The Similkameen Division of Newmont Mines Limited operates a low-grade open-pit copper mine in southern British Columbia. The copper mineralization is extremely erratic.As a result, over seven years of operation, ore control methods have evolved from standard flagging based on blast-hole assays, through an in-pit grab sampling system, to the present method of mining to computer-determined ore-waste boundaries based on geostatistics. These improved ore control methods have resulted in a gain of at least 25% on ore tonnage miffed, at the same grade as obtained using earlier techniques. At the same time, geostatistical ore reserve estimates are now within 7% of milled ore tonnage and grade on a yearly basis, whereas the original polygon ore reserves under-estimated mineable ore tonnage by 15% to 45% and over-estimated grade by about 20%. The author discusses why traditional ore estimation methods give poor results in erratically mineralized orebodies and describes the geostatistical approach to the problem.

Since the early 1980s, surface hard-rock mining companies have searched for a blast movement model to enable grade control optimization efforts. Significant time and money were spent attempting to create blast simulations to aid post-blast grade control. Despite nearly 40 years of effort, practical blast movement models remained elusive until computing power reached levels that make real-time simulation possible. From the mid-1990s, mines have been creating in-situ grade control polygons and translating the polygon nodes horizontally to account for blast movement. In many cases, objects are placed in the blast volume and located post-blast to provide local vectors for these node translations. This method was always a compromise between practicality (2D) and reality (3D), but it was the only viable solution that matched the needs of operations. This study considers 21 blasts and evaluates the incremental value achieved by new processes unlocked through 3D modelling, while investigating challenges, limitations, and opportunities for each method.

In this investigation, the aging effect on creep behavior of A12024-10%SiC composite fabricated by powder metallurgy was studied. P/M bars were manufactured by hot powder extrusion method at 450°C with a ratio of 16 to 1. Creep specimens were over-aged at 187 ºC for 43 h. It was found that almost full density composite with relatively homogenous distribution of reinforcing particles throughout the aluminum alloy matrix could be attained by direct powder extrusion process. Creep tests were conducted at temperatures from 275 to 325°C under stresses from 25 to 60 MPa. The analysis of the creep mechanism determined that dislocation glide was the predominant mechanism of plastic deformation. The activation energy of the creep process was found to be higher than that of lattice self-diffusion in pure aluminum.

This paper deals with materials of construction and problems encountered and overcome in leaching and filtration of oxidized sulphuric acid slurry in the Port Radium mill after eight years of operation. The slurry is characterized by a high calcium sulphate content as well as a high chloride level under oxidized conditions, both of which affected initial design and subsequent changes. Leach agitation tanks are of wood with a mild steel superstructure and stainless steel agitator and moving parts below solution level. Electro-polished 316 stainless steel cooling coils are used for temperature control of the slurry. The string filters are of the Oliver type with wood decking. Extensive use is made of wood, Linatex lined mild steel and stainless steel for the slurry handling. "This paper illustrates the different ways grade-tonnage curves can be generated f or a mineral deposit. It emphasizes systematic discrepancies between reality, estimates and actual production according to different estimation methods and grade control programs. It does not offer a universal solution to the prediction of grade-tonnage curves. Hopefully, it will inspire caution to mineral economists who use estimated grade and tonnage data in the establishment of an optimum cut-off grade for a mining operation.IntroductionThe value of a mineral development venture often depends on a grade-tonnage curve. Statistics can help. The idea is to divide mentally the orebody into small blocks called selective mining units or SMUs. A SMU is an idealized version of the quantity of rock the grade of which will be tested against the cut-off at the time of mining. It could be as small as a truck load or a shovel load in very selective operations like some uranium mines where radiometric probing of each truck or car is performed. More typically, in an open pit operation, it will be the smallest zone flagged as ore from blast hole data, e.g. a 5 m by 5 m by 10m block, if blast holes are on a 5 m grid and bench height is 10m. Having defined the SMUs, the grade-tonnage curve determination amounts to evaluating the grade distribution of all the SMUs that can be mined in the depo sit. If we know this distribution we simply apply the cut-off to it and we get the number of SMUs above the cut-off (i.e. ore tonnage) and their average grade. .Assessment of the grade distribution of SMUs from exploration drill hole data is not an easy exercise and much has been published on the subject (David, 1972; Marechal , 1972; Huijbregts, 1975; Marechal, 1975; Guibal and Touffait, 1982). In this paper, we use a gold mine example to illustrate the influence of SMU size on the results. With the same example we also show that ""common-sense"" methods of grade-tonnage curve determination can sometimes be misleading."

