Lead alloys function effectively as oxygen evolving anodes in copper SX-EW operations and are highly resistant to corrosion. The presence of organic from solvent extraction in the electrolyte seemed to enhance solution line attack. Laboratory tests showed that lead is soluble in D2EHPA, Acorga and LIX 984 to a limited, yet measurable degree. Lead alloys and various lead phases formed on the anode were tested to evaluate their effect on the corrosion process in organic media. Possible causes for anode corrosion and mechanisms responsible for their initiation will be discussed.

"Man-Made Parameters" refers to the importance of selecting appropriate analytical procedures to acquire useful chemical data. The correct procedures are particularly critical at the sample preparation stage where decisions concerning pulverizing equipment, sample size, contamination and dissolution will impact on the final results independent of the instrumental method of analysis. Several experiments were designed to quantify the impact of these approaches.

This paper discusses the drilling techniques and equipment used by Loffland Brothers Company to drill the AEC's UC-3 large diameter shaft in Nevada. Included are pictures and illustrations of the drilling-mud circulating system, the surface and downhole drill-string and the special heavy-duty mast and hoisting equipment required to do the job. The purpose and method of lining the large diameter holes along with the technique and materials used to backfill the lining to hole annulus are discussed briefly. Areas requiring improvement in both equipment design and technology for large diameter shaft drilling are discussed briefly. Shafts as large as 140 inches in diameter to depths of 5,000 feet can be drilled with existing equipment and technology.

Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

Introduction Mining has always been sensitive to the fluctuating income of downstream customer industries. The industry is now becoming more vulnerable to booms and busts as economic pulsations increase and demand for mining products shows little or no long-term growth. As the general economy has become more cyclical in the last decade, the capital-intensive primary industries have become more aware that timing as well as preparation of survival plans are vital in investment decisions. Strangely, however, some of us have not yet included the business cycle in our feasibility studies. Cyclic prices and volumes and fluctuations in profits and cash flows do not fit our linear models. The increased cyclical nature of our economy is recent and poorly understood. Forecasting peaks and troughs is still more an art than a science. Nevertheless, avoiding business cycle parameters can lead to error in value estimation and contingency planning of new projects. Metal and Mineral Industries More than half the iron and steel, aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, manganese, tin, nickel, molybdenum, cobalt, and chrome that we mine, smelt, upgrade, and recycle goes to construction, transportation, capital goods, and consumer durable industries. All are cyclical. Their products are consumed slowly, so replacement can be postponed in recessions. Purchases of such goods are usually financed by debt, and their customers are sensitive to highly cyclical changes in interest rates. During prosperous periods, people tend to buy capital goods despite high interest rates. Upstream industries also tend to be whipsawed by inventory cycles. With high interest rates and good transportation, downstream fabricators can lighten their inventories during recessions. They know that upstream suppliers can deliver supplies and raw materials immediately, And, with the advent of electronic accounting, the fabricator with timely inventory information can afford to hold fewer contingency stocks. Likewise, when recovery returns, inventories surge back through industry pipelines, accelerating demands on primary supplies. The price elasticity of most primary products is low. Their share of the value of finished products of the industries they supply is generally small. The 60 kg (130 lb) of aluminum in a car is vital. But whether it costs $80 or $130 will not visibly influence the demand for an automobile. With low elasticities of demand, the primary producer is hit with decreases (or increases) in prices and in sales volume, during recessions as well as recoveries.

