Mud is one of the oldest building materials used by man, but it is not only of historic interest. Even today in many parts of the world, particularly lightly forested areas, it is the chief building material. Many authorities believe that at least 30% and perhaps 50% of the world's present population lives in earthen dwellings (Dethier, 1985, Coffman et al., 1990). Not all of these people are members of primitive societies or live in third world countries. European, African, Asian, and both North and South American countries contain a large number of such structures. In the United States, the American West, and particularly the Southwest, is known for this type of construction. Some of the earliest remains of adobe structures are those discovered in the ruins of Neolithic farming villages in Mesopo¬tamia dating as far back as 7000 BC (Steen, 1972). The word adobe has its roots in Egyptian hieroglyphs denoting brick and evolved to its present form through Arabic and Spanish (Lumpkins, 1977). The Spanish conquest of the New World spread the use of wooden molds to produce a standard adobe brick. Today, the word adobe is used to describe various earth building materials and techniques, usually referring to sun-dried adobe brick now used in the United States, but is also applied to puddled adobe structures, mud-plastered logs or branches (Jacal or waddle-and-daub), pressed-earth blocks, and rammed-earth walls or pisé (Smith and Austin, 1989, Ferm, 1985). Modern mud construction is used in many countries in various parts of the world. In the United States, the states from Texas to California are perhaps best known for this type of construction. Of these states, New Mexico has the dominant reputation for adobe use. Indeed, in New Mexico the Santa Fe style (Fig. 1) has made adobe not only acceptable, but preferred. RAW MATERIALS Adobe soil used by present day adobe producers, and probably past adobe producers as well, is principally sandy loam (50% clay and silt), although clayey silts are used in some areas (Coffman et al., 1990). In New Mexico, the best adobe soils are those developed on stream deposits, particularly Holocene (Recent) terrace deposits and older, loosely compacted geologic formations, such as the Santa Fe Group (Tertiary) located in the Rio Grande Valley. Some modern adobe producers use a mixture of materials from the screened fines of aggregate operations and mud from irrigation ditches in the river valleys combined with varying amounts of sand to produce the proper blend. Mineralogy Bulk Mineralogy: X-ray diffraction analyses of whole rock samples from many parts of the world where adobe is the dominant construction material show the major constituents of adobe are quartz and feldspar, with lesser amounts (in order of abundance) of calcite, clay minerals, and gypsum (Coffman et al., 1990). Adobes from and climates contain considerable calcite; in some cases calcite is second only to quartz in volume. Quartz, feldspar, most of the clay minerals, and some calcite commonly are derived from the mechanical/chemical breakdown of older rocks units. Some of the clay minerals, much of the calcite and perhaps all of the gypsum are precipitated from evaporating water. Clay Mineralogy: Clay-size minerals consist dominantly of clay minerals, but nearly clay-size fractions contain minor amounts of quartz and calcite, and occasionally other nonclay minerals. In earth construction materials from New Mexico, clay-size particles are the most compositionally variable in commercial adobe soils. However, the clay mineral groups in this size fraction consist of about equal parts of expandable clay minerals (smectite and mixed¬layer illite/smectite or I/S) and non-expandable clay minerals (ka¬olinite, illite, and chlorite), with minor quartz, calcite, and feldspar (Smith and Austin, 1989, Austin, 1990). In the and American Southwest, smectite is commonly calcium-rich and the I/S is dis¬organized and randomly interstratified. In a study of 42 New Mex¬ican commercial adobe soils, only two contained chlorite, and vermiculite, sepiolite, and palygorskite were not found. Soils in temperate climates, as are found in the midwestern and northeastern United States, contain an abundance of illite (Potter et al., 1975). The clay minerals in earthen structures of that region and in Europe commonly contain illite with less amounts of kaolinite, smectite, I/S, chlorite, and vermiculite. In contrast, the clay-size fractions of soils of humid tropical areas are typically acid, with kaolinite as the dominant clay mineral and lesser amounts of I/S, illite, smectite, and others (Chamley, 1989).

