The Helium Research Center, Helium Activity, Bureau of Mines, is presently engaged in a critical examination of all of the PVT data on helium that appear in the literature. The long-range objective is the development of a single equation of state for helium that will allow all of the thermodynamic properties to be calculated and will reproduce all of the data within the accuracy with which the data arc known. A preliminary objective is to obtain the best val¬ues of the second virial coefficients and to develop an equation that will reproduce the best values as a function of temperature. The method of treatment consists in expressing the PV product of a gas, for a given isotherm, in terms of a power series in either the pressure or the density and evaluating the constants by least squares solution. Associated with these functions whose coefficients have been evaluated by least squares, the following errors, or deviations, are of interest; the standard error of a single measurement; the standard error in each coefficient; and the standard error of the resulting function.

This report is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on exploration, development, mining methods, and costs at various mines in the United States. It describes operations at the Black Rock mine, Wah Chang Mining Corp., Mono County, Calif. The purpose of these reports is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on mining methods, practices, and costs. The Black Rock tungsten mine of the Wah Chang Mining Corp. is 33 miles north of Bishop, Calif., in the Benton Range, Mono County, Calif. The property was acquired in August 1950 and a well-planned program of exploration, development, and exploitation resulted in a good production record with low costs. Operations were halted in July 1957, about 6 months after suspension of the tungsten purchase program by the Federal Government.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of manganese from known domestic occurrences. Eight of these deposits were found to have demonstrated resources totaling 420 million metric tons with an average grade of 10 percent contained manganese. They were found to be submarginally subeconomic. Economic evaluations of the eight deposits resulted in incentive prices ranging from $8 to almost $35 per long ton unit (22.4 pounds) of contained manganese. Comparing these prices with the current market value of $1.70 per long ton unit of manganese clearly illustrates the submarginal nature of the domestic ores analyzed. These domestic resources would probably not be developed except in the case of an extreme national emergency. Production from the eight deposits would take 3 to 6 years to develop, and the final product would be manganese ore concentrate, which could be used in the production of ferromanganese. If preproduction development began in 1981, annual production would peak in 1987 with 900,000 metric tons of recoverable manganese. Thereafter, production would see a steady decline unless additional resources were located or technologic improvements were made to allow processing of lower grade material, or unless mining and processing of ocean manganese nodules began to take place.

The investigation described in this report is part of a survey by the Federal Bureau of Mines of the titanium resources of the United States. The purpose of this project was to study a typical coastal deposit of beach sands in the Middle Atlantic States, particularly in the area surrounding the Delmarva Peninsula. The field investigation consisted of a reconnaissance survey of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, followed by surface sampling and drilling of the sands on Assateague Island, off the Atlantic coast of Maryland. The study covered the period January-December 1957. Detailed analyses were made of 5-foot sections of eight drill holes along the Maryland section of the island. The heavy-mineral fraction of these samples was separated by sink-float tests, using acetylene bromide as the heavy liquid. The minerals comprising the heavy fraction were examined microscopically, and mineral counts were made on selected samples.

"SUMMARYThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties. A preliminary examination of the Rio Grande property was made by Bureau of Mines engineers in July 1942 and the property was examined again in July 1943.The Geophysical Branch of the Bureau undertook a Geophysical survey of the area in November 1943 and was intermittently active in the district until June 1946. The major portion of their work was done from June 191 to November 1945. Favorable areas for exploration were recommended by the Geophysical Branch of the Geological Survey, 3/ and all holes were drilled in them.Two projects were set up by the mining branch in an endeavor to find ore bodies on the strength of the geophysical information."

