A systematic study was carried out to investigate the reduction reaction mechanism of oxygen on pyrite surface using electrochemical techniques. The polarization curves showed two distinct regions, the Tafel region for superoxide formation and limiting current region for diffusion of dissolved oxygen to form hydrogen peroxide. These results were confirmed with a-c impedance measurements.

This paper presents a strategy for addressing the hazards of construction of tunnels in ground containing methane. A discussion of the nature of methane includes occurrence underground, and manner of entry into excavations. Means of methane control for underground operations are discussed, including ventilation, monitoring, equipment selection, and personnel training. Principles of ventilation for gas dispersion and removal are addressed. The use of continuous gas monitors, automatic power shutdown systems, and hand-held detectors is discussed. The paper addresses integration of permissible equipment to provide a safe system. Aspects of personnel training are discussed, including maintaining hazard awareness, and evacuation and re-entry procedures.

A study was conducted to compare physical and numerical models of the block-caving mining method. Results from the numerical analysis closely simulated the blocky behavior of the physical model, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The draw-down patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. An unexpected result from the numerical modeling was the development of a zone of downward deflection which preceded the development of the zone of material movement.

Examining a typical curriculum for mineral process engineers shows that traditional subjects remain important, namely, engineering, earth and basic sciences, mathematics and mineral proc¬essing technology. However, Table I shows additional subjects that may be woven into a modern curriculum, because of micro- and macro-engineering advances over the years. The ways to incorporate these subjects into the curriculum will vary from school to school. Such changes are in response to evolutionary technological and political needs as determined by society and business. A critical aspect of the planning, investigation, design, and construction of an underground excavation project is the portal. The portal is the primary access through which most if not all tunnel construction is carried out and it is the lifeline of the tunnel. Planning considerations include depth of cover, slope stability, economics of open cut versus shaft access, environmental impact, and contractor staging area. In conjunction with its 1993 Annual Meeting, held Feb. 15-18 in Reno, NV, SME sponsored a symposium, "Conveyor Belt Engineering for the Coal and Mineral Mining Industries." Eighteen papers were presented, grouped into four sessions: Low Tension Drives, High Tension Drives. Novel Techniques and Specifications. Three of the papers have been republished in this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Brief summaries of the other 15 papers are presented here. The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association (AMIRA) was established by the Australian mineral industry in 1959 to develop and manage collaboratively funded research projects. Owned and managed by industry, it coordinates research that answers questions defined by the sponsoring companies of the projects. Now over 35 years old, the Association is an excellent example of what can be achieved through collaborative research and an industry - backed research organisation.

In its 110-year history as a mining camp, the Boleo copper district of Baja California has weathered significant changes in its operation, ownership, and profitability, despite an inhospitable environment and unique ore body. For some 65 years, under the operation of Compagnie Boleo, the area ranked as the second largest copper producing district in Mexico, with over 560 km of underground workings. As its ore grade-and profitability-declined, operations continued sporadically and with varying degrees of success. Today, operations at Boleo are maintained -despite the economics -while work is underway to devise a viable metallurgical process. Lab tests on a hydrometallurgical method look encouraging and, though this may end the district's days as a mining camp, the feasibility of the process may result in an 18-kt/d full-scale operation.

With the rise in construction claims in public works contracting over the years, the use of Dispute Review Boards (DRB’s) in underground construction contracts has become quite common. However, in order for the DRB process to be an effective tool, there must be complete trust and confidence in the Board members and their adopted procedures by both the owner and contractor. This can be difficult in an industry where Board members and contractors may be well known to each other, while an owner maybe involved in a large complex underground project only occasionally. Using case histories, this paper will discuss some recent experiences with the DRB process from an owner’s perspective.

