The initial phase of a research program on smoke abatement from Bessemer converters is described. In work sponsored by the American Iron and Steel Institute, a 300-lb experimental Bessemer converter was assembled to simulate blowing conditions in a commercial vessel. Measurements of smoke and dust were also made in the field on a 30-ton commercial vessel. During normal blows the dust loading from the laboratory converter averaged 0.51 lb per 1000 lb of exhaust gas. This was similar to the exhaust-gas loading of a commercial vessel. The addition of hydrogen to the blast gas of the laboratory converter caused a decided decrease in smoke density. Smoke was also reduced markedly when methane or ammonia was added instead of hydrogen. The research is continuing on a bench-scale investigation of the mechanism of smoke formation in the converter process. DURING the past 2 years, on behalf of the American Iron and Steel Institute, Battelle has been conducting a research program on the control of emissions from pneumatic steelmaking processes. The objective of the research program is to discover a practical method for reducing to an unobjectionable level the emission of smoke and dust from Bessemer converters. PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION Although conceivably some new collecting technique may be devised which would be economically practicable for cleaning Bessemer gases, no such system based on presently known principles seems feasible because of the extremely large volume of high-temperature gases involved. Hence, the research is being directed toward prevention of smoke formation at the source. A thorough review was first made of former work to determine the present status of the cleaning of converter gases. No published work was found on work done in the United States on collecting smoke or on preventing its formation in the bottom-blown, acid-Bessemer converter. In Europe, however, a number of investigations have been made on the basic-Bessemer converter. Kosmider, Neuhaus, and Kratzenstein1 conducted tests on a 20-ton converter to obtain characteristic data for dust removal and the utilization of waste heat. They concluded that because of the submicron size of the dust, special equipment would be necessary to clean the exhaust gases. Dehne2 conducted a large number of smoke-abatement experiments at Duisburg-Huckingen in a 36-ton Thomas converter discharging into a stack. A number of wet-scrubbing and dry collectors were tried unsuccessfully. A waste-heat boiler and electrostatic collector with necessary gas precleaners was felt to be the best solution for this particular plant. Meldau and Laufhutte3 determined that the particle size was all below 1 µ in the waste gas of a bottom-blown converter. Sel'kin and zadalya4 describe the use of oxygen-water mixtures injected into a molten bath in refining open-hearth steel. They claim that with use of oxygen-water mixtures the amount of dust formed was reduced between 33.3 and 20 pct of its previous level, and emission of brown smoke almost ceased. Pepperhoff and passov5 attempted unsuccessfully to find some correlation between the optical absorption of the smoke, the flame emission, and the composition of the metal in a Thomas converter in order to determine automatically the metallurgical state in the melt. In a recent U. S. Patent (NO. 2,831,762)' issued to two Austrian inventors, Kemmetmuller and Rinesch, the inventors claim a process for treating the exhaust gases from a converter. By their method the inventors claim that the exhaust gases from the converter are cooled immediately after leaving the converter to a degree that oxidation of the metal vapors and metal particles to form Fe2O3 is inhibited in the presence of surplus oxygen. Gledhill, Carnall, and sargent7 report on cleaning the gases from oxygen lancing of pig iron in the ladle. They claim the Pease-Anthony Venturi scrubber removed 99.5 + pct of the smoke, thereby reducing the concentration to 0.1 to 0.2 grain per cu ft, which resulted in a colorless stack gas after the evaporation of water. Fischer and wahlster8 developed a small basic converter and compared the metallurgical behavior of the blow with that of a large converter. Later work by Kosmider, Neuhaus, and Hardt9 on the use of steam for reduction of smoke from an oxygen-enriched converter confirmed that the cooling effect of steam is detrimental to production. From review of all of the published information on the subject, it was concluded that a practical solution to the smoke-elimination problem had not been found. Accordingly, it was deemed desirable to investigate the feasibility of preventing the initial formation of smoke in the converter.

