Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

The securing of a reliable water supply for a prospective mine in the North West Queensland Mineral Province is usually one of the most influential factors in determining the mine's feasibility. The Ernest Henry Mine required a reliable water supply to serve a demand estimated at feasibility stage to be up to 20 ML/day. Numerous options were considered before a decision was made to construct a 113 km long pipeline from Lake Julius as this was the most cost effective, reliable source of supply. The North West Queensland Water Pipeline is a multi-user, Queensland government funded project initially supplying up to 7000 ML/year of water from Lake Julius to Ernest Henry Mine, with provision made for expansion to serve future users in the region. This paper discusses the history of the pipelineÆs development, together with a summary of the scheme's design features. Environmental and licensing requirements, construction and operational issues are also discussed.

Low-grade, porphyry copper type mineralization at the Moonmera prospect is related to the intrusion of a granodiorite porphyry mass into the Upper Permian "Gracemere granodiorite". Significant copper mineraliza- tion appears to be associated with the alteration assemblage quartz-sericite- kaolinite. The ore shell is surrounded by a zone where montmorillonite and kaolinite are in greater abundance and this assemblage is over- lapped, mainly at depth, by potassium feldspar alteration. Secondary biotite is abundant throughout the mineralized zone. Preliminary sulphur isotope results on the sulphide mineralization are compatible with a magmatic origin for the sulphur.

Atmospheric air on a moisture free volume basis consists of approximately 21 per cent oxygen. The current minimum threshold for oxygen in Australia is 19.5 per cent. Atmospheric air generally will also contain water vapour and will also pick up further moisture as it flows around a mine ventilation network. This paper details the results of a study to determine how much oxygen depletion can occur due to the sole impact of increasing the moisture content of air and the potential impacts of this on ventilation system design. The study shows that the moisture content can have a significant impact on the oxygen concentration in mine air. The main factors controlling the impact are the barometric pressure, dry bulb temperature and relative humidity of the air.CITATION:Tuck, M A, 2015. Before exploration programmes or minerals developments are formulated, a mining company ought to assess how capital can be returned if the project is successful. A fact not well appreciated by the minerals community is that it is often difficult to get money out of many Pacific Rim countries due to special foreign exchange controls or restrictions on dividend or capital repatriation. On top of this risk are factors such as creeping expropriation through administrative, fiscal, or corruption pressures; environmental regulations; terrorists; and organised labour and political activists. Political risk is much more than just expropriation or nationalisation.Political risk factors can make or break a project in many PacRim countries and just the cost of delays and negotiations can insidiously affect project economics. This unpalatable thought, however, can be readily addressed by either legal structuring e.g. offshore proceeds accounts, offset/back-to-back currency hedges, or political risk insurance for the equity as well as any subsequent project development debt.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

Coal is of tremendous importance for the Czechoslovak econ- omy. The current annual primary energy demand being about 109 million tons of standard fuel (1 ton of standard fuel - 7,000 coal = 29,308 GJ), coal satisfies almost two thirds of our fuel consumption. If compared with the distribution of resources in the world's fuel and energy pattern, the situation in Czechos- lovakia is significantly different, as shown in Fig. I. One of the causes behind the difference is that the Czechoslo- vak oil and natural gas reserves and, hence, their production are insignificant, so that it is necessary to import them. Brown coal will continue to play an important role as a prin- cipal domestic source of primary energy even in the future. While the share of nuclear power is increasing, brown coal represents strategic reserves in the fuel and energy balance.

Mine closure is a legitimate element of the mining cycle and like mine development involves technical planning, permitting, and finally construction. Closure begins with the mine's operational footprint and transforms the site so that it meets the explicit requirements of the owners and regulators. Implicitly, the closure will increasingly need to meet the requirements of other interested parties such as the local community, workforce, and future land users. Golden Cross is the first modern mine closure in New Zealand. It operated for 6 + years as a mid-size gold and silver mine winning ore from both underground and open pit sources, and processing via a carbon in leach circuit including a cyanide recovery stage prior to tailings disposal. The mine is situated in a sensitive high rainfall environment, and is complicated by the existence of a large ancient landslide underlying most of the tailings dam and waste rock embankment. The regulatory process for mine closure in New Zealand is not clearly understood by operators or regulators alike. The Golden Cross mine was permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and closed primarily under the Resource Management Act. This switch of legislation, the parallel reorganisation of many government departments, and change in societal expectations with respect to long term environmental stewardship during the life of the mine resulted in the requirements of closure being significantly different to the expectations at permitting.

Gold deposits in the Chirano district in south-west Ghana are hosted in a variety of structural settings along the Chirano shear zone (CSZ), in Paleoproterozoic rocks of the Sefwi-Bibiani belt. Most gold mineralisation occurs in strongly sheared and hydrothermally altered Birimian mafic igneous rocks and tonalite intrusions within the CSZ. A recent program of open pit structural mapping, core logging, and three-dimensional modelling helped to define deposit-scale structural controls on gold mineralisation. These include strain domains, shear zone flexures, shear zone intersections and vein arrays associated with host-rock competency contrasts. Interestingly, the plunge of higher-grade shoots in some deposits appears to be associated with the intersection of the CSZ and broadly folded Tarkwaian sedimentary rocks, which are not significant gold hosts in the Chirano district. This paper presents the results of 3D modelling that were used to define structural controls on mineralisation in several open pits and one underground mine along a 9 km length of the CSZ. LeapfrogÖ software was particularly useful because it highlighted the orientations of structural features that focused hydrothermal fluid flow during alteration and mineralisation. The improved understanding of structural controls provided two main benefits: near-mine exploration drill targets and better definition of structural domains for resource estimation.