What are the elements that should be taken into consideration in the design and implementation of modern automation systems in a control room? Both industry and international standards are now demanding that Human Factors be considered as part of the design of control rooms to maximize efficiency and minimize the potential of human error which can lead to downtime and a loss of profit as a result of interruptions in production. As the current workforce ages and the younger generation matures, this is also becoming a key element when planning a control room. New standards are helping to address some of these challenges that are facing the mining industry today. With an increased focus on the operator, an intelligent and ergonomic workspace can both mitigate risk and optimize production. Optimization is money. We will examine how to analyze and implement innovative control room planning to maximize mineral processing production and minimize risks that can impact overall production and profit.INTRODUCTIONIn this day and age, optimization of production in an industrial environment is becoming more and more of a challenge. With ever changing technology as well as other external factors, this can be especially daunting. There are several key elements that may not be immediately obvious when planning a control room design or renovation, most notably the role of the human in this environment. Fatigue, stress, distraction, reaction times and situational awareness are all critical in a 24/7 environment. With the growing need to include human factors when considering and designing an optimal work and production environment, it is becoming even more important to design a control room that can address as many of today’s challenges as possible.The standard definition of the word “optimization” is “an act, process or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional or effective as possible.” (www.merriam-webster.com). If we apply this to business, what it really means is finding the most cost effective way to achieve the highest level of performance while considering constraints, both external and internal, by maximizing the desired factors and minimizing undesired ones. Sometimes, however, we can get caught up in the day to day processes, without taking a moment to step back and objectively review what it is we need to achieve, and more importantly, the steps that can facilitate our success."

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are said to be a good option in new grinding circuits. Due to their low energy consumption compared to other grinding systems such as SAG milling, there is a strong incentive to check their behaviour for certain ore types. With rising energy prices the operation will become even more beneficial in future. As published in the past, the HPGR is claimed to increase the liberation of the valuable mineral component within an ore. An investigation at the research centre of Polysius was conducted to substantiate the liberation behaviour in finish grinding operations. A pilot scale HPGR test unit (POLYCOM MAGRO) with a roll diameter of 950 mm and processing capacity of 80 t/h was used. Grinding tests were completed with a screen and a two stage drying air separation process (SEPOL). Analysis included standard screen analysis, fractional XRF and modern MLA technology. A technique was developed to oppose the amount of produced slimes (resuming bad flotation) against the positive effect of producing high mass fraction at flotation-easy sizes. The paper shows how effective the use of a dry grinding separation could be in terms of production of mass of liberated metal.

At some point mining cycles will put every operator into periods of time where economic issues seem to over-ride all other concerns. This is when leadership is most needed.

During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

"Existing environmental, health and safety regulations have forced pyrometallurgical facilities worldwide to drastically change some of their traditional methods of operation. In extreme cases, a number of facilities have been closed due to their inability to conform to these existing regulations. Tougher future legislation and government policy will lead to more stringent regulations and enforcement policies. The efficient control of smelter secondary emissions will, therefore, become critical to successful smelter operation.Much attention has been paid to the smelter primary process off-gas systems, including the development of new process designs to reduce the number of uncontrolled transfer operations. However, even the most modem smelter design requires control of its secondary contaminant sources, which mayor may not be directly related to the process operation.This paper discusses some of the potential secondary emissions encountered in many of the present process technologies. A few of the emission sources presented are only periodic in nature, such as those caused by maintenance procedures, but which have the capability of forcing smelter shut-down because of their direct impact on worker health and safety. The paper deals with a variety of topics relating to the efficient control, maintenance and monitoring of secondary emissions in copper, nickel, aluminum, magnesium and lead smelters, as well as in iron foundries and steel making facilities. Examples of the typical problems encountered in each of the above process operations are presented, including fume control at furnace tapping and slagging locations, metal transfer stations, tapping launders, and ladle transfer operations. The parameters for the most efficient design of fume capture systems, problems encountered with the handling and clean-up of certain collected emissions, and examples of successful solutions in particular operations are discussed."

