In March 1937 the entire country was shocked by news of an explosion of gas in a New London (Tex.) schoolhouse, which resulted in the death of 280 pupils and 14 t eachers. The Government investigators of this disaster believed that the cause was the ignition and explosion of a large volume of explosive natural gas-air mixture that had accumulated in a poorly ventilated space beneath the first floor of the main school building and that this accumulation was due to leakage from gas lin suspended underneath the floor to carry the gas supply to the school.!i/ For some years there has been a potential explosion hazard in school houses and other buildings that are supplied with water from deep wells in certain parts of Illinois. Notwi thstand.ing the disaster at New London, Tex., and the fact that there had been gas ignitions at four water wells in different parts of the State, the explosion hazard in schools and other buildings was not fully recognized until a few months after the disaster in Texas, when an explosion occurred in the settling basin of the municipal water works of Clinton, Ill., and another in a pump house of the municipal water works in Normal, Ill, The explosion in the settling tank of the municipal water works in Clinton, Ill., occurred on August 12, 1937, and a.id considerable damage to the settling tank, but fortunately no one was injured. At the time of this explosion rapairs'and aJ.terations to the water plant were in progress, and 10 men were employed in the immediate vicinity of the settling tank. Two of these men were enlarging a hole in the concrete side with an air hammer for the installation of a larger discharge line.

[The growing importance of the Sundence (Jurassic) formation an a source of oil, in the Rocky Mountain area has prompted the making of a series of porosity determinations of core samples collected. from the reservoir sands of the Lance Creek oil field, Niobrara. County, Wyo. These analyses are preliminary to a stud of fluid and energy relations in the Basal Sundance reservoir of that field, and the determinations of porosity will be used in subsequent studies requiring, calculations of the volumetric capacity of the reservoir and estimation of the reserves of oil and gas. However, the porosity characteristics an of the Sundance sands in the Lance Creek field are factory that affect the solution of many current practical problems of development and operation. Primarily for that reason but also because it is recognized that porosity values of different oil-production sands are of widespread interest throughout the industry, the results of the initial work have been presented in tabular and graphic form with no attempt to evaluate their significance as they relate to the production history of the field.]

The heats of formation of anhydrous barium carbonate (witherite), strontium carbonate (strontianite), and lead carbonate (cerussite) were determined by solution calorimetry. The solution mediums were hydrochloric acid for barium and strontium carbonates and perchloric acid for lead carbonate. The heats of formation at 298.15° K are as follows: BaCO3 -297.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole; SrCO3 -294.6 ± 0.5 kcal/mole; and PbCO3 -168.0 ± 0.3 kcal/mole.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to separate the F from byproduct Zn concentrates obtained from fluorspar (CaF2) production, as part of the Bureau's effort to devise efficient, environmentally acceptable technology for recovering Zn from resources considered undesirable by Zn producers. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) was found to be effective in F removal, while ammonium carbonate [(NH4)2C031 was not. The most important variables for reducing the necessary residence time were found to be temperature and agitation. Optimum leaching conditions were 75° C and 500 r/min for 2 h at 40 pct solids with 0.2 g acid per gram of concentrate, which resulted in a 98.3-pct F extraction. Zinc losses during F removal were in the range of 2 to 3.3 pct. Other elements such as Fe, Cd, Ca, and Cu were also partially dissolved. About 93 pct of the F was removed from the leach solution by neutralization and precipitation with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. Additional treatment might be necessary to limit the buildup of soluble elements in the recycled leach solution.

Beryllium occurs in the Honeycomb Hills area in volcanic tuff similar to the more extensive berylliferous tuff occurring 20 miles east at Spor Mountain , Juab County , Utah . Samples from the two areas have been mineralogically examined to ascertain whether they have similar characteristics . The Honeycomb Hills samples showed the presence of beta- Be ( OH ) 2 , as well as an amorphous berylliferous substance , whereas in the Spor Mountain tuff the beryllium- bearing minerals are hydrated bertrandite and berylliferous saponite .

