The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Construction works for this new line have been divided by the railroad administration into eight sections. Five of these have already been committed to joint ventures. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

In a continuing effort to upgrade tunnel design and construction practice, the New York City Transit Authority sponsored a geotechnical monitoring program on a recently completed section of the E. 63rd Street line in mid-town Manhattan. The purpose of the program was to document rock behavior as well as temporary and final rock support systems to provide a possible basis for either confirmation or modificification to design methods and construction specifications. This paper describes those portions of the study associated with rock behavior and temporary support systems. The entire study included monitoring of rock movements above the tunnel as well as adjacent to a 36.6m (120 ft) shaft, monitoring of stresses in steel ribs, monitoring of loads in rock bolts in two test sections and monitoring of stresses in the final concrete lining. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Route 131-A, Section 4 is located in mid-town Manhattan extending from under the Central-Park Zoo on Fifth Avenue eastward under 63rd Street to the end of contract between Madison and Park Avenue. Figure 1 is a Project Locus Map. The contract included approximately 355m (1165 l.f.) of 4 track tunnel(13.4m (44 ft) wide by 13.7m (45 ft) high excavated dimensions) plus a 22.9m (75 ft) by 19.8m (65 ft) by 36.6m (120 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The entire tunnel and most of the excavation shaft was excavated in metamorphic rock, known locally as the Manhattan Schist. The depth to tunnel invert varied from approximately 27.4m (90 ft) at the west end of the contract to 35.Om (115 ft) at the east end. Rock cover above the excavated crown varied from approximately 6.7m (22 ft) at the approximate mid-point of the contract to 18.9m (62 ft) at the western end. It is well known that manguniferous silver ores containing manganese intimate) associated with silver are not amenable to conventional extraction methods. The segregation process has been applied primarily to the recovery of copper from oxidized and oxide-sulfide ores. A new alternative process, consisting of segregation roasting followed by flotation to recover the silver from refractory manganiferous silver ores, was studied using a 23-factorial experimental design. Laboratory investigations were conducted on a manganiferous silver ore analyzing 0.02% copper, 0.09% lead, 0.33% zinc, 12.55% manganese and 187 g/t silver. The investigation was designed to study the effects of the addition of salts, coke and copper (11) oxide on silver recovery. The results indicated that 79.3% of the silver can be recovered in the absence of copper oxide and 88.4% of the silver can be recovered with a copper oxide content of 1.5% at 750°C, 2% salt (NaCI). 1 % coke and 30 min of roasting. It was concluded that the addition of copper oxide improves silver recovery.

A review of the history of boosters is given with examples of the prominent types that have been made commercially. The performance and design features of protected core boosters are discussed in detail. A new gel booster is discussed with its advantages to the mining industry. Booster size, hole configuration, performance and safety aspects are reviewed. Important features of boostering in above ground and underground blasting are related to an economic analysis. This presentation will cover different types of boosters commonly used in mining. However, for the purpose of this paper a few terms need to be defined to clarify the action of different parts of a priming system. Booster* - "Any unit of explosive or blasting agent to be used in a charged hole for the purpose of perpetuating or intensifying the initial detonation". Primer* - "A unit, package or cartridge' of explosives containing a detonator or detonating cord which is used to transmit detonation to other explosives or blasting agents". Detonator - A device for initiating a detonation from a flame or a small electric current, the former being represented by a fuse cap and the latter an electric blasting cap.

INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. Title IV of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) provides for an abandoned mine reclamation fund. This fund, taken from fees collected from operating coal mines, provides capital for the reclamation process. The Act directs the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to collect the fees based on coal production. Monies from the abandoned mine lands (AML) fund are distributed through two programs. The first provides OSM with capital to use in emergency situations resulting from abandoned mine sites and reclaiming high priority sites in states without established AML programs. The second distributes the money through a state's AML program in the form of grants. To provide for a flexible and customized selection procedure for AML projects, a management information system (MIS) that combines scientific selection procedures is being developed. This system employs objective and subjective methods developed in systems research in recent years. The MIS component is an essential part of any selection process involving large numbers of potential projects. It must contain all the necessary project parameters that can be applied to the selection of projects whether or not they are to be used in the immediate selection criteria. In addition, variable selection criteria will allow ‘what if’ types of inquiries for comparison of differing selections and benefits.

