The thermodynamic data necessary for the quantitative treatment of Metal-NH3- H2O systems at elevated temperatures are lacking in the literature. As a result discussions of the chemical basis of high temperature processes, such as leaching and hydrogen reduction, have tended to rely on low temperature thermodynamic data. In this paper a critical review is presented of the available high temperature data for metal ammine formation in aqueous systems, and methods are suggested to enable extrapolation of elevated temperature stability constants from low temperature thermodynamic data. Predictions of the Van't Hoff Lsobar, the simple cation Correspondence Principle (whereby metal ammine complexes are treated as simple cations) and Helgeson's Electrostatic-Nonelectrostatic Model are compared with the available high temperature stability constants for nickel ammines. Up to 80 °C all three estimation methods yield results which are in agreement with experimental data. However, serious deviations occur at higher temperatures; the various models overestimate the stability constants in the order Van't Hoff Isobar > electrostatic-nonelectrostatic model > simple cation Correspondence Principle. Using the experimental nickel data as a basis, a method is presented which permits reasonable estimates to be made of the stability constants of metal ammine complexes for temperatures above 80 °C.

The most common of the commercial product s are potassium chloride, potassium sulphate and potassium magnesium sulphate. The potassium content of potash is measured in units of K20 equivalent. The common grades of potassium chloride produced for agriculture average at least 60 0/0 K20 compared with approximately 50% Kp for potassium sulphate and 22% for potassium magnesium sulphate."

"The history of the development and application of controlled recirculation systems in U.K. collieries is traced and the theory behind such systems briefly examined. Specific applications for dealing with dust and dust/heat problems in headings, for which practical experience is currently available, are described. Consideration is given to the special features which these systems introduce in the underground situation and to the essential safeguards which are required for their safe use.IntroductionRecirculation of air is a commonly used technique in genera l ventilation and air conditioning practice, but has always been regarded with some suspicion for mining applications. This is perfectly understandable in view o f the hazardous conditions which can occur with dangerous forms of recirculation in mines. However, certain controlled recirculation techniques can offer advantages, particularly in the field s of dust and climate control in headings, provided that they are designed, Installed an d managed with full comprehension o f all aspects of the system and always bearing in mind that from the point of view of serious firedamp ignition risk, headings are potentially the most hazardous places in coal mines.BackgroundProbably the first recorded use of deliberate recirculation in British collieries was reported by Lawton in 1933. This researcher described trials, undertaken under the auspices of a national committee on ""The Control of Atmospheric Conditions in Hot and Deep Mines"", involving attempts to increase the velocity, and thereby the cooling power on hot faces, by means of simple recirculation systems using fans and ducts delivering recirculated air in the opposite direction to the normal face airflow. No significant cooling advantage was obtained and there is no subsequent record of this work being continued. During the discussion on this paper, there was considerable disbelief that fire damp percentages had not increased significantly when air was recirculated, but apparently no attempt was made to establish why this should be. It is of interest to note that J. Ivon Graham, one of the contributors, recommended that recirculation should be tried in stone headings for the control o f dust, as he believed that ""there may be scope for recirculation and filtration of the air under certain circumstances in such headings"". This idea was not developed for another forty years."

"Highly variable and higher than forecast lead miff feed grades were problems experienced at the Polaris Concentrator. Limited flotation capacity and poor operating flexibility prevented the plant operators from overcoming these difficulties, and resulted in grades and recoveries which were lower than necessary.Two column cells were integrated into the lead circuit in an effort to give the operators the tools they required to achieve the best grades and recoveries possible, regardless of the miff feed grade. Installation of the column cells increased lead concentrate grade from 76% to 79.3% Pb, and increased lead recovery from 9/% to 91.3% Pb.This paper reviews the design, development and operation of column flotation cells in the lead circuit at the Polaris Mine.IntroductionThe Polaris Concentrator was constructed in 1980 on a barge in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, and towed to its pre sent location on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, about 1450 km from the North Pole. The plant presently treat s about 2800 mtpd of new feed with average feed grades of 3010 Pb, 13% Zn and 5% Fe. Current production averages 36 000 tonnes of lead concentrate and 220 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate annually.The barge design and min e location dictated that the concentrator .be compact with very little unused floor space. As a result, flexibility was limited in terms of expanding the plant.Mill feed grades were highly variable and above forecast and the lead flotation circuit was found to be under capacity. This caused continued overloads in the lead cleaning circuit, resulting in low concentrate grades and recoveries. It was evident that an increase in lead flotation capacity and flexibility was necessary. The existing floor space did not allow for the installation of additional conventional flotation cells, but one alternative was the installation of column cells."

