Concrete reinforcing requires coordination among many roles: structural engineer, estimator, detailer, fabricator, installer and others. The methods used to define and represent concrete reinforcement elements and assemblies in building information models is crucial in determining the efficiency of sharing data among BIM platforms and the effectiveness of using the carried data in production planning, fabrication and site work activities. Starting from the information items that are required to be provided by BIM platforms, as defined in earlier work, we have developed the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) bound Concepts and Model View Definitions (MVDs) for concrete reinforcement. Furthermore, in coordination with software developers, we propose guidelines for best practices for concrete reinforcement modeling. Implementing these guidelines by software providers will improve reinforcement modeling with regard to various aspects of reinforcement products like geometric representation, placement, and property specifications. The proposed approach is selected as a way to improve functionality of the shared data for production planning, fabrication, project management, and site activities. Guidelines for assigning information to rebar type and instance definitions as well as to rebar elements and assemblies are provided. An efficient method of sharing geometry and property sets among rebar instances of a rebar array is also defined.

Closure cost estimates may be generated at any stage of a mining operationÆs life; commencing with the initial prefeasibility studies and continuing through to the final decommissioning cost estimates. However, not all mine closure cost estimates are necessarily the same. Cost estimates will vary depending on the purpose for which they are prepared, the organisations requiring or undertaking the estimate and the stage of the mining operation. Different organisations can legitimately arrive at disparate cost estimates for closing the same mine because the organisations have different reasons for requiring the estimates. Another, equally valid, reason for potentially wide variations in cost estimates by different organisations on the same mine site is the different definitions of æclosure costsÆ used by different estimators. This paper considers the different approaches by different organisations including operating companies, government authorities and financial organisations and uses a hypothetical example based on practical experience to illustrate some of these differences in estimation methods.The paper suggest that a more consistent approach to closure cost estimating in the Australian mining industry would assist mining companies, governments, the accounting industry and the broader community to better understand this complex component of mine planning. Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

A siderurgia mundial vive um momento de excesso de oferta, com isso as empresas necessitam reduzir custos por meio da melhora de processos e/ou através da substituição por matérias primas alternativas às convencionalmente utilizadas. Este trabalho trata justamente deste tópico e busca substituir a fluorita por outra fonte de fluxante, neste caso, o óxido de boro. Neste trabalho o óxido de boro foi adicionado a escórias sintéticas num banho de aço à 1600°C. Foram realizados testes com proporções de 3%, 5% e 7% de óxido de boro na composição das escórias. A fusão foi realizada em atmosfera inerte de argônio em um forno de resistência de dissiliceto de molibdênio. Amostras de aço foram removidas periodicamente a cada 5 minutos até os 25 minutos de experimento. Estas amostras foram analisadas em um espectrômetro de infravermelho. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade técnica para a aplicação do óxido de boro como substituinte da fluorita.

Ventilation network modeling in mine planning dates back at least three decades, but it is not widely accepted and/or practiced until the last decade, thanks to the advent of modern computers with their increase d speed and storage space. There are at least half a dozen such modeling software packages available on the market each with different features and acceptance. This paper compares five popular software packages,?? VnetPC Pro, MineVent, VentSIM Visual, VentGraph and MFIRE 3.0. A case study using Missouri S&T?s Experimental Mine is conducted to compare the five software packages in features, interface, output display and user-friendliness.

Este trabalho avaliou a evolução estrutural e mecânica dos ciclos térmicos realizados em uma chapa laminada a frio de aço baixo carbono com micro adição de molibdênio e nióbio destinado para a indústria automobilística, associado a classe dos aços bifásicos. Para realização do estudo foi feita a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica, por intermédio de amostras retiradas após a laminadas a frio produzidas em escala industrial, com auxílio das técnicas de microscopia óptica, e avaliação da dureza via Nanoindentador Instrumentado. Os ciclos térmicos foram feitos com o intuito de observar os processos de recuperação, recristalização, e transformação de fases no aquecimento e após resfriamento, com encharque em distintas temperaturas do campo intercrítico, via análise de dilatometria em um equipamento de análise termomecânica (TMA) em amostras extraídas da chapa laminada a frio “Full- Hard”.

Neste trabalho foram estudados os efeitos da laminação a frio com baixo percentual de redução e a cinética de recristalização em um aço médio carbono e alto manganês. O aço em estudo foi laminado a frio com percentual de redução de 10%, seguido de um tratamento térmico de recozimento nas temperaturas de 650 e 700°C, em tempos de 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30 minutos. A caracterização microestrutural e avaliação da fração recristalizada foram avaliadas por microscopia óptica e a dureza Vickers (avaliada em um macrodurômetro e um microdurômetro). De acordo com os resultados pode-se observar um efeito combinado de recristalização e crescimento de grão em função da microestrutura parcialmente encruada pelo baixo percentual de redução imposto, que se acentua com aumento do tempo e da temperatura de encharque.