The North Shore 9 Collector System comprised an integral part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewer District's Water Pollution Abatement Program. The project required the construction of 1,490 m of tunnel, ranging from 1.5 m to 4.6 m in diameter along three separate alignments beneath arterial streets traversing Milwaukee's central business and cultural districts. This paper details the various aspects of the tunnel drives which were accomplished using two Lovat EPB type TBMs in conjunction with pipe-jacking procedures. Shaft configurations developed for the project, including ancillary subsidence mitigation components and portal pressurization facilities are discussed. Anomalies in observed soil behavior at variance with the parameters delineated in the project's geotechnical report are addressed.

Slurry viscosity ultimately affects the majority of mineral extraction processes. However, to date its role has been disguised because mineral processing equipment has been conservatively designed to operate at minimal slurry viscosity. With most ores this still meant acceptable solids concentration was achieved. However, with the advent of treatment of weathered ores the resulting higher slurry viscosity (rheology) has meant solids concentration has had to be reduced, often to unacceptable levels. To permit operation at higher solids concentration chemical dispersants are employed. These dispersants are expensive and their addition should be controlled. Slurry Systems Pty Limited (SSPL) has developed an On-Line Viscometer to monitor and control slurry viscosity, whether by controlling water addition or by controlling dispersant addition. Using this instrument the slurry rheology can be controlled at the optimum level, maximizing solids throughput, and minimizing water, reagent, and dispersant addition. This paper discusses rheology of typical mineral slurries, the relationship between slurry rheology and percent solids in a slurry, and the need for rheological control in mineral processing. The effects of rheology on various process steps, and the use of dispersants are reviewed. The paper concludes with summarizing actual case histories and cost impact of Theological control.

INTRODUCTION This paper presents an assessment of conventional flotation technology. In addition it presents some ideas which can be used to change the perception of what may be done with conventional flotation equipment to maximize its efficiency. Perspective of Conventional Flotation Technology 1. Flotation in many coal preparation plants is defined as something between a necessary evil and a non-viable concept because: -Too much art is required on a continuous basis to achieve uniformly acceptable results. -It is expensive, the capital cost in dollars per ton of circuit feed for flotation and dewatering is high. -It is a difficult process to use when SO2 reduction governs system design and equipment selection. -It creates a product (fine coal froth) that is difficult to dewater in the presence of BTU/lb as-received pressures. -It is a difficult process to control from a management standpoint, there are no dependable set points to rely on. 2. Many froth cell circuits are 0.5m x 0 (nominal 28 M x 0) feed which is sourced from screen/cyclone underflows. The original intent was to obtain maximum yield at acceptable product quality and moisture using disc filters. (See Figure #1) 3. An alternate to conventional flotation and its perceived to be limits of efficiency, capital costs, etc. is to move towards such developing flotation technologies as column flotation, reverse flotation, and microbubbles. A lot of work is being done to move these concepts thru pilot stages into full scale, commercial plant operation. The majority of the coal producers and coal preparation plant designers view these concepts as being in the development/pilot plant stages. OBJECTIVES Based on the preceeding comments of the perspectives of the coal producers and plant designers, the options are limited. They can make do with what they have available to them in the way of industry standard equipment and practices or they can move forward with developing technology. I feel there is a third option: what can we really do today with what is available to us, without reinventing the wheel? APPROACH 1. When processing coal against ash and SO2 restrictions, the fine clean coal stream can be the best stream on the clean coal conveyor due to the release by size and the ability to create a high BTU/low sulfur (dry basis) product. 2. Targets: -Consistent raw coal size consist in the plant feed . -Do not put pyrites in the froth cells. -Adjust criteria defining good flotation away from yield towards maximum BTU recovery at minimum ash. -Limit the froth cell feed size consist to 0.15 mm x 0 (nominal 100M x 0). -Establish and maintain a correct, consistent percent solids in the froth cell feed. -Select flotation reagents with care. -Introduce reagents in the proper sequence.

