The important factors in any study of the screening of sand with a gravel envelope, as applied to use in oil wells, are: (I) sand size and shape, (z) gravel size and shape, (3) ratio of gravel size to sand size, (4) flow velocity, (5) viscosity of the fluid. Perhaps the first extensive investigation of the function of gravel in screening sand was performed by Coberly and Wagner,' from which the following conclusion was drawn: "The diameter of the largest grains in a single classified sand suitable for gravel packing is approximately 13 times the grain size at the ten-percentile analysis of the formation sample." ?;his applies to sands classified by Tyler screens and is for gravel grains of the maximum size that could be used to form a stable bridge. Field practice has shown that the screening effect of a given gravel for a given sand apparently varies with the flow velocity." Also, it has been assumed by some operators that the thickness of the walls of the gravel envelope surrounding the well has little effect upon the screening process. It is thought by others that a narrow envelope of gravel might form an ineffective screen. Thus the purposes of this work are: 1. To investigate the effect of gravel-sand size ratio upon screening action under the condition of varying flow velocities. 2. To investigate the effect upon screening action of varying the thickness of the gravel screen. 3. To investigate sand migration in the gravel screen and the effect of flow velocity and gravel size upon sand migration. Description of Apparatus In an attempt to reproduce field conditions for the purposes of this investigation, a flow tube was constructed, according to the manner of Urenj3 to represent a radial drainage segment of an oil sand. To arrive at the dimensions of the flow tube, a radial drainage segment of rectangular cross section was assumed to define an area of z sq. in. on the face of a well 6 in. in diameter. From this the dimensions of the segment were calculated out to a distance of 5 ft. from the face of the well. By computing cross-sectional areas at a number of sections along the rectangular segment and transforming these areas into the circular form, a drainage cone was obtained having everywhere the same cross-sectional area as the drainage element of rectangular cross section. To construct the apparatus, two sections of pipe of 7%-in. inside diameter, one 13 in. and the other 4 ft. long, were joined by a bolted flange. A mandrel having the dimensions of the drainage cone was centered in the pipe and a neat cement mixture was cast around it. A protective gasket was placed between the two sections of pipe so that the cement body could be separated at that point. When the mandrel was withdrawn a drainage cone was obtained (Fig. I).

IN the writer's opinion the term "block caving" has been rather loosely applied to a general principle of mining, and therefore detailed classification of caving methods and draw, together with the characteristics required for each method, will fill a desired need. Selection of caving method should be made only after a study of all governing conditions, such as size of orebody, lateral and vertical extent of ore-body, attitude, treatment demands, possible resultant pressures, and cost and profit comparison of methods. Successful caving methods can be classified under six main headings: (1) Full-protected block caving, (2) semi-protected block caving, (3) unprotected block caving, (4) full-panel caving, (5) half block-panel caving, (6) block-panel caving. The methods and factors governing choice of method are shown in Table I. Full-protected Block Caving Full-protected block caving consists of develop-ing, undercutting, and drawing to exhaustion a block of ore of predetermined size without coordination of mining or draw with adjoining areas. The block is mined and drawn as an independent unit (Fig. 1). Full-protected block caving demands that mining and draw cannot be done against unconsolidated capping in adjoining caved and exhausted blocks. Two sides of block are against solid. Caved capping must be allowed to consolidate for a suitable period, usually not less than one year. Pillars may be left in lieu of consolidated capping (Fig. 2). The advantages of full-protected block, caving are: (1) A definite area is developed, mined, and drawn as a unit so that all work may be completed, the block drawn to exhaustion in the minimum length of time, and the area then abandoned. (? Production is not restrained because of coordina1, on with adjoining areas. (3) Records of draw and caved reserve of ore are good. Upon abanwnment of the block, accountability for production is closed out with no carry-over to adjoining areas. The disadvantages of full-protected block caving are: (1) Side dilution from the draw adjacent to the consolidated capping may be serious, particularly where capping does not consolidate sufficiently in the allotted time. (2) Boundary weakening is needed on the solid sides of the block except in weak rocks. (3) Maximum cantilever and compression effect to aid caving and fragmentation may not be secured since the draw should proceed from the solid to the consolidated capping to minimize side dilution. However, undercutting from the loose (caved capping) to the solid with a slight initial draw in the same manner will develop cantilever effect. (4) A period of at least one year, more is usually desirable, must be allowed for caved capping ,to consolidate before mining the adjoining block, depending upon the characteristics of the capping. (5) Capping may not consolidate sufficiently in the time that can be allowed. Full-protected block caving is indicated where: (1) The ground is weak and heavy and workings

