The importance of grinding as a unit operation in all industry has caused much effort to be expended toward improving the facility with which grinding can be done. Endeavor has continued nearly 100 years to formulate laws governing crushing and grinding. This has not been without controversy. However, grinding is an experimental science and our useful knowledge originates in experience. The recorded experience is grinding history. Today, many types of size reduction equipment, each with variations, are available to industry. Frequently, more than one type of grinding equipment will meet a requirement of grinding. However, an economic evaluation of installation and operating costs generally indicates a preferred type. The selection of grinding equipment requires' a consideration of the purpose in grinding, the characteristics of the material to be ground, equipment available for grinding, and the manner in which it can be applied best.

Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some 2,000 years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today, more mineral commodities are mined in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions. Old industries are generally considered stodgy with mature and stagnant technologies. Costs tend not to decline as in newer industries, and may even increase with real wages. Costs are particularly expected to rise in the case of mining as the best mineral deposits are depleted. Thus, mining is often thought of as a sunset industry, destined to decline over time as the resource base is depleted. These perceptions have several important implications. They argue against economic policies that rely too heavily on mining and mineral processing to foster growth and development. The best and the brightest young people, along with society's other valuable resources, should be encouraged to enter newer industries. There the technological opportunities and the prospects for growth are more promising. These perceptions also suggest that the ability to compete in the mining industry depends largely on the quality of a company's or country's mineral deposits. Mining will take place first in countries with the lowest-cost deposits. Once these are exhausted, mining will shift to countries with the next best deposits. From time to time, new discoveries may also produce a shift in the location of mining, [ ] and may even for a time keep the costs and prices of mineral products from rising. Over the longer term, however, rising costs and prices are inevitable, as the world is forced to exploit poorer mineral deposits.

Platinum electrodes are not inert as originally thought to be. The reactivity of platinum electrodes can explain their erratic behavior in many electrochemical measurements of metallurgical interest, e.g., in flotation systems, streaming potential measurements, contact-angle measurements, and in leaching systems. The anomalous behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in aqueous systems was studied through Eh and pH measurements in water-oxygen, iron-water-oxygen and manganese-water-oxygen systems. Stability relations between Fe++ and Fe(OH)3 and between Fe(OH)2 and Fe(OH)3 were studied to judge the correspondence between experimental and theoretical equilibrium lines. The practicality of redox potential measurements in estimating ferric-ferrous ratios in aqueous systems was investigated along with their suitability as indicators in leaching operations, e.g., the removal of iron by aeration from manganese leach solutions.

From the MAP3S Precipitation Chemistry Network data bank five years of data from January 1, 1977 to December 31, 1981 have been analyzed. No definite trend has been observed in the concentrations and the total depositions in the analyzed period. Comparison between the weekly and event samples show that the weekly samples could underestimate the total deposition. Preliminary results show that there is a reasonably good correlation between the precipitation composition and the emissions feeding the air in which the precipitation is formed.

The western phosphate field, one of the United States' great mineral resources, lies within the western states of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. This Permian sedimentary deposit has been known since the turn of the century and since the 1920's has been mined for its phosphate content. Isolation from markets and relatively high mining costs have restricted development as compared to eastern United States deposits, but nevertheless a significant western phosphate industry has developed. Geographically the deposit covers an enormous area of about 337 000 km2 (130 000 sq miles). It covers Idaho from Pocatello east- ward, western Wyoming to the eastern flank of the Wind River mountains, and extends well into southwestern Montana and into a large area of northeastern Utah north of the Uinta Basin and east of the Salt Lake valley.

