The Divide mining district occupies the center of a Tertiary caldera hosting the famous Divide silver lode and the crosscutting Gold Mountain mines. The northwest-southeast trending silver lode hosted ore with typically a 100:1 silver:gold ratio, high molybdenum content and argillic alteration dated at 16.5 m.y. within the Fraction Tuff. The east-west trending Oddie Rhyolite flow dome at Gold Mountain experienced possibly several periods of resurgence with repetitive silicification, brecciation and attendant precious metal deposition forming stockwork type mineralization. Silver-gold ratios average 10:1 for the mineralization phase of this 16.4 m.y. intrusive event. Similar chalcedonic mineralization registering a 3:1 silver:gold ratio cements conformable breccias within the Oddie Rhyolite basal flows unconformably overlying the Siebert Tuff on the northern flanks of Gold Mountain. Gray and red chalcedonic breccia matrix in the King Tonopah member of the Fraction Tuff contains a 50:1 silver :gold ratio.

Information Technology has addressed those problems unique to senior management in the mineral industry. In general, these problems are those concerned with decision-making. Peter Drucker in his discussion of making effective decisions identifies five phases: (1) define the problem, (2) analyze the problem, (3) develop alternate solutions, (4) decide the best solution, and (5) convert the decision into effective action. The scope of the chapter by Guernsey addresses the first three phases which provide input to the decision-maker. The decisions to be made relate, in most instances, to the economics related to a mineral property or process. Computer models have been designed to generate these economic and financial evaluations. No one model is appropriate to the solution of all management's problems. In this chapter several applications are identified and summarized; a model for the economic evaluation of a mineral property is described in greater detail. The implementation of such models is dependent on the unique needs of management.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

The accumulation, handling, and utilization of sludges formed from wet process phosphoric acid is one of the major problems in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explain some of the considerations and techniques that can be employed to provide some measure of control over the problem. An acid made from a Central Florida phosphate rock is used to illustrate the effects of one process design approach used to provide one type of control. Other approaches or techniques are discussed on a general basis. In every case, the discussion is purposely limited to conventional dihydrate processing in which phosphoric acid is produced from the filter at a strength of approximately 30% P205 and is subsequently concentrated to higher strengths such as 44 and 54% P205.

Refractory gold ore pretreatment processes continue to receive much attention. This paper compares the relative economics of treating ores by oxygen pressure oxidation, roasting and bacterial oxidation with or without preconcentration by froth flotation. Capital and operating cost estimates for each method of pretreatment were prepared and these estimated costs and ore sulfide grades then are used to compare the process economics. The study indicates that the most significant item affecting the economics is the amenability of the ore to flotation. The cost benefits of flotation are $10-13 per tonne ore processed (2%-4% s=, 10:1 ratio of concentration). In most cases bacterial oxidation has the lowest overall cost, especially if less than complete oxidation of the sulfides will give acceptable recovery, however bacterial oxidation has yet to be practiced on a large scale. In all situations pressure oxidation shows the highest cost. However, the cost differences between the treatments are small, less than $7 per tonne.

Introduction Charles III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, established one of the first mining schools in Europe on June 22, 1735, in Selmecbanya (Schemnitz in German and Banska Stiavmica in Slovakian). The old city, built around the ancient gold mines, is shown in a contemporary engraving in Fig. 1. Charles' historical decree consisted of 13 chapters and included: the deed of foundation, the definition of grants, instruction for educational policy and curriculum, disciplinary rules, and the appointment of personnel. The first professor of the school, Samuel Mikoviny, gave his first lecture the same year, in December 1735. The 250th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Mines was celebrated Sept. 2-4, 1985, in Miskolc. It was attended by representatives of other Hungarian and of several foreign technical universities. A silver medallion (Fig. 2) was issued to commemorate the occasion and a series of lectures

Knife River Coal Mining Co.'s Beulah Mine is a multiple-seam lignite operation located in western North Dakota. The mine began production in 1963 with annual production of 450 kt (496,000 st). It now produces 2.2 Mt/a (2.4 million stpy). As development progresses, operations advanced into more complex geologic areas. Various techniques have been analyzed to maximize coal recovery in a cost-effective manner. Additional studies are ongoing to determine what changes will be implemented as deep, wet sands are encountered in the reserve area. Knife River Coal began as an underground operation in 1924 at Beulah, 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Bismarck. In 1950, the operation converted to a combination underground and surface mine. The underground segment was closed in 1952. Development of the existing reserve area south of Beulah began in 1963. About one-fourth of the acreage under permit (Fig. 1) is sufficient for 10 years at current production rates.

