AT the meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, held in Denver last September, papers were read by F. H. Brownell, a vice-president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and chairman of its finance committee, and by H. Foster Bain, former director of the United States Bureau of Mines and now secretary of the A. I. M. E.. which dealt thoroughly with certain phases of my sub-ject. These addresses can hardly have failed to awaken serious reflection in all who listened to them; but their implications have apparently not penetrated the con-sciousness of bankers, economists and statesmen, whose business it is, or should be, to prepare for the economic and social changes which must inevitably follow, if the conclusions which I shall outline hereinafter are true. In discussing this subject I wish to disclaim any intention or desire to forecast the course of the metal markets or the immediate prospects of the mining in-dustry. The facts' adduced must inevitably influence the value of metals, the activity and profitableness of mining, and perhaps also the social status of those en-gaged in it. But my forecasts do not refer to this year, next, year, or the year after. The nearest ap-proach to a date on which I will venture is that the relative scarcity of gold may begin to make itself felt in something like ten years from now, but its effect will not culminate for several years thereafter. Scarcity of new gold is likely to be offset, to some extent, by increasing use of currencies based on credit; but unless it is found possible to dispense with the gold standard altogether, this can hardly prevent a great ultimate fall in commodity prices. This fall, moreover, is likely to be more severe in manufactured goods than in what are, popularly termed raw ma-terials; and most of all in those manufactured goods which are susceptible to the greatest degree to cheapen-ing by mass production, and which are least counter-affected by increasing metal prices; by which I mean those in which the cost of metal contained forms a relatively small, element in the total cost of production.

Two distinct types of depth-dependent variations in texture have been observed in niobium cold-rolled various amounts up to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness. These nonuniformities are thought to be the results of nonhomogeneous plastic dewmation during rolling. The first type is characterized by a zone at intermediate depths that tends to lack certain strong orientations which are present in the surface and center layers of the rolled stock. This type of texture modification seemed to be associuted with "high" body rolling and may be related to the shape of the zone of deformation in rolling. The second type of texture inhomogeneity found involved the formation of a unique texture in the surface layers of heavily rolled strip. High fiiction forces between work piece and rolls appear to be needed to generate and maintain this texture. We believe that this unique surface texture results from a shear mode of deformation in the surface layers. THE evolution of texture in both the surface and center regions of cold-rolled niobium as a function of increasing deformation from 43 to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness was reported in a previous paper.' It was noted that for strips rolled between 95 and 98 pct reduction a distinctly different texture appeared in the surface layers which was unlike the center texture. Certain other layer to layer textural variations were also detected during the experimental phase of that work but were not described in the paper. Surface textures have been reported previously for the bcc materials iron and Steel2-4 and are well known in the fcc metals.5 It is usually stated that these are shear textures which arise under conditions of high friction between specimen and rolls. Work by Mayer-Rosa and Haessner5 n niobium rolled under conditions presumed to be high roll friction gave no indication, however, of a surface texture in that material. This is indeed puzzling in view of our results.' Thus we undertook additional experiments designed to study the stability of the surface texture for certain rolling variables. The variables investigated were the presence or absence of lubrication, amount of reduction per pass, and reverse vs unidirectional rolling. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe the kinds of depth-dependent textural inhomogeneities that we have observed in rolled niobium as well as to present the results of our recent experiments on the stability of the surface texture. Possible explanations for the depth-dependent texture variations will be discussed in terms of nonhomogeneous plastic deformation during rolling. EXPERIMENTAL Specimens cut from the niobium rolled to different reductions in the previous study1 were examined at various layer levels throughout the strip thickness for textural inhomogeneity. The specimen surfaces were either etched or machine ground and etched to remove material to a specific depth. Textures were determined by means of the Schulz X-ray reflection pole figure method with a Siemens texture goniometer and Cum X radiation. Since the important intensity peaks of the textures in niobium are usually located on the normal direction (N.D.) to rolling direction (R.D.) radius of the (110) pole figures, it was sufficient in many cases to scan only along this radius. At selected depths or where additional information was required the entire (110) pole figure was also obtained. In studying the stability and formation of the surface texture, experiments were conducted on 0.400-in.