Introduction Mine operators are interested in energy conversation in two ways. With our finite sources of energy, we are concerned for future generations. In addition, as mine operators, we want to minimize energy costs. Moving material represents a substantial amount of the energy used in mining operations. Wheeled vehicles are used extensively to move materials. And they derive all their energy from fuel. Energy is also required to overcome the vehicle's inertia, and internal and external frictional forces. Included in the vehicle's frictional forces is its suspension. Tires are an important part of this suspension. What influence do tires have on the overall fuel consumption of the vehicle? Does tire construction affect this influence? As far back as 1896, it was apparent that tires were a factor in fuel consumption. A test was devised in France using a coal-fueled steam-driven auto. The test measured whether there was any fuel savings with the new pneumatic tires rather than of the then commonly used solid tires. The result was a 28% savings in water and a 29% savings in coal on pneumatic tires. Today, the pneumatic tire is accepted, but there are differences in present constructions. Tire Construction: Bias vs Radial There are basically two types of tire construction, bias and radial. Bias tires have been around for about 60 years. Radial tires are more recent. They were developed to improve a tire's ability to withstand higher speeds and loads, as well as to improve tire life and vehicle handling. Another advantage of the radial tire is its lower rolling resistance. This characteristic results in lower fuel use by a vehicle. This has been demonstrated with passenger cars and over-the-road trucks. It is now being demonstrated with earthmoving equipment. A basic description of both types of tire construction should now be reviewed: The casing of a bias-ply tire is made up of crisscrossed textile plies or layers. The cords of these plies run on a bias, from bead to bead. The cords of each ply run on an angle relative to the cords of the adjacent plies. As the tire rolls and deflects, the angle between the cords changes, like the blades on scissors (Fig. 1). The cords of one ply pull one way, and the adjacent ply pulls another, straining each other. As productivity improvements reduced the number of continuous miner sections from seven to three while maintaining full productive capacity, a decision was made to test an advancing tailgate ventilation system on the shortwall mining section. Having the shortwall mine its own return air system has freed the third mining section for more productive, less costly mining. The advancing tailgate has provided effective ventilation across the face and gob with acceptable pressure losses. The tailgate development continuous miner section has been since transformed from a low productivity part-time function to a high productivity development/retreat panel and is available for long term mine development duties also.

The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

The report shows the sensitivity that nine different cash-flow factors have on the discounted rate of return calculated from feasibiliity- studies on potenital open-pit orebodies of silver, copper, and uranium. Cash-flow factors of "grade", "market value", and "recovery" are. the most sensitive. This verifies the need of reliable estimates for these factors. The cost of evaluation of "preproduction cost" is the least sensitive. This gives credence to the fact that more consideration should be given to compiling sufficient data, as the largest financial losses are not in the cost of evaluation but rather in the abandonment of an unprofitable mining operation after a commitment of capital is made on the basis of an incomplete evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of cash-flow factors enhances evaluation programs by disciplining the collection of data and allowing more realistic distribution of evaluation monies.

The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.

The ninth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Minneapolis, MN. A total of 33 students presented their work at the contest. The competition began in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes. The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the contest. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and, as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates, and the prizes are designated accordingly. At the graduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third through seventh $200 each, and all others $125 each. At the undergraduate level, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, third place $250, and all others $125 each.

Elemental sulphur occurrences are widely distributed in two geological environments: -1-Basins containing hydrocarbons and zones of Cenozoic vulcanism. However, very few of these constitute deposits large enough to be of commercial importance. Almost all of the elemental sulphur mined in the world comes from bioepigenetic deposits in petroliferous basins. These deposits occur in two general structural styles: diapiric (salt domes) and stratiform. Examples of diapiric deposits occur in the Gulf Coast basins of Texas, Louisiana, and southern Mexico. Examples of stratiform deposits occur in the Fergana and Amudarya depressions of Central Asia, the Mesopotamian Depression in Iraq, the Cis-Carpathian Trough in Poland and Russia, and the Permian Basin in Texas. Economic bioepigenetic sulphur deposits range in size from approximately 1 million tons of sulphur in the smaller salt dome deposits to more than ZOO million tons of sulphur at the Mishraq stratiform deposit in Iraq. Total world production from bioepigenetic deposits amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sulphur per year, one-half of the world's present annual consumption of elemental sulphur. Most of the balance of the annual consumption is recovered from sour gas and petroleum. All bioepigenetic sulphur deposits share remarkably similar origins and characteristics. They are formed by anaerobic bacterial replacement of gypsum or anhydrite in tilted basins where evaporite beds are underlain by petroleum. Figure 1 illustrates a generalized cross-section of a salt dome sulphur deposit. Figures Z, 3, and 4 are cross-sections of three types of stratiform sulphur deposits. In terms of sulphur genesis, the only significant difference between the salt dome and stratiform deposits is that the positioning of the anhydrites above the petroleum in the salt domes is caused by diapiric rather than sedimentary processes. In the salt domes, the residual anhydrites of the cap-rocks are accumulated by solution and removal of halite by artesian ground waters.

