SEVERAL distinctions can rightfully be accorded the Bagdad enterprise. For one thing, it has the most romantic name among the Porphyry Coppers and this is said with all due deference to Copper Queen and Inspiration! Bagdad was one of the richest and most magnificent cities of the glamorous world of the Arabian Nights. The record does not say who was responsible for applying the name Bagdad to the company that in 191 1 took over the property of the Arizona-Nevada Copper Company; but whoever it was must have had visions (or at least hopes) of a fabulously profitable mine. So far as I know, Bagdad is the only Porphyry whose owners, or officials, ran afoul of the law because of alleged sins of omission or commission in vending shares of the company's stock. E. B. Bronson, of New York, had been interested in Bagdad since 1909; and, during the lean period of the 1930's he had, as president of the corporation, endeavored to raise needed funds by the sale of 140,000 shares of treasury stock. Some legal questions arose as to the need for registration under the Securities and Exchange Act; but, when Mr. Bronson finally filed a registration statement, the New York office of the Securities and Exchange Commission found 155 "deficiencies" in the document. According to the judge who later heard the criminal case against Bronson, no evidence was introduced to show that he had personally benefited "to the extent of one dollar." However, it was charged that the setup was such that he was in position to profit if he had wanted to! A somewhat quixotic position, it would seem. The geometry of these figures leaves no ambiguity and the method has the added advantage of being applicable to very small crystal units. JAN. 17-In what appears to be a general spirit of post-Christmas emotional malaise, most adult Americans have bidden farewell to the Forties and turned with no perceptible enthusiasm toward the Fifties. The dying decade had started amid a phoney war which verged on the romantic, stirred the pulse with excitement and seemed far away. A phoney peace dominates the new decade. The romance is no longer there. Nor is the excitement. Nor is the distance. While most of the world preferred to be chronologically correct and hold off for another year before celebrating the demise of the first half of the twentieth century, the United States with true competitive enterprise and a great whirl of words scurried into the second half a year early. This undue haste might perhaps have been dictated unconsciously by a yearning for the pattern of history to be repeated. For many centuries, ever since Roman times, the second half of most centuries tended to be far more tranquil than the first half. In Washington, Mr. Truman got on both sides of the mid-century line with all the aplomb of a good politician. He told Congress early in January that "the state of the Union continues to be good," as it nears "the midpoint of the twentieth century." Later he spoke of moving forward into the second half of the century. He promised an infinitely better life for everyone, whichever side of the mid-century line, and reaffirmed his prescription toward that end: assistance for small businesses; more houses for the middle-income groups; tougher anti-monopoly laws, retention of rent controls; development of natural resources; better insurance against the hazards of old age, idleness and unemployment; better medical care and education, civil rights legislation; new labor relations law and production payments to support farm incomes. All this was to be coupled with suggestions on how to balance the budget. The bloody and confusing 1940's had brought to most men's minds a fear of the future such as they had not known for centuries, and Mr. Truman's objective is to temper that fear. Only time will tell whether the terminal point of such a philosophy would or would not belie the old English proverb citing inability to both eat and have a cake. Brave words to the contrary, the national budget persisted in sliding off into the red. The smell of further inflation was equally persistent. And just to impart a little more zip to the trend, the American Federation of Labor announced its intention of seeking "substantial" and "large" wage increases this year. The AFL forewarns of a business slump after June and a 10¢ an hr wage in¬crease for each worker "will be enough to reverse the prospective downward trend and start a rise." Thus it goes-"the way to halt a drop in demand for labor is to raise the price of labor." Elsewhere in the harassed world, beleagured individualists in New York achieved a local triumph of sorts for one of the freedoms denied by the Soviet and Nazi systems-the right of escape, some escape at least, from the servitude to decibels. Grand Central Station weakened perceptibly at Christmas on its 5-min commercials and bore down heavily on "Hark, The Herald Angels Sing," and on New Year's Day capitulated entirely by abandoning the broadcasting of canned music and slugs of advertising slogans. In Europe, M. Bidault's Assembly majority fell away and newspaper accounts of the incredible monstrosities of political trials beyond the iron curtain were supplanted by headlines marking the birth of Princess Yasmin. The latter was surrounded by Byzantine splendor but otherwise showed no apparent deviation from the accepted norm. In Western Germany, Dr. Adenauer began to speak up more boldly, and the whole fabric of Allied policy towards the defeated enemy further dossolved under the impact of rivalry with the Russians. In the Far East both the Americans and British seem somewhat embarrassed by Chiang Kai-shek's refusal to lie down. Dual thinking regarding the "squalid and useless struggle in the China seas" is such that newspapers give sympathetic accounts to an American ship running supplies to the Communists at Shanghai while calling for help for the recognized Chinese government in Formosa. And with Britain recognizing Communist China they may well have to team up with Russia against the United States to kick the Chinese representative off the UNO Security Council, the Far Eastern Commission and the Allied Council in Tokyo. Far Eastern policy has never been a bipartisan matter and as General Chiang retreated to his final redoubts in Formosa and Hainan, a number of Republicans pecked away at Administration lassitude. Senator Smith advocated the occupation of Formosa and Messrs. Hoover and Taft asked for use of the Navy. Mr. Acheson has stood firm, however, against military aid. None the less, a study will be made of the Generalissimo's chances. Mr. Truman has a private purse of $75 million for the Far East and some $94 million in frozen ECA funds. Mr. Truman will likely trade some of this money for support of new Marshall plan appropriations, always mindful, of course, of Mr. Acheson's plan to drive a wedge between the Chinese and Moscow, and his wish to avoid any revival of imperialist nightmares throughout the Orient. After the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public aesayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a suffciently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present, small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition. Utah International's Shirley Basin Mine is located in the Southeastern High Plains of Wyoming at an elevation of about 7,100 feet. The Shirley Basin area is a gently rolling semi-arid land. The uranium ore zone occurs at depths ranging from 270 to 350 feet below the surface. Overburden consists of poorly consolidated sandstones, siltstones, and clays. Underground mining was begun in 1960. Conditions were made difficult by high rates of water inflow and ground support problems. The development of a solution mining I or in-situ leaching technique allowed underground operation to be abandoned in 1964. Solution mining provided limited production from 1963 to July 1970. In January, 1969, large scale development of open-pit mining was begun. A 1,200 ton per day mill went "on stream" in March, 1971.

Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. (written discussion).—It seems to me that thc young man must first be absolutely sure that the work he has taken up is to his liking and then I would advise that he get into the practical end of it and learn as much about it as he can as fast as he can. For instance, in the refinery business the college man, graduated in chemical engineering, should ground himself by going through the various departments in a refinery and working in them until he is thoroughly familiar with the operating problems. In a short time he would be able to apply many things which appear in the abstract form in his college work and this would opcn up an opportunity for him to capitalize on them, promoting his own interest. I do not criticize the present-day college men as a class, but I have found that many of them come into your plant with the idea that mere possession of a diploma should insure rapid promotion; in a short time they are impatient and usually leave. We have found in employing men that the single attribute most difficult to find in them is a lot of energy and whole-hearted interest in the work at hand, and it seems to me that if a man combines these with a careful technical training he should be fairly well equipped to gamble on his future. They must learn that the biggest satisfaction to be gained in life is in their work. Procedure for Attaining Objective of Young Petroleum Engineer H. B. Fell,+ Ardmore, Okla. (written discussion).—Of course, the first thing to be ronsidered in any proposition is the ultimate objective that is desired to be attained. 1 presume that the desired objective of most of the young men graduating in petroleum engineering will be that of chief executive of one of the companies in the petroleum industry, or one of the allied industries, or to become an independent oil producer, or oil refiner, or possibly an oil distributor. The next phase then to be considered is the procedure which should most logically be followed to attain the objeckive of the indivitlual, since in these cases these young men will have been trained in a course in petroleum engineering and it would logically be presumed that the attainment of their objective should be through the operating end of the branch of the business with which they are connected. The operating end is, of course, the department of each branch of the business that develops the resources, or refines the products, or distributes the products, from which the profits are derived, and is a part of any business which is filled with enough interesting work to appease the desires of the most ambitious young men. In order to get the best possible training it would appear to me that the place for a young man to start after graduation would be at the bottom of that branch of the industry which he expects to follow. For example, if he is going in the producing end he can gct no better training than is secured by starting as a roustabout in the ficltl, where he romes in constant rontact with the character of work that is necessary

The current focus of research and development in transportation industry is to use lightweight materials such as aluminium alloys for more structural components. In this regard, maintaining safety of the passenger and vehicle is the most important; therefore crashworthiness of components made of lightweight materials must be evaluated prior to sizable application of these materials. The focus of the present study is to understand failure and damage mechanisms during the axial crushing of aluminium tubes made of A1Mg3.5Mn alloy of 2 and 3.5 mm thickness. Due mainly to complexity of the crushed tubes, a microstructural approach is considered. In this study optical, stereo as well as scanning electron microscopy techniques have been used to study damage and failure mechanisms in these types of tubes, which are essential energy absorbing components in passenger vehicles.

