Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts in the United States. The paper describes mining and ore recovery methods common to the Batesville manganese district, Independence County, Ark., and gives the costs of producing merchantable ore by three operators whose methods were more or less typical of those of many other local manganese producers. The operating costs reported were those of Leonard Baxter at mines on Brooks Hill for the calendar year 1958 and Arkansas Mining and Exploration Corp. at Section 16 mine and the Searcy group of mines and Miller-McGee Corp. at the Diener mine during the first 6 months of 1959. Manganese are was mined in the district as early as 1849 and almost continuously thereafter until August 1959, when termination of the Government's domestic manganese purchase program resulted in complete cessation of mining activity. During those years, production came from more than 189 mines and properties, of which only a few produced as much as 30,000 tons of merchantable ore.

The grain boundary adsorption of solutes as a function of bulk concentration and solution temperature was studied using internal-frictimz techniques. From the variation of the cor-responding energy of activation for the Phenomenon, the inter-actior2 energy between a solute atom and a high-angle boundary was calculated. Interaction energies in the range of 0.3 ev were obtained, and were used to obtain the actual concentration of solute at the grain boundary. In corroboralory creel, studies the direct grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain was measured. It was found that the interface creep varied with the type and magnitude of the solute adsorbed. Subscribing to the theory of their being energetically favorable sites at the grain boundary for solutes of both Positive and negative size deviations, ternaries were investigated in Which solutes of both types were present. A marked increase in the resistance to grain boundary creep was manifested. THE major difficulty which has been encountered in investigations of the grain boundary segregation of solutes has been the lack of a sufficiently sensitive method of measuring the amount of adsorbed solute at the boundary. For the general case of a high-angle boundary, no direct method of measuring the adsorption at the boundary has been found to date. Internal friction has been used in several studies of grain boundary adsorption1-3 and although it is somewhat indirect, it was demonstrated to have the necessary sensitivity. In this investigation the authors have used internal-friction techniques in conjunction with a study of the grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain. As both parts of the investigation were performed on the same specimens it was possible to combine a highly sensitive technique with a somewhat more direct method in order to obtain information about the adsorption phenomenon. From internal-friction studies the rate of increase of the activation energy was observed to be a function of the difference in size between the solute and solvent atoms. It was proposed that if Gibbs' adsorption isotherm is considered, i.e., where r is the excess solute at the boundary, c is the bulk concentration, and ay/ac is the change in grain boundary energy with bulk concentration, then AH b/ac must vary in the same way as ay/ac and therefore In this way a relative measure of the grain boundary adsorption of solutes is directly obtainable from in-ternal-friction studies. If the previous work in the field of grain boundary adsorption of solutes is examined, certain apparent information is desirable if the phenomenon is to be understood. The most important questions that must be asked are as follows: 1) Is the adsorption of solutes at the grain boundary an equilibrium process? 2) Can the Mott model of the grain boundary be used as a basis of setting up an elastic interaction between the grain boundary and solute atoms? 3) Is it possible to obtain an exact measure of the excess solute at the grain boundary as a function of temperature and bulk concentration rather than merely a relative measure of the adsorption 4) Are the conclusions obtained from an indirect method such as internal-friction studies meaningful in considering gross grain boundary effects such as creep? Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

This paper examines the issues involved in the technical audit and valuation of exploration prospects. Certain methodologies are more appropriate to use depending upon whether the mineral property valuation is of an exploration area, a project under development, or an operating mine. Valuation approaches that are reviewed include the Multiple of Exploration Expenditure, Joint Venture Terms, Rules of Thumb, and particularly the Kilburn Rating Method. The DCF/NPV Financial Simulation Method, even modified by the use of Expected Values, is not considered appropriate for valuing exploration prospects. The choice of the most appropriate methodology and its successful application depends primarily upon the amount of reliable input data available and, more importantly, the experience and judgement of the valuer. It must be remembered that all valuations are time and circumstance specific and will be generally subject to revision as more data becomes available.

This report presents the results of the economic analysis of several applicable alternatives to increase airflow in four underground coal mines. Pressure-quantity surveys were conducted underground and measurements were also made at the main mine fan(s). The existing ventilation networks were modeled using the modified Penn State ventilation simulator. The applicable alternatives were simulated. Performance data obtained from these simulation runs were utilized to conduct the cost-effectiveness analysis. The costs for each of the alternatives included capital, operating and operating costs. These costs were expressed as annual ventilation costs per active section in terms of dollars per cfm taking into account the economic life associated with each of the alternatives. The benefits were expressed as increased airflow quantity in the critical sections. A section of this report also deals with comparison of simulator predicted air quantity values against air quantity values measured under-ground. This volume constitutes Volume II of the report and contains the outputs of the computer simulation runs.

