontal borehole method. The objective of this paper is to determine the permeability range in which the selection of the degasification technique is based primarily on equipment and economic analysis. A discussion of the equipment involved will be incorporated into examples evaluated by the Penn State coal methane simulation model.

The recent development of rare-earth permanent magnets has impacted the field of magnetic separation. The permanent magnets technology led to the advent of various magnetic separators particularly designed for application in mineral processing. In this paper, a new type of rare-earth PHGMS possessing a higher magnetic field strength in the working zone was developed using finite element analysis techniques. The NdFeB permanent magnets used had properties of 38 MGOe stored energy, and magnetic material flux levels exceed 1.2 T, The combination of scientific and engineering design and suitable matrices can offer an effective separation of industrial minerals, such as kaolin, feldspar, etc. Compared with conventional high intensity electromagnetic separators, the equipment can reduce electrical energy over 80% with lower operation and maintenance costs, and less installation space.

To improve underground safety and visibility during mining applications, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant designed and built a dry-dust filtration unit. The unit works in conjunction with a Spendrup 1120-70 fan with ventilation tubing to filter the face exhaust air during mining operations. The closed- loop system is designed to filter 17 m3/s (36,000 cfm) and is intended to screen 10- µm (1,250 mesh) and larger particles at 90% efficiency. To accomplish this, the unit uses a combination of Dollinger Staynew Inertial Spin filters, cyclones and traditional mesh filter media.

PT Freeport's mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500 m (1,640 ft) long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 kt/d (138,000 stpd) and this will be increasing to 240 kt/d (265,000 stpd). This amount of falling rock generates high pres¬sures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term so¬lution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

In 1988, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project. This was prompted by numerous complaints from residents in the vicinity of the project and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods used by two major contractors driving 20 km (12.5 miles) of tunnel, and drilling more than 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts are detailed on design, construction, schedule, cost and the environment.

This paper presents a case history of the design and construction of the access shaft and cross adit utilized to gain access to the Los Angeles Metro Rail tunnel alignment, at the A146 Contract site. The access shaft, a 14 m (45 ft) inside diameter structure, was constructed using ring beams and lagging with concrete backfill to a depth of 18.59 m (61 ft). The cross adit was hand excavated in sequential benches using liner plate, arch ring beams, and posts for support. The sequence of excavation and support placement are discussed. Soil conditions encountered at the project site are discussed together with the development of the design criteria. Instrumentation data collected during the excavation are also presented.

The selection of a suitable mathematical function for the modelling of the partition curve for dense medium cyclones is discussed. Five alternative functional forms (based on three basic functions) are compared using data obtained in the course of an extensive experimental study of a 610mm dense medium cyclone. It is shown that, for adequately sampled tests, any of the functions may be used, although a function based on the Weibull distribution is shown to be most suitable. Where data are poor, all functional forms exhibit disadvantages, notably in terms of a reduction in precision of parameter estimation. This problem can be exacerbated by the complex numerical techniques required to estimate the parameters of a particular function. A set of ideal requirements for a performance function are presented.

Cone fitting is a procedure which can be used to estimate the short range, linear portion of a variogram. Rather than combining data over windows In different directions and fitting by hand, cone fitting estimates the variogram in all directions at once using a multiple regression approach. The method automatically provides estimates of nugget effect, anisotropy, and initial slope of the variogram. This paper presents the results of simulation studies which have been carried out. These studies Indicate that the method works well and that it may be particularly useful for small data sets. The simulation studies also indicate that the local variogram may differ greatly from the theoretical variogram.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Reasons for low recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope, and scanning Auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures that have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their application to the flotation recoveries of precious metals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

The production and consumption of industrial minerals in the United States traditionally have played important roles in mining and in the supply of the bulk of basic raw materials to the economy. This diverse group of minerals extracted and consumed by a variety of industries accounts, on a weight and volume basis, for most mineral-based products consumed in our economy. Industrial minerals form the bulk of the basic raw-materials feedstock for most of the construction, agricultural, and inorganic-chemical-manufacturing sectors, and a good portion of the transportation, manufacturing, organic chemical, and service sectors of the U.S. economy. In this presentation, I discuss current estimates of the amount and value of industrial minerals mined compared with all mining in 1997. I then present a summary of 1997 production of industrial minerals by several end-use industries. This is followed by a historical perspective of the consumption of industrial minerals as a subset of all basic materials, with special emphasis on the aggregates industry. The presentation concludes with a look at the geographic distribution of industrial mineral operations in the United States and some thoughts about the future.

This paper presents the results of grinding tests performed on magnetite from Kiruna (Sweden) and on chromite from Skoumtza (Macedonia. Greece). Stresses were measured by XRD, which determined the variations in the characteristic structural spacings of the minerals both before and after, grinding in a HSM/250 Herzog laboratory ring mill. Anal Isis of the magnetite and c hromite crystallinstallin was performed hi measuring the broadening of the strongest diffraction peak (311). .Also, structural analysis on chromite was carried out using the Mikheev model. Ultrafine-grinding tests on the magnetite and chomite demonstrated that this type of treatment can induce profound variations m the surface-stress state. These included plastic variations of the cell followed by "chemical" stress with oxidation front the stricture to form hydroxide or carbonate, films. This can have a great influence on the mineral reactivity to flotation reagents

A process for the separation and recovery of cobalt and nickel was optimized for a sulfate leach solution of Indian Ocean sea nodules containing 80 g/m3 cobalt and 730 g/m3 nickel using the sodium salt of Cyanex 272 as the extractant. Extraction of both cobalt and nickel increased with an increase in equilibrium pH and extractant concentration. The extracted species with respect to cobalt appears to be CoA2.3HA. More than 99.6% extraction of cobalt was achieved using 0.04M solvent in a three-stage counter current simulation at the A:O phase ratio of 3:2. The co-extraction of nickel was about 0.6% only. Two-stage countercurrent stripping of cobalt from the loaded organic at an A:O ratio of 1: 7 resulted in a pregnant electrolyte enriched by 0.8 kg/m3, thus enabling a ten times overall enrichment of cobalt. From the cobalt free raffinate, nickel extraction was carried out using 0.25M solvent in two countercurrent stages, and the extraction showed a 99.8% recovery. Stripping of nickel from the loaded solvent was carried out at an equal phase ratio with the advance electrolyte of pH 1.75 in two countercurrent stages. The nickel stripping efficiency was found to be 98.8%. The present studies indicated that complete recovery of cobalt and nickel was possible using nine counter-current stages.

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. Leaching of Shizhuyuan low-grade refractory tungsten ore was carried out in a mechanically activating reactor. The effect of experimental parameters-temperature, amount of Na2C03, addition of NaOH, ratio of liquid to solid and leaching time - on the recovery of WO3 was studied. The WO3 recovery up to 96.99% have been achieved when the tungsten ore was digested by soda not more than three times the stoichiometric amount at 185-195°C for 1 .O-2.0 hours. Iso-extraction countour diagrams were drawn to illustrate the effect of various parameters on leaching. The WO3 recovery could be expected to increase 10-15% compared to that of conventional soda autoclave process.