-thick, fine-grained, randomly oriented niobium specimens extracted from the same starting stock as that used in the earlier study.' Two of these specimens were rolled at room temperature to a total reduction of 96.4 pct. One was rolled between cleaned and degreased rolls with no lubrication. The other was lubricated between passes with Welch Duo Seal vacuum pump oil. The rolling schedules of each were kept as nearly identical as possible. Drafts were of the order of 0.006 to 0.012 in. per pass. Other experiments consisted of rolling specimens at constant fractional reduction per pass, i.e., (ta- tb)/ta equals a constant where ta and tb are the entrance and exit thickness of the rolled stock, rather than at a constant draft, i.e., ta- tb equals a constant. Ten specimens were rolled at room temperature on a two-high, motor-driven rolling mill with 8-in.-diam rolls. These specimens were rolled to thicknesses of between 0.041 and 0.073 in. (82 to 90 pct total reduction) at approximately constant reductions per pass ranging from 9 to 45 pct. Kerosene was used as a lubricant. Half of the specimens were always rolled in the same direction while the other half were reversed end to end at each pass. The texture in the surface regions was determined with the X-ray technique described above. RESULTS The textural inhomogeneities noted in niobium rolled from fine-grained, randomly oriented stock 1.5 in. long by 0.75 in. wide by 0.40 in. thick can be classified into two types. The first may be discussed with the aid of Figs. 1 to 3. With the use of polymer solutions in secondary recovery operations, the need has developed to understand the mobility control mechanism. This study investigated mobility control by considering both permeability and rheological effects. Experiments used a high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide polymer. Flow studies took place in reservoir and Berea cores having zero oil saturation. Effective size of the polymer flow unit was inferred from Nuclepore filter tests. Clay studies indicated the particle size capable of decreasing the core permeability. Flushed permeabilities measured the approximate core permeabilities with flowing polymer solutions. These permeabilities were considerably lower than original values. With mobility data and the flushed permeability, maximum effective viscosities were determined for polymer solution flow in a core. Effective viscosities showed that rheological properties play an important part in mobility control with polymer solutions. The study showed that permeabilities decrease and stabilize with polymer flow. At the lower permeabilities, high shear rates exist in the cores. Because of the pseudoplastic character of the polymer solution, the high shear rates caused low effective viscosities. This condition pointed to the inefficient use of the potentially high viscosity of the polymer solution at low shear rates. INTRODUCTION In the oil industry, a great deal of interest is being shown in the use of polymer solutions for secondary recovery and a number of polymer floods are being performed in the United States.1 Some of these floods have become commercial while others have been reported as failures. A number of floods are still in progress and remain to be evaluated. With the advent of polymer flooding, the need developed to understand the mobility control mechanism in porous media. Rheologically, the polymer solutions behave as pseudoplastic fluids. Investigators have studied the rheology for this type of non-Newtonian fluid in porous media?-6 Results have also been reported on the ability of polymer solutions to decrease mobility.7-10 Some investigators indicated that polymer solutions show a different rheological behavior in cores than on the viscometer.7,8 This study is representative of an initiatory investigation on mobility control with polymer solutions. Some effects are considered on a qualitative basis. Mobility control is considered from the standpoint of both permeability and rheology and, to the extent possible, permeability and rheological effects are considered separately. Results show that mobility control occurs from a reduced permeability caused by polymer retention and an effective viscosity determined by the average shear rate in the core. In this respect, rheological behavior is as important in mobility control as permeability. PROCEDURES A high molecular weight, partially hydrolyzed, polyacrylamide polymer was used in the investigation. Solutions of various concentrations were made with this polymer in different types of water. Some solutions used distilled water and others used tap water. The tap water contained approximately 500 ppm dissolved solids. As used in this paper, concentrations in ppm refer to parts by weight solute to one million parts by weight of solvent. In the tap water, calcium and magnesium accounted for from 60 to 80 ppm of the solids, the remainder being mostly sodium chloride. All solutions contained a bactericide, and anti-oxidants and antiprecipitants were added to the tap water. Capillary and concentric-cylinder* viscometers determined the rheological properties of solutions. The capillary viscometer is described elsewhere.6 Berea and reservoir sandstone were used as core materials for this investigation. Cores were 1 in. in diameter by approximately 2 to 3 in. long. Prior to mounting, the Berea cores were heat-treated for 3 hours at 850F. This treatment decreased the water-sensitivity of the clays in the cores. The reservoir cores were cleaned with solvent and

