The isothermal formation of martensite in a 71 pct Fe, 29 pct Ni alloy is found to take place mainly by the nucleation of new plates rather than by the growth of existing ones, and is dependent on the temperature and time of the isothermal hold, the amount of atherrnal martensite present, the state of internal strain, and the application of tensile stress. The conclusion is reached that the isothermal nucleation is activated by thermal fluctuations superimposed on localized regions of very high strain. The reaction-path concept, involving martensite nucleation at strain embryos by athermal activation on cooling, or by thermal fluctuations on holding, reconciles the athermal and isothermal modes of transformation, and offers a unified picture of the kinetics of martensite formation. THE phenomenon of isothermal martensite formation has been the subject of considerable study lately,'-' and its reality has been thoroughly established. The existence of such isothermal transformation has been claimed to confirm the nucleation and growth hypothesis as applied to the martensitic reaction.1 " However, the isothermal formation of a martensitic phase is also compatible with the reaction-pathw escription of the transformation. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the isothermal mode of the martensitic reaction, both theoretically and experimentally, in order to test the likelihood of the above two mechanisms. Material and Methods The alloy used in this study contained about 71 pct Fe and 29 pct Ni. The complete analysis was 29.5 ± 0.2 pct Ni, 0.036 pct C, 0.02 pct N, 0.19 pct Mn, 0.09 pct Si, 0.008 pct P, and 0.006 pct S. The amount of isothermal transformation was determined by electrical resistance measurements using a Kelvin double bridge. The specimens were in the form of rods 1/16 in. diam x 4 in. long. Aus-tenitizing was performed at 1095°C for % hr either in a pre-purified nitrogen atmosphere or in an evacuated Vycor tube, followed by oil quenching to room temperature. After this treatment, the samples were completely austenitic, and the transformation studies were conducted at subatmospheric tempera- tures. Lineal analysis and X-ray determinations of retained austenite were used to calibrate the electrical resistance changes in terms of the percentage of martensite. The martensite range curve for this alloy is given in Fig. 9 of ref. 6. The M, temperature occurs at about -18°C (255°K). Reaction-Path Theory The nucleation and growth description of the martensitic transformation that occurs isothermally has already been given by Kurdjumow.','2 However, no comparable treatment exists using the reaction-path concept." Consequently this section presents the reaction-path description of the isothermal mode of the martensitic transformation. According to the latter theory, there is a reaction path (a strain) which describes the relative motion of the atoms during their transference from the austenitic to the martensitic state. The possibility exists, therefore, that the nucleation of a martensitic plate is accomplished by an embryo that comprises a state intermediate between that of austenite and martensite. This state may be attained within a finite volume by means of a homogeneous strain of the austenitic matrix. There is a free-energy barrier (F.) along the reaction path, corresponding to a critical strain in a critical volume. When activation is achieved, a spontaneous increase in strain and volume of the embryo takes place to generate the full-size martensitic plate. This mode of nucleation is to be distinguished from the more conventional mode involving embryos of the martensitic phase that merely grow in size by an interface motion. There are two ways whereby embryos in the austenitic phase can achieve the critical state of strain for isothermal nucleation: 1—through the formation of internal strains by plastic deformation or by stress; and 2—through thermal fluctuations, preferably superimposed upon existing internal strains. The activation free energy F,, must be supplied either mechanically by internal strains or thermally by energy fluctuations, or by a combination of both.

This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at, longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), Fig. 1. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

THOMAS CROWE,* Victor, Colo.-The interest manifested of late in the treatment of low-grade ores, together with Mr. Clevenger's discussion of the Mill and Metallurgical Practice of the Nipissing Mining Co., prompts me to acid a few remarks relative to concentration in connection with cyanide treatment of low-grade ores. Mr. Clevenger in this discussion does not condemn concentration in this connection, but, nevertheless, the tone of his remarks would lead one to believe that his conclusions are like those of many others: that concentration is often turned to as a last resort in an attempt to improve or obtain an extraction upon an ore by the recovery and sale of the refractory portion of the ore. This, I will attempt to point out, is not always the case. Concentration in connection with cyanidation often performs an entirely different function, i.e., one of saving fine grinding. Economy being the keynote of successful treatment of low-grade ores, the problem often becomes more commercial than metallurgical, and, as there is generally a definite ratio existing between cost of operation, degree of comminution, and percentage of extraction, the grade of ore under treatment usually imposes a limit upon these factors. With many ores grinding is the most expensive single item in their treatment; therefore, the degree of comminution is very apt to be governed by the allowable cost of operation. With most ores the degree of comminution controls to a great extent the percentage of extraction. So in the treatment of low-grade ore it often becomes necessary to sacrifice extraction, through coarse grinding for the benefit of cost, in order that the greatest ultimate profit may be obtained, and it is under these conditions that it is, possible for concentration to play an important part in overcoming to some extent the effect of mesh. The precious metals occurring in an ore are usually closely associated with the metallic portion of the ore, and as this metallic portion is generally fairly well liberated from the gangue at comparatively coarse meshes, further grinding of the ore is necessary only in order that the metallic portion may be reduced sufficiently fine that the precious metal part of it may be dissolved by cyanide solutions in a reasonable length of time.

