Evidence of hydrothermal activity on two Mid-Atlantic Ridge oceanic core complexes (OCCs), at 13º30’N (the Semyenov 1 through 5 fields) and 13º20’N (the Irinovskoe field) (Fig. 1) were studied using CTD casts, dredges, TV-grabs and SP surveys during previous research cruises to these sites (Cherkashev et al., 2013, McLeod et al., 2009). In late 2013, the Semyenov and Irinovskoe fields were revisited, this time with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during the ODEMAR (Oceanic Detachments at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) cruise on the French research vessel "Pourqoui Pas ?". Here we present the first visual surveys and direct sampling of these vent sites. High-resolution (~2 m) bathymetry of the 13º30’N and 13º20’N OCCs and their associated vent fields was collected during 4 and 5 AUV dives, respectively, using the GEOMAR AUV "ABYSS" (Fig. 1). These surveys were flown between 70 m and 100 m above the seafloor, typically at a constant height to reduce vehicle movement. The AUV was equipped with Eh, turbidity, and temperature sensors in order to detect active hydrothermal venting. Over twenty ROV dives with the ROV "VICTOR 6000" allowed for the visual exploration of the OCCs and collection of 59 hydrothermal rock samples from the vent fields. As a result of these exploration activities, the first robust estimates of the size of the deposits, and the geologic controls on sulfide accumulation at these sites can be determined.

Dozer operators are frequently exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) during the execution of their work. Occupational exposure to WBV in Indian surface coal mines was evaluated by measuring vibration intensity and duration of exposure. A triaxial accelerometer was placed on the operator seat surface for taking the readings. Based on frequency-weighted root mean square acceleration equivalent to 8-hr shift duration, i.e., (A(8)) all dozer operators have exceeded an Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 0.5 m/s2 , and 90% of dozers did not exceed Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 . Based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV (8)), all dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75, but no dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 21 m/s1.75. Further, an epidemiological study was performed for identifying the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dozer operators. For the detailed study, 42 dozer operators and 22 controls were selected from 2 surface coal mines. The control group was not exposed to WBV. It was seen from the cross-sectional study that pain in the lower back was predominantly higher (83.33%) in the exposed group when compared with the control group (31.81%). Likewise, pain in the neck (47.61%), shoulder (42.85%), knees (42.85%), and ankle (11.90%) was higher in the exposed group than that of the control group (22.71%, 0%, 45.45%, and 4.54%). A significant observation among the exposed group was that there was degradation in the quality of life. The outcome of the study would assist in monitoring and mitigation of machinery-induced vibration diseases (MIVD) in India and generally applicable to most of the mechanized mines as well. However, comprehensive studies are still needed to enunciate the magnitude extent.

Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion- resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

The 6-m- (20-ft-) diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT3) has been completed. This article summarizes aspects of liner design and ad-dresses the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented. The Mill Creek Phase 3 tunnel (MCT-3) is expected to be completed this year. It is one of the largest tunneling projects undertaken by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to date. The tunnel horizon is situated within the Devonian Chagrin Shale rock formation at an average depth of 85 m (280 ft). The tunnel was excavated using a two-pass method. A full face, fully shielded, Robbins 7.2-m- (23.8-ft-) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) was used to excavate approximately 4,500 m (15,000 ft) of tunnel and facilitate installation of initial supports (first pass). The final lining (second pass) consists of 305-mm- (12-in.-) thick cast-in-place reinforced concrete and integral low flow channel. Seven shafts were constructed on the project. The excavation of the tunnel commenced at Shaft 14 and proceeded down grade to Shaft 9, the terminus shaft. Because of the presence of overbreak in the tunnel crown, measures were required to support the form and counteract the effects of buoyancy during concrete placement.

The Michigan DOT’s I‑75 Modernization Project, Segment 3, is a 30-year, $1.2 Billion design-build-finance-maintain project in Southeast Michigan. The scope includes building a nearly 4-mile long, 14.5-foot ID stormwater storage tunnel. The tunnel and pump station are being built concurrent with new roads and bridges, requiring multiple levels of design and construction coordination. Underground risks include the poten‑ tial for encountering granular soils, groundwater, and explosive gases. The new tunnel will be mined by a new open-face TBM and lined with a one-pass steel-fiber-reinforced precast concrete segmental lining. Shaft construction began in early 2020 and tunnel mining in July 2020.