Cobalt Whiskers were grown by the hydrogen reduction of CoBr,. The fcc = hcp martensitic trans-formation in these whiskers was studied using X-ray and metallographic techniques. Present theories of the fee + hcp martensitic transformation were ex-amined in the light of the present findings Experimental evidence for slip as a part of the transformation mechanism is presented. In the bulk form cobalt is known to undergo a martensitic transformation1 from an hcp to an fcc structure upon heating above about 430°C. Upon cooling, the reverse transformation starts at about 400°C, but does not go to completion except in single crystalline or coarse-grained samples, or upon plastic deformation. The transformation may be thought of as the shearing of close-packed atomic planes in such a way as to change the stacking sequence from ABCABC to ABABAB with a contraction normal to the shearing planes and an expansion in the planes,2 producing a c/a ratio slightly less than ideal. This restacking to give {0001) and (112) 11 (1010) can be accomplished by the passage of a shockfey partial dislocation over every other (111)f plane resulting in a theoretical shear of 19.47 deg. To date there has been no completely satisfactory explanation of how the partial dislocations are produced on the close-packed planes or propagated from plane to plane to give the correct stacking sequence. The object of the present research was to study some of the characteristics of the fcc to hcp transformation in geometrically simple single crystals. It was felt that whiskers of cobalt grown by halide reduction would be ideal specimens with which to study the transformation, because whiskers have the following desirable features: 1) are easily grown as fcc single crystals; 2) exhibit relatively simple geometries; 3) have comparatively low dislocation densities;

The most realistic mine pillar design is based on observations and measurements in situ. Low-cost reliable instrumentation has made this approach possible. At the White Pine mine, with its thousands of pillars of all shapes and sizes under all kinds of loading conditions, practical pillar design criteria have been developed. The pressure arch theory is explained and work in two test panels o f the mine is described. The pressure arch mechanism, which relies on lateral stress for support, can be applied to puzzling roof and pillar conditions in other mines.

The principles on which an art is founded are usually few and necessarily basic in nature, but he who wishes to achieve the power to select his aides and give success to important undertakings that may be entrusted to him in the future must ordinarily undergo years of drudgery in order to gain the experience that will enable him to distinguish such fundamentals through the haze of reenforcing detail that clothes and tends to disguise them. This especially applies to those who would dream dreams that may come partly true. Professor Henry B. Cornwall of Princeton was a graduate of Freiberg with mining experience in Mexico. He was my friend and mentor during my college life. In 1883 I finished my postgraduate course and had two offers of work to consider. His advice is very clear in my mind today. It was essentially as follows: I know something of the mines of Mexico and have crossed through the mountains of the West. The West possesses a vast area of mountain and valley. California has long had its gold mines, the Comstock and Gilpin County followed and now comes the discovery of Leadville. I believe the West, will become a great mining country. You can choose now to teach here or go to the mountains. Were I in your place I would go West and identify myself with mining.

It has been customary, in predicting saturation changes, to use the Leverett fractional flow formula", obtained by eliminating the unknown pressure gradient from the generalized Darcy equations for the separate phases. The formula presents difficulties in the case of counterflow, since the "fractional" flow may be negative, greater than unity, or, in the case of a closed system, infinite. Recently, it has been shown by several authors that the corresponding equations (with capillary pressure and gravity terms) for actual flow of the phase may be used just as well. These equations are in agreement with Pirson's1 statement that, if the two mobilities differ considerably from each other in a closed system, the flow is largely governed by the lower value. The present study was undertaken because of an apparent lack of experimental data on gravity counter-/low with which to test the theory. A 4-ft sand-packed tube in a vertical position was employed. Electrodes for determining saturations by resistivity were spaced along the tube, one phase being always an aqueous salt solution. Air, heptane, naphtha, or Bradford crude oil was used for the other phase. A reasonably uniform initial saturation was set up by pumping the phases through the system, alter which the tube was shut in and saturation profiles obtained at definite intervals. Cumulative flows over certain horizontal levels were obtained by integration of the distributions; hence, differentiation of the cumulative flows with respect to time gave instantaneous flow rates. To compare experimental and theoretical flow values, capillary pressures were assumed given by the final saturation-distribution curve. The upper part corresponds to the "drainage" region and the lower part to the "imbibition" region, where trapping of the nonwetting phase occurred. While calculations indicated that the capillary pressure saturation function and, probably, the relative permeability saturation functions changed during the segregation, the relation of the measured rates to saturation distributions are in general accord with the frontal-advance equation. It appears that the Darcy equations, as modified for the separate phases, are generally valid for counterflow due to density differences. The usual method of predicting saturation changes, which involves a continuity equation and the elimination of the unknown pressure gradient from the flow equations, should therefore be applicable. However, the need for advance knowledge of drainage and and imbibition "capillary pressures" and relative permeabilities during various stages presents difficulties. INTRODUCTION The present study was undertaken because of a seeming lack of experimental data relating to vertical counterflow of fluids of different densities in porous media. In particular, it was desired to determine whether data obtained from these laboratory tests were in accordance with certain mathematical treatments of counterflow which have been proposed. The gravity "correction" has been incorporated into the flow equations (and, hence, into displacement theory) nearly as long as both have been used. field4 and laboratory5 data have generally borne out the validity of the theory as applied, for instance, to downward displacement by gas, with all fluids moving downward. However, the modifications for counterflow have only recently been pointed out. 2-3 It has been customary to use fractional flow rates instead of actual flow rates in displacement calcuIations. In the case of counterflow, this results in negative values, values greater than unity and, when rates are equal and opposite, in infinite values. As pointed out by Sheldon, et a1,3 and by Fayers and sheldon,2 actual flow rates may be used just as well. The fact that these may be of opposite signs for the two fluids does not present any difficulty.

