The iron ore province of Quebec and Baffin Island trends from the southern shore of Baffin Island northeasterly through the Labrador Trough to Matonipi Lake, approximately 185 miles northwest of Seven Islands, but future geologic field studies will very likely extend the limits of the province to include the ferruginous and associated rocks of the Lake Mistassini area. Recent improvements in the beneficiation of low-grade iron ore have stimulated widespread exploration for deposits amenable to concentration, particularly along the southwest extension of the Trough. GENERAL LITHOLOGY Pleistocene and recent deposits of clay, sand, gravel and erratic boulders cover roughly 60% of the land surface. All of the bedrock is of Precambrian age (Table I). Paragneisses and paraschists together with metasedimentary iron-formation, marble and quartzite are abundant and, for the most part, appear to be metamorphic equivalents of the relatively unmetamorphosed rocks of the Labrador Trough to the north beyond the "Grenville Front." Bodies of amphibolite are widely scattered. A large portion of the metamorphic rock shows some degree of permeation by granite material as well as alteration by hydrothermal solutions. The youngest bedrock consists of a complex containing slightly altered ultramafic to monozonitic intrusives.

The objective of this investigation was to study the electrokinetic behavior of oxidized coals to indicate the feasibility of separating oxidized coals from ash materials and pyrite by an amine flotation process. The effects of soluble inorganic electrolyte products from coal oxidation were also examined. The electro-kinetic behavior of coals of different rank and degree of oxidation were studied by an electro-phoreses technique. Generally, increasing the oxidation increases the negative value of the zeta-potential and decreases the isoelectric point (IEP). Flotation results indicate that the flotation recovery increases with decreasing pH values, and that with ferrous sulfate at pH 6.5 the flotation recovery is optimum while the pyrite is depressed. Comparing the flotation results with the electokinetic results verified that in the presence of ferrous sulfate, the maximum hydro-phobicity of oxidized coal with dodecylamine and frother is near its IEP, which is around pH 6.5 to 7.0.

THIS communication reports the results of some work done on the effect of gold, palladium, and platinum on the liquid-gas-solid equilibrium in the Ag-O system,1,2 see Fig. 1. Recently several investigators3, 4, 5 have reported the effects of gold, palladium, platinum, and copper on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver. This communication represents only a portion of the work done here on the solubility of oxygen in liquid silver and liquid Ag-Au, Ag-Pd, and Ag-Pt alloyss—the greater part having already been reprted. The apparatus, materials, and procedures used were similar to those of earlier work.' l The main precautions observed in obtaining these freezing points at constant temperature and PO2 = 1 atm were as follows: 1) The points were approached very slowly from higher temperatures. 2) In the very near vicinity of the L-G-S equilibrium point precautions were taken to see that the melt was in equilibrium with oxygen at one atm. Equilibrium was considered to have been attained when no more absorption of oxygen was observed in the last 15 min at a fixed temperature. 3) In the case of these alloys, the freezing point of the melt at 1 atm of oxygen and the equilibrium amount of oxygen absorbed by the liquid "infinitesimally" above this point were determined by lowering the temperature in very, very small steps, equilibrating at

