Face ventilation is generally the most critical area in the coal mine ventilation system. Various studies have repeatedly shown that good ventilation is by far the most effective and least costly method of controlling dust and gas problems created during face operations. The Bureau of Mines has recently developed and assisted in the development of several new concepts in face ventilation systems, and in methods to accurately evaluate these systems underground. A new type of scrubber and ventilation system design built into the auger support frame of a continu- ous miner was developed. The objective was to improve face ventilation and reduce respirable dust concentrations. With this arrangement, one scrubber is mounted into each side of the boom. Laboratory and underground tests of various scrubber discharge arrangements showed good to excellent dust and methane control. Combined face ventilation systems, using both blowing and exhaust curtain, potentially offer dust and gas control and deeper cutting. Bureau tests at a mine using a combined face ventilation system and remote- control-operated continuous miners showed excellent dust and methane control. The advancement of line curtain systems beyond permanent supports without exposing workmen to roof fall hazards can be accomplished only with specially designed extendable devices. Numerous concepts for line curtain extension have been developed and tested. For the past several years, the Bureau has been testing various types of extensible face ventilation systems. These extensible systems can generally be classified as floor-, roof-, machine-, and rib-mounted systems. In the past 6 years, approximately 40 systems have been evaluated for feasibility. From these, several have been selected as practical or innovative and are presented herein. A technique developed by the Bureau to accurately and safely evaluate the effectiveness of face ventilation is also presented.

INCREASING demand for improved strength-weight ratios made on aircraft structures has resulted in a gradual increase in the tensile strength requirements for steels used in such applications. As the cyclic loads often are more critical than static loads, and the fatigue properties are generally the design criteria, the question arises as to whether an improvement in fatigue properties accompanies the increased tensile strength. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between fatigue and tensile properties for an aircraft quality steel in the 155 to 280 ksi (1000 psi) tensile strength range, using the Prot method of fatigue testing. Procedure and Results After preliminary work to establish proper heat treating procedures for this heat of aircraft quality electric furnace steel (a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel," AMS- Prot Fatigue Testing Method—The determination of the endurance limit by the conventional Wohler method can be time-consuming and easily require 20 specimens when statistical variance is to be established. This is also true when endurance limit loads are determined on actual parts or subassem-blies, and the desirability of a reliable accelerated method has been evident for some time. The primary advantage of the Prot method of fatigue testing is in reducing the number of specimens and the time required for each test. Unlike the Wohler method, every Prot specimen tested con- tributes to the determination of the endurance limit, and the authors have been able to duplicate Wohler results obtained with 20 specimens with only half the specimens and a fourth of the total cycles. This new technique for defining the endurance limit was proposed in 1948' by Marcel Prot and consists of progressively increasing cyclic stress until fatigue failure occurs. LOCATION THE Ozark region occupies a large part of the southern half, of Missouri, the northern portion of Arkansas and comparatively small areas in northeast Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, and southern Illinois. . It is a roughly elliptical plateau which has been deeply dissected by stream erosion, and which slopes imperceptibly into the prairie regions to the north, east, and west, but which terminates rather abruptly along the Arkansas River on the south and Tertiary lowland to the southeast. The-Boston Mountains extending for a distance of some 200 miles (321 -km.) along the Arkansas River rise to an elevation of 2000 ft. (609 m.), forming the most prominent topographic feature of the region. The so-called St. Francois Mountains in St. Francois, Madison, and adjoining counties in southeast Missouri, form a prominent but more restricted topographic feature, the highest point rising to an elevation of 1800 ft. (548 m.).. The remainder of the region is largely a plateau area varying from 800 to 1500 ft. (243 to 457 m.) in elevation. STRATIGRAPHY The region is underlain chiefly by sedimentary formations, which outcrop in roughly concentric bands around a comparatively restricted area of igneous rocks in the St. Francois Mountain district. Although located geographically near the eastern edge of the Ozarks, the St. Francois Mountains have apparently suffered the greatest orogenic movement and the lowest formations of the succession are exposed in their immediate vicinity. The various sedimentary formations of the region do not show any considerable metamorphism and have suffered little change since consolidation. With the exception of a few basic intrusions in Ste. Genevieve County and a pegmatite dike in Camden County, Missouri, there is no evidence of igneous-action, since the first sedimentary beds were deposited.

