The DC Graphite Melter has been shown to be capable of processing radioactive waste materials. The process is characterized by its high temperature capability and operation in a closed system. From an environmental perspective, the control of emissions coupled with destruction for hazardous organic materials is mandatory. These same characteristics may be applicable to the minerals processing industry. Under normal operation, the system reaches temperatures for nominal operation of 1600°C, with an arc temperature in the order of 5000°C. The system temperature is determined by the melt temperature of the material being processed. In testing of a 750 lb/hour unit, temperatures of 2200°C were reached. Current focus is on finding waste treatment and metals recovery opportunities in the metals processing industry for his innovative technology.

Environmental due diligence investigations, also known as Phase I Environmental Audits, are increasingly important to major investors, venture partners, or prospective purchasers or sellers of mineral properties. Knowledge of environmental risks associated with a property will allow better appraisal of a property's overall desirability prior to completing the transaction. It is possible that the cost of environmental cleanup could exceed the value of the property. Topics appropriately investigated include permit status, water quality, past use of the property, hazardous materials management, storage tanks, public records pertaining to the environmental character of the property, and environmental costs.

Reliability, flexibility, redundancy, and cost-effectiveness are key in selecting and implementing inte- grated systems. Both wired and wireless components are used to deliver custom solutions and can involve interconnectivity between backbones. Systems integration is important as industry adopts proven technologies from other industries. Case stud- ies are given showing how tailor-made approaches deliver needed functionality, with varying degrees of com- plexity, in various classifications of environment, in order to meet a project need.

"The mining environment presents challenging and complex situations for the application of medical care. The combination of remote locations, difficult access and longer response times may create an increase in morbidity and mortality in the event of serious accidents. The U.S Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has only minimal requirements of first aid training for mine workers. For mine rescue team members, MSHA requires medical training at the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) level, as only prescribed by mine rescue contest rules. This paper examines, based on mine accident statistical information, whether a higher level of medical training, for example at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or at the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level can better address injuries most commonly disabling or leading to the death of miners in the United States. BACKGROUND Prehospital emergency medical care for the sick and injured has evolved considerably from first inception. Ambulances used to be staffed by persons with little training and equipment and prehospital care was focused largely on the rapid transport of the injured person to a hospital and. The modern prehospital care model was initially developed in military applications, where medics were responsible for some treatment on the battlefield and rapid transport to the care of a physician. In 1965, the National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock published Accidental Death and Disability: The Neglected Disease of Modern Society (National Research Council Committees on Trauma and Shock, 1966). This white paper laid out the consequences of the insufficiency of the Emergency Medical System (EMS) in the United States at that time. According to this paper, in 1965, 107,000 people were killed from accidental injury, with another 400,000 injured with permanent disability. The authors estimated that approximately 50% of ambulance services were provided by local morticians that were not capable of rendering advanced life support. The paper states that, based on experiences in the Vietnam war, seriously wounded soldiers had a better chance of survival in the battle field compared to traffic accident victims with similar traumatic injuries because the military was capable of providing first aid and efficient transportation to emergency care facilities. The white paper states that death rates from battle injuries declined significantly from 8% in World War I to 2% in Vietnam. The publication of this white paper is credited for the broad evolution and rapid advance of the civilian EMS system after 1965. It eventually lead to the creation of the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) National Standard Curricula (NSC) for emergency medical care in 1985. Training, and therefore required skill and knowledge for prehospital emergency care has continued to grow to reach the current standard."

The electrochemical behavior of a zinc sulfide concentrate during the microbiological leaching was investigated using ZnS-carbon paste electrodes and a cyclic voltametric technique. The effects of Zn2 [ ] , Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ on the cathodic and anodic currents associated with zinc sulfide leaching in presence and absence of microorganisms, were assessed. The semiconductor nature of zinc sulfide was discussed in terms of ability of microorganisms to obtain their metabolic energy (through removal of electrons) from this high energy gap substrate. The intermediate electrochemical reactions involved in the ZnS leaching were described.