Introduction This paper is an amplification of the paper presented by the writer at the last (1930) Annual Meeting of the Institute (1), and is somewhat in the nature of a progress report upon the introduction of pyrite into the field of Canadian consumption. The burner installed at the plant of the Canada Power & Paper Corporation, St. Maurice division, has been slightly changed in dimensions and has been put into continuous operation during the past year. As predicted, it has been possible to somewhat increase the steam consumption and at the same time decrease the amount of sulphur remaining in the calcine. The grade of the sulphur-dioxide gas produced has been maintained very steadily at 12 per cent, and sufficient experience has been obtained to determine the renewal cost of continuous operation. The object of this paper now is to encourage the development of pyrite, particularly by-product flotation pyrite, as it is shown that there is a very definite field in Canada for this material and that all the previous objections to the use of pyrite have been overcome, and that the use of the material in practice in paper mills has been developed to such a point that the operation of manufacturing the sulphite cooking-liquor is as simple as, or simpler than, the present style of operation with the use of sulphur.

A GREAT deal of time and energy is now being devoted to the study of post-war reconstruction and rehabilitation, in spite of the fact that as yet we have not won the war in which we are presently engaged. If you feel that the study of post-war problems takes our thought away from the problem immediately before us, you may well query, "Well! What has all that to do with winning the war, our most urgent problem today?" The answer has been given by Principal James of McGill University, Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Reconstruction: "Reconstruction is something which must be thought of in advance, partly for the purpose of recognizing exactly the influence of war-time activities, controls, and regulations on the post-war Canadian scene. Many people are acutely interested in this great problem. It is not that they are not interested in the war itself, or epochal events that are taking place from day to day. They have a vision of that future which they hope will be Canada's, and this vision inspires them to even greater efforts at the present time". The trend of events would indicate that changes, economic and industrial, after this war will be greatly out of line with those that followed previous wars in history, for the present struggle has involved every nation in the world. In the peace that will come, every engineer will have a task in bringing the most desirable order out of the most distressing chaos. We certainly are living in a changing world; we are witnessing geo-graphical and economic readjustments that no other generation in world's history has ever witnessed. And there is an opinion gaining strength in our Dominion, as in other lands, that after this war we shall live in a world in which our process of thinking and our very way of life will have to undergo drastic changes to cope with the new order of things. Sadly our world of today has had to revise the sublime vision that nation shall not lift up sword against nation, while salvage operations continue to beat ploughshares into tanks and the peaceful pruning-hook into a weapon for the deviltry of the commando.

"Laboratory batch flotation tests were performed on a sample of bulk slow cooled converter matte (Cu:Ni = I) to optimize the time in each of the separation stages. Numerical simulations were carried out to estimate a continuous circuit material balance for the conditions selected. An experimental simulation of a continuous circuit (locked cycle test) readily came to steady state and there was reasonable agreement between the numerical and experimental results. The use of nitrogen as the flotation gas and the addition of collector to the grinding mill minimized the oxidation of chalcocite, which has previously resulted in increasing circulating loads, and led to a stable circuit with very low weights in the recycle streams.IntroductionINCO Limited developed a flotation process for separating the components of copper-nickel matte [Sproule, Harcourt and Rose 1945; Sproule, Harcourt and Renzoni 1960] in 1945 to replace the Orford process and continues to use the flotation process in almost the original mode to this day. Initially the matte processed was the result of smelting a nickel concentrate that analyzed about 12% nickel and 2% copper and all of the recycle material that was generated in the smelting process. The matte generated analyzed about 25% copper and 53% nickel, roughly 2: 1 nickel to copper. This matte was blown in Pierce-Smith converters to be sulfur deficient in order to produce a metallic phase that collected the precious metals contained in the smelter feed [Wilson and Stratton-Crawley 1991]. This process continued with little change until 1994 when the separation of chalcopyrite from pentlandite in the Copper Cliff mill was discontinued after 63 years of operation. As a consequence of the elimination of the primary separation of chalcopyrite from pentlandite in the milling process a bulk concentrate was produced for smelting. Bulk concentrate smelting came into practice in 1994 as part of the initiative to meet government legislation that restricted the emission of sulfur dioxide to the atmosphere. Previously, the copper concentrate was smelted in an INCO oxygen flash furnace which resulted in the capture of a high strength sulfur dioxide stream from which liquid sulfur dioxide was produced. Nickel concentrate was smelted in reverberatory furnaces that produced low strength sulfur dioxide gases which were difficult to treat. The action taken by INCO to meet the environmental constraints was to smelt a bulk concentrate in oxygen flash furnaces which would produce gases suitable for the production of liquid sulfur dioxide and another stream that was high enough in sulfur dioxide to be readily converted to sulfuric acid [Bell et al 1990]. The end result of this decision was that all the copper-nickel separation would be done in the matte separation plant."

