The disposal of mine waste continues to be one of the main controlling factors in the economics and feasibility of project development. Particular to gold and precious metal mining, waste disposal is further complicated by the environmental and political implications of the use of cyanide. Regulatory compliance criteria have partially dictated and can be anticipated to further dictate the approach and methods of tailings disposal. To develop practical, economic, and environmentally acceptable tailings disposal systems within these criteria requires the use of common sense approaches and the application of available technology. Waste disposal is typically considered during the pre-feasibility stages of project evaluation. At this time, the main emphasis is on the economics and practicality of extracting the metal values from the ore. Frequently, the result of this is that the nature of the tailings and the ability to dispose of the tailings is prejudged. It is also frequently the case, however, that during the feasibility stage and project permitting, the requirements for tailings disposal become paramount.

The concrete block industry can trace its beginnings to the early 18th century when most of the experimental work was being carried out in England. In America, the concrete masonry industry got started shortly after the Civil War and has had sometimes a spectacular, but always a steady growth since then. From a few hundred thousand concrete masonry units made in the late 19th century, the industry today produces approximately 3.3 billion concrete masonry units making it the largest industry in the United States for masonry wall materials. There were 3500 concrete masonry plants manufacturing these units after World War II. This nwnber decreased to 1500 by 1970 although the production of concrete masonry units increased by over 100% in the last 25 years. One of the reasons for this increase in production by less than half of the plants which once existed, is the tremendous strides made in automation of production machinery. The concrete masonry plant of today is probably one of the most automated small businesses in existence. Within a few years it will be possible to push a button and the entire manufacturing process will begin with no human hands touching the units until they are laid up in a wall at the manufacturing plant and are trans-ported to the job site. No other concrete product has reached this state of manufacturing sophistication and it is one of the reasons why the price of a concrete masonry unit is not much different than it was 2S years ago. Because of automation, it is safe to say that concrete masonry will remain a highly competitive building material for many years to come. The problems that beset the continued use of this material are not related to the cost of manufacturing and delivering the product. What are some of the problems as well as some of the opportunities and is the golden age of opportunity knocking rather than a wolf in disguise? The use of concrete masonry has grown each year because a larger unit was provided at less cost than other competitive materials. "It is widely known that steel made from iron ore pellets high in phosphorus is brittle. Removal of phosphorus from iron ores such as hematite has proven to be difficult. The majority of research on phosphorus removal from hematite ores has been focused on flotation. The purpose of this study was to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations at an existing hematite concentrator and determine how efficient the plant is at removing phosphorus. Objectives included: (1) Perform a phosphorus balance at an operating plant to assess phosphorus distribution under current operations; (2) Determine phosphorus removal efficiency of each separating unit and (3) Perform a quantitative liberation analysis to determine max phosphorus removal by physical means. Liberation was quantitatively determined using wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) to separate iron ore from liberated apatite (and other nonmagnetic compounds).It was observed that 61.2% of the total phosphorus entering Plant F was rejected during current operations. The desliming process was the most efficient step at removing phosphorus (45.1% P removed), whereas the flotation step was much less effective (16.1% P removed). Liberation analyses indicated that the deslime thickener may have been more efficient at removing phosphorus than the flotation circuit due to the greater abundance of liberated phosphorus in the deslime thickener feed. The scavenger returns stream was identified as having a high concentration of phosphorus and a possible point of phosphorus removal. However, liberation analyses indicated that only 32.4% of the total phosphorus in the stream was liberated. Grinding the scavenger returns to 80% passing 5.2 µm increased the amount of liberated phosphorus in the stream to 70.4%."

This paper reports on a newly developed system for teleoperation and autonomous tramming of LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) mining vehicles that not only increases the safety of the operators, but also has the potential to increase productivity.