"Trace element analysis of placer gold can be used as a valuable exploration tool in order to determine the original deposit source and locating lode gold deposits. Placer gold collected from multiple districts in New Mexico and Alaska, coupled with a broad database of previously analyzed placer gold samples indicate correlations between chemical signatures (especially gold, silver, and copper) and type of deposits (i.e., Au-rich copper porphyry deposits, Au porphyry deposits, and epithermal deposits). By completing a chemical analysis and determining the particle morphology of placer gold collected from these districts using an electron microprobe, patterns in the chemical signatures from each location can be used to examine chemical variability (1) within the individual placer gold particles, (2) within the same district and (3) among different districts. INTRODUCTION Although there are numerous past studies on the chemical composition of placer gold by Newberry et al. (1997), Melchiorre (2001, 2009), Townley et al. (2003), and McLemore et al. (2014), the gold analyzed tends to be collected from one or few specific districts. Rarely do those studies compare compositional results to additional districts, or elaborate on the correlation between the elemental composition of the placer gold and the original deposit source for the respective districts. This research analyzes the composition of placer gold from multiple districts and within the same district. There are a number of elements, which can, in various quantities, be present in placer gold particles. Native gold can be in complete solid solution with native silver and contain additional elements including Cu, As, Pb, Fe, and S. The chemical signature of the gold is determined by the thermodynamic conditions of precipitation and transport as well as the total metal content of the system. As Townley et al. (2003) explains, “These thermodynamic conditions and metal budget differ from one type of hydrothermal deposit to another, and hence different deposit types will each have a characteristic gold compositional signature.” Identifying this signature can be a highly valuable tool in exploring for gold, as it can not only be used to determine the original source deposit of the placer gold, but provide valuable insight as to the erosion level of the present deposit."

In the fairly recent past, with a history of cheap and abundant energy, it has been possible to predict with reasonable confidence that world energy demand would continue to double about every 15 years. Those who attempted to forecast the role of nuclear energy in future electricity generation could also start with the fairly safe assumption that electricity demand would increase even faster : with a doubling in demand about every 10 years. To estimate the likely future world demand for uranium it was then necessary to introduce a number of other assumptions including the rate of penetration of nuclear energy, the timing and the specific fuel requirements. This series of assumptions naturally compounded the uncertainty, but, remarkably, usually led to future uranium demands being overestimated. Such a bias which has almost always been observed in predictions made over the past 20 years has increasingly made uranium producers sceptical when expected to match the forecast demand with increased production capacity and supporting reserves. This scepticism has, of course, been reinforced by the persistence so far of a buyers' market in uranium throughout the entire period of emergence of commercial nuclear electricity generation.

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

The use of paste technology for underground cemented backfill is widely accepted in the mining industry today as a potentially cost effective alternative to cemented rock and hydraulic slurry fill. While paste backfill is not the appropriate backfilling method for all mines, there are presently 23 operating tailings paste backfill plants throughout the world. This new technology has gained increasing acceptance as a backfill method over the last decade and its use is now expanding into the surface disposal of tailings using the stacked, thickened tailings disposal concept. Over the next 18 months there will be ten new paste plants commissioned in the world. Five of these ten plants will be used exclusively for surface tailings disposal or a combination of surface disposal and underground backfill production. The thickened tailings disposal concept, developed by Dr. Eli Robinsky in the early 1970's, has been in use for decades at several mine sites throughout the world (Kidd Creek Mine site in Northern Ontario), but always utilizing non segregating high density tailings slurry central discharge, stacked tailings placement. With the use of a higher solids content paste, the typical 2-degree beach angle can be increased to ten degrees or more with no runoff water and minimal shrinkage crack development through desiccation. This paper presents the design of the first mine to implement true surface paste disposal, Barrick Gold Corp's Bulyanhulu Mine in Tanzania. The paste system will be commissioned in the first quarter of 2001 allowing performance data to be collected to define the full potential of paste technology for surface tailings disposal.

Two samples of iron enriched basalt (IEB) containing simulated nuclear fuel and having two distinct microstructures were prepared and tested for uranium recovery. The IEBs are refractory towards leaching by ground water. However, the uranium content (15.8%) is high enough that if aggressive leaching techniques are used for uranium recovery, these materials could be considered as man-made uranium ores. The IEBs discussed in this report were prepared to simulate Three Mile Island-2 core debris. The crushed IEBs were treated using three different methods simulating potential industrial scale processes. In one method the IEBs were fused with sodium hydroxide then the cooled mass leached first with water then with dilute sulfuric acid; about 52% of the uranium was recovered in this case. In the second method the IEBs were treated with a sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide lixiviant and about 13% of the uranium was recovered. In the third technique the IEBs were leached with a sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate/hydrogen peroxide solution. Only about 0.1% of the uranium was recovered. The results of these screening tests suggest that the IEBs can be successfully treated for recovery of the contained uranium. Other studies would be required to determine if other values, such as zirconium or silver, could be recovered from the IEBs.