"A scientific testing program, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), was undertaken on the surface and underground facilities of Inca's Crean Hill Mine to investigate the effectiveness of using dry drilling with a dust control system.The surface test work consisted of the monitoring of advance rates and bit life white a series of 165 mm holes, wet and dry, were drilled at both mine air (0.69MPa) and high pressure air (1.72MPa). The results, based on statistical evaluations of field data, indicated that penetration rates can be increased by an average of 24% when drilling dry with high air pressure and by approximately 27.5% when drilling dry with mine air as compared with wet drilling under the same conditions. Dry drilling also has the effect of reducing button wear by approximately 69% using high pressure air. The underground test work employed a dust collection system developed for use with large diameter holes (165 mm) and high pressure drilling. The testing program has indicated that an average increase in penetration rate of 35% can be achieved when dry drilling in rock (waste) and of 49% when dry drilling in ore with high air pressure. Although preliminary dust monitoring did not indicate any appreciable increase in dust concentration during dry drilling, further dust monitoring is still required.A comparative cost analysis has indicated the potential for reduction in drilling costs when dry drilling is utilized. Further testwork is to be conducted to develop a reliable dust collection system for underground production."

"The paper takes its material from three peat mining and power project feasibility studies sponsored by CANMET and conducted by Montreal Engineering Company Ltd. in the years 1976 to 1980. The role which peat may play in the Canadian energy prospectus is outlined, estimated and measured fuel peat resources are tabulated, and the economic and technical feasibility of mining peat for power generation is reviewed Recommendations are made for future work, and construction and disbursement schedules are developed for a combined peat mining and power generation project. The relationship between the mining of moss and fuel peat is discussed.IntroductionWhereas moss peat has long been produced in Canada, and exported for horticultural use , the underlying fuel peat has received little attention until fairly recently.In the seventies, however, the deepening oil crisis spurred Canadian interest in Irish, Finnish and Russian experiences in the utilization of fuel peat. Among others, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada had long been alive to the possibilities which indigenous peat offers, and in 1976 the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET encouraged a proposal from Monenco to carry out a preliminary study and submit a report on the "" Assessment of Canadian Peat as an Alternative Fuel for Power Generation"". The report was submitted in April 1977. This was the first of a series of studies, and the authors of this paper were involved in its preparation.The escalating price of oil and the increasing problem of relying on its availability have combined to make alternative fuels more attractive. Peat, like other fuels previously uneconomic because oil was cheap, is now progressively gaining in viability. In addition to these factors, the utilization of peat has the following advantages: improvement in the country's balance of payments, by virtue of burning an indigenous fuel;creation of local employment for the mining of peat; improvement in land utilization;peat is a relatively clean-burning fuel, with low sulphur and ash contents."

"The relationship between froth bubble size as represented by intra-bubble impact distances (IID) and flotation performance is investigated. Experiments using an artificial ore comprising of limestone as the floatable component and silica as the gangue material were carried out in pseudo-steady-state circuit. A method to measure IIDs developed by Bhondayi and Moys (2014) was then used to measure froth bubble sizes as a function of froth height, superficial gas velocity and feed rate (pulp residence time). Samples for flotation performance evaluation were also taken. Results indicate that as froth height increases, the average IID values increase resulting in a decrease in limestone recovery while the grade increases. Increasing gas rate results in lower IID values that are accompanied by high recovery and low limestone grade. The effect of feed rate on both flotation performance and average IID values depended on froth depth and gas rate. Average IIDs largely remained the same at the two feed rates investigated.INTRODUCTIONIt is regarded as obvious that froth bubble size distribution (FBSD) will have an effect on plant grade and recovery. As the average FBSD decreases, the bubble surface area flux will increase making possible an increase in recovery and a decrease in grade. The opposite trend will be involved if average FBSD is increased. However: no method for measuring FBSD has been available, so these trends have not been studied in any detail. Bhondayi and Moys (2014) developed a novel technique to measure or estimate froth bubble sizes. Although they established a potential to use this method in understanding froth performance, no data have been presented to assess the correlation between the estimates of bubble sizes and actual flotation performance. In this work experiments are done to establish how the change in froth phase bubble sizes affect flotation performance. Flotation performance will be evaluated using recovery and grade. How water recovery to the concentrate changes with changes in bubble sizes will also be evaluated. It is known that water recovery is approximately inversely proportional to the square of the overflowing bubbles sizes. It will be interesting to establish how the rate of change of bubble sizes changes with water recovery."