This method permits local SatUrations to be measured in a core enclosed in a steel pressure vessel without interrupting the flow. calibration data and a saturation distribution measurement obtained with the apparatus are included by way of illustration. Introduction In laboratory flow experiments designed to study the mechanism of oil production it is frequently necessary to measure the oil saturation in a core or sand pack containing Oil, gas, and perhaps brine. It is sometimes desirable that the saturation measurement refer to a relatively small portion of the core, so as to eliminate end effects; that it be made without interrupting the flow, and that it be applicable to a core enclosed in a steel Pressure vessel capable Of withstanding the Pressures encountered in petroleum reservoirs. None of the usual methods of measuring saturation meets all Of these requirements. To measure the gas saturation by observing the apparent compressibility of the gaseous Phase1 would require the interruption of the flow and would give an average saturation for the whole core. An electrical conductivity method is available for measuring brine saturations,2,3 but it is not applicable to oil. A radioactive tracer might be used if a suitable substance could be found that would dissolve in the oil, emit gamma radiation, and not be adsorbed on the sand, the steel core holder, or in an aqueous- phase. The large gamma-ray background from the mass of radioactive oil in other parts of the apparatus might, however, be undesirable. There remain for the saturation measurement methods involving the absorption or scattering of some penetrating radiation produced outside the apparatus. It might be possible to use X-rays or gamma rays; but these radiations would be so much less strongly absorbed and scattered by the oil than by the steel walls of the core holder and by the sand that it seems doubtful that much precision could be attained. In a beam of neutrons, however, there is a radiation that is very penetrating and, moreover, its scattering by substances containing hydrogen, such as oil, is qualitatively different from that occasioned by other materials. It would seem possible, and has proved to be quite practicable, to measure oil saturations accurately under the required conditions by means of neutron scattering. The first, to our knowledge, to suggest neutron scattering as a means of measuring oil saturation were F. Brans and ,. A. Bottema,4 of the Amsterdam laboratories of the Bataafache Petroleum Maatschappij, who made a few preliminary experiments to test the method while they were engaged in exploring the possibilities of neutrons for well-logging purposes. J. W. Tomlison—It seems probable that the author's conclusion, that the conductivity of the slags decreases with increasing content of FeO, is erroneous due to the method of plotting the data. Thus, the results of other workers2,3,13,15 show that the conductivity of molten oxide slags increase with increasing temperature, indicating that the trend of the curve shown by the authors is due to the fact that the data for the slags containing relatively small amounts of FeO are at higher temperatures than those for the slags containing relatively large amounts of this oxide. In this connection the work of Wejnarth2 may be mentioned in which in an investigation of a series of iron silicate slags, the conductivity was found to increase with increasing content of FeO; the fact that the author's slags contained TiO2 probably does not affect the issue since it has been shown15,16 that, at least as far as conductivity is concerned, this oxide behaves essentially the same as silica and that mixtures of the oxide with silica have a very low conductivity of the order of 10-4 mhos at 1750°C. In connection with the experimental technique it may be noted that bubbles of carbon monoxide would probably be produced at the surface of the graphite electrodes in contact with the melts thus rendering the accuracy of the measurements somewhat open to question. J. L. Wyatt (author's reply)—Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to works by Martin and Derge, which indicate that slag systems containing no TiO2 are characterized by an increase in conductivity with an increase in temperature. Further, I have cited his examples, which indicate a drastic increase with small temperature change. The results of Dr. Derge's work have no bearing whatsoever on the results of this paper, since the slags under study here contained up to 70 pct TiO2 One cannot generalize on slag systems as a whole on the basis of any one family, for there are definite compounds of ionic nature formed in each system, and the ionic mobilization of these is something that cannot be determined without actual experimentation. Dr. Tomlinson makes reference to an unpublished work which, he claims, shows that titanium dioxide behaves the same as silica in regard to conductivity. Since I have not had 'an opportunity to see the paper I cannot make any comments, but unless the same slag system was studied there can be no specific comparison of results. If the decrease in conductivity of the slag was due entirely to temperature phenomena, as Dr. Tomlinson indicates, then one is without an explanation of the values shown in the paper for slags containing from 10 to 20 pct FeO. I cannot agree that the deviation in findings was appreciably related to temperature change; further, I believe this point was completely covered in the paper. The production of petroleum in Illinois in 1928 was approximately 6,500,000 bbl., a decline of about 500,000 bbl. from the previous year and of about 1,500,000 bbl. from 1924. Production