Float-and-sink tests indicate what results are obtainable by gravity separation and rare therefore an invaluable adjunct to most coal-cleaning processes. However, it is difficult to make a direct interpretation of float-and-sink data on coal, and several systems for interpreting them have been proposed. Of these, that developed and used extensively by Bird3/, Yancey4/, and Gandrud5/ is considered by the author to be the most satisfactory. It makes use of four interrelated curves (hereafter referred to as be "washability curves"). These curves were explained by Bird in a paper6/ published in 1923, but his explanation has been regarded by some as not sufficiently

A mineral survey of the 67, 110-acre Raven?s Eye WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in the north-central Snake River Plain of Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Blaine and Lincoln Counties; the northwest corner is about 1 mile east of Carey, 10. A search of county mining claim records indicated that no claims have been located in the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. A platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) occurs that is produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho. The material is marketed as decorative stone, used for wall veneers, and retails for approximately $125/ton. Within the W5A, approximately 18,000 tons of indicated reserves are concentrated in two areas, and a total of 12,000 tons of indicated subeconomic resources were found at six other localities. An additional 10,000 tons of inferred subeconomic resources are unevenly distributed over the remainder of the WSA.

"Results of a research effort directed towards identifying and measuring the genotoxic properties of respirable particulate matter involved in mining exposures, especially those which may synergistically affect genotoxic hazard, are presented. Particulate matter emissions from a direct injection diesel engine have been sampled and assayed to determine the genotoxic potential as a function of engine operating conditions. Diesel exhaust from a caterpillar 3304 diesel engine, representative of the ones found in underground mines, rated 100 hp at 2200 rpm is diluted in a multi-tube mini-dilution tunnel and the particulate matter is collected on 70 mm fluorocarbon coated glass fiber filters as well as on S"" x 10"" hi-volume filters. A six mode steady state duty cycle was used to relate engine operating conditions to the genotoxic potential. Results to-date on diesel exhaust have indicated that use of a primary component of pulmonary surfactant as a medium for collecting and applying respirable particulate material to cells for mutagenicity testing offers a true representation of in-vivo delivery of such respired aerosols to pulmonary cells and the genetic material within. Protocols have been developed to sample and assay the diesel soot and diesel soot/mineral dust complexes which would not compromise the surf ace and physical properties of the particulate material. Evidence has been gathered to show that diesel soot expresses mutagenic potential as dispersions in DPL in the Ames tests as well as sister chromatid exchange activity in the animal lung fibroblast ·derived V79 cell line. The results are comparable to the standard solvent extraction procedure. INTRODUCTIONDiesel engines are primarily associated with transportation; however, they are also very common in the work place. Of particular concern is the use of diesel engines in mining operations. Currently there are 1,950 diesel machines working in underground coal mines throughout the country. These units are used in 151 mines encompassing nine different states (MSHA, 1991). It is believed the use of diesel powered equipment has contributed to higher productivity in these mines. However, the exhaust from diesel engines operated in underground mines has been a subject of concern during the past decade because of its suspected relationship with health aspects. The particulate matter generated by the diesel engine is of particular concern."

The mining law now in force in Finland is the Imperial Russian Ukase of 1883, promulgated November 12, 1883, by Czar Alexander III, with the sanc- tion and permission of the Finnish Estates. This law repealed prior legisla- tion, as follows: Crdinance of liay 25, 1857, concerning the appropriation of ores and minerals; as wall as the right to remove and utilize them; proclama- tion of January 20, 1868, amending, the ordinance of May 25, 1857; proclama- tion of October 3, 1621, concerning the appropriation of precious metals; and the proclamation of October 30, 1878, concerning prospecting for gold, etc., in Finnish Lapland. A proposal for a new mining lar is still being considered by the Finnish Diet. This new law, if and when promulgated, will differ only slightly from the law of 1683 but will be drafted in more modern language."