ACTIVITY values for sulphur dissolved in liquid iron and slags as functions of composition and temperature are needed in applying thermodynamics to sulphur-control problems in iron- and ' steel-making. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of carbon on the activity of sulphur in the metal phase. The method employed was the same as that used in an earlier investigation' concerning the effect of silicon on sulphur activity in liquid iron. A study was made of the conditions of equilibrium in the reaction between hydrogen gas and sulphur dissolved in iron-carbon alloys. The chemical equation for this reaction can be written as follows: S (in liquid Fe-C alloy) + H2 (gas) = H2S (gas). It was found that the activity coefficient of sulphur in liquid iron increases as the carbon content increases. At 2.3 pct carbon and 1600 °C, the activity coefficient of sulphur is twice its value in carbon-free iron, and at carbon saturation it is more than six times as great. The effect of temperature on sulphur activity was found to be small. Previous work on the reaction between hydrogen gas and sulphur dissolved in liquid iron has been reported by several investigators2,³,4 but only recently have studies been made of the effect of alloying elements. Silicon1 is known to have a pronounced influence on the activity of sulphur in iron, its effect being similar to that shown by carbon as described in the present report. Kitchener, Bockris, and Liber-man5 recently have published a preliminary report of their work on the effect of carbon on sulphur activity in iron. Their experiments were made at 1570°C and carbon saturation in the melt. Under these conditions they found that the activity coefficient of sulphur was approximately doubled by the presence of carbon. This is a much smaller effect than that found in the present work. Experimental Method: The apparatus and procedure were essentially the same as those used in the earlier investigation of the effect of silicon on sulphur activity.' Briefly, the method was as follows: A molten iron-carbon alloy was brought to equilibrium at constant temperature with a mixture of H2 and H2S of constant composition by bubbling the gas through the metal. The wall-building properties of salt-water drilling muds can be improved markedly by the addition of: (I) natural gums, such as traga-canth, karaya, and ghatti; (2) seaweeds, such as Irish moss; or (3) gelatinized starch. Results of laboratory tests have been confirmed by field trials. For drilling operations in which the mud becomes contaminated by salt, either through penetrating salt-bearing rocks or by addition of sea water to the mud, the added cost resulting from the use of one of the substances listed above is more than offset by freedom from stuck drill pipe and ease in running casing. Introduction It has been recognized for many years that oil production might be seriously hampered by infiltration of water from the drilling mud.l-4 As knowledge of the mechanism of the wall-building process advanced, methods were developed for evaluating the filtration characteristics of muds.5-ll The wall-building properties of freshwater muds are commonly regulated by the addition of bentonitic clays, or of agents to promote the dispersion of the natural mud solids. When strata bearing soluble salts are encountered in the course of drilling, the salts are incorporated in the mud; the clay solids are flocculated and water loss is increased tremendously. Methods gen-crally used in controlling filtration of freshwater muds are no longer applicable. The problem of reducing water loss from salt-water muds is not confined to any particular area, but is acute in parts of West Texas. Salt beds several hundred feet thick must be penetrated before the oil-bearing formation is reached. Since the formation drilled does not provide mud-making material, it is necessary to use large quantities of commercial clays, and even the best commercial clay does not afford relief from the problem of high filtration. A laboratory study has been made of methods of improving the filtration characteristics of salt-water muds, and some of the methods have been used in field practice. Laboratory Investigations Procedure Inasmuch as the immediate object of the investigation was the development of means of improving the wall-building properties of muds used in West Texas, an attempt was made to employ muds in the laboratory study comparable to those in field use. Samples of muds used in drilling the producing formations in six wells were secured. The properties of these samples are summarized in Table I, which lists the densities, viscosities, filtrations, and analyses of the filtrates for calcium, chloride, and sulphate. Viscosity was measured in the Stormer viscosimeter at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester8 at a pressure of 100 lb. per sq. in. Filtration rates are considerably higher than those of usual fresh-water muds, which amount to about 20 C.C. in 30 min. Water loss was so rapid in samples 4, 5 and 6 that filtration was complete in less than 10 min. and the values for 30 min. were extrapolated from the rates at shorter

