Introduction FMC's Paradise Peak gold mine was discovered by staff geologists in July 1983. Located south of Gabbs, in western Nevada, the deposit contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of ore grading at 3.6 g/t (0.105 oz per st) of gold and 129 g/t (3.75 oz per st) silver. It is estimated that the ore contains 34 t (1.1 million oz) of recoverable gold and 933 t (30 million oz) of recoverable silver. The 3.6 kt/d (4000 stpd) mill began operation April 14, 1986, just 18 months after Davy McKee completed a feasibility study and construction, and two-and-a-months ahead of schedule. It also came in about 10% under budget at a cost of about $100 million. Crushing Run-of-mine ore is delivered from the mine in 45-t (50-st) haul trucks to a 272-kt (300,000-st) capacity open air stockpile. Ore is reclaimed using 5 m3 (7 cu yd) front-end loaders that feed a 91-t (100-st) hopper equipped with a 610- x 610-mm (24- x 24-in.) grizzly. A 1.4- x 11-m (54-in. x 35-ft) apron feeder delivers ore from the hopper by way of a vibrating grizzly screen with 127 mm (5 in.) openings to a 1- x 1.3-m (43- x 51-in.) Rexnord jaw crusher. Crushed material is conveyed to a 1.8- x 4-m (6- x 14-ft) Link Belt vibrating screen equipped with a 50-mm (2-in.) manganese grizzly bar deck. Screen oversize is fed to a 1.7/0.6-m (5.5 ft) Rexnord standard cone crusher. Product from this crusher joins the -50 mm (-2 in.) screen undersize and is conveyed to a 136-t (150-st) surge bin. Three hydraulically driven belt feeders deliver ore from the ore bin to three 2 x 6 m (7 x 20 ft) Link Belt single-deck tertiary screens fitted with 6 x 25 mm (0.25 x 1 in.) slotted polyethylene screens. Screen undersize - -6 mm (-0.25 in.) rock - is conveyed to a 3.6-kt (4000-st) ore storage bin. Screen oversize is delivered by way of a conveyor to a 91-t (100-st) surge bin. From this bin, two belt feeders feed ore to two 1.7 m (66 in.) Rexnord Gyradisc crushers, which are in closed circuit with the tertiary screens. Design features include magnetic protection for tramp iron removal and sloping floors and pump sumps for ease of clean up. Dust scrubbers keep the working environment clean and in compliance with state dust emission regulations. Grinding Two 1 x 4.5 m (3.5 x 15 ft) belt feeders deliver ore from the fine ore bin to a conveyor belt that feeds it to the 5 x 7 m (16 x 22 ft) Allis-Chalmers ball mill. The conveyor belt is equipped with a Merrick weightometer. This controls feed rate to the ball mill by speed control on the hydraulic motors driving the feeders. The 2.6 MW (3500 hp) powered mill grinds 3.6 kt/a (4000 stpd) to an average grind of 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The mill is in closed circuit with four 660 mm (26 in.) Krebs cyclones. Three of these are normally in operation while one is a standby. Warman pumps feed the cyclones through a cyclone distribution manifold. The cyclone underflow returns to the ball mill, which has a 300% average circulating load. Mill discharge pH is 11, and that is obtained through pebble lime addition to the feed belt. Cyclone overflow is sampled using a Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampler. It then flows to a 27-m-diam (90-ft-diam) Eimco thickener. Thickener overflow is returned to the grinding circuit, while underflow at 50% solids is pumped to the leaching circuit. Grinding-circuit design features include a steeply sloped floor for ease of clean up, an open area over the pumps for maintenance accessibility, and a ball hopper with a self discharge bottom to speed ball addition. Other features include a mill liner handler and an air clutch that connects the mill motor to the mill.

For the past four years, the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has conducted a validation study of the CFD Fluent code, by comparing its results against mining-related benchmark experimental data provided by NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This particular study is dedicated to the effect of machine-mounted dust scrubbers on the performance of face ventilation systems using extended-cut mining with a blowing curtain.