INTRODUCTION The driving of drifts is a very important aspect of underground mining. It is not unusual for the percent¬age of rock broken during development in a mine using sublevel caving, for example, to be as much as 25% of the total. If one also considers the amount broken for transport, ventilation, and exploration drifts, one can easily understand that the planning and excavation of drifts play a major part in the total economics of the mine (Fig. 1). Increasing mechanization in mining demands larger tunnel areas for transport and mining equipment. With modern machines the hard work involved in using hand¬held pushers is gone, and a better environment is achieved. More rational methods could be used, but much of the experience the working man acquired by working close to the rock face (such as utilizing the natural weak planes in the rock when he placed the drill¬ing holes) has unfortunately been lost. By having sepa¬rate shifts for drilling, loading, and hauling, more atten¬tion has to be placed upon a well-designed drilling pattern. Some reduction in the number of holes required can be achieved with mechanized drilling because of the larger holes that can be produced. On the other hand, it is probably not possible to achieve the same precision as with pneumatic pushers, and it is difficult to utilize the larger holes because these cause more damage to the re¬maining rock. Recently, however, the precision has be¬come very good with the parallel booms and automatic devices for setting the lookout angle (Fig. 2). A larger arch of the drift roof requires a more carefully executed blasting procedure than before in order to prevent rock fall and to insure a sufficiently long stand-up time. In this chapter, empirical relationships that can be used to design an economic and optimal drift blasting design will be presented. The principles of the calcula¬tion method are based upon the earlier work of Langefors and Kihlström (1963) and Gustafsson (1973). COMPARISON OF EXPLOSIVES To provide for the use of various explosives it is necessary to have a basis of comparison. Several meth¬ods have been developed to characterize the strength of an explosive. Some examples are comparison of values given by (1) calculated explosion energies; (2) the ballistic mortar test; (3) the Trauzl lead block test; (4) the brisance test; (5) the weight strength concept; and (6) the underwater test. In an industrialized nation, as the process of industrialization continues, the ratio of the value of production of non-metallic to metallic minerals normally increases gradually over a period of years. For example, in the United States, the ratio of the value of production of non-metals to metals now is approximately two-to-one. Those of us who come from California like to think that we inherit the mantle of the old hard-rock miner, but the truth of the matter is that, in California, of the total value of mineral production exclusive of fuels, 97% comes from non-metallic - industrial - minerals. Since the industrial minerals furnish a principal source of raw materials for the construction and chemical processing industries and since these two industries, in industrialized nations, generally increase directly with increasing population, the future of industrial mineral production both in the United States and throughout the world is indeed bright. Because of the importance of industrial mineral production, it often surprises those of us in the industrial mineral industry to find that industrial minerals are poorly understood by many of our colleagues in the mining industry. I think that one reason for this comprehension of the industrial mineral industry is that the education of both geologists and mining engineers still markedly emphasizes exploitation of the metals.