THE OLD Pueblo smelter is being dismantled after 43 years of continuous operation, from 1878 to 1921. It was built by Mather and Geist, on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River just below the, city of Pueblo. At the time of its construction Pueblo was considered a most favorably situated town for a custom smelter. Coal, coke, fuel, limestone, iron ore, lead, silver, and, gold ores were plentiful. It was a "downhill pull" from all directions to Pueblo. Labor, both common and skilled, was plentiful and efficient. Leadville was in bonanza and there were not sufficient furnaces in Colorado to handle the ore offered. The plant prospered from the start. It soon required more capital; so the owners; with the assistance of Thomas Nickerson of Boston, at that time prominent in the affairs of the A., T. & S. F. railway, formed the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. About this time, also, very heavy shipments of rich silver ore from New Mexico began to come in. Agencies were established for the purchase of ores in the most important mining camps in the country from Kingman, Ariz., to Butte, Mont. Highly siliceous silver-bearing ores from Butte were shipped to Pueblo in train loads. This was used chiefly in the concentration of leady mattes. RECOLLECTIONS OF MR. GEIST, FOUNDER OF PLANT Mr. Geist is living in Guadalajara and has sent the following brief letter: "Early in 1878 the firm of Mather & Geist, which had been operating in Utah and had then closed their smelter there, after diligent search for a new location selected Pueblo. We erected the first smelter in the valley, blowing in the first furnace in 1878. Mather & Geist carried on until January, 1882, when they transferred all their business to the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co., which had been organized in December, 1881. Full details of this transfer are given in the enclosed Report, which was issued early in 1882, for the purpose of interesting more capital, in which we succeeded admirably. "I personally did all the work of manager and super-intendent, some job in these days. My technical quali-fications were that I was a member of the class of 1866, Yale Sheffield Scientific. I was born in 1848, so was the youngest member of the class.

NO important discoveries of petroleum during 1932 are reported from Canada. New Brunswick, which has a small production from one field, was inactive, and the production showed a decline from 6600 bbl. in 1931 to about 6300 bbl. for the year 1932. The old fields in Ontario increased from 123,000 to about 131,000 bbl. Alberta showed a decline of more than one-third, from 1,413,631 bbl. in 1931 to about 913,000 bbl. in 1932. This decline was due principally to the restrictions placed on the flow of gas wells in the Turner Valley field, from which the crude naphtha is obtained that accounted for more than 93 per cent of the production of Alberta and for more than 80 per cent of the production of all Canada in 1932. The starting of new wells to the limestone that produces the naphtha-bearing gas was prohibited late in 1931, and only wells started before that time were finished during 1932. One well was drilled in the Turner Valley field to a depth of 7555 ft., establishing a depth record for Canada. It passed out of the Madison limestone at 5560 ft., and encountered showings of oil in the underlying formations, probably of Devonian age. Commercial production had not been established by the end of the year. Commercial oil wells were brought in in two areas in Ontario which had previously been considered as productive of gas only— in the Dawn gas field, Lambton County, and in Raleigh Township, Kent County. The discovery wells had initial productions of about 50 bbl. per day, but no production of major importance is indicated. In Alberta, outside the Turner Valley district, two wildcats were drilled northwest. of Lethbridge in the Keho Lake vicinity. Both failed to make commercial producers in the Madison limestone, but one was testing upper sands at the close of the year. Good showings of oil are reported. A very small production was found in the Madison limestone in a wildcat well on the Twin River structure southeast of Lethbridge and another well has been started near by on what is considered on geophysical evidence to be a better location structurally. About 15 locations were made on the Canadian side of the border north of the Cut Bank development in Montana.