Mill tailings from skarn-type base metal deposits were studied in order to ascertain potential element mobility in response to weathering. Hypogene ore minerals are sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite, showing minor supergene oxidation to smithsonite, cerussite, and covellite. Gangue minerals are pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, hematite, andradite and grossular gamet, hedenbergite, calcite, ankerite, and quartz. Foremost of the eleven tailing piles studied, the hypogene sulfide minerals show no or only incipient post-mining oxidation. Iron oxides and hydroxides form the main oxidation products in the tailings and are enriched in heavy metals. A distinction between pre-and post-mining oxide phases may be obtained based on petrographic observations which distinguish whole-grain versus partial grain replacement. Zn and Cd do not appear to be enriched in the weathering derived oxidation minerals and will be more easily leached from the tailings than other metals.

Dense medium cyclones are the preferred means for cleaning 112 in. x 14 Mesh to 28 Mesh (12.7 mm x 1.0 mm to 0.6 mm) raw coal and are becoming a common choice for cleaning raw coal from a nominal top size of 2-1/2 in. to 3 in. (63.5 mm to 76.2 mm) down to 14 Mesh to 28 Mesh (1.0 mm to 0.6 mm). During the last ten years, dense medium cyclone circuitry design has undergone changes which have combined to improve process efficiency. This paper describes these improvements and compares present day design with the design used prior to the mid 1980's. Improvements in the following areas are described: Raw coal desliming, cyclone configuration, drain and rinse applications, dilute medium circuitry, and instrumentation and control.

Sand-and-gravel aggregates have become the number-one, nonmetallic-mineral resource in the world. Surficial aggregate deposits of economic size are becoming increasingly rare in most parts of Canada. In southern Saskatchewan, this is especially true, and detection and delineation of intertill sand-and-gravel deposits with airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys have proven very successful. Airborne and ground geophysical surveys detect such deposits by their resistivity contrast relative to the surrounding clay-rich soils. Dighem helicopter-borne electromagnetic surveys map soil variations over a large area quickly and cost effectively, greatly reducing the cost of detecting and mapping deposits compared with traditional methods (air-photo interpretation, ground EM, and drilling.). The multiple-frequency EM system used by Dighem can map variations both horizontally and vertically. Magnetic data collected simultaneously are useful in mapping bedrock geology. Both resistivity and bedrock maps aid in the important task of reducing drilling costs and person-hours in the field. The results of the survey are presented as maps of ground resistivity, which are relatively easy to interpret. These maps are produced in the field at the time of the survey, making quick follow-up of the survey possible. Airborne EM surveys can map the extent and depth of aggregate deposits more effectively than is practical from the ground. Since aggregate deposits can vary tremendously in a very short distance (<300 m) large-area EM maps can show both local area variability and also help develop intertill trends. A test survey for the Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation Department over a 3-km by 5-km area mapped all the known deposits as well as some unknown deposits, subsequently proven by drilling. The test-survey data show that the method not only detected the deposits, but also gave an estimate of the shape (volume) of each of the deposits. Comparison of the data to drill sections shows excellent correlation. Theoretical modelling demonstrates that the multifrequency system can discriminate sand and gravel from bedrock ridges. Since the successful test work, about 725 km2 of ground have been surveyed, resulting in the discovery of four new deposits, which can be used immediately, resulting in significant savings for the Saskatchewan government and taxpayer.

