THE increased demand for titanium alloys with improved high-temperature creep strengths has stimulated interest in silicon as an alloying addition to titanium. Silicon is a potent solid-solution strength-ener and, if added in sufficient concentration and properly heat-treated, can also dispersion-strengthen titanium by eutectoid decomposition.' However, better understanding of the nature and distribution of the resulting silicide dispersion in more highly alloyed titanium matrices is necessary for the development of useful titanium alloys which utilize the latter strengthening mechanism. This note describes the chemical and crystallographic characteristics of the silicide phase as it occurs in a typical high-temperature near-a titanium alloy matrix. Several Ti-6A1-3Sn-3Zr a11oys containing various amounts of silicon ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 pct were melted as 10- to 20-lb ingots and processed into 1/2-in.-diam bar stock. The microstructures of specimens annealed at various temperatures were conveniently summarized by the (Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr)-Si pseudobinary phase diagram illustrated in Fig. 1. Comparison with the Ti-Si equilibrium diagram indicates the substitutional solutes (Al-Sn-Zr) increase the eutectoid temperature and decrease the a terminal solubility. Annealing at temperatures sufficiently high to dissolve the silicon in a ß solid solution and cooling rapidly enough to preclude coarsening generally produced a uniform dispersion of fine silicide particles, whereas annealing at temperatures near but below the ß transus produced relatively coarse silicide particles. Annealing in the limited a, plus 3 region produced a duplex coarse and fine silicide array. Several a-annealed specimens were examined by X-ray diffraction to determine the crystallographic identity of the precipitate phase. Copper Ka X-ray diffraction patterns of bulk specimens which contained 0.5 and 0.8 pct Si were virtually identical to that of the silicon-free Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr base alloy except for a slight shift in some of the high-angle diffraction lines. In the summer of 1877, the writer led a party of four young men from Cleveland, Ohio, by way of the Great Lakes, to Prince Arthur's Landing (now Port Arthur), at the northwest corner of Lake Superior, thence, via the Dawson route and side journeys, as far as Cross Lake. It was the original intention to pass down the Pigeon river to its mouth, but the loss of one member of the party for six days in the forest, added to other obstacles, made it necessary to turn back. A well-filled note-book, together with illustrative collections, were sunk beyond recovery at the head of the Maligne rapids by the breaking of a tow-line, and two of our number (including myself) narrowly escaped drowning. I had, probably, obtained information of considerable economic value, but the necessity of travelling nearly 125 miles for provisions (excepting a meagre supply kindly furnished us by a Canadian government gang whom we fortunately met), rendered further note-taking impossible. Until now, such results of this expedition as could be recorded . from memory have gone unpublished, because of my inability to make them serve any useful purpose. The trip of the Institute to Vermilion Lake, only a few miles south and east of our turning point, gives some little excuse for presenting the following lines at this time. The ridge back of Port Arthur, Ontario, which follows approximately the course of the Lake Superior shore line, brings up the slates and accompanying strata through which the silver and gold veins of that region have penetrated. The interior district, hack from the lake, may be briefly described as a glaciated area, having its general drainage less modified by erosion than by the original structure. This statement, however, must be somewhat qualified with reference to minor details, which all bear the unmistakable impress of the ice-flow and its recession. In many respects there is much in this tract to remind one of the Sault Ste. Marie topography, excepting that the granitic character of the rocks is here largely replaced by fissile strata. Recent developments related to petroleum engineering discussed in this paper are: 1. Drilling wells in with oil or the use of chemical compounds or (Imud solvents" for removing rotary mud from wells in order to increase or make possible oil production. 2. Comparison of results of electrical logging methods in locating water, as shown in a recent test on a well in the Los Angeles Basin. 