Selective Blast Mining (SBM) makes use of milli-second sequential blasting technology to separate the valuable reef material from waste rock in the blasting operation at stope faces in the mining of tabular ore bodies such as exist in the gold and platinum mines in South Africa. The waste rock is cast blast to the back of the stoping area, and the reef material is fractured and deposited close to the stope face. Only the reef material is transported to the surface. A simplified economic model is presented to evaluate the economic benefits of SBM. Although premature, in that adequate experimental demonstration of the validity of the model has not yet been possible, the model is presented since it indicates substantial benefits in the case of narrow reef gold mines. It is suggested that many marginal mines should seriously consider SBM. Benefits can also be realised in platinum mines, but a lot more experimental work is necessary to establish cost parameters more reliably. Some practical experience in the use of SBM in the mining of the UG2 reef is presented.

The laws of throwing and heaping of engineering blast are important for making use of throwing and heaping of thrown body to form certain shape, such as building dams by directional blast. The article is to apply Ballistic theory of single thrown body to take the throwing course of thrown body as the movement of particle system, and then delimit the total of thrown body into units of thrown bodies, and regard the heaping shape of single thrown body as a perfect triangle, and found a quantitative relation between macro-geometry parameters of perfect triangle and designed parameters of explosives. The theory has been adopted in blast practice and gotten good effects.

A kinetic model for leaching of particulate metals in a batch system has been developed. The leaching mechanism has been analyzed by solving a series of ordinary differential equations relating heterogeneous reaction kinetics at the solid/liquid interface to mass transfer of reactant and products. Special emphasis has been given to the effect of changing of the surface area of the leaching substrate and initial particle distribution on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of gold powders in acidic solution with bromine as an oxidant has been used as a model system. The effect of particle size, chemical reaction order, rate constant and mass transfer coefficient on the overall rate of dissolution of metal powder has been analyzed and discussed.

"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. The Rosebery and Hercules mines, situated in the Rosebery-Williamsford district in western Tasmania, have a history of production dating back to 1896-7, although full scale production did not commence until 1936, following the development of a satisfactory process of selective flotation (Hall, Cottle, Rosenhain and McGhie, 1953). The mineral composition of the Rosebery zinc-lead ores was first described in detail by Stillwell (1934). The Hercules ore is generally similar, but as yet no descriptions of it have beenpublished.Since Dr. Stillwell's paper appeared, the management of the Rosebery and Hercules mines has from time to time submitted a number of interesting mineral specimens to C.S.I.R.O. Mineragraphie Investigations. Examination of these specimens brought to light eight minerals, some relatively uncommon, not previously recognized in these ores.They are cassiterite, molybdenite, stannite, electrum, meneghinite, boulangerite, pyrargyrite and pyrrhotite. Some of the specimens are also rich in tetrahedrite and gold. In addition each of the other ore minerals described by Stillwell, viz. pyrite, sphalerite, galena, bournonite, chaleopyrite and arsenopyrite, was detected in one or more of the specimens examined during the present study. The principal gangue minerals were found to be quartz, manganiferous carbonate, sericite and barite, agreeing closely with the observations of Stillwell.The present study was based on the examination of the following eight specimens.

Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

NO thought had been given to deep level mining at the Alaska Juneau mine prior to 1930, but in that year a prospect winze was started and continued for 1000 ft. vertically below the main haulage or adit level. The point at which this winze was started was selected entirely by the prevailing physical conditions, such as proximity to established workings, convenience, and the presence overhead of a substantial pillar of dimensions sufficient to lo¬cate the sheave wheel and loading pocket. It was, therefore, with some surprise that the unusually high-grade ore found just below the collar of the winze persisted, with certain vari¬ations, to a full depth of 1000 ft. vertically. Likewise this unusually high-grade ore was found to persist on the various crosscuts driven on levels at 200-ft. vertical intervals. To be brief, this deep level work found richer ore than any yet found in the mine over like areas, and inasmuch as the area was sufficient to plan for extensive deep level mining, plans for such work were given extended consideration.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

A technologic group such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau f Mines, which conducts research on many of the complicated and frequently interrelated problems f extracting crude oil and natural gas from the ground, transporting them to market or to daces for subsequent treatment, and manufacturing products, should report progress from time to time. Engineers and others who apply the results obtained by this division are closely associated with its personnel, because many of the problems are attached cooperatively with groups in industry. Some of this cooperation is formal, as exemplified by work now in progress under cooperative agreements with the States of Oklahoma, Kansas, and others, but much of it is informal, prompted by the desire to be mutually helpful in the public interest. Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

This paper discusses in situ studies conducted at an Illinois Basin room-and-pillar coal mine to evaluate the performances of three different types of bolts under similar geologic conditions. The bolt types considered were the fully grouted passive rebar (FGPR), the resin-assisted mechanical anchor (RMAB), and the fully grouted tension rebar (FGTR). During the evaluations, the three types of bolts were installed in a single entry covering a span of three contiguous pillars with almost identical geologic conditions. The performances of the three types of bolts were investigated by instrumentting the bolts prior to installation as primary supports on cycle. Additional data on roof behavior was collected with extensometers and shear meters placed near the instrumented bolts. Excluding some time lapse right after installation, the performance evaluation of the three bolt systems was based on the data collected for over a year. Based on this study, it was found that the axial loads measured in the different bolt types did not show any identifiable patterns under the prevailing geological conditions at the mine. Therefore, the assumption that active bolts must be superior to passive ones is not always valid. Even though the studied mine did not have any thinly laminated, weak rocks in the immediate roof, the passive bolts performed as well as the active systems.