Manganese oxide acitivities and sulfide capacities have been measured at 1650°C in mixtures of MnO + A1203 and MnO + SiO2 - Al2O3. Sulfide capacities have also been measured at 165O0C for melts of MnO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2, MgO + SiO2 + Al2O3, MgO + MnO + SiO2, and SiO2 + Al2O3 and for crystalline CaO. The activity coefficients of the sulfides of manganese and magnesium have been derived where possible. It looks as though the activity coefficients of sulfides are greatest at compositions where the free energies of formation of the silicate mixtures have their maximum negative values. The amphoteric nature of alumina is reflected in the results for the binaries and ternaries in which it is present with silica. The limiting solubility of CaS in CaO at 1650°C is 6.3 x 10-4 mole fraction. THE activities of manganese oxide have been measured in a variety of silicate and aluminate melts by use of the equilibrium (MnO)slag = [Mn]pt .½O2 [l] and the experimental techniques described previously.' Sulfide capacities (CS = wt pct S (PO2/PS2)½) have also been determined in a series of melts, by use of an established method2 which exploits the equilibrium (O°) + ½S2 = (S") . ½O2 [2] If CS and the activity of a metal oxide are known in a melt, the activity coefficient of the metal sulfide can be calculated by use of the equilibrium constant K, for the pure phase reaction MO i ½S2 = MS + ½O2 [3] The activity coefficient of the sulfide is then given by the equation

Notwithstanding the rapidly increasing use of copper, due to the extension of its applications within the last few years, the fact of its continued steady decline in price stands prominently forward. Nor have we far to look for the cause. The opening up of the vast copper-deposits of our Western States and territories is the metallurgical event of the last five years. We must not forget, in looking at the new field, the changed conditions under which the metallurgist must work, as compared with the previous history of copper-smelting. Until quite recently, the copper-plants of the country were few in number; and the concentration of industry implied in this circumstance, allowed many practices which must be considered as inapplicable to the conditions offered at the many mines which have of late become such important factors in our copper-production. Thus the old style of smelting the ore for matte in brick furnaces, involving great expense and time in their construction, while deservedly losing repute even in its old strongholds, in comparison with water-jacketed smelters, is still in some cases adhered to. But to put up such furnaces at Western mines would be out of the question. The large and continual need of brick for relining and repairs acts as an effectual bar, when such furnaces come into competition with the light, portable, and easily managed water-jacketed smelters of improved types. It is owing to the present unusual activity, manifested in the opening up of new copper-properties and the erection of plants for working them, that any improvement in furnace-construction is of especial interest and importance. LANE, Tufts College, Mass.-Is there any noticeable effect in drilling against salt water? Mr. Knapp says that the mud settles very quickly when brine is added-. What is the effect when you strike a strong salt water ill boring? I. N. KNAPP.-You are supposed to have enough mud pressure in your well to keep the saltwater out. I have drilled against what I knew to be 80 ft. head of water, and hot water too at 99.5°; this water did not show until the well was bailed and the mud pressure reduced. HENRY Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary*).-Mr. Knapp may be interested to learn that the use of mud in drilling through porous strata is much older than lie appears to be aware of. It has been used notably by Honigmann for boring shafts in Holland and in some of the adjoining portions of Germany. At the Oranien Nassau colliery, shafts about 12 ft. in diameter and 425 ft. deep were sunk in. this way-namely, by boring with a rotary borer, a thick mud puddle being pumped into the shaft, so as to maintain a pressure in the shaft greater than the hydrostatic pressure in the surrounding loose sands and thus keeping the sides of the shaft from collapsing. He will find references to this method in Das Abbohren von Schächten; Handbuch der Ingenieurwissenshaften, p. 134, also in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining Engineers, vol. xiii (1896-97), p. 155. The process appears to have been employed even before 1895, though I cannot give the exact date when it was first used.

THE township of Cloncurry is situated in the northwestern part of Queensland, about latitude S. 20° 42' 53" and longitude E: 140° 30' 25". Townsville is the port through which all the trade passes and is about 470 miles east-northeast of Cloncurry township. The Cloncurry copper district covers an area about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide. Unfortunately the mines are very scattered over this area, there being no large groups of mines. Mount Elliott mine is situated about 70 miles south from the township of Cloncurry, and Mount Oxide mine about 150 miles north of Cloncurry. The district has been known for the last 35 years, and in the early stages a large amount of capital was expended with little to show for it; but within the last four years the railway has been extended from Townsville to Mount Elliott and about 40 miles north of Cloncurry, which has made possible the treatment of the ores of the mines on this extension. The Mount Elliott company within the last few years has smelted and converted on its mine 169,688 tons. of ore for 20,554 tons of blister copper, containing 20,377 tons of copper, 35,642 oz. of gold and 28,841 oz. of silver, at a cost of about £33 per ton of blister copper, f.o.b. Townsville. This cost included all ' development, wages, salaries, general management, office, agency, legal expenses, freight, etc. The gold and silver contents would practically pay for freight to Europe, refining, realization charges, etc. The costs of supplies are as follows: Firewood 15s., coke, 75s., mine timber, 54s., and coal, 60s. per long ton; explosives: dynamite and gelignite, 50s. and blasting gelatine, 65s. 6d. per case.

