This paper examines the methods available to improve climatic conditions around a deep, high production longwall district of a British coal mine using results from a computer model. Such methods include the provision of increased ventilation quantities, the application of refrigeration, the reduction of heat input at source and the use of alternative ventilation systems. An approach to the solution of a climatic problem is explained with reference to other coal mine contaminants and a cooling strategy for deep high production British coal mines is described.

In order to continue improving the quality of telecommunication services to meet the expectations of the people and to increase reliability in the case of emergency such as disasters, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation (NTT) is now constructing cable tunnels which connect main urban telephone offices. However, almost all the large cities in Japan are built in river deltas, so that their chief underground features are low strength fluvial deposit and a high ground water level. In this saturated soft ground, the ground surface at an installation site has occasionally subsided through deep excavations for cable tunneling construction. As these settlements have sometimes caused accidents, especially in densely populated large cities, NTT has made much effort to avoid such accidents. These accidents have occured mainly in flexible sheeting due to its inward movement. Therefore, after the investigation into forecast method of sheeting deflection with accuracy, NTT has reserched a system which forecasts ground surface settlements. This paper describes an outline of the ground settlement forecast system and practical example on the site.

One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. In addition to classifying bulk material, vibration screens are commonly used in dewatering. However, the lack of a comprehensive physical theory of dewatering often leads to difficulties in the design and operation of the vibration screens. First, in this report, the dewatering of bulk material are shown based on a physical model. Because of tile oscillatory motion of the liquid in the bulk, the inertial force of the accelerated liquid and the dripping of water out of the bulk or screen must be taken into special consideration. The physical model put forward shows the effect of the various operations parameters of dewatering screens. A comparison between dewatering theory and practice are shown by measurements using coal, limestone, etc. Dewatering measurements conducted on a vibration screen demonstrated that different vibration frequencies and rates of acceleration lead to different residual moistures. Finally, the possibility of improving vibration dewatering is described.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating longwall mining-induced strata fractures and their impacts on casing stability of Marcellus shale gas wells located in longwall pillars. To understand the extent of overburden fractures after longwall mining, NIOSH researchers drilled a postmining corehole into the fractured strata above the Pittsburgh coal seam longwall gob. Knowing the extent of the fracture zone height will help gas operators minimize the hazards of drilling into longwall gobs. The core was retrieved from the surface down to the top of the gob void. Various fractures were encountered varying from 35 to 64 degrees, depending on lithologic type and relative closeness to the gob. The longwall panel dimension was 457 m wide and 3657 m long, in which the total fracture zone height was found to be at 141 m and the hydraulic connected fracture zone at 87.7 m above the top of the Pittsburgh seam. In addition to core drilling through the gob, FLAC3D modeling was also used to simulate the formation of fracture zone and the orientations of longwall-induced fractures. This study provides much-needed evidence on the fracture zone of Pittsburgh seam longwall gobs to help gas operators avoid potential hazards associated with drilling through highly fractured zones

A spherical agglomeration process for the separation of scheelite fines of less than 30 µm in very low concentration of 0.04% WO3 in a binary mixture with quartz fines of less than 30 pm has been described. A concentrate containing 14% WO, with more than 90% recoveries could be achieved by means of anionic sodium sulfo succinate collector at pH 3.5 and also with commonly used anionic sodium oleate at pH 10.5 as per the conceptual flowsheet suggested. Such a process is envisaged as commercial potential for the recovery of fine-grained scheelite present in the tailings of gold plants as found in India.

A cover with capi1lary barrier effects (CCBE) is being constructed an the AA leach pad at the Barrick Goldstrike mine near Carlin, Nevada. The purpose of the cover is to eliminate/minimize infiltration of meteoric waters into the leach pad. Laboratory and numerical analyses indicate that Carlin Formation siltstone (TCS), a locally available material, has the necessary hydrologic characteristics when placed on the leach pad to act as a CCBE. A pilot study was conducted on a mall-scale test cover placed on the AA leach pad to examine the cover performance under irrigated conditions. The preliminary test results demonstrate that the designed cover is capable of preventing meteoric water infiltration.

Research is being conducted toward making underground mining equipment autonomous. This will facilitate improvements in safety by relieving workers of dangerous tasks and will increase production by providing more accurate control with less down time.. A Bureau of Mines developed microcomputer network has enhanced this research by permitting a group of diverse computers to interact with a mining machine as well as with each other over a common data link. The network is composed of specially integrated off-the-shelf hardware and industry-standard operating system and programming languages. Using the network, researchers can conduct various experiments with the mining machine using a diverse group of intelligent sensors, computers, and microcontrollers. Descriptions of the mining machine, the mining machine control computer, control algorithms, -the microcomputer network architecture, and communication protocols are discussed.