The force exerted by unbroken surface waves on a cylindrical object, such as a pile, which extends from the bottom upward above the wave crest, is made up of two components, namely: 1. A drag force proportional to the square of the velocity which may be represented by a drag coefficient having substantially the same value as for steady flow, and 2. A virtual mass force proportional to the horizontal component of the accelerative force exerted on the mass of water displaced by the pile. These relationships follow directly from wave theory and have been confirmed by measurements in the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. The maximum force exerted by breakers or incipient breakers is impulsive in nature, reaching a value much greater than that produced by unbroken waves but enduring for only a short time interval. This impulsive force represents the ultimate development of the accelerative force and is produced by the steep wave front and large horizontal acceleration at the front of a breaker. This impulsive force greatly exceed. the drag force computed from the particle velocities of the breaker. The reader is cautioned that these preliminary results are applicable only to single piles without bracing and are likely to be modified somewhat where multiple piles are driven, one within the influence of the other or where multiple piles are connected by submerged bracing. This paper is essentially a preliminary report submitted at this time because of the current importance of wave forces in the design of offshore structures. An extended series of additional experiments is planned for the near future. Theoretical Relationships For the sake of simplicity of treatment, the theory will be developed from the equations for waves of small amplitude. Based on the Kirkendall frame of reference, a method is proposed for the determination of atomic mobilities of all the diffusing species in a multicorn-ponent system with a single diffusion couple. The method is based on an atomic mobility model developed on the concept of negligible interactions among the intrinsic fluxes. It is shown in the model that mobilities can be obtained directly from the cumulative intrinsic fluxes past the Kirkendall interface. The proposed method replaces the need for a prior determination of interdiffusion coefficients far the calculation of mobilities. Relations between intrinsic diffusion coefficients and mobilities are derived and the mobility calculations are illustrated with diffusion data in Cu-Zn-Mn alloys at 850°C. ThE concept of "intrinsic flux" with respect to a fixed lattice was introduced "i Darken1 to explain toa Kirkendall effect2 demonstrated by the motion of inert markers during isothermal diffusion in single-phase binary solid solutions. Based on this concept, intrinsic diffusion studies have been made in various binary metallic systems3,4 employing such a lattice frame of reference, commonly referred to as the Kirkendall interface. Similar approaches, both theoretical and experimental, have been presented5"10 to study intrinsic diffusion in multicomponent systems. Based on the direct integration of Fick&apos;s law extended to multicomponent diffusion, Philibert and Guy8 proposed a method for the determination of intrinsic diffusion coefficients. For an n-component system, this procedure requires an experimental study with (n — 1) diffusion couples, all having their Kirkendall interfaces at the same compositio;, where n(n — 1) intrinsic diffusion coefficients are defined. This technique has been employed for ternary diffusion studies by Dayananda and Grace" and Guy and Leroy.11 A different approach is recommended by Ziebold and Cooper,12 who have derived relations between interdiffusion coefficients and atomic mobilities employing fluxes referred to the local center of volume. Their analysis is based on the simplifying assumption of negligible interactions among intrinsic fluxes. This assumption has been considered satisfactory for dilute solutions.5"7 The use of this analysis for the calculation of mobilities requires an initial determination of interdiffusion coefficients with a set of diffusion couples having intersecting diffusion paths. It is the purpose of this paper to propose a method that would permit a direct determination of mobilities of all components of a multicomponent system from a single diffusion couple. This method is based on a mo- bility model developed with diffusion fluxes referred directly to the Kirkendall interface, generally identified by inert markers. gen erall, like that of Ziebold and Cooper,12 employs the simplifying assumption that the flux of each component relative to a fixed lattice is caused only by the driving force of its own chemical potential gradient. THE KIRKENDALL INTERFACE Inert markers are employed in diffusion couples to locate experimentally the position of the Kirkendall interface. They are initially placed at the weld interface for "sandwich" couples, or at the original vapor-solid interface for vapor-solid couples. Studies of marker motion in binary systems3&apos;4 with both types of couples indicate that markers remain in a plane of constant composition and move with this plane para-bolically with time. Parabolic marker movements were also observed in ternary Cu-Zn-Mn couples by Dayananda and Grace.10 It is reasonable to expect a similar marker behavior even for diffusion couples with a higher number of components.