"TBMs have been used in mining in decades past, but their use has been limited and sporadic, due to both perceived and actual application difficulties. With new technology and mounting success stories, this is changing. For both coal and metals mining, deep ore bodies require long access tunnels, and an efficient and economical method of reaching those deposits. Today, mining engineers are considering TBMs as part of the overall mine development plan. Planned TBM mine drifts are not only longer, but have more complicated trajectories. Mine development TBMs will have to cope with varying geology, potential for high water inflows, steep gradients, and high temperatures. TBM systems are being planned to cope with such difficulties. TBM systems will be considered and increasingly deployed for mine development, even if commodity prices remain low. TBMs can satisfy the need for increased productivity, better life of mine infrastructure, and safety. Effective conveyor systems are essential to support TBM operation in many mining applications. Many mine development tunnels are slopes, driven down at the steepest practical gradient to reach the deep ore body. Conveyors are often the only safe and effective way to haul the TBM muck form such tunnels. This paper will review the historical use of TBMs in mining, and will discuss the 2015 status of TBMs and conveyor systems in mining, and the special requirements and adaptable features needed in order to make efficient TBMs a reality in mines worldwide.HISTORICAL USE OF TBMS IN MINING APPLICATIONS The first successful hard rock TBM was invented in 1954. Dust surveys were conducted at six underground coal mines to determine if deep-cutting practices expose face workers to higher levels of respirable dust. The surveyed mines were able to successfully mine deep cuts without significantly increasing the dust exposures of face workers. In general, all of the selected mines exercised good dust control practices by maintaining water sprays, scrubber airflows, proper curtain setback distances and providing sufficient airflow to the active faces. For exhausting face ventilation, field data indicate that scrubber airflow is the most important factor for controlling dust. Data collected for this study indicate that 20-mesh screens should be cleaned for every 12.2 m (40 ft) of advance, because 22% of the deep cuts surveyed for this study experienced a 20% to 35% decrease in scrubber airflow over the course of the cut. For blowing face ventilation, field data and past research indicate that dust control is aided by maintaining a proper curtain-to-scrubber airflow ratio of 1.0 (measured before scrubber activation), as well as a curtain setback distance that allows the miner operator to stand at the mouth of the curtain for the entire cut. Dust levels on the bolting faces did not appear to be affected by the longer cycles associated with deep-cut mining when good ventilation practices were used.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

Mining engineers are ready to take a big step into a new field-oil mining. To understand the subject, one must look at the world's oil supply and demand as well as petroleum technology successes and failures. The US has an abundance of solid hydrocarbon and uranium energy resources, but 75% of its energy for industry, transportation, manufacturing, and space heating comes from liquid petroleum and natural gas. So there are increasing efforts to discover new oil reserves; today the number of drilling rigs operating in the US is at an all-time high. But with 80% of the world's wells already located in the US and Canada, good new exploration prospects are difficult to find. The cost of drilling deep new wells has also greatly increased. The US faced a similar situation in the early 1950s, when primary oil production declines began. During that time, the petroleum researcher introduced secondary recovery techniques such as water flooding and gas injection. This increased the average amount of extractable oil from discovered US reservoirs from 17% to 33%. Production soared and the world petroleum price remained stable until the end of the 1960s. Secondary recovery techniques were then supplemented by tertiary oil recovery technologies-increasing sweep efficiency with such things as CO2 injection-that are, so far, only partially successful in most petroleum fields. Even so, these technologies could raise cumulative recovery expectations to 35-38%. The "lost" oil in depleted US reservoirs equals 48 km3 (300 billion bbl) of conventional oil, or 12 times the current recoverable reserve base. At the present rate of US consumption-1 km3/a or 6 billion bbl/a-this is enough to run the US for 50 years without importing any oil. Moreover, there are 16-24 km3 (100-150 billion bbl) of as-yet unrecoverable heavy oil and tar sands in the US.