3. A new method for logging formations through casing, known as the Stratagraph. Drilling Wells in with Oil or the Use of Chemical Compounds or Mud Solvents During the time that the California fields showed high gas pressures, the pressure of the gas within the formation was sufficiently great to break down the mud wall or cake formed while the well was drilling. That this did not always occur was demonstrated by the fact that in some of the older fields new wells sometimes had substantially higher initial productions than other wells near by. The explanation seemed to be that some sands were mudded off in the original drilling. Their pressure was then not great enough to break down the mud wall in competition with the higher pressure of the sands, but the situation reversed itself so that a later well benefited by the pressure in these originally weaker sands. As time passed, in wells deeper than 5000 ft. the difficulty of bringing wells on production became more pronounced. This led to a hunt for substitutes, of which a number have been tried. The one that has proved most successful in our experience at Ventura is known as the Nobs solvent. At well No. 1 of the Associated-Ventura Land & Water Co. when it was recompleted in February 1936, about 10 days were spent in trying to bring the well in in the regular manner, but only about 113 bbl. of water could be swabbed from the well, and even this quantity decreased as time passed. The peculiar property of the lode-stone has been known for many centuries. It was very early observed that, by contact with it, iron is magnetized; and it is needless to dwell here upon the history allied to this discovery, now constituting the wonderful science of magnetism. Deposits of magnetic ore are distributed all over the world. The ore is sometimes very rich and comparatively free from gangue, sometimes sparsely disseminated in the native rock. These bodies of lean ore often cover large areas. Modern ingenuity has utilized the principle of the magrtet, originally derived from the ore itself, and really belonging to the time of Plato and Theophrastus, to separate the magnetic ore-particles from the rock which has previously been crushed. This process recovers the ore in the state of a concentrate very rich in iron and, in some cases, desirable for Bessemer purposes. The magnetic separator is no longer a novelty. It was only at the last meeting of the Institute in New York, that Messrs. Birkinbine and Edison (Trans., xvii., 728) and Mr. Robert Cook (Ib., 599) described some of' the principal designs of apparatus in use. E. S. Dana classifies the natural magnetic minerals in the following order: magnetite, pyrrhotite, franklinite, almandite and minerals " containing considerable FeO." Of these, ferroso-ferric oxide, or magnetite, is the type. The proportionate amount of ferrous oxide essential to magnetize the compound, is not established. Ferrous oxide appears to be the only magnetic oxide of iron. Tissandier (Compt. Rend., lxxiv., 531) produced ferrous oxide in the anhydrous state, by the action of carbon dioxide on pure iron at a red heat, according to the equation : Fe + CO2 = FeO + CO. This is black, crystalline and magnetic. Heated to redness in the air, it is converted into Fe3O4. Sidot (Compt. Rend., lxvii., 175) has also produced an oxide exhibiting magnetic polarity, by heating ferric oxide to a temperature

The year 1934 saw a very thorough and intensive search for oil in Italy, both by the Government-subsidized company, the A.G.I.P., and by the few smaller operating companies. Approximately two-thirds of the exploration work, however, has been done in the Province of Emilia (northern Italy). The A.G.I.P. has been particularly active in the Emilia district and has sunk several rotary holes between Voghera and Ferrara on structures located by geophysical means in the Po Valley. Only insignificant amounts of oil have shown up in these tests to date but gas has been found in fair quantities, and apparently the company is not yet prepared to abandon its search in this part of the country without further effort. In Central Italy, the same company has put down four tests with cable tools and of these two were "dry holes" and the other two found only traces of oil. The A:G.I.P. also sank two wells in southern Italy and it is believed that in these the indications were sufficiently encouraging for the exploration work to be continued. No serious drilling has yet been done in Sicily by the A.G.I.P. or any other company. The