increased about 200,000 bbl. in Indiana to slightly less than 1,000,000 bbl. Production for 1929 is estimated at approximately 6,000,000 bbl. for Illinois and 1,000,000 bbl. for Indiana. Illinois Because production from most of the wells in the state has declined to a small daily average and the low prices for crude oil discouraged wildcatting, the number of wells drilled fell below that for any previous year since the development of commercially important production in the state. The Ohio Oil Co. discovered a pool of apparent commercial importance in southwestern Illinois near Dupo, in St. Clair County, and favorable showings of oil were encountered in a well in southeastern Illinois, near Harrisburg in Saline County. New production from the Dupo area is expected to check the rate of decline for the state. In these days, when detailed investigations of stratigraphy, structure, and sand conditions so frequently result in the discovery of new oil fields, and applause from oil companies and the public, geologists do well to walk humbly, and punctiliously to admit that the geologic principles controlling the distribution of oil and gas have as yet been discovered only in part, and that what remains yet to be learned is probably vastly more than what is already known. The few experiments already attempted have been fragmentary, and somewhat desultory, and however positive each of us may be with respect to certain theoretical conclusions, many of the fundamental questions as to the origin and mode of occurrence of petroleum are subject to radical disagreement. Of the chemical changes attending the generation of petroleum from organic matter, little is actually known. Most of the postulated formulas are liable to be misleading, through ignorance of essential factors. Open-minded-ness is therefore a prime essential at the present stage of our science. Nevertheless, adopting the hypothesis that oil originates in some manner fundamentally connected with the organic theory, and in possible departure from such open-mindedness, the writer will pay no attention to the so-called inorganic theory, since every attempt to apply this theory to the study of old oil fields, or to the discovery of new ones, affords cumulative evidence of its inadequacy. In this paper, some of the factors affecting the occurrence of petroleum that the writer believes worthy of consideration by the prospector for oil in any new region will be discussed. Some of these, which arc less generaLly understood, will be considercd somewhat in detail. Other points, the significance of which cannot now be determined, require more field study, and for that reason are here brought to the attention of the field geologist. On the other hand, certain theoretical points which do not bear especially on the oil possibilities of a new region will be given little or no attention. The main topics that will be discussed are: (1) sufficiency of carbonaceous detritus and residues in the oil-forming rocks; (2) stage of carbonization of the organic matter in the oil-bearing formations; (3) folding of the strata; (4) thickness of sedimentary formations; (5) conditions of deposition.

SINCE the very early work on quenched structures, where the products of the martensite transformation had been recognized, this transformation has provoked much interest and study. Theoretically it was desirable to account for the extreme changes in physical properties resulting from the formation of martensite, as that information might lead to results of practical importance. Desirable information, therefore, was on the kinetics of transformation from austenite to martensite as well as on the physical constitution of the martensite. It has been known for years that certain steels quenched to room temperature will contain persistent austenite as well as martensite. Other important and now well- established features of the martensite reaction are the progress of the reaction on cooling only and the independence of Ar" with cooling velocities exceeding the critical velocity. These facts have been experimentally determined by various methods and investigators. Notable among the early investigators were Tammann and Scheill and Wever and Engel.2 Unfortunately, all investigators did not fully interpret their results, which, coupled with several investigations that yielded conficting results, caused a state of confusion that was not clarified until quite recently. X-ray investigations of martensite in steels3-6 indicate it to be a supersaturated solid solution of carbon in alpha iron. This supersaturation is evident from the appearance of a body-centered tetragonal structure with the addition of sufficient carbon. The dimensions of this tetragonal structure are alinear function of the carbon content within the limits of accuracy of the determinations. Slight tempering of tetragonal martensite leads to the destruction of the tetragonal structure, which is converted to a body-centered cubic structure. This phenomenon has precipitated a controversy concerning the nature and mechanism of the tempering of martensite. The facts in the case have been outlined by Epstein7 and more recently by Antia, Fletcher, and Cohen.8 The significance of Ar" on theoretical grounds is not clear, however, although considerable study has been devoted to its determination. The precise position of Ar" as a function of carbon content was first stated by Greninger and Troianos for steels covering a range of approximately 0.7 to 1.8 per cent carbon. The effect of alloying elements on Ar" has recently been the subject matter of investigation by various methods.