Sample preparation and analysis can impose devastating errors on assay data. Minimizing these errors by testing and procedural redesign may be critical to assure representative assays and project success. Replicate samples, taken at any volume-reduction and/or analytical step in a sampling procedure, generate replicate assay values whose relative differences constitute a set of data. Variance of this data judges the addition to total sampling error imposed by the step generating the replicates. A variance more than (11.5%)' is excessive for a single step. Sample volume increase and/or comminution at a step will reduce variance for that step. Rejects from well mineralized intercepts can provide bulk samples for testing.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

Pegasus Minera de Chile, Ltda. is completing three phases of metallurgical evaluation on the Pullalli project to develop a preliminary process flowsheet. A project feasibility study is in progress. The feasibility study includes a proposed process flowsheet designed based on results from the multiple stages of metallurgical evaluation. Phases I and II of metallurgical evaluation included laboratory scale heap leach and milling cyanidation testwork on multiple drill core composites and bulk ore samples from the Pullalli Project. Phase Ill included pilot scale milling/cyanidation testwork on Pullalli drill core composites. The proposed flowsheet includes selective mining and separate processing of low grade and high grade ores. Low grade ore will be crushed and heap leached. High grade ore will be milled leached for 12 hours in an agitated cyanidation circuit. After 12 hours of leaching, sands and slimes will be separated and the sands will be washed using a counter current cyclone (CCC) circuit. Partially leached and washed sands will be added to the crushed low grade ore for heap leaching treatment and permanent placement. Partially leached slimes will be thickened in a high capacity thickener and will be processed in a CIP circuit. Leached slimes will be placed in a tailings impoundment.

Whether pursuing hedging or speculative strategies, gold miners can increase sales revenues 1 % to 6% by constantly pricing production forward. Unlike other commodities, gold futures prices are consistently higher than spot prices. A Colorado School of Mines study showed theoretically and empirically that in the 15 years since the price of gold was released from government control, the forward price for gold has been higher than the current price almost 100% of the time. The reason why Metal traders know that holders of metal earn a bonus selling forward when the metal is in "contango." "Contango" is a mysterious word that crept into the trading vocabulary a century ago. It designates a situation when the price of a metal on the futures markets is higher than the price in the immediate or spot market. If the spectrum of spot and futures prices remains static over time, the forward seller who has contracted at a higher than spot price can make a profit equal to the contango by redeeming his commitment at the lower spot price when the contract matures. Consequently, when a seller in a contango market hedges, he makes a profit on the transaction in addition to avoiding a price change risk. On the other hand, buyers of the metal who hedge in a contango situation will sustain a loss equal to the contango. Producers of gold, however, are sellers of gold. For most metals and oil, there is no inherent reason why futures prices should be higher than present prices. Buyers and sellers decide that the price of the commodity will be lower or higher than present values for a variety of reasons.

"In urban areas, it is often required to construct additional railway tunnels beneath existing railway tunnels. In this case, dynamic interaction between tunnels at the intersection becomes an important issue, as it amplifies structural behavior causing damage to structures and inconvenience to passengers. In this study, vibration superposition effect at the intersection between existing and newly constructed tunnels is investigated by the numerical method. Dynamic interaction mechanism is firstly examined using simple sine wave load, and then a typical analysis for actual multi-leveled tunnel intersection is performed. The results show that the dynamic amplification due to dynamic interaction of tunnels is 149% at the crown of lower tunnel. This indicates that the vibration superposition effect must be considered when the planning and design of a new tunnel beneath the existing tunnel. 1. INTRODUCTION In these days, there are increasing cases that trains cross without transfer stations in metropolitan areas. Consequently, either tunnel is necessarily to be neighboring or crossing, thus tunnel sections closely located are created as shown in Figure 1. If a new tunnel is constructed beneath the existing tunnel, the vibration due to trains passing through each tunnel can mutually affect. The behavior of coupled vibrations may occur and exceed the allowable structural limit, and cause inconvenience to passengers. Theoretically, when vibration waves are propagated from a source to different locations, amplification or decrease of the vibrations can occur by the principle of wave superposition and interference. Multi-leveled tunnel intersection is one of the cases mentioned above. In the actual tunnel, it is difficult to investigate the vibration superposition effect due to a complex ground conditions and structural geometries. In addition, train vibration itself is multi-source vibration, which cannot be theatrically analyzed. Thus, at the tunnel intersection, train vibration from two tunnels make the problem more complicated."

The system, when fully installed, will support applications ranging from business graphics through to terrain modelling and computer-aided design. The conceptual design which will accomplish this is presented. The problems of retrospectively applying graphics standards to existing applications are discussed, and a practical solution outlined.