annual subsidy granted to the A.G.I.P. by the Government for the duration of its five-year plan has been considerably reduced for 1935 and this may interfere with the completion of the coming year's program in all its details. The Società Petrolifera Italians, which is the chief producing company in the country, has continued the development of its two fields, Salsomaggiore and Vallezza, and at the same time has intensified its program of exploration. Rotary machinery has been introduced and is undergoing a thorough trial, and prospects of finding new pools at greater depths are considered good. The charcoal adsorption plant at Vallezza has operated satisfactorily throughout the year and has produced nearly 3000 bbl. of high-grade gasoline. Besides the exploration well at Rile dell'Olio, which is still drilling, another wildcat test has been started at Torre-di-Traversetolo. All operations of this company are confined to the district of Emilia. The Società Petroli d'Italia has continued to operate the old fields of Montechino, Gratera and Velleja, and has a well now exploring at greater depths in that general area. High-purity tellurium oJ semiconductor grade may be prepared by a combination of electrowinning from tellurium oxide, electrorefining and controlled atmosphere melting, as detailed in the paper. SEMICONDUCTOR devices such as transistors and rectifiers depend upon extremely pure forms of silicon, germanium, and selenium. Although tellurium is chemically related to these elements, it has not been studied as a semiconductor because commercial forms are too impure. Highly purified tellurium would be an interesting starting point for a study of its solid-state characteristics. Tellurium shows a greater electrical conductivity in the direction of the helices or chains forming the crystals than at right angles to the chains, and thus is a semiconductor. Unlike selenium, the conductivity is only slightly increased by exposure to light. Impurities such as Ag, Cu, Au, Fe, Sn, As, Sb, Bi, Br, and I provide accepters and make extrinsic tellurium of the P type. So far, however, no elements have been found which, when introduced, would act as donors. Small amounts of tellurium dioxide enormously increase the thermoelectric power. Many extremely pure metals have been made by electrolytic refining or electrowinning procedures. Tellurium forms compounds in a number of valences, as indicated in Table I. The physical properties given in Table II do not show any unusual conditions which would interfere with the formation of elec- trodes, or the deposition of the metal on a cathode. Tellurium dioxide could be obtained in relatively high purities of 98 pct TeO2 or better at reasonable prices. Tellurium dioxide is soluble in caustic to form tellurites, which are conductive, ionizable, and from which tellurium metal may be deposited at a cathode. Preliminary solubility tests to saturation of tellurium dioxide in approximately 10 pct sodium hydroxide gave the results of Table III. The temperature range is a practical one for electroplating. Discussion of the paper of SIDNEY POWERS and ALFRED C. LANE, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 535 to 548. N. L. BOWEN, Washington, D. C. (communication to the Secretary*). -This detailed study and. complete demonstration of differentiation as a result of the sinking of crystals has a great general significance in petrogenesis. If this action can be demonstrated in an effusive body, even though a very thick one, how can one doubt its possibility in large intrusive bodies? The authors speak of the sinking of augite and the rising of plagioclase but I should consider that they should depend entirely on the former action to obtain their results. It is true that in my experiments, to which the authors refer, a floating of crystals was in one case obtained, viz., in the case of tridymite crystals, but it must be remembered that tridymite has an exceptionally low density. Plagioclase crystals, on the other hand, are of nearly the same density as basaltic liquid. Under magmatic conditions they might be a little heavier than the liquid or a little lighter, we do not know which, but the margin would be exceedingly small and any motion resulting, whether upward or downward, would be correspondingly small in the usual case. For this reason I should think that the sinking of pyroxene should be considered probably the sole factor in producing the observed result, for which purpose it appears to be entirely adequate. The measurements of grain have also a certain significance in this connection. In the experiments referred to a difference of grain was obtained in different parts of the charge, which was entirely independent of the rate of cooling but connected with the fact that a sinking crystal does not depend entirely upon diffusion for the collection of its material from the surrounding liquid. The crystals which sank a considerable distance were therefore exceptionally large. Now in the Cape Spencer flow the augite crystals are normally (top and bottom) somewhat smaller than the plagioclase crystals, but in the layer somewhat below the middle,