1. A total of 14,413 mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Nearly half (48.9%) were sand and gravel operations, followed by stone (28.5%), coal (14.7%), nonmetal (5.7%), and metal mines (2.1%). 2. Mine operators reported 240,000 full-time equivalent workers1 (down 3.9% from 1999). Independent contractors reported 42,000 full-time equivalent workers working on mine property (up 8.6% from 1999). Coal operators accounted for 26.8% of reported employee hours, followed by stone operators (25.9%) and sand and gravel operators (12.1%). 3. Eighty-four (84) work-related mine fatalities occurred in 2000 compared to 90 the year before. •The mine fatality rate was 29.8 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers compared to a fatality rate of4.6 per 100,000 employees for all private industry. •Thirty-one percent (31%) of the fatalities occurred in underground work areas, which account for only17% of total employment. •Although the largest number of fatalities (28) occurred among miners who work for coal operators, coal contractor employees had the highest fatality rate (61.1 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers). 4.There were 10,839 nonfatal lost-time injuries reported to MSHA, occurring at a rate of 3.8 injuries per 100full-time equivalent workers, and resulting in a total of 417,918 lost workdays.2 •Among all employees,3 the highest injury rate occurred among coal operator employees (5.6 nonfatal injuries per 100 full-time equivalent workers). •The highest percentage (34.7%) of nonfatal lost-time injuries were due to handling materials (e.g., over-exertion in lifting, pulling, or pushing objects), which also accounted for the greatest percentage of lost workdays (29.3%). •Among the most frequently occurring injuries, the most severe (as measured by the median number of days lost) were associated with accidents involving falls of ground, the use of powered haulage, and slips or falls. •The most frequently reported part of the body injured was the back (22.9% of all injuries). Back injuries accounted for the highest percentage of lost workdays (21.6%). 5.Seven hundred sixty-seven (767) cases of occupational illness were reported to MSHA. •The most frequently reported illness was repetitive trauma, resulting in joint, tendon, or muscle inflammation or irritation (37.3%). •There were 155 (20.2%) illnesses reported as hearing loss. The majority (68.4%) of hearing loss cases occurred among surface workers. •Coal workers' pneumoconiosis accounted for 14.5% of reported illnesses.

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

"The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the American Gas Association investigating the relation of properties of gas oils to the gum-forming properties of carbureted water gas. The present report deals with the effects of operating practice on the composition of the light oils from carbureted water gas. A general outline of the gummy meter problem has been presented in a previous paper.*Carbureted water gas is a mixture roughly of 80 per cent water gas by volume and 20 per cent oil gas. The latter, though small in relative volume, supplies more than half of the heating value of the gas under the present-day standard. Therefore, it is logical that the oil used in the carbureting process and the operating practices involved should be subjected to scientific study. Many investigations***** bearing on the aspects considered in this paper have been carried out in the past."

"INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "During the coming winter, it is probable that many householders who have habitually been users of anthracite coal will be obliged to turn to some other fuel for heating purposes, because of the limited supply of anthracite. The next best fuel, from a standpoint of cleanliness and ease of operation, is coke, but here again the supply is inadequate and the householder will have to fall back on bituminous coal. Though bituminous coal has the dis¬advantage of being dirty to handle, requiring more care in firing, and of giving off considerable smoke, it will be more generally available, costs less, and in the better grades which will naturally find their way to the domestic market, is higher in heat value, and contains less ash than anthracite.Choice of CoalThere a variety of bituminous coals are available, the householder should choose a low volatile coal, such as New River, Pocahontas, or some other ""smokeless"" coal, or the British coal now being offered in the markets along the Atlantic seaboard. Though not necessary to have the coal sized, as is the case with anthracite, it will be found cleaner to use coal from which the fine dirt has been screened. If it is found that excessive dust is caused when firing the coal, this can be reduced by slightly wetting the coal at the front of the bin, as it is being used.Method of Firingusing bituminous coal instead of anthracite in the domestic furnace, it will be necessary to use an entirely different method of fir Instead of leveling the fuel bed and putting on fresh coal in an even layer over the entire fire box, the coked and partly burned coal remaining from the previous firing should be pushed as much as possible to one side of the box, and the fresh coal thrown into the empty side so as to leave some burning coal exposed. In this way the green coal is heated slowly, the volatile gases are given off gradually, and are ignited by the burninggoing to waste up the chimney unburned."

THE injury data and experience in this bulletin are presented in three general sections. The first section contains general and detailed data relating to 1948 injury experience in bituminous-coal and Pennsylvania anthracite mines, separately and combined into totals for all coal mines. The related employment, worktime, production, and productivity data are given in each breakdown of the statistical data. Tables 1 through 22 constitute a subsection and present statistics on number of injuries, frequency and severity rates, average severity, detailed and major causes of injuries, injury records of the coal-producing States, distribution of injuries by part of body, and distribution of injuries by days of disability. Tables 23 through 45, the second subsection, present injury experience in bituminous-coal mines by various selected factors of physical or operating conditions that ma contribute to the occurrence of injuries. The degree of mechanical loading, productivity, size of mine by number of men working and by tonnage mined, thickness of bed, length of shift, number of shifts, type of cap lamps, rating of mine as gassy or nongassy, type of ventilation, and combinations of these factors influencing mine safety are presented in this group of tables. Similar data on Pennsylvania anthracite mines are listed in tables 46 through 63, which comprise the third subsection. The second section of the report contains the generalized annual injury records of bituminous-coal, Pennsylvania anthracite, and all coal mines from the earliest available data through 1948. Tables 64 through 97 list the number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, injury rates, and causes of injuries on an industry basis, the long-term injury records of each coal-producing State, and the related employment, worktime, and production data.