"It is important to make a clear distinction on the scope of work of the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines (GMSG) guideline for sampling grinding circuits. Many mineral processing practitioners are familiar with the sampling and surveying of comminution circuits, in particular grinding circuits, for performance diagnosis and the identification of optimization potential. These surveys often provide information for population balance modelling of individual comminution and classification unit processes, and consequently require a large amount of information to calibrate and validate the unit models. As a result, these surveys are labour intensive, somewhat expensive, depending on internal capabilities of the mine site or company and have a long time span from initial planning to final reporting. They also require a high level of expertise to process the survey data, simulate the circuit and make sensible recommendations on follow up actions.As a result of these factors, full grinding circuit surveys are not a common occurrence at a large number of processing facilities, and several years may pass before follow up surveys are conducted. In the ensuing gap between surveys, the efficiency of the grinding circuit must often be taken on faith, and this is considered an unacceptable lapse in an environment of strained natural resources and low commodity prices.To support the rapid and productive energy efficiency analysis being promoted by the ICE working group, a much simplified survey and analysis process is required. The process reflected in the GMSG guideline is indeed more conducive to frequent analysis, at a skill level that is well within the capabilities of the average plant metallurgist. As a result, it becomes feasible to conduct mini-surveys of plant performance, which can be used to quickly and precisely diagnose the high level impact of process changes. These methods can also be manipulated by an experienced practitioner to provide sufficient information for modelling of the circuit to estimate the impact of process changes, allowing an initial rate and rank exercise to focus plant optimization efforts."

I N presenting this paper, the writer wishes to point out some of the difficulties and problems of geological work in that part of Saskatchewan in which outcrops are few. These problems are well known to all geologists who have made investigations in this region, but may not be so well known to those outside. A table of the strata as known in certain areas of Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces is given, with a brief discussion of some of the formations and beds about which there is little knowledge due to their being deeply buried and not exposed in the region. Comment with regard to possible oil and gas structures is made and some features of the structures in the Battleford and Simpson districts are described. The writer wishes to make acknowledgment to members of the Geological Survey of Canada to whose work in Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces reference is made, and to others who have made, or are making, valuable contributions to the stratigraphy of Saskatchewan. Mr. G. C. Webb has kindly furnished information regarding and materials taken from a well bored recently in the Paynton district. Special thanks are due to the Simpson Oil and Gas Company for permission to use much valuable information with regard to their wells and for the generous way in which the officials and staff co-operated with the writer. The opportunities the writer has had to visit many parts of the Province have been in connection with investigations for the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and through facilities provided by the Department of Soils of the University of Saskatchewan. For the purposes of this discussion, Central Saskatchewan may be considered as that portion of the Province extending from Township 16, with Regina, Moose Jaw, and Swift Current situated on or near the southern boundary, to Township 48, with Prince Albert and Lloydminster on the northern boundary. This region includes territory underlain by Cretaceous sediments and excludes the southern portion of the Province, where Tertiary beds underlie the surface and are exposed to an extent sufficient to permit a measure of systematic mapping.

"At present, flotation rate characterization follows standard measurements to identify the overall flotation performance looking at the feed, tailings and concentrate in flotation cells or banks. This classical approach does not take into account the evolution of the true collection rate down the flotation banks explicitly. The potential for identifying the impact of the mineral characteristics (size and liberation) as well as the effect of different manipulated variables (reagents, froth depth, gas dispersion) on the true flotation process remains hindered. Top-of-froth (TOF) measurements, which consist of sampling the first layer on the froth surface, have been used to characterize the mineral collected by true flotation in rougher banks. The information provided by TOF samples allows evaluating the floatable mineral evolution (grade, particle size, liberation) down the bank. In this work, an indirect approach to estimate the flotation rate along rougher flotation banks is proposed. The new approach is based on the decreasing of collected mineral grades (on top of froth) and the feed characteristics. Flotation rates per liberation classes were used to reconstruct the TOF grades from the feed information. This approach requires a simple froth surface sampling, without constraints typically observed during mass balance surveys and uncertainties on the mineral recovery estimation. The proposed methodology was successfully applied at industrial scale using TOF measurements together with QEMSCAN information."