One of the most prominent features of our present-day industrial development is the ever-increasing demand put upon materials of construction. Engineering ingenuity, within the past 25 years, has been unusually active, and in some fields at least engineers frankly say that engineering design has progressed as far as the limitations imposed by the properties of the present materials of construction will permit. Consequently, they are today demanding improvement in their working materials and seeking new ones, through the aid of which the present limitations of design may be overcome. The activity of this search is evident in all fields, but it is particularly so in that of structural materials required to be resistant to corrosion. The corrosion resistance of metals and alloys is never absolute and all-inclusive; a particular alloy will withstand some corrosive conditions well and fail utterly under others. Furthermore, other properties, physical and mechanical, required in conjunction with corrosion resistance vary considerably for different commercial applications. One wants a soft, ductile sheet metal resistant to atmospheric corrosion; another, a high-strength alloy resistant to sulfuric acid. The last decade has witnessed active and definite progress in the development of high-strength, corrosion-resisting alloys. In June, 1924, a symposium by the American Society for Testing Materials, on Corrosion-resistant, Heat-resistant and Electrical-resistance Alloys, disclosed no less than 60 commercial alloys the properties of which were described as being suitable for industrial service where corrosion resistance was a feature. Today the number of these alloys has been doubled, at least. In addition, economy in design and construction through decreased weight has given considerable impetus to the improvement of alloys of which the mechanical propprties may be improved by heat-treatment.

Resources for Freedom, a report by the President's Materials Policy Commission, commonly termed either the Paley report, after its chairman, or the PMPC report, was issued in June 1952. The data collecting and assembly work for its preparation were done in 1951. The statistical base in most cases was 1950. It reviewed our economy and predicted what it will be in 1975.* The bases for the predictions were given. Consideration was given not only to statistical data and trends but also to technological changes taking place and likely to take place in the ensuing 25 years that will affect our economy. The supply of raw materials was studied and predictions made as to the availability of supply and the sources in 1975. One of the industries covered was iron and steel. For the most part the report did not attempt to provide a curve showing annual growth for any industry or commodity. It contrasted 1950 with the probable status in 1975. Interpolation between these dates is difficult and the Commission did not intend that it be used for short interim intervals. It is possible in 1958 to show the actual changes from 1950. The magnitude of the changes illustrates the agreement with some interpolation of the Paley report. Statistical comparisons can be general only because the Commission did not postulate a linear change. A study of the iron and steel industry will show if the general predictions have been realized or if gross errors were made. This paper is concerned with such an analysis. It is concerned with the production and consumption of crude, not fabricated products. It attempts to bring various facets of technical and statistical information on the industry up to date.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) OWING to a unique labor situation and other unusual circumstances, the mining methods of the Rand are hardly comparable with practice elsewhere. They are' of considerable interest, however, and their impor-tance is increased by the magnitude of the industry with which they are identified, gold of $166,186,000 value, say 40 per cent. of the world's production, having been recovered from 25,701,954 tons of ore milled in 1914. In the sketchy remarks to follow, attention will first be drawn to some influential factors of general bearing, after which certain features at two mines of the writer's group will be referred to. It is hoped that engineers associated with similar or different conditions and practice will contribute to broaden the discussion. Before proceeding, recognition is due the generous assistance of C. E. Knecht and F. A. Unger. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS The principal mines are situated along the northern limit of an irregularly shaped geological basin, and extend in almost unbroken continuity over a distance of about 60 miles. As the boundaries are defined by vertical planes there are both "outcrop" and "deep-level" properties, all differing in size and in technical features. So much has been written in regard to the geology of the Rand that only a few pertinent features need here be recalled. Briefly, the ore deposits are profitably enriched portions of certain conglomerate beds or "reefs," rarely more than three, which are interposed between quartzite, or quartzite and slate, and lie so closely together that where more than one are mined they are dealt with as a work-ing unit, although they may lie stoped separately. Their collective extension is locally referred to as "the Reef."