When dealing with high velocity projectiles, the ability for researchers to accurately and precisely measure the velocity of the projectile is of great value. This report will analyze three different methods of recording high velocity projectiles for: their ability to record velocity data, pros and cons for each method, and any possible bias or limitations that would result. Method 1 uses a Phantom V10 high-speed video camera and a velocity reference screen to record the projectile’s path and proprietary Phantom software to analyze the data and determine velocity. Method 2 utilizes two break screens. This method, consisting of strung copper wire as the break material, is one that has been used in the past by Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) researchers in assisting in finding velocities of high-speed projectiles. Method 3 is a pair of make screens, similar to Method 2 in that two screens were used for each test but relies on a projectile making a circuit between two sheets of metal separated by an insulation layer, to find a velocity. All three methods will be used simultaneously in each shot to rule out any projectile differences in subsequent shots. Projectiles of three different relative velocities, low, medium, and high, will be fired and analyzed to determine strengths and weaknesses of each method.

London Mining Plc. is developing an iron ore project in Sierra Leone. The Marampa mine is a brownfield development effort, having been operated by others since the 1930?s until low iron ore prices forced closure. Peak production of the prior operations was approximately 2.5 Mt/a in the 1960?s. Following civil war In Sierra Leone, London Mining obtained the mining license in 2006 and commenced activity to redevelop the Marampa mining and processing operations. There are two ore deposits of interest for development as well as a resource comprised of tailings from previous operations. Phase 1 will be the mining of the tailings resource with a 1.8 Mt/a plant producing 66 per cent Fe sinter feed, expandable to 3.6 Mtpa. The first phase is currently under construction with start-up expected in the third quarter of 2011. Phase 2 will include development of the two ore deposits. These deposits are weathered secondary ore and the main primary ore resource. Phase 2 is currently under prefeasibility study and targets a final 16 Mt/a concentrate production in 2016. Outotec partnered with London Mining on testing efforts to develop the magnetic separation flowsheet using SLon VPHGMS machines to process the Marampa material. This paper explains the flowsheet development process for the weathered and primary ores commencing with sample characterization and detailed parametric investigations to evaluate SLon performance. The final flowsheet configuration is explained, including expected circuit recoveries and concentrate quality, clearly demonstrating the performance of the SLon VPHGMS circuit in iron ore tailings treatment applications.

1. INTRODUCTION In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Research Center required that a large reverberation acoustic facility be constructed. This facility was designed to determine the sound power level emissions of mining equipment, especially continuous miners and jumbo drills. A contract for a conceptual design of a reverberation chamber was awarded to Wyle Laboratories of Huntsville, AL, which had extensive experience in the design, construction, and accreditation of acoustical reverberation chambers. The following standards were referenced as guidelines for the design of the chamber: ANSI S1.31-1980, “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Broadband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms” and ANSI S1.32-1980: “Precision Methods for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Discrete-Frequency and Narrowband Noise Sources in Reverberation Rooms.” Specific requested criteria included that the room be large enough to accommodate typically large mining equipment and that there be adequate acoustical modal density in the frequency range of interest. It was also required that the room dimensions would support broadband acoustical measurements down to the 100 Hz third octave band. With the closing of the Bureau of Mines in 1996, this reverberation chamber lay dormant for a number of years. However, this facility is now part of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). One of NIOSH’s missions is to decrease noise induced hearing loss among the nation’s mineworkers. To this end, PRL researchers are refurbishing and instrumenting this reverberation chamber to facilitate assessment of the various engineering controls being developed to decrease the sound power level emissions of mining equipment. Early on, this work has sought to bring the chamber up to the level of ISO 3743-21 standard for engineering grade measurements for broad-band noise, with a longer range goal of improving the lab to meet the requirements of ISO 37412standard for broadband precision grade measurements. 2. DESIGN OF THE REVERBERATION CHAMBER The nominal room dimensions are 18.3 meters long by 10.3 meters wide with a height of 6.7 meters. The chamber volume is 1,286 cubic meters. These dimensions are important, as few reverberation facilities are large enough to test typically huge mining equipment. The floor is poured concrete with a sealer to make it acoustically reflective. The walls are built of hollow concrete block, 16 inches long x 8 inches high by 12inches thick. Northside Storage Tunnel provides 500 megalitres (Ml) (130 million gallons) of storage capacity to capture stormwater/sewage overflows into Sydney Harbour. The6.6 m diameter TBM driven tunnel traverses Middle Harbour 85 m (280 ft) below sea level and through a sandstone/shale rock mass, highly disturbed by stress relief, 20 m(65 ft) beneath the base of the sediment filled palaeochannel. Target limits for inflow, groundwater drawdown and settlement of the valley beaches were achieved by systematic forward grouting from the TBM. Support included rockbolts, sets and shotcrete to carry rock loads, control block instability and spalling and to provide durability and serviceability. This paper describes the tunnelling and grouting works and their effectiveness.