Recent scientific studies by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) presented the worst-case explosion pressures that can develop if a methane-air mixture of a certain composition and dimension accumulates and ignites within a sealed area of a mine. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued its final rule on sealing of abandoned areas which considers potential explosion pressures and the risk of achieving the necessary conditions. The new MSHA seals regulation has increased the pressure design criteria an order of magnitude beyond the old standard of 140 kPa (20 psi) to 800 kPa (120 psi). However, there still are major knowledge gaps pertaining to seals and sealed areas including: (1) the composition of the sealed area atmosphere and how it changes in time and space, (2) explosion pressures that might actually develop within sealed areas, (3) engineering procedures to follow when designing seals and seal installations, and (4) guidelines to manage the atmosphere within sealed areas with monitoring or inertization. NIOSH has initiated a seals research program with collaborators from Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS) in Australia, West Virginia University (WVU), the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), and USACE. Highlights of progress so far include: (1) construction of a gas explosion tube at Lake Lynn Laboratory for studying large methane-air explosions, (2) computer simulation of the fluid dynamics of high pressure methane-air explosions, (3) development of seal analysis methods considering construction materials, reinforcement and the seal foundation, and (4) development and testing of innovative seal designs that utilize inexpensive, readily-available rock rubble to resist high explosion pressures. NIOSH researchers aim to provide sound engineering guidelines to better address the new MSHA seal regulations. Zaldivar is an open pit copper mine operation located in the Atacama Desert, in northern Chile. The plant produces Cu cathodes using 4 solvent extraction trains. The plant was started up May 1995. Since 1996 the plant has been using on-stream analyzers based on X-ray fluorescence and titration for process monitoring and control. Elemental analyzer alone is not able to provide the critical information for plant operation, it has to be complemented by on-stream titrators integrated to one sampling system. The analyzers are located in a prefabricated shelter. The analyzer system project, operation and performance issues are the main topic of this paper.

This paper is devoted to a discussion of the factors governing design of concentrators for large grinding circuits. Emphasis is placed on the manner in which use of ever larger grinding mills has affected the size of grinding bays, service cranes, gear reducers and electric motors, and the selection of ancillary equipment for cushioning of the starting load of large mills. Information is presented on the effect of using large grinding mills on the capital and operating costs of concentrators, e. g. : (Fig. 1) ? Benefits in lower cost of mills, drives and materials handling equipment, plant space, power, grinding media, operating labor and maintenance, and in ease of instrumentation and automation. ? Penalties in distribution of materials from the grinding mills to multiple lines of equipment which have not been developed to commensurately large sizes, and higher cost of ancillary equipment.

Pulverized coal (PC) and other injectants can be injected into the blowpipes of a blast furnace to decrease coke requirements. Throughout the history of blast-furnace development, there have been many attempts at injecting PC. In the 1960's a more serious effort was made to improve pulverized coal injection (PCI) technology. However, because of the additional capital requirements and the projected near-term inexpensive cost of other injectants, very few PC1 systems were installed. When the second oil crisis occurred around 1979, the shortage and high cost of fuel oil caused blast-furnace operators to operate without oil injection. It was soon discovered that blast- furnace operation without oil was not as smooth or efficient. Experiments with PC1 quickly showed that coal was a good replacement for oil which resulted in the rapid application of PC1 in both Europe and Japan. As a result, PC1 technology for blast-furnace operation has progressed rapidly during the 1980's. This paper will describe the worldwide status of PCI, characteristics of different PC1 systems, the effect of PC1 on blast-furnace process parameters, and the economic effects of using PCI. Results from the USS Blast-Furnace Thermochemical Projection Model comparing the effects of different coal properties and the effects of other tuyere injectants such as oil and natural gas will also be described.

