Flyrock is the unexpected and undesirable projection of rock fragments during detonation of a blast and managing this risk is becoming an increasing challenge as urban development encroach toward mineral extraction sites. The basic factors associated with flyrock are discussed in relation to geology, blast design and management. Published data of historical flyrock events are investigated and compared with local information on incidents. Good agreement was found between the data sets. A computer program of flyrock was developed using projectile motion based on launch velocity and angle, rock size, shape and density. This deterministic model was coupled with a probability model to simulate blast events. The impulse time ?t of the explosive pressure was taken as the stochastic variable to replace launch velocity. The variables were calibrated to replicate field data. A simulation was executed to demonstrate the capability of the approach to defining flyrock danger zones. For a simplistic situation it was identified that an appropriate distance to be cordoned off for the blast danger zone is a radius of 120 m in front of the blast and 65 m behind.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The Government signalled its intention in the Economic Statement on 17 December 1987 to improve the fairness of the taxation system and to facilitate the process of economic adjustment by: removing tax concessions that benefit some taxpayers at the expense of other taxpayers,ensuring that those who can afford it shoulder their fair share of the tax burden,securing a revenue base which will provide sufficient resources to maintain effective social services,reducing artificial protection and concessions that discriminate against some sectors, and encouraging confidence through an economic environment with a medium-term orientation. The Government has clearly stated to all sectors that tax preferences will be phased out and businesses need to look inwardly to their investment policies if they are to survive in an open economy. This paper will address the effect of these Government objectives on the taxation structure for all forms of mineral exploration in New Zealand. The present tax structure will firstly be analysed, in particular setting out the tax advantages available to the industry. The effect of changes to the tax system within the recent past which relate to mineral exploration will then be examined. Finally the paper will address the question of possible future changes, particularly in the light of Government's intention to move towards a tax system which does not provide an advantage for any one sector of the economy.

The balling section of the pelletizing plant at Hoogovens IJmuiden consists of 7 balling drums. Each with an average capacity of 100 tons of green pellets per hour. The balling drums are equipped with rotating scrapers and water-spraying systems. The scrapers are installed in order to restrict the growth of the race to a certain thickness. The spraying system is used to adjust the desired value of the moisture-content of the rewetted ground ore, the pellets and the race. The desired value is the value by which the balling- process is stable, good pellets are formed and surge occurs within certain limits. In October 1980 the construction of one of the balling drums has been modified. The rotating scraper was removed and the inner wall of the drum was supplied with a rubber-lining. In 1982 a second balling drum has been rubber- lined. At the same time the Tyler vibrating screen of this balling circuit has been replaced by a roller(bed)screen. By the end of 1983 all 7 balling circuits will be equipped with rubber-lined drums in combination with roller(bed)screens. The combination of these two modifications will improve the quality and the screen analysis of the green pellets, moreover resulting in savings on energy- and maintenance costs. This paper describes the influence of a rubber- lining on the balling process and the green pellet quality by carrying out in-plant testruns in November/December 1980. The testrun results have been compared with the results of a not modified balling drum.

The application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal has been practiced for many years but has recently started to gain wider international acceptance. With tailings ponds coming under increasing environmental scrutiny, there is growing momentum towards mine/tailings plans that greatly reduce the size or even eliminate tailings ponds completely. This paper provides examples from the author's own experiences of the application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal in different countries, under different climatic conditions and in different industries. The paper will also comment on current research initiatives and future trends.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. A study was made of the coal resources of an area in Jackson County, Ala., forming a part of the Flat Rock, Henegar, and Stevenson quadrangles. The area studied is a portion of the Plateau coalfield on Sand Mountain and is near the Tennessee Valley Authority's Widows Creek steamplant. Since no detailed geological study of this area had been published, some reconnaissance work was done. The coalbeds and adjacent strata such as sandstones, conglomeratic sandstones, and conglomerates were studied. Available drill logs, together with the areal geology, provided sufficient information to permit correlation of the coalbeds and an estimation of coal reserves. For all categories of reserves, computed on a regional basis, a total of 72,920,000 tons of coal more than 14 inches thick is estimated for the areas studied in Stevenson. Flat Rock, and Henegar quadrangles. Of this tonnage, 40,001.000 tons is estimated to have less than 60 feet of overburden. The total measured coal reserves for the above three quadrangles are 16,359,000 tons, with 12,471,000 tons under less than 60 feet of cover.