In this paper, single-component gas sorption and transient diffusion processes are described within coal matrix exhibiting bimodal pore structure. The coal matrix is treated as a poroelastic medium manifesting swelling and shrinkage effects due to the sorption of gas under effective overburden stress. Gas transport is considered Fickian with molecular (bulk) and surface diffusion processes simultaneously taking place in the macro-and micropores of coal, respectively. The numerical formulation is intended to be explicit in nature to investigate the influences of sorption phenomena on the macropore volumes and on the overall gas transport for the cases of gas uptake by and release from coal. Results of the study show the presence of hysteresis during a sorption?desorption cycle of the gas. It is also found that the overall gas transport takes place at a rate significantly less than that in the macropores only. Thus the existence of a retardation effect in the overall gas transport is concluded. This retardation effect is primarily due to the micropore resistances, in particular gas adsorption, and is independent of the changes in the macropore volumes. It is shown that macroporosity of the coal matrix may change during gas transport due to combined effects of pressure and sorption-induced swelling or shrinkage of the coal. It is estimated that the macroporosity variation is non-uniform in space and time, as it is expected in reality, and typically taking values less than ±10 percent of the initial porosity.

A new type of apparatus for prerefining molten blast furnace iron and to reduce the cost of subsequent steelmaking consists of a funnel - shaped device lined with firebrick into which a horizontal stream of molten pig iron is directed tangentially at the top . The rotary motion thus induced causes the stream to flatten itself upon the wall and flow in a spiral path to the outlet ; thus , the device was termed " vortex cone .' Oxygen and other refining agents are impinged upon the flowing metal in the cone where reaction is facilitated by the large metal surface exposed and the turbulent flow pattern . Experiments with water in 1 - foot - diameter funnels provided an idealization of the flow patterns to be expected with molten iron . A brick - lined reactor 3 feet in diameter was built for desiliconizing molten pig iron in lots of 1 to 2 tons . At flow rates of 0.3 to 0.5 ton min - 1 (430 to 720 tons per day ) this apparatus was 64- to 90 - pct effective in desiliconization with oxygen efficiencies of 19 to 41 pct . Detailed experiments to develop basic engineering data are underway , and adaptation of this principle to other reactions and reactants is planned .

SECONDARY CRUSHER NOISE WAS REDUCED 10 TO 15 DBA BY THE ENCLOSURES.

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

"INTRODUCTION Direct visual microscopic determination of particle-size distribution and number concentration of atmospheric dust is time-consuming and trying to the eyes. By using the microscope to project images of the particles at high magnification onto a screen much of the eyestrain can be eliminated and particle-size distribution results obtained with less effort and at a considerable saving in time. It also permits simultaneous observation of the images by more than one person. Microprojection requires no more skill and very little more apparatus than is required in the use of the microscope. Anyone familiar with the microscope should be able to obtain as perfect images on the projection screen as in direct visual microscopy since the same laws and limitationsThe theory and practice of microprojection are described in detail in texts. 5/6/ The procedure has been used and found to be satisfactory for measuring the particle-size distribution of sub-sieve-size substances, such as pigments and powder 7/8/ in the same size range as that of atmospheric dust. The Bureau of Mines has used the microprojector and found it to be quite satisfactory for (1) the determination of the number concentration of atmospheric dust R.I. 3289 in samples collected by the Owens jet dust counter; (2) particle-size distribution in samples of atmospheric dust collected by the Owens jet dust counter and by the electric precipitator; and (3) the particle-size distribution of dusts, blood cells, bacteria, and pollen. Work is in progress at this Bureau on the use of the microprojector in counting impinger samples. The use of different kinds of illumination, such as reflected (dark field), polarized, monochromatic, and ultraviolet, in the projection of images of atmospheric dust particles is being considered."

This investigation was made to develop a method of preparing high - purity thorium metal in quantities up to 20 kilograms per batch . Several methods for the preparation , purification , and reduction of thorium tetrachloride are discussed . Thorium tetrachloride was prepared by chlorination of decomposed thorium nitrate or oxalate with carbon tetrachloride or phosgene . tion of the crude tetrachloride was achieved by multiple distillations or by filtration of the molten chloride . It was found that high - purity thorium metal could be prepared by sodium reduction of thorium tetrachloride if chloride of sufficient purity were available . Byproduct salts and excess reductant were removed by vacuum distillation , and the resultant thorium metal sponge was consolidated by consumable - electrode or fixed - electrode arc melting . It was demonstrated that metal prepared by this method could be fabricated into bar , rod , or sheet , at room temperature .