Reasons for reexamining underground mining include: 1. The assurance that more deep deposits of useful minerals will be found. 2. The existence of deeply covered deposits of industrial minerals near large markets where quarries are becoming depleted or are lacking. 3. Surface property values, zoning and other limitations on open pit mining. 4. Expectation that underground space will be increasingly used for transportation, power plants, storage and similar purposes. 5. The improvements which have been made in underground mining. During the last three or four decades many changes and improvements have been made underground. All underground construction and mining has benefitted to some extent but the effect on the productivity of labor employed with some methods- has changed little and the use of these methods has declined. Productivity of labor in other methods has increased substantially. The relative usefulness of mining methods has changed and a vital industry, bituminous coal, has been returned to health. In this paper, consideration is limited to nine methods used with high productivity during the period under review. These methods are not necessarily better than others but they may be considered the prime methods in the sense that, in our economy, many, low grade ores, coal and the principal industrial minerals could hardly be produced by less productive means.2 Although most of the examples cited are from mining as such., the first four methods discussed can be used for the construction of stable excavations of various' shapes in sound rock.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. The efficiency of a coal mine ventilation circuit is usually measured by the ratio of the sum of the face quantities divided by the quantity supplied by the fans. Other types of systems use the power delivered to the power supplied to measure efficiency. This paper argues the case that the current measure may be inadequate and that by also looking at the power ratio, ventilation may be better managed. Problems associated with failing ventilation systems would be highlighted earlier so that crisis management could be avoided.

Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.

I. INTRODUCTION The challenge of moving the use of nuclear energy from military to civilian use was first issued by President Dwight Eisenhower in his December 8, 1953 “Atoms for Peace” speech delivered at the United Nations. Eisenhower stated: “The United States knows that if the fearful trend of atomic military build up can be reversed, this greatest of destructive forces can be developed into a great boon, for the benefit of all mankind. * * * * The more important responsibility of this Atomic Energy Agency would be to devise methods whereby this fissionable material would be allocated to serve the peaceful pursuits of mankind. Experts would be mobilized to apply atomic energy to the needs of agriculture, medicine, and other peaceful activities. A special purpose would be to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Atomic Energy Commission promoted the use of nuclear power as the answer to our nation’s energy problems. Nuclear power would provide energy too cheap to meter. The utility industry responded and numerous plants were planned with over one hundred constructed from the 1970’s to the 1990’s. Capital costs for nuclear power plants escalated due to permitting changes and public opposition, and the Three Mile Island incident caused new nuclear plant construction to cease. Today, we once again are experiencing a nuclear renaissance. Concerns over global warming and rapid projected increases in the demand for electricity have caused many nations to begin construction of new nuclear fleets. The price of uranium to fuel these reactors, which had dropped to an historical low of $7.10 in 2001, has surged to $56.00 as of October 2006. This paper will review some of the social, environmental, and government issues that are all playing a role in the resurgence of the nuclear fuel industry.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

Newmont Mining Corporation and Barrick Goldstrike Mines, Inc. concluded an exchange of land and reserves in an agreement signed May 3, 1999.This exchange of assets allowed Newmont to develop the Deep Post underground mine from within Barrick’s Betze-Post open pit, thus reducing capital expenditures, lowering operating costs, and advancing the production schedule by nearly three years. Based on previous experience, Newmont is confident that the Deep Post underground mine can be successfully developed and operated within a large, active, open pit mine. The project also faces difficult geotechnical conditions including weak ground, scattered pockets of groundwater, and elevated rock temperatures.

Three drill-blast cycles of 3.1 m advance achieved in one working shift of 7.5 hours at the Holsfjorden Tunnel project in Norway. The tunnel, 5235 m long, with a cross section of 8.6 m2, was completed several months ahead of schedule. This remarkable performance was achieved by a crew of 16 men, using machines specially designed for small tunnel excavation. The integration of drilling and charging into one unit, mucking and transport in another, reduced non-productive time considerably. The average cycle time of 140 min made it possible to complete three rounds in one 7.5 hours shift.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

Energy Metals Corp. (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin. The JAB property is one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope uranium project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report was completed for the JAB property. This report estimated total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 1.6 kt (3,555,022 lbs) U3O8 contained in 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st) at an average grade of 0.073 percent U3O8 at a 0.25 grade times thickness (GT) cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42° 14’ North and Longitude 108° 00’ West (Fig. 1). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming state mineral leases com-prising approximately 850 hm2 (2,100 acres).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) uses light-scattering dust monitors (nephelometers) in its research to develop dust controls to reduce respirable silica dust overexposures in miners. Recently, the model 1500-pDR, an active nephelometer, was introduced by Thermo Scientific. Testing was completed to ensure compatibility with the metal/nonmetal mine dust personal sampling unit (M/NMDPSU). Results of testing demonstrated that gravimetric concentrations measured from the 1500-pDR are comparable to the gravimetric concentrations measured using the M/NMDPSU, without need for correction, under commonly observed dust loading conditions.