In 2007, Rosebud Mining Company (RMC) opted to extend the reserve base of Tracy Lynne Mine by developing through a sandstone channel. The extension provided access to approximately 6 million additional recoverable tons (approximately 8 years of mining) which originally had been deemed inaccessible. An evaluation of the mine?s existing ventilation system, which was designed to meet the needs of the original limited reserve, concluded that two ventilation shafts would likely be required to adequately ventilate the projected workings in the expanded reserve. To assist in the evaluation, a ventilation model of the mine was developed using Ohio Automation?s ?ICAMPS MineVent? software based on field data from Tracy Lynne Mine, prior ventilation survey experience at similar RMC mines, and relevant published sources. Model results suggested that the most economical shafts would be an 8-ft diameter return and a 4-ft diameter intake. Unfortunately, issues related to property leasing and shaft site permitting caused construction delays. Therefore, the model was also used and proved to be effective in prioritizing interim ventilation upgrades which could be implemented in order to maintain coal production. Model results indicated that the best interim upgrades included rehabilitating restricted entries and damaged stoppings and replacing the main fan with a higher pressure fan. From late 2010 to mid-2012, all interim upgrades and shafts were implemented. Current models and mine experience indicate that ventilation will not be the limiting factor for mining the additional reserve.

INTRODUCTION The term "Rapid Underground Excavation" is generally associated with high speed tunnel advance with large volumes of excavation, and indeed this is the type of work for which most of the recent innovations in methods and new machinery have been developed. However, the term applies as well to any underground excavation process that results in an earlier project completion than would be expected with conventional methods, and hopefully with a decrease in total unit excavation cost. Often significant progress has been made during the primary stages of an underground construction project and then an inordinate amount of time and effort has been expended on small units of "miscellaneous" excavation which has delayed the overall project completion and escallated overall unit costs. Construction at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission for underground testing frequently requires significant amounts of so called "miscellaneous mining" such as short access drifts, cross cuts, alcoves, niches and concrete keyways. Many of the keyways must be excavated without disturbing the rock beyond the excavation lines and construction scheduling often dictates that much of the work must be accomplished without disturbing sensitive electronic equipment already installed. The coal mining industry must be able to compete with alternate sources of fuel for the utility and industrial customers. If the industry is unable to control transportation costs, either due to government interference, or for other reasons, then mining costs must be kept down. Australia, South Africa, Canada, (and later Colombia) will take larger shares of the export market if mining costs are not kept competitive. The government's environmental regulations must be met without incremental increases in mining costs. Entrepreneurial instincts must be retained by the industry to provide for their investment in the future. What are the Problems with Existing Research? Government funding for coal mining research has been reduced or virtually eliminated. BCR (Bituminous Coal Research) is now a membership- supported organization, but its primary focus has been on health and safety-oriented research. BCR, however, is now attempting to widen its scope and conduct other types of research. There are almost no funds in EPRI's (Electric Power Research Institute) program for coal mining research. Large mining companies do some research for their own purposes and needs, but this is proprietary and therefore results are not shared with the remainder of the industry. The mining industry as a unit is not undertaking productivity (systems) oriented research in any common or cohesive manner.

In spite of distractions from glam-our areas (ground control, computers, etc.), excavating and bulk handling in mining remains paramount but is now undergoing dramatic advances. The massive intervention of mining and civil engineers as "engineer-users" into the tight, exclusive, and specialized bond between the equipment operator ("operator-users") and the manufacturer (mechanical engineers "and sales "reps") has now occurred. Three developments have accelerated this: 1) larger, more costly, complex, specialized, and innovative equipment; 2) a more profound understanding of the equipment, operations, and working conditions (encumbered space); and 3) a concurrent thrust into "high-tech," (automatic and remote controls, sensors, automation, artificial intelligence, and even robotics) and human factors (workload intensity, work-station design). This has produced a well-defined professional discipline, including construction and even military engineering. The mine plant, and to a lesser extent, the mine face, is now being monitored. Equipment conferences, journals, and centers at universities and agencies have multi-plied. The discipline's impact on future mining now becomes more apparent.

Laterite ores, rich in essential metals like nickel, iron and cobalt, are a crucial resource for modern technology. However, the extraction of nickel from laterite ores is a complex process due to their intricate mineral compositions and low nickel concentrations. This paper presents the results of a study to understand the leaching behavior of preroasted laterite ore and the impact of roasting on leaching kinetics. The ore was subjected to roasting at 280 and 610 °C for a duration of three hours, followed by leaching in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) under atmospheric conditions. The results show that preroasting the ore at 610 °C significantly improved the recovery of nickel during leaching, with recovery rate of up to 93 percent, and the leaching process of the preroasted ore was primarily controlled by diffusion through the ash layer. The activation energy values were found to be 20.97 kJ/mol for the ore roasted at 280 °C, and 18.97 kJ/mol for the ore roasted at 610°C. These findings suggest that preroasting can enhance the leaching performance of laterite ore, potentially paving the way for more efficient and sustainable nickel extraction processes.