OBSERVATIONS made in this paper were for the purpose of exploring the anomalous behavior of a particular heat of Type 310 stainless steel. The alloy, of nominal composition 25 pct Cr, 20 pct Ni, was observed to form a grain boundary precipitate at exceedingly high rates. A sheet of this metal, 0.060 in. thick, after cooling in air from 2000°F showed the presence of the grain boundary material, whereas none was found after water-quenching from the same temperature. HEATH, Hubbell, Mich.:-In the admirable paper quoted, is mentioned the date when the 5-g. assay was first proposed is a standard for refined metal. The author omitted, however, to mention a later paper,1 which contains a proposal for the use of a single " stock solution " of mixed acids, which has been adopted by the American Brass Co. and others. The suggestion is made that such a scheme would save time and manipulation with converter metal. Unless the low current of 0.5 ampere and the large excess of nitric acid, recommended by Mr. Keller, have been proved necessary to hold up antimony-and selenium, the use of the mixed solution which we have adopted will permit the use of 1 ampere of current per square decimeter of cathode surface, until the solutions have become colorless. At this point, we wash the covers and reduce to 0.5 ampere to prevent oxidation or contamination. The ordinary split electrodes have been used. With strong current, at least, the use of an excess of nitric acid tends to the neutralization of the solution before the end of the period, from the formation of too much ammonia., and this is detrimental. Antimony deposits more easily than arsenic, and tends to drag the latter dorm with it. There must, be some such explanation for the fact. that we have made hundreds of deposits of pure cathodes from Lake material containing no antimony, but as. high as 0.5 per cent. of arsenic. By placing an assay beaker in the Frary solenoid, or rotary device, a cathode deposit with less than 0.01 per cent. of impurity is easily obtained in one operation from 3 g. of whitneyite, carrying from 7 to 10 per cent. of arsenic. In such a case, it is necessary to test several times for end point and remove the plate as soon as no brown tint appears (at once) when hydrogen sulphide water is added to the test portion on the spot plate. IT IS particularly appropriate that a paper on this subject should be presented in Spanish, before a Spanish speaking audience, and in a South American country, first because of the facts that these countries today have not only the largest copper leaching plant in existence but also present great opportunities for future extension of hydrometallurgy; and second, because of the fact that the first copper made by any wet method was doubtless produced before existing records at the Rio Tinto deposits in present day Spain.

Discussion of a Paper by Mr. C. H. White, read at the Atlantic City Meeting, February, 1904. (Annual Meeting, February, 1005.) ARTHUR JARMAN, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*) : All designs for modern metal¬lurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed -on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage over those at the metallurgical laboratory at the University, Sydney, in that no doors to the hood are needed. Each hood in the laboratory at Sydney is connected by a glazed earthenware drain-pipe with a vertical flue, 20 ft. high, having a lighted gas jet at the bottom to assist the draft. Although the draft is good, fumes of sulphuric acid cannot be drawn o$ unless the doors of the hood are lowered more than half-way. In my opinion, a fan should be used for the purpose of creating the draft, and glazed drain-tile should invariably be used for the flues because no other material possesses the same advantages. Walters, Jr. and Howard Scott. Introduction F. M. Walters, Jr.—The principal advantages of the dilatometric method perhaps are two, as compared with the method of thermal analysis. One is that the dilatometric method can be applied with a large variety of rates of heating and cooling, whereas thermal analysis—that is, the study of the transformational characteristics by means of heat evolution—is limited to the rates of heating and cooling that reveal the evolution of heat. The dilatometer can be used for the study Of reactions at zero rates of heating and cooling; that is, isothermal reactions. As you will hear this afternoon, the rates have been pushed up as far as 500°C. a second. The other advantage is that the dilatometric method shows that a two-phase region is a two-phase region, whereas the thermal analysis merely reveals the temperature at which the rates of heat evolution are greatest.