DESIGN BASIS Size of Project The size of the project generally is expressed in tons of ore milled per day, but company policies differ widely in this respect with a few adhering to this set figure but many expecting the design capacity to be liberal. To some companies that follow the latter practice a 25,000-tpd milling plant that cannot reach 30,000 or 35,000 tpd with¬out major additions is a disappointment. The engineers responsible for planning the operation must know what is intended. Other projects are sized according to the tonnage of product rather than of mine ore; examples are iron ore mills that express size in terms of tons per year of pellets or high-grade concentrates, heavy minerals plants in tons per year of rutile or ilmenite, cement plants in barrels per year, potash in tons per year of muriate, phosphate in tons per year of washer rock and flotation concentrate, and others. However, tons per day milling rate is also the common denominator in most of those instances because the major equipment has to be selected on that criterion. Equally important are operating schedules, particularly the number of operating days per week and shifts per day for ore delivery, crushing, grinding, and processing. Hours per shift also are an impor¬tant factor in design, particularly in the case of ore delivery, and the lost time expected for maintenance, cleanup, inspection, preventive maintenance shutdowns, and many others, has to be taken into ac¬count. Frequently, the ore deposit will vary in hardness and grade to such a degree that the capacity of the mill will vary widely from year to year and cannot be expressed as a fixed figure, but rather as an average over a calculable period, such as ten years, or as a specific daily capacity over the first two years, next four years, etc., or some similar projection. A good example of this kind of situation is Asarco's Mission operation 15 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., described by Weiss and Vincent,1 where the major rock types differed widely in hardness, so that a change in the proportion of these types in the mill feed could have imposed difficult design problems if a constant tonnage rate had been expected. Expected Life The life of a mining operation depends upon the size of the deposit and the rate of mining. The latter is a policy decision based on an economic analysis2 which, in turn, is based on many factors. From the point of view of mill planning, the estimated life of the operation determines many criteria and affects many decisions on strength of structures and degree of protection of men and materials, the quality of the materials-handling and process machinery, the type of delivery systems for ore to the mill and concentrates to the smelter or market, environmental considerations, and many others. Costly installations that may be excellent investments for a 20-year project may be waste¬ful for a 5-year operation. An example is the comparison of different methods of crushing or grinding. Take single- vs. multiple-stage grind¬ing-the former may be found more economical for a 5-year operation, and the other, more costly method more economical for a 15- to 20-year life. Mining and Ore Transportation The mining method and the means of transportation of the ore to the first crushing stage have far-reaching effects upon mill design, particularly the crushing sections, and upon site selection (see Chapter 2, Situation of Mill). Consequently, mill design cannot advance until the mine planning has reached at least tentative decisions concerning these important matters, or reach the final stages until much is known about the ore that may be expected month by month and year by year for a reasonable period. Methods of ore transportation used in over 90 underground and open-pit mines are listed briefly in Section 32 (Table 1), and more detail is found later in this section and in Section 10, Storage and Transport. These methods include surface railroad, trucks, conveyors, surface skips, underground skips, and tramming from hoist or tunnel. In surface mining, transportation of the uncrushed ore by rail or truck to the primary crushing plant-conveniently located for lowest overall cost-is most common. Rail transportation provides low perton-mile costs. Truck transportation, though in some cases less eco¬nomical, is more flexible and more adaptable to mountainous terrain; furthermore, recent improvements have reduced the operating costs to keep trucks competitive on low-grade ores. The design of the primary crushing plant will be essentially the same whether delivery is by truck or rail, but the location of the plant is subject to more rigid restrictions in the latter case because of grade limitations, and these in turn may adversely affect the selec¬tion of the mill site as well. The influence of truck haulage in reducing the stripping ratio in open-pit mines is an added reason for predicting a minor role for rail transportation in the future. The use of conveyors to transport ore from the pit to the milling plant involves (in most cases) crushing the ore to a reasonable size (10 to 20 in. maximum with today's crushers) before conveying. The Twin Buttes system3 which went into operation in late 1969, utilizes primary crushers (two) and conveyors to receive rock waste, ore, and low-grade stockpile material from trucks, then transport them to the appropriate destination. Flexibility is dependent upon the porta¬bility of the primary crushers. In the face of this development, inclined skip hoists are no longer important to the mill designers. Underground mines generally pose fewer problems of design; these will be discussed in Chapter 2. Character of Deposit The degree of homogeneity of the ore in various parts of the mine is an important factor. The characteristics that concern the millman (approximately in order of importance) are: hardness, assay, metallurgical response, size distribution,4 and moisture content. Under metallurgical response may be included degree of oxidation, mineral¬ogy, clay content, and reagent consumption, as well as process re¬sponse in general. Short-term variations-hour-to-hour, day-to-day, or even week-to-week-make operation of the plant more difficult, require greater flexibility of process design and, perhaps, also require more instrumentation and manpower. Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. The regulatory landscape has changed considerably since the first passage of Oklahoma&apos;s land-reclamation requirements in 1968 (Open Cut Reclamation Act of 1968). The Oklahoma Legislature revised the reclamation requirements in 1971 with passage of the Mining Lands Reclamation Act. With the passage of this Act, the Legislature empowered the Oklahoma Department of Mines with jurisdiction for permitting and regulatory authority over non-coal (industrial-minerals) mining operations. This act required all operators to file with the State, through the Department of Mines, a written application for a permit to engage in non-coal mining. Each application consisted of a mining plan, which included location maps of the proposed mining area along with a reclamation plan for the area to be covered. Additionally, a reclamation bond is required prior to issuance of a permit to ensure that the site would be reclaimed. Since 1971, the Act has been amended to include public notification and public participation in the review process of any application. Also, the operator can request that the Department review the mining plan based on the Life Expectancy of the mine, instead of the original one-year plan (HB 1409 in 1993). Even though the operator is granted a mining plan tied to the "Life Expectancy" of the site, the permit is reviewed annually for compliance as required by law.

