From a study of coke samples obtained from the tuyere level of four Australian Blast Furnaces, the nature of in-furnace coke degradation has been investigated. At the periphery of the raceway is a concentration of fines and the lump coke appears dull and rounded. However coke from the deadman is angular and relatively undegraded. Cokes made from higher rank coal appear to suffer preferential attack of the reactive maceral derived component (binder). The coke from lower rank coal appears to be attacked non-preferentially by the solution-loss reaction. Initial attempts to simulate these phenomena have given results consistent with these findings. From chemical analysis of the tuyere probe samples there appears to be a relative increase in carbon and decrease in-.sulphur and phosphorous between stockline and tuyere level. An overall decrease in coke mineral matter derived material was noted and associated with this was a significant gasification of silicon. Consequent formation of silicon carbide was noted.

"In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

The use of explosives in underground mining has its drawbacks, particularly in the case of thin or narrow vein type deposits. Due to that, there is a need to develop more discriminative and safe rock-breaking technologies. Mechanical rock splitting seems to be one of the most promising avenues in this respect. This paper describes briefly principles and features of radial-axial splitters. It reviews a feasibility study done to evaluate a potential of this technology in selective mining. It was intended to compare productivity and cost of ædrill-splitÆ mining with conventional cut-and-fill method. Hypotheses and assumptions adopted, methodology used and the obtained results are presented and discussed. The study has confirmed an interesting potential of radial-axial splitters in mining thin and narrow vein deposits. In conclusion, it is stressed however, that it will take more R&D work to corroborate the results obtained. Some suggestions concerning future research in this field are also given.

Commercial operation of the Sherritt Gordon process in Australia for the leaching of nickel sulphides has promoted an investi- gation of the factors which influence extraction kinetics. This portion of the investigation has been directed towards the physical and chemical nature of the concentrate and the physical evi- dence of the mode of extraction. Details of the particle size distribution, mineral composition and chemical composition are given. The dis- tribution of various minerals in different size fractions and magnetic fractions is discussed. An electron microprobe was used to determine the composition of individual grains in the concentrate. The solid residue from an ammonia oxi- dation leach was subjected to microphotograph- ic examination, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning by an electron microprobe. Clear evidence was obtained for a shrinking core mode of kinetic extraction with an amorphous iron oxide product layer contrary to previous reports that the latter is pseudomorphic with the original mineral.

The gas bubble energy generated by an explosive plays a major part. in the fragmentation, muckpile movement and damage produced. Previously, the interaction between gas pressure and the rock has been interpreted from a theoretical basis or a qualitative study of breakage mechanisms. A method to measure the fluctuations in gas pressure in rock adjacent to the blast has been developed. This peak pressure will vary with structure, as well as with distance and explosive type. The technique is simple to apply and can be used to observe the flow rate of gas at. varying distances. The apparent velocity of penetration is an indication of whether gas has travelled through pre-existing or blast induced cracks. The technique provides a ?n:eans of determining the suitability of an explosive for a given rock type, depending on the amount of displacement desired. The technique has application in optimir.irig throw blasting and predicting and controlling damage, particularly in highly structured rock masses.

Fragmentation control is perhaps the most critical aspect of quarrying operations, potentially impacting on the costs of all down stream processes, and sometimes even on the economic viability of an operation. The focal points of studies to control fragmentation are generally the pattern of blastholes, the accuracy of drilling, and the most appropriate powder factor. Recent studies suggest that the performance, and consistency of performance, of explosive detonation in the blastholes may also be a significant factor impacting on blast performance in hard rock quarries. This paper presents the results of studies of bulk emulsion and watergel explosive performance, using blasthole velocity of detonation measurements, and its impact on fragmentation. Field studies show a strong correlation between blasthole VoD and blast fragmentation. Another aspect of explosive performance impacting on ease of excavation of blasted rock is muckpile displacement, from which estimates of effective heave energy have been made for different bulk slurry (emulsion and watergel) products.