"The non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry has been under extreme pressure since 1980 and significant changes are taking place, principally in the copper, nickel and lead industries. This paper reviews some of these changes, particularly with respect to smelter capacity, major technical trends, and the industry's response to increased energy costs and environmental constraints.The Canadian metal mineral production for 1985 has been estimated at a value of over $8 billion, of which half is derived from copper, nickel, lead and zinc production. It is in our national interest that the Canadian industry remain competitive in the world market and continue its traditional contribution to the Canadian economy. IntroductionPyrometallurgy by definition requires energy, usually in the form of fuel, and produces process gas streams which can no longer be discharged directly to atmosphere in most countries. While the industry has been under varying degrees of pressure over the past fifteen years, it is just since the early 1980s that major changes have taken place, due, to a large extent, to an oversupply on the primary metal markets and depressed prices. These factors, combined with a surge in the price of oil, have resulted in some trends developing which must be recognized by those in the industry who plan to be in operation and competitive in the next decade.Although the value of Canada's mineral production, in terms of constant dollars, has decreased by more than 35% over the period from 1980 to 1985, the bulk of this production is exported and the industry still makes a significant contribution to the Canadian economy."

"In order to define the ore/waste boundaries as finely as possible, mine planners often insist on kriging very small blocks (relative to the spacing of the available sample grades). These kriged estimates for very small blocks are over-smoothed. For several simple sampling patterns the relation between the block size and the variogram range, and the kriging results were studied. Meaningful estimates of individual blocks are obtained when the variogram range is large compared to the block size and the sample spacing. For a variogram range less than half the sample spacing, the kriged block estimates were found to be uncorrelated with the actual grades. The over-smoothed estimates should not be used for calculating recoverable reserves IntroductionNowadays most mining companies know that the geostatistical estimation method, kriging, gives the best estimates of individual block grades. As most mining engineers and geologists are now familiar with the basics of geostatistics, the definitions of the variogram and of kriging will not be repeated here. An appendix containing definitions and mathematical formulae is given at the end of the article for the sake of completeness.Even though it is well known that the kriged estimates for very small blocks are over-smoothed, mine planners who want to define the ore/waste limits as finely as possible (especially for selective underground mines), are often tempted to krige very small blocks. So we ask how small is ""too small""? Clearly ""smallness"" cannot be expressed in yards or metres. It depends on the nature of the orebody under study and this is reflected in the variogram model chosen to describe it.To answer this question, the changes in four key parameters are studied:• the kriging variance,• the variance of the estimated grade,• the slope of the linear regression of the true but unknown grade on its estimated value, and• the coefficient of correlation between the actual grade and the estimate;as a function of the block size and the variogram range. (Definitions of these four parameters are given in the appendix). Ideally the kriging variance should be low while the variance of the estimated grade should be equal to the dispersion variance of the blocks. The slope should be l.0, and so should the correlation coefficient.These four parameters have been calculated for several simple 2-D examples. The effect of using kriged block estimates that are too heavily smoothed are shown, and the dangers of trying to use these estimates for predicting recoverable reserves for small blocks (i.e. selective mining units) are pointed out."

"Abstract - Volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, an important base-metal deposit type in China, occur widely in submarine volcanic districts of variable magmatic affinities. These VMS deposits range in age from Archean to Mesozoic, but most are in Proterozoic and Paleozoic sequences. More than 60% of VMS deposits formed in the Paleozoic, the most important metallogenic eon. Three important Paleozoic VMS-metallogenic provinces include Northern Qilian, Sanjiang and Altai provinces. The Proterozoic constitutes the next important era, but with no VMS deposits in the middle Proterozoic. VMS deposits associated with the Proterozoic volcanic rocks occur around the Yangtze Platform and in the western Kunlun-Qinling. The Triassic is third in importance, with VMS deposits concentrated in the Sanjiang Tethys. The Archean has only one VMS deposit, on the northern margin of the Sino-Korea Platform.Five distinct compositional classes of Chinese VMS deposits have been distinguished: Cu, Cu- Zn (or Zn-Cu), Cu-Fe, Zn-Pb-Cu, and Pb-Zn (-Cu). The Cu, Cu-Co, and Cu-Zn types of deposits occur sporadically from the Archean to Paleozoic, and are closely associated with mafic and ultramafic volcanic sequences. The Zn-Pb-Cu and some Cu-Zn type deposits are restricted to the Paleozoic and Triassic, and are hosted by calc-alkaline felsic rocks in bimodal basalt-rhyolite sequences, whereas Cu-Fe and Pb-Zn type (except for the Laochang deposit) deposits are restricted to the Proterozoic and occur in calc-alkaline volcanic sequences. As large quantities of marine mafic volcanic rocks were deposited in western China, Cu and Cu-Zn deposits are major types of Chinese VMS deposits.Chinese VMS deposits formed in a wide range of paleo-tectonic settings and depositional environments, such as island-arcs, rifts, aulacogens, and ocean ridge hot spots. Among these, the rift and back-arc environments are the most important, containing about 60% of Chinese VMS deposits. Aulacogens are a subordinate environment where most of the Proterozoic VMS deposits formed. The oceanic ridge and hot-spot systems are common in the tectono-magmatic domains in China, but contain only a few small Cu and Cu-Zn type VMS deposits.The Chinese VMS deposits have usually been influenced by both deformation and metamorphism to various degrees, resulting in changes in the shape and metal distribution. Seven representative deposit styles have been recognized: sheets, sheet plus strata-bound stringer, cyclically zoned deposits, mounds, mound-like deposits, strata-bound stringer-disseminated, and stockwork-disseminated deposits. The formation of these various styles of deposits is controlled by several key factors, such as lithology and permeability of the host rocks, focused or unfocused discharge, temperature and chemical composition (e.g., salinity) of hydrothermal fluids, as well as depth of seawater."