Chemical and mineralogical data on 25 apatitic phosphate ores of diverse origins from commercial deposits around the world were widely variable. From 14 to 18 chemical constituents of each sample were determined, and each sample contained 4 to 10 mineral phases. Altogether there were 34 different mineral phases, many of which occurred in only one sample. The samples contained varieties of francolites, fluorapatites, and mixed hydroxyl-fluorapatites. The apatite compositions calculated from the chemical data showed that certain types of substitutions were characteristic of different apatite varieties, but every variety had some degree of substitution of (CO3)2 for (PO4)3 and the P2O5 contents of the apatites ranged from 35.1% for a North Carolina apatite to 41.9% for a Missouri apatite. In a concentrate with a grade of 32% P2O5, the North Carolina sample should contain about 8.7% gangue and the Missouri sample about 23.7% gangue. To optimize the digestion process of a phosphate are, it is necessary to consider the dissolution behavior of the different mineral phases during acidulation and the effects they may have on the chemical properties of a fertilizer intermediate. In the production of wet-process acids or superphosphates, the acidulation of certain minerals may cause foaming and formation of sludge, filtration, corrosion, and handling problems.

"Carbonic acid prepared on-site from carbon dioxide gas is widely used in water treatment and increasingly in some industrial applications. It has not seen extensive use in mineral processing but is an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid for pH control, with the need to counteract high pH levels caused by cemented backfill of particular interest. The fundamental chemistry of carbonate solutions as applied to flotation and flocculation circuits is described as well as plant-scale application. A project to introduce use of carbon dioxide for pH control at the Hecla Greens Creek lead-zinc-silver-gold operation is planned to begin operation in the first half of 2015. INTRODUCTION Flotation pH Control and Backfill Most sulphide flotation circuits are run at pH values ranging from slightly acid to strongly basic, with slightly basic pH the most common. Lead sulphide circuits are typically run at values from 7.5 to 9, with zinc circuits running at higher values of 9.5 to 10.5. This has been the case with ores that produce a natural pH in the circumneutral range, so that the pH needs to be raised. Although lime [Ca(OH)2] is the cheapest reagent in use to raise pH, soda ash (Na2CO3) or caustic soda (NaOH) are also employed where sodium ions in solution are preferred to dissolved calcium, or, in the case of soda ash, the presence of carbonate is desired. The use of soda ash for pH control in lead circuits has been widely recommended for many decades (1). The situation is necessarily different at operations where cemented backfill is used in underground mines (2). Backfill, whether emplaced as rammed paste or pumped slurry, is composed of mill tailings mixed with around 10% Portland or similar cement. When later mining occurs near or adjacent to previously backfilled areas, a considerable amount of old backfill is inevitably mixed with new ore and shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed can easily approach 20%, with periods of higher content not unheard of. The presence of so much backfill, with its high cement content, produces results largely indistinguishable from adding a large amount of lime to run-of-mine feed: mill pH in the grinding circuits can range above 11 and high concentrations of calcium ions are present. The need to raise pH disappears; the problem becomes to lower it."

Filter media can be defined as that material which effects the removal of finely divided solids from a fluid. Thus the removal of dust from air or turbidity from water, for example, can be the result of passing the fluid through a properly supported filter media. Since filtration in one form or another has been practiced since pre¬historic times filter media have been made from an extremely wide variety of materials. Vegetable and synthetic fibers (used loose, or formed into papers, felts or cloth) sand, ground coal, diatomite, perlite, wire cloth, porous metal, and bonded aluminum oxide are among the more important materials used today.

Refractory ores and concentrates containing silver tend to form Ag-jarosite during autoclave oxidation. Silver extraction from the oxidation products is therefore low, unless a hot lime treatment step to decompose Ag-jarosite precedes cyanidation. Since silver iodide is very stable but soluble in cyanide solutions, the formation and decomposition of Ag-jarosite in the presence of iodine species was studied. Results indicate that Ag-jarosite formation could be prevented in favour of H3O-jarosite and AgI while oxidizing Ag2S under industrial autoclaving conditions, when the total iodine species to Ag mole ratio exceeded 5. Lower ratios gave proportionally more Ag-jarosite and less AgI. Under these conditions existing Ag-jarosite was also found to decompose in H30-jarosite and AgI.

A computer-assisted resources and sedimentological study of the Andersonville, Georgia kaolin-bauxite district was begun in 1975 under a grant from the Office of Mineral Resources of the U.S. Geological Survey (Grant # 14-08-1110-G-173). A preliminary report on the kaolin and bauxite resources of the district has been placed on open file at the U.S.G.S. in Reston, Virginia; the Georgia-Geological Survey in Atlanta, Georgia; and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. In addition to a resources estimate, the objectives include the determination of the mineralogical variation, sedimentological parameters, and paleogeographic patterns of the deposition of the high alumina materials and their associated sediments. In the process of compiling data for the resources estimate, isopach maps were developed that provide information as to the shape, size, and distribution of the kaolin deposits and the kaolinitic sediments that contain them. These or similar maps developed for other districts can be useful exploration tools.

