The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

Education and Training for the minerals industry has been identified as one of the key priorities by the AusIMM and many closely related groups. The AusIMM Education Taskforce has been engaged, through a visioning exercise, in evaluating what minerals education and training should look like by 2025. A common recurring theme is that for minerals education and training to be efficient and effective into the future, it needs to be comprehensive and inclusive. Some previous attempts to achieve efficiency and effectiveness have had limited success, mainly due to approaching the issues involved from a narrow, singular perspective. This paper outlines that the achievement of the desired outcome may require an approach that parallels the same techniques that are used for multi-dimensional mine planning, treating tertiary minerals education and training in a similar way to the planning involved for a complex orebody. Just as efficient and effective mine planning requires engagement and understanding of many factors, so too does engagement with tertiary minerals education and training. The major factors that need to be considered are outlined in the paper, including: levels of tertiary education and training; Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Levels 1 to 13: systems of minerals education and training, such as higher education, (mainly universities), industry/professional associations and licencing requirements, vocational education, (mainly TAFE) and workplace programs; types of minerals or mining methods involved; volume of delivery; stage in the flow sheet, (geology, mining, beneficiation, extraction, refining). For comprehensive mine planning there is the need to develop links or roadways and openings between different levels of a mine. Similarly, to achieve a comprehensive tertiary minerals education and training model, there is a need to develop pathways, recognition and credit transfer between the various levels and components of minerals tertiary education and training.

As part of a comprehensive project to develop a remote sensing tool for evaluating the mechanical properties of rocks, one must obtain a rapid indication of these properties using conventional field methods. A common method for evaluating the mechanical properties of rocks in the field is to use a Schmidt hammer, a portable device that measures the rebound (R) of a spring-loaded mass impacting against the rock surface. Since the 1960s many studies have been made to find empirical correlations between the R value measured by the Schmidt hammer and mechanical and physical properties such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, density, and porosity. Despite the existing correlations in the literature, this work is required to establish detailed empirical relationships for the carbonate rock units in Israel. To do so, 150 rock samples were collected from 38 different outcrops of carbonate rock units. In each outcrop, 20 impacts were made using a Schmidt hammer at different but adjacent points. The impacts were done horizontally perpendicular to the vertical rock walls. In the laboratory, we measured the density, effective porosity, water absorption, UCS, and elastic modulus. The rock samples we selected contained a wide range of UCS: from 7 to 270 MPa. Our empirical correlations indicate an exponential relationship between R and UCS and the elastic modulus, and linear relationships between R and density, porosity, and water absorbance. The most reliable index is the average of the five maximum impacts out of the 20 made in each rock outcrop. The correlation equations obtained from this work will make it possible to effectively evaluate the mechanical properties of the intact rock in the field, thereby aiding development of advanced tools for rock mass characterisation by means of remote sensing.

Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre- Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth.The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than 2 micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. Fluid inclusions within quartz accompanying several stages of mineralization at Hillgrove are de cri bed. Pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold mineralization shows uncorrected filling temperatures of between 195°C and 250°C. Later stibnite-antimonide-siderite and stibnite-calcite mineralization has filling temperatures between 100°C and 195°C and a bimodal distribution of temperature peaking at 175°C and 145°C, possibly correlated with the two stages of mineral deposition. Secondary included fluids within an earlier generation of deformed quartz veins are derived from hydrothermal fluids contemporary with the main-stage mineralizing fluids described above. Primary inclusions within latestage, cross-cutting quartz-chlorite-calcite veins show these veins to be unrelated to the mineralization.A correlation between filling temperatures and salinities indicates that mineralization accompanied the mixing of a hot, partly saline, fluid (at 5 per cent equivalent NaCI) with cooler, less-saline meteoric or connate water. Over a vertical distance of 200 m, equivalent mineral assemblages were deposited over the same temperature range. Studies on single crystals suggest rapid deposition with fluid temperature dropping 45°C during their growth. Ore mineragraphy and the fluid inclusion data suggest that the metals were transported by sulphur-poor, relatively low-temperature, low-salinity solutions, possibly as carbonate complexe , and that a vertical zonation of the W-Sb-Au mineralization is compatible with the mixing of this hydrothermal fluid with cooler groundwater. Regional metallogenic and geological considerations suggest that ore metals are derived from the remobilization of deep-seated stratabound deposits or from metamorphic fluids expelled from deepseated volcanoclastic sediments.