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following; questions are arising n the minds of coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when storing coal? In regard to the loss of heating value of coal in storage, tests made by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh Gas, and Sheridan Wyoming coals. Results of the minerals survey indicate low potential for the discovery of placer gold along Deck Creek aid for copper, silver, and gold in PreTertiary rocks within the boundaries of the Lake Fork RARE II area. Potential for oil, natural gas, coal, and geothermal resources is negligible. No evidence of economic mineral resources was found during the examination of the study area, and no assays of rock or placer samples taken from the urea showed economic mineral values. There are no producing or developing mines within the boundaries o of the lake Fork study area. SETTING Mining Districts The Lake Fork RARE II area is on the eastern fringe of the Cornucopia Mining District, which is centered about 6 mi west. It is also on the western edge of the Homestead district, centered about mi east.

In the early nineties it was observed by several European investigators and by C. S. Rice4 that an explosion could be checked and would not propagate in the parts of a mine where shale or other inert dust was present in large amounts.5 After the disastrous Courrieres explosion in France that killed 1,100 men, coal-dust explosion tests were made in France in 1907 and in Great Britain in 1908 which resulted in the conclusion that if enough incombustible dust were properly spread throughout passageways charged with coal-dust, the propagation of an explosion by the coal-dust could be prevented. In 1908 the Federal government authorized the investigation of the causes of mine explosions and of possible methods of preventing them, with the result that during 1911 the United States Bureau of Mines, after making several tests, suggested that rock-dust be used in gassy or dusty bituminous coal mines. Since that time, experiments and investigations6 have proved conclusively that widespread explosions can be prevented in coal mines by efficient rook-dusting.

The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the Gibbs free energies of formation of chromous fluoride (CrF2), chromic fluoride (CrF3), and chromium (II,III) fluorides (CrF2.40 and CrF2.45) with high-temperature galvanic cells employing calcium fluoride doped with 1 mole-pct yttrium fluoride as the electrolyte. Free-energy changes were obtained from open-circuit potential measurements for the following cells: Cr, CrF2 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (a) NiO, NiF2 // CaF2 // CrF3 , Cr203 (b) CrF2 , CrF2.40 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (c) and CrF2 ?45 , CrF3 // CaF2 // NiF2, Ni (d) with the following overall reactions Cr(s) + NiF2 (s) = Ni(s) + CrF2 (s) (1) 3NiO(s) + 2CrF3 (s) = 3NiF2 (s) + Cr203 (s) (2) 5CrF2 (s) + NiF2 (s) = 5CrF2.4O (s) + Ni(s) (3) and 3.64CrF2.45 + NiF2 (s) = 3.64CrF3 (s) + Ni (s) . (4) These results were combined with the best available literature values of ?Gf° of NiF2, NiO, and Cr203 to deduce Gibbs free energies of formation for the chromium fluorides expressed as follows: ?Gf°(CrF2) = -179.31 + 24.33 X 10-3T ± 0.43 kcal-mole. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on samples from four potential platinum resources in southeastern Alaska to concentrate platinum and other precious metals. Thin Investigation was done as part of the mission of the Bureau to insure an adequate supply of minerals to meet the Nation's needs. Petrographic studies and beneficiation methods including gravity concentration, froth flotation, and magnetic separation were used to determine mineral association and to attempt to concentrate the platinum values with a primary mineral value such as chromite, copper sulfide, or magnetite. A high-graded sample from the Salt Chuck copper sulfide deposit yielded the platinum-group metal concentrate; the maximum grade attained was 0.04 oz Pt and 1.5 oz Pd per ton of high-grade copper sulfide concentrate. The other samples yielded low-grade primary mineral concentrates with low platinum-group values, and/or the platinum-group metals did not concentrate with the primary mineral value.

Standard metering of electric arc furnaces usually uses root mean square (RMS) or true root mean square (TRMS) measurements for determining power. Only sinusoidal signals are accurately described by RMS meters, and dc or high-frequency components normally are lost in standard TRMS metering. This can lead to inaccuracies when electrical signals are not sinusoidal, contain dc components, or include fast risetime perturbations, as is the case with the electric signals from an electric arc furnace. Electric arc furnace electrical waveforms, observed in research carried out by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, show high-frequency components and significant deviations from sinusoids. These perturbations and distortions make metering difficult for standard power meters. The inaccuracies in metering can cause further problems if those sensors are used in control systems. For control strategies requiring rapid response, any averaging scheme loses information that can be used in control decisions. In order to obtain better signals for both monitoring and control, a study of instantaneous, RMS, and TRMS power monitoring devices was conducted. From this study it was concluded that precision integrated circuits should be used to obtain instantaneous power with a bandwidth of at least 25 kHz. The information from these devices is more representative than that of standard meters and can be used in predictive control.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 162 natural gas samples from 15 states and 4 foreign countries. Of the total samples, 154 were collected during calendar year 1992. The remainder were collected earlier, but releases granting permission to publish were not received until 1992. None of the analyses have been previously published in annual reports. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free-market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and chromatograph.