This report summarizes the results of a nationwide investigation completed in 1964 to determine the nonferrous base metal ore reserves and potential sources of ore and to evaluate criteria for their ultimate exploitation. Engineers of the Bureau of Mines contacted mining company officials, reviewed reports and Government records, and where necessary made personal appraisals in arriving at the results. The estimates are presented by metals in ores in geographic regions and include some of the problems affecting the reserves and potential sources. The recoverable metal in the measured ore category and in the total ore reserves was estimated as follows: [ ] At the 1963 rate of domestic mine production these total reserves would be adequate to provide copper for 62 years, lead for 121 years, and zinc for 42 years. Data also are given for gold, silver, and other coproducts. Reserve estimates greatly exceed those of previous investigations; some prior estimates of copper reserves are included for comparison (table 23). Projections of requirements for base metals indicated the United States will need approximately 45 percent more copper in 1970 and 110 percent more by 1980 than was consumed in 1960; similar projections for lead indicate increases of 20 percent by 1970 and 45 percent by 1980; zinc projections are 40 percent more by 1970 and 90 percent by 1980. Much of the production of gold and silver is a coproduct of base metals recovery and the projected need for the precious metals exceeds all the United States can produce. Some problems of the industry are mentioned. A graphic evaluation of the economic availability of the reserve and potential sources is shown.

Muscovite mica crystals lower than 15 mm diameter are discarded as waste in the mining area of Borborema-Seridó (BRAZIL). The objective of this work was the ore dressing and purification of this waste to be used in the preparation of pearlescent pigment. Muscovite was dry ground using knife mills and an ultrasound treatment. It was possible to achieve 67% of mica with particle size lower than 100 µm. This product was used in the preparation of brilliant pigments based on muscovite flakes covered with rare earth oxides (CeO2, PrO2, Ce0,95Pr0,05O2). The pigments were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and scanning electronic microscopy. The color of the resulting pigments was analyzed using the CIELAB method and it showed the following colors: muscovite-CeO2 ? yellow, muscovite-PrO2? black and muscovite-Ce0,95Pr0,05O2 ? orange. Those results have shown that ?trash mica? is suitable for use in pigment preparation.

"In mineral exploration and mining applications, it is sometimes necessary to reduce sampling error in order to improve representivity of individual sample assays. Historic efforts to reduce sampling error have relied on the belief that larger samples exhibit less sampling error. Justifications for this belief traditionally have coupled the binomial theorem with an ideal geological material consisting of ore and gangue particles of equal size and shape (an equant grain model) and empirical tests of geological materials, to illustrate an inverse relationship between sample size and sampling variance. To date, no proof exists of this sample size-sampling variance relationship in real geological materials exhibiting variations in grain size, shape, composition, and degree of liberation.Using first principles calculus and the formula for the mean, sample mass and sampling variance are proven to be inversely proportional in all geological materials. Distribution assumptions and physically ideal geological models are not used in this proof. Furthermore, algebraic manipulations of expressions describing the variances of equant grain models consistent with binomial, hypergeometric, and Poisson distributions reveal that these models also exhibit an inverse sample size-sampling variance relationship. Thus, the sampling behaviors of these models are numerically consistent with the sampling behaviors of real geological materials, and these models can be used to estimate sampling errors in real geological materials using simple sampling parameters."

The operation of Kennecott 's Bingham Canyon copper precipitation plant, one of the world's largest, is described. This description includes a brief historical review of precipitation at Bingham and the general layout and operation of the present cone cementation facility. Current practices are based on results of studies undertaken to define improvements needed in each unit operation. These improvements were required to meet changing plant conditions and were implemented primarily within the constraints of the existing facilities. Specific unit operations included were the cone precipitators, the cone discharge thickener, the cone effluent settling basins, and the plate and frame filter presses. As a result of these improvements, loss of precipitated copper decreased and the degree of precipitation increased, raising copper recovery by 9 t/d. At the same time, iron consumption was reduced by 22.5 t/d. Problems in drying the cement copper were also overcome so that a product containing 12-15% moisture could be consistently delivered for smelting.

Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the results of three independent reconnaissance geochemical surveys conducted in the vicinity of the Bush Dome reservoir in the Bureau-owned Cliffside field near Amarillo, Tex. The surveys consisted of (1) determining the helium content of area ground waters, (2) determining the helium content of area soil gases and ground waters, and (3) determining the helium content of soil gases collected on a grid sampling pat- tern in the Cliffside field area. The native natural gas in the Cliffside field contains about 1.8 percent helium. To date, approximately 54 billion cubic feet of gas containing approximately 39 billion cubic feet of helium has been injected into the center of the Bush Dome structure. The research work, which was completed under contracts, was done to determine if helium concentration levels in ground water and soil gas could he used as an indication of the presence of helium in a subsurface natural gas accumulation. Results of the surveys were positive in that helium-in-water and helium-in- soil-gas anomalies were detected in portions of the Cliffside field area. All helium analyses were performed by mass spectrometric techniques.

Biomineralization of manganese on titanium condenser material exposed to seawater has been illustrated. Biom-ineralization occurs when the fouling components, namely, the microbes, are able to oxidize minerals present in water and deposit them as insoluble oxides on biofilm surfaces. Extensive biofilm characterization studies showed that an alarmingly large number of bacteria in these biofilms are capable of oxidizing manganese and are, thereby, capable of causing biomineralization on the condenser material exposed to seawater. This paper addresses studies on understanding the exact role of the microbes in bringing about oxidation of manganese. The kinetics of manganese oxidation by marine Gram-positive manganese oxidizing bacterium Bacillus spp. that was isolated from the titanium surface was studied in detail. Manganese oxidation in the presence of Bacil-lus cells, by cell free extract (CFE) and heat-treated cell free extract was also studied. The study confirmed that bacteria mediate manganese oxidation and lead to the formation of biogenic oxides of MnO2, eventually leading to biomineralization on titanium surface exposed to seawater.

The computer program described in this user's guide provides for the static, three-dimensional, linear and nonlinear analysis of structural and geological systems by the finite element method. The guide describes the capabilities and general features of the program and shows how input is prepared. A number of recent advances in finite element theory and computer technology are incorporated in the program. Nonlinear material properties are provided for, including isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent material properties, gravity loading, simulation of a sequence of excavation or construction, and a slip or joint element. The finite elements include beam, rod, axisymmetric and plane quadrilateral, hexahedron, thick shell, axisymmetric and plane joint, and a three-dimensional joint. The program also has an automatic mesh generator to minimize user input preparation for continuum finite element meshes.

U-Th isotope studies of recent volcanic rocks may be used to evaluate the depths and rates of melt generation beneath midocean ridges and ocean islands. Island arc rocks exhibit a similar range in Th isotopes to that seen in both MORB and om, but while those with high (230Th/232Th) tend to have excess 238U, many of those with low (230Th/232Th) are in isotope equilibrium. The excess 238U is attributed to the preferential mobilisation of U in hydrous fluids from the subducted slab within the last 100 000 years, whereas the low Th isotope ratios in the higher-K arcs are primarily due to the introduction of subducted sediment. Preliminary results from mineral separates from lavas on Soufriere on the island of St. Vincent indicate that some of the minerals crystallised up to 50 000 years prior to eruption.

Theory pertaining to the exchangeability of fuel gases on appliances has been extended to exchanges of propane or butane with mixtures of these. In particular, new considerations were developed bearing on the hazard of an occasional emission of carbon monoxide and flashback and blowoff possibilities. The new considerations involve using current requirements for approval of liquefied petroleum gas appliances. These requirements were used to predict allowable tolerances in chemical composition of liquefied petroleum gases for existing appliances. In addition, changes in gasline pressure were computed which may be substituted in place of fuel exchanges during testing of appliances,

This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Johnson Camp copper -zinc mine , Coronado Copper & Zinc Co. , Cochise County , Ariz . , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . Johnson Camp is in the eastern foothills of the Little Dragoon Mountains in secs . 23 , 24 , 25 , and 26 , T. 15 S. , R. 22 E. ( fig . 1 ) . The mining property is in the low, rolling foothills at an altitude of slightly over 5,000 feet above sea level ( fig . 2 ) . The area is covered with scattered grass and small desert shrubs . The climate is mild , with hot summers and mild winters . The average annual precipitation is about 12 inches . The nearest surface water is the San Pedro River , some 12 miles west of the mine . The property is owned by the Coronado Copper & Zinc Co. , Los Angeles , Calif . This report gives a brief history of the property , describes the general geology of the area and of the ore deposits , outlines the methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives the methods of sampling and of estimating ore reserves . Development and stoping methods are explained . Underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures also are described . The last section gives a brief description of the milling practice .

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated.