There are hundreds of passive treatment systems accepting mining influenced water (MIW) throughout the world. Some systems do not perform to design expectations while others, including volunteer systems, have successfully operated relatively unattended for decades. The primary reasons for this situation include the common misconceptions that (1) a “cookbook” approach to design is valid for a wide array of MIW chemistries and site conditions, and (2) low maintenance means “no maintenance.” Passive treatment systems for MIW are typically manmade ecosystems that are designed to handle a specific range of metal loading conditions and MIW geochemistry. Thus, when design conditions are exceeded, the suite of microbial to macroscopic ecosystems may be slow to recover or mature. This should be no surprise to designers. But when a particular system fails, it may be inappropriately attributed to the technology, not the design. This paper presents a standard “phased” design protocol that appears to work and provides examples of sub-par performance of selected passive treatment systems.

"Language barrier in a workplace affects workers’ productivity and safety. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) review the various approaches for breaking language barriers among miners; and (2) analyze the costs and benefits of these approaches, and make recommendations on the way forward. The authors achieve these objectives by reviewing the current approaches in breaking language barriers among miners. The review reveals that some of these approaches can be expensive with less benefits. Thus, it is concluded that mining companies should carefully select the optimal approach to break language barrier. INTRODUCTION Multi-national mining companies have expanded their operations into non-traditional mining destinations to grow and meet market expectations. For instance, Newmont Mining Corporation has about 14 operations and projects located in Africa, Asia, Australia and America (Newmont Mining Corporation Operations and Projects, 2015). Similarly, Freeport-McMoRan operates about 14 mines in North America, South America, Southern Asia, and Africa (Freeport-McMoRan Inc., 2015). Some mining companies have also attracted expatriate workers into their workforce. For example, Ma’aden, the Saudi Arabian mining company, in its 2013 annual report states that 34% of its total employees are expatriates (Ma'aden, 2013). Expatriates constitute a key source of skilled labor and facilitate skill transfer. The success of many international operations relies greatly on expatriate performance (Erbacher, D'Netto & Espana, 2006). Even companies that do not expand their operations into other foreign countries still have to deal with language barriers due to changing language demography of the country and the areas from which labor is sourced. For example, the language composition of the workforce and languages used in South African mines is diverse with miners proficient in Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and others to varying degrees (Research Focus (Pty) Ltd, 2011). As a result of these trends, most mines today operate with a multinational workforce. This means cultural differences, including language barriers, exist among the miners. Marschan-Piekkari, Welch and Welch (1999) emphasize the fact that language problems become prominent as companies internationalize and grow their operations into more countries. According to a survey by Forbes, language barrier affects operations. For example, business owners acknowledge that language proficiency may promote a safer work environment (Rubin, 2011). A research has shown that language and cultural barriers in a workplace contributes to reducing workers’ productivity, increasing accidents, and hurts employers’ ability to recruit, hire and retain workers (Morris, 2002). Hence, mines are making efforts to break language barriers in their operating environments. Ma’aden, for instance reported in 2013 that 1,506 of its employees received training in English as a second language (Ma'aden, 2013)."

