Current problems in predicting sub-surface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining have highlighted the need for more accurate, dependable methods of physical modelling of rock mechanics problems which are beyond the capabilities of current mathematical techniques. Physical model studies of the caved zone above the working faces up to the base of a water source are of importance in attempting to understand changes in mass permeability due to induced fracture zones and the resulting ground water conditions. Turkey's most important supplies of coking coals are to be found within the hard coal resources of the Black Sea coast. Coal seams up to 9 metres thick, dipping at angles as steep as 90 degrees are being successfully mined at the Kozlu Mine. Since 1956, mining operations have been carried out under the sea in dry conditions. The undersea mining conditions of the Kozlu Mine have been investigated using scaled physical models constructed from artificial materials which satisfied necessary scaling requirements. Models representing the in-situ conditions were tested and the following extraction sequence was employed: 1. The Sulu Seam extraction 2. The Acilik Seam extraction (as two slices) 3. The Piric Seam extraction. The displacement of the fixed reference points were subsequently measured using a high precision photogrammetric technique and induced horizontal and vertical strains were calculated.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330-p.s.i. tension to 3,750 p.s.i. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock mo.odel mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a. borehole oxtensumeter and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a. vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face waa.s advanced the roofmovement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The ma.j ority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a. radioactive isotope and a. scintillation counter in a. pair of parallel bcreholes promises to be sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.

Fire suppression systems are but one of the many technologies currently available to manage operational tunnel risks. However, the actual reasons for their use are often shrouded in mischievous discussions of the marketing variety.The international tunnelling community still stands divided on the merits (or otherwise) of fire suppression systems. For some the debate focuses on their cost compared to the theoretical benefits they bring to human safety.Long standing concerns about their potential adverse effects in an emergency are often at odds with the experience from tunnels which use them. High installation and operational costs are cited as reasons not to use them, yet toll road operators and insurers increasingly use them as a risk mitigation strategy for toll revenue protection.Fact or fiction, myth or reality, should such systems be seriously entertained or are they just another expensive gadget in the escalating array of expensive toys for modern tunnels? Ultimately this presentation argues that they have their place as a risk mitigation measure to achieve a range of objectives. The global recession of the 1980s drove commodity prices down and intensified cost competition. The 1990s saw a restructuring of the mining industry with the survivors adopting new technology, significantly increasing workplace productivity and reducing capital and operating costs. Major changes in mining industry business strategies evolved in the late-1980s including the development of miner - supplier - manufacturer - partnerships, cultural changes in work practices and common goals between the partners to reduce the cost of production. These industry trends are putting new demands on mining machine manufacturers and dealers both on the `hard' side of the machine business, such as research and product development programs, and on the `soft' side in terms of business processes, use of human resources and communication. The paper describes several mining industry trends as identified by a large supplier to the industry, and discusses the impact they are having, and will have, on mining machine development and the provision of product support services to the industry.

We investigated the duration of formation of the giant Ok Tedi porphyry copper-gold deposit in Papua New Guinea using zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating. The intrusions that host the Cu-Au mineralisation have a maximum age of 1.43 ¦ 0.22 Ma. Since previously published K-Ar dates on the same intrusion constrain the last thermal event at 1.11 ¦ 0.05 Ma, we conclude that the magmatic-hydrothermal event that produced the deposit lasted ~0.45 million years (Myr). A comparison of Ok TediÆs calculated volatile fluxes with those from arc volcanoes and active mineralising hydrothermal systems suggests that the efficiency of metal deposition is a key factor in determining the duration of deposit formation. Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for pigment.The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges. Many of the new discoveries were not properly evaluated and companies were floated on the most tenuous evidence.

Fracture zones are commonly found in the Earth’s crust. These zones may cause very severe engineering problems. Therefore, the formation and the assessment of the mechanical characteristics of these zones is of great concern for rock engineers. A new double shearing jig was used to study the formation of shear zones in rock under static and impact loading conditions using the device developed by the authors. A series of experiments were undertaken to investigate formation on the formation and characteristics of fracture zones in laboratory. Although actual fracture zones are more complicated, various tests give some insight view of the formation of fracture zones as well as some information on their mechanical behaviour under both dynamic conditions and static conditions. The authors report the outcomes of these experiments and discuss their implications in practice.

