Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

This paper describes highlights of the Placer Dome MiniMole project - the development and testing of a robotic machine for mining narrow ore veins. A prototype hydraulically controlled robotic machine was built and tested. The machine provided a platform for testing numerous cutters in the field. Other cutters, e.g. undercutting devices, were tested in the lab. Extensive analyses were done on specific energies and cutter penetration. Three sets of quarry trials were done, then the machine was tested in an underground mine. Rock UCS values varied from 180 MPa to 230 MPa. The paper includes lessons learned and recommendations based on the project findings.

In the last few years major industrial companies have begun to realize the importance of Reliability as an enterprise strategy that, properly implemented, will improve financial performance. Typical results of an effective Enterprise Reliability Strategy include a 20% -50% reduction in maintenance cost accompanied by a 5% - 10%increase in real production capacity, with no capital investment in production equipment. One factor fueling the race to acquire and implement enterprise reliability is the pressure for companies to be increasingly cost-effective and competitive in global markets. In a recent study, Asset Productivity: The Next Wave, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)stated that, “In order to compete for funds, companies must offer investor returns that are competitive with other opportunities. Alternative investments such as dot-com and others with non-traditional business models have raised the bar.” (APDF version of the study can be downloaded at www.bcg.com). BCG views asset productivity as the most powerful mechanism for increasing shareholder return. The author believes that the most effective way to increase Fixed Asset Productivity is to maximize asset utilization by increasing the Reliability of the Assets and the associated processes. Developing and implementing an ERS requires significant effort and knowledge. Most companies have difficulty finding a sufficient supply of these valuable commodities to implement an ERS Program internally. Many companies also struggle with figuring out how to get started and what direction to proceed.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

Accurately estimating load distributions and ground responses around underground openings play a significant role in the safety of the operations in underground mines. Adequately designing pillars and other support measures relies highly on the accurate assessment of the loads that will be carried by them, as well as the load-bearing capacities of the supports. There are various methods that can be used to approximate mining-induced loads in stratified rock masses to be used in pillar design. The empirical methods are based on equations derived from large databases of various case studies. They are implemented in government-approved design tools and are widely used. There are also analytical and numerical techniques used for more detailed analysis of the induced loads. In this study, two different longwall mines with different panel width-to-depth ratios are analyzed using different methods. The empirical method used in the analysis is the square decay stress function that uses the abutment angle concept, implemented in pillar design software developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The first numerical method used in the analysis is a displacement-discontinuity (DD) variation of the boundaryelement method, LaModel, which utilizes the laminated overburden model (Heasley, 1998).

Background Increasingly complex geological conditions, with the presence of high ash binders in the mining horizon were encountered at the A.C. I. Dugout Mine near Price, Utah. This led to the production of high ash coal from the Dugout Mine during 2003 and 2004. This material had poor marketability and posed operating issues for the utilities burning the coal. Ash levels increased from typical levels in the 9-12% range to between 15 and 25%. etween 15 and 25%. Reviews of the mine plan and expected geological conditions indicated that further periods of high ash production could be expected. Action Plan Detailed sampling of the mine high ash production was carried out. The majority of the coal from the Dugout Mine is trucked to the Savage Coal Terminal (SCT) at Wellington, Utah where it is stored in multiple piles by quality. Coal at the mine is segregated by a CoalScan 2600, on-line analyzer into high ash, low ash and rock chute (waste material). From these piles, the material is crushed prior to shipment to SCT. The samples obtained from the various high ash piles were subjected to detailed sizing and washability analysis. Once this information was obtained, alternative circuit configurations were evaluated to process this material into a salable product. Water supplies in the arid terrain where the plant is located are scarce. This factor played a part in the final circuit design.

The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel (SMART) Tunnel is a world first in the use of tunnel space transmitting both road and water through the same spatial envelope. The unique aspect of the SMART project is that the highway decks are used periodically for the conveyance of water. This aspect of the project has posed its own technical challenges that have been overcome in the design stage of the work allowing the project to be taken forward to construction with confidence in the systems to be Installed in the tunnel.