A ventilation study was conducted at a western U.S. coal mine to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. This field study was part of a project investigating the effect of longwall face length and caving characteristics on longwall face air behavior and its potential movement on and off of the face. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) were done to describe air movement on the face and in the mined-portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob.

The management and operation of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are often neglected until the process plant has to shut down as a result of this negligence or as a result of a catastrophic failure as was the case during the recent TSF failure in North America.TSFs are often regarded as non-assets and do not receive the attention they deserve in terms of technical expertise and financial provision. A TSF is not a simple structure but a complex and dynamic structure that changes throughout its operational life. The operational life of a TSF is the period in which there is the greatest opportunity for risks to occur. The failure of a TSF is normally not as a result of a single event but as a result of a consequence of events. These events are often not recognised in time due to a number of factors.Process plants and slurry pumping systems are operated at suboptimal conditions in order to maintain throughput. At the same time, the tailings properties are compromised in terms of slurry density and particle size distribution amongst other things. Tailings deposition cycles and drying cycles are not well understood and the tailings management strategy is not well tuned in terms of maximising consolidation and improving in situ densities. Pond control is also neglected. These are aspects that form the keystone to the effective utilisation of available deposition area as well as the frequency and cost of future embankment raises.Apart from operational issues, forward planning in terms of budget requirements, increases in tailings throughput, embankment raises, pipe replacements, etc are normally put on the back burner. Available deposition space at the time seems to render this planning obsolete.The bottom line is that responsible tailings management and proper forward planning can limit liability and reduce the bottom line in terms of cents per ton if correctly implemented by suitably qualified tailings managers and engineers.The aspects that need to be considered as part of responsible tailings management are highlighted in this paper.CITATION:Boshoff, J, 2015. "In flotation, depressants are used to reduce the amount of gangue that reports to the concentrate and hence increase the selectivity of the flotation process. At the University of Cape Town extensive batch flotation tests are carried out to evaluate industrial depressants and standard procedures have been developed over the years.This study was conducted in order to develop an improved method for comparing depressants using machine vision as an aid. The modified method of batch flotation involved a test with prolonged intervals between scraping to allow more time for the froth to build up and mature.This method of testing showed increased differences between the flotation performance obtained as represented by grade recovery curves for carboxymethyl cellulose and guar depressants when compared to the standard method of testing with shorter scraping intervals. The improvement was attributed to reduced entrainment resulting from longer drainage time in the froth and therefore yielded a better test for comparing depressants on the basis of true gangue flotation with minimized entrainment. As expected, the sulphide recoveries were unaffected by the change in method. The machine vision system also added to the information obtained during these tests by recording bubble size trends throughout the tests which were later analyzed and related to the amount of flotable gangue in the froth. Modifications are recommended to improve the usefulness of machine vision in batch flotation."

This work investigates some suggested methods for blast vibration monitoring on a hard surface based on 53 tests on a vibration exciter. Errors in the measurement attributable to coupling have been described as function of frequency by the rock-to-mount (or coupling) transmissibility, ie ratio of the velocity of the vibration sensor mount to the velocity of the rock motion. Transmissibility has been measured from 2 to 200 Hz, at two vibration levels (5 and 20 mm/s), in four seismographs. Attachment methods with an anchor, thermal adhesive and gypsum plaster allow stiff rock-to-mount coupling. They ensure accurate measurements (errors below 0.3 dB) for frequencies commonly found in blasting (below 100 Hz) irrespective of the mount characteristics and the vibration level. Free laid mounts and sandbagged vibration sensors lead generally to a poor, weak coupling. Errors are non-linear errors with the input velocity, ie the operating frequency window narrows as the velocity of the ground increases. Free mounts follow ground motion acceptably well (error up to 0.4 dB) at both vibration levels and frequencies below 15 Hz. At higher frequencies, free mounts lead to the largest distortions with expected errors ranging from 0.8 to 6.6 dB. Sandbagging limits the expected errors below 1.3 dB, but it does not prevent large errors that can be up to 4.5 dB. This research concerns the mineralogical study of the physico-chemical reactions taking place at the pozzolan-binder interface. Lime binder/ pozzolan mixtures have been prepared for different natural zeolites. Analcime, phillipsite, chabazite, erionite, mordenite and clinoptilolite were mixed with portlandite and water, after which the progress in the reaction was quantitatively determined by thermogravimetrical analyses from three to 180 days. A first and important step was the thorough characterisation of the raw materials by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscope energy- dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) measurements of the zeolite minerals, Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) specific surface area measurements, grain-size analyses and cation exchange capacity measurements. Beside these zeolite samples with varying Si/Al ratios, two clinoptilolite samples exchanged to the calcium, potassium and sodium form were studied and the difference in their short- and long-term reactivity was assessed. Also the difference in reactivity between identical clinoptilolite samples ground to different grain sizes, obviously having different specific surface areas, was determined experimentally. The results indicate that the external surface area only influences the short-term reactivity, whereas the cation content has effect on both long- and short-term. Na-exchanged samples combine clearly more portlandite in the first few days, whereas the reaction slows down afterwards compared to K- and Ca-exchanged samples. The early reactivity of the unexchanged zeolite samples could be explained by these two parameters, but their long-term reactivity seemed to be related to their Si/Al ratio. Samples with zeolites rich in Si reacted faster then their Al-rich counterparts.