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

Exiting WW2, the potential of nitrates and hydrogen peroxide for application as industrial explosives both became known. The technology stream advanced the development and uptake of nitrate-based explosives to the point that they are the current global standard for blasting. Recently environmental issues are influencing the strategic agenda of extractive industries. The mid-2010s saw renewed interest in hydrogen peroxide explosives to eliminate NOx fume. Carbon reduction initiatives in the 2020s provided additional impetus to investigate hydrogen peroxide-based explosives. Hypex Bio is at the forefront of developing and delivering bulk gas sensitized Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) for blasting. HPE consists of hydrogen peroxide along with smaller amounts of fuel and emulsifier. The consistency of HPE is similar to industry- standard nitrate-based emulsions. It is compatible with existing priming and initiation systems. HPE does not contain nitrates and thereby does not produce post blast nitrous oxide fumes nor discharge of nitrates or ammonia to mine water. Importantly, HPE contributes to reduction in total carbon emissions as compared to nitrate-based explosives.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) development continues to take on not only larger diameters, but also more difficult ground conditions. Ground conditions consisting of unstable faces with water pressures up to 15 bar have required innovative design approaches. A systems approach has been required to produce tunneling machines that can safely excavate the tunnel in an efficient, cost-effective manner that stresses production and labor saving approaches. This article reviews the current design developments and present recent projects where these most recent principles have been applied. The world?s growing population and rapidly proceeding urbanization are boosting an enormous demand for new and high-capacity infrastructures to secure the mobility of goods and people. Densely populated areas face the challenge of providing efficient traffic infrastructure such as a modern public transport system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are essential. Last but not least, are supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes. All of these projects are as demanding and are characterized by a tight time schedule. In this context, the demand for efficient tunnels for traffic and utility lines is increasing, as new infrastructures often leads underground because of limited space above ground. Also, tunnels are the obvious choice to cross natural barriers like mountain ranges. To handle the complex and variable geological conditions and other constraints, such as low overburden, high water pressure or long tunnel drives while facing increasing demand of a quick completion of a project, mechanized tunneling sets standards regarding safety, profitability and environmental protection in traffic tunneling projects as well as in the trenchless construction of utility tunnels. Different machine types and working principles have been developed to master various geological and hydrogeological requirements. Continuous activity in research and development leads to constant improvement of the mechanized tunneling process.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

A few years ago, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Unimin Corporation developed a clothes cleaning system that is able to quickly, effectively, and safely remove dust from a worker?s clothing without dust exposure to the worker, the work environment, or co-workers during the cleaning process. To perform the process, a worker enters a cleaning booth and activates an air spray manifold which blows the dust from the worker?s clothing. Since the cleaning booth is under negative pressure, all the dust and product removed are contained. In the original design, this dust-laden air was exhausted to a dust collector system. However, since most operations do not have excess dust collector capacity, it was decided to determine an alternative method to provide for a stand-alone cleaning system. This was achieved by ducting the exhaust outside the plant and into the atmosphere. This technique was recently tested and shown to be a viable method to provide for a stand-alone clothes cleaning system.

The Mantos Blancos copper-silver district, a major copper-producing area since 1961, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn about 45 kilometers northeast of the northern Chile port city of Antofagasta, as shown in Figure 1. Copper oxide minerals occurring as atacamite (Cu C1(OH)3) and chrysocolla (copper silicate-hydrate) were discovered in the district in the early 1900's (Knobler and Joseph, 1962). The mine is situated in the northern Atacama Desert, one of the most arid regions on earth, and presently receives less than 1 cm per year of precipitation. The extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert is thought to have prevailed since at least Middle Miocene time (Mortimer et al., 1978) when development of important supervene copper enrichment was slowed in many areas of northern Chile (e.g., Chuquicamata, Exotica). Despite the paucity of precipitation, landform development is mature, with large alluvial fans and alluvial-filled valleys covering much of the region. In addition, the aridity and presence of salts have led to the formation of a sub-surface cementing of alluvium and colluvium by halite-rich caliche ranging from a few centimeters to over 3 meters in thickness. These factors, resulting in poor outcrop exposure, make even reconnaissance mapping difficult.

"In Europe, and therefore in Hungary opening a new mine is harder and harder. Depletion of mines, unfavourable legal and economic changes, and growing public concerns are the main reasons. Social and economic interests require total utilization of mineral raw materials of the operating mines, and furthermore utilization of waste heaps of the former mines. There are 5-6000 waste heaps of the operating and the closed mines in Hungary. 2000 of these waste heaps have already been estimated, and researches show that total amount of waste heaps can be calculated to 1 billion tones. These researches left out of consideration waste heaps exploited and placed in deep lignite mining. In several projects and researches we analysed processing of waste heap and possibilities to use its components. A processing technology for utilizing waste heaps has been developed based on laboratory and pilot plant tests. Great amount of useful materials of quarrying waste heaps can be utilized with this technology. Tests were also done for processing waste heap of a former ferrous metals mining. The developed processing technology contributes to use these waste heaps as aggregate for cement industry, as dielectric and aggregate for construction. The essay presents in details main characteristics of waste heaps, technologies already used for processing waste heaps of quarrying and ferrous metals mining, mass balances and qualitative parameters of the end products."