Discussion of the paper of FRANKLIN MOELLER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 343 to 354. K. A. PAULY, Schenectady, N. Y.-I read with interest Mr. Moeller's paper descriptive of the mechanical parts of the new electric hoist at the Granite Shaft of the North Butte Mining Co. and as the paper treats largely of the mechanical equipment I have little discussion to offer. There is, however, one question which I would like to ask and that is, why the discrepancy in hoisting cycles between the curves given in the paper read by Mr. Sykes for the American Institue of Electrical Engineers at San Francisco and those given in the paper under discussion? In Mr. Sykes' curves the acceleration period is shown to be 16 sec. for all depths from 2,000 to 4,000 ft. inclusive, while Mr. Moeller in Fig. 2 shows 25 sec. throughout the range and in Fig. 4 shows 35 sec. Vapor pressure of silver over silver-gold alloys has been measured over a range of temperatures for four compositions. Orifice effusion has been compared with electromotive force measurement as a means for determining thermodynamic activities in these solid metallic alloys. Correlated activity coefficients are given for silver-gold alloys for the temperature range 200' to 1000°C. SOUND development of a technique for the measurement of some property of matter requires a comparison with other recognized procedures which have been used to measure the same property. Such a check is especially useful if the assumptions on which the applications stand are basically different for the two methods. Agreement in the results tends to confirm both sets of assumptions. The electromotive force method for determining thermodynamic activities depends upon the reversibility of the electrode processes and a knowledge of the valence states involved. The orifice effusion technique of determining vapor pressures requires that certain mean free path conditions be met, that the state of association of the vapor be known, and that efficient collection of vapors be maintained. Thus the requirements are quite different in nature. Although procedures often exist by which the fulfillment of these conditions may be tested internally, agreement of thermodynamic activities for a single system obtained by both methods constitutes a more severe test of the assumptions. There are two general methods in use for the production of metallic copper from matte which are worthy of consideration : (1) the Welsh blister process, and (2) the converter process.' As practically all of the copper produced to-day is made in converters, we will give a brief outline of that process before proceeding with the special subject of this paper. Matte may be roughly defined as a mixture of the sulphides of copper, iron, nickel, silver, etc. In the converter process this is blown up to metallic copper in a modified type of Bessemer converter. The conversion of matte consists mainly in, (1) the removal of sulphur in the form of SO2, and (2) the slagging of the iron. With this brief statement we come to the two subdivisions of the process of converting mattes: Converting with acid linings. Converting with basic linings. Converting with Acid Lininys, This is carried out by lining the converter with siliceous rock or ore, which performs two functions: It protects the iron shell of the converter from the molten charge, and it furnishes the silica for combining with the iron as it is oxidized from the matte, to form a ferrous silicate. It follows from the second of these functions that this siliceous lining must be replaced from time to time, and in practice it has been necessary to reline converters every 8 to 40 hr., this time varying in different plants and even with different linings in the same plant, the life of a lining depending upon the grade of the matte treated, and upon the composition, the thickness, the tamping, and the drying of the lining.

THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a previous paper.1 The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques.

Kennecott Copper's mining activities in Arizona are conducted by the Ray Mines Div., located in Ray, Ariz., in the Mineral Creek mining district about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix. The Ray orebody lies in a mineralized zone belted on the east, west, and north by well defined faults. The orebody consists principally of schist with intrusions of quartz porphyry and diabase. The dominant ore mineral in the schist and quartz porphyry is chalcocite, with some native copper, and in most areas the orebody has been heavily oxidized. In the diabase the dominant ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore deposition in the schist portion is very erratic, with no apparent structural explanation. In 1873 silver prospectors opened the mining district, but it was not until 1899 that an English company made the first major attempt to exploit the copper deposits. This venture failed because of improper sampling and limited development work. In 1904 D. C. Jackling, Seeley Mudd, and Philip Weiseman became interested in the Ray Copper Co. and the Gila Copper Co., which later merged as Ray Consolidated Copper Co. In 1926 the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. took over Ray Consolidated and in turn was taken over by Kennecott Copper Corp. in 1933. The extensive program of surface and underground development and exploration begun in 1907 continued through successive changes of management and ownership to the present time.