The global goal of Sustainable Development is not achievable without major changes in the way goods and services are delivered and material needs are satisfied, which requires tremendous innovation in the supply chains and life cycles in which minerals and energy processing take part. Values derived from minerals and metals processing need to be delivered with a fraction of current ecological impacts, which means removing technical obstacles to eliminating waste and emissions in the minerals cycle. The challenge is to find economically attractive ways to get there, through eco-efficiency gains in existing operations, capturing regional synergies, streamlining and greening the materials supply chain, and commercialising new process technology and new products. This paper summarises the outcomes of the Sustainable Resource Processing project, which was designed to provide a strategic analysis of what sustainability means for minerals and metals processing and how that can be effectively translated into technical and business innovation.

Mining of sill pillars is more difficult than the ordinary mining. The sill pillar mining is performed under more difficult conditions and the mining of the sill pillar itself produces more problems; failure of the rock due to high stresses, difficulties in controlling the fill above, overall stability of the stope and special requirements on the technique for backfilling. Altogether this makes sill pillar mining technically difficult and often not profitable. A project was therefore initiated with the aim to increase the mineable ore reserve by making sill pillars mineable, both technically and economically. The project aimed at developing technique for already existing sill pillars as well as planned sill pillars. For the existing sill pillars a technique would have to be developed for mining beneath unstabilised fill. For sill pillars that would be created in the future, the most suitable mining method and methods of supporting or stabilising the fill in the stope above was to be chosen within the project.

In recent years there have been a number of excellent towns built for mining communities in remote parts of Australia. Planning has been thorough, and very large capital expenditures have been made by companies to provide high standards of accommodation, services and amenities. But so often the phrase 'company town' comes to be applied, expressing the frustrations of the residents, working for a single employer who dominates their lives, and of the company, which would prefer not to have to build and operate a town. The much-vaunted early success of some iron ore, bauxite and coal projects has led to a belief that the success of all mining projects is assured. Those holding this belief ignore the vagaries of mineral deposits and of markets, and the need to amortise large high-risk capital expenditures, much of which is spent on social and industrial infrastruc- ture. The mining industry internationally seems on the verge of a major underground support revolution as suppliers, mines, consultants and researchers develop, test and use thin support (structural) membranes (or superskins as they are commonly called) mainly as a replacement for screen/wire mesh. Thick membrane support in the form of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used since the 1950s in underground mines. Shotcrete, in mines, is generally applied at a thickness between 25 and 100 mm depending on the need. Thin membranes are however applied at a typical thickness between 2 and 6 mm. Certain thin membranes have been available for several years (Tannant et al, 1999), but the intense interest in such supports has only grown in the last few years. The interest lies mainly in the potential to safely reduce the mining cycle time and hence improve productivity. There is however considerable confusion concerning such supports, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about thin support membranes.

During recent years, Central Queensland has experienced a boom in its coal mining industry. This has involved many companies in projects requiring large capital expenditure. As with most projects of this size, many operating problems are now being experienced which were unforseen at the feasibility stage. One of these problems is the failure of pit slopes and spoil piles at some of the strip mining operations. There have been serious stability problems associated with Utah Development Company's strip mining operations in Central Queensland, in particular the Goonyella Mine. A field investigation programme was under- taken to determine the cause of highwall and spoilpile slope failures. Spoilpile failures were found to result from weakness near the spoil/floor contact zone. Highwall failures were found to result from a combination of unfavourable bedding plane dips and weakness, and the presence of joints in weak o~erburdep; Satisfactory solutions fa the staiity, problems are difficult to formulate, and-field stability experimentation is still at an early Stage.

Sydney is the capital city of NSW and has a population of approximately four million people. Eighty per cent of the cityÆs water is supplied by Warragamba Dam, which is situated some 75 kilometres south west of the city centre. A risk assessment was carried out on the dam and future predictions of water flows into the catchment area showed that there was a risk of a one in 700-year flood not being contained by the dam. The predicted loss of life and property damage warranted the construction of an auxiliary spillway on the eastern side of the existing dam to cater for any uncontrollable influx of water. A test blasting program was instigated and the blasting parameters were established that would lead to routine production blasting of the sandstone rock making it more cost effective to excavate. Blast induced vibrations were a concern to the owners and the dam wall and ancillary infrastructure was instrumented with sensitive vibration monitoring equipment during the test blasting phase of the operation. Once the blasting parameters were established from the testing program production blasting was carried out on a daily basis to maintain æstockpileÆ of fragmented ground for the excavation equipment. Blast vibration models were developed to predict vibration levels for more sensitive areas of the dam to give the operators more confidence in their operations. The blast induced vibration levels recorded did not cause any structural damage to the dam wall and the waveform frequencies of the blasting operation were much higher than that experienced during a recent earthquake. The integrity of the SCAÆs assets were at no time jeopardised.