As energy requirements in the United States expand with the growth of the Nation, use of coal also can be expected to increase. This optimistic outlook for the coal industry is based on our vast reserves of high quality coals and the possibility of converting coal to end uses other than electricity and metallurgical coke. Potentially, millions of tons of coal might be needed in the form of gas and liquid fuels to supplement our reserves and imports of these natural products. Exactly when they will enter the economy on a large scale depends on many factors. On January 1, 1960, the estimated remaining reserves of coal were 1-1/2 trillion tons, about 50 percent of which is bituminous coal. In 1965, the production of bituminous coal and lignite passed the 500-million-ton mark, emphasizing the steady upward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons, and if the present rate of increase continues within the next five years, output should pass the alltime high of 631 million tons achieved in 1947.

WISEDA Ltd. has introduced a 220 ton capacity, two-axle rear dump, diesel-electric truck for the world-wide large open-pit mining industry. Design features and components selected in the development of this vehicle will be presented along with operating experience and a brief history of rear dump truck evolution.

"INTRODUCTION The paste plant is located at the Barrick Goldstrike mine in Northern Nevada on the Carlin Trend. The Goldstrike property consists of an open pit and an underground mine; along with two processing facilities: a roaster and an autoclave. The underground portion of the mine produces approximately 1,800,000 ore tons per year and approximately 400,000 ounces. The mine is broken up into four distinct zones: Banshee, Meikle, Rodeo and Northpost. The current paste plant services both the Rodeo and Northpost zones. Development of the conceptual designs and permit approval for this plant was an extensive process that took over a decade to complete. A testing program was developed in conjunction with this process and implemented throughout to ensure the following metrics were achieved: ensure no environmental impact, material available onsite would be able to flow through the pipe to all required locations, and that this material could achieve the appropriate final strength. PLANT AND UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION This is the first paste plant to be built in Nevada. The paste plant at Goldstrike began construction in January 2012 and was completed in March of 2013. This plant was constructed to service the Rodeo side of the underground mine which previously utilized a cemented rock fill (CFR) plant to meet their backfill needs. However, in March of 2013, the same month the plant was commissioned, the raise that fed this CRF plant was mined out in a planned phase of the adjacent open pit. This made the switch to paste all the more difficult as it was being relied on for as the sole source of backfill production even though the system yet to be fully tested and optimized. The plant was designed to be fed with onsite Roaster tailing which would be thickened and then mixed with cement and fly ash. The plant was designed to pump 177 tons of paste per hour with a utilization of 65%. The original design specifications for the paste were 77% solids with varying binder contents depending on where the paste was being placed"

About 1/3 of the world's supply of phosphate rock is produced in a relatively small area of the Florida peninsula east of Tampa. Until this past year, a circle with a radius of about 25 miles and centered on Bartow would encompass the major producing areas. During the past year producing areas have opened in North Florida which promise to vie with the Polk-Hillsborough County area in terms of proven reserves. In addition, new phosphate production is planned for counties to the south and west of the present fields. From the existing production areas, however, more than 19 million long tons of phosphate were mined in 1965. As mining engineers most of you probably are familiar with the methods of mining and beneficiating the pebble phosphate rock. You thus recognize that, although some water quality problems may arise from these processes, there is no potential air pollution problem. To make an economically useful product, however, further processing must take place. It is from this additional processing that potentially damaging materials may be discharged to the atmosphere.