IN many of the early investigations of the aging of titanium alloys, it was observed that the retained beta phase could be aged to a high hardness without an apparent change in microstructure; moreover, in some alloys it was found that even a very rapid quench produced beta having an anomalously high hardness. What appeared to be hard beta phase was designated as "beta prime," to distinguish it from the softer normal retained beta phase. Frost and co-workers&apos;.&apos; demonstrated that the increased hardness is caused by the formation of a metastable phase, omega, which can be identified from its X-ray diffraction pattern. This reaction also has been studied by Brotzen, et a1.,3 and the structure of the omega phase has been published by Silcock, et al.," and by Austin and Doig.3 The X-ray diffraction analysis by Austin and Doig indicated that omega is low in alloy content, approaching the composition of the stable alpha. The aging process proceeds by the path Thus, overaging results in the formation of alpha and the ultimate disappearance of omega. This is accompanied by a decrease in hardness and a recovery of ductility. The present work represents a study of the aging process in a high-purity Ti-6.4 Mn alloy, in which optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and hardness data were correlated. The specimens, 1/8-in. sections cut from 1/4-in.-diam rod, were heated in argon to a temperature just into the beta field (810°C), held for 1 hr, and water-quenched. The aging samples were heated in air for 1 hr at 300 to 500°C. The specimens were ground and mechanically polished, finishing with alternate etching and polishing on a slow-speed wheel to remove disturbed metal from the surface. The surface finally was swab-etched, rinsed with tap water, and air-dried. The etchant used was an aqueous solution containing 1 1/2 pct HF and 3 1/2 pct HNO3. This procedure is identical with that used for preparing metallographic specimens, except that the optimum degree of final etching required for electron microscopy may vary from that used for light microscopy. Metal replicas, backed with silica, were prepared from plastic strip-pings for examination with the electron microscope. Complete details of the procedures used for preparing these replicas are available elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows a comparison between the structures revealed by the electron microscope and those obtained by conventional light microscopy. Hardness and X-ray diffraction data are listed in Table I. No evidence of a second phase is apparent in the optical micrographs for the as-quenched sample, or for the specimens aged at 300 or 400°C; fine alpha particles can be seen in the specimen aged at 500°C. In the electron micrographs, visible equiaxed pocks appear in the as-quenched specimen, and, with increasing density, in the samples aged at 300 and 400°C. After aging at 500°C, the structure becomes markedly coarser and develops an oriented appearance of a second phase, coincident with the appearance of visible alpha particles in the light micrographs. These observations are confirmed by X-ray diffraction and hardness data. In these specimens, aged for 1 hr, the intensity of the omega pattern increases to a maximum at the 400°C aging temperature, corresponding to maximum hardness and the maximum density of pocks in the electron micrographs. At this point the beta phase shows a definite enrichment in Mn. At 500°C, little or no omega re-

It has been customary, in predicting saturation changes, to use the Leverett fractional flow formula", obtained by eliminating the unknown pressure gradient from the generalized Darcy equations for the separate phases. The formula presents difficulties in the case of counterflow, since the "fractional" flow may be negative, greater than unity, or, in the case of a closed system, infinite. Recently, it has been shown by several authors that the corresponding equations (with capillary pressure and gravity terms) for actual flow of the phase may be used just as well. These equations are in agreement with Pirson&apos;s1 statement that, if the two mobilities differ considerably from each other in a closed system, the flow is largely governed by the lower value. The present study was undertaken because of an apparent lack of experimental data on gravity counter-/low with which to test the theory. A 4-ft sand-packed tube in a vertical position was employed. Electrodes for determining saturations by resistivity were spaced along the tube, one phase being always an aqueous salt solution. Air, heptane, naphtha, or Bradford crude oil was used for the other phase. A reasonably uniform initial saturation was set up by pumping the phases through the system, alter which the tube was shut in and saturation profiles obtained at definite intervals. Cumulative flows over certain horizontal levels were obtained by integration of the distributions; hence, differentiation of the cumulative flows with respect to time gave instantaneous flow rates. To compare experimental and theoretical flow values, capillary pressures were assumed given by the final saturation-distribution curve. The upper part corresponds to the "drainage" region and the lower part to the "imbibition" region, where trapping of the nonwetting phase occurred. While calculations indicated that the capillary pressure saturation function and, probably, the relative permeability saturation functions changed during the segregation, the relation of the measured rates to saturation distributions are in general accord with the frontal-advance equation. It appears that the Darcy equations, as modified for the separate phases, are generally valid for counterflow due to density differences. The usual method of predicting saturation changes, which involves a continuity equation and the elimination of the unknown pressure gradient from the flow equations, should therefore be applicable. However, the need for advance knowledge of drainage and and imbibition "capillary pressures" and relative permeabilities during various stages presents difficulties. INTRODUCTION The present study was undertaken because of a seeming lack of experimental data relating to vertical counterflow of fluids of different densities in porous media. In particular, it was desired to determine whether data obtained from these laboratory tests were in accordance with certain mathematical treatments of counterflow which have been proposed. The gravity "correction" has been incorporated into the flow equations (and, hence, into displacement theory) nearly as long as both have been used. field4 and laboratory5 data have generally borne out the validity of the theory as applied, for instance, to downward displacement by gas, with all fluids moving downward. However, the modifications for counterflow have only recently been pointed out. 2-3 It has been customary to use fractional flow rates instead of actual flow rates in displacement calcuIations. In the case of counterflow, this results in negative values, values greater than unity and, when rates are equal and opposite, in infinite values. As pointed out by Sheldon, et a1,3 and by Fayers and sheldon,2 actual flow rates may be used just as well. The fact that these may be of opposite signs for the two fluids does not present any difficulty.