It is well known that the anticipated mineral price at the start of a prospective mineral project can have an overwhelming effect on a property&apos;s ex ante value. However, possible price movements throughout the life of a project can also have an impact on this value. This paper demonstrates how different potential price paths can affect project value. When considering commodity price projections for mine valuations, it is thus necessary to estimate not only the expected commodity price at the start of the project, but also the manner in which that price is likely to fluctuate throughout the project&apos;s life.

Pyrometallurgical products from lime roasting of refractory gold ores, pyrite, and arsenopyrite have been examined for their mineralogy, porosity, permeability, retention of contaminant sulfur and arsenic, and potential effectiveness of gold extraction. Cathodoluminescence microscopy, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive analysis study, has shown that the products phases have characteristic cathodoluminescence properties as follows: anhydrite (CaS04), deep blue; unreacted portlandite (Ca(OH)2), deep purple; oldhamite (CaS), light yellow to rarely pink or orange; a sulfur-rich, arsenic-poor phase, violet; an arsenic-rich, sulfur-poor phase, non-CL. Within the temperature range examined (400-850°C), hematite exhibits greater porosity and permeability at the intermediate roast temperatures of 600-650°C.

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today&apos;s context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

In 1986, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that could substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards by simply relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced-exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM&apos;s ongoing health and safety efforts aimed at reducing and controlling dust and noise and reducing accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports on the progress made on the developing research and demonstrates the technologies required for the computer-assisted teleremote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems and roof bolting machines.

ROCKS outcropping in Elandsrand&apos;s lease area consist of quartzite, shale and lava of the Pretoria group and are underlain first by 1 300 metres of dolomite and then by the Black Reef series. This in turn rests unconformably on Ventersdorp and Witwatersrand rocks and truncates the basal member of the Ventersdorp Super group, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), near the northern boundary of the lease. The Ventersdorp Super group is composed of lava and varies in thickness from nil in the north of the lease area to 1 000 metres in the south. The VCR, less than 100 cm thick, dips 210 to the south east and lies between 1 786 and 3 386 metres below datum. The Oberholzer dyke straddles the north-western corner of the property and separates the dewatered Oberholzer compartment, over which most of Elandsrand lies, from the as yet undewatered Turffontein compartment. As so much of the lease area is covered by thick impermeable rocks, the water-bearing capacity of the underlying dolomite was expected to be low. The man-material (MM) and rock hoisting ventilation (RU) shafts were sited well within and above a gravimetrically determined 200-metre &apos;safe-limit&apos; contour of the northern slope of the Gatsrand. Two pre-cementstion holes were drilled and the cementation rigs were placed within a 15 metre annulus round each shaft to seal any likely water-bearing pockets in the proximity of the excavation during sinking through the first 300 metres of shales and the surface water-table.