The Mining Section of The National Safety Council recently sent out a questionnaire to operators, regarding the class of rope used, specifications required or obtained, factors of safety observed, methods of fastening ropes, lubrication, inspection, and points observed when rope is to be discarded. The answers received from this questionnaire, largely from metal mines, give interesting information, from which recommendations for safety practice on hoisting ropes are drawn. Depth of Mine The depth in the majority of cases noted is from 1000 ft. to 1500 ft. (304 to 457 m.) and records come from a number hoisting from depths of 2000 to 3000 ft. Hoisting is generally done in balance, with a few companies using counterweights. Seldom, more than two shifts are occupied in hoisting. A number of large operators limit the shift for engineers to 6 hr. A few of the larger operators have separate hoists for men and supplies, with a higher class rope for men. The range of loads varies from 7 to 17 tons and greater in a few cases, with a balanced weight of 4 to 7 tons. Size or Drums and Sheaves The size of drums and size of sheaves are generally in accordance with recommendations of rope manufacturers. Only one-half of the operators use grooved drums; one, The Sulphide Corpn., New South Wales, uses wood-lagged drums. Very few operators have drums capable of holding all the rope in a single wrap. Cone drums or cone and cylinder drums, in the mines heard from, are very rare. A few mines of shallow depth use a small drum and large-sized sheave. While this may be allowed, and in some cases is all right, the size of drum and sheave should be fully equal to that recommended by the rope manufacturers and should be at least 60 to 100 times the diameter of the

I WISH to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. Nevertheless, in discussing old phenomena from new standpoints, thus furnishing a metallurgical parallax, if I may say so, these theoretical speculations may have their value in helping to a clearer comprehension of the phenomena and laws we now know, and in suggesting new lines of inquiry. While an increase of height in blast furnaces is not always followed by increase in their power of production, experience proves that it tends to increase it; for while we have many cases of short furnaces producing more iron than longer ones, yet enormous productions, such as those of the Lucy and Isabella furnaces of Pittsburgh, and of the furnaces of Esch sur l'Alzette, in Luxembourg, have never been reached in short furnaces. We may safely infer that height is an element essential to great production, though of course not the only essential element, and that, in the case of high furnaces which are not capable of great production, some other essential element is wanting. Moreover, experience teaches that within limits increase of height tends to increase the producing power in a still higher ratio. The attempts of British investigators to arrive at definite knowledge concerning the nature of the nitrogenous constituents of coal have been mainly made through studies of the behavior of coal on carbonization and gasification. There have been carried out numerous determinitions of the distribution of nitrogen in the products of carbonization under laboratory and large-scale conditions; and by a careful consideration of the extent to which nitrogen is liberated, say as ammonia,. at different temperatures and under different conditions of operation as regards atmosphere, it has been possible to form some general notions as to the nature of the nitrogenous compounds present in the coal; and at the same time to arrive at clearer ideas as to what are the important operative factors in determining the ammonia yield under working conditions. This work has been spread over many years and is summarized below. The difficulties of connecting the results in such a way as to allow of the nitrogenous constituents of the coal being described in terms of specific organic structure are great. They arise, for example, in the carbonization process, because the phenomena of decomposition observed at any one temperature can only refer to compounds decomposing at that temperature, each of them with a previous history of chemical transformations occurring at lower temperatures. To put it in &other way, the compounds occurring in the coke at any stage are not in the least likely to be those present in the original coal. The same difficulty, in a milder form, occurs when the method of differential solution is attempted. There is always the preliminary question, almost impossible to answer, as to how far the separation by the use of the solvent has involved some form of decomposition of the original compounds. In the following summary, an attempt has been made to bring together results obtained by British workers.

PUBLIC discussions of mine finance in the tech-nical press have been confined mainly to methods of providing funds for the development of pros-pects or other mining operations which have not reached the stage of productivity. The application of modern financing methods to mines which have behind them a successful record of net earnings has, for some reason, been given scant consideration by mine owners and managers. In a few conspicuous cases, such for example as the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chile Copper Co., and one or two others, industrial finance has been applied to mining operations on the scale and after the fashion of other operations. When extensions are needed re-course is usually had, however, to the sale of common stock, with the obvious disadvantage of diluting the holdings of every stockholder of record prior to such financing. In some cases, it has been sought to over-come this disadvantage by issuing stock purchase rights to shareholders of record. If the stockholder is in a position to acquire additional stock, he may then pre-serve his interest intact, otherwise he must suffer a dilution of his holding. If he purchases additional stock he is, from one point of view, paying more for his in-terest than he bargained for when he made his original purchase. In many cases development and equipment are paid for out of surplus or current earnings. It is sometimes most difficult to explain to a manager why he can afford to borrow money when funds are available from a sur-plus account. Nevertheless, industrial enterprises with adequate surplus accounts often finance new construc-tion by the issuance of bonds. Such a procedure enables the company to maintain its surplus intact, and to con-tinue the payment of dividends during a temporary period of unusual expenditures.