Two major Inco matte constituents, chalcocite and heazlewoodite, are separated by differential flotation with diphenylguanidine as collector. A new reagent system involving the use of dextrin as a modifying agent which provides better selectivity has been studied for the last three years. Adsorption tests reveal that while dextrin exhibits high affinity towards heazlewoodite, the adsorption isotherm for dextrin on chalcocite shows only weak interactions. Our electrokinetic measurements confirm such conclusions. Since dextrin interaction with solid surfaces seems to be especially strong when such surfaces are covered by hydroxide layer, our electrokinetic measurements are in line with other researchers' findings who postulated that copper hydroxide is not a stable product on the surface of copper sulphides.

The Grangcold Pellet Process - for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of countries - uses a hydraulic adhesive such as Portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold bonded iron ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago (1). In a report on the briquetting of iron ore fines, published in Stahl and Eisen 1959 (2), it is stated that briquettes bonded with Portland cement are used on a small scale at on ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet "recess has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrate during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus the mixture can he stored in a stockpile or in a silo until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening.

In 1986 the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that can substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards simply by relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM ongoing health and safety research efforts to reduce and control dust and noise and to reduce accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports progress of the research that is developing and will demonstrate the technologies required for the computer-assisted tele-remote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems, and roof bolting machines.

This subject was introduced last April in a paper presented in Birmingham, Alabama, by James E. Elkin, General Superintendent of Duquesne's Coal Department. This paper will cover some of the same data and in addition it will update and further describe our experience. Our Portal No. 3 was started in June 1965 with battery tractor-trailer face haulage. This mine is operating in the Sewickley seam in Dunkard Township, Greene County, in Southwestern Pennsylvania as shown on Fig. 1. The Warwick group of mines fronts on the Monongahela River and extends westward for some ten miles as shown on Fig. 2.

The removal of tritium from tritiated water (-0.5 µCiIL) was studied by metallothermic reduction using aluminum. The influence of the three variables namely the aluminum powder amount, the NaOH concentration and the reaction time has been studied on the tritium activity reduction. The experimental results and statistical analysis showed that more than 85% of tritium can be removed from the tritiated water. Further work on the tritium recovery as well as efforts to totally decontaminate water by incorporating a cryogenic concept is currently pursued.

Battery Electric Vehicles offer increased energy efficiency for open-pit load & haul operations at a potentially lower overall carbon cost. Electrifying a mine’s fleet, however, presents a unique set of operational challenges. In this study, we explore the effects of electrification on productivity at real operations using a Discrete Event Simulator. The model can simulate multiple shifts, a mixed fleet of diesel and electric trucks, charging and refueling stations, trolley systems, and accurate shovel-truck loading cycles. This study helps determine the trade-offs of adopting electric fleets and how they interact with the layout of today's mines.

The single line grinding circuit at Bond Gold's Colosseum mine consists of variable speed drive semi-autogenous (SAG) milling and secondary grinding with a fixed speed ball mill. There are several advantages and disadvantages of operating SAG mills with variable speed drives. Discussion in this paper will focus on the effects of variable speed SAG milling in relation to mill liner wear, grinding media consumption, and mill operating availability. Operating experiences, corresponding mill data, and pertinent design changes are also presented.

Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.

Using the newly developed and permitted explosive Pentadyne-HP (Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd., Hyderabad), the Blasting Department of the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Dhanbad experimented at the GDK-5 Incline, RG-1 Area of the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd. (SCCL) to establish one modified angular cut blasting pattern as an alternative to conventional solid blasting in India to obtain longer pull, as well as to achieve at least 40 t of coal in a single blast round for the deployment of diesel load-haul-dump units at the face. This permitted explosive satisfied the statutory requirements of incendivity characteristics applicable to P5 explosives of the regulatory agency Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) of India. The present paper summarizes the development of this new blasting pattern and its possible use in Indian coal mines.