Dragline stripping operations account for over one-half of the U.S. bituminous coal production mined by surface coal mining methods. The dragline is a popular stripping tool because of its flexibility in varying overburden depths and relatively low operating costs per cubic yard of overburden. Because of the relatively high capital costs of the machines and their use as a primary stripping tool, the selection process is an important step in the mine planning procedure.

Hydrometallurgical processes involve the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, calcines, mattes and scrap materials by a series of operations involving leaching or dissolution, separation, purification and reduction of metals in aqueous solutions. The underlying theoretical basis of many of these operations is electrochemical in nature and it is the purpose of this review to identify and illustrate, by way of examples from the author's experience and that of others, the central role of interfacial electrochemistry in the understanding, design and control of these operations.

In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea.

Any one who has been involved with the mining or the treatment of gold-bearing ores will agree that at the end of the total process, the quantity of gold recovered is never as much as was expected. These short falls are usually explained away by claiming that:- the original evaluation of the ore being mined was inaccurate the plant treatment process is not at its optimum theft is taking place excessive dilution occurs during mining The truth of the matter is that the gold is being "lost". During all the stages of its production, starting from the mining, right through to the smelting process, a certain amount of gold is not recovered. When a newly found gold deposit is being evaluated and the drilling data being analysed, cautionary factors are applied so that the grade is not over-stated. Once the decision has been taken to start mining and development is in progress, the exposed ore is sampled. When Again, when this data is being analysed more safety factors are used to ensure that when a piece of ground is given a block-value, the gold content is not over estimated. mining actually takes place and the ore transported to the plant for treatment, the metallurgical department also introduces certain safety factors when predicting how much gold will be recovered. This shows that the quantity of gold that one expects to finally recover is already a conservative figure. The actual quantity recovered invariably falls short of this figure, in fact, South African gold mines are satisfied when achieving a Mine Call Factor (MCF) of 85%. In the last few years a great deal of work has been carried out to investigate how this unaccounted for gold is lost and what steps can be taken to remedy the situation. Previously mined areas were re-swept using the traditional hand brush method; experiments were carried out with water jets sometimes in conjunction with compressed air and even small portable vacuum cleaners were tried. None of these methods were totally successful in recovering the left over gold but the use of vacuum systems showed the most potential. the In South Africa this has resulted in introduction of high-powered vacuum systems on the gold mines to suck-up this lost gold. These were initially introduced in the mining areas, particularly old areas, to recover any left over ore. The results proved extremely profitable, So much SO that presently, well over 120 suction systems are doing this type of work. This success encouraged plant operators to look at areas of potential loss in the plant itself. This has resulted in an increasing number of machines being supplied to gold plants mainly for clean-up applications with the bonus that the material sucked up invariably contains gold.

It is difficult to decide who most deserves credit for discovery of a mining district that has produced over 19.8 Mg (7,000,000 fine oz) of gold and still contains a large reserve of low grade ore. Fred Culver may have made the first discovery. In the summer of 1867, the ship's log of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s steamer Otter stated that Fred Culver had been found nearly lifeless from wounds, without provisions, but with some 2.3 kg (80 oz) of rough, placer gold in the bottom of his canoe; he told of finding a rich creek and an attack by Indians that caused the death of his two companions. The place of rescue was about 24 km (15 miles) southeast from the present site of Juneau. Possibly John Muir, the hero of modem environmentalists, should be given important credit. In 1879 he reported finding mineralization along what later became to be known as the Juneau Gold Belt, and it was his report that induced the cantankerous German mining engineer, George Pilz, to grub- stake some of the prospectors who had drifted into Sitka from the declining gold placers of Cassiar, British Columbia. Pilz also offered rewards to Indians who might report gold discoveries.