Geostatistical simulation techniques are used to quantify uncertainty of spatial attributes of interest describing mineral deposits, petroleum reservoirs, hydrogeological horizons, environmental contaminants and so on. The majority of existing methods consider second-order spatial statistics and Gaussian processes, while the more advanced multiple point-based simulation approaches are algorithmic and do not consistently account for the high-order spatial relations in data. Recently, simulation techniques for complex and non-Gaussian spatially distributed variables have been developed, based on high-order spatial cumulants, and make no assumptions on data distribution or require data transformations. In this paper, the previous developments are extended and a new approach for the joint simulation of multiple correlated variables using high-order spatial statistics is proposed. The technique is based on a new algorithm for the decorrelation of correlated variables into factors, using the so-termed diagonal domination condition of high-order cumulants. The decorrelated factors are then simulated using high-order simulation and back-transformed into the initial correlated variables. The decorrelation using diagonal domination of high-order statistics is tested with a data set from a multielement iron ore deposit, and then a fully known two-dimensional data set with two correlated variables is used to demonstrate the practical intricacies of the proposed method.CITATION:Minniakhmetov, I and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Metallic sulfide minerals present in most gold ores, Morila gold ore included, often decompose under typical gold leaching conditions. The reactions and their products consume oxygen and sodium cyanide, consequently competing for oxygen and cyanide used in gold dissolution. The resultant effect is to reduce both the kinetics of gold dissolution and overall extraction efficiencies. The present paper discusses results obtained from plant data analysis and laboratory work investigating the problem of higher than expected consumption of sodium cyanide at Morila Mine Gold Plant. Cyanide consumption at the Morila Mine Gold Plant had been consistently running at 46 per cent higher than the expected value without any corresponding increase in gold recovery. In fact, plant data analysis showed an inverse relationship between cyanide consumption and grind, as well as cyanide consumption and gold recovery. Experimental and plant data analysis indicated that better control of the [CN-]/[O2] ratio is necessary for the efficient use of reagents and achievement of higher gold recoveries. Careful control of this ratio at a minimum of eight enabled the reduction of sodium cyanide consumption by 200 g/t, that is, from 650 g/t to 450 g/t. Coupling these experimental conditions with the addition of lead nitrate at 100 g/t improved the overall gold recovery to 93 per cent compared to the average plant recovery of 90.2 per cent over a six-month period. This improvement was also reflected in the leaching kinetics where 70 per cent gold extraction was achieved after four hours, as compared to 59 per cent in the absence of lead nitrate addition. Also of great importance is the fact that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and oxygen gave inferior performance relative to either of the two reagents used separately. This scenario presents an opportunity for excluding hydrogen peroxide, an expensive reagent, and focusing on improving the oxygen addition system to boost dissolved oxygen concentration in the plant.