For a Colorado mountain quarry, the Water Jet Channeling Method is far superior to Burning, Sawing, Drilling, or Shooting with Primer Cord, Water, or Black Powder. Throughout the life of our quarry, which was founded in 1947, we have used all the methods and turned to the Water Jet Channeler, which we invented and patented as our ideal way to remove dimension granite from our quarry. We jet the block on 4 sides and remove the block with plugs and feathers on the backside. The Water Jet uses approx 7.5 l/m (2 gpm) running at310,000 kPa (45,000 psi) to erode the crystals @ 1sm/h (10sf/h).The 0.533mm (.021”) nozzle oscillates back and forth to achieve an approx 5cm (2”) channel. Using the Jet, we do not lose corners or cause cracks in our red fine grain light class 5 granite.

Introduction Before examining the current position of the asbestos industry and its market outlook, it is important to describe the product itself. If we are to understand the problems besetting this basic mining and manufacturing industry, and, more importantly, if we are to appreciate solutions to these problems, we had better view asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. As a result, asbestos has found its way - in fact, is welcomed - into hundreds of applications. Properties and Products World production capacity of asbestos fiber is about 6.5 Mt (7.2 million st). SELENIUM AND tellurium are by-products of electrolytic copper refining. Copper anodes contain 0.01-0.2 % Se and up to 0.04 % Te; during electrolysis these deposit as a slime at the bottom of the cell. Such slimes contain 2-15% Se and 0.5-8 % Te, as selenides and tellurides of gold, silver, and copper. The following compounds have been identified in the slimes: (Ag, Au)Te2, Ag2Se, Ag2Te, CuAgSe, Cu2Se, Cu2Te. Anodic slimes from copper electro¬lytic refining are a grayish black powder, minus 200 mesh. When this complex mixture is decomposed in an acid medium, elemental selenium and tellurium can be obtained, while in an alkaline medium, both metals go into solution. Acid leaching The slime is charged in acid digesters of 800-900 lb capacity, heated to 260°C with 78 % H2SO4, for 8-12 hr. During digestion the following reactions take place:

This paper reports on some recent work in which several schemes were developed to model jointed rock under high stress, with particular reference to the phenomenon of "block motion" observed during dynamic loading of underground structures. Three approaches were made, corresponding to an increasing relative importance of internal block deformations as compared to rigid block movements. The first one uses distinct element method and assumes internally rigid blocks, which can break, repeatedly, whenever an empirical crack criterion is met. In the second approach each block is allowed three degrees of freedom to deform internally. The third approach, still in the development stage, permits arbitrary deformation of all blocks, which are internally decomposed into finite-difference zones and automatically rezoned during slip to preserve the calculation accuracy on joints. The last two schemes allow arbitrary constitutive relations for the intact rock, and all three schemes permit the geometrical arrangement of joints to be arbitrarily complex, in contrast to normal Lagrange, finite-difference programs, which are unsuited to model discontinua.

Traditional linear approaches oversimplify the complexities of ore blending. Adopting nonlinear blending models in mining and mineral processing is critical to enhancing prediction accuracy and allowing optimization regarding nonadditive variables, such as metallurgical recovery. This study implements a simulated annealing algorithm in short-term mine planning that seeks to optimize the metal recovery by considering how to blend the ore in the mine better. Two nonlinear metallurgical recovery models are used as inputs to the algorithm to represent synergistic and antagonistic blending. The results of the case study demonstrate that the optimized schedule exhibits improvements in both blending behaviors when contrasted with conventional linear-based scheduling plans.

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. Each year Hilti can be called upon by MSHA to provide booster materials for re-testing per our Hilti DX PAD 1/00 approval.