A indústria siderúrgica demanda um acabamento superficial de excelente qualidade em placas (slabs), antes de seu processamento em laminadores. O limite da temperatura de fresagem de 300°C exigia um esfriamento com posterior reaquecimento, gerando elevadas perdas energéticas. A empresa austríaca Maschinenfabrik Liezen com ampla experiência na fabricação de fresadoras de grande porte até 300°C desenvolveu e fabricou uma revolucionaria fresadora de alta capacidade (600.000 ton/ano), para operar de forma contínua em 800°C; nesse desenvolvimento de hardware e software foram também incorporadas várias otimizações operacionais e ambientais, sendo o destaque a fresagem modulada/inteligente, com precedente relevamento topográfico e termográfico para a localização dos defeitos superficiais, para a posterior fresagem com profundidade variável para a minimização de material retirado e simultânea eliminação dos defeitos localizados.

"Diesel particulate Matter (DPM) is a byproduct of fuel combustion in diesel engines. It is classified as a carcinogen, with associated respiratory and cardiovascular health effects. The composition, size, and concentration of DPM is dependent on factors such as engine type, loading and fuel composition. Though a number of DPM abatement and control strategies currently exist, particularly in underground mining environments, occupational exposures remain a serious health concern. As a novel abatement approach, DPM scavenging by fine water or “fog” droplets has been proposed and a laboratory set-up has been built to test the efficacy on engine exhaust. Here, we describe a series of tests that varied engine load, system flow rate and fog drop number density. While none of these factors had overwhelming effects on the results within the ranges tested, the improvement in DPM mass removal attributed to the fog treatment was about 45% on average in comparison to no treatment. INTRODUCTION Diesel engines have seen widespread use for well over a century due to their relatively high thermal efficiency and fuel economy1. More recently, however, adverse health risks of diesel exhaust have become increasingly clear. Many of these risks are associated with the physical and chemical properties of exhaust components1–3. The term diesel particulate matter (DPM) is used to refer to the solid components of diesel exhaust, which are a mixture of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC) and minor constituents including sulfates and metal ash3. The OC fraction of DPM results from unburned fuel and lube oil, whereas EC or soot is formed during the combustion of locally rich regions within the fuel. DPM is classified as a carcinogen6,7 and epidemiological studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between long-term exposure to DPM and other combustion-related fine particulate and increased cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases8,9. Diesel engines operate in relative fuel rich/oxygen lean conditions and are characterized by relatively high emissions of particulate as compared to spark-ignition engines2,3,10. Typically, these emissions range from 107 – 109 particles/cc and cover two primary size ranges: the nuclei mode where particles have diameters less than about <50 nm, and the accumulation mode where diameters are from about 50-10,000 nm. Most OC resides in the nuclei mode as semi-volatile compounds, while most EC is in the accumulation mode3. The physical and chemical properties of DPM vary with the type of engine, fuel (e.g., petro- vs. bio-diesel) and operating conditions such as loading (i.e., a function of torque and rotational speed)2,3,9,11,12. Loading is a particularly important factor with respect to DPM toxicity9,13,14, and on the effectiveness of after-treatment technologies2,3,15. Engine load alone can affect the EC/OC ratio, and the size distribution and number density of DPM. For diesel engines, the load is roughly proportional to the equivalence ratio3, defined as the actual fuel/air ratio over the stoichiometric fuel/air ratio for complete combustion. Light loads generally favor the formation of OC and small particles. As load is increased the volatiles are oxidized leading to larger soot particles (i.e., EC), but lower total number density of DPM. With further loading, the formation of soot offsets the decrease in volatiles, resulting in increased DPM mean size and number density3."

O uso de tratamentos de superfície proporciona melhoria das propriedades tribológicas dos materiais, possibilitando a utilização de materiais comuns, de menor custo e com alta tenacidade, porem menos duros, em condições que exigem alto desempenho da região de superfície. Os tratamentos termoquímicos podem aumentar o desempenho da superfície de forma mais simples e com menor custo quando comparado a processos de deposição de filmes finos. Neste trabalho foram realizados tratamentos termoquímicos de boretação, nitretação sólida e boretação multicomponente em aço AISI 1045 com o objetivo de melhorar o comportamento tribológico. O tratamento de boretação multicomponente consistiu de boretação seguido de nitretação, ambos realizados por via sólida. Foram realizados ensaios de desgaste por deslizamento do tipo pino-sobre-disco com contra corpo de WCCo. Os resultados mostraram o melhor desempenho das amostras apenas boretadas.

Neste trabalho, apresentaremos as diretrizes, tecnologias e processos desenvolvidos na Usiminas, consolidados em uma arquitetura. Esta arquitetura propiciou, entre outros, a estabilidade e continuidade dos sistemas existentes, a padronização da experiência final do usuário, a agilidade na construção das soluções Java, evoluindo a qualidade dos sistemas mantidos pela TI, com resultados efetivos.