The sampling of a run-of-mine (ROM) ore with the objective of controlling the fundamental variance associated with the sampling step is a poorly understood subject. Finding the effective sampling constant by repetitive sampling to establish the variance between nominally identical subsamples of a given mass of the ore is a laborious, time-consuming and very expensive exercise. In this paper, the run-of-mine ore is modelled using three components: ore, waste, and relatively fine material which shows significant liberation of the mineral phase(s) carrying the target analyte. The expression for the sampling constant of the mixture is developed from first principles. The form of the equation provides insight into the factors that are important in controlling the magnitude of the sampling constant and hence the fundamental uncertainty associated with a given mass of sample. The controlling factors are shown to be the size distribution of the ore/waste mixture, the proportion of waste mixed with the ore and the extent of liberation and the size distribution of the liberated material in the finer fractions.

Many aspects of the physical layout of manufacturing plants and storage facilities for explosives are governed by so-called quantity-distances tables. Both the British and the American tables were originally derived from an analysis of the injuries and the building damage documented by an early 20th century compilation of significant accidental explosions. However, progressive changes in explosive process technology and in building techniques have reduced the relevance of much of this historic data set. Extensive scientific research has been conducted over recent decades to characterise the potential injuries and damage from accidental explosions under more modern conditions. The I,)hyllosilicate mineral chlorite is a common constituent of altered rocks associated with volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, and literature studies indicate that, in general, this mineral is progressively enriched in magnesium relative to iron as an orebody is approached. Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between the Mg/Mg + Fe ratio of chlorite and its absorption spectra in the 2.7 to 3.0 um range. However, this region, which contains the fundamental 0-H stretch absorption features, is affected by intense atmospheric absorption, and therefore cannot be used for remote sensing. At shorter wavelengths (0.4 - 2.5um), there are windows where the atmosphere is sufficiently transparent and vibrational absorption bands still occur, although they are clue to overtones and combinations, and accord- ingly are much weaker than the fundamental features. Shifts to longer wavelengths with increasing iron content can still be observed in this region of the spectrum and, with better spectral resolution and sensitivity, it may be possible to monitor subtle variations in chlorite chemist by remote sensing techniques.

Calcium aluminates, calcium aluminate ferrate and calcium aluminate sulfate were synthesised by solid-state reaction, sol-gel method, a self-combustion method and by a polymeric precursor process. For chemical sintering methods the base chemicals CaO, CaSO4, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 were used. As precursors for sol-gel synthesis metal nitrate hydrates and Al2O3-Sol were used. In order to synthesise pure phases by a self-combustion reaction glycine was used as fuel and nitrates as metal components. In the polymeric precursor process metal nitrates and diluted H2SO4 were used as metal components and the resin was made using citric acid (C6H8O7) and ethylene glycol (C2H6O2). Precursor phases synthesised by these different methods were sintered step-by-step in order to investigate the crystallisation. Further on single phases were hydrated and their hydration behaviour was studied by heat flow calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and cryo-transfer scanning electron microscopy. Due to the different synthesis procedures different hydration reactions and microstructures of the phases will be shown.

The ore mined from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangano-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations.Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14 - 18 per cent lead; 3.0 - 4.5 oz silver per tonne, and 9.5 - 12.0 per cent zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from six to eight per cent lead, 1.5 oz silver per ton, 18 - 25 per cent zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals, calcite, rhodonite, bustamite - are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce:1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufftcient granular material to be utilised as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of jigging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Two primary grinding sections were installed, each consisting of two 5 ft diameter by 10ft long tube mills loaded with flint pebbles working in closed circuit with four 3 ft diameter by 3 ft wide revolving screens covered with 22mesh Toncap woven wire screen with 0.57 mm opening. Each section carried a circulating load of 28.3 tons per hour for a jig.

A continuous oxygen probe,incorporating a SIRO2 solid electrolyte oxygen sensor which measured the oxygen potential of a small volume of gas enclosed above the melt's surface,was constructed and tested. The oxygen potential of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron in the temperature range 1250 to 1300¦C were measured continuously for tests of up to 40 hours duration. Results were in agreement with those of previous workers using gas equilibration techniques. Tests on non- iron buffered slags proved unsuccessful due to corrosion of the probe's component in contact with the slag and an alternative material is Required.