INTRODUCTION Underground siting of nuclear power stations is drawing increasing attention in various parts of the world. Scandinavian countries took the early lead in this field because of their experience in the design and construction of underground hydroelectric stations and industrial plants, and because they have near-surface rock formations which are ideally suited for hosting large underground caverns. The world's first underground nuclear facilities were built in Norway (Halden) and Sweden (Agesta) and were commissioned in 1959 and 1963 respectively. Figure 1 summarizes the main features of these and two other small-scale European facilities. (1-4) American utilities and regulators are also for a variety of reasons assessing the benefits and penalties of underground siting. A recent study by Sandia Laboratories (contracted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) focussed on identifying potential safety benefits of underground siting. (5) Although the study concluded that underground plants would have improved containment for some accidents, as well as better external protection, NRC, in assessing the overall benefits and penalties, decided not to impose mandatory underground siting for nuclear stations. The applicability of SEM/EDS techniques to particle-by-particle analysis of respirable coal dust is evaluated. It is demonstrated that the correction procedures needed to account for the failure of most EDS systems to detect light elements (especially carbon) become unreliable for particles in the respirable size range (< 10 µm). Other serious limitations arise from x-ray counting errors for coal particles with low but significant mineral content and particle counting errors for liberated mineral matter.

The best use of available reserves to give good metal recoveries relies on short term mine production scheduling.-The aim is usually to produce a plan to guide mining in specific areas that will enable mine operations to deliver the budgeted tonnes and grade to the mill and keep within the long range mine plan. Thus, short term production scheduling is an important aspect of the open pit mine planning function. Since the 60&apos;s increased attention has been paid to effective production scheduling as a means of improving the economic viability of existing mines. Hence, mine scheduling scheduling systems have been evolving rapidly during the last two decades. These systems include manual techniques, computer based simulation, mathematical programming and more recently Computer Aided Design (CAD). Some general drawbacks of the current scheduling systems are that firstly, the costs of acquiring and using them are not at all insignificant especially for small to medium sized pits. Secondly, there is an inherent trial-and-error aspect in these systems. Thirdly, they tend to be suited for specific orebody geometries, hence lacking the necessary generality. For instance, the use of computer programs for planning open pits to mine stratiform orebodies raises problems which are not usually met when massive orebodies are considered. There for, a need exists to develop simpler but effective short term pit scheduling procedures suitable for stratiform type orebodies, considering their geometry and geology. This paper describes a PC- based model designed to assist the planning engineer in optimizing the short term production schedule in open pit mines with stratiform orebodies. The model is based on a combination of linear goal programming and deterministic mining simulation. The orebody model is made up of ore and waste mining regions where winning and and/or stripping are taking place. These shovel regions form the basic planning elements in the model. This approach does not require the laborious preparation and use of a regular block model. The computer program consists of main modules: (i) Data capture - processes the raw data into the required format for mine planning. (ii) Precedence mining constraints - checks the status of each shovel .region at the beginning of a given scheduling period with regard to geometrical mining constraints such as undercutting. (ii) LP- Optimization - provides an optimal selection of ore shovel regions which do not violet geometrical constraints for mining in the period, the objective, being to maximize the contained metal equivalent in the blended R-O-M ore and at the same time to minimize deviations in grade and tonnage from the call values. (iv) Post LP-Simulation - enables the user to smooth out the LP solution in order to adjust it to a practically executable plan and simulates mining of ore and waste for the period. Shovel allocation to selected ore and waste shovel regions, unit operations and depletion of reserves are executed in this module. Preliminary testing of the model for monthly production scheduling using data from Nchanga OPen Pit on the Zambian Copperbelt indicates that it can be a useful planning tool and gives acceptable results.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified. In recent gears in the coal industry a great deal of attention is attached to the questions of elaborating and introducing the problems of planning and management and, first of all, in the sphere of mine production. The basis for planning of mi- ne production is complexes (sets) of problems for planning the development of mining operations based on different time periods, ensuring the follow-up of changes of mine productive capacities. Complexes of problems for planning, the development of mining operations at existing underground and surface mines within the OASUugol system (Coal Industry-wide Automatic System of Management) are aimed at ma- king decisions close to optimum, i.e. general lay-out of panels, blocks and pillars; transport and ventilation networks; schedules for working out parts of mine take; coordinated mining operations with limited labour and material resources; control of mining operations and ultimately maintaining productive capacities of existing mines at the required level.