Dust control in longwall coal mining depends primarily on the prevention of dust at the source and secondarily on the suppression of airborne dust. One of the primary methods for the prevention of dust is the wetting of the coal face prior to extraction, which can be achieved with water spray systems installed on the shield supports. The spray droplets must travel across the airway to the longwall face, where high ventilation air speeds can entrain water droplets and prevent them from reaching the face thus minimizing the dust control at the source. Through an evaluation of spray plume characteristics in a wind tunnel, the droplet size and droplet drift behavior was determined. This drift behavior was examined by evaluating the spray plume concentration drop and the droplet size shift near the nozzle exit at varying air speeds. Based on these evaluations, CFD modeling was applied to simulate the spray behavior for varying geometries. These results led to the selection of appropriate spray nozzles capable of carrying water droplets to the face at higher air speeds, resulting in an adequate wetting of the coal face and reduced dust generation.

In his time on earth, man has mined about 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) of gold. About one-half of this has been produced in the past 35 years. Roughly one-third of this gold is held as reserve in Central Banks. One-third held is in personal reserves. And one-third is held as jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing. There are many forces shaping gold&apos;s future. Gold currently has a favorable exchange ratio. This is encouraging many new gold mining developments. Production is increasing and new recovery techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways. And gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making its future predictable. Gold Today Man is currently mining gold at the rate of about 1.4 kt/a (44 million oz per year). This adds about 1.5% of newly mined gold to the total supply each year. This production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since much of the 93.3 kt (3 billion oz) mined is available to the market in some form. CORESafety ‘One of the best’Launched by NMA in 2011 and moving forward ever since, CORESafety is driving continuous improvement in safety and health performance among participating industry companies by shifting from a command-andcontrol regulatory approach to a risk-based systems approach built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act model (Fig. 1).Considered an exemplary safety and health management system, NMA’s CORESafety system helps mining operators change their approach to safety and health management by enhancing the safety and health culture throughout their organizations. Although it is challenging to consistently and completely control all the factors and variables occurring in daily mining operations, experience has shown that applying systematic controls to as many variables as possible is the most successful approach for improvement in mining safety and health.When embarking upon the development of the CORESafety framework, NMA’s leadership set an ambitious goal to eliminate fatalities and reduce the injury rate 50 percent in five years, or the “0-50-5” goal. While the goal has not been met yet, the steady progress has been extraordinary with fatalities among participating companies dropping 45 percent during the period 2011-2015 (Fig. 2). Data also demonstrate that, as participating companies increase their level of implementation, total injury rates have also declined (Fig. 3).In a September 2015 interview with NMA, Penn State University mining engineering Professor Jeffrey Kohler praised CORESafety as “an inspired and timely program that brings together key elements to achieve safety and health goals.”"