ABSTRACT' The high gas emissions associated with coal extraction at some-Australian collieries have provided a need to investigate the methods used to predict these gas levels and the vent- ilation requirements for gas dilution. It is generally accepted that the introduction of longwall extraction in particular is associated with complex ventilation planning problems. These problems are made much more severe when the colliery introducing longwalls is already facing high gas emissions even during the development stages. A forecast of likely gas emissions during the longwall mining process indicated possible ventilation problems in maintaining the necessary ventilation levels to satisfy the statutory gas limitations for various production rates. Although there are sound principles used in world recognised methods of gas emission prediction a new approach developed from the findings of the Barbara Experimental Mine in Poland appears most suitable for Australian conditions. The presence of clays in channel iron deposits (CID) within the Pilbara region of Western Australia causes problems in the classification and subsequent processing of the iron ore. In particular, the presence of clay adversely affects the processing and ore metallurgical properties by increasing the amount of Si and Al. Iron ore companies are seeking new methods to quickly and objectively detect the type and amount of clay in these deposits. Traditional methods of clay quantification such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis are time consuming and expensive. Reliance on bulk chemical techniques (eg X-ray fluorescence, (XRF)) to derive normative mineral abundances can give misleading results. For example, the replacement of Fe by Al in the structure of the iron oxide minerals, goethite and haematite, which dominate in CIDs, can be significant. Silicon can also occur in association with these Fe minerals. If not accounted for, chemical techniques may overestimate the normative abundance of clays. In comparison, reflectance spectroscopy in the visible-to-near infrared (VNIR) and short wave infrared (SWIR) wavelength range (eg 400 - 2500 nm) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) (6000 - 900 cm-1) analysis are non-destructive techniques that can provide rapid and objective mineralogical information. Both techniques are particularly suited to Al-, Fe- and Mg-OH bearing minerals such as clays. Kaolinite and, to a lesser extent, montmorillonite are the most common clay contaminants that occur in the Pilbara CIDs. Previous applications of VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy have demonstrated the potential of these methods in quantifying the clay mineralogy of CID ore. In this study, variations in the depth of diagnostic spectral adsorption features in the SWIR wavelength range of kaolinite and montmorillonite in standardised mixtures, with known proportions of clay, were well correlated to the abundance of kaolinite and montmorillonite, and to the clay alumina content (ie per cent Al2O3 û clay).

The production of synthetic crude oil requires a suitable coal or a coal extract modified by hydrogenation for pyrolysis. Existing classifications are broadly based on historical and current needs. One, Seyler's, is based on a visual display which can be used to present petrographic bounds. The analysis of the coal extracts from solvent hydrogen-donor testing allows an experimental limit to be described and a plant limit to be indicated. Australian black coals are discussed within these petrographic and plant bounds and their limitations as a feed for the production of synthetic crude presented. Potential uses for the aromatic liquid products are suggested. The application of the diagram as a screening procedure for sub-hydrous coals is described.

Felspar occurs in association with quartz in the Broken Hill lode pegmatites and is brilliant green, greenish white, and white in colour. The pegmatites occur mainly in the walls in sporadic patches, parallel to the general dip of the ore deposit. The occurrences are of no economic value.Deposits of marketable felspar occur in pegmatite in a number of localities around Broken Hill, New South Wales.The majority of these are in the form of an irregular outcrop, usually of tapering length and depth. The maximum depth of any deposit yet worked in the district is about 40 ft. The felspar is occasionally contaminated by "blows" of quartz, mica and beryl, but the two latter are profitably marketable when separated.Felspars vary in colour from pink, through grey to snow white, and the colour is not indicative of the mineral content. The largest deposit at present being worked is the Egebeck quarry, about 14 miles south of Cockburn. It is a prominent outcrop, roughly circular and about 150 ft. in diameter, covered by one to three feet of overburden.The felspar is mainly massive, but contains some cleavage planes at approximately 90°. Intrusions of quartz and mica occur in patches, but the deposit appears likely to improve in size, regularity and quality below the present working floor.COMMERCIAL USES.Commercial felspars are mainly used in the ceramic industry, for which a high-grade potash felspar is required.The dental industry requires limited amounts of soda felspar with a very low Fe20s content. The CSIRO has pioneered the development and use of certain classes of magnetic resonance (MR) for mining applications. The MR technique is a radio frequency-based spectroscopy that provides highly quantitative measurement of selected ore minerals. MR has many inherent advantages for bulk sensing in mining applications, including deep sensing penetration into most bulk ores with the use of non-contact sensors that are robust and tolerant of demanding mine conditions. The highly discriminating nature of the technique also provides the very desirable attribute of robust and simple calibration, that can often be performed prior to sensor installation. Rapid sensing (within seconds) at very low grade (few hundred ppm Cu) has been demonstrated, as well as sensing at high tonnage rate. Besides sorting applications, MR may also be applied to preconcentration applications involving very large volume sensing including: (i) haul truck sensing using portal arrangements, where truck destination assignment may be dynamically determined based on the truck grade, (ii) in-pit gantries used for loading trucks that may similarly be equipped with sensors for truck assignment and (iii) deep mine bench sensing, recently progressed through a CRC ORE project, where local bench grade is determined at the few-metre lateral scale and at depth prior to blasting, to aid selective blasting and ore extraction. MR sensor prototypes have been developed for each of these applications and have been tested in laboratory or limited field conditions. To inform the value proposition for truck or bench sensing, initial analysis of truck assignment improvement based on an analysis of in-situ mine bench grade has been performed for a porphyry style deposit. The prototype sensors, preliminary results and future technology development and objectives will be described.