LAST year the authors presented a paper that discussed the various electrical measurements they perform in drill holes, which they name "electrical coring."&apos; The object of the present paper is to give a brief account of the points of scientific interest that have been elucidated by further field work and laboratory research, as well as the economic, results that have been attained recently. The practical examples given in this paper are drawn, for the most part, from the field work performed in Russian oil fields during the years 1931 and 1932. This is due to the fact that, thanks to the comprehensive cooperation of the Russian geologists and scientists, the authors are allowed to make public a large amount of recent information. In other countries in which the authors are engaged in similar work, the competi¬tion between private companies makes it imperative, for a considerable lapse of time, to avoid publication of the results obtained. The following points will be discussed successively, under sepa-rate headings: 1. Electrochemical phenomena in drill holes. 2. Stratigraphic correlations and tectonic studies. 3. Relations between the productivity of oil horizons and their electrical resistivity. 4. Location of coal seams. 5. Summary and conclusions.

SUMMARY This is a report of a new development in on-line particle size measurement of fine powders in dust-laden gases. A continuous sample of the solids-air suspension is drawn from the process stream via a sampling probe by means of an air operated ejector into a cyclonic separator whereby the sample is subjected to a particle size dependent separation process and split into two streams, "overflow" and "underflow". The overflow stream carries most of the fines at a relatively low concentration and the underflow stream carries the coarse particles at a relatively higher concentration. The concentration of solids in the two streams is detected by electrostatic noise level technique which utilises the electrostatic charge accumulated on the solid particles due to their high velocity in the turbulent air stream, for the mass concentration measurement. The ratio of the solids concentration of the fines stream to that of the coarse stream is then correlated against the average particle size in the main process stream by a calibration curve. The in-plant tests clearly indicate that this relatively simple instrument offers good sensitivity in the size range from 2 to 6 µm, and is capable of giving a continuous indication of average particle size for process control purposes. Although the instrument was developed for a particular application, it may be used in other situations where fine powders are conveyed in gas streams. British and foreign patents are applied for.

Studies of the effect of size of the specimen on the change of slopes of Stages I and 11 by surface removal showed that the change of Stage I was independent of size with respect to the polishing rate; however, the change in the slope of Stage 11 with polishing rate increased directly in proportion to the surface area. The removal of the surface during the test affected the plastic deformation characteristics of gold, aluminum, and zinc single crystals and polycrystalline aluminum. The apparent activation energy of aluminum was found to be decreased markedly by removing the surface during the deformation process. In previous papers1-3 it was shown that the surface played an important role in the plastic deformation of metals. By removing the surface layers of a crystal of aluminum by electrolytic polishing during tensile deformation, it was found that the slopes of Stages I, II, and III were decreased and the extents of Stages I and II were increased when the rate of metal removal was increased. By removing a sufficient amount of the surface layer after a specimen had been deformed into the Stage I region, upon reloading, the flow stress was the same as the original critical resolved shear stress and the extent of Stage I was the same as if the specimen had not been deformed previously. The slope of Stage I was decreased 50 pct and that of Stage 11 decreased 25 pct when the rate of metal removal was 50 X 10"5 ipm. These data show that in Stage I the work hardening is controlled almost entirely by the surface conditions, while in Stages 11 and III both surface conditions and internal obstacles to dislocation motion are important. It appears that during the egress of dislocations from the crystal, a fraction of them becomes stuck or trapped in the surface regions and a layer of a high dislocation concentration is formed. This layer would not only impede the motion of dislocations, but would provide a barrier against which dislocations may pile up. In this case, there will be a stress, opposite to that of the applied stress, imposed on the dislocation source and dislocations moving in the region beyond this layer. It has been found convenient to refer to this layer as a "debris" layer. The "debris" layer may be similar to the dislocation tangle observed by thin-film electron microscope techniques.4 Reported in this paper are the results of studies on the effects of removing the surface during plastic deformation on aluminum crystals of various sizes. The effects of the surface on the yield point behavior of gold and high-purity aluminum crystals as well as the creep behavior were also determined. The effects of surface removal on polycrystalline aluminum (1100-0 and 7075-T6) are also reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE For those portions of the investigation involving creep and tensile specimens, single crystals, having a 3-in. gage length and a nominal 1/8-in. sq cross section, were prepared by a modified Bridgman technique using a multiple-cavity graphite mold. The single crystals were prepared from materials which had initial purities of 99.997, 99.999, 99.999, and 99.999 pct for Al, Cu, Zn, and Au, respectively. The aluminum