A new personal respirable dust monitor developed by Rupprecht & Patashnick Co., Inc. in a multi-year project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) generated promising results in underground coal mine testing performed by NIOSH and industry representatives during the summer of 2003. The mine data showed that the personal dust monitor (PDM) performed similarly to co-located manual reference samplers for full-shift samples at all four underground coal mines at which the evaluation took place. The technology that forms the heart of the PDM, called the tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM system), is unique in its ability to collect suspended particles on a filter while simultaneously determining the accumulated mass with National Institute of Standards and Technology traceability. Because the monitor measures the true particle mass collected on its filter, its results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as do optically based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment, and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. Using the device, miners and mine operators have the ability to view both the cumulative and projected end-of-shift mass concentration values, as well as a short-term 15- or 30-minute running average. During underground mine trials in the summer of 2003, technical personnel used the readings from the PDM to identify and correct several abnormal dust generating scenarios. These events demonstrated the potential of the PDM to be used as an engineering tool to evaluate the effectiveness of various dust control strategies. In a separate evaluation performed by CONSOL Energy, Inc., the mine operator evaluated the benefit of a proposed new water spray-based dust control system. Engineers measured the dust concentration upstream and downstream of a production location under different dust control scenarios using two PDM units. By evaluating the change in the dust loading between the upstream and downstream monitoring sites, the company was able to determine in a few hours which hardware configuration would yield the greatest benefit to the workplace environment. BACKGROUND Measuring underground coal mine dust concentrations is an essential part of protecting miners' health. The U.S. Secretary of Labor and the Federal Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Pneumoconiosis among Coal Mine Workers has recommended that better monitoring of coal miner dust exposures be used as a method to improve miner health. In consultation with labor, industry, and government, NIOSH issued a contract to Rupprecht & Patashnick Co., Inc. (R&P), Albany, N.Y., to develop a one-piece PDM. The object was to miniaturize TEOM technology into a form suitable for a person-wearable monitor that would enable accurate end-of-shift dust exposure information to be available to miners. Furthermore, any person-wearable dust monitor should minimize the burden to the wearer by incorporating the monitor into the mine worker's cap lamp battery, with exposure data continually displayed during the shift to enable workers and management to react to changes in dust exposure. In the summer of 2003, NIOSH conducted extensive testing of the PDM to determine its laboratory and in mine performance. In addition, anecdotal information collected in the mines showed several occasions where miners were able to identify situations that produced high levels of respirable coal mine dust The PDM's response to unplanned changes resulted in action being taken to keep dust exposures as low as possible. In another case that demonstrated the PDM's versatility, a mine was seeking to find a better dust control solution on its longwall headgate stageloader. In this instance, the PDM was used as a diagnostic tool by the miners to quickly evaluate the control technology. [ ] HOW DOES THE PDM WORK? The PDM is configured to provide accurate respirable dust personal exposure information in a form that is as convenient to wear as a normal cap lamp (See Figure 1). Respirable dust exposure data displayed by the device has two main objectives: providing the miner and mine operator with timely values to avoid overexposure to dust, allowing them to make any necessary changes during the course of a work shift; and computing an accurate end-of-shift statistic for a miner's average respirable dust exposure. The mass sensor embedded in the PDM, holds the key to the accurate, time-resolved dust concentration measurements. The inertial, gravimetric-equivalent, mass measurement technique used in the device typically provides a limit of detection on par with that of the most sensitive laboratory-based microbalances.

