La metodologia tipica conlleva la selección de modelos, el ajuste o reajuste de los datos primarios, la selección de una estrategia de acoplamiento, la valoración de la precisión del modelo en un sentido estadistico, y el desarrollo de estructura de simulación ejecutiva. La simulación sirve de ayuda para los ingenieros de procesos para evaluar la viabilidad de un esquema de flujo propuesto y el efecto de la modificación de un flujograma ya existente. Por otro lado, la simulación juega un papel importante en la optimación "off-line" y en la evaluación de estrategias de control de circuitos alternativos. Son presentados varios ejemplos para ilustrar estas utilizaciones para la simulación, incluyendo aplicaciones en los circuitos de trituración, circuitos de molienda y circuitos de flotación. Es de opinión de los autores que, dentro de la próxima década, las plantas de proceso de minerales serán estudiadas rutinariamente a través de una simulación digital durante las etapas preliminares de diseño. A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

It is common practice when thermally drying coal from wet coal preparation facilities that the coarse +0.5mm fractions and fine fractions (-0.5mm) are combined and fed to a thermal dryer. There are very good reasons for this concept. The coal feed is much easier to handle in this condition for it is not as likely to stick inside the dryer or hang up in the material handling equipment, and is easier to feed and discharge. However, it is generally only the -0.5mm fines that really need to be dried. The +9.5m fraction of the cleaned coal will leave the dewatering screens, or drain and rinse screens, at an acceptable surface moisture, probably 5 or 5 ½ percent. The 9.5m x 0.5mm mesh fraction can be centrifuged to about 8 percent. The -0.5m fines can range from 18 to 22 percent or more, depending upon the type of equipment employed to dewater, and upon the size distribution within this size range.

With a view toward increasing its product competitiveness in the foreign market, SAMARCO MINERACAO S/A has developed high MgO type pellets at its pilot plant for performing direct reduction simulation tests. Additives such as dolomitic lime and magnesite were used for increasing pellet MgO content. Comparative direct reduction simulation tests were conducted both in SAMARCO and foreign laboratories. The test results showed that it is possible to produce direct reduction type pellets with satisfactory metallurgical properties, which can be successfully processed at increased temperatures in direct reduction furnaces.

1974 marked the start of a new era for Climax Molybdenum Co., a division of AMAX, with the initiation of an open pit operation above the existing successful underground block panel caving mine. A number of problems posed a challenge to the Climax open pit. Highly fractured rock, old mine workings, permafrost, and more than 7.6 m/a (300") of snowfall forced changes in normal operations. Final pit wall design was altered. Production bench heights were lessened due to old workings. These and other modifications contribute to a highly successful open pit operation.

The recent development of rare-earth permanent magnets has impacted the field of magnetic separation. The permanent magnets technology led to the advent of various magnetic separators particularly designed for application in mineral processing. In this paper, a new type of rare-earth PHGMS possessing a higher magnetic field strength in the working zone was developed using finite element analysis techniques. The NdFeB permanent magnets used had properties of 38 MGOe stored energy, and magnetic material flux levels exceed 1.2 T, The combination of scientific and engineering design and suitable matrices can offer an effective separation of industrial minerals, such as kaolin, feldspar, etc. Compared with conventional high intensity electromagnetic separators, the equipment can reduce electrical energy over 80% with lower operation and maintenance costs, and less installation space.

Pilot-scale tests indicate that effec¬tive concentration of fine gold from Colorado River sands can be achieved by flotation with the air-sparged hydrocyclone. The fine sands (55% minus 400 mesh and 0.01 opt*) from gravity concen¬tration were processed with a 5-cm air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity -1.0 tph dry solids). Concentrate grades as high as 5.0 opt were produced in a single stage at a recovery of 75.0%. The separation efficiency was significantly better than that achieved in conventional batch flotation experiments.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. The scope of this subject is a broad one. The demand for a metal with high refractory properties, great strength at elevated temperatures and high nuclear cross section, has put tungsten in the foreground as: the most promising metal to fill some of these requirements. Recently developed techniques have made it possible to roll large tungsten sheet and-the availability of fabricated tungsten is already upon us. More and more, the demand is for purer and still purer metals. Tungsten is no exception. As technology improves, we are learning more about the effect of foreign elements in minor amounts upon the chemical and physical properties of metals. As equipment and technology improve, specifications become more rigid, and reasonably so. Pure metals have revealed properties hitherto unknown in metals produced by former technology.

Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

Improvement of grade and recovery requires the use of optimum processing circuits. Critical to an optimum circuit is the set point for separation. With the introduction of the concept of circuit analysis (Meloy, 1982), it became possible to determine optimum circuits for a given task. No analysis, however, has yet been made as to the grade requirements of the larger circuits. Williams and Meloy (1982), reviewed the literature and concluded that, within the operating range, most unit operations involved in particle separation behave linearly. For the purposes of this analysis, linearity will be assumed. Grade, G, is defined as the weight of the coal mineral, C, that appears in the product, divided by the weight of the coal mineral plus the weight of the gangue mineral or waste mineral, Q, which appear in the product.

Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.

