Since the Brundtland Commission in 1987, the use of natural resources has been an issue of global concern. Minerals are among the most important Earth resources and will definitely be essential for the development of societies also in future. Increasing scientific effort is needed not only to discover new deposits, but also to promote resource management in ecologically and socially sound way. Sustainable resource management is essentially a multidisciplinary challenge of developing life-cycle analysis and recycling of non-renewable resources from local to global scale. It offers great opportunities for geological surveys not only in EU, but all over the world to contribute positively to the welfare and sustainability of societies.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

Deep Well turbine pumps receive constantly increasing application to the problem of mining water and other fluids from great depths. Many installations of medium settings are presently operating successfully and it is felt that mach greater depths are immediately within reach. Settings and lifts in excess of 2000 feet: are not at all out of reason with present knowledge experience, and materiels; however, conditions of individual applications will govern in each case and dictate methods and possibilities to the designer. Design and operating problems of deep set -turbine pumps ire discussed together with a description of various types of equipment falling within this category. Although the deep well turbine pump has been produced In the vertical turbine pump industry for many years, the connotation of the word "deep" still remains questionable. Among the manufacturers of this type of machinery, answers to the question implying the practical limitation of setting for a deep well pump will vary to an extreme. Most pump designers are in accord that this type of equipment has not yet been exploited to its fullest degree; however, the subject is admittedly fraught with unsolved problems and un¬tried solutions so that such a discussion must necessarily derive from personal opinion and, belief., even though based on substantial experience and background. For this reason, it will be stipulated that the present writing will deal with what may be termed euphemistically ?a highly controversial subject.? During the nineteenth century, a paper was published under proper authority proving beyond question that the human body could not withstand speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour. As a limitation, this looks ' pretty ridiculous to us today. At the beginning of the twentieth century, there was not a single machine in operation that could be described as mullti-stage deep well centrifugal pump. The Dallas Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel is an 8.04 km (5 mile) tunnel that will provide 100-year flood protection for impacted neighborhoods in the east Dallas area. “Big Tex” is a main beam gripper TBM capable of changing diameters in mid-tunnel to excavate 2.83 km (9,290 ft) of 11.45 m (37.58 ft) diameter tunnel and 5.21 km (17,095 LF) of 9.93 m (32.58 ft) diameter tunnel. Construction began in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. This paper will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during assembly and re-assembly, start-up and mining with “Big Tex.”

Phalaborwa, an important copper/phosphate mining town is situated about 60 km to the east of Consolidated Murchison, on the border of the Kruger National Park. The function of the geological engineer is to assist in mine planning and operations by collecting, interpreting, and applying geologic data to the solution of engineering problems. The geologist supports this effort by collecting additional geologic information specifically useful to the engineer. This use of geologic information reinforces the value of mine geology to the mining process beyond the traditional role of orebody definition. Work discussed includes: evaluation of caving strategies at the Climax and Henderson mines; support definition and slope stability at the Climax mine; and some uses of geology in cavability estimation for the Mount Emmons project.

Using a combined fire assay-atomic absorption method, gold determinations with a minimum detection limit of 5 ppb were made on 345 samples of Early Precambrian felsic plutonic rocks collected 2 2 from intrusions ranging in size from 4 km to 88 km and in composition from syenite to granodiorite. Gold levels in unmineralized stocks are consistently below the 5 ppb detection limit of the analytical method used. In contrast, analyses of samples from stocks containing gold mines within their borders and in nearby metavolcanic-metasedimentary host rocks show a strongly skewed trace element gold population with a substantial percentage of gold values exceeding 5 ppb and ranging as high as 320 ppb. The data indicate that (1) ore-stage hydrothermal metasomatism has produced widespread Au enrichment in Precambrian intrusions that host epigenetic vein-type gold deposits, and (2) geochemical Au analysis of samples collected from 30 to 50 randomly distributed sites can be used to estimate the gold exploration potential of stock-sized bodies and to outline internal patterns of Au variation which may be useful in directing exploration to particular contacts or portions of a stock. The results do not conclusively indicate unusually high Au content in primary unaltered igneous rocks.

The Buick Concentrator represents state-of- the-art technology in automated digital process control operation utilizing a centralized computer. The process control strategies implemented at Buick are no longer new to the industry but the successful application of these developments is still rather unique in North America. Productivity improvements, determined to be a direct result of the process control developments, are the primary topics of this paper. Emphasis is placed on metallurgical benefits including both lead and zinc recoveries, lead concentrate grade and reductions realized in reagent consumptions, operating costs and personnel. The productivity improvement discussion is preceded by a concentrator description and a brief history of the process control development at Buick. Current control strategies and future applications are presented afterward.