The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. History of Centrifugal Application It is not surprising, therefore, that many attempts were made to improve upon the results obtained by cold settling. George H. A high degree of accuracy is often required in mine-surveying, in order that expensive mining work may not be misdirected. The making of underground connections by drifts or shafts located as the result of surveys presents a crucial test of correctness not usually involved in any other class of surveying. In view of these considerations, the present notes and description of a survey made in June, 1890, for the San Francisco shaft of the New Almaden quicksilver-mines, may be of interest to members of the Institute who are surveyors. The purpose of this survey was to locate on the surface a vertical 2-compartment shaft (3.5 by 7 ft.), to connect with another vertical shaft, of practically the same size, which had been sunk a number of years before from an adit-level about 240 ft. vertically below the surface, to a deeper, so-called 600-ft. level. It will be seen, of course, that the most important matter was to secure an exact coincidence in vertical line, so that the resulting continuous vertical shaft from the surface should have no offset or irregularity at the point of junction between its two parts. The levels were of less importance; but, as the hoisting-works were to be placed in position and the new shaft permanently timbered from the start, its correct alignment was an essential requirement. The important features of the work, therefore, were the methods used in determining with certainty : 1. That the shaft was located in the right place in a general way; 2. That the ordinary inaccuracies of linear and angular measurements were so reduced as to insure correctness of location within certain defined and allowable limits. Instruments.—Thc instruments used were: a Buff and Berger transit-theodolite, with a 6-in. horizontal plate, reading to 10 seconds; a Heller and Brightly Y-level; a Chestermán steel tape, graduated in tenths and hundredths of a foot; and New York leveling-rods, graduated to thousandths of a foot.

THE use of coal-dust fired reverberatory furnaces, or indeed of reverberatory furnaces of any description, was for the Canadian Copper Co. a matter of necessity, and not of choice. For 20 years smelting had been done in blast furnaces alone, and with the Herreshoff furnaces used prior to 1904 there was no trouble in treating fine ores. But little flue dust was produced, and this, following the time-honored custom, was wetted down and put back with the charge. Whether the flue dust really smelted, or whether it was worn out by being chased around in a circle, was a problem that troubled no one. With the installation of modern blast furnaces and high-pressure blowing engines, in 1904, flue dust commenced to assert itself. Evidently more dust was made than could be smelted, but so many vital problems engaged our attention at that time that this minor question was pushed to one side. In 1906, the details of blast-furnace smelting and the conversion of matte had been worked out to a satisfactory conclusion, and the ever-increasing piles of flue dust and fine ore on the stock yard demanded serious consideration. Numerous experiments in sintering, briquetting, mixing with converter slag, forming blocks of flue dust with green-ore fines and cement, and so on, were undertaken. None of these showed much promise. Our problem, was still further complicated by the question of treating converter slag. The ore was basic, the slag was not needed as a furnace flux, and it was felt that under these conditions the old method of pouring slag in molds and resmelting in the blast furnace was an unnecessary expense. If the converter slag could be settled in basic-lined reverberatory furnaces, in which at the same time flue dust and green-ore fines could be smelted, two problems might thus be solved.