WHEN one solid phase is generated from another, fixed and rational orientation relationships are observed to subsist between the parent and the new crystal. The principle has been proposed' that the relationships obtaining between the same two phases are identical whatever the type of phase change involved, or whichever of the phases may act as parent. Many types of phase changes have been studied: allotropic transformations in pure metals, precipitation from solid solutions, eutectoid decompositions, peritectic reactions, the formation of oxide layers, and others.2 Phase layers generated by diffusion of one metal into another constitute an additional type of reaction. This report provides new data on the orientation relationships occurring between , phase layers formed by diffusion, in the Cu-Zn system, § and furnishes further evidence in support of the principle. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Cu-Zn system is especially suitable for these studies since the high vapor pressure of Zn provides an opportunity readily to create one phase poorer in Zn upon a parent phase richer in Zn by removing Zn by vaporization, or to reverse this process by adding Zn from Zn vapor; e.g., the beta phase can be found as a layer upon gamma by dezincing, or gamma can be found on beta by addition of Zn from Zn vapor. Since orientation relationships are to be sought, requiring crystals large enough for orientation determinations, it is convenient to prepare single crystals or large grains of the parent phase. The samples were prepared from oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and Horse Head zinc by melting under a borax flux in a graphite crucible. Large crystals of beta brass were grown by the strain-anneal method, in plates sectioned from the cast ingots, by the following procedure. Rockwell-hardness indents were made at I cm. intervals-and with various loads, then the plates were annealed for .4 days at 700°C. in Nichrome boxes packed with beta-brass chips and graphite. Surface layers were removed by grinding and etching to a depth of about 1.0 mm., and individual grains were cut out. Crystals of alpha and gamma brass were prepared by freezing, by lowering a graphite crucible at speeds less than one inch per hour through a furnace held at a constant temperature above the melting point. Single crystals were cut out with a jeweler's saw, ground, polished and etched. Care was taken to remove cold worked layers from the finished crystals

With the application of dislocation damping theory an attempt was made to determine whether the generation and extension of dislocations is inherently more difficult in a brittle steel than in a ductile steel. A ductile steel was compared with a brittle stee1 by simultaneously measuring the ultrasonic attenuation and velocity during tensile test, and the density of free dislocations and their mean loop length were then calculated as a function of strain. The results showed that in the ductile steel there was always a large generation of dislocations and great extension of loop length occurring at some stage within the early plastic region. In contrast, the brittle steel showed very little or no such sudden changes in dislocation dynamic states after the onset of plastic deformation. Furthermore, a strong temperature dependence of dislocation dynamic states was also observed in the ductile steel and a hypothesis was suggested that a thermally activated process of dislocation rearrangement could occur at higher deformation temperatures. The activation energy of dislocation rearrangement at room temperature was estimated as about 2030 cal per mole.C. DUCTILITY is an indispensible property in the application of engineering materials, especially steel. During the past two decades the theoretical and experimental approach to the understanding of flow and fracture of metals has been constantly undergoing changes and progress." while the fracture behavior of metals can be influenced by many factors such as chemical Composition,3 second-phase particle mor-phology,4 and dislocation arrangement,5 it is now a general belief that the fundamental understanding of the ductile-brittle fracture phenomena of solid materials must stem from the study of dislocation dv-namics developed under stress conditions.6,7 Most of the traditional ductility tests, such as Charpy impact test, slow bend test, and tensile fracture test, cannot by themselves reveal directly the mechanisms of ductile to brittle transition of materials. In the experimental investigation of tensile ductility it would be ideal to be able to study directly the dynamics of dis-locations in a bulk specimen during the process of deformation. Since the ultrasonic pulse technique is the only satisfactory method for studying dislocations and the fine details of deformation characteristics in metals in the course of a tensile test, it would appear that a comparative study of ultrasonic