Microsilica or silica fume is a waste material generated from silicon or silicon-containing alloys producing electric furnaces. One of its usage is as an additive in the concrete production. This investigation describes a process to use microsilica as a feed material to produce fine silicon carbide. A thermal plasma reactor is used to convert this waste material into a value added ceramic. Details of the theoretical considerations, experimental work, and characterization are presented in this work

This paper considers simulation of truck dispatching systems using maximum expected production of the truck-shovel system as the measure of performance. Two analysis methods are utilized: multiple comparisons with the best (MCB) and the combination of MCB with the variance reduction technique known as common random numbers (CRN). These two techniques are compared via simulation experiments. Results show that the combined procedure of MCB with CRN is the superior tool to use to reduce the total number of replications needed to ensure the specified probability of correct selection from a number of systems. In this case study, MCB with CRN reduced the variance by 29% and the number of required replications by 48%. Also, the MCB with CRN procedure narrowed the confidence interval by 18%.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs, which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study, evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed unidirectional powered precleaner, filter and pressurizer that brings clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This research effort provided another example of the enhancement in air quality that can be achieved in an enclosed cab from the implementation of an improved filtration system and by establishing positive pressurization from increased intake air volume and sealing the cab. This testing showed a significant reduction in respirable dust levels in the enclosed cab when comparing baseline versus post-testing results. Since dust levels were similar near the roof and floor of the cab during post-testing, the unidirectional flow pattern did not appear to significantly improve the performance over the conventional design in this study.

The continuous mining machine is a key piece of equipment used in underground coal mining operations. Over the past several decades these machines have been involved in a number of mine worker fatalities. Proximity detection systems have been developed to avert hazards associated with operating continuous mining machines. Incorporating intelligent design into proximity detection systems allows workers greater freedom to position themselves to see visual cues or avoid other hazards such as haulage equipment or unsupported roof or ribs. However, intelligent systems must be as safe as conventional proximity detection systems. An evaluation of the 39 fatal accidents for which the Mine Safety and Health Administration has published fatality investigation reports was conducted to determine whether the accident may have been prevented by conventional or intelligent proximity. Multiple zone configurations for the intelligent systems were studied to determine how system performance might be affected by the zone configuration. Researchers found that 32 of the 39 fatalities, or 82 percent, may have been prevented by both conventional and intelligent proximity systems. These results indicate that, by properly configuring the zones of an intelligent proximity detection system, equivalent protection to a conventional system is possible.

The concept of microorganisms as chemical reagents (flocculants, flotation modifiers and flotation collectors) is quite new. Potential uses for microorganisms include their use in place of certain conventional flotation reagents and as flocculating agents in minerals engineering processes. In addition, in some studies micro-organisms have been used to modify mineral surfaces and, thus, the flotation or flocculation of the minerals.

Since first introduced, the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) has been widely accepted as a tool for geologic characterization and mine planning. This paper discusses the application of the CMRR to another practical ground-control problem: extended cuts. Extended cuts, i.e., cuts greater than 6 m (20 ft) in length, are commonly used with remote-control continuous miners. Extended cuts can greatly increase productivity, but they have been associated with a number of fatal roof-falls. When extended cuts are attempted in weak roof material, the roof may collapse before it can be bolted Until now, it has not been possible to predict where conditions may not be suitable for extended cuts. In this study, data on the CMRR and extended-cut experience were collected at 36 mines in seven of the United States. It was found that, when the CMRR was greater than 56, deep cuts were routine in nearly every case. When the CMRR was less than 37, extended cuts were almost never taken, and, when the CMRR was between 38 and 56, extended cuts were sometimes, but not always, feasible. The data also show that extended cuts are less likely to be stable if either the entry span or the depth of cover increases.