specimens for the size effect studies were prepared through the use of a three-tier mold in which crystals having a cross section of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 in. were grown from a common seed. The mold design was arranged so that one 1/2-in. crystal, two 1/4-in. crystals, and four 1/8-in, crystals of the same orientation could be cast. With this technique, it was possible to obtain only one set of crystals with the same orientation. Because of this limitation, it was not possible to determine both the changes of extent and slope of the various stages since a large number of crystals of the same orientation would have been required. Instead, only the change of slope as a function of the rate of metal removal was studied by abruptly altering the current density of the electrolytic polishing bath at various strains within the regions of Stages I and 11. The experimental techniques used for the tensile studies were essentially the same as those used previously.1,3 The specimens were deformed in a 200-lb Instron tensile machine, usually at a rate of 10-5 sec-5. Many heats of steel of low carbon value have been known to produce brittle pieces of steel. The brittleness is believed to be due to the impurities located within the grain boundaries. Such brittle steels have been examined with an optical microscope to ascertain the nature and the amount of the impurities present at the grain boundaries. Due to the relatively low resolving power of the optical microscope, the impurities are not visible in fine detail. The writer obtained some sheet steel and proceeded to determine the location of the impurities and to show the application of the electron microscope to the study of grain boundaries. One sample was known to be capable of becoming embrittled, whereas another sample was believed to be much less susceptible to embrittlement. Treatment of Specimens The specimens were embrittled by annealing above the A3 point under mildly oxidizing conditions. One piece of ingot iron could not withstand a 90" bend, whereas another piece of ingot iron was not affected and could withstand a 90" bend. The brittle piece was then annealed at a high temperature in a hydrogen atmosphere. The annealed ingot iron was termed cured and could withstand a 90" bend very easily. The three specimens examined will be designated as brittle, good. and cured in the discussion that follows. Procedure The sizes of the specimens were as follows: one piece of brittle ingot iron-3/8 by 35 in.; one piece of good ingot iron-96 by 1/8 in.; one piece of cured ingot iron-36 by 54 in. The specimens were too small to be polished by hand and therefore were mounted in bakelite. The polishing procedure was carried out in the conventional manner with the use of 1/0 through 3/0 papers, and the final polish was done with alumina on a billiard cloth. The specimens were then etched in a 4 pct solution of picral in alcohol, and then they were examined through an optical microscope. An area was chosen that showed distinct grain boundaries, and an effort was made to keep near this area when pulling the replicas REPLICA TECHNIQIJE The replica technique used in the preparation of the replicas for examination under the electron microscope is described in Electron Metallography.&apos; It consists essentially of the following steps: 1. Obtaining a suitably etched specimen. 2. Applying a swab of ethylene di-chloride on the surface. 3. Applying a formvar solution on the surface. 4. Placing a screen on any desired spot. 5. Breathing on the fornivar layer. 6. Applying scotch tape on the screen and film. 7. Pulling the film and the screen up with the Scotch tape. 8. Separating the screen from the Scotch tape. This replica technique is very similar to the one described by Harker and Shaefer. However, with the added step, the percentage of replicas removed is very much higher regardless of the length of the time from the etching of the specimen to the actual pulling of the replica. The replicas were then shadow cast with manganese at a filament height to replica distance ratio of 1 1/2:7. This produced a very high contrast replica for use in the electron microscope. One of the dificulties encountered with this study was the restricted area of the specimen. The width of the specimens was the same as that of the 200 mesh nickel supporting screen. In order to increase the effective area, the screens were cut down as shown in Fig 1. The arrow indicates the direction in which the replica was pulled. This operation made it possible to obtain a large percentage of good replicas. Fig 3 shows an electron micrograph of a brittle piece of ingot iron and a grain boundary that was polished mechanically. The surface is very rough probably due to the incomplete removal of the flowed layer by the picral etchant. The grain boundary does show evidence of impurities. It was decided to electropolish the specimens to obtain a much smoother surface than the one obtained by mechanical polishing. ELECTROPOLISHING The specimens were cut in half to expose the metal on the back side. The exposed metal had sufficient area to make good electrical contact and electropolishing was carried out easily. The conditions for electropolishing were 0.9 amp, 35 volts, and 25 sec. in an electrolyte composed of 850 cc of ethyl alcohol, 100 cc distilled water, and 50 cc of perchloric acid. The effect of calcium, magnesium, iron (both ferrous and ferric) and aluminum ions, which are commonly encountered in a typical beryl ore, was studied in the flotation of pure beryl, soda-feldspar and quartz. The vacuumatic flotation technique was employed. With sodium oleate as collector and in the absence of any activator, beryl floated in a pH range of 3 to 7.5, whereas feldspar and quartz did not float at any pH up to 11.5. The pH range of flotation increased in the presence of the ions studied. With calcium and magnesium ions beryl floated from 3 to 11.5 