This paper describing the timekeeping and pay-roll methods of the Britannia raining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of nines regarding office procedures in connection with mining operations. The general office of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. (Ltd.) is located at Britannia Beach, B. C., a town of about 600 inhabitants at tidewater on the east side of Howe Sound and about 30 miles from Vancouver, B. C. The Beach, as it is locally termed, is a company town consisting largely of about 250 employees of the company and their families. Here is the milling and concentrating plant of over 6,000 tons daily capacity- the main service units comprising the electrical, mechanical, blacksmith and woodworking shops and the local electric-furnace foundry; the central-heating steam plant; the air and electric generating units; the ball-manufacturing plant; the warehouses; and the general store, which serves this community and also acts as distributor for the general stores located elsewhere on the property.

The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

"4.1 IntroductionIn previous chapters impactors have been described as useful instruments for classifying particles by their aerodynamic diameters and for measuring particle size distributions. These impactors can be used most reliably if the user has some understanding as to how the impactor classifies particles and what parameters are important in this classification process. This understanding can best be obtained by a theoretical inspection of inertial principles.This chapter reviews the most recent theoretical impactor work and the latest theoretical efficiency curves. Procedures are then given for using these efficiency curves in the design and evaluation of cascade impactors. Finally, several examples are given comparing theoretical and experimental efficiency curves, pointing out when the theory can be used with great confidence and when the theory should be used only as a guideline.Due to the rather simple principle of operation of an inertial impactor (i.e., the impingement of a jet of particle-laden air on a flat plate) the impactor readily lends itself to theoretical analysis. Three notable works in the early 1950,s were those of Davies and Aylward (1951), Davies et al. (1951), and Ranz and Wong (1952).Davies and Aylward (1951) used a method of conformal mapping to obtain an analytical solution to Euler's equation for the flow of a frictionless fluid through a rectangular impactor. Numerical calculations were then carried out whereby the equations of motion of the particles were solved in a stepwise manner, leading to a determination of the efficiency curves. Since this theory assumed potential flow, the effect of Reynolds numbers on the characteristics of the impactor could not be determined.Ranz and Wong (1952) used an approximate flow field to calculate the efficiency of both round and rectangular nozzle impactors. In the vicinity of the stagnation point, the flow field was assumed to be that of frictionless stagnation flow. Here, the resulting equation of motion for the particles was found to be in a form similar to equations for free vibration with viscous damping. Therefore, the known solutions of the vibration equations were applied directly to the problem and the efficiency curves calculated. This solution technique, however, could not take into account the various geometric variations such as the jet-to-plate distance in the determination of the efficiency curves.The work of Ranz and Wong (1952) was later modified by Mercer and Chow (1968) and Mercer and Stafford (1969) so that the rather simple flow fields of Ranz and Wong (1952) could be used to account for various jet-to-plate distances. The same techniques, however, were used to determine the impactor collection efficiency curves."

As part of the continuing effort by the Bureau of Mines to promote mine safety, research work is being conducted at the Experimental coal mine, Bruceton, Pa., on the prevention of coal-mine explosions and on other mine-safety problems. The principal subjects studied during the past 2 years are briefly described in this paper. Although at present these problems are relevant particularly to the mine layout and to high-speed mining practices in numerous American coal mines, it is hoped that the findings will prove interesting and useful also to our European research colleagues. Some of the investigations treated here will be presented in greater detail in forthcoming Bureau of Mines reports. 1. UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF COAL CUTTINGS The seams in mist American bituminous-coal mines are undercut, shear-cut, or top-cut before blasting. The cuttings arc generally loaded out with the balance of the coal. However, in some mines it is not economical to load and remove cuttings from the mine. This applies especially if the cut section of the seam is of appreciably lower grade than the rest of the coal, or if the cut is made partly into an adjacent stratum that is high in incombustible content. In such mines the cuttings are sometimes stored in random heaps in rooms or other areas, along the ribs of mine entries, or in layers on the floor of rooms or entries.
