Foreword Sir William Halcrow and Partners are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as Sub-contractor to the Contractor, Osmac, a joint venture formed by the Arab Contractors, Osman Ahmed Osman and Company of Cairo, and Tarmac International of London. Throughout the paper the term "Client" refers to the Employer, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction, which latterly became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Arab Republic of Egypt. At the time of writing of this paper only a few hundred metres of the tunnel have been driven, but the design is substantially complete. Introduction The Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel, which is at present under construction, will be a two-lane tunnel crossing beneath the Suez Canal approximately 15 km north of the town of Suez at El Shallufa. It will become the first permanent connection across the Canal since 1967 and is visualised by the Egyptian Government as an early step in the development of the Sinai Desert along the eastern bank. The tunnel will carry pipelines for treated water and electric power cables to assist in this development. The tunnel, which will be 1640 m in length, is being driven through hard clay and mudstone using a tunnel shield fitted with hydraulic excavators. The primary lining is being constructed with precast, bolted reinforced concrete segments with an internal diameter of 10.4 m. The road deck structure and the walls of the air supply ducts beneath it are formed with precast, reinforced concrete units erected immediately behind the shield.

Dewatering wells producing iron-rich water experience rapid declines in yield and drawdown due to the formation of ferric (Fe3+) hydroxide deposits in well screens, pump intakes and riser pipes. Precipitation is caused by a combination of dewatering-promoted iron oxidation and iron oxidizing bacteria. Physical and chemical well rehabilitation techniques, as well as alternative well-construction and well development techniques, were evaluated in this study. The addition of acid downhole feed systems to dewatering wells that are prone to iron encrustation can, in many cases, prolong their operational lives up to 500% that of unacidified wells.

Damen Avenue to Roosevelt Road, the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), a Deep Tunnel Project for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago consists of 25,189 lin. ft. of 32 ft. tunnel with 1 ft. 0 in. concrete liner throughout. The 17,100 ft. main tunnel connects at both ends with two other Deep Tunnel contracts. A branch tunnel connecting to the mainstream tunnel, commences approximately 4,140 ft. from the construction shaft and runs 8,089 ft. south and terminates at the Racine Avenue Pumping Station. Shaft work consists of one 28 ft. 6 in. diameter construction shaft, one 3 ft. 6 in. diameter access shaft and 25 drop shafts-four of which have vent shafts. The drop shafts vary in diameter from 4 ft. 0 in. to 17 ft. 0 in. All shafts vary in depth to invert from 225 ft. to 235 ft. Work has been underway for 16 months and as of this writing the construction shaft and access shaft are complete. Seven shafts have been excavated and concreting operations have started in four of them. The starter tunnel is complete, the mining machine has mined 250 lin. ft. and the muck removal system is in full operation. The contractor for the project is a joint venture of Paschen/Morrison-Knudsen/Kenny. Paschen Contractors, Inc., Chicago, Illinois is the sponsor. The total contract amount is $107,837,300.00.

This paper presents some of the work associated with the reduction of employee exposure to diesel and blasting contaminants at an underground salt mine. The purpose of the paper is to outline the procedures recommended in resolving the problems associated with these contaminants. The first stage consists of a complete mine ventilation survey. The purpose of the survey is to identify any problems in the mine. The survey consists of air quality, air quality and ventilating pressure measurements taken throughout the mine. After completing the survey, the information is analyzed to identify problem areas and the possible causes. All available solutions to reduce the levels of contaminants are then explored and evaluated for feasibility. The PSU Mine Ventilation Simulator is then used to accurately simulate possible changes to the ventilation system. These ventilation projections are a useful tool to illustrate to the company and union personnel the possible benefits of various ventilation changes. This paper will illustrate the phases involved in making important and sometimes expensive ventilation decisions. Through the cooperative efforts of MSHA, company and union personnel, the levels of contaminants have been reduced by approximately 200 percent. As a result of these ventilation improvements, the company can now safely increase production approximately 25 percent.