Interest in the corrosion problem seems to continue without abatement and is bringing practical results. At least four important conferences on this subject have been held during the last 5 months. Those interested in steel-frame structures are taking steps to study vulnerable points on account of the failure of some minor parts in certain buildings after 35 years of service. The steam power-plant group, including the railroads, realize the importance of a better knowledge of corrosion, especially under modern high-temperature boiler operations. The chemical and refrigerating industries have already conducted a systematic study of depreciation of metals by corrosion, for which they have spent considerable money and time during the last 2 years with encouraging results. More has probably been done to control corrosion in the atmosphere and in closed water systems, because the work on these phases of the problem started over 15 years ago and the important factors are now fairly well understood. As a result of all this work, there is now little excuse for corrosion in water conduits, recirculating condensers and cooling systems, since economical means of prevention have been worked out to meet nearly all situations where such corrosion occurs. The entire Baltimore water supply was treated with lime at a cost of only 35 c. per million gallons and the rate of attack on the pipes has been reduced to not over 20 per cent. of what it was before the treatment. Yearly damage to water mains in Baltimore is estimated at $300,000, and in New York City at $5,000,000, not including damage to water conduits in buildings. In some cities corrosion is now recognized by water works' engineers as a major problem. In the oil industry, there are evidently three general classes of corrosion, relating to: (I) Production, (2) transportation, and (3) refining. (1) Production.—Some fields, those of California for example, have little corrosion trouble in the wells. In others this is a major problem and should be a strong incentive to the development of more resistant metals at a reasonable cost. E. G. The mixing of fine ores with fuel and burning under induced draft is called sintering in iron-ore practice and either sintering or roasting in copper and lead metallurgy. The first development of sintering was the Huntington-Heberlein process, in which fine sulfide ores mixed with fuel were charged into a pot and burned under the action of an upcast current of air introduced at the bottom of the pot. Modern development has resulted in two types of machine; the continuous Dwight-Lloyd machine, which consists of heat-resisting grates and a moving beltlike type of hearth constructed of metal, in which air is drawn downward through the bed, and the stationary Greenawalt batch process, which operates in the same manner as the Dwight-Lloyd except that the hearth is stationary. The recent rapid increase in the use of sintering has been the result of two great advances in metallurgical process—flotation and the treatment of flue dust. The Dwight-Lloyd machine is used in many plants for agglomerating flotation concentrates and at the same time reducing the sulfur content to furnace requirements and it has become standard practice to treat iron blast-furnace flue dust by either the Greenawalt or Dwight-Lloyd machine, so that it can be recharged into the furnace. The mining of low-grade magnetite iron deposits and their beneficiat-ing by grinding and magnetic separation resulted in a fine concentrate extremely detrimental to blast-furnace practice. These concentrates are sintered and made into ideal material for blast-furnace use. Incidentally, coke savings of about 400 lb. per ton of pig are reported. Sintering at Evergreen Plant The application to limonitic iron ores is the most recent development of the sintering process. The first plant in the Lake Superior region was erected by the Minnesota Sintering Co., a subsidiary of the Evergreen Mining Co., at Ironton, Minn., in 1924. ALL of the prospects that later became mines in the Ducktown district were discovered prior to 1854, and most of them were exploited before the turn of the century. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the exploration and current development of the Boyd mine, discovered in 1853. It is in the heart of the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee, and is being developed by the Tennessee Copper Co. GEOLOGY The geology of the district has been fully described in many papers. Probably the most complete description is that of Emmons and Laney.I The rocks of the district are considered to be of Lower Cambrian age and are a part of the Great Smoky formation, consisting mainly of interbedded graywacke and mica schist, in which the ore deposits occur. The ore bodies are included in an area of about 6 sq. miles, 2 miles wide and 3 miles long striking N. 45° E., and may be grouped into three general lode systems. The northeast system, including the East Tennessee, London and Burra Burra ore bodies, and the southeast group, comprising the Polk County, Mary and Calloway deposits, are all characterized by relatively high copper values. The ores of the central system, which includes the Eureka, Boyd, Old Tennessee and Cherokee ore bodies, are low in copper and high in total sulphide content. Boyd mine lies roughly halfway between the Old Tennessee and Eureka ore bodies [ ] and 2500 ft. in the hanging wall of the Burra Burra mine (Fig. 1). The heat