The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe constitutes the world&apos;s second largest reserve of platinum group elements (PGE) after the Bushveld Complex in neighbouring South Africa. Within the Great Dyke, economic concentrations of PGE are restricted to sulphide disseminations of the Main Sulphide Zone (MSZ), which are currently mined at the Ngezi, Unki, and Mimosa mines. Near-surface oxidized MSZ ores have a large potential. Their total resources are in the range of 160-250 Mt; however, all previous attempts to extract the PGE from this ore type have proved uneconomic due to low PGE recoveries (<< 50 per cent) achieved by conventional metallurgical methods. Within the ores of pristine, sulphide-bearing MSZ, the PGE are bimodally distributed. Platinum occurs mainly in the form of discrete platinum group mineral (PGM) grains (mainly bismuthotellurides, sulphides, and arsenides), whereas approximately 80 per cent of the Pd (and some Rh) is hosted in pentlandite. Within the oxidized MSZ ores, the PGE are polymodally distributed. Whereas the arsenide- and sulphide-PGMs that make up approximately 25 per cent of the original Pt content of the ore largely remain stable (relict PGMs), the remaining PGMs are disintegrated. The base metal sulphides are destroyed, partly releasing their base metal and PGE contents, and are replaced by iron oxides or hydroxides. Unspecified amounts of the PGE are redistributed and either form secondary PGMs, are found in chemically and mineralogically ill-defined (Pt/Pd) -oxides or hydroxides, or in iron-hydroxides, Mn-Co-hydroxides, and in secondary silicates. The problematic processing of oxidized MSZ ores is attributable to their complex nature and polymodal distribution of the PGE, prohibiting a significant upgrading of the ores by conventional metallurgical methods. Therefore, only bulk leaching methods are viable for ore treatment, and novel metallurgical methods have to be developed for the processing of these ores. Our ongoing work aims at locating the PGE in their mineralogical form in order to understand the mineralogical balance of the PGE in the ores and thereby facilitate the evaluation of metallurgical options for their recovery. A short overview on options and recent advances regarding the recovery of the PGE from oxidized ores is given.

As part of its program of petroleum production research the Federal Bureau of Mines has long been engaged in the study and development of systems of analysis of oilfield waters (8, 12, 20, 21, 22, 27, 30).21 However, many of the early chemical procedures developed by the Bureau and widely adopted by the petroleum industry are time consuming, and some are unreliable for determining certain constituents found in California oilfield waters. Because of the need for more rapid and more accurate methods having greater sensitivity with low concentrations of some constituents, a study has been made by the Bureau&apos;s Petroleum Research Laboratory at San Francisco, in developing new techniques and modifying previously published techniques for analyzing oilfield waters by flame spectrophotometric, potentiometric, and colorimetric methods. Test solutions were synthesized for testing the suitability and accuracy of the procedures, and the effect of interfering ions. These solutions contained known quantities of characteristic constituents of oilfield waters including sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, lithium, strontium, barium, sulfate, chloride, bromide, iodide, carbonate, bicarbonate and borates in a wide range of concentrations. The compositions of these synthetic brines are listed in table 22. Many California oilfield waters contain salts of petroleum-derived organic acids and several synthetic oilfield waters also were prepared to which large quantities of naphthenates or salts of petroleum acids were added.