THE Cartersville mining district, 35 miles northwest of Atlanta, Ga., has been of varying but continuous importance in the southern mineral industry during the past century. Noted chiefly for its production of brown iron ore, manganese oxide ores, barite, sienna, and magnesian limestone, the district and its environs have produced brick and tile clays, slate, gold, bauxite, and graphitic schist. Minor deposits of serpentine, sericite schist, copper ore, and red iron oxide have been prospected. The obvious deposits of brown iron ore, together with some associated specular hematite, were mined out years ago, although a little ore was left in the workings. Moderately steady production of sienna reached a peak about 1930, then declined rapidly. Manganese mining passed through a relatively active period from the World War to 1931, but has subsided to a small but rather constant output for the Birmingham market. However, the White Manganese Corporation has prepared for possible increased production by constructing a new washer capable of handling about 300 tons of ore per day. Principal activity in the district proper has centered for some years in the production of barite and magnesian limestone. GENERAL GEOLOGY Geologic relations of the ore deposits of this district are more or less similar to those of many Appalachian districts. The lowermost Cambrian formation, heretofore called Weisner1 in this region, supposedly partly or wholly equivalent to the Erwin and Hesse quartzites as recognized to the northeast, is overlain conformably by the Shady [+] formation, also of Lower Cambrian age. In the Cartersville district, the sedimentary rocks of these formations were folded with increasing intensity eastward, and were recrystallized.

HE who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be entered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is extinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royalties from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient.

Froth flotation is now used to recover millions of tons of fine coal,(-1/2 mm), every year. For example, in Great Britain, 4-million tons of flotation concentrate was produced in 1960, about 3% of the mechanically cleaned out- put and 2% of the total salable output. Coal flotation is not so widely practiced in the U. S. as it is in Europe since much American coal occurs in thick seams of high grade and does not require cleaning. However, in the U. S., as elsewhere, the increasing mechanization of coal mining machinery has lead to a lowering in size and grade of product from the mine and to an increasing need for cleaning of coal to improve the grade before sale. With an increasing proportion of fines in the product, froth flotation has assumed a greater importance as a cleaning process for coal. In the last three years, over 40 flotation plants have been put into operation in the Appalachian area of the U. S.80 Fine coal recovered by means of froth flotation may be used as a powdered fuel alone or mixed with coarser grades. The removal of this fine coal from washery water makes possible the recirculation and re-use of the water and also leads to improved and more consistent operation of jigs and other separating machines which function less effectively when there is a build-up of fine solids in the washery water. Finally, froth flotation is of assistance in the production of a clarified effluent which may be discharged from the washery without polluting local rivers, streams, or wells. The 1961 cost of installing a new coal flotation plant in Great Britain would be about $19,000 per ton of dry solids input per hour, including the cost of new buildings and coal and shale filtration and water clarification equipment. The figure for the gravity concentration of the large coal, the main plant, would be about $4,800 per tph. The operating cost for the new coal flotation plant would be about $1.10 per ton. Even at this level of cost the cleaning operation is economic in Great Britain for coking coals. In the U. S., a froth flotation cost of 14$per ton of cleanfilter cake was quoted early in 1958 for one operation,l though admittedly this was a special case. Assuming a cake moisture con- tent of 30%, it is estimated that this cost is equivalent to a figure of 256 per ton of dry solids input, for the incorporation of coal flotation in an existing washery. A cost oh 416 per ton of concentrate was quoted76 in a recent analysis of flotation economics, this cost being brought up to $1.11 per ton after payment of royalty, welfare and association dues and taxes. Capital cost was $120,000 for a plant producing 133 tpd of concentrate. Before considering the treatment of coal by flotation it is appropriate to survey some of the properties of coal which are of importance in the process.

The method of measurement of surface on quartz particles was given in a previous paper.' With such a method the relation of surface produced in crushing quartz can be compared to the work in crushing without recourse to sieve sizing or microscopic measurement. In crushing, the work input must be known with a fair degree of accuracy. With crushers, rolls, ball mills, and similar apparatus the measurement of the work in crushing is subject to possible errors, due to friction in the transmission as well as in the machine itself. Moreover, relatively large quantities of material must be crushed to get an average figure. In the selection of a method of crushing, simplicity in design and operation was desired and this was most readily obtained by the use of a free-falling body. A description of the apparatus embodying this principle is given herewith. The Crushing Device The apparatus used is shown in Fig. 1 and in cross-section in Fig. 2. The material to be crushed is placed in the crushing chamber C in the steel mortar M. The mortar is 3 in. dia. by 3 in. high. Two mortars are used, one having a crushing chamber 1 in. dia. by 36 in. deep, with a capacity of 4 g. of quartz, the other having a crushing chamber 1 1/2-in. dia. by % in. deep, with a capacity of 12 g. of quartz. The position of the mortar is adjusted by means of three centering screws A. The steel plunger P, which fits neatly into the chamber, is placed on top of the material to be crushed. Plungers of different lengths were tried and as they were found to give practically identical results the length adopted was equal to the depth of -the chamber. The mortar rests on a solid steel base B but is separated therefrom