pH and beyond, soda-feldspar floated beyond pH 6 and quartz floated beyond pH 8. Ferrous ion activation was found to be similar to that of calcium and magnesium. Activation by ferric and aluminium ions was found to be complex and the lower and upper critical pH for all the three minerals was around 2 and 10 respectively. These studies indicated the possibility of separation of beryl from feldspar and quartz even in the presence of calcium, magnesium and ferrous ions between pH 4 and 6. Flotation tests on a mixed feed of pure minerals in a 10 g cell revealed that beryl can be selectively floated from feldspar and quartz if ferric ion is reduced to ferrous state or if it is complexed. Beryl occurs mostly in pegmatites, and hence is associated with feldspar, quartz and micas and small amounts of other minerals such as apatite and tourmaline. The separation of beryl from these minerals is difficult because all the silicates accompanying beryl have more or less the same physical properties. Specific gravities of beryl, feldspar and quartz are 2.70, 2.56 and 2.66 respectively. Electrostatic separation has been suggested but no work has been reported. &apos; The adsorption of sodium tri-decylate tagged with Cl4 on beryl, feldspar and quartz reveal similarity in surface properties. Much work has been reported on the flotation of beryl from ores, either directly or indirectly as a by-product, but little is known about the fundamental aspects of beryl flotation. Kennedy and O&apos;Meara3 laid emphasis on prior cleaning of the mineral surfaces with HF. Mica is removed first by flotation of beryl with oleic acid, around neutral pH. Runke4 introduced calcium hypochlorite conditioning in a final separation stage for activating beryl in a mixed beryl-feldspar concentrate, and after washing to remove the hypochlorite, floated beryl with petroleum sulphonate. The Snedden and Gibbs5 procedure is somewhat similar to that of Kennedy and O&apos;Meara. Emulsified oleic acid is used as collector. Recently Fuerstenau and Bhappu6 studied the flotation of beryl, feldspar and quartz with petroleum sulfonate in the presence of activators and stressed the importance of iron in the flotation of beryl. From the studies conducted in this laboratory, it was found that feldspar and quartz as such do not float with sodium oleate, but in practice selective flotation of beryl from feldspar and quartz in an ore is found to be impossible with sodium oleate as collector. A glance at the chemical analysis of typical beryl ore indicates the presence of several ions like Ca ++, Mg++, Al + + + and Fe+++ in abundance and Ti++++ and Mn++ in traces. Hence, in an attempt to explain the behaviour of feldspar in the beryl flotation, the effect of Ca++, Mg++, Al+++ and Fe+++, which are known as gangue mineral activators7&apos;8 has been investigated. Materials and Methods: Lumps of beryl ore (hand picked) were boiled with 10% sodium hydroxide and washed with distilled water. They were further boiled many times with 10% hydrochloric acid till no positive test for iron was obtained with ammonium thio cyanate. This was followed by thorough flushing with double distilled water. The lumps were crushed in a porcelain mortar and pestle under water. The minus 65 + 100 mesh fraction was used for testing and was always stored under distilled water. Pure feldspar and quartz were similarly prepared and the minus 65 + 100 mesh fractions collected. Inorganic ions tried as activators were ca++, Mg++ , Fe++, Fe ++ and A1 +++ . Calcium nitrate, magnesium chloride, ferrous ammonium sulfate, ferric ammonium sulfate and aluminum nitrate of G.R.E. Merck grade were used. B.D.H. technical grade sodium oleate was used as a collector. The vacuumatic flotation technique developed by Schuhmann and Prakash was used for studying the effect of pH on flotability. 7 The indications given by this work were confirmed by using 10 g miniature cell.&apos;

NORRIS, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-For many years the power requirements of breakers designed in the Anthracite. Region have been based on calculations made from indicator diagrams taken during operation, with various sections of machinery idle; these, while giving reasonably accurate figures, gave no intimation of the peak loads which have been shown so clearly in the paper. The high-speed flywheel for breaker rolls is new and shows a remarkable saving in peak power required, besides eliminating the stalling of the rolls from overload. The figures given are so far in advance of anything previously published that they will undoubtedly be used as a basis for future breaker design. It is to be hoped that the authors will continue this investigation and extend their paper by a description of the motors found best suited for this work. WILLIAM KENT, Montclair, N. J.-I notice on p. 187 reference is made to one of the difficulties being the starting torque, and it is proposed to use roller or ball bearings in order to decrease the high starting torque. I suggest that. before the roller or ball bearings are put in, an investigation be made as to the amount of the starting torque, as shown by wattmeter measurements and as to what the starting torque ought to be, theoretically, according to the energy formula; that is, how much starting torque is required to accelerate the rotating mass in a given number of seconds up to full speed. Having secured this information it may be found the amount to be saved by roller bearings is not very great. If it appears that roller bearings will not greatly decrease the starting torque, the next thing to be done is to have a special design of motor in which there is a field that can be made very strong at the start, by the use of extra poles or other means, and the next thing that may be done is to increase the speed from 10,000 r.p.m. to 25,000, which can be done with wire-wound flywheels, especially if the wires are made of vanadium steel.