The paper presents background information including data on diesel exhaust pollutants, amounts produced and standards, a desscription of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques and a review of portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the Experimental Mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the Mine Air Monitoring Lab (MAML), the portable instruments and the production mines used.

Komatsu America International has introduced two new hydraulic excavators. They can work in congested and confined areas. The tight tail swing radius of the PC128US-2 and PC22-8USLC-2 enables the excavators to minimize the work space. The units can operate in confined work settings that are inaccessible or counterproductive to traditional machines. Even the door is designed for tight working conditions. A convex door slides open along the exterior curve of the cab, rather than swinging out on hinges past tracks. And the excavators’ tight tail swing design allows them to load within the track width of the machine.

In fluctuating airflow, continuous air velocity recording is the most reliable method of air velocity measurement. It allows for fast recognition of changes and the calculation of long-term averages. Also, it enables the mine operator to identify when the airflow has decreased to a point requiring action. Using ultrasonic anemometers provides an accurate option for continuous air velocity monitoring. This paper provides information about the effect of common obstructions in underground mining on air velocity readings. Stationary and moving obstructions are used to represent workers and equipment that would cause discrepancies in measured airflow. Also, it is important to know how large of a sample size is required to ensure reasonable accuracy of results. Statistical analysis is used to evaluate the required sample size. The sampling procedure is further studied by comparing two different sample rates. The results show that obstructions provide noticeable differences in air velocity measurements. Also, movement of obstructions can be recognized from changes in results. Surprisingly small sample sizes provide reliable air velocity information. Standard sample rates are found to be suitable for the underground environment.

Many different types of mobile equipment used in surface coal mining utilize enclosed cabs to protect equipment operators. The overburden removal process is extremely dusty and can cause excessive exposure to respirable dust, especially crystalline silica. After equipment is used for years, many components of the enclosure deteriorate and its effectiveness is greatly reduced. This report discusses a cooperative research study performed on an Ingersoll Rand DM45E surface drill, retrofitted with a new Sigma pressurization and filtration system. Respirable dust concentrations were substantially reduced from 0.64 mg/m3 during pre-testing to 0.05 mg/m3 during post-testing with the new system, representing a 92% reduction in dust levels in the drill cab. This new system appears to be a very well-built and sturdy device, well-suited for the mining industry.

Nile sediment was collected as a waste from one of the water treatment plants in Cairo, and subjected to petrographical investigation and granulometric, chemical, and mineralogical analyses. It was expected to find diatomite in that sediment but it was a surprise to find that the diatomite content amounted to about 52.01% by volume in addition to quartz, orthoclase and clay minerals. The latter are represented by montmorillonite and illite minerals. The sediment is light gray in color, soft and has low density and high surface area, such density and surface area generally decrease with temperature. The sediment absorbs 317% of its weight in water. The diatomite skeletons are the main factor responsible for its high porosity producing microporosity and low density, and these particles are concentrated in the very fine silt size fraction (11x2µm). The common diatoms in such sediment include Cyclotella ocellata Pant, and Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs. It seems that this Nile diatomaceous sediment has many advantages over the fossil diatomite, such as Fayium diatomite in Egypt, with the absence of carbonate minerals that require grinding and calcination those cause destruction of the cellular structure and energy consumption. This Nile diatomaceous sediment can be processed using sequential classification to obtain diatomite concentrate of 88.8% grade at 90.6% recovery, and a middling product of 19.4% grade and 5.8% recovery. The suggested flow sheet is quite simple to produce diatomite product for different industries at a low cost. The unusual particulate structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an ideal mineral to be used as functional filler in a wide range of industries, and as catalyst carriers and insulating material. When science and the human spirit come together amazing things can happen. This was perhaps never more evident than through the events that unfolded during August and October in a remote desert in northern Chile. On Aug. 5, the main shaft of the San José copper and gold mine near Copiapó in Chile?s Atacama Region collapsed, leaving 33 miners trapped more than 624 m (2,000 ft) beneath the earth?s surface.