Acid mine drainage became a reality through the exposure of the first bituminous coal seam, either by man or by nature. At first the small amount of acid formed was quickly and efficiently neutralized by basic rock strata and by neutral or alkaline water. As soon as extensive mining operations overtaxed nature's own defensive measures, acid mine drainage became a problem of concern to government and the coal industry. It was the purpose of the studies conducted at Mellon Institute to accumulate knowledge, both applied and fundamental, relating to the formation and disposal of acid mine effluents. It was during this program that the microbiology of acid mine water was studied. Most bituminous coal mine effluents are highly acidic and contain, along with other ions, high concentrations of ferrous iron. The acid is sulfuric, and. the iron is present as the sulfate; both are the oxidation products of iron sulfides (FeS2) which are present in the form of pyrites, marcasites, or other sulfuritic minerals. The price records of 7 representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that, heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum)', and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their preeminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities. were selected before any price figures were compiled, none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends, The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the United States in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons, Two such comparisons have been made: (1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour's wage in each year; and (2) the unit price of each commodity through hhe years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts.

Despite the severe drought conditions that reduced farm requirements for industrial mineral products, most industrial minerals markets in 1988 continued their growth or, at worst, remained flat. Earlier projections of output declines did not materialize in most segments. Preliminary estimates of demand in Europe and Asia show strong growth for most industrial minerals. Profitability in industrial minerals in North America was best in those minerals that had a significant export market or were not strongly regional. Growth and price trends in the more regional industrial minerals markets in the US such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, and cement, more closely followed the broadly disparate regional economic conditions. For example, sand and gravel and crushed stone grew strongly in the Pacific Coast and northeastern markets but not as much as in the Southeast. Total growth for sand and gravel in 1988 is projected at about 3% above 1987 levels. Combined production is up about 27 Mt (30 million st) to 2 Gt (2.2 billion st). Following the relentless trend of foreign acquisition of US cement companies (currently about two-thirds are owned by foreign interests), several aggregate operations have been purchased by foreign companies. Notable among these in 1988 was the acquisition of Rinker Materials Corp. by CSR of Australia. The acquisition of this Florida-based aggregate and concrete operation will expand the current holdings of CSR in the southeastern US, with operations consolidated under the Rinker logo. In addition, Pike Industries of New England and J.L. Shiely Co. of Minnesota were significant aggregate producers that were acquired by foreign firms. New England's only cement manufacturer, Dragon Products, was acquired by a subsidiary of Cementes del Norte of Spain. Dravo continued to expand its influence in the lime and limestone markets. It became the major supplier of construction aggregates on the inland river system with its purchase of Cyprus Minerals' limestone aggregate operations in Kentucky, Louisiana, and Texas. Although lime production continued to grow from 14 to 15 Mt (15.7 to 16.7 million st) in 1988, lime imports decreased for the fifth consecutive year to 145 kt (160,000 st). In the more export-oriented industrial minerals markets, performance was generally very good for 1988. Soda ash enjoyed an excellent year, with its price up to $102.50/t ($93 per st). This reflected the tight market situation for soda ash, particularly in late 1988. Soda ash production in 1988 was 8.6 Mt (9.5 million st), reflecting the industry's improved efficiency. Particularly significant was the increase in caustic soda prices that led to increased substitution by soda ash. The export market remained at 2.1 Mt (2.3 million st). Phosphate production recovered to the 42 Mt (46 million st) level, a 12% increase despite a soft export market. The price, however, remained soft throughout the year. W.R. Grace sold its interest in its Florida phosphate mine and its phosphoric acid complex as part of its divestiture of the agrichemicals business. The strengthening of the major producers has continued as lower cost capacity has been idled. Future permitting of phosphoric acid facilities and development of reserves will be necessary to maintain current production levels beyond the mid- to late 1990s. Despite new developments worldwide in the titanium minerals market, strong demand has continued to apply pressure to price, with concentrate and slag prices going up. The demand for high quality slag as feedstock for pigment production has resulted in process improvements in South Africa (Richard's Bay) and in plans by Canada to import high quality ilmenite by 1991 to produce a 90% TiO2 slag. Although growth in industrial silica sand applications was small in 1988, concentration in the industry continued. Unimin continued to acquire silica operations. Unimin is now the nation's leading producer of granular silica. The end users of silica have consolidated further. Owens-Illinois purchased Brockway Inc., a leading container glass producer. Three companies now control 75% of the container glass industry. ECC continued to be an aggressive purchaser of industrial minerals operations throughout the world. It acquired Cyprus Minerals' calcium carbonate business as well as two operations in Italy. In addition, ECC continued its aggressive acquisition of kaolin (Australia) and aggregate producers. 1988 was a good year for industrial minerals markets worldwide. More importantly, though, it was a year that showed continuing consolidations of reserve ownership in the industry around the world. Barite AN. Castelli, Baroid Drilling Fluids Inc. US mine production of barite decreased 9.4% during 1988. Consumption (sold or used by grinding plants) increased by 37.9%. Imports are estimated to have increased by 21.2%. World mine production decreased by 9.8%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, fob mine, decreased 4.6%, according to the Bureau. The declared value cif US port of all imported ground barite during the first 10 months of 1988 increased from $37.16/t ($33.71 per st) in 1987 to $37.92/t ($34.40 per st), according to Bureau figures. Nevada continued to be the leading producer of barite with 72% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. The Bureau of Mines estimates 69% of US mine production was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The other 31% was used in barium chemicals, glass, or as a filler. The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

The "mass balance" is unquestionably the most common class of problems for the process engineer'. Closely related, mathematically, is the "heat balance". Every laboratory test requires a mass balance to describe the results. Mass balance calculations can be subdivided into several sub-categories based on whether the results are time dependant or not and depending on whether the input data are measurements that contain errors or are hypothetical values with no errors. Time dependent mass balances are dynamic process simulations and in addition to the conservation of mass constraints require kinetic data input. They are one step beyond simple mass balances.
