This paper briefly outlines the develop ment of the froth flotation plant at Coal Cliff Colliery. The plant was superimposed onto the original flow sheet in which fines were merely thickened and filtered. Test work leading up to the installation is described and the final layout is discussed. Details of the concentrate and tailings systems are given. Preliminary results of a further extension involving the use of a Davcra flotation machine are also given.

Safety legislation has a long history and widespread application, but how can one test its effectiveness? One way is to examine safety statistics. Another way is to compare the legislation with principles of good safety practice. Mine safety legislation contains many features that are widely accepted, and these should be examined critically to determine their importance. Dispersed gem corundum is mined from placers, commonly from basalt fields, as occurs along eastern Australian and Asian continental margins. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis (LA-ICP-MS) of Australian corundum allows genetic distinctions among these suites and gives clues to their primary lithospheric sources prior to basaltic delivery. Bimodal corundum suites at Barrington Tops, Cudgegong-Gulgong-Macquarie River and Yarrowitch, New South Wales (NSW), include lower Ga, higher Mg æmetamorphicÆ and higher Ga, lower Mg æmagmaticÆ groups. The Barrington Tops æmetamorphicÆ corundum is more Fe-rich (av 4500 - 7100 ppm) than Cudgegong- Macquarie River equivalents (av Fe 1800 - 2100 ppm). Yarrowitch corundum is relatively low in Fe, Ti and Cr. Along with other eastern Australian data (north-east Tasmania; New England, NSW) and from gem fields elsewhere, the combined trace element and O isotope data, reveal considerable geographic and genetic variations within the corundum suites. A few corundum groups contain noticeable Be, Sn, Ta, Nb, a particular genetic message that also precludes easy distinction of treated corundum in the gem trade. Expanding geochemical, inclusion and geochronological data on gem corundum hold promise for characterising derivative gem corundum on both geographic and genetic features.

After 15 years of operation Australian Mineral Foundation is at the cross-roads: Affected significantly in its last 21 years by Australian dollar devaluation, lower mineral industry activity and severe cut backs in the petroleum industry due to the low oil price, a re-evaluation of its goals and industry support is urgently needed. Industry support, strong at the start, has not kept pace with inflation and expectations of a totally self supporting organisation have proved impossible to sustain. Nevertheless, with a change in emphasis in education programmes, continued creative development of information services and more particularly greater awareness by industry of the services available and hence greater use of the services, industry support is expected to increase. Indeed, industry, it is believed, will accept its responsibility.

Mr. Gillie and Mr. Harris have given us a wealth of information and food for thought on the vital subject of information and food fo rthought on the vital subject of reducing costs and mention considerable saving in some of the larger items. There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. Purification of GAsgruvan Limestone is carried out by anionic, cationic and cationic followed by anionic flotations in order to obtain a calcite concentrate that is acceptable to the paper industry. The results indicate that such a concentrate could be achieved by first carrying out the separation of siliceous gangue minerals by cationic flotation followed by the separation of carbonate during the anionic flotation. Stearylamine acetate (Flotigam SA) and a modified fatty acid (OMC 357) are found to be selective during cationic and anionic flotation, respectively. A final product containing 99.25 per cent calcite with a recovery of around 80 per cent is obtained. It is hoped that these results could be further improved by the follow-up process variable studies, in particular, the effect of reagent dosages and conditioning time at each stage of cationic and anionic flotation steps.

The Porgera Gold Mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, has produced over 5 million ounces of Au, since its opening in late 1990. The deposit is located within Upper Cretaceous Papuan Platform sediments approximately 25 km south of the Lagaip Fault, and is spatially and temporally associated with the 6 Ma alkaline Porgera Intrusive Complex.

The overall mineral assemblage of the Broken Hill orebody is similar to that of a skarn. However unlike the classical skarns it does not represent contact metamorphism of pre-existing limestone beds. It is a stratiform accumulation of exhalative-sedimentary silica, sulphides, (Ca, Fe, Mn) silicates and carbonates, fluoride and phosphate that has later undergone regional metamorphism. The resulting development of coarse-grained quartz, sphalerite, galena, rhodonite, bustamite, mixed carbonates, fluorite, apatite and many minor phases has produced a sulphide-rich skarn- like mass that like many others of its kind, might best be referred to as a stratiform skarn. Recent investigations of occurrences of this type are showing that the incidence of concentrations of particular metamorphic minerals in and adjacent to such orebodies are closely related to bedding and to former sedimentary facies patterns. From this it appears that the mineral assemblages may be used to deduce not only the nature of the materials laid down in the beds, but also the physico-chemical conditions under which sedimentation took place. Several stratiform deposits, including Broken Hill, are used as examples to show that variations in these conditions may have a profound influence on the subsequent response of the rock to regional metamorphism and hence on the mineral assemblages that finally develop.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has recently commercialised a variety of new products for the mining industry through its commercial division (JKTech). Although the products cover a wide variety of niche applications, a common thread runs through the Research, Development and Commercialisation (RD and C) process: they have emerged from industry sponsored projects. The development history of JigScan (a control system for the mineral-processing jig) is a good example of how this RD and C process works in practice. It involves building mutually beneficial partnerships between the JKMRC and the mining industry through several incremental projects with one or more industry sponsors. All research projects have objectives to demonstrate but these projects also feature a degree of product development to actively encourage and support the longer-term vision for the mature commercial technology. The process to develop JigScan as a commercial product worked because each incremental project recovered costs, provided an immediate benefit for the sponsor and contributed to the longer-term development objectives of the JKMRC. Integrating development with research need not greatly increase the cost of research objectives generally provides a more robust research outcome for the sponsor and greatly reduces the overall development risk. Successful projects often feature industry mentors actively participating in the RD and C process. Additional funding from government appears to be easier to obtain when such close partnerships with industry are apparent. Finally, the business structure of the JKMRC within the University of Queensland ensures that commercial outcomes, developed within the contractual arrangements of the underlying RD and C projects, are used to benefit and support further RD and C with the mining industry. This paper tells the story of the development and commercialisation of JigScan, and draws conclusions about this kind of RD and C model.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