attenuation changes during tensile tests of metallic materials exhibiting different ductility might be very informative. So far no work comparable to this study has appeared in the literature. Recent progress in both theory and experiment has indicated the feasibility of studying the dislocation mechanisms of ductility behaviors by ultrasonic measurements during tensile test. Granato and Lucke8 have developed a quantitative theory that enables the calculation of dislocation density and their average loop length from the measurements of ultrasonic attenuation and velocity, and several investigators, including Chiao and Gordon,9'10 have shown that simultaneous ultrasonic measurements can be successfully made during a tensile test. Furthermore, many investigators11-13 have repeatedly proposed in the past several decades that deformation and fracture are mutually self-exclusive, and that the ability or inability of a material to deform plastically, i.e., to generate dislocations, is a major factor in determining whether the material will be ductile or brittle. Thus, in the present work an attempt was made to determine whether the generation and extension of dislocations is inherently more difficult in a brittle steel than in a ductile steel. This article is principally concerned with the study of the relation between the propagation of ultrasonic waves and tensile deformation in a steel series which displays quite different toughness at room tempera-turk. changes in attenuation and velocity of ultrasonic waves have been measured as a function of strain during the deformation process. The results have been interpreted in terms of the vibrating string model for dislocation damping as developed by Granato and Lucke, and it has been found that some of the more subtle predications of the model are in good agreement with the experiments. This would be especially meaningful because most of the previous experiments in testfying the model were carried out with single crystals of high-purity materials and little work has been done with polycrystalline steel alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS Specimen Materials. The tensile specimens used throughout this experiment were of two compositions selected from a series of Fe-Mo-0.77 pct Mn-0.22 pct C steels prepared for a ductile-brittle fracture transition study. One steel contains 0.21 pct Mo and the other 1.03 pct Mo. These two compositions were chosen for the present study because they possess quite different toughness properties at room temperature. The 0.21 pct Mo steel is quite ductile while the 1.03 pct Mo steel is rather brittle, as measured by the standard Charpy impact test. The alloys had been prepared by vacuum induction melting and chill casting in steel molds. The ingots were hammer-forged into 1/2-in.-sq bars from which tensile specimen blanks were cut. These blanks were first normalized under argon atmosphere at 1700°F and then reaus-tenitized and isothermally transformed at 1050°F to a bainitic microstructure. The chemical compositions, heat treatments, hardness measurements, and Charpy transition temperatures of the two steels are listed in Table I.

All the fields covered in this investigation yielded a product of a gas-oil ratio in excess of 5000 cu ft per barrel and the gravity of the tank oil for the four fields in question varied between 52° and 63' API. The results of the investigation, together with analytical data concerning the composition of the oil and gas, are submitted in tabular form. Rough correlations of the formation volume as a function of pressure, temperature, and gas-oil ratio and of the retrograde dew-point pressure as a function of gas-oil ratio, temperature, and gravity of tank oil are presented. It was not found feasible to correlate simply the formation volume of the liquid phase as a function of the applicable variable. It is desired to emphasize that these correlations are considered applicable only to the range of conditions covered in this investigation and for systems of similar nature and composition. There are many solution mining operations that use solar ponds as a mineral recovery step. Other locations in the world are now under investigation to recover minerals by solution mining but require the cheap energy of solar ponds to make the recovery viable. This paper shows a step-by-step material balance system that can be used in both simple and complex solar ponds. Use of this system will help the engineer determine if solar ponding efficiency can be improved or if solar ponding will work at all with a given set of conditions. Even the most complicated solar pond can be reduced to six flow streams. These are (1) feed, (2) exit, (3) leakage, (4) entrainment, (5) salts, and (6) evaporation. The equations developed in this paper will allow the solar pond engineer to easily evaluate the effect of each of the flow streams on the mineral production of a pond or pond complex.