On the map of Europe the shield-shaped area included in the boundaries of Rumania appears too small to constitute a very important factor in the wold&apos;s oil production. The country has a total area of 122,000 square miles of territory, about one-fifth of 1 per cent. of the world&apos;s surface, from which about 21/2 per cent. of the world&apos;s oil was produced in 1929. This relatively small area also constitutes one of the known billion-barrel reserves of the world. Oil has been found in various localities in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, extending more than 100 miles in length at their base. It is rather unusual that, while the extent of prospective territory seems to be large, the area of the commercially productive pools is comparatively small. Oil accumulation in Rumania is closely associated with salt stocks. Shows of oil are encountered from the Pliocene down to the Cretaceous. Most of the production, however, comes from the Pliocene, the chief producing sands of which are the Dacic and the Meotic, although some oil is produced from the Levantic and the Pontic. The Meotic as a source of oil was known for many years, but the intensive output from this sand series is a comparatively recent development and accounts in a big measure for the steady increase in Rumanian production. In the early part of the summer of 1929 the Astra-Romano (Royal Dutch) completed a well at Moreni in what is thought by some to be a fourth Meotic sand (a new sand series) at a depth of 5200 ft. with an initial production of 2000 bbl. a day of 41" gravity oil. The development of this new horizon has been somewhat retarded by the disastrous fire which occurred at Romano-Americana&apos;s well No. 160 in Moreni, but its discovery adds materially to the future life of the Moreni area, one of the country&apos;s oldest fields. Rumania&apos;s production for 1929 is estimated at 35,556,000 bbl., a daily average of 97,400 bbl. This compares with the total of 31,542,000 bbl. for the previous year, a daily average of 86,180 bbl., or an increase of 12.73 per cent. Rumania now occupies seventh position in the world&apos;s oil picture, it having been replaced as the sixth in importance by the Dutch East Indies in 1929. Table 1 shows a comparison of production by districts and fields.

During the past year or two considerable time and money have been spent in developing equipment for tubing large-volume high-pressure oil and gas wells without loss of production. That the efforts have met with success is proved by the fact that any properly cased well, regardless of its production or regardless of its rock pressure or working pressure, can now be safely tubed with no appreciable loss of production, provided experienced crews handle the new equipment. It is conceded that a far better gas-oil ratio can be secured by flowing a well through tubing of a proper diameter—the diameter of the tubing depending, of course, upon the volume of fluid and gas and the depth of the well—than by the more usual method of installing a choke at the mouth of the well. Where possible it is becoming the practice to bring wells in through tubing, though in the majority of instances this is not feasible. In many instances it has developed, after a well has been brought in through tubing, that the tubing installed is either too large or too small for the most efficient operation or that the well had not been drilled deep enough. The equipment described in this paper, in the hands of experienced men, permits the tubing of these wells after they have been brought in, with the size of tubing then determined by actual observation to be best suited for each particular well, and with no danger of the well getting out of control, of catching fire, of drilling itself deeper, or of any loss of production. The deeper the flowing production with the consequent future higher lifting costs, the more essential it is that the size of tubing used be such as to give the best possible gas-oil ratio. The ability to bring in these deep wells through the casing and then, immediately after their completion, regardless of volume or pressure, to tube them with the size of tubing that permits the most efficient use of the gas present will doubtless save many dollars. Uses for the New Equipment The equipment permits a further step in the operation of wells where the conservation of gas is of major importance. Perhaps 3-in. tubing

Well designed density instruments are very accurate and give an excellent record of the steadiness of the operation. Controlling the density of a pulp with an instrument, as described by Mr. Bean, is new and the experiences in developing this controller at the American Cyanimid Co.&apos;s Mineral Dressing Laboratory are very interesting and should be extremely helpful to others who are planning on designing or installing controlling density instruments. Instruments for recording the density of the classifier overflow or flotation feed are rather common in ore concentrators, but there are a number of profitable uses for these instruments that are not too well known. Density recorders with bubble tubes submerged to different depth in a classifier pool give an excellent record of the classifier operation. The loading and unloading of the machine, that is so easily masked in the density of the overflow, can be easily recorded if the instrument is installed at some depth in the classifier pool. On some occasions, two instruments with bubble tubes at different depths give a more candid picture of the irregularities in the classifier operation. When cleaner machines are operated in closed circuit with roughers, a record of the density of the cleaner tails will indicate the circulating load in the circuit and is very helpful in coordinating different operators, because quite often the circulating load will be increasing for some time before the analyses of the products will change. Density recorders are used to record the variations in the dilution of the underflow from thickening tanks and in at least one plant the instrument controls the underflow.