Operations Research developments within the mining industry have evolved over the last few years through stages typical of any new technique. By 1965, most companies had passed from mere recognition of the usefulness of operations research techniques to cautious acceptance of and, in some in- stances, to confident utilization of this relatively new tool. This is reflected in the growing interest and increasing participation of mining companies in sponsoring individual papers on the subject published in mining journals or presented in full sessions at annual meetings. Chief among the sources which served, in 1965, as a barometer for measuring operations research progress within mining is the Annual Symposium on the Applications of Statistics, Operations Research, and Computers in the Mining Industry, which is now sponsored by the University of Arizona, Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, The Pennsylvania State University, and the Society of Mining Engineers of the AIME. Two significant trends were evident in the applications of operations research techniques to problems typical of the mining industry. On the one hand, unique and imaginative O.R. applications were being developed by several companies, government agencies, and at the university level. These techniques were usually developed to solve specific existing problems. On the other hand, there was unmistakable evidence of attempts to look for problems which could be solved with those "operations research" approaches which would involve the use of the digital computer. In the latter instance, solutions may become applications or demonstrations of how the computer can be used in the reduction and interpretation of data, without the benefit of a decision model. This is a common tendency as most companies have computers, at least in their accounting sections, and many operations research solutions require the use of a digital computer. From the applications observed in 1965 and in prior years, the successful techniques have evolved.

Recent discussions have furnished to the members of the Institute much information concerning aluminum and its applications. The present paper will be devoted almost entirely to the description of a process by which the metal is produced in the form of alloys. The characters which especially distinguish the Heroult process consist in electrolyzing a mass of molten alumina (Al2O3), and at the same time alloying the separated aluminum with a heavy metal, the heat necessary for the fusion of both the alumina and the alloying metal being supplied by the direct passage through the molten Al2 0, of an electric current of high amperage and low voltage. The process has been in active operation at Neuhausen in Switzerland for about two years. It is also in active operation at Froges in southern France. Both these locations were selected for this purpose on account of the presence of large and desirable water-powers. The apparatus consists of a carbon containing-vessel, which may be a single crucible for small operations, or may be built up of slabs or blocks of carbon for large and industrial operations. When built up of slabs or blocks, the whole is surrounded by an iron casing. In the earlier crucibles this iron casing was cast around the carbon, in order to secure close electrical contact. This, however, has been found unnecessary; and in the later crucibles the casings consist of plates bolted together, while pulverized carbon is packed between the carbon blocks and the iron. Electric conductors are united direct to this iron casing, and the current passes from this through the carbon lining to the interior of the crucible. By this

As the Appalachian mountains reach their maximum development in western North Carolina, we find also in that region indications of extensive dynamic disturbances and alterations undergone by the rocks in' connection with these mountain uplifts. Among the minor results of these changes have been the formation of numerous dikes or a veins " of exceedingly coarse granitic materials, which in some places are mined for the mica which they contain, and in other places are quarried for kaolin. These dikes are filled with quartz, feldspar, and mica, in varying proportions, very coarsely crystallized. Sometimes the mica (generally muscovite), sometimes the feldspar (generally albite or orthoclase) predominates. When the mica is present in considerable quantity, and in large crystals, the dike is usually spoken of as a mica-vein, and is often worked for mica. Sometimes these crystals of mica occur on one side or the other; sometimes on both sides; and sometimes they are largely concentrated toward the middle of the vein, or, it may be, distributed throughout the dike with a considerable degree of uniformity. In many cases the crystals of mica are too small and few to permit the working of the vein as a micamine ; in other cases, very little mica is present, and the feldspar constitutes the larger part of the material. This feldspar of the dikes undergoes, through the weathering action of the atmosphere, certain chemical changes, resulting in its alteration from feldspar into kaolinite—the kaolin of commerce. These dikes vary considerably in size, ranging from a few inches to several hundred feet in thickness, and up to many hundred yards in length. They are generally parallel to the schistosity of the crystalline rocks, which, however, in some cases, they cross at varying angles. The kaolin in those dikes which occur in the Unaka or