O aumento contínuo da produção de aço nas últimas décadas, fez com que usinas siderúrgicas se adaptassem a novas demandas a fabricação de aço. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os reatores que variam de 6-350 toneladas de aço vazado correlacionado seus parâmetros dimensionais e com a ajuda de uma ferramenta de extrapolação de dados, propor dimensionalmente um convertedor de 800 toneladas. Finalizando, verificando a correlação entre os aspectos importantes como: altura do nível do banho estático, relação de esbeltez e relação carga / volume. Os resultados mostram a grande variação dimensional entre os reatores. Em alguns casos, mesmo com capacidades semelhantes, os reatores são diferentes devido fabricantes diferentes. Em casos específicos, os reatores têm uma tendência para obter idealidade (volume específico igual a 1) ou superar com ele o nível adimensional tende a diminuir.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. This paper discusses the study, design and implementation of the new gas handling system for the Caletones Smelter of Cbdelco..Chile. A discussion on design conditions for a Mure Sulphuric Acid Plant using Teniente Converter.gases.is also included. The old system which started to be modified in 1985 and relied on natural draft and used balloon flues, resulted in a limited .gas handling capacity for operation under Mure process conditions. This system also caused excessive fugitive gases in the smelter working areas. The new system permits handling of process gases from the higher capacity Teniente converters installed in 1987-1989 Improving the gas handling of the reverberatory furnaces and Peirce-Smith converters as well as the environmental conditions of the smelter. This system utilises improved converter gas hoods, evaporative cooling and electrostatic precipitators gas cleaning, and is based on natural draft.

This paper provides an update to a paper by the author on an overseas explorer&apos;s perception of New Zealand, presented at the 1997 New Zealand Minerals &amp; Mining Conference. New Zealand has one of the most open and internationally competitive economies in the world. The petroleum exploration industry in New Zealand is booming with a record number of wells planned for 2000. New Zealand is keen to encourage investment in mineral exploration to develop its natural resources. A study of the geological potential of New Zealand estimated the value of known and potential resources of metals at $86 billion. Gold has the greatest potential, with a total resource estimated at $33.5 billion. The price of gold has averaged NZ$554 since the beginning of 1998, and NZ$593 in the last year, which is very competitive with other countries. An assessment of country risk compared New Zealand with twenty other countries in ten risk categories: sovereign risk, land access, environmental issues, land claims, mining legislation, social risk, infrastructure, civil unrest, natural disasters and workforce. New Zealand ranked fifth, showing it has low country risk. This provides a high degree of certainty for investment, which is important for the perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination. Corruption was considered separately, and New Zealand ranked third out of ninety countries, showing it is one of the least corrupt countries in the world. New Zealand has a favourable business environment, good geological potential, low country risk and no corruption. Despite this, New Zealand has not registered on the radar screens of overseas mineral explorers, and the positive factors appear to have been overlooked. New Zealand has considerable undeveloped mineral potential, and with the current rise in commodity prices, it is hoped New Zealand can participate in a resurgence in mineral exploration.

In this work, we studied the recovery of copper from AMD by cementation with iron powder. To control the size of copper particles within the nanoscale range, we tested the use of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). We tested three concentration levels (0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 M) and temperatures (25, 50 and 75 °C). The activation energy of cementation was also assessed by fitting the experimental data with the Arrhenius equation. Under all investigated conditions, the cementation reaction was found to be a diffusion-controlled process. Without surfactant, the activation energy was 19.9 kJ/mol. In the presence of SDS the activation energy increased up to about 35 kJ/mol. With or without SDS, the particle size of the copper product was strongly affected by the cementation temperature. Without SDS, the cemented product aggregated into micro-sized clusters of about 15 μm at 25 °C, 2–3 μm at 50 °C and 1 μm at 75 °C. The addition of SDS resulted in a dramatic decrease of copper particle size up down to the nanoscale range. Under the best operating conditions, the particle size of copper was <100 nm.

Purification of copper electrolyte at Naoshima is carried out by two stage liberation to completely depress copper and impurity ions followed by concentration of the solution to produce crude nikel sulfate as by-product. A new nickel recovering process has been developed and pilot tested recently. It consists of the following process steps.; neutralization of spent electrolyte from liberation section to remove free acid and most part of remaining impurity ions, refining and nickel concentration by solvent extraction, and crystallization of pure nickel sulfate from concentrated strip solution. This paper describes the results of laboratory and pilot plant tests, then briefly discusses feasibility of the proposed process.

Para produção de aço em uma usina integrada o gusa líquido é parte predominante na composição da carga metálica, porém, levando em consideração a sua composição típica e para otimização do processo é necessário que haja um tratamento precedente ao carregamento do convertedor. Teores elevados de silício carregados em convertedores para produção de aço carbono e elétricos provocam um maior consumo de fundentes para neutralizar a sílica gerada durante o processo e maior instabilidade, por outro lado teores muito baixo não fornecem um balanço térmico favorável para utilização de sucata. Diante disso é necessário trabalhar com uma faixa de silício que atenda o mínimo necessário para que se tenha um balanço térmico favorável. Este projeto teve por objetivo modelar a dessiliciação através da adição de um agente dessiliciante e sopro de oxigênio na panela, trabalhando com um teor de silício final entre 0,20% a 0,50 %. A dessiliciação do gusa é realizada em 2 etapas, sendo a primeira quando o gusa é transferido do carro torpedo para a panela e a segunda etapa com sopro de oxigênio. O projeto conseguiu reduzir em 44% a quantidade de corridas fora da especificação, reduzindo dessa forma o consumo de fundentes no convertedor.