Mill scale, which contains a high proportion of magnetite and wustite, was added to the feed to the Whyalla grate kiln pellet plant during the production of acid pellets for domestic consumption. Its addition resulted in increased production -rates together with reduced consumptions of bentonite, fireclay and fuel. Mill scale was particularly beneficial when treating feed containing difficult to process, earthy, high ignition loss iron ores. Test work in the laboratory and subsequent plant experience showed that the magnetite and wustite oxidised in the drying and preheat sections of the travelling grate. The additional heat reduced gas flows through the grate kiln system, aided the drying of green balls containing earthy ores and increased the preheat strength of the balls. These advantages were offset to some extent by higher power consumptions to grind the harder mill scale and process difficulties caused by the contamination of mill scale with oil and coke.

In July 1997 Macraes Mining Company Limited deferred a 9 Mtpa expansion of the Macraes Gold Project because of the uncertainty of the future gold price and its impact on equity markets.  Additionally delays in the resource consenting process led to further uncertainty.   It has subsequently announced that a study has been commissioned to recommend a staged approach to development of its New Zealand business. The best economic development path will be determined to maximise returns to shareholders.

The design, construction and operation of a 500,000 tonne per year Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) plant at Kambalda embracing the period from 1980 to 1982 has been previously discussed (Sceresini, 1982).Since that time the annual throughput rate has increased to 780,000 tpy.This paper discusses the changes and improve-ment made to allow this increased production to occur with minimal capital expenditure.

All minerals contain radioactive elements, from the uranium ores of the Gabon, which contained sufficient uranium to initiate a natural nuclear reactor, to the very low levels of some recent evaporites. The commonly occurring heavy minerals such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon are no exception to this and contain varying qualities of radionuclides, depending on the source. With recent changes in legislation many natural minerals may become officially classed as radioactive. Such moves can inhibit the sales and exploration of many minerals in the heavy minerals suite. The many negative perceptions associated with the word radioactivity can produce an over cautious reaction from regulators and users. This paper presents a method of managing the radioactivity issues associated with minerals such that the safety aspects of workers and public are not compromised, whilst allowing the commercial use of such minerals to continue in a sensible manner. The paper focuses mainly on the mineral zircon and its uses. However the legislation changes particularly in Europe and the USA have the potential to affect all minerals imported into or produced in those countries. The model developed for addressing the issues of zircon radioactivity may be readily applied to other minerals since legislation governing such matters is not mineral specific. There is a strong need for education of both regulators and users of minerals. Regulators are usually not aware of the specific properties or uses of individual minerals. Similarly mineral users are not aware of the radioactive nature of their materials or how to manage this property. The paper concludes by recommending strong cooperative action by both producers and users of minerals to protect the future of their industry.

The potential for extracting gravel materials from active floodplain and channel areas has been investigated for three West Coast rivers û the Grey, Inangahua and Whataroa. Studies have focused primarily on resource availability and replenishment, but there are clearly also environmental management issues associated with such a proposal. The potential uses for of extracted materials include roading and concrete aggregates, as well as railway ballast, whilst a major benefit would be in assisting with flood control and channel maintenance in a naturally aggrading system. Sediment movement in the rivers has been examined at three scales; long-term (>100 years), medium-term (10 - 100 years) and short-term (<10 years). Long-term sediment movement is based on geological and geomorphological information, such as cyclic fan development and down-cutting in the Whataroa River where sediment input appears to be largely controlled by Alpine Fault rupture events. Medium-term assessment relied on air-photo interpretations over a period of about 50 years, with the mapping of channel changes and bank migration. Short term changes were evaluated from gauging records and other hydrological data, and took account of the development of an armour layer in these gravel-bed river systems. It was concluded that sediment in the lower reaches of each river was suitable for most aggregate uses, although input of more weathered Greenland Group materials in the upper reaches (eg of the Mawhera-iti or Little Grey) resulted in product that was not satisfactory for sealing chip or railway ballast. Of greater importance was the fact that short-term studies showed that a minimum threshold of flow was required for gravel entrainment, and that significant sediment movement only occurred above the one-year return period flood. Ongoing monitoring of river profiles, with accompanying flow gauging, would clearly be necessary were a substantial increase in river bed extraction to be permitted by The West Coast Regional Council.