With increasing energy costs and mounting government pressure to adopt low emission, green sources of energy, it has become imperative to develop long-term sustainable underground infrastructures that exhibit low power consumption. Underground mining environments are mandated to have ventilation systems in place to replace polluted air with clean air. Continuously running air ventilation systems have proven to be an expensive solution for this requirement. Ventilation-on-demand (VOD) is a cost effective method for not only reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gasses, but also ensuring the safety and well-being of the miners beneath the surface. VOD is achieved by monitoring the air quality in target areas of the mine, and based on variables such as the number of personnel in the area, the number of emission-emitting vehicles, the air leakage around doors and entrances, dust levels, and other key environmental details, the speed and angles of the fan blades are adjusted to increase or decrease the volume of air flow. For over 40 years, Conspec Controls has been developing systems capable of VOD through the use of controllers, gas monitors and personnel/vehicle tracking equipment, providing inexpensive, reliable solutions for underground ventilation.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo a síntese de materiais híbridos nanoestruturados à partir da funcionalização do argilomineral haloisita com (3-aminopropil)trietoxissilano (APTES) para aplicação em processos de adsorção. A rota de modificação baseou-se na acidificação e posterior reação química entre as hidroxilas superficiais da haloisita e os grupos hidrolisáveis de APTES na presença de tolueno sob refluxo. Haloisita em sua forma natural e modificada foi caracterizada por análise termogravimétrica (TG), área superficial específica (BET), espectroscopia de infravermelho (FTIR) e difração de raios X (DRX). A quantidade de APTES enxertado, calculado através da análise termogravimétrica foi de 7,32% para a amostra funcionalizada previamente acidificada e 6,50% para a amostra funcionalizada sem pré tratamento ácido. A área superficial das amostras diminuiu com a funcionalização. As amostras funcionalizadas exibiram novas bandas características de grupos de APTES no espectro obtido por FTIR confirmando a ocorrência da funcionalização do organosilano na haloisita. A análise de DRX indicou que a estrutura original não foi alterada após a funcionalização.

Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. The Sandvik DE710 diamond core drill has become one of the most popular exploration drills available. It is operated on exploration and mining projects in locations around the world. The compact nature of the DE710 allows a small footprint on site. This has proven to be a great benefit in difficult access areas where site preparation can be limited. The DE710 drill is available in a range of con-figurations to suit global operational and environ-mental demands. It can be truck-mounted for greater maneuverability and ease of relocating the drill between sites. The drill can also be fitted to crawler tracks, powered from the rig hydraulic system, making it a small, self-propelled unit for areas with difficult site access. And the DE710 is available in a shack-mounted configuration for cold weather applications, ensuring a protected working environment for the drill crew. The DE710 is powered by a 6.7-liter engine that produces 141 kW (190 hp) at 2,200 rpm to power the rig hydraulic system. The engine complies with the Tier 3 emissions standards that are being introduced in many countries. The hydraulic system design for the Sandvik DE710 is based on the company?s philosophy of selecting the best available products to suit the application. The main hydraulic pumps and motors are the variable displacement design. This allows for greater fl exibility and precise control of critical drilling functions. The cooling system has also been designed for operation in ambient temperatures up to 50° C (122° F) to cope with varying global operational demands.

On Monday, June 27, 1921, at 6 p. m., twenty-four members of the Institute from. Colorado and New Mexico, left Denver on the Union Pacific for Rock Springs, Wyoming, arriving there at 9:42 a. m., June 28th. The party was met at the depot by the Rock Springs committee and a large number of the local Institute members. The day was spent in visiting the Central Power Plant of, the Union Pacific Coal Company and adjacent mine, the new 'E Plane, the Reliance, Dines, Winton and Sweetwater coal properties in the district. At noon a very elaborate lunch was served in the First Aid Building at the Reliance mine, which was most heartily enjoyed by all. In the evening the members and friends visited the new Rialto theater and saw the pictorial exposition of the' "Sky Pilot". The evening terminated with a dance in the ballroom of the Masonic Temple from 9:30 until midnight, concluding one of the most enjoyable days which the Institute has ever spent in Rock Springs. At 12:3o a. m. the original party, augmented by six members from Rock Springs, were again enroute to Salt Lake City, arriving there at 8:30 in the morning of Wednesday, June 29th. The Hotel Utah had been selected by the local, committee as the headquarters for the convention, and the majority of the -members at once proceeded to that place where the books were opened and the paying of dues and registration of the members were carried on until 11:45 a.m. At noon a majority of the members were entertained at the L. D. S. Tabernacle with an organ recital, which was up to its usual standard of excellence.