In this paper we are going to look at some things that may happen to the industrial minerals industry in the next decade. First, some concepts and definitions. What are industrial minerals? Not everyone agrees on an answer to this. So let's look at some of the opinions. Some say that industrial minerals are non-metallic minerals. As you well know, metallic minerals are used as a source material for metals. Copper, lead, and zinc are extracted from metallic minerals. But, some metallic minerals are also used for other reasons. Bauxite is used as a source of alumina and aluminum. It is also used as proppant in well drilling, as an abrasive, as a refractory material, and as a source of aluminum-based chemicals. So bauxite is both metallic and nonmetallic. There are other examples, too. Bastnasite is a source of rare earth metals and alloys but its concentrate is used in fluid cracking catalysts. Phosphate rock is an industrial mineral when used for fertilizer, but it is also the source of phosphorus. Ilmenite and rutile are sources for titanium dioxide pigments as well as titanium. So the nonmetallic designation is not adequate to define industrial minerals. Some say industrial minerals are called such because they are consumed in industry. How about your cat's litter box? Is that industry? Huge amounts of montmorillonite, attapulgite and other sorbtive minerals are pelletized and calcined to make animal litter. Doctors are trying to get people to cut down on their salt consumption. They are against people eating industrial minerals. When diamonds are a girl's best friend, they are not industrial minerals; when they are grinding and polishing media, they are. These examples show that industrial minerals are not exclusive to industry. Regardless, here is my list of industrial minerals: Abrasive Materials - Bentonite Antimony (Oxide) - Borates Asbestos - Calcium Carbonate Attapulgite - Diatomite Ball Clay - Dolomite Barite - Feldspar Bauxite (and Alumina) - Fire Clay Fluorspar - Pyrophyllite Fuller's Earth - Rare Earths Graphite - Salt Gypsum - Sand and Gravel Kaolin - Silica Sand Kyanite - Soda Ash Limestone - Sodium Sulfate Magnesite - Spodumene (Lithium) Magnetite - Sulfur Mica - Talc Nepheline Syenite - Titanium Dioxide Perlite - Vermiculite Phosphates - Wollastonite Potash - Zeolites Pumice There is some overlapping. Fuller's Earth takes in some attapulgite, bentonite, and other minerals, depending on the market. Some would like to distinguish industrial minerals by the market emphasis they receive compared to fuels, metallics, and precious metals. But even there, strict logic fails. Some industrial minerals are commodities. They are sold on a price basis against industry product specs, usually in large volumes. Phosphate rock, potash, sulfur, salt, soda ash, and other materials fit this category. Some are almost custom-designed for end-use and meet performance specs. These are sometimes called functional or specialty industrial minerals. Examples of these are ground calcium carbonate, water-washed kaolin, cosmetic grade talc, filtration grades of diatomite, perlite, and vermiculite. A process has been developed for increasing the grade of chalcopyrite concentrates from about 25 percent copper to about 60 percent copper. The concentrates are treated with two steps of autoclaving and then by flotation. Because of the lower associated weight, copper in the concentrates could be shipped and smelted at less cost than untreated concentrates. Use of the process can also increase overall yield from an orebody if a lower grade concentrate is sent to enrichment than would be sent to a smelter. Potential applications of the process would be for treating concentrates that must be transported a long distance for smelting or for treating concentrates so as to increase the capacity of a smelter.

A geophysical investigation can provide valuable geologic information needed to characterize sand-and- gravel deposits and can be an attractive complement to more common characterization methods such as drilling. Although such investigations have been conducted already, a comparison of the different geophysical methods used in these investigations apparently has never been done. For this reason, a study was initiated by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the advantages and the limitations of different geophysical methods when used to evaluate alluvial sand-and-gravel deposits. The study is focused on those geophysical methods that are commonly available, because these are most likely to be used by industry. Furthermore, the study is focused on surface geophysical methods. Heretofore, four different methods have been evaluated. Three of the four methods-time-domain electro-magnetic (TEM) soundings, frequency-domain electro-magnetic profiling, DC-resistivity soundings-are similar in that they all measure the electrical resistivity of the ground with depth. Ground-penetrating radar, however, maps changes in the dielectric permittivity and for the electrical resistivity with depth. For all, four methods, the objective is to relate the measured physical quantity to the stratigraphy of the alluvial sediments.

Within most of Canada and the northern third of the United States, the soils overlying bedrock are of glacial origin. Tunnelling in glacial soils presents numerous challenges to the contractor, including abrupt changes in soil type, boulders and glacial erratics, water bearing fine sands and silts, toxic or explosive gases, and glacial till. This paper examines the available techniques for geotechnical exploration in glacial soils; the relationship between subsurface conditions predicted by various techniques and conditions actually encountered during tunnel construction; and potential improvements in the planning and implementation of geotechnical explorations. Case histories of geotechnical exploration and tunnel construction in glacial soils are also reviewed.