treatment of the bronze composed of 88 per cent. copper, 10 per cent. tin, and 2 per cent. zinc, has been investigated by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose,' and also by the U. S. Bureau of Standards.2 The results obtained by H. S. and J. G. S. Primrose on dry-sand castings subjected to reheating followed by air cooling, or by quenching in water, are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The values for tensile strength have been converted from tons per square inch to pounds per square inch. Figs. 3 and 4, have been plotted from values obtained by the Bureau of Standards on material of the same composition and treatment. Both investigations show that the ductility of the cast bronze is improved by heating to 700' C. and cooling in air, the strength not being impaired by this treatment. They are not in agreement, howevcr, as to the effect of quenching, Messrs. Primrose reporting a decrease, and the Bureau of Standards an increase, in both strength and ductility when the cast bronze is heated to 600' or 700' C. and quenched. The early history of the mining and metallurgical industries of Pennsylvania is so intimately associated with the section of the State in which we meet, that a brief resume of a few of the important historical facts, and a reference to some of the more modern enterprises, in which members of the Institute have been largely concerned, seem appropriate to this occasion. It is just two hundred years since the publication of the earliest mention of the manufacture of iron in Pennsylvania. What kind of iron this was, or where or by whom it was produced, is uncertain. The only record of it is the following verse, quoted in the admirable work of Mr. James M. Swank,* from a poem published in 1692: " A certain place here is, where some begun To try some Mettle, and have made it run, Wherein was Iron absolutely found, At once was known about some Forty Pound." One who stood one hundred and seventy years ago on the summit of this Neversink Mountain † (had the atmospheric conditions been favorable, and the timber somewhat removed) might have noticed in the daytime the smoke, or at night the reflection, from the fires of the first successful Pennsylvania iron enterprises, scarcely 15 miles to the south, viz.: Rutter's bloomary forge, built in 1716, and the Colebrookdale blast-furnace erected in 1720, respectively 3 and 8 miles distant from Pottstown. Here the pioneers of iron production in the State which has so long led, and still leads all others in this manufacture, had their trials and successes ; and it may be a satisfaction to some who bewail a present depression in trade, and the low prices now ruling, to recall the fact that in 1731 pig-iron is reported to have been sold ''in large quantities" at the Colebrook-

BecauSe the rich La Colorada orebody of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co. does not outcrop at surface, after its discovery (by churn drill) and before mining was begun, a large amount of development work was done to learn the shape and extent of the ore and to provide for economic and effective mining. As these openings progressed, the actual shape of the orebody became known and with this knowledge came the realization that mining this rich and unusual deposit without loss of ore or danger to workmen presented several difficult problems. This paper will describe one of these problems; namely, the handling of an inverted cone-shaped core of barren rock, on the periphery of and below which the ore occurred. It mas clear that as the ore was mined out from around and under this inverted cone of rock, weighing about 3,000,000 tons, it would hang over the workings, held suspended only by its own tensile strength and threatening to crash into the stapes below with disastrous results to men and mine. The method of mining developed during the years 1928,1929 and 1930 anticipated and provided for the eventual collapse of this core of rock. In November 1936 the core settled down gradually on the edges of the stopes, descending a total of about 50 ft. vertically. The men in the stopes had ample warning and no lives were endangered. There were no air blasts in the mine. The core broke loose from its top support at the 500-ft. level along old fracture planes and evidently is crushed to the ninth level. Movement was of short duration; the following shift went to work in the stopes as usual. No ore was lost. Geological Structure The shape of the orebody is illustrated in Fig. 1. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr Hartman says (p. 4 of the pamphlet) that the penetration of air into the crucible of the blast-furnace " is, of course, a function of the diameter of the nozzle." To this I would emphatically take exception. Fig. 1 represents a vertical ideal section of tuyere, cruciblewalls and charge, immediately at the tuyere, in which the currents of air are represented, both in quantity and in direction, by the tortuous black-lines emanating from the nozzle-opening and passing through channels of the least resistance. As an electric current, flowing by various conductors to a common point, is carried in quantity inversely as the resistance of those conductors, so here the air ramifies through the most open cavities or channels, relatively little of it passing where the resistance due to fine materials is great. This figure represents the course of currents in the vertical plane only. As a matter of fact, they pass away