IT IS becoming increasingly evident to management that it has other obligations than merely to earn dividends for stockholders. The head of one of America's largest organizations has stated it in these words: "There rests upon them a far broader responsibility than the mere production of goods and services, or solely the interests of their stockholders. They must assume the important obligation, through proper policy, of attuning industry to a rapidly changing world, from social as well as economic standpoints." Stockholders might as well reconcile themselves, therefore, to the fact that management cannot always put their interests first in the obligation of business enterprise: and that the legitimate requirements of customers and employees have acquired a new significance which must be recognized if the business of today is to prosper.

Clustering of slip bands in different systems has been observed in both ordered and disordered Cu3Au crystals compressed in the <110> orientation. Certain features of the slip band patterns are explained in terms of reactions between dislocations with Burgers vectors at 120 deg; in a few rare cases, the slip band evidence suggests that the Products of such reactions form diffuse tilt boundaries between the differently slipped regions of the crystal, similar to the known behavior of ionic crystals, but not nearly so well defined. WHEN crystals with orientations favorable for multiple slip undergo plastic deformation, slip may occur in different systems in localized regions, so that clusters of slip bands are developed. This phenomenon has been observed in fee1-4 metals and also in ionic crystals having the sodium chloride structure.5-8 In the ionic crystals, the boundaries formed between the differently slipped regions of the crystal assume characteristic orientations and are associated with macroscopic tilts that are plainly visible on the sides of the crystal. Recently, this interesting feature was explained in terms of the formation of diffuse low-angle boundaries as a result of interactions between families of glide dislocations in the different systems meeting in the boundaries.9 This paper describes an attempt to obtain similar evidence for boundary formation in an fee crystal. The alloy Cu3Au was chosen for the present study simply because this material is currently being used in a general study of differences in deformation behavior of the ordered and disordered phases of this alloy, which will be described elsewhere. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The two specially oriented compression specimens used in the present study were prepared from a melt-grown single crystal by careful cutting, grinding and polishing. The finished specimens were about 6 mm by 2 mm in cross section by 6 mm tall, with their ends parallel to (101) and sides parallel to (111) and (121); the broad faces of the specimens were made parallel to (711). Both specimens were annealed in an evacuated quartz tube at 850oC for several hours, slowly cooled to 500°c, and then quenched into water in order to obtain the disordered state for the alloy. One of the specimens was partially ordered (with S- 0.8) by reannealing at 350oC for 100 hr. After these annealing treatments, both of the specimens were electropolished. 10 Finally, the specimens were compressed in the [loll orientation and their stress-strain curves were recorded. The deformation was carried out in increments of a few percent strain. At each stage in the deformation the specimens were unloaded, removed from the compression jig, and examined optically for slip bands. Before reloading, the specimens were repolished, so that the observed slip band patterns were characteristic of a particular stage in the deformation. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 show!; the stress-strain curves for the ordered and disordered specimens and also indicates the stages 1, 2, and 3 where the deformation was interrupted for examination of slip bands. The curves show marked differences in flow stress and in work hardening rate in the two specimens, as observed by previous workers.11,12 Also, it was found, in agreemement with the observations of Taoka and Sakata,&apos;3 that the plastically deformed disordered alloy showed the characteristic coarse slip bands of alloys, whereas the ordered alloy exhibited a fine slip band structure similar to that of pure metals. Revision of the United States mining law is needed chiefly because of the following reasons: 1. The conceptions as to the characteristics of orebodies that were held at the time the statute of 1872 was enacted have since proved to be in many respects erroneous. 2. The operation of the existing law has been found to work unnecessary hardship upon many claimants to mineral land. 3. The existing statute fails in large degree to encourage development of mineral resources. 4. The existing law often produces conflict between placer and lode-claim rights, working unnecessary injustice to placer claimants. 5. The methods of establishing the rights of locators on United States mineral land are defective, and are not uniform throughout the States within which such lands exist. Law of the Apex The objections to the so-called "law of the apex" are so well known as to require no detailed statement. It is sufficient to point out that the apex rule was based upon the notion that ore deposits consisted of well-formed veins included between definite walls, like the slice of ham in a sandwich. The fact is that veins conforming to that simple type are rare. Irregularity is the rule, and the chief metal production of the United States comes from mass? which bear no resemblance to the tabular form of vein. Manifestly the law of the apex fails completely in such cases. Moreover, the tendency is constantly toward the exploitation of ores of lower grade than could formerly be worked, and such deposits exist mainly in the form of large irregular impregnated zones and masses, so that the future development of our mineral resources would be continuously embarrassed by shadowy claims to extra-lateral rights by the locators of so-called apexes.