Shear-flocculation is one of a munber of potential processes for upgrading deposits of finely-grained minerals and, more generally, for separating different types of particles suspended in a fluid.The smaller the particle the more likely it is to follow the fluid streamlines, or be entrained within turbulent eddies, and the less likely it is to deviate from the streamline and attach to bubbles (froth flotation), other particles (selective flocculation) or magnetic poles (wet magnetic separation). As shown in Figure I, a number of ingenious ideas have been proposed to overcome this effect. The suspended particles are assumed to be 1 - 10 µm.Thus, the efficiency of attaching ultrafme particles of the valuable component (solid circles) to air bubbles, as in process A, is poor. The efficiency may be improved by attaching the particles to oil droplets (Ralston, Kart and Newcombe, 1984) to form agglomerates that rise or sink (B), to magnetic particles (C) (Parsonage, 1988) to allow recovery in a magnetic separator (D), to other particles to form aggregates (E) that are then either attached to bubbles (F) or recovered by sedimentation (G) (Warren, 1992), and to pieces of polyethylene (Rubio and Baltar, 1991) that rise or sink (H).In A, C, E, F and H, the forces that are generally used to ensure collisions result in adhesion are hydrophobic forces, hydrodynamic forces and inertial forces (Warren, 1992). These drag particles from the streamlines to allow particle-particle adhesion. In B and E, soluble polymeric molecules have been added to bridge between particles as they approach closely during a collision.The second major consideration is selectivity. Selective adsorption of the hydrophobe or polymer onto the valuable particles is the key. Many subtle effects of surface chemistry are involved in obtaining adequate selectivity. A complication in real systems is that the initial suspension is often naturally coagulated and needs to be dispersed before being selectively flocculated.

The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. The heavy media cyclones at Argyle Diamonds are subjected to extremely abrasive service conditions and have been the subject of a development program from the time the first ore was treated in the AKl processing plant. In the past ten years the cyclones have been re-engineered from a standard DSM design, in which some components would only last four days, to the current Argyle design in which the minimum component life is 175 days. Development has focused upon the elimination of turbulence in the cyclone and combating unavoidable abrasion through the use of appropriate wear materials.

The use of Decision Analysis is becoming more widespread in industry as a whole, and there is considerable scope for its application in the mining industry. Wherever decisions have to be made, whenever risks have to be taken, whenever uncertainty exists or whenever judgements have to be made, then Decision Analysis can be used. In the mining industry we daily make many decisions involving risk, uncertainty and judgement. Expansion and diversity will only increase the need for balanced decision making techniques. This paper seeks to describe the history and principles of Decision Theory, and to illustrate the various modelling approaches using three fictitious yet realistic case studies. Decision Analysis logically integrates the quantifiable and seemingly non-quantifiable aspects of a decision problem into a coherent, explicit and rational solution. It also allows the decision-makers to see the full impact of each variable or uncertainty, and hence focus on the key aspects that influence the solution.

MOUNT STEWART is situated half a mile south of Leadville railway station, which is distant 240 miles by rail from Sydney via Mudgee. It forms a low ridge from which rock waste and alluvium slope gradually to the black-soil flats of the Coolaburragundy River. The Mt. Stewart mine comprises:(a) The Mt. Stewart workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(b) The Grosvenor workings in M.Ls. 44 and 45, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(c) The Extended workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.The workings contain 1375 ft.. of vertical shafts, 1105 ft. of underlay shafts, 800 ft. of rises and winzes, 8520 ft. of drives and crosscuts, and 18,000 ft. of stapes.The mine was first opened in 1888 as a silver-lead mine, and a waterjacketed furnace was erected during 18B2. The furnace was installed with two internally-fired tubular boilers of 35 h.p. and 25 h.p. respectively, and two Baker's rotary pressure blowers. The results of the smelting campaign indicate that, during 14 months, a total of 15,000 tons of ore were treated, yielding silver and lead. The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. Nickel WestÆs Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter operates three Peirce-Smith converters, each processing 110 tonnes of matte per charge. The vessels are lined with chrome-magnesia refractory with a mouth traditionally constructed from steel liner plates, protected with cast refractory. Mouth refractory is damaged by molten material and the action of cleaning solid buildup off the mouth. Once damage has accumulated, the mouth must be frequently maintained with hot refractory gunning or a mouth leak may occur. Such a leak requires a 32 hour repair period. A converter mouth redesign program was undertaken with the aim of reducing the rate of mouth damage during operation, eliminating mouth leaks and shortening mouth replacement times during vessel rebuild periods. An overview of the redesign process and operational performance is contained herein.

Over the decades, Redpath has undertaken a multitude of tunnelling and underground excavation projects for civil and mining clients both domestically and internationally. These projects have been undertaken through varying strata conditions with differing excavation methods in remote locations and in central business districts.With the recent turbulent nature of the global financial environment, project drivers have been challenged with the emphasis being placed on methods to gain early access to orebodies, rapid development techniques, lower capital costs and reduced labour requirements to name a few.A number of mining companies seeking to achieve these objectives have commenced the journey to better understand the operational constraints, challenges and opportunities that may be available with the use of alternative excavation methods.The development of safe and effective alternative excavation methods that comply with both domestic and international mining legislation and regulatory requirements is a challenge the industry needs to embrace. Given the current cost pressures being faced by the Australian mining industry, some alternative excavation methods offer the potential for longer term sustainability and rapid development of resources.More recently work has been undertaken on a project that challenged the norm and implemented an alternative excavation method with the use of an excavator with a rotating drum cutter head.This paper will review this recent project and provide technical and operational insight into some of the challenges faced in implementing an alternative excavation method in the metalliferous industry.CITATION:Donnelly, C, Ramage, G and Burke, R, 2014.