Pour atteindre ses objectifs, le CRM met à la disposition de l'industrie un personnel spécialisé et compétent dont une quarantaine d'ingénieurs et de scientifiques. Etant donné la nature même de l'industrie minérale, ce personnel est très versé dans l'étude des problèmes diversifiés des domaines de la technologie minière, du traitement des minerais, de la métallurgie extractive et de l'analyse minérale. Ce Centre de recherches met également à la disposition de l'industrie une usine-pilote permettant de reproduire les résultats du laboratoire au moyen d'un appareillage de type industriel, d'obtenir des échantillons en quantité suffisante pour une exploration du marché et de familiariser du personnel avec les opérations normales de l'industrie. Certaines de ses contributions récentes au développement de l'industrie minérale du Québec seront présentées.

"The main solution, ore and residue pulp streams in the Rio Algom Quirke I uranium mill at Elliot Lake have been sampled and analyzed for radium-226. Analysis of the ore and leached residues indicates that Ra-226 dissolves and precipitates within the first pachuca tank. A maximum of approximately 0.2% of the Ra-226 in the ore remains in solution during leaching.IntroductionConcern over the acid drainage and radionuclide dissolution problems associated with uranium tailings disposal sites in Canada has prompted investigation into methods for improving current uranium processing practice.Present commercial practice usually involves leaching of the uranium ore with sulphuric acid, ion-exchange separation of the uranyl sulphate complex from the leach liquor and"" precipitation of the uranium as yellowcake. Daughter products of U-238, such as Th-230, Pb-21O and Ra-226 remain with the tailings and undergo long-term dissolution.Table I summarizes the probable behaviour of the radionuclides during milling. The concern here is with Ra-226, because it will deposit in the bones if ingested and is ""thus considered a serious health hazard(1), Similarly, Po-218 and Bi-214, which are daughter products of Rn-222, can be retained in the lungs and are considered to be the principal sources of radiation dosage(2) arising from the inhalation of Rn-222. Previous investigations(3-9l indicate or imply that Ra-226 undergoes redistribution during milling. However, detailed published information on the behaviour of Ra-226 in the uranium milling process appears to be lacking. A knowledge of the behaviour of Ra-226 in uranium mills, particularly during leaching, could lead to improved methods for its control.This paper reports the occurrence of Ra-226 in the Rio Algom mill. The main objectives of the study were to determine (1) the distribution of Ra-226 within the solids, (2) at what point, and how rapidly, redistribution occurs and (3) whether there are high concentrations of Ra-226 in solution."

This paper investigated the loss of cyanide via oxidation in CIP or CIL processes by relating the cyanide oxidation to its major oxidation product, cyanate. The results showed that the oxidation of both free cyanide and copper cyanide complexes are substantially enhanced by the presence of carbon. The rate of cyanide oxidation was found to occur in the order: Cu(CN)32- > CN- > Cu(CN)2-. The cyanide oxidation rate in the presence of copper and carbon increased significantly with increasing dissolved oxygen concentration, typical of CIL vs. CIP conditions. Cyanide oxidation rate of iron, zinc or nickel cyanide complexes was minimal.