Mining in Mexico is one of its post traditional activities, whose influence in the development of important cities and communications has been decisive. Precious metals and, to some extent, copper and tin were known and used before the Colonial period, but from the sixteenth century to tie end of the nineteenth century, mining and metallurgical industries were concentrated in the precious metals, mainly silver. This silver was exported to Spain and other countries under the Spanish. Rule, Mexican peso was known world wide since the end of the sixteenth century and Mexico ranked as the first silver producer since the eighteenth century.

Mining coal under deep cover conditions is certainly the proper phrase to use in describing one of our newest operations. Located in the southwest corner of Virginia is this operation which is the Beatrice Mine of the Beatrice Pocahontas Company, a joint venture of Republic Steel Corporation and Island Creek Coal Company. The mine is working in the No. 3 Pocahontas seam in an assigned area of over 9500 acres containing over 60 million tons of recoverable, high quality, low volatile coal. The site of the mine opening was at Keen Mountain, Virginia, where the seam lay 1350 feet below the surface. This depth, greater than anything attempted thus far in the coal industry on this continent, would pose some problems, we felt, with which we had not previously had to contend.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. It is well established that the results of emulsion flotation in which water-insoluble oily collectors are utilized depend critically on the emulsification of the collector and on its conditioning with the pulp prior to flotation. The flotation tests carried out with magnesite and fluorite using sodium oleate as collector confirmed acidic and alkaline ranges of good flotation. While the flotation results in the acidic solutions depend strongly on the conditioning time and can be very much improved when longer conditioning times are utilized, the tests in the alkaline environment do not exhibit any significant dependence on conditioning. The results obtained with sodium salts of myristic and lauric acids confirm these findings. The observed effects provide additional evidence for the role of the colloidal species which appear in the acidic solutions of weak electrolyte type surfactants, such as fatty acids. The flotation properties of sodium oleate in the pH region in which it appears in the form of oleic acid droplets are mainly determined by the properties of such droplets. The flotation in this pH region closely resembles an emulsion flotation.

A three-dimension two-phase (air and dust) computer model was developed to model air velocity and respirable dust distributions in the longwall faces. This paper describes the derivation of the model including the model features, mathematical equations and boundary conditions. Example simulations were also performed for two longwall faces where measured respirable dust and air velocity distributions were available. The results indicated the model can simulate the mine conditions fairly accurately.

Fine coal refuse is often pumped, as slurry, into surface impoundments as a means of permanent disposal. As the available volume is filled, the height of the embankments are frequently increased. Many times the additional embankment material is placed upon consolidated fine coal refuse. There has been some concern about the long-term effect of consolidation of this material at or above the liquid limit upon its shear strength. A laboratory investigation was performed using three different types of fine coal slurry taken from Central Appalachian coal preparation plants. The refuse was consolidated in 10-foot plexiglass columns under incremental amounts of surcharge loading. The incremental loads were designed to simulate the effect of increasing the height of a refuse embankment on top of the consolidating coal slurry. After the refuse in the columns had consolidated for several months, the columns were cut apart and triaxial tests were performed on both the consolidated material and unconsolidated material for comparison of their shear strength parameters.

To fully utilize a ventilation simulator as a planning and production tool, the network database must keep pace with mining progress. By using AutoCAD's™ attribute-definition function, the branch data and node coordinates can be stored as part of the branch-diagram file and updated with the drawing. Attributes are drawing entities that contain text which can he extracted in a standard spreadsheet format or as an ASCII text file. The data can be subsequently loaded into a ventilation simulator. This paper presents the methodology for using AutoCAD's™ attribute feature in a ventilation simulation format.