A completed feasibility study executed by an independent agency can benefit a company in two ways. Inside the organization, it verifies the project staffs ideas and their concept of the facility. Outside the company, it can be utilized to obtain equity partners, debt financing, and other forms of credit. It is advisable to bring in a project execution contractor for the feasibility study. A project execution contractor is able to work with engineers to develop the project concept, process flowsheet, and best utilization of the site. By getting an early start on understanding a company's policies and working methods, a project execution contractor saves the company money since it does not have to go through the educational buildup twice. The contractor is a specialist in putting together a bankable document that can be taken to a financing source. It answers all the agency requirements on the first pass. In addition, the contractor can advise an owner on likely financing sources since he works on the worldwide market every day. A less obvious advantage of including the contractor in the study and predevelopment buildup stages is the importance of coordinating finance and technical input. The financing source influences equipment specifications, procurement, logistics, project schedule, cash flow, and liquidity. There are many surprises in store for any manager of a large international project involving worldwide financing and purchasing. The job does not have to be made more difficult by bringing in a contractor after all predevelopment steps are taken. The contractor can still work if the predevelopment steps have been done, even if he does not agree with them. But early contractor involvement is the preferable solution.

The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

Methods used for assay of gold values in resource estimation, grade control or downstream processing are based almost entire­ly on Fire assay or Aqua Regia techniques. Both these tech­niques frequently produce spurious results. The mechanism of error is explained. Major decisions are made based on this often flawed data. This is what our operating budgets and projected cash flows are based on. Project economics demands metallur­gical accountability for performance predicted. Accountants and more astute members of the board are often not sympathetic to gold out-tum from plant production which is occasionally or consistently less than that predicted. Equally importantly, better than budgeted gold out-tum, resulting from under assaying will produce reconciliation or accounting problems (surplus cash flow) often denying correct timing of expansion or acquisition. Both these scenarios can be avoided if 'real world' extractable gold values are presented to financial managers at all stages. Such extractable gold results are now possible, and compared to fire assay and aqua regia, the assays are faster, cheaper, simpler and more accurate.

Determining whether a railroad locomotive will skid under varying conditions is a fairly routine, pervasive problem. However, some of the equations provided are wrong, others are at best murky. All require correction or clarification. Skidding during heavy braking is a crucial safety problem, possibly resulting in loss of control and collision. It can also be an economic detriment, ruining wheels and tracks and, by inhibiting acceleration, causing reduced full-speed times. While skidding is less likely for rubber-tired equipment, a comparable problem exists for tractor-trailers operating on poor surfaces. The primary reference is to the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (pp. 14-11, Eqs. 7 and 8), which is taken as authoritative and normative (Brantner, 1973). Fundamentally, the physical weight of the locomotive can never be negative (-). However, based on this reference it can be negative on adverse grades, during braking (Eq. 7), and on favorable grades, whether accelerating or braking (Eq. 8). Additionally, it should be noted that the term rW should be Rw. To avoid having the locomotive weight turn out negative, "absolute value" brackets must enclose the right-hand expression of both equations. Also, the weight of locomotive can be greater than the right-hand side value introducing the common "greater than or equal to" symbol (>_). Mining projects which contain sulfide mineralization face increasing regulatory hurdles due to environmental concerns over acid rock drainage (ARD) and the ability of long-term reclamation to protect water quality. Among regulatory agencies, much of the perception about sulfide projects has been based on conditions at historic mining sites at which little or no effort was made to control ARD. With proper design measures, ARD production can be greatly reduced or eliminated. The science of ARD prediction and control must be expanded to enable mine planners to anticipate the effect of various facility design options on ARD potential. Some common-sense examples of geochemical prediction techniques and mitigation measures for waste rock dumps, spent ore heaps, and mine pits are described.

An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

Exploration The technology of underground construction and particularly of tunneling, both now and in the future, starts with knowledge of the properties of the medium surrounding the tunnel. Although we are trying to develop machines that can excavate tunnels independently of the properties of the medium, and although we may achieve some success in this direction, we seem always to be brought up short by a paradox: With increasing sophistication of machines and with increasing complexity of construction jobs, our methods are likely to become more sensitive rather than less sensitive to changes in the medium. I suspect that the need for more precise knowledge of subsurface conditions in advance of construction will increase rather than decrease as time goes by. In the recent anniversary issue of Engineering News Record, Probing the Future, Senior Editor Bill Jacobus prophesies highly sophisticated devices to probe the unknowns of the earth's soil and rock materials. He envisions that "drill holes to obtain borings will give way to rock-melting coring devices". He may be right; it is hard to argue the accuracy of predictions of the future. The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota's taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota's Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. Hiring trends in the construction materials industry have remained steady through the years, with some seasonal and geographical variances. However, after several years of a depressed market, the base metals industry has begun to actively hire only over the past two years, due to the continued strength in the prices of copper, lead, zinc, molybenum, etc. The expanding precious metals industry, which for the most part escaped the depressed markets of the mid-1980s, actually preceded the base metal companies in hiring of engineers and operations personnel. The coal industry has not seemed to rebound much from the cutbacks of the early 1980s. And the uranium industry, which began its decline a year or two earlier than the other mineral industries, has remained nearly nonexistent in the United States. In nearly all of the mineral industries, new hires have been mostly in the engineering and operations areas, not exploration.