We will reply to Dr. Pitsch&apos;s discussion by 1) presenting in greater detail the single surface trace analysis which we performed on the reversed austenite plates in a single parent plate of martensite of known orientation, 2) relating the results of our analysis to the conclusions which Dr. Pitsch makes on the basis of our data, and 3) examining the validity of our selection of twenty-nine individual traces from the over 200 austenite plates which were observed in a surface of this single martensite plate. Fig. 7 shows a standard (001) projection of the martensite plate from which the austenite-martensite interface traces were taken. The traces are plotted on the projection as the small solid circles, and the great circles corresponding to the loci of plane normals which could contain each trace or could intersect the surface plane along the measured directions are also plotted. It can be seen that these great circles intersect at a point which corresponds to the normal of the surface plane on which the traces were observed. Also rate which occurred only at particularly low heating rates, see Figs. 1 and 3 in the paper.2 Since in this case the interpretation of Jana and Wayman is plausible and since we have no alternative to this interpretation, we would like to state only that the existence of a diffusion-controlled reversal at low temperatures seems to be not yet proved beyond any doubt. Large Zircaloy-2 hammer or press forged bars did not exhibit the uniform excellent corrosion resistance to steam normally expected of the alloy in wrought form. Weight gains of coupons cut from forged bars were 40 to 60 mg per sq dm compared to the 28 mg per sq dm obtained on hot rolled sheet and strip. The mechanism of this corrosion and its relation to microstructure is discussed. After these observations, a solution heat treatment followed by rapid cooling was tried on coupons from eight heats of forged bars. The basket-weave structure resulting from the quench did not show agglomeration of intermetallic compounds. These coupons showed uniformly good corrosion resistance with weight gains very close to the 28 mg per sq dm expected of Zircaloy-2 after the 14-day steam test. A large forging was solution heat-treated and tested for structure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Corrosion resistance was excellent and uniform throughout the section. The normally anisotropic mechanical properties were changed to completely iso-tropic. Strength levels were raised while there was a small loss in ductility at the service temperature. Tempering of the quenched structure below the ß transus did not improve the ductility at the test temperature of 600°F. ZIRCALOY-2 end caps for nuclear fuel elements Zircaloy-2 is an alloy of 1.5 pct Sn, 0.1 pct Fe, 0.1 pct Cr, and 0.05 pct Ni, balance hafnium-free zirconium patented by Westing-house Electric Co. used in pressurized water reactors are machined from large hammer-finished forged bars. The bars forged for this application range from 3 1/2 in. to 7 1/2 in. squares. One of the tests used to evaluate Zircaloy-2 for this service is a 14-day exposure to very high-purity steam at 75oF and 1500 psi pressure. Normally wrought products will exhibit a black lustrous film of zirconium oxide after the test and show a weight gain of approximately 28 mg per sq dm. Coupons representing the forged bars exhibited a wide variety of corrosion results ranging from acceptable black coupons to some covered with white crystals of zirconium oxide that had weight gains of nearly 100 mg per sq dm. One of the most common effects was a white corrosion product that looked like a stain to some observers and the outline of massive metal grains to others. Very careful specimen preparation prior to the corrosion test did not affect the result and metallographic examination did not reveal a structural feature of a size and shape that would correlate with the corrosion product. In addition to the relatively poor corrosion resistance, the forged product was not as ductile as desired. The problem of obtaining uniform and more acceptable properties in these heavy-forged sections seemed to be a function of the microstructure of the metal and, in particular, the distribution of the intermetallic compounds. None of the four alloying elements however are appreciably soluble in a zirconium and are present as compounds which usually appear scattered randomly throughout the structure. Moudryl showed that the distribution of these intermetallic compounds in Zircaloy could be related to a ostringero corrosion failure. Grozier et al. discussed another structural defect that causes a similar corrosion effect. In this case, an elongated gas-void was determined to be the cause. M. L.