"Signs in underground mines are subject to variable airflow, which carries dust and moisture. Dust buildup reduces their visibility, hampering production efficiency and safety. Underground workers commonly must stop to clean signs in order to gauge their location, or find critical supplies or services. There are currently a variety of coating products, including dust and water repellants, available on the market that have the potential to reduce dust accumulation on sign surfaces. This paper describes a preliminary study to determine their effectiveness. The study involved a practical testing protocol using a trickle rock duster and samples cut from a clean, used road sign. Product effectiveness, under both dry and wet conditions, was evaluated based on photographic evidence by comparing changes in sign luminosity after a period of rock dust application. By analyzing the frequency of different pixel luminosities on the dust-covered samples, both uniformity of dust coverage and the total amount of accumulation was assessed. Results indicate that at least one product may reduce the amount of dust buildup on sign surfaces and increase visibility. INTRODUCTION In all underground mines, visibility of signage is critical. Signs inform miners of their location, direction toward escape routes, and location of supplies. Over time, sign surfaces can collect dust and can eventually become unreadable. The rate of dust accumulation on surfaces is often particularly high in coal mines, where both mining (e.g., cutting and drilling) and rock dusting activities can contribute significant amounts of dust to the airways. Several factors may contribute to dust buildup on sign surfaces. First, basic principles of fluid and particle flow are at play. When a fluid travels past a stationary surface, the velocity of the fluid at the surface boundary is zero. If a very small dust particle moving with air collides with a surface, it does not immediately fall off since the air velocity is zero at the sign surface. (This is the same reason that dust can collect on a rotating ceiling fan.) Further, once the collision occurs, other mechanisms may help keep the particle there – including friction that resists particle falling due to gravity, and adhesive forces due to humidity and/or static charges the particle and others already on the surface. Currently, the most common way to deal with reduced sign visibility due to dust buildup is for mine personnel (e.g., a compliance foreman, supply worker) to periodically clean sign surfaces – usually just by wiping them with a cloth. As a regular activity, this solution is inefficient; in cases of emergencies, it can also pose unnecessary risks. Application of an off-the-shelf coating to sign surfaces may represent a simple yet effective way to reduce the rate of dust accumulation. There are currently a variety of products on the market that may be suitable for this purpose, including dust and water repellants."

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. REAM is a unique and promising method of rock breaking using high energy, inert projectiles to impart mechanical energy to the rock. This paper describes a demonstration of the application of this new technology to two specific problems in open pit mining: secondary breakage and the scaling of loose material from pit walls. Under previous government contracts, Physics International Company developed the projectile impact method for a large variety of commercial and military rock excavation tasks. A 4 meter (13 foot) diameter by 16.8 meters (55 foot) long tunnel was driven at the Hope Valley Mine in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California in 1972 and 1973. An average of 1100 kg (1 ¼ tons) of a 172 MN/m2 (25,000-psi) granodiorite formation was broken by each of 590 shots used to drive the tunnel.l Based on these results it is estimated that REAM can drive over 60 meters (200 feet) of tunnel per day at about 88 percent of the cost of drilling and blasting. In addition, repeated axial impact by high energy projectiles was used to drill a 0.4 meter (16 inch) diameter horizontal hole in the same granodiorite formation. Each shot advanced the hole an average of 0.2 meter (8 inches).

Namibia is one of Africa's newest nations. A German colony until 1915, it then became a South African protectorate until 1990, when it gained independence after an armed struggle that lasted more than two decades. However, no trace of past bitterness can be found today in the capital, Windhoek, or in the countryside. Namibia is now one of the safest parts of Africa. Namibia's industrial base and infrastructure have been untouched by war. Swapo, the ruling party, has embarked on a successful policy of reconciliation and economic development. The GNP per capita is a surprising $1500 (from the World Bank), one of the highest in Africa. Namibia's population stands at 1.3 million, including about 100,000 whites. Namibia is a very sparsely populated country (1.7 inhabitants per km2). About 70% of the people are farmers. Namibia has a surface area of 824,232 km2 (318,261 sq miles), about the size of France and Germany combined. The semi-arid climate and generally flat morphology make the country well suited to mineral exploration. About 40% of the country presents abundant rock outcrops. The rest is buried under the Kalahari sands. However, this cover in most of the country hardly exceeds 200 m (655 ft), and Australian technology has shown that large mineral deposits (Roxby Downs) can nowadays be found at even greater depths. Mining is Namibia's largest industry. In 1991, it accounted for 22% of the country's GDP, about 70% to 80% of its exports by value and 25% of internally generated government revenues. The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) is responsible for formulating and implementing national mineral policies. This agency has recently introduced legislation aimed at encouraging new and long-term investment in the mineral sector. The variety of Namibian mineral resources, both metallic and nonmetallic, is rivaled by few countries worldwide.