Recoverable economic copper sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite and covellite often occur together in varying proportions in the major copper-bearing ores, and have individual flotation requirements and characteristics. Pyrite also occurs in these ores to varying extents as the sulphide gangue, and is problematic because of its natural tendency to float quickly and easily. In a bulk sulphide float, selectivity against pyrite is desirable, particularly if it does not host other paymetals such as gold or silver. At the same time it is a requirement to float all of the copper sulphides despite their electrochemical differences. The electrochemistry and semiconductor properties of these minerals are reviewed, together with implications for flotation with and without collector addition. Mixed collector systems for the improved flotation of these sulphides are proposed as a solution. The use of xanthate and dithiophosphate in the collector suite allows the co-existence of dixanthogen and free dithiophosphate radical because the latter has a higher redox potential requirement than xanthate to oxidise to the dithiolate. Because some of these minerals require dixanthogen, and others, free thiolate, to generate surface hydrophobicity, a bulk flotation of all the species becomes possible in the overlapping area of Eh and pH between the two dithiolate equilibrium lines on the Pourbaix diagram. The arsenic-signature copper minerals are added to the study, since many copper operations encounter arsenic as a penalty element in the saleable concentrate. It is shown that the addition of arsenic to the copper and iron sulphides alters the semiconductor and electrochemistry properties, and in turn, its flotation characteristics. The degree of mineral association and liberation between these minerals can be a complicating factor due to textural associations, and should also be considered in the process as a next step.

The first stage of the development of a new modified 201-type low nickel austenitic stainless steel is described in this paper. The alloy is intended for use as a structural alloy, and so requires a yield strength >400MPa as well as acceptable weldability and toughness. The low nickel content will give a lower material cost in comparison to more conventional austenitic grades, and the processing route is required to be similar to that of Type 304 to keep the processing cost low. The base alloy was designed using empirical methods developed for stainless steel, and the properties of the base alloy were verified using a range of small-scale melts. The base alloy had a 0.2% proof strength of ~320-400MPa, and so it is planned to use V additions of ~0.15% to bring about precipitation strengthening in the hot rolled condition, so raising the alloy?s proof strength above the 400MPa minimum.

"A recent study calibrated Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) resistance factors for local soil conditions in the Las Vegas Valley. As a part of this calibration, an extensive database of drilled shaft load tests and associated subsurface soil information were collected and compiled. This database, deemed the Nevada Department of Transportation Deep Foundation Load Test Database or NDFLTD, was designed with the presentation of load test data, the subsurface soil conditions, and the spatial distribution of the data in mind. In addition, the NDFLTD was developed in a way that allows additional data to be added as it becomes available. As such, the rules of database normalization were followed to allow for additional and different types of data to be added to the database and reports. Microsoft Access was chosen to present the data because it is easily accessible to anyone with Microsoft office software, it has a quick learning curve, and it has the ability to present a relational database. The largest obstacle faced when creating the NDFLTD was normalizing the data used in the LRFD calibration, with the goal of reaching the 5th normal form.INTRODUCTIONLRFD is based on statistical performance of engineering components, as opposed to the more traditional Allowable Strength Design (ASD), which divides the strength of a component by a safety factor. Calibration of resistance factors for LRFD requires a robust statistical analysis of past performance. For drilled shafts this requires a database of full scale load tests (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). The FHWA developed the largest US based deep foundation load test database, deemed the DFLTD, collecting data from 1985 to 2003 when funds ran out (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Recently, the DFLTD has been updated to modern standards (Petek et al. 2016). In October of 2007, the FHWA mandated state department of transportations (DOTs) to follow AAHSTO LRFD guidelines for their highway foundation designs (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Since then multiple state DOTs have developed their own, region specific deep foundation load test databases. Florida has a long history of developing databases for deep foundation LRFD resistance factor calibration, with the two main databases being the FL database, and The Deep Foundations Database (Abu-Hejleh et al. 2014). Iowa developed a Microsoft Access based database in 2014 (Garder et al. 2014). Oregon developed a database compiling pertinent data from the DFLTD, Florida DOT’s Deep Foundation Database, as well as from other databases (Smith et al. 2011). Illinois developed the “International Database” for static and dynamic reliability based calibration (Long et al. 2009). Louisiana developed a database for LRFD Calibration of driven piles in 2009 (Abu-Farsakh et al. 2009). The California Department of Transportation has its own internal foundation database, which is housed within the Foundation Testing Branch archive (Smith et al. 2011). In 2016, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) presented its own LRFD calibration for the Las Vegas Valley (Stanton et al. 2017), and the NDFLTD was developed as a part of that project (Motamed et al. 2016)."