Introduction Noranda, like similar businesses, is suffering the pain of previously unheard of currency relationships, a cost structure built in better days, and conditions of gross oversupply possible in almost any commodity. Indeed, it does seem like the worst of all possible worlds is out there before us. To understand a Canadian natural resource company, you must know how the country is organized. So far as natural resources are concerned, Canada is not Canada. Canada is 10 provinces and each own the resources situated therein. Thus, the conditions of extraction, exploitation, and operation are all set by the province, while the conditions of trade and currency are set by the Federal government. This means that what may be the rule in Newfoundland may not be the rule in Manitoba or British Columbia. The second thing is that the Canadian currency has been a satellite of the US dollar for a long time. This means that we hold the unenviable and unjustified position of being the country with the second strongest currency in the world. What this has meant to us is what it has meant to an American operator. Since 1980, a pound of copper fetches 214% more for a Chilean than it does for us and a pound of zinc 115% more for a Belgian. From an American point of view, Canada is favored because its dollar is valued at 25% to 30% less than the U.S. However, because of industrial indiscretions in years past, Canada has a locked in labor cost disadvantage that is very hard to cope with. Canada has a unique situation with its labor unions. Many of the unions are, or have been, internationals and therefore gained undue strength in early days. Canada has a third political party of socialist persuasion. It is entirely funded by dues from laor union members. Thus, we have a politicized workforce. And finally, we have a public service that has the right to strike. This had made the public service unions by far the strongest now in Canada. What this means to the mining industry is that there is somebody out there blazing the trail. The unrelenting power of these public service unions probably creates a climate more conducive to excessive wage settlements in industry than would otherwise be the case. Study, Work, and Pray So what do we do when times get tough? In simple terms, we study a lot, we work harder, and we pray a great deal. We study a lot in terms of learning hitherto unknown strengths and weaknesses of our products, processes, and operations. We work hard in the sense that we do everything possible to improve our productivity. And we pray a lot because, so far, anything else we have done has not been enough. Some years ago, Noranda recognized that its principal base and precious metal operations were diminishing. To provide for the future, we should branch out into other resource type operations. These might be countercyclical and also perhaps a little more permanent. For this reason, Noranda entered the potash, aluminum, and forest products businesses. The rougher flotation at Escondida consists of 80 cells of 100 m3 each, with injected air. Escondida has developed a system of automatic control of the rougher flotation using video cameras, which have been operating since 1997 for remote monitoring and manual control. Since 1999, an image processing software and a group of rules have allowed implementation of an expert system. To date, the expert system controls the superficial speed of each cell by adjusting the air flow and the froth depth of the flotation bank. Preliminary tests of the expert control on two of the eight rows gave 1.2% higher rougher recovery at a 92% degree of confidence. The proven benefits are already sufficient to move towards a complete plant implementation.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Communism fell and signaled the end of the Cold War. The world rejoiced but also watched and waited to see how those countries would restructure themselves. The 1990 SME Annual Meeting was held at the Salt Palace Center in Salt Lake City, UT. The keynote session featured Alistair Frame, chairman of RTZ; Paul Queneau, professor of metallurgy at the University of Utah; and TS Ary, director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The SME Board of Directors voted to hire a Manager of Public Information and Education to be the GEM Program coordinator. This person was to collect and disseminate information that could be used by individual members and Local Sections to interface with government personnel and the general public.

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30&apos; from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

The empirical rock failure criteria play an important role in predicting the mechanical behavior of rocks, since affecting parameters on the behavioral properties of rocks are complex and numerous. Usually the empirical failure criteria are obtained by statistical methods, namely by means of fitting the mathematical function onto the experimental data. For evaluation and verification of the results, however, the quality and accuracy of the fit must be considered. This paper studies the efficiency and accuracy of conventional empirical rock failure criteria using a new approach, which is based on the analysis of uncertainty amplitude on the constant parameters of each criterion. The approach adopted here, is based on the combination of some parameters such as Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), type of function, degree of freedom and the confidence level of constants. Correlation coefficient (R2) is then a comprehensive test and can be used effectively for comparison and accuracy of empirical rock failure criteria.

Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.

King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.

Part of the Imittos Western Peripheral Motorway in Athens is the twin road tunnel in the vicinity of American College, with 20m excavation diameter. In the paper, the environmental and other requirements, the geometry and the geological – geotechnical characteristics of the rock formations in the construction area are given. Information regarding the modeling and analysis methods that are used for the design of the temporary support, the final lining and the wedge and slope stability analysis is described thoroughly. Finally, the results of the analyses are compared with these of measurements and general remarks during the construction of the tunnels.

In the mining and quarry industries, rock fragments are often transported by conveyor belt. To estimate the qualities of the rock fragments (i.e., size distribution and shape), an operator must take samples from the conveyor and manually perform a sieve analysis, which is time-consuming and tedious. Alternatively, an image-analysis system can be used to monitor the fragment quality on a fast moving conveyor belt. However, images of fragments on a fast moving belt vary to such a degree that the quality of any two successive images are not the same, and some of the images are of such poor quality that they are unrecognizable by human eyes. If poor-quality images are directly analyzed by a segmentation algorithm, the analysis will not be satisfactory. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to use an image-classification pro-gram for the automatic selection of fragment images with good quality. Because of this need, an image-classification program was developed and tested both in the laboratory and in the field. Testing of the system on different types of fragments showed that the system works reasonably well.