The Golden Bear refractory gold ore roasting operation is located at Huddy Lake, in northwestern British Columbia, about BO km northwest of Telegraph Creek (see Figure 1). The mine access road, used for supplies delivery, was developed by Golden Bear and consists of a radio controlled 155 km gravel road originating at Highway 114. Hine operations are based on a two week in, two week out rotating shift schedule with personnel transport by chartered aircraft from Vancouver, Whitehorse or the 3 Talthan conmunities. The site runway Is located adjacent to the tailings impoundment.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology which results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoids) have been implicated as important biochemical mediators of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dub1 could influence the production of pro-inflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500°C and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TxB2) levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 and TxB2 production were markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE2 and TxB2 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in PGE2 and TxB2 production compared to control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 1100°C resulted in eicosanoid levels which were not significantly different from control. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production.

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) has played an integral role in many large scale tunneling projects globally. Until recently, it has been regarded as a complementary monitoring tool. On the Los Angeles Metro Purple Line Phase 1, InSAR was proposed as a primary means to replace weekly and bi-weekly surface monitoring requirements on surrounding critical infrastructure. This paper will summarize the statistical analysis approach engaged in order to compare and contrast a year of historical InSAR data to known geodetic survey data, in order to utilize InSAR as an operational monitoring tool on this project.

SL-type continuous centrifugal separator with injection flow (Injection Flowing Film Centrifugation, IFFC) for separating fine and ultra-fine minerals has been developed recently in China and it is capable of recovering particles down to one micron in size. In this paper, the principle of its separation is discussed. IFFC is a special transient pulsating film which combines both thin film jigging and thin film concentration functions. It not only can intensify the looseness and stratification of the settled particles, but also create a hydraulic weir effect to improve recovery of fines and ultra- fines and significantly improve the performance of thin film separation. In a Chinese tin gravity concentrator, SL devices, SL-1200s (capacity 1.5-2.0 ton/hr) and SL-600s (capacity 0.5 ton/hr) were applied to treat -1 0 micron cassiterite slime(removed as tailings at the past) and to replace the old tin flotation system(-74+10 micron slime). The plant results show that 50-60% of the cassiterite can be recovered from -10 micron slime with an enrichment ratio of 10-12. Particle down to one micron were recovered. Under optimal conditions, the recovery from -74+10 micron slime can reach more than 85%. The recoverable size range can be determined by calculation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines utilized a central composite experimental design to investigate leaching kinetics of pure chalcopyrite in the sulfuric acid-oxygen system. The six factors studied were oxygen pressures of 150, 300 and 450 PSI, leach temperatures of 35O, 65O, and 95O C, oxygen-to-chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5, leach times of 8, 16 and 24 hours, initial acid strengths of 0.6, 1.2 and 1.8 g H,SO,/g chalcopyrite and pyrite to chalcopyrite mass ratios of 0, 1, and 2. Chemical analysis and oxygen consumption measurements indicatedthat leaching occurs through three consecutive reactions. Temperature was the primary determinant of leach rate and solution acidity was the primary determinant of oxygen consumption, sulfur oxidation, and activation energy.

According to the "Survey of Energy Resources 1980" (1)*, which was prepared by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Raw Materials in Hannover (FRG)for the World Energy Conference 1980 in Munich, the world coal deposits are assessed at 775 billion tce proven reserves 448 billion tce of them recoverable and 6 161 billion tce additional resources. If one ignores growth rates, the current world coal output of 2,8 billion tpy gives our recoverable reserves a static life expectancy of 175 years. With an average increase in world output of 3,2 % like between 1973 and 1980 this range would be further shortened to an alarming degree. Furthermore, the criteria used to distinguish between workable and unworkable resources give rise to the suspicion that deposit characteristics are not always taken into account to a sufficient degree. For example, little attention is paid to major ?Bonitaet" - factors such as dip and seam thickness. There have been wide-ranging scientific discussions on the lower limit for workable coal resources, but no such limits have been set at the other end of the scale. Otherwise it is well known that performance and costs are badly affected den in level and moderately inclined seams the seam thickness is more than 4 to 5 m, because special mining methods have to be used beyond this limit. These are associated with significantly higher costs than with the winning of seams of ?normal? thickness.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with an American firm, has been contributing toward the creation of a new highwall mining system for extracting coal in active, unreclaimed contour strip mines in the United States. The prototype system features the computer-based, remote control, video operation of a thin-seam continuous miner. Haulage is accomplished remotely also with a 76-m (250-ft) long multiple-unit continuous haulage (MUCH) conveyor system on rubber-tire vehicles. One aspect of this multi-faceted effort has been to design a ventilation system for removing dust generated at the face during the extraction process. The remote mining system eliminates the need for personnel in the mined workings. Ventilation is required to remove visible dust from the area inby two video cameras. These cameras are located approximately 6 m (20 ft) from the face, one on either side of a modified Jeffrey 102HP continuous miner. Removing the dust from this area provides the remote operator with constant visual monitoring of coal extraction at the face and thus, insures the effective operation of the mining system. A ventilation system was designed for use in a mine opening with a maximum cross-sectional area of roughly 4 sq m (44 sq ft) excluding the mining machinery. This paper describes the ventilation system and discusses how it was developed in view of the constraints imposed by the mining equipment, mining conditions, and the extraction process.