In parallel work, the cyanide/silver impregnated activated carbon system was studied for the purpose of developing an alternate cyanide removal system. It was found that free cyanide can be reduced from 20 ppm to below 10 ppb with a fixed bed of silver impregnated activated carbon, since such cyanide removal might be applicable to gold mill effluents, the investigation was extended to the cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon (GIAC) system. Batch tests were conducted varying the gold content of activated carbon, carbon/CN ratio, stirring speed, pH of the initial solution, and the reaction temperature. The adsorption isotherm of cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon system was also studied. The results of these batch tests show that the behaviour of the cyanide/GIAC system is very similar to the cyanide/silver impregnated activated carbon system variation of the gold content of the impregnated activated carbon has some influence on the cyanide adsorption rate. The latter is mainly increased, however, by increasing the GIAC/CN ratio. The activation energy was determined to be 3.12 kca1/mole (13.08 kj/mole) and the Au(CN)2 saturation at 194 µ M/g NORIT ROX O.B. The experimental results of reaction temperature and stirring speed show that the adsorption of free cyanide on such activated carbon is controlled by pore diffusion inside the activated carbon particle or by surface reaction. The adsorption isotherm follows the linear model and it is favourable for the cyanide/gold impregnated activated carbon system.

Titanium was discovered in 1791 and, four years later, was named after the Titans of Greek mythology. Titanium metal was first made in 1910, but was not used commercially until the 1950s when it was nick-named The Wonder Metal of the Age. The first titanium dioxide (TiO2) white pigments were produced commercially in 1915; more than 90% of the titanium minerals produced in the world today are used in the manufacture of white pigments. The remaining 10% are used to manufacture titanium metal and other uses such as welding rod fluxes. Titanium mineral mining began in the United States between 1880 and 1900 in Chester County, Pennyslvania. Rutile from a deposit near Roseland, VA, was mined in 1901. The use for the rutile was limited to production of a few titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Larger scale mining for ilmenite, rutile, and zircon began in Florida to provide chemical materials for use in World War I in 1918. This mining ended in 1928. Large scale mining of titanium minerals in Australia began when Benick, Anderson, and Porter (later called Tamco) started mining the beach sands at Yamba in New South Wales in 1935. Ilmenite production from beach sands in the State of Kerala in southwestern India also began in the 1930s. The 1940s saw many changes in titanium mineral mining. Extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The Pigments Department of E.I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. lost their high grade Indian ilmenite supply after World War II began, and they were forced to use lower grade ilmenite from National Lead&apos;s (now NL Industries) Sanford Lake Deposit, near Tahawus, NY, in the Adirondack Mountains. At the end of the war, Du Pont undertook an intense search for a domestic ilmenite source. With the cooperation of the US Bureau of Mines, Du Pont geologists found a very large deposit east of Starke, FL, in 1946. In 1948 Du Pont entered into a contract with Humphreys Gold Corp., who operated a heavy minerals mine near Jacksonville, FL, to construct a plant and operate it for a period of ten years. The plant started up in 1949 and operated under Humphreys&apos; management until the contract expired in 1958. Du Pont has operated the plant since that time. In 1956, a second plant was designed and built by Du Pont a few kilometers northeast of the town of Lawtey. The 1960s saw titanium mineral production expand in the southeastern US with Humphreys&apos; contract mining Du Pont&apos;s ore body at Folkston, GA. In the early 1970s. American Cyanamid and Union Camp Paper Co. formed a joint venture company, Titanium Enterprises (TE), to mine and separate titanium minerals from Union Camp&apos;s ore deposit southwest of Green Cove Springs, FL. In 1975 the TE plant was shutdown and later sold to Associated Minerals (USA), Inc. (AMC), a subsidiary of Renison Goldfields Consolidated Ltd., an Australian company. It now operates under the name RGC (USA). Mineral production grew in the 1970s with the development of extensive heavy mineral deposits at Eneabba in Western Australia and Richards Bay in the Republic of South Africa. The 1980s saw the construction of a very large ilmenite mine and synthetic rutile processing plant in the state of Orissa southwest of Calcutta, India. At the same time, concern for titanium mineral shortages expected by the end of this century, gave rise to a flurry of exploration activity during the mid 1980s. As a result, large deposits were found in Virginia and North Carolina. New deposits were also discovered in Australia. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of world titanium deposits and mines. The world TiO, production capacities are given in Table 1.

An on-site quality control facility at the Manville Products No Agua mine exerts a high degree of control over every phase of the operation from blasting to finished product.