This paper discusses the utilization of automation to increase productivity of continuous miners. Automation techniques are used during the design stage to decrease the time required and ensure the accuracy of the design. This is followed by automated manufacturing processes to reduce manufacturing time and improve the quality and consistency of parts. Combined, the result is a more reliable machine which can provide ongoing production capability. With the use of automation to enhance operator effectiveness and monitoring machine condition the productivity of machines is also improved.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the publicly available health and safety policies of 26 mining companies to determine the quantity of health and safety (H&S) practices that mining companies encourage in relation to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. A thematic content analysis of the policies identified elements and practices within the text. On average, companies communicated information on about 7 elements (range 1–14, standard deviation = 3.49) and discussed 15 practices (range 2–34, standard deviation = 9.13). The elements in which companies highlighted the most practices were risk management, emergency management, leadership development, and occupational health. A discussion of the policy trends shows areas that mine sites can improve upon within their Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, in addition to encouraging the use of both leading and lagging indicators to manage health and safety performance. INTRODUCTION Mining companies and their employees are expected to identify and manage risks at their worksites to ensure the health and safety (H&S) of everyone at the site. The primary mechanism in place to control these risks is a company’s health and safety management system (HSMS) (Boyle, 2012). Broadly, an HSMS is a set of standard, interrelated, and interacting elements used to promote and achieve occupational H&S goals (ANSI/AIHA Z-10, 2012; BS OHSAS 18001, 2007). The practices conveyed within an HSMS are expected to minimize incidents, injuries, illnesses, and even save worker lives (Alsop and LeCouteur, 1999; Arocena and Núñez, 2010). In the United States, both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulate and encourage aspects of an HSMS (US Federal Register, 2011, 2010). Many HSMS documents (i.e., Chemical Industries Association, 1995; Health and Safety Executive [HSE], 1995; International Labour Office [ILO], 2001) attribute the source of their basic management system to Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model of continuous quality improvement and organize their practices within this cycle (Johnson, 2002). The PDCA cycle is a well-adopted approach in health and safety management and promotes continuous learning and adaptability (Robson et al., 2007)."

The mechanism of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite was studied in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by AES and XPS, and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by micro-flotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

Exploration expenditures in Alaska last year amounted to $8.9 million. This was comparable to 1985's $9.1 million. Development expenditures dropped 29%, $24.3 million in 1986 vs. $34.1 million in 1985. The exploration industry is restructuring and stabilizing after the loss of major mineral firms during the last few years. These included Anaconda Minerals, Asarco, Hecla Mining, Enserch Exploration, Phillips Minerals Division, Exxon Minerals, Noranda Inc., General Crude, Mohawk Oil & Gas, Inspiration Development, Teton Exploration, and St. Joe Minerals Division. Some of these companies were mineral subsidiaries of oil companies and were either dissolved or redirected to programs outside of Alaska. However, recent entry exploration firms include Echo Bay Mines Ltd., Long Lac Minerals, and Exvenco. They are busy evaluating prospects and mineral developments in the southeastern panhandle. In the 1970s, about $254 million was spent on Alaska mineral exploration. Of this, about 5% ($12 million) was for nonmetallics and coal, about 26% was directed at precious metals ($66 million) mainly gold, and 69% ($175.3 million) for the base metals zinc, copper, molybdenum, tin, tungsten, and nickel. Since the early 1980s, trends have reversed. Of the nearly $196.3 million spent from 1981-1986, 48% has been for precious metals ($94.3 million) and 40% on nonmetallics and coal. In the last two years, nearly 70% of the Alaskan exploration dollar has been spent in search of precious metals. Three gold skarns were explored during the year - the Nixon Fork project in western Alaska (Battle Mountain Mining Co.), the Nebesna and Rambler lodes of the northern Wrangell Mountains (Nebesna Mining Partners), and the Zackley project near Paxson in southcentral Alaska (Nerco Minerals). Nearly 7.6 km (25,000 ft) of diamond and rotary drilling were conducted on these three properties. Over the last three years there has been an increase in mining congress and conferences focusing on water management. Water in mining is a key concern for mine managers and operations, and we are now seeing this operational dilemma escalated to the level it deserves. According to Frost & Sullivan research, mining water and wastewater treatment and its related technologies will be a U$3.6 Billion global market in 2016, which translates the importance of this issue. Looking at the current mining trends, some factors increased the importance of water in mining operations, including: ? Future mining investments will be located in geographical locations where water is scarce (water stressed areas) ? A decline in grade will increase the intensity of mineral processes and therefore increase the use of the water ? Increased sustainability and regulations will extend the control/monitoring of water during the entire mine life cycle representation of the mine water flow system. "The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."