Sherritt's new, 3000 tpd, copper- zinc Fox mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn Lake. The copper-zinc orebody is part of a large body of massive and semi-massive sulfides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9s Fe) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The average sulfide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content. Surface diamond drilling indicated an orebody containing 12,269,000 tons grading 1.74% Cu and 2.35% Zn to the 2000 ft level. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the practical results obtained in several problems of civil engineering by resistivity measurements of the underground. It is intended for the mining engineer, as well as for the construction engineer; the stratigraphical problems discussed are general and frequently are encountered in mining exploration. Resistivity measurements have been used in mining and oil exploration for a number of years.' Their introduction in the field of civil engineering, on the contrary, is rather recent. It was applied for the first time in the spring of 1928 near Littleton, N. H., in the survey of two dam sites for the New England Power Assn.2 Since then, the geophysical firm with which the author is connected has had an opportunity to develop this field of activity, and more than 20 investigations at dam and tunnel sites have been carried out in the United States and Canada. A part of this work has been verified by underground or drilling exploration. This paper deals with but a few of the results, which we are permitted to make public now. The theoretical and technical sides of the processes employed will not be discussed; they have already been described in various technical publications. Using en; 41 for a base alloy, 15 modifications were made in sheet form. The elements Al, Ti, C, Mo, Co, and Cb were varied. The effects on the phases formed and their temperature dependence, the aging characteristics, tensile and stress-rup- ture properties, and weld cracking were determined. The A1-Ti content and balance is the most important factor influencing the major sCrengthening phases [Ni,Ti and Ni,(Al, Ti)] and, consequently, mechanical properties. THE mechanical properties, fabricating and joining characteristics, dimensional stability, and so forth, of alloys containing secondary phases are largely determined by the phases present, their distribution, and their temperature dependence. The phases in the basic ternary and quaternary Ni-Cr-Al-Ti combina- tions have been investigated thoroughly.'* The phase behavior of many commercial nickel-base alloys has been determined also. In some cases, for example U500, 5 the effect on mechanical properties has been found. However, little systematic work has been done to clarify the action of each of the important alloying elements in controlling the phases formed in complex commercial alloys and their behavior. IT is proposed to discuss the materials and furnaces, as well as the melting procedures used in preparing metal for casting billets, bars or cakes for mill fabrication. As far as possible, consideration will be given to the alloys that are commonly made in most brass mills producing strip, tube, rod and wire. RAW MATERIAL The basic raw material for such mills, of course, is copper, which may be obtained in the form of ingots, ingot bars or cathodes. Refinery-cast ingots and ingot bars, which are simply double ingots, are supplied in accordance with A.S.T.M. Specifications as regular electrolytic or fire-refined tough-pitch copper. In the wrought-metal industry, the electrolytic brands have been preferred, although during the war large quantities of fire-refined coppers sufficiently pure to be suitable for all existing requirements were imported from South America. With the exception of Lake copper, most primary fire refined coppers produced in this country have not been considered satisfactory for wrought metal alloys. Cathode copper, which is now widely used instead of ingot copper for alloying, is the electrolytically deposited metal that is normally remelted in the production of electrolytic tough-pitch ingots. It is in the form of rough, flat plates not suitable for processing but quite satisfactory for melting when sheared into suitable sizes. Raw zinc is perhaps the next most important raw material and this is obtained in various grades, depending on the analytical requirements of the alloy to be made. The grades of zinc as outlined in the A.S.T.M. Specifications vary in cost with the amount of impurities-lead, iron, cadmium-and are purchased in such a way as to produce the most economical mixture consistent with the purity required in the alloy. Other virgin metals (lead, tin, aluminum and nickel) are used in varying quantities for making copper alloys. These elements can also be purchased in accordance with the appropriate A.S.T.M. Specifications where available. Also available are a number of special alloys, which are used as deoxidizers or as means of adding relatively small quantities of elements not suitable for adding directly as virgin metal. In this category are such materials as phosphor copper or phosphor tin, silicon copper, manganese copper, cadmium copper, and copper-iron or zinc-iron alloys. Some of these alloys may be purchased on a definite alloy basis or may be produced in the plant itself for its own use. For largely economic reasons, however, a great proportion of the charge to the melting furnaces consists of alloy scrap. In the production of many finished products, as much as 70 or 75 per cent of the metal originally cast may be discarded at various points along the production line. This material eventually finds its way back to the casting shop as mill scrap, overhaul or scalping chips, skeleton scrap, rod turnings, or miscellaneous fabricating scrap.