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell&apos;s staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. They asked me to examine magnesium deposits in Nevada at once, and then to look at other magnesium and aluminum properties. After leaving

INTRODUCTION In response to the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (Public Law 95-604, Section 114c), a report has been prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1980) which describes the potential health and environmental effects associated with uranium mine wastes. The author was responsible for the geology, hydrology and aqueous pathways analysis portions of the report. All potential sources of contaminants, solids, liquids, and airborne emissions, which might cause adverse impacts upon the environment or health of nearby populations were considered. Wastes at both active and inactive uranium mines (Hans and O&apos;Connell, 1981) are described and assessed with respect to dose and health effects (Blanchard et al. 1981). The emphasis of this paper is on the liquid emissions and the aqueous pathway. Model uranium mines were developed for surface and underground mines. The model underground mine was placed in New Mexico while the model surface mine was in Wyoming. Development of a generic assessment was complicated due to the inherent variability of uranium mines. Also, most information available relates to uranium mills rather than to mines, or reported measurements were often influenced (biased) by wastes from a nearby mill and did not specifically reflect mine discharges. Consequently, the assessment presented is often based on conservatve (maximizing) assumptions which are identified as such, and which were based on knowledge from field investigations, available literature, and consultations inside and outside the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Maximum use was made of available data, supplemented with limited field studies in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Stream survey work in Colorado by the Water Pollution Control Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey (Moran, 1974; Wentz, 1974) mentioned a portion of the Uravan Mineral Belt and uranium mines therein, but the work did not emphasize uranium mines. Significant amounts of acidity and total trace metal concentrations were found in streams from 18 different mining areas. Dilution and chemical precipitation below mine drainages decreased concentration and increased the pH. Given enough time and distance, the streams recover naturally, but the accumulations of trace metals in the sediments increase. Field observations in 1971-72 of streams in most of Colorado indicated that approximately 724 km of streams in 25 different mining areas were adversely affected by mine drainage (Wentz, 1974). Discussions of the impacts of uranium mining on water quality or quantity are incidental in numerous impact statements and environmental reports prepared by industry and (or) the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an integral part of licensing or relicensing uranium mills. Coverage on mining is usually minor as the principal focus is on milling impacts. The same is true for the recently prepared generic EIS on regulation of uranium milling (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1979). Radiochemical assessment of surface and groundwater in uranium mining districts of New Mexico is done by self-monitoring programs associated with NPDES permits. Also, radiochemical assessment studies have been funded by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Unfortunately, there has been no concerted effort to prepare broad assessments of the cumulative impacts of mining and milling in areas of interest in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Critical review and synthesis of these types of data can produce rather useful information. For example, the publication "Water Quality Impacts of Uranium Mining and Milling Activities in the Grants Mineral Belt, New Mexico" (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) addresses the groundwater and surface water changes as the result of extensive uranium mining and milling production in a relatively confined area. A more recent report by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality summarizes 16 years of aqueous radium and uranium data. The study reports significant amounts of radium-226 and uranium were present in surface water in the Shirley Basin as a result of inadequate mine water treatment (Harp, 1978). In Texas, surface water and groundwater monitoring conducted by industry, as well as by State and Federal agencies, reveals little or no change of chemical quality attributable to uranium mining and milling (Gesell, 1977; Kallus, 1976). This conclusion is based on 586 samples collected from 198 stations over a period of 39 years, but primarily from 1961 to 1975. The State monitoring program by several agencies is continuing, but data reporting and interpretation is lagging. One survey (Itin, 1975) showed that none of the mine water from the 10 lakes that were sampled was suitable for human use. Introduction 1300 BC, Egypt. Pharaoh, the god-king, owned all things. He was the only mine operator. As the provider of all things, Pharaoh had great expectations of his officials who gathered the wealth. Pharaoh&apos;s official, the mine foreman, was at a gold mine site to see that royal expectations were met. For the official, it could mean a promotion to the good life here and to the godly life hereafter. When he checked the haul for sufficient progress, a lot was at stake. The miner wore a loincloth, perhaps a headband and, if he was a prisoner, ankle manacles. Only an oil lamp helped illuminate the hot, dusty blackness. A fire at the base of the quartz ore face competed for scarce air. The ore so heated crumbled at the