in every plane, as opportunity offers. The effect of blocking or decreasing the area of the nozzleopening would certainly only decrease the quantity of air entering by that particular tuyere, without assisting penetration. The large channels (b, b, Fig. 1, for example) would still carry the larger part of the air, while again the smaller channels (a, a, a) would continue small and take no larger percentage of the air than before. These channels momentarily change, however, with the slow descent of the coke. Further on (p. 5), Mr. Hartman describes the dispersive effect of a single lump of fuel. He has only to conceive the entire spaces before the tuyere-nozzles as filled with such lumps, in order to parallel the condition of affairs I have just explained. It is where the large pieces of the charge come down, that the mass is the most open, and the blast passes most freely. On the other hand, wherever the fine ore collects combustion proceeds slowly, because of the smaller supply of air. The

CERTAIN physical and chemical properties of copper are so intimately related that a change in variation of the physical properties indicates a certain chemical change. The standard specifications of copper of the American Society for Testing Materials are based upon physical characteristics with one exception, namely, the copper contents. The physical standard includes electrical properties, defects in the "set or casting," variation in dimensions, weight, etc. Paragraph 4 of the specifications states, " Wire bars, cakes, slabs and billets shall be substantially free from ;shrink holes, cold sets, pits, sloppy edges, concave tops, and similar defects in set or casting." Shrink holes and concave tops indicate both physical and metallurgical defects; cold sets, sloppy edges, etc., indicate physical defects only; small pit holes may be indicative of either or both physical and metallurgical defects, depending on conditions under which they originated. To the refiner, a copper casting, no matter how made, is known as a "shape," irrespective of whether it is wire bar, ingot, cake, slab, billet, etc. As practically all shapes are cast in an open mold, that is a mold without cope, the surface of the shape cools in contact with the atmosphere and has a coating of oxide. Certain phenomena of the surface indicate the adaptability of the metal for forging or rolling. The writer believes that it is much simpler to produce shapes that are metallurgically correct than those that are mechanically satisfactory. When copper is to be rolled into thin sheets or drawn into very fine wire, the slightest physical defect becomes evident. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to, consider every characteristic of the shape and ascertain the physical and chemical relationship. Pitch and Set.-The appearance of the surface of the copper when cooled is considered as to its "pitch," or the general contour of the surface of the shape (which may vary from a concave to a convex); and the "set," or the detail appearance of the surface of the shape (the wave-like struc-

As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground sup- port were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah's 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased, roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring excessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau's reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle, having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded.

IN the Parkes process of extracting precious metals from lead, zinc is added to the molten lead containing gold, silver, copper, and, some antimony. These metals, with the exception of antimony, form an alloy with the zinc by reason of their greater affinity for it than for the lead, and this alloy, being lighter than lead, rises to the top, carrying the precious metals with it, whence it can be removed by skimming. These skimmings are further treated for the separation of the zinc therefrom, and the recovery of the precious metals, the zinc being driven off by heat and again used for another operation. In addition to the zinc that combines with the silver, etc., a certain amount is necessary to saturate the lead, and it is therefore necessary to treat the desilverized lead to free it from this residual zinc. To do this it is heated again in a reverberatory furnace and air or steam is blown through it. This oxidizes the zinc together with a small amount of lead and antimony, leaving the lead free from zinc and antimony, and forming oxides of these metals, which rise to the. top and are skimmed off. This process relates to the separation of the metals in these oxides or skimmings. The skimmings are cooled, crushed, and mixed with carbonate of soda and pulverized oil coke. The mixture is heated in a reverberatory furnace on a bath of lead, to about 1,000°C. The metals are reduced by the coke, the lead and antimony go into the lead bath, while the zinc is volatilized and burned to oxide. This impure oxide is at the present time treated at Omaha by the Hall process of electrical precipitation, making a very pure metallic zinc. It can also be very easily refined by the old Schnabel process of using ammonia and carbon dioxide as a solvent. It seen-is to be in an ideal form for this purpose, and very few changes from the original method are required to obtain the zinc oxide practically C. P., leaving the lead and antimony as residues.