Water recycle is an important part of the coal preparation process. This study was directed toward: (1) a survey of current practice and an evaluation of both the solid and liquid components of blackwater, (2) an experimental study of blackwater flocculation, and (3) a fundamental analysis of the flocculation process. The solids contained in the blackwater discharge to the fine refuse thickener of a coal preparation plant were found to contain, on average, 56% coal and 44% mineral matter. The mineral matter was largely illitic clay, while the water phase contained relatively large amounts of S04 and Ca++. Detailed studies were made of both natural and synthetic flocculants and the influence of polymer type and pH on the settling rate, turbidity of the supernatent liquid and sludge volume of the settled solids. More tundamental studies were made that clearly indicate the need for controlled mixing of polymer into the suspension to be flocculated, and the need to evaluate, more closely, the structure of the flocs formed during the process. Research recommendations are given.

Experiments were carried out on a flow- type vacuum device. ?2?2 decomposition on Zn? surface accompanied by formation of a Zn-containing volatile complex which transferred to the gas phase, and Zn? deposited on a substrate at condensation. As the substrate, five sequentially located quartz cylinders were used at 293K- 423 K (?n). Decomposition of the Zn-containing complex on quartz substrates carried out as a first- order reaction. ?The complex decomposition constant (??) increased with the substrate temperature (?n=293 K, ??=7.05 sec-1;?n = 373 K, ?? = 87 sec-1;?n = 423 K, ?? =158 sec-1). ?The complex decomposition constant did not practically vary when the target temperature increased; the complex formation rate increased slightly.

Refinement of design parameters and features has resulted in the development and commercialization of spiral separator models that offer enhanced performance for a number of application areas. Examples of recently developed spiral separator models include the enhanced performance (EP)spiral and the HC (high capacity) series. Comparative performance data for appropriate applications are presented for each of these new model spiral separators. The utilization of spiral separators providing improved performance offers significant cost and operational benefits for process plants. Examples of process flowsheet changes that have resulted from the incorporation of recently developed spiral separators include the reduction of the number of process stages and the achievement of high density tailings by the utilization of a dewatering arrangement in the spiral tailings splitter system.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, conditions were determined to form an iron sulfide adherent coating with a metallic golden luster on steel upon anaerobic heat treatment with sulfur. The sulfide formation rate was determined in the temperature range of 105° to 500° C with reaction times up to 68 hours. The optimum temperature and time to form an adhering decorative coating on mild steel was in the range of 105° C for about 70 hours to 285° C for 1 hour. The golden coating consisted of an inner layer of pyrrhotite and an outer layer of pyrite. At temperatures higher than about 300° C, the outer layer thickness decreased owing to the decomposition of pyrite to pyrrhotite.. Small quantities (<0.5 wt-pct) of petroleum oil accelerated the sulfide growth rate. The sulfide coating decreased the corrosion rate of steel in a neutral aqueous medium by a factor of two. The dissolution of pyrite in water was dependent on particle size and surface area with the flat pyrite coatings exhibiting the lowest dissolution rate.

The Plumduff sinter occurs at Whenuaroa, near Puhipuhi, approximately 30 km north of Whangarei. It is one of three residual sinters in the southern portion of a mid- to late-Pliocene geothermal system. The deposit consists of many large sinter breccia boulders, including rudrocks (coarse breccias), scattered around the flanks and summit of the small conical hill of Plumduff. Three types of sinter breccia occur: (i) rudrocks consisting of large, angular to sub-angular clasts of layered sinter up to 0.8 m across, as well as smaller clasts of sinter (20 - 100 mm dia), and fragments of stromatolitic structures; all clasts are supported in a matrix of microcrystalline, transparent to translucent to milky quartz; (ii) fragments of layered angular to irregularly mottled sinter of white to grey or bluish hue supported in a translucent to opaque silica matrix; (iii) smaller, matrix-supported breccias with clasts both partially surrounded and/or penetrated, by a clay-like weathering rind, and sinter conglomerates with rounded to oblate clasts. Three principal types of fabrics constitute the bulk of the sinter: (i) stromatolites, including columnar, palisade and filamentous networks, showing progressive silicification, in fenestral, tufted to clotted fabrics; (ii) peloids and pisoids; (iii) plant-rich facies in which various silicified plant species occur in a silica matrix. All fabrics have counterparts in hot spring deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone formed at temperatures from 75¦C to 35¦C. Also present is steam-condensate-produced alteration: kaolinite and alunite as well as boulders of quartz lattice texture. Cinnabar only occurs in sinter on the north and south central slopes of the hillside. No quartz veins or geyserite were recognised.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.