The conditioning of semifinished steel products such as billets, blooms, and slabs to remove surface defects before further processing to finished products is a necessary accompaniment to steel mill rolling operations. A knowledge of the kinds of defects which occur and of the conditions in melting, teeming, and rolling that may lead to their occurrence is favorable to the production of quality products. Surface defects may be classed as either of mechanical origin such as those that occur in the heating and rolling operations and include breaks, tears, guide marks, mechanical laps and the like, or they may have been in the ingot before heating and rolling. Examples of the latter are ingot cracks, blow-holes, scabs, and inclusions which lead to the numerous known types of seams and surface flaws. Most of the common types of surface defects and methods for their identification by visual examination or by the aid of macro-etch tests are well known. The conditions which caused their formation are also appreciably understood and this knowledge has been instrumental in the establishment of methods for metallurgical control. There are, however, defects of doubtful origin. In any endeavor to trace the causes for their occurrence, the question of first concern is: I. Whether they were formed in the rolling procedure. 2. Whether they existed in the ingot prior to rolling. In the case of semifinished products which are rerolled to finished products there is also the question of whether they were formed in the primary or in the secondary rolling. In metallurgical laboratories where numerous or routine examinations of the quality of rolled products are made over the course of time, there will doubtless be many puzzling cases of defect origin. Microscopic examination of the defects may, however, reveal a characterizing condition that can be used to classify them broadly with respect to their origin. Such a condition has been observed and, after detailed investigation, is described here with the thought that it may offer a usable and relatively simple solution to a bothersome problem. Basis For Classifying In this discussion the term "mechanical type defects" will be used to designate those that have occurred as a result of the rolling operations such as in rolling from the ingot to billets, blooms, or slabs or in rerolling to finished products. The term "steel type defects" will be used to designate those that were present in the ingot prior to primary rolling or that were in the semifinished product prior to secondary rolling to finished product. Measurements have been mode of the effects of tempering and austenitizing heat treatments, the work-hardening characteristics, and the effects of test temperature and strain rate on the properties of a low-carbon Fe-18 pet Ni martensitic alloy. In many respects the alloy behaved quite similarly to cold-worked iron. One notable quality was the excellent ductility at temperatures as low as 20°K. Many of the qualities of the maraging steels could he related to the properties of the Fe-Ni matrix. THE 18 pet Ni maraging steels have demonstrated that unusual combinations of strength and toughness may be obtained by age hardening a low-carbon Fe-Ni martensite matrix.' These properties must, to some extent, reflect the properties of this Fe-Ni matrix, and therefore an understanding of the properties of this matrix is a prerequisite to a complete understanding of the steels. There have been several recent studies of Fe-Ni-C martensites, but not much attention has been paid to alloys with very low carbon contents. At low carbon levels the crystal structure of these alloys is essentially bee.2 Electron transmission microscopic examination of a 20 pet Ni binary alloy showed martensite platelets separated by low angle boundaries.3 Plastic deformation of the low-carbon alloys has been shown to proceed by wavy glide.4 The hardness of these martensites is typically RC 28, and their yield strengths are 70 to 80 kg per sq mm.2, 5 Their ductility is excellent. Room-temperature tensile elongations of 18 pet and reductions of area of 70 pet have been observed in an Fe-18 pet Ni binary alloy.5 These observations have provided a qualitative understanding of the flow characteristics of these alloys. To date, however, no thorough study of their properties has been made. In particular, it is not known to what extent the deformation characteristics of low-carbon martensites are similar or dissimilar to those of pure iron or other bee metals. The present work was undertaken to provide more detailed information on the flow characteristics of a low-carbon Fe-18 pet Ni martensite. PROCEDURES, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION Materials. A 40-lb heat of the Fe-18 pet Ni alloy used in this study was made by vacuum-induction melting. The charge materials were electrolytic iron and electrolytic nickel. A carbon boil was used to achieve deoxidation. After the boil the heat was refined by additions of 0.1 wt pet Ti and Al. These additions are commonly used in the maraging steels to keep the carbon and nitrogen contents in solid solution at a minimum. After casting, the heat was

Aqueous SO2 (sulfurous acid) is an interesting chemical compound. It functions as a reagent in various hydrometallurgical systems, but also represents an undesirable constituent in gyro- and hydrometallurgical effluent solutions. When present in such streams, SO2 can be oxidized to the more stable sulfate form to avoid exsolution of SO2 as a source of fugitive emissions and to simplify standard water treatment plant operation. This study provides information on the stoichiometry, kinetics, and mechanism of SO2 oxidation using oxygen and an iron salt catalyst with solutions containing 0.05-20 g/L (0.002-0.7 oz per gal) SO2. The effects of iron salt concentration, oxygen pressure, temperature, degree of agitation, and pH on SO2 oxidation are also described.