Diamond drilling through caving formations at depths greater than ZOO0 ft has long presented serious difficulty, generally solved either by casing or cementing. Casing is permitted only when the resulting smaller hole is acceptable, and cementing is frequently a problem at depth. A new method that injects cement under pressure at the desired location is an aid in diamond drilling deep holes. DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pump- ing process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. IT can scarcely be considered a matter of doubt, in the present state of our knowledge, that the existence of, at any rate, two well-marked allotropic modifications of gold can be recognized, namely (a), the ordinary, yellow variety, and (b) the red, brown or purple, non-lustrous, amorphous variety. There are, indeed, not wanting indications that still other allotropic forms may be capable of existing. It is, for instance, possible that the green colors of gold obtained under certain conditions, or the black powder produced when the alloy of gold with potassium is decomposed by water, may represent further allotropic modifications, although this proposition is open to doubt. It call scarcely be pretended that the two first-named varieties have been absolutely isolated, yet it is, perhaps, quite permissible to speak of the ordinary and the amorphous modifications as having a proved existence. Ordinary gold is sometimes found crystallized in nature, although never in a state of purity. When gold is melted and, cooled slowly, its surface shows crystalline markings, and the fact that it is capable of crystallizing in the cubic system may be looked upon as established. When gold is produced by precipitation, the form which it assumes is dependent on the conditions of precipitation. G. Rose 1 says that gold precipitated by ferrous sulphate from very dilute solutions is so finely divided that no regular form can be recognized, but in more concentrated solutions the precipitate consists of minute cubes. When oxalic acid is used as a precipitant, the gold is coarser and forms octahedral crystals. J. Thomsen 2 has obtained similar results. Working with dilute and with highly-dilute

(written discussion?).-In this exposition of experimental data, the author infers, indirectly at least, that by the Charpy test information was obtained that led to the improve-ment of certain ordnance parts and that this improvement could not have been attained without the Charpy test. On examination of the data, however, it appears that the important point of the whole matter was that while the material had been accepted from the results of longitudinal tensile tests, it was really transverse ductility that was desired. The writer has no desire to attempt to detract from the value of the paper or to discredit the Charpy test in any way, but he would like to ask the author if he will not give more clearly his reasons for preferring the Charpy impact test for investigational and control work of this kind, over the more usual tensile test made in a transverse direction. The tensile test pieces are more cheaply made than the square notched impact bars; and from the former the limit of elasticity and the ultimate strength as well as, the ductility are obtained, while in the Charpy test only one property is measured. It does not seem that the author has shown a sufficient reason for favoring the latter test, when both it and the trans-verse tensile test served his purpose equally well in indicating the proper metal and treatment required for his special forging, and it is hoped that this reason will be given more clearly as a matter of useful general information.

INTRODUCTION Considerable research has been conducted on the use of steady and pulsed jets of water at high pressures to produce slots or holes in rock, and to fracture rock. The primary objectives of prior research have generally been to determine the feasibility of excavating or drilling rock or minerals and to determine the optimum jet parameters for this purpose. The present study was undertaken in order to identify the pertinent dimensionless parameters involving jet and rock properties which characterize the liquid jet penetration process and to develop empirical correlations of the existing test data which would permit engineering prediction by means of scaling relationships. The present paper is in the nature of a progress report, because not all the existing test data have been processed. Also effort has been concentrated on correlation of data on the specific energy (jet kinetic energy per unit volume of rock removed or broken), rather than correlation of jet penetration depth, hole diameter, kerf depth or kerf width. However, it is clear that this method of correlating data on specific energy in terms of dimensionless parameters shows great promise and provides insight into the nature of the physical processes of jet erosion and fracture. It therefore can help to avoid drawing incorrect conclusions from limited experimental data. DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS The method of dimensional analysis is particularly valuable where the mathematical relationships controlling a physical process are unknown or complex. The grouping

Three porphyry copper districts in southern Arizona are partly overlain by post-ore fanglomerates with certain physical and petrologic characteristics which define a distinct and significant class of rock. These units are the Locomotive fanglomerate at Ajo, the Helmet fanglomerate at Twin Buttes-Mission-Pima, and the Cloudburst formation at San Manuel- Kalamazoo, herein termed “Locomotive-type fanglomerates.” Post-ore units at Poston Butte and Lakeshore, Ariz., and Sar Chesmeh, Iran, also appear to fit this class. Locomotive-type fanglomerates may be genetically related to porphyry copper deposits as subsequent products of differentiation, volcanism, uplift, and sedimentation in short-lived basins of limited areal extent. These units are sufficiently distinct to be utilized as exploration guides for porphyry copper deposits in the Southwestern U.S., northern Mexico, and elsewhere.