Largely inherited from the past and from strictly internal laboratory use, the certification of reference material using round-robin assaying is often insufficient for the use made today for external assay laboratory control by client parties. Certification often needs to be revisited on the basis of existing round-robin data, especially to derive reproducibility parameters to the end of establishing probabilistic performance gates for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch-ærejectionÆ). The most common difficulty arises when only a few certification samples have been analysed in one single batch by each laboratory, so that the round-robin data do not contain the full variability that needs to be quantified. Existing certification data sets from properly submitted round-robin samples were studied using analysis of variance to derive a remedial method, leading to the proposal of default correction factors to restore full variability estimates when no other avenue is available.

The Professional Standards Act responds to the growing problem of professional liability by introducing a mechanism whereby professional associations can have schemes approved. Those schemes include a cap on liability; a requirement for compulsory insurance; the development of risk management strategies; and the establishment of a complaints and disciplinary system. The Act is also designed to support and develop the concept of self-regulation by the members of occupational associations who provide services to the community by providing them with those tools. It implicitly accepts that self-regulation is preferable to statutory regulation and that self-regulation serves the interest of the community and of the providers of services. The Act arose from a review of professional liability commenced in 1988. The Attorney General's Department produced an Issues Paper, released in September 1989, which outlined in detail the extent of the problem. This was widely circulated and an extensive number of comment were received.

Attention is given to three possible alternative structures namely corporate joint venture, partnership joint venture and unincorporated joint venture. A corporate joint venture involves the formation of a separate and distinct legal entity with limited liability. The shareholders of the Company will be the members of the consortium. A partnership joint venture involves the members of the consortium joining a formal partnership. The partners will conduct the business in common with each other and will share the profits and losses of the project activities. The partners will be jointly and severally liable. An unincorporated joint venture is distinct from a partnership. The members of the venture will not be jointly and severally liable. Taxation and accounting aspects are examined and an outline provided of a typical joint venture agreement. The two main advantages of an unincorporated joint venture are considered to be a favourable treatment for income tax purposes and a greater degree of flexibility when compared with the corporate joint venture and the partnership joint venture.

The paper re-visits an old and proven concept of winzing, a method widely used in the past to gather exploration data for accurate definition of the orebody. It is proposed to use a mobile Supersucker (a giant vacuum cleaner also known as vacuum lift), to carry out winzing activities underground. A brief description of conventional underground winzing used in the past is provided, together with a discussion on other underground bulk exploration methods used in Australia to date. Historical background, principles of the proposed system, Supersucker construction details and productivities, and benefits and advantages of the proposed system in comparison with other exploration methods, are outlined. Other relevant applications of the mobile Supersucker, including surface winzing, are also briefly discussed in the paper. With a view of using the mobile Supersucker to recover all broken ore stocks underground, included are also results of floor sampling conducted recently in the in-stope decline excavated in a coarse gold type, high-grade orebody.

Why go to the CIS? The vast mineral potential of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has long been recognised, but it has taken the lowering of the iron curtain to open up the region to serious mineral development consideration by the Western World. The advent of a free market economy and the emergence of the Independent States with pressing needs for foreign investment has led to a greatly improved investment climate. Coupled with the desire for some of the more entrepreneurial resources companies to head the wave of investment to the region, this sequence of events has promised a great deal, but delivered only modest progress to-date. Potential gold project development has provided the major focus, for three reasons: the region is highly prospective for gold, gold projects tend to have a relatively lower start-up capital cost compared to base metal and fossil fuel projects and finally bullion or refined gold is more readily transportable and easier to sell.

By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.