"The mining industry is facing serious long- and short-term challenges relating to uncertain commodity prices, environmental pressures, and margin compression due to rising energy costs. Energy issues, formerly treated as an operating cost, are changing as executives search for longer term solutions to deal with uncertain fossil fuel prices and greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, mining executives are increasingly willing to consider introducing a proportion of renewable energy (RE) systems into the mine energy mix. This paper examines how RE can be successfully integrated at mine sites, as well as some of the benefits and barriers to their wider adoption.RÉSUMÉ L’industrie minière fait face à de sérieux défis, à long et à court terme, en raison de l’incertitude des prix des matières premières, des pressions environnementales et des compressions de la marge bénéficiaire dues à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie. "Barite is used extensively by the oil and gas well-drilling industry as a weighting agent. It is particularly well suited for drilling mud because of its qualities; it is non-abrasive, heavy, virtually inert chemically, easy to handle and inexpensive compared to other available heavy materials. Increased deep well drilling in Western Canada, and especially in the Arctic regions, could dramatically affect the demand for barite through this decade. Known deposits in northeast British Columbia are possible sources of incremental barite supplies, should the situation develop.IntroductionThe purpose of this report is to examine the opportunities for expanding barite production in British Columbia. Of primary interest will be the relationship between the projected future levels of production and consumption of barite in Western Canada and the extent to which increased domestic production could replace the need for imports in filling any expected supply shortages.After a brief overview of the nature and uses of barite and some of the relevant features of the barite supply industry, the discussion will turn to the supply gap in the Canadian market and the possibilities for import substitution.OverviewBarite is an industrial mineral which is used in large quantities by the oil and gas well-drilling industry. It is often an important component of drilling mud, a fluid circulated continuously in the well during the drilling process to lubricate and cool the drilling apparatus and to contain the high oil and gas pressures found at depth. Barite (BaSO4) is particularly well suited as a weighting agent for drilling mud because it is a heavy (specific gravity to 4.5) inert mineral which is inexpensive in relation to other materials having a high specific gravity. In the on-site use of drilling mud, ground barite is combined with numerous other solid ingredients and chemicals in the form of a slurry. Other advantages of barite include cleanliness, ease in handling and its non-abrasive character (hardness of 3-3.5)."

The pressure oxidation (POX) and pyrometallurgical process comprises POX of gold containing sulfide and polymetallic lead-zinc concentrates prior to reduction smelting of POX products to generate a lead-silver-gold alloy. Refined lead and gold-silver alloys are then obtained using conventional processes. Zinc and other base metals are recovered from the POX solution. In the course of POX, zinc dissolves in the solution and lead concentrates in a solid residue in the form of sulfate compounds. Sulfur forms the major iron sulfates and jarosites. In order to dissolve sulfur and arsenic from solid residues to the solution, the slurry hot curing was carried out at the temperature of 95°C within 2 hours. After filtration of the slurry, zinc was recovered from the solution. The resulting cake was washed with water and subjected to hot alkaline treatment. After alkaline treatment, the cakes were blended with fluxes and subjected to reduction smelting to generate lead concentrate containing precious metals. This concentrate was refined to obtain refined lead and gold-silver alloy. After iron and arsenic were removed from POX solutions using sodium carbonate, zinc was precipitated as carbonate. After thickening and filtration, zinc precipitate was roasted to generate saleable zinc oxide. Using this process, the recoveries of values to saleable products were 97% Au and 95% Ag to the alloy, respectively, 91% Pb to refined lead and 5% Pb to lead and antimony alloy and 94% Zn to zinc concentrate. The features of the technology is that it has high recovery indices of precious and base metals to saleable products and can be used to process various polymetallic ore and technogenic raw materials.