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's) are currently used extensively in the minerals industries; this paper looks beyond PLC's and that vintage of “computer control”--it looks toward what the authors see as new in the next five years. The paper seeks to present the application of ground control research at Mosaboni Copper Mines to increase the size of stoping areas. Room and Pillar stopes were experimented for increased production dispensing with the conventional breast stoping. The experimental stopes, with spans varying from 10 to 15 m, were extensively instrumented to study the behaviour of wall rocks (chlorite schist) and to determine the optimum span in the workings, dipping at 25° to 45° and 3 to 5 m in height. The observations confirmed that 15 m wide span could be safely worked with 3 m wide rib pillars at 600 to 800 m depth by using rock bolts. Ground conditions improved with the use of full-column cement grouted bolts dispensing with timber supports and the productivity was improved.

Groundwater remediation is growing in occurrence in the western United States. Groundwater remediation programs are regulated by state water quality statutes. The remedial action plans implemented under these statutes may conflict with well-established existing rights to withdraw groundwater for beneficial use. This paper discusses how the states of Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico administer conflicts between the need to withdraw and remediate groundwater with the existing rights of others to withdraw groundwater for beneficial purposes.

As with most industries, mining must now include in its plan of operation mechanisms to address a project's environmental impact. New regulations have focused attention on the potential environmental impacts of industry, particularly the handling of wastes. Modifications are currently being proposed to the Bevill Amendment. And development is ongoing of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D regulations specific to mining wastes. The result is a growing concern on the part of lenders, developers, buyers and owners regarding acquisition and ownership of mining properties. One of the most effective tools in managing the regulatory requirements is an environmental audit. An environmental audit can be a literature review to determine regulatory requirements. Drift excavation by boom-type roadheaders in the San Manuel and Kalamazoo sulfide copper ore bodies has been successfully demonstrated. Geomechanical rock classification in conjunction with detailed geologic mapping has been necessary to assess roadheader performance, and to predict advance rates in the varied rock classes in the San Manuel block caving mine. Rapid excavation and less fractured ground are obvious advantages of roadheader drift excavation over conventional drill and blast techniques. The geomechanical system of Engineers International (1984) can be an effective roadheader performance and ground support tool.

The use of personal computers (PCs) is increasing in underground construction applications, specifically, for estimating, record keeping, construction performance analysis, project cost reporting, and the effective application of construction experience for estimating and aggressive bidding. Applications particularly suited to the PC are analyses of construction performance and differing site condition claims. The advantages of using a PC in the analysis of differing site conditions claims is that the PC: requires quantitative and factual data, allows vast data manipulations, calculations, and sorting, and provides a simple graphic representation of complex data and issues. The restrictions imposed by a PC are conducive to the focus on essential facts, issues, quantitative analyses, and inherently, the truth. As computer thinking is established, a clearer, more precise and accurate focus on the elements of a differing site condition is essential for successful evaluation and presentation.

Fine crushing and rod grinding have been investigated using a laboratory-scale jaw crusher and a rod mill. The net energy consumption in both crushing and grinding was evaluated from torque measurements. An empirical relationship was established between energy consumption, particle size and operating parameters. When the mill feed size is reduced, through fine crushing, to about 80% passing 3 mm, the energy consumption will be minimized in a comminution chain of fine crushing and coarse rod grinding. The results in fine crushing were compared with a large-scale test.

Mining equipment, like all other equipment, is subject to failure. Since most failures occur at random and are unexpected, corrective maintenance is usually more expensive and causes more down-time than preventive maintenance. In order to reduce the number of failures and thereby increase the availability of an equipment or system, preventive maintenance can be scheduled at predetermined points of time. The preventive maintenance scheduling policies presented in this paper utilize reliability and probability theories. They can be applied to various production bottlenecks where high cost equipment precludes having sufficient quantities of stand-by units.

Smallbore tunnels in urban environments often present more technical and managerial problems than major large diameter schemes carried out for transportion, water supply and hydro-electric facilities. The 1.8 km Bath scheme was designed for construction in tunnel using the pipe jacking system. Unforeseen ground conditions meant other techniques were needed during construction. The paper describes the problems encountered and how they were overcome.