"When two discontinuities form a tetrahedral wedge in a rock slope, a factor of safety for the wedge can be simply calculated (if motion is driven only by gravity and resisted only by friction) from plots of the normals to discontinuities on an overlay of a polar, equal-area spherical projection to which the great circles of a similar equatorial projection have been added.IntroductionThe stability of slopes in rock masses is often controlled by the discontinuities that exist in the masses. In particular, the geometry of the discontinuities constrains the ways in which the mass may fail. Displaying the orientation of the discontinuities on a spherical projection has been found to be a useful way of identifying possible failure modes. The most concise display shows the orientation of the normals (or poles) to the discontinuities that compose the fabric of the rock mass. Computer processing of large samples of discontinuity orientations is necessary if the sampling biases identified by Terzaghi (1965) are to be routinely corrected. Fortunately, displays of the poles to discontinuities (or pi diagrams) are relatively easily produced on the line printer of a computer or by a computer plotter (Cruden , 1978; Ramsden and Cruden, 1979). Unfortunately, further analysis of the stability of a rock mass has tended to use traces of typical discontinuities on a spherical projection rather than pi diagrams; examples may be seen in Hoek and Bray's book (1981)."

Abstract - The Lupin mine, located in the central Slave province just east of the western boundary of Nunavut Territory, is a world-class example of a Neoarchean-aged banded iron formation (BIF)-hosted lode-gold deposit. At the minesite the gold-mineralized Lupin BIF, separating stratigraphically underlying psammitic wacke and overlying argillaceous turbidite sequences, delineates the Lupin dome, a hammerhead-shaped F2/F3 interference fold structure occurring at the greenschist to amphibolite facies metamorphic transition within the thermal aureole of the Contwoyto batholith. Detailed paragenetic relationships indicate that peak thermal metamorphism coincided with the switch from regional D2 compression to rapid D3 unroofing of the Neoarchean orogenic infrastructure. Gold initially precipitated with pyrrhotite, replacing amphibolitic BIF at the apex of the Lupin deformation zone, separating the east and west lobes of the Contwoyto batholith. Over the course of associated prograde/retrograde metasomatic overprints, gold was further remobilized during garnet and loellingite/arsenopyrite growth in chlorite-altered selvages of late-forming ladder quartz veins. A metamorphic model of ore genesis, with gold being scavenged and transported by metamorphic fluid that was shed and structurally trapped at the amphibolite recrystallization front, is favored over the previously proposed syngenetic and exogenic models of gold concentration that have tended to polarize genetic interpretations to date.

The process modules available are:• crushing by jaw and cone crushers;• pre-concentration by the Dyna Whirl Pool dense media system;• grinding by wet rod or ball mills;• separation by gravity, magnetic, flotation or leaching-CVP adsorption methods;• dewatering by lamella or conventional thickeners and vacuum filters.To form complete plants, auxiliary equipment is also available, such as:• bins, feeders and conveying systems;• power generator units;• water tank and pump for process water;• interconnecting piping and cables;• erection and service tool kits;• set of spare and wear parts.For mine sites with rainy or winter conditions, a plastic tent with air heater can be supplied to cover the ore dressing equipment. Each module is workshop assembled complete with slurry pumps, internal pipe work, electric wiring with plug-in connections, hoses, etc., all arranged for quick and simple connection between the units. Before delivery, each unit is tested in the workshop."

"This paper describes a methodical approach to the estimation of the orientation and the magnitude of in-situ stresses. The study was performed at the Ruttan Mine, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. , a 6,000 T.P.D. underground operation, located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It involves an initial estimate to be made based upon: structural interpretation • virgin stress measurements conducted in other areas (world wide, regional)The verification of the prevailing stress regime was made by conducting CSIRO hollow inclusion(1) overcoring measurements. The current cost for a virgin stress determination is about $7000 per measurement(2) and the difficulty encountered in attaining a good reading is high. This paper will describe the analytical procedures employed at Ruttan in evaluating the in-situ stress magnitude and orientation based on three overcore tests. It is proposed to perform an additional six measurements in order to verify the following results:Vertical stress = av (MPa) = 0.027 by depth (m)Major principal stress = o! The Ruttan copper-zinc orebody is a multi-lensed, steeply dipping (70 degrees) en-echelon deposit. Individual lenses have a maximum strike length of 350 m with widths varying from 7 m to 61 m. "Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."

However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario' s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. The supply of vanadium is assured by diversified sources, distributed all over the globe. The inexhaustible raw materials base is complemented by a strong vanadium industry. Both the fully integrated vanadium producers and converters of vanadium oxide or vanadium-containing slags or residues guarantee an adequate supply, commensurate with the steady growing demand.The major share of the world's vanadium output is being consumed by the steel industry. As an additive to steel, the versatility of vanadium is particularly impressive. A few hundreds of one per cent of vanadium convert plain carbon steel into high-strength, low-alloy steel with more than double strength. On the other extreme, high-speed steels made via the powder metallurgy route show superior performance with vanadium additions as high as 6 or 8 percent.