prompting of copper wedges. Confined to a crouch, the miner tossed chunks of ore onto a rope-mesh which, when loaded, was drawn up and lugged out. On the surface, the gold was ground to dust. Then it was transported by donkey caravan to the royal depot. There it was weighed, recorded, and distributed to workshops. Many minerals mined Egypt had gold mines to the south in Nubia and to the east in the desert and Sinai. Indeed, gold underwrote Egypt&apos;s prosperity. With a constant gold supply, fewer hungry hands robbed burial crypts and tombs. Gold was sacred, "the flesh of the gods." The shiny metal financed the army that policed the desert mining routes and guarded the gold caravans from Bedouin marauders. Gold theft was an offense to the gods. Anyone caught with gold `in his lunchpail,&apos; so to speak, could say goodbye to life, both in this world and the next. In addition to gold, Egypt possessed other mined riches that allowed the Egyptian civilization to flourish. From Sinai and Nubia came copper. So abundant was the red metal that it enabled Egypt to become the supreme power, before the advent of iron. Also mined were amethyst, turquoise, feldspar, jasper, carnelian, and garnet. These were used for the rich inlay work that distinguished Egyptian jewelry and cloisonne. But Egypt&apos;s most endurable and awesome material was its stonework - for statues and obelisks and in temples, tombs, and pyramids. Stone quarrying was a vast enterprise. One expedition boasted nearly 10,000 men. These included 5000 laborer soldiers, 130 skilled quarrymen and stonecutters, and - egads! - even 20 scribes. In addition, there were thousands of officials, priests, and officers grooms. There were even fishermen, to provide the multitudes with the catch of the day. Mining methods detailed In 1300 BC, quarrying techniques had changed little since the age of the pyramids some 1300 years before. At that time, in 2600 BC, limestone was locally quarried and fashioned into the blocks of the pyramids. A basic limestone mining method was tunnel quarrying. A ramp was built up to the face of a cliff. A monkey stage was then erected on a ramp. While standing on the stage, quarrymen carved out a rectangular niche in the cliff. The niche was large enough for a quarryman to crawl into. With a wooden mallet, he hammered long copper chisels along the edges of the niche floor to free up the back and sides of the block. The quarryman climbed out of the niche and removed the stage. He then carved out a series of holes in the cliff face for what would be the bottom of the block. The quarryman pounded wooden wedges into the holes. He watered the wedges until they were soaked. The water-logged wedges expanded, splitting the stone along the line of holes. The freed-up block was then levered down from the cliff. On the ground, the blocks were placed on sledges. Men pulled these to nearby water transport. Without block and tackle pulleys, paved roads, and wheels, this was no mean feat. Each block weighed an average of 2.3 t (2.5 st). Whenever possible, the quarrying was done directly from the surface. X-ray computed tomography (CT) techniques have been developed for the medical services field in order to provide accurate internal images of the human body.(l-7) Now, a decade later, CT techniques are starting to be used in non-medical applications such as, non-destructive testing(8), flow pattern analysis(9), drill core examination (10,11), and coal characterization(12,13). In these fields of application, CT techniques offer the potential to extend our knowledge and understanding beyond that provided by more traditional methods of analysis. Although, CT systems involve very specialized and expensive equipment, the advantage of x-ray CT in revealing the detailed internal structure of an opaque material non-destructively should make it an important tool to provide a more complete analysis of mineral processing phenomena. X-ray CT systems generally consist of an x-ray source/collimation unit and a detector/data acquisition unit. The object to be examined is placed between the two functional units as shown in Figure 1. With this system the density array of selected cross sections of a chosen opaque object can be obtained in two dimensions. There are numerous areas in mineral processing to which x-ray CT technology can be applied and it is the aim of this article to identify these potential areas noting the advantages and limitations of the technology. Particular emphasis is placed on particle composition distribution and multiphase fluid flow measurements. In the case of particle composition distribution, liberation analysis and coal washability are considered. While in the case of multiphase fluid flow, swirl flow in the air-sparged hydrocyclone is given by way of example.

High-value materials, such as gold, platinum and other precious metals, are subject to loss through unauthorized removal from mines, smelters, refiners and other places where such materials are processed. A study by Gastrow (2001) determined that between 1994 and 1998 an average of 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold was stolen from South African mines and subsequently recovered. This does not include the gold that was stolen but not recovered. At 2011 prices, 603 kg/a (1,330 lb/year) of gold would be worth approximately $33 million. Mine security personnel believe that the unrecovered stolen gold far exceeds what is recovered (Gastrow 2001). Traditionally, metal detectors have been used to screen personnel leaving secure areas to discourage such unauthorized removal. However, with the current near-record prices of gold, platinum and other precious metals, it has become worthwhile for people exiting a facility to walk out with quantities of product that are too small for ordinary metal detectors to register, resulting in substantial financial losses.