Membrane technology has been available for about 30 years, but has been used very sparingly within the general mining industry. However, recent developments in polymer chemistry, spiral wound element construction, pretreatment equipment and element cleaning techniques have improved the reliability and robustness of membrane based systems. These improvements have expanded the potential to use this "new" technology to enhance critical recoveries of gold and silver in heap leaching operations or in the extraction circuit. Another opportunity for the mining industry will be to use membrane technology in new processes like controlling organic acids or ammonium thiosul­fate to enhance gold and silver extraction during leaching opera­tions. Finally, the most common use for membrane technology is for the control of mining water balance and acid mine drainage issues. Polymeric membranes, specifically thin-film composites, have been developed that will purify, fractionate or concentrate gold or silver. Recent applications have been developed for spi­ral wound modules that operate across the pH spectrum from 0 to 14. Systems using membranes have been constructed that operated on feed streams from 200° C to 3000 centipoise. Most recently, membrane based systems have been pilot tested suc­cessfully to purify solvents, like LIX. Opportunities exist to apply membrane technology to concen­trate gold and silver cyanide solutions with thin-film composite Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes at elevated pH values above 10. Incorporating membrane technology could allow one to increase production without incurring additional expansion of the gold extraction side of the process. Furthermore, free cyanide is not rejected by the Reverse Osmosis membranes, but other inorganic salts are rejected 98+%, thereby, allowing an essentially ion free, except for the free cyanide, to be recirculat­ed back to the heap leach operation for enhanced extraction.

Theoretical research, laboratory tests and practical experience confirm the possibility to stabilise the excavated tunnel front by suitably composed slurries even in coarse ground with extremely high permeability. The fluid assures dependable repartition of the pressure, low torque of the cutting wheel and small perturbances of the original ground structure. Very easy access to the front, for tool repair or removal of obstacles, are other features of the WF-Hydroshield concept. For soft ground, the Hydrojet (excavation by immersed slurry jets) permits still further improvements. Field experiences in very mixed face conditions are related. Measured soil subsidences in homogeneous, loose sands above Hydroshield-driven tunnels are compared to calculated values. Dependable shield tail seals, which are a necessary condition for work without compressed air in the tunnel, and an original repair kit are presented. The aim to liberate shield driving from hazards of narrowly defined soil conditions and to broaden the range of applications led to a series of bentonite shield machines, derivated from the initial slurry type, such as Dense Mud Shield, Earth Pressure Balance Shield or shields with hard rock cutterheads. Similar to these constructions, overall stability of the front was the major concern in developing the Hydroshield. Rapid excavation includes rapid support and is the central theme of this paper. Over the last few years, enormous strides forward have been made in the excavation and material handling aspects of underground excavation. However, the technology necessary to support these rapidly created openings has lagged behind the other aspects. This paper would attempt to bring you up-to-date on the progress made in bringing ground support using shotcrete into the same productivity rates as the other cyclic operations. Shotcrete has become an acceptable material for temporary and permanent support for undergound openings. However, coarse aggregate shotcrete has been an expensive construction material. It has been confined in the main to difficult ground conditions where conventional methods of support have proved to be even slower and more expensive than shotcrete. There are two main factors influencing the productivity of shotcrete equipment. (1) Structural shotcrete as opposed to gunite requires 40% to 45% rock minus 3/4" in the mix design. Newmont Gold Company uses centralized carbon handling facilities to strip loaded carbon from five mills and four leach facilities located along a 38 mile stretch of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. Both Zadra and AARL elution processes are employed at this centralized facility which is located near the company's Gold Quarry operations. The Zadra elution circuit was commissioned in 1985 and later expanded in 1987. This circuit can strip carbon at a rate of 24 tons per day. The AARL elution circuit, commissioned in 1988, also has the capacity to strip 24 tons of carbon per day. Two horizontal, rotating, regeneration kilns are used to reactivate approximately 60% of the stripped carbon before it is returned to the mills or leach facilities. One kiln is located in the Zadra plant, while the other is located in the AARL plant.