The swelling process is an impor- tant problem causing damages to the structures in or on swelling rocks, both during construction and operating life. To understand swelling problem, a number of testing methods have been developed by many researchers. In these studies, the swelling parameters, in most cases, are derived from oedometer tests. The swelling parameters determined from oedometer type tests represent one-dimensional behaviour (one-dimensional swelling law) therefore, it is quite difficult to extrapolate the oedometer type test results to the three-dimensional in-situ conditions. To overcome these problems, a three-dimensional approach is suggested for clay bearing rocks. Results of triaxial swelling tests conducted on marl from Dodurga Lignite Coal Mine are presented. Triaxial swelling characteristics of the marl are presented and design approach for tunnels is described.

This paper summarises the performance of the gold exploration industry in the Western World since 1970, with particular emphasis on the period 1985 - 2003. It identifies the number and size of major (ie >1 million ounce) primary gold discoveries made over this period by location and type of company. Estimates are also made of the likely contribution from smaller discoveries down to 0.1 million ounces. It also assesses the overall trend in the percentage of grassroot discoveries that are converted into mines, and the time taken to get them into production. By comparing the discovery data against total exploration expenditures it is possible to determine the average unit cost of finding a major gold deposit. It is significant to note that the average unit cost per discovery and per ounce of resource has tripled over the last 30 years. An attempt is made to determine the overall economic value generated by the industry. This is based on a detailed analysis of the rates of return and the Net Present Values (NPVs) of 109 major gold projects. After including an adjustment for discoveries not modelled, the NPVs are compared against the total amount of money spent on exploration to determine the value-to-cost ratio for the industry. Based on historical spot gold prices and tax rules, it is found that the return on investment for gold exploration in the Western World over the period 1985 - 2003 was around five per cent real after-tax. The returns achieved in the US and Australia was significantly higher than that for Canada. The returns also appear to have declined in recent years. With regard to the relative performance of junior versus major companies, the paper estimates that the junior sector accounted for 30 - 40 per cent of the total exploration expenditure, and were was associated with 34 per cent of the total number of major deposits, 27 per cent of the contained ounces and 25 per cent of the economic value found.

The modern mechanical excavation machines have enough power for cutting hard rock. The ‘bottle neck’ which limits the use of machines for hard rock excavation is ‘cutting tool’. To cut hard and abrasive rock, CSIRO has been developing Super Material Abrasive Resistant Tools (SMART*CUT). SMART*CUT technology replaces the tungsten carbide (WC) tip of conventional pick with thermally stable diamond composite (TSDC) and attaches the TSDC tip to steel tool body with CSIRO worldwide patented bonding technology. This paper introduces the key features of SMART*CUT, compares its performance with conventional WC tipped tools, discusses the challenges faced by SMART*CUT and the further developments needed for successful application of SMART*CUT to mining industries.

Perseverance Mine is a part of Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO), a fully owned division of Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The town of Leinster is located 370 kilometres north west of Kalgoorlie. LNO operates an underground gold mine and mill at Agnew, 30 kilometres west of the town in addition to two nickel mines and a mill 15 kilometres east of Leinster. Both the Perseverance and Rocky's Reward nickel orebodies are mined by open pit and underground methods.The Perseverance orebody was discovered in the early-1970s. Decline development commenced in 1977 and the first ore was milled in 1978. The shaft sink started in 1979. The shaft was comissioned in 1983, four years after sinking commenced. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in 1986 and purchased in January 1989 by WMC.