SILVER Bell is situated 35 airline miles northwest of Tucson, Ariz., in a small, rugged range rising above the extensive alluvial plains of this desert region. Its geographical relation to other porphyry copper deposits of the Southwest is shown on the inset map in the lower left corner of Fig. 1. The climate is semi-arid. Altitudes range within 2000 and 4000 ft. Opening of the Boot mine, later known as the Mammoth, in 1865 was the first event of note in the district's history. Oxidized copper ores containing minor silver-lead values were mined from replacement deposits in garnetized limestone and treated in local smelters. Copper production had approached 45 million pounds by 1909 when the disseminated copper possibilities in igneous rocks were recognized. Extensive churn drill exploration carried out during the next three years resulted in partial de- lineation of two copper sulphide deposits, the Oxide and El Tiro. Although the then submarginal tenor discouraged exploitation of these disseminated deposits, selective mining of orebodies in the sedimentary rocks continued intermittently until 1930, providing a production total of about 100 million pounds of copper.

The occurrence of rock bursts in deep metal/nonmetal mines presents a major hazard to their safe and economical operation. As part of a Bureau of Mines program to reduce rock bursts in deep vein mining, a project was conducted in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of Idaho to evaluate and demonstrate the mining of a destressed sill pillar using undercut-and-fill methods. A 50-ft sill pillar in a burst-prone area was preconditioned by drilling and blasting vertical holes in the ore. After raises were driven through the destressed pillar to the level above, it was mined by the undercut-and-fill method. The conclusion from this demonstration is that the combination of ore preconditioning and underhand mining resulted in greatly improved rock burst and ground control, allowing safe and efficient mining of a potentially hazardous, burst-prone pillar.

Some years from now, perusal of the unfolding saga of the nickel family will show that the year 1968 was the herald of change-both in the geography of its endeavors and in its technology. No one should doubt any longer that oxide ores of nickel have come of lusty age-their heavyweight stature in the Caribbean area and in the Western Pacific can be shrunk only by immersion in the politics of unhappiness. The sulfide branch of the family has been augmented afar off by substantial ore deposits in western Australia-right across the globe from Sudbury-and in southern Africa, 9000 miles from the nickel hub. The Foreword of the 1961 AIME volume, dealing with the extractive metallurgy of copper and nickel, noted that "the dead hands of nitrogen" had been lifted from oxidation reactions utilizing air and that the industry was on the threshold of under- standing this fact. Here, at least, nonferrous industry had led its ferrous counterpart in the commercial use of tonnage oxygen in liquid phase pyrometallurgy-the reference is to oxygen flash smelting. Today large oxygen-producing plants are blossoming everywhere and the fruits which will follow are many and varied. Among them is Inco's forthcoming use of the top-blown oxygen converter for sulfide melts. The bell tolls for those "pyro- metallurgical dinosaurs" which still stalk smelter aisles the world around. Silicate oxide nickel ores will rejoice in the glow of modern elevated temperature chemical metallurgy in its various manifestations, vindicating the bulldog spirit of that ancient of clans, the hot metal men-including the renovator of Le Nickel's Doniambo Works.

The mineral, garnet, is a common associate of copper-ore in the southwestern portion of the United States. This association may be observed on a large scale in southwestern Arizona, in southern New Mexico and in Sonora, Old Mexico, especially at El Cananea, and at Nacozari. At other localities in Mexico the general occurrence of garnet " as a contact metamorphic mineral" in the copper-deposits of the Cretaceous limestone is noted by José G. Aguilera.1 It is usually found at the contact of this limestone with diorites, granites, etc., at numerous mines. The same authority also cites the occurrence of garnet in metamorphosed Cretaceous limestone alongside of diorite dikes in association with iron-ore. Other foreign examples are found in the Banat and Servia, at Rezbanya in Hungary, and Offenbanya in Transylvania, and at Bogoslovsk in the Urals. In New South Wales, at Broken Hill, the gangue in the Proprietary mine is chiefly garnet, with quartz, opal and rhodonite.2 Also, in a recent paper by George Smith, entitled, " The Garnet-Formations of the Chillagoe Copper-Field, North Queensland, Australia,"3 it is shown that in the copper-field of Chillagoe, Australia, where there are many lode-formations, about one-half of the number are garnetiferous, and many of this garnet-type are associated with magnetite, which is regarded as of analogous origin. The two minerals are found merging imperceptibly into each other. These examples suffice to show the very general and wide distribution of garnet as an associate of copper-ore. INTRODUCTION Flotation is by far the most important unit operation of mineral processing. Most of the common base metals are produced from flotation concentrates of metal sulfides. Flotation is proving to be a valuable process for producing non-metallic minerals such as ceramic oxides, silicates, clays and phosphate fertilizers. All these fltation separations are carried out on materials which are predominantly in the 10 to 100 micronssize range. The present practice of flotation circuits for the production of large tonnages of metallic and non-metallic mineral concentrates is fairly well understood, developed, and standardized. Two kinds of problems are encountered (1, 2) with fine particles smaller than 10 microns. First is the interference of the fine particles with the flotation of the coarser particles and the second is the poor flotation behavior of fine particles. In general, these problems are handled either by eliminating, minimizing, or ignoring the fines in the flotation circuit feed. In recent years, however, a considerable number of experimental and theoretical studies have been carried out to understand the flotation behavior of fine particulates. This literature is summarized in four review papers (2-5). Application of the conventional flotation techniques for the separation of mineral fines is known to be uneconomical, and to present several scientific and technological problems (1-5). The objective of this presentation is to examine the flotation behavior of fine particles in terms of their physical-chemical properties and to review the potential techniques of fine particle flotation. Specific reference to the problem areas and research needs will also be included in the discussion.

FOR many years, the belief that the so-called "Clinton" sand of Ohio might produce. oil and gas, if it could be reached, has been prevalent in West Virginia. To test this theory, many hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent and several extremely deep wells, including the deepest boring of the world, have been sunk at various points. With the exception of one well now completed through the sand and the possible exception of another still in progress, all of these wells failed to reach the goal, either through failure of funds or through drilling accidents. REVIEW OF DEEP DRILLING The subject of deep-sand oil and gas in West Virginia has already been discussed by the author1 and by White.2 In these papers, it was shown that the Upper and. Middle Devonian shales, lying between the Berea oil sand (basal Mississippian) and the Oriskany sandstone (Lower Devonian), thicken steadily from eastern Ohio across northern West Virginia and Pennsylvania; but it was stated that the same rate of thickening did not occur in that part of West Virginia south of the Great Kanawha River and in the adjoining portion of Kentucky. In spite of this great eastward thickening, the fact that both the Oriskany and "Clinton" sands, the latter of which is equivalent to the White Medina of New York, exist in great thickness all along the Appalachian Mountains farther east, was held as proof of their probable presence in the deep Appalachian basin.

THIS paper presents the results and analysis of field trials of various magnetic instruments over anomalies ranging from 20 to 5000 gammas of vertical intensity. The following instruments were used: Askania vertical magnetometer, Wolfson vertical magnetometer (model M-I), Hotchkiss Superdips (used both parallel to and normal to the magnetic meridian, with several settings of the "sigma" angle), Lake Superior dip needle, and the dipping circle for measurements of inclination. The change in inclination over the measured anomalies ranged up to 4°; this caused pronounced changes in sensitivity of the Hotchkiss Superdip oriented parallel to the magnetic meridian. The variable sensitivity not only gives apparent displacement of crests of anomalies, particularly at high sensitivities, but also makes the data difficult or impossible to use in preparation of iso-anomaly maps. This weakness in field performance of the Superdip is shown to be eliminated by orienting the instrument normal to the magnetic meridian and measuring vertical intensity only, which in the latitude of upper Michigan is equal to 97 pct of the total intensity. The dip needle is seen to be relatively ineffectual for location of anomalies of less